Here is your Election Day Open Post and I’m really, really hoping that everything turns out okay. Like, the choice today was between the first woman to ever win a major party’s presidential nomination… or the apocalypse. The Orange Apocalypse. I’m hoping that by this time tomorrow, Donald Trump will just be universally reviled as “that racist, misogynistic, baby-fisted douchebag.” I’m hoping that all of the predictions and pollsters are right, and that Hillary is winning this thing with a decent electoral college margin.
Our open post host is none other than President Barack Obama. I love him so much and I wish he was running for his third term, because I believe he would totally win and it wouldn’t even be close. Trump kept saying throughout the election that Hillary would be Obama’s third term, like that’s a bad thing. Like that isn’t the biggest endorsement to her candidacy. We need to soak in these last months with Pres. Obama. We’re going to miss him so much.
I already admitted to crying as I stood in line, waiting for the polls to open. I honestly did think of Susan B. Anthony, the Suffragettes who worked for years to ensure women’s right to vote, and how much blood has been spilled so that I could stand there in Virginia – now a reliably blue/purple state!! – and vote for the first woman president. As it turns out, I wasn’t alone – many women have been telling their “I Voted” stories and how everyone was surprised by how emotional and uplifting it felt. As for the electoral map – lots of experts have been weighing in on Election Day, but I’m going with Larry Sabato’s more conservative map. I’ll be fine if HRC walks away with 300-plus electoral votes.

1st person to vote in my district today and there were about 50 people behind me by the time the polls opened. I wish I’d worn white but I rolled out of bed and put on whatever wasn’t too wrinkled.
You voted, that’s far more important than the outfit!
I got up at 4:30 a.m. to ensure I was first in line. I wasn’t first; I was third, but I got in early and got my vote in for Hillary and then I came home and celebrated with Bloody Mary’s. No, I’m not driving…I am in for the day–and night, hopefully celebrating our first woman President.
Oh, how I will miss our gorgeous, articulate, smooth, smart President. I can’t even imagine a United States w/ The Orange One as Commander-in-Chief.
I’m trying hard to believe in Nate Silver’s and Sam Wang’s predictions and will be glued to CNN and MSNBC for the rest of the day.
I can definitely use some comfort about now. Voted at around 8:30 (NJ) record turnout according to everyone – workers and other voters. Two machines were down at the start and 1 stayed broken the entire time (unacceptable really). A lot of Trump voters 🙁 Reports from our neighboring town was record turnout too with lots of people wearing Trump hats & tshirts. Come on cities balance us out.
I hope those people were made to remove their hats and cover up their shirts or turn them inside out. My sister wore a Hillary button to vote in SD. She was told to remove it by poll workers. She was mad until I explained to her any and all campaign and campaign materials are banned within 100 feet of an entrance to a polling place.
EM-where in NJ? I’m in Warren County and driving to the polls and all around my neighborhood I’m inundated with signs for The Orange One Who Shall Not Be Named. It’s really depressing. I’ve broken off doing business for good with a lot of local businesses who have the T/P sign up. I’m just hoping for the rest of NJ to pull us through for Hillary. (and the country for that matter!!) Stress!!!

Early exit polls have 40% of College Grads voting for Trump – WTH are they teaching these kids? Obviously nothing about experience, substance and temperament.
No machines in Hawaii! I kid you not; we filled in rectangles with blue or black ink, then fed our two-page ballot into a ballot box that could read barcodes. Whatever works!

I vote in my “pantsuit” today! It felt great, and I got teary as usual.
I wore a pantsuit, too. I only have one, and too bad it’s not a flamboyant color, it’s a drab olive. Eh. Husband wore a snow white shirt.

Broken water heaters, minor flooding, Strep throat and tough conversations with fundies I knew growing up. I couldn’t wait to hit the reset button and get back to work yesterday!

Absolutely nausea has been the theme for the day. Especially when every report begins with “Trump” this and “Trump” that. As the microinsults continue.
“If Trump wins this state” vs. “If Hillary loses that state”. Indefinite, passive language when referring to the female candidate, decisive language about the Cheetoh even when it’s things he’s lying through his teeth about. It’s been a real lesson on the persistence of isms in this country.

