Kim Kardashian, pre-robbery, said she can ‘handle the loss of privacy’

kim1

Kim Kardashian has been quiet for weeks now, ever since she was robbed at gunpoint in her Paris hotel/apartment. She hasn’t posted anything to social media, she hasn’t given any interviews or made any public statements. We know from “sources” and from her family members that she’s not doing so well, that she’s still feeling pretty traumatized and that she’s really not feeling the whole “being out in public thing.” The only public moves she’s made whatsoever is to sue Media Takeout and threaten to sue the Huffington Post, because both outlets ran stories about how Kim “faked” her robbery.

Before the robbery, Kim sat down with 60 Minutes for a segment about “social media influencers” and how celebrities like Kim are influencing a generation of kids to want fame and fortune for merely posting to social media, basically. In the 60 Minutes interview, Kim said some sh-t which I’m sure she’s now regretting. Some highlights:

Whether she could exist without social media: “Not in this way. I totally attribute my career to social media. There are pitfalls—lack of privacy, loss off privacy. That’s not for everyone. For me, I can handle it.”

Being told she “monetized the act of living”: “Yeah. I guess so.”

She thinks her brand is her talent: “It is a talent to have a brand that’s really successful off of getting people to like you for you. I would think that has to involve some kind of talent, you know?”

The pros and cons of public life: “I do believe that the pros in my situation and my lifestyle have been more beneficial than the negative things.”

When asked “The money’s not bad?”: “Not bad.”

[From Us Weekly]

I’m including the sole clip that 60 Minutes has online below. This was probably done a month ago, and I do wonder if 60 Minutes was sitting on this piece for a few weeks just because they didn’t know if they wanted to air the interview following her robbery. Anyway… yeah, I still feel sorry for Kim. She unapologetically lived her life out in public, and it feels like many people believe that she “deserved” to be “punished” for that alone.

Screencaps from 60 Minutes.

    Of course she can.
What no one in that family can do is to keep things private. They feel the need to overshare every aspect of their lives and this is so so sad.
I honestly think that if Robert Kardashian was still alive things would have been very different for all of them. Kris has been a great manager but a terrible parent.

    • Desi says:

I mentioned it before, but in the clips I have seen something I have always noticed is the sharp difference in the way the kids talk about their dad versus the way they talk to Kris. With Kris they seem rude and sometimes downright hostile to her face. Meanwhile, when they talk about their dad they become very emotional and come off as actually being real. It’s more than just a kid missing their deceased parent. I get the impression that of the two parents, Robert Sr. was the loving, nurturing one and the kids miss having that.

      • Lorelai says:

@PAOLANQAR and Desi, that’s an interesting point to consider.

I don’t know much about Robert Kardashian beyond his role in the OJ trial, but there does seem to be a difference in how they talk about him as opposed to how they talk to or about Kris (or Caitlyn, for that matter).

      • kardashiantakedown says:

Can the Kardashian supporters answer these questions for me… because i still have a hard time believing anything that comes out of these people.

        1. The men on bikes… where are their police uniforms?

        2. the timing of the video… kim says they were in the apartment for only 6 minutes, lord knows, you can’t hog tie a pig in less than 10 minutes

        3. Her phone she is using, wasn’t that stolen?

        4. where are kouortney and the bodyguard who was supposedly there in a matter of minutes after the call?

    • Fl girl says:

They all make bank on the lack of privacy, and nothing else.

    • kardashiantakedown says:

Weird thing is where are the cops in uniform? these 5 male had no uniforms on. I really believe this was rounded up to be the closest form of evidence to prove she was not a liar. Secondly it probably came with a cost. They probably charged her a few million bucks to save her face from morphing any more than pinochios.

    • Lightpurple says:

I doubt Robert Kardashian would recognize that woman as his daughter without difficulty. Kanye recently released a collection of video clips of “Kimberly” and her father for her birthday. While most of the clips are of a young girl, some of them are of a developed late teen and a fully grown, pretty young woman, with normal sized breasts and butt and a face full of character who speaks without an infantalized affect. She has so distorted her body and altered her face so much that she hardly looks like the same person

  2. LiterallyaShambles says:

I’ve said a lot of sh!t about what I can handle before things actually got real and things happened to me. She was still in her bubble, before life reminded her that she’s not invincible. I don’t think this should be used against her at all, and I still feel sorry for her.

