Mel Gibson on his 2006 DUI arrest: ‘I’ve never discriminated against anyone’

When I read the Variety headline, “Mel Gibson on 2006 Anti-Semitic Remarks: ‘I’ve Never Discriminated Against Anyone’,” I actually made this face. Like, are you kidding me? Sure, let’s do this, Mel. The initial Mel incident came in 2006, when he was arrested for a DUI in Malibu. While being arrested, Mel said to the cop, “F—king Jews, Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world… are you a Jew?” Mad Mel was spewing anti-Semitism and profanity quite heavily during his arrest, all of which made it into the cop’s official arrest report, which became public record soon after Mel’s arrest. That was a decade ago. In that time, we’ve also learned that Mel is a woman-beater who screamed profanities at his girlfriend because she didn’t blow him in the Jacuzzi, and that he freely threatened her with physical harm repeatedly. But as I said, let’s do this! Here’s what Mel has to say about the 2006 arrest now:

“It was an unfortunate incident,” Mel Gibson said on “Playback” when asked about the fact that there are many who feel they can no longer support him or his work. “I was loaded and angry and arrested. I was recorded illegally by an unscrupulous police officer who was never prosecuted for that crime. And then it was made public by him for profit, and by members of — we’ll call it the press. So, not fair. I guess as who I am, I’m not allowed to have a nervous breakdown, ever.”

“Ten years have gone by,” Gibson stated. “I’m feeling good. I’m sober, all of that kind of stuff, and for me it’s a dim thing in the past. But others bring it up, which kind of I find annoying, because I don’t understand why after 10 years it’s any kind of issue. Surely if I was really what they say I was, some kind of hater, there’d be evidence of actions somewhere. There never has been.”

Gibson also said he doesn’t consider himself a hateful person, and that his actions were a result of the copious amount of alcohol he consumed on that night.

“I’ve never discriminated against anyone or done anything that sort of supports that reputation,” the actor/director said. “And for one episode in the back of a police car on eight double tequilas to sort of dictate all the work, life’s work and beliefs and everything else that I have and maintain for my life is really unfair.”

[From Variety]

Yeah… still a f—king a—hole, I see. Dude, you were arrested! Arrests are public record. While I don’t doubt that someone on the police force decided to profit from the recording, the words he said during his arrest were still going to be recorded on paper for the arrest report. We still would have known that he said those things no matter what, is my point. Beyond that, in what world is “I had eight double tequilas and got behind the wheel, I’m the real victim here!” ever applicable? He was 50 years old at the time and while rampant alcoholism has no age limit, being a violent narcissist with a martyr complex has no age limit either. You are not the most aggrieved person in the world, Mad Mel.

He’s shown that he doesn’t discriminate in his angry rants. It’s not like he would have been civil to a non-Jewish cop.

  2. trollontheloose says:

Trump ” I am the least racist”, “i am more the most respectful man toward women”, “i never groped anyone”..
Mel Gibson’s tapes spoke for themselves.

  3. Nikki says:

The scary pic of him reminds me of the saying: the face you have at fifty is the face you’ve earned.

    • MrsBPitt says:

Nikki…you are so right! Just to be superficial for a moment, remember how gorgeous Mel was when he first came to Hollywood! But, you are right “the face your have at fifty is the face you’ve earned” that really does apply to Mel….

    • noway says:

Okay, not sure what you are talking about, because his arrest picture at 50 sorry to say he doesn’t look that bad. Now him at 60 above, I see your point.

      • Nikki says:

Yes, I guess it took until 60 with him, but he went from beautiful to scary in a way that has nothing to do with wrinkles or gray hair, but expression…

  4. Clare says:

Aawwww pooor puffin finds it annoying…all the tears for him.

  5. QQ says:

    Whatever Angry dry drunk ham

  6. SilverUnicorn says:

*facepalm* if Trump doesn’t win the elections, Gibson is running for president next…. level of lies and denials seems the same!

  7. Aims says:

Ok Mel…. I guess we’re supposed to forget when you threaten your baby mama and told her you would hide her in the rose bushes . You’re a class act…… dbag .