I know the feeling. I am here in Australia, glued to my TV. Luckily it’s only 10.30am here, so I doubt I will be moving all day. I felt the same with Brexit. These decisions impact the whole world, especially a small country like us in Aus. Our stock market, has been very reflective of the changes in the polls. It’s very scary.
I am still in shock that it’s this close… but I can assure you my fingers, toes, legs are well and truly crossed for Hillary.

I ran to the store in my “Nasty Women Vote” t-shirt and there was almost a holiday atmosphere. Then on my way home I saw a wonderful thing! A house had a display of red, white and blue balloon letters about eight feet tall spelling out VOTE. It was so great. Then another house had a great scene: a Trump piñata was on the ground covered in fake blood while a Hillary piñata stood over him with a machete. It was all circled with crime tape! Celebrate!

I voted two weeks ago thinking it would help my anxiety about today and yet it hasn’t. It flared this morning early when I got stuck in the elevator with the one co-worker you avoid at the holiday party because she tends to get wasted and has to be taken care of. She immediately starts in on how she can’t until today is over and I politely nod in agreement. Then she says I just hope whoever gets it doesn’t screw it to much more than the country is already messed up and I just let that statement hang in silence because seriously lady… I just can’t with people who feel like that, we have come a long way in eight years.
People have short attention spans, but how can any adult forget the state of the economy left to BO in 2008.
I get teary eyed just thinking about the Obamas leaving the White House. But, when Hillary is elected, it will be another milestone for this country. She’ll do a great job, she’s got the background and experience. The Trump supporters aren’t going to make anything easy for her though, and their hatred knows no bounds. These next four years will be challenging.

I wish Alice Paul was getting the attention Susan B Anthony is today. Anthony is a lot like Hillary in that she took credit for other people’s work. Paul was instrumental in getting suffrage over the finish line and Anthony repaid her by making sure she was excluded from the bill signing.

Nate Silver has her back over 71% now, and another predictor I saw said 91% chance for HRC. Less than 12 hours to go!
Remember all those who fought and were jailed and DIED for our right to vote, those who stood up for civil rights, for women’s rights, for equality for all. It’s been less than 100 years since the 19th amendment, and just over 50 years for the Voting Rights Act.
Don’t sit it out. Don’t take for granted that your state will go a certain way. Don’t think your vote doesn’t count.
My mother in law voted early even though she knew she only had a few days left to live. I get choked up thinking about it. The family brought her in a wheelchair and as you can imagine it was not easy. If this amazing lady can do it, we can all vote! Every vote matters. Nasty Women Vote! (I saw a photo of another elderly lady who also voted right before she passed away. These ladies are simply inspiring.)
How emotional. Your mother-in-law sounds like an amazing women. I am crying.

Yay! My first presidential election was in 2008 and it was an amazing experience.
Awesomeness! I remember when I first voted, it was for Bill Clinton. My parents took me to our precinct. They were so proud. They are both deceased now but I look back on that moment with gratitude.
Popped up on my FB, that a woman in labor stopped and voted! Voted early this morning myself.
Nervous today. But also saddened by how many of my coworkers are disenfranchised by this election. I pled with them to vote – even if you don’t choose a major party president, at least vote for the sake of the legislative bodies. Your local and state governments affect you just as significantly as your federal.

In all seriousness, I avoid most social media sites on election days. I’m working all day, though, so I gave the benefit of that distraction.
Two goals before the next election: National (Paid?!) Holiday for Election Day, and
dissolving the Electoral College in favor of the Popular Vote.
I’d like any victory for Hillary but I’d love and overwhelming one. I’m sure Trump and his supporters will still say it’s rigged but I’d love a huge statement win. The fact that Utah is in the leaning Republican and not solidly Republican is a good sign as is Arizona not being a sure thing.
It would be really nice if bigotry could be defeated soundly!
I voted with my mom. We waited two hours and by the time we got our ballots I was ready to burst into tears. I’m so glad I was able to share that moment with the best mom in the world!

I wonder whose going to win? I think I’ll be up all night to find out. However, I don’t believe who ever wins will make a big difference in the lives of the people. I remember when the black community was so excited about Barack Obama, but they are very disappointed that he didn’t do enough for them.
I have a lot of cynical thoughts like that too. I mean I’m hopeful, but I’m also skeptical about how much change one president could even do at this point. I have to fight the pessimism but wanted you to know I have thoughts like these as well.