    • ReineDidon says:

Exactly. She is admitting that she got a career from social media and her unique ‘talent’ is creating a brand from being public and oversharing. She is unapologetic about her career and it deserves respect.
When oversharing threatened her life and well being she is taking time questioning it. As one should. I don’t blame her.

      • anna222 says:

ITA. I hate what the success of the Kardashian fame-ily business says about the state of culture today but I can’t blame them for that. She’s a human being who had something horrible happen to her and now she’s taking time to deal with it, let’s not crucify her for it.

  3. Allie B. says:

I still don’t feel bad for her. I don’t wish any harm her way, I just don’t care. This is what she asked for. This is what happens when you forget what’s real and what’s fake. Her life is a circus because that’s what she wanted. Rappers get robbed All.the.time. for acting the same way she does. It barely makes headlines. No one deserves to have what is theirs taken, but as they say you get it how you live. She is boring and this has made her less boring right on time.

    • Zip says:

“Rappers get robbed All.the.time. for acting the same way she does. It barely makes headlines.”

True, it doesn’t. Probably that’s why I never heard about this before. Can you provide some examples? Who gets robbed all the time?

    • lizzie says:

so by that logic every person with a fancy car who drives it every day – who worked and earned the money to buy it – deserves to have it vandalized or stolen? every person who wears an extravagant wedding ring deserves to be held up at gunpoint for flaunting their wealth? i’m sorry but what you’re saying is crazy.

      • ElleBee says:

I agree @lizzie. People should be able to wear the nice things that they worked for and not get robbed whether they flaunt them or not. “This is what she asked for” is a horrible thing to say. Of course she didn’t ask for it.

      • Tifygodess24 says:

@lizzie But that’s not what she said. There is the whole “live by the sword die by the sword” analogy. While it doesn’t mean she deserved to be robbed of course, sometimes certain lines of work (and yes her celebrity and social media habit is work) does put you in danger for certain situations and realities. That’s fact. No matter how much we wish or think the world should be different it doesn’t make it so. Ignoring it or getting mad when people call out the obvious is also ridiculous. Pretty sure she was trying to point out- why should Kim get anymore attention and/or worry than anyone else has when just like others have pointed out there have been other high profile celebs that have been robbed as well.

      • Alex says:

Of course not, but when you publicize every expensive item you own and flaunt your wealth, don’t be surprised when bad people decide to take it from you. It happens to “normal” people who shoot their mouth off about receiving inheritances or lottery winnings. Tell people you have nice stuff and they’ll want to take it . it’s pretty simple.

    • supposedtobeworking says:

I have an aunt who likes to flaunt her jewelry – she wears multiple pieces at once, always talks about her jewelry and brings attention to her material wealth. She is the only person in her immediate neighbourhood to be robbed, and it has happened to her multiple times (4 I think). And she always blamed her nanny for setting it up. So I’ve seen this situation up close and I do think that making yourself a target makes you a target.

      • Rachel says:

so if the Queen is ever robbed, I hope you will extrapolate your logic here and tell her that she gets no sympathy for living in a giant house known to be full of priceless paintings and valuable jewels in the middle of London.

      • swak says:

Comparing this situation to the Queen doesn’t make sense. The Queen does not put out there her wealth everyday for all to see. They also take security very seriously. No one should every be robbed or held up, but if you put everything out there you are making yourself a target. It is your right to do so, but you should also then take proper security precautions.

      • Rachel says:

Sorry, but how does the Queen not put her wealth out there everyday? She wears extremely expensive jewellery like brooches and earrings to daily events, and the most valuable items in her collection – the Crown Jewels – are on public display all year round, along with all of the valuable artwork she holds in trust for the nation?
Her entire life revolves around the ostentatious display of her wealth and whilst her security is tight – just like Kim’s is – nothing is foolproof. Princess Anne was almost kidnapped in 1974 and a man literally broke into the palace twice in 1982, the second time ending up in the Queen’s bedroom.

I think a lot of people are projecting their feelings about Kim onto what has happened to her. You can by all means believe that her excessive flaunting of wealth caused the robbery, but I think a comparison to a beloved public figure like the Queen does help illuminate some of the underlying bias and prejudice about Kim at play here.

    • Megan says:

The people responsible for the robbery are the robbers. Kim is not responsible or accountable for the criminal actions of others.

  4. SunnyD says:

I actually feel for her more after reading that. I can imagine it hit her harder because she thought she was invincible.