  8. Margo S. says:

I will say this. Being the daughter and grand daughter of addicts, they aren’t necessarily bad people. The stuff that is said when an addict/alcoholic consumes alcohol are a lot of the time, pure evil. But when they are sober, they aren’t like that. Most of the time they don’t even know what they said. My father still drinks and I don’t really have a relationship with him, but back when my grandpa was alive, he did stop drinking. No matter how evil he may have been, he realized he needed and wanted to change.

So I guess I look at mel, who’s sober now, and in a way I am proud of him. I’ve seen how hard it can be to stop drinking, and he did it. Not that you can forgive him for his hateful behavior and comments, and not sure his choice of words in playback were wise, but I can’t hate on him. This was an addict who finally hit his rock bottom and he’s gotten help and is now sober. I admire that.

    • Dlo says:

Thank you @Margo s for your compassion. It is needed in the world today.

    • Jesie says:

I’m not sure he’s sober, he was apparently a real mess in Australia whenever Hacksaw Ridge wasn’t shooting. If he doesn’t act like he’s sober though, with his history there’s no way in hell he’s insurable, and now that his name is dirt he’s remarkably less willing to put his own money on the line to make films.

There’s a lot of alcoholics and addicts in my family and my line of work. They’ll say anything and everything if you’re standing between them and their toxin of choice, but when they’re just drunk or high and ranting, that’s all them. Booze especially just lowers inhibitions. It doesn’t have the power to put brand new angry and bigoted thoughts in your head, it just has the power to make you think it’s ok to say them out loud.

    • Denyse Prendergast says:

Good for you. Blessed are the peacemakers…

  9. Radley says:

Everybody knows alcohol is a truth serum, Mel. That’s the issue. Don’t sidestep the fact that when you’re angry, your anti-semitism comes pouring out. Don’t forget when you were also angry at your baby mama and hoped that she would get “raped by a pack of n*ggers”. He’s a quintessential modern day hater. They never like to admit it or own it. And gosh, the only reason they occasionally go there is because everyone’s against them. Yeah right.

    • noway says:

Alcohol is NOT a truth serum. Think about some of the things you have done while on alcohol are they really your truth!!!! Hopefully not for the majority of people who drink. This is truly a dangerous message to put out there, because people lie a lot on alcohol. It lowers inhibitions, but it doesn’t necessarily mean the girl really wants to have sex with you, or they really wanted to jump off a bridge it just means the thought crossed their mind and they’d give it a try.

Now his comments today sober about his actions are worrisome. No your whole life shouldn’t be about a drunken “bad moment,” but if you are a famous man who made around a billion dollars in your lifetime you really should realize they are going to still talk about your “bad moments.” Also, you are naive to think that maybe your publicity about the foul you spewed didn’t hurt someone.

  10. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

Exactly @radley – lots of alcoholics in my family, including my mother. I found it to be a truth serum – all the stuff she’d been dying to say to me came spewing out.

Same with me. I started drinking as an underage kid. Luckily, I got it out of my system back then. But again with the truth serum – all the stuff I didn’t have the courage to say while sober came out.

    • noway says:

This is what people say sometime, but my question is did you really mean what you said or is it a thought you had, but if you really thought about it you wouldn’t say it. We all have those fleeting nasty thought about maybe how someone looks, but it could be misplaced anger or something and we wouldn’t say it sober. I wouldn’t call it truth. Now this might be you and yes it was your truth, however, not everyone is the same. Scientifically, alcohol is a depressant that slows your central nervous system and body down, and if you have depression it can cause all sorts of issues including inappropriate remarks. I find this a very dangerous message for young people especially, because alcohol does not equal truth. I wouldn’t ever believe what a drunk person says even if it is good,

This makes me so sad. I used to love Mel (he was my #1 Hollywood crush back in the day), but now….I wanted him so badly to redeem himself, but it seems that ship has sailed. I still respect & love his body of work, but I’m done with him.

  12. Nicole says:

What about the fact with that drunk being behind the wheel is putting his and other’s lives in danger? Otherwise, I am glad his rock bottom wasn’t death.

  13. Joannie says:

I think he’s a terrific actor. I dont care about his private life.