Hate to burst bubbles, but Trump will definitely make a huge negative difference into people’s lives. First he really is capable of starting WWIII all by his little self, as well as starting a multitude of other wars and warlets. He also will try to dismantle ACA, bringing us back to the time when we could be denied coverage for pre-existing conditions and one injury or serious illness would use up our meager lifetime limit for coverage, and many of us would not be able to afford insurance at all (I had to quit once premiums reached 53% of my income). He will terrorize immigrants and refugees and inspire more violence against them – just his candidacy has hurt schoolchildren who are being bullied in his name. I could go on, but you get the point.
The fact is that it really does matter who is in the White House. Charming Ronald Reagan promised to dismantle government programs, and he did. He trashed the college work-study program that had been so helpful to both students and the institutions. He cut back on environmental and safety regulations. Leaks at nuclear power plants were dealt with by simply changing the environmental contamination thresholds. He appointed people who trashed conservation programs (pre-millennialists who were expecting the Second Coming in their lifetime, so why conserve and preserve?). Safety inspector cutbacks for railroads and aircraft were serious enough that I had no desire to use such transportation – the planes were getting older…. He broke the air traffic controller strike and put on new people who within a few years were making the same complaints as the original strikers, most of them safety-related. He waged illegal wars which had a devastating effect on people in the regions affected. He cut back on programs helping poor children and their families, and charities couldn’t make up the difference. One soup kitchen in DC was aimed entirely at school age children who were hungry, they charged them a penny for good food (figuring they could find pennies on the street and would feel better about it if they “paid”). Signs of protein deficiency disease (kwashiorkor) were seen in Chicago in children whose families had lost benefits.
I took my aunt to get the small Social Security death benefit ($255) when her husband died and made a snarky remark about how puny it was. She told me that amount when the program started could make a difference between a family staying together or not. In the old days, at best kids were farmed out to relatives – she and my mom had lived in fear of that happening to them when their mother died and their dad lost his job and savings in the Great Depression. Their older cousins had lived with them for a while for that reason, so they knew that could happen. They were afraid that they would be separated from each other and from their dad. A friend said food stamps really saved her family when her dad was unemployed for an extended period. There used to be stories about senior citizens reduced to eating cheap dog food. Social Security and Medicare have made a considerable difference to so many people. But these were all programs that at one time were vigorously opposed by many Republicans. If they were in total power, none of those programs would have started.
Imagine if George Bush hadn’t gone to the Supreme Court to stop the Florida recount when Al Gore, who won the popular vote in 2000, had called for a recount that undoubtedly would have given him Florida’s electoral votes and the Presidency. No Gulf War, no invasion and occupation of Iraq, no pointless war in Afghanistan to destroy so many lives (including huge numbers of civilians) and drain our economy. Probably no 9/11, since Gore would have been unlikely to ignore Intelligence warnings as Bush did.
So don’t ever think that all politicians are the same, that it doesn’t matter who is in the White House. It really does. Some are better than others in many different ways. Some do a considerable amount of harm when given the chance.

Elizabeth – you have to start somewhere. Obama is a person, he can’t be a savior to everyone. But he started the ball rolling. I think Chris Rock said he wanted to “be able to fail like a white man” , where white men can fail (Trump bankruptcy, anyone) and be given the chance to try their luck again and again. That’s the barrier we need to break. Hillary can get the ball rolling. Our daughters and granddaughters will take it from there.

Florida early voter here. This morning I put on a white shirt, my I Voted Early sticker, and a rainbow ribbon.
I’ve had so much anxiety ever since the FBI’s latest attempt at electioneering. I’ve tried to make peace with the idea of a Trump presidency. Because my heart will be crushed if that’s what happens tonight. But today I am choosing to hope and to believe in the fundamental decency of people.
I’m hoping for some voting-booth conversions. Many in my extended family are Republicans, but they are (mostly) decent human beings, so I’m really hoping they will realize the error of their ways before they commit to the orange menace.

I’m going to miss him so much. I’m literally tearing up looking at the pic you posted. He really is a special leader. So smart but also so thoughtful and insightful. Amazing man. I don’t think we’ll have another leader like Barack Obama for a long time if ever.
Having said that I honestly feel Hillary will surprise people and end up being a much better President than expected. She won’t be transformational or inspiring like President Obama or as charismatic as Bill. But she’s damn smart, works her ass off, resilient as hell, extremely pragmatic and able to work side by side with people who have frankly treated her and her family like crap. (Regarding the latter, lots of GOP Senators liked her.) She’s been ridiculously vilified by the GOP that they’ve set the bar super low.
Mail in ballot here in Kansas. While my state will go red, I certainly placed my vote blue up and down the ticket. My vote counts more in the local and state elections, but I had to cast my vote according to my morals. I like the hashtag #imwithher, but love the old Girl Scouts tagline #togetherthere. I think we will get her there, together!