  5. anniefannie says:

I think her face is morphing into that chick from the pussycats!? blanking on her name?
I do like her hair looking more undone.
She’s smart to take a break from social media…..how can we miss you if you never go away….

  6. Not A Fan says:

I still don’t believe it happened, and the only reason she’s disappeared is because she’s probably getting a new round of procedures done.

    • A says:

I agree. There seems to be too many questions and different versions of the whole thing. And then there’s that weird video of her after the robbery.

I think this was her retirement plan. Her “Greta Garbo”. Her way to live more secluded and by that increase her value when it comes to appearences and interviews.

    • Chetta B. says:

Yes, and this is a woman who denies having lip fillers, appearing with freshly plumped-up lips, big-time. Add me to the list of people who don’t feel sorry for her. She aggressively pursued fame and she achieved that. Deal with it.

    • lisa says:

      i dont believe it either

    • Lorelai says:

@Not a Fan and others, I’m relieved to read your comments because I know this is an extremely (!) unpopular opinion to have here on CB, but I still don’t believe her, either.

I also think there’s a difference between “unapologetically living your life in public” and…what Kim K. does. There is a middle ground that many celebrities manage.

She goes beyond just “living her life,” IMO. She courts attention 24/7, walks around half naked a lot of the time, ruins lives in the process (if the fake wedding/quickie divorce for the sake of the show is to be believed), and there is nothing too vulgar for her if it will get her press.

Just to clarify: I don’t wish her ill in any way. But I don’t think she’s deserving of anyone’s sympathy, either.

    • JudyK says:

I have never believed it, either, and, interestingly enough, I saw a documentary about Quinn Hanna Gray, the woman who had said she was kidnapped (in order to get money). It’s amazing how her story is identical to Kim’s. She even had marks on her ankles and wrists where she had been zip-tied in the same manner Kim said she was, and she also said she had her mouth taped, same as Kim. Her story was, of course, proven to be a total scam and she had to repay law enforcement and was sentenced to 8 or 10 years probation (can’t remember which).

The stories are identical, and I mean identical.

      • A says:

There’s a video of Kim directly after the robbery. No visible marks on her arms. The video even pauses and zooms in to show… absolutely no evidence of her being brutally robbed and tied up.

      • jwoolman says:

Kim is quite capable of lying about the details, but unless they are truly desperate for the insurance money- the risk in faking the entire thing seems just too high for her to take. Plus two other people were pulled into it (the concierge and her stylist). Just having armed men burst in would be enough to traumatize me…. No need for the rest. So we don’t really know how much truth there is in the rest of her story. Kim does make up a lot of stuff for effect. But that doesn’t mean she isn’t having trouble dealing with the aftermath.

Anybody here from Paris? What do Parisians think about the likelihood of a famous foreigner faking a robbery and lying to local police?

    • Littlestar says:

I don’t believe it happened either, I do not put it beyond the Kardashians to use a fake robbery and fake trauma for public sympathy and a storyline. They use sham marriages, plastic surgery, sex, life and death situations (Lamar Odom) and kids for publicity; I do not put it beyond them to fake a robbery.

    • HappyMom says:

Yes-call me cynical, but they do stuff like this ALL the time. Perhaps it happened, but I’m not going to be remotely surprised down the road if it’s all revealed to be as fake as their faces and bodies.

    • Babs says:

I like Kim K since she got with Kanye (I didn’t follow her before) and I respect her. I don’t believe the robbery story though. I mean come on. Not a receipt in sight from our Receipts Queen. Her version of events doesn’t hold together. Klassic Kardashian.
I sure hope she’s getting rid of that dreadful ass. She started a process about it some time ago I think. Khloe is going to be so mad. The second she achieves the centaur look it goes out of style.

    • Snowflake says:

      I dont believe her either.

    • minx says:

      I don’t believe it either.

  7. Sam says:

I don’t wish any harm on her. And I don’t think she deserved it but that doesn’t mean I have to feel bad for her either. It’s clear she thought she was above everything….her privacy was clearly not important to her based on how she behaved and what she said in this interview. So if she didn’t care then why should I? Now if this was a celebrity who was extremely private all the time and it happened, yea I’d feel some type of way. But Kim K has made a living publicizing everything so I will not feel bad/sorry for her in the slightest bit. I do wish her the best and hope she recovers from this traumatic experience because I don’t think anyone should go through what she did….but other than that. Nope.

  8. Kimma says:

I’m still hoping she will come out of this as a learning lesson and realize material things aren’t everything and with all her money do something good for the world. that would be the ultimately best case scenario. fingers crossed. But with a family like hers…based all on what you have…that may be a really tough.

  9. Pandy says:

I wish she’d go away permanently, but I doubt we will be that lucky. Please take your obnoxious no-talent family with you!

  10. CoconutOil says:

People have been robbed and killed for less. I was 11 years the first time I was robbed at gun point for my BIKE, IN BROAD DAYLIGHT! I think she’s having such a hard time with this because she’s been living in her rich bubbled privileged life since forever.

  11. Suzanne says:

She can “handle the loss of privacy”. She THRIVES ON IT!

  12. Babs says:

Just wait for the dramatic makeover in a few months.
I must say I admire this woman. She is skilled at what she does.

  13. me says:

It’s not a “talent” when you have a whole team of people doing it ALL for you.

  14. Lucy says:

I know her family is not exactly known for being #AllAboutTheTruth, but I appreciate her candor in that interview.

  15. tw says:

I’m not proud, but yesterday I had a very lazy Sunday and I ended up watching 15 minutes of their show for the first time in at least 5 years. In the episode, Kourtney and Khloe confront Kylie about posting her location on social media and play a prank on her to “teach” her a lesson. I’m sorry, but this is the first time I’ve doubted Kim’s version of events in Paris. The dangers of posting location was a plot line in the show! If she comes out with an ass half its size and a “new look” in a couple of weeks, I will be convinced this was a plastic surgery recovery break and media stunt. Also, why weren’t her kids with her at that hotel?! They were in Paris but her friend was in the spare bedroom and not the kids or nanny?
Ok, OK, I don’t know if I really believe it was a stunt, but some things are suspicious and I don’t think she has grounds to sue anyone over the speculation.

    • Rachel says:

Her kids weren’t in Paris during the robbery, they were back home in LA.

Similarly, I don’t think you can say that the robbery was down to Kim being reckless or lazy in allowing geotagging on her Snapchat. It’s clear she was targeted and robbed by a group of professional jewel thieves who I highly doubt pick their targets based on who geotags their social media posts. I’m still of the opinion that someone from the apartment was in on the job and was able to leak information to them about Kim being alone in her room, without her bodyguards in the apartment.

      • Lorelai says:

I remember reading at the time that her kids WERE in Paris at the time, just at a different hotel.

Maybe that was incorrect info, but it was definitely reported at the time of the incident because I clearly remember wondering why on earth her children wouldn’t be staying at the same hotel as her (even if they were in a different room with a nanny, or something).

That was also part of what made me doubt the robbery story. They made sure the kids were safely tucked away someplace else. I just can’t put anything past this family.

    • jwoolman says:

I agree she should not be suing anybody over disbelief that she was robbed. She’s a chronic liar and has set up false events before, so skepticism is pretty reasonable. She is just going to draw more attention to herself this way and that may backfire. Even though I believe she was robbed, it’s quite possible that she has lied about some of the details. She especially needs to be careful because the insurance company is investigating, and if they discover or suspect she’s lied about anything then they will start questioning the whole thing. They are not going to easily let go of millions of dollars. If she just ignored the speculation, as something media does with tabloid celebrities, she would have been better off. But that’s another habit she has – suing people for no good reason.

  16. me says:

I’m pretty sure she will talk about the robbery during a very special episode of KUWTK. They foreshadowed it last night on the season premiere. Khloe put her hands up in a gun motion literally out of no where and Kim said “don’t make that motion I hate guns”. Very interesting… makes me wonder if that scene was shot AFTER the robbery and they made it seem like it was shot before? Anything is possible with this family.

  17. Marlena says:

I have a probem with her saying people like her for who she is. The Kardashians cultivate an image, they constantly stage, fake and script their life- that`s why it`s called scripted reality. Most of what we see on their show is not their real life, it is a cultivated image. I also disagree with her sentiment that people actually love her. The majority does not- they love to hate her. True, she makes money from it but why not call it like it is.

    • Goldie says:

It’s true that a lot of people watch KUWTK because they love to hate on them. The show is only part of the brand, though. I would imagine that most of the people who are buying her products, coming out to see her at events, playing her video game actually like her. I don’t get the fascination, personally. Never even watched her show, but apparently there are people who actually idolize her.