I got emotional too after voting. All I could think of was my father. He grew up in the segregated south, a time when the Klan rode on horseback. He got involved in the civil rights movement when he was in college. He told me about the time he got arrested in Georgia in the 60s for eating at a white restaurant. When I got accepted to the local university, I remember how proud he was because he remembers when blacks weren’t allowed to attend there. I’m glad he lived long enough to see the first black president, something he thought he would never see. I vote because he fought for the right for his children to have that privilege.

Trump is going to lose. I feel pretty certain about that. But he and his ilk are going to drag this out and do everything in their power to try to de-legitimize Hillary’s Presidency. I’m completely sickened by these people at this point.

It reads like they might be trying to get the names of the volunteers and possibly the voters. Knowing the Drumpf group, they’d release the names and addresses “accidentally”.
There were live feeds from Clark County that showed the long lines waiting to vote on that last evening of early voting. The news reporters said that it was a three-hour wait, so if they had a line at 7, it stands to reason they stayed open until 10, so the last person in line at 7 could cast a ballot. That footage clearly shows what happened, and it followed precinct policy.
This is just a frivolous legal move that will hopefully be quickly dismissed. But I get what you are saying. He will never be a gracious loser.

The state of Hawaii has already made it clear that as long as people are in line at the time polls close, they will be allowed to vote. As it should be. Trump has no legal hope of invalidating those Nevada ballots or any others.

I’m always surprised by all the people in different countries that have an investment in our election. I know it shouldn’t surprise me! It just underscores the importance of the office of the presidency of the United States. That’s why it blows my mind that so many people are voting for Trump.
The rest of the world will absolutely be affected by the POTUS so we are all watching, waiting with baited breath.
I had my first chemo session Thursday. It was long, and difficult, and there’s been quite a bit of pain though luckily very little nausea (well-controlled by drugs) since then.
I voted Tuesday last, before my session, because ..I just didn’t know how it would go and didn’t want to risk not being able to make it to the polls.
The outcome of this election is more important than the outcome of my chemo.

Your words resonate, but I don’t know that it is “being brave” so much as a certain fatalism: recovery for me is whole-heartedly desired, but whether I’m around or not life will suck at the very least if Cheeto Jeebus is somehow elected. I need to know my mother and other friends/family aren’t going to have to live in that world.
Asking for help is a hard lesson to learn, isn’t it? The first big thing I’ve learned is this: pay attention to the people who have gone there before. Like you, and like my boss who texts me every single day just to ask what’s up and if I need her. I love you all, for being kind enough to share your light–the signal fires for those of us who come after.

This election has made me more thoughtful and reflective than any other presidential election in memory. I realize how much I have taken for granted. I’ve thought about my parents (who both died last year), and how they talked about the important decisions such as Medicare and Social Security that greatly helped my grandparents and future elders.
My mother never bought into nonstop slander about Hillary, and my Dad always watched Bill whenever he was being interviewed. He talked about how smart Bill was. I think another common link was because both were born in rural poverty during the 1940s, and did the best they could to improve their situation.
I was so proud to cast my early vote for HRC for many reasons. My thanks to so many of you on this site, from near and far, who have made these months more bearable.
Bill Clinton is a brilliant man.
I also have been up and down these last months. I couldn’t bear it at some points But here we are, election day, finally It’s been a long road. The anxiety will begin kicking in as the results start coming in. I’m pretty confident Hillary will win, but that confidence will fly out the window if Florida goes to Trump. I don’t want a horrible, long night. I need positivity as the results come in. I want it locked down, and God forbid, not some huge upset by Trump.
CNN just showed Hillary’s motorcade leaving her Chappaqua residence heading to downtown NYC to a hotel where she will be with her team and family watching the results. I got teary-eyed watching the aerial of that long motorcade traveling down the road. It’s been a long fight for Hillary to get to this day, and the big moment is here. History in the making..
I spent last week trying to accept the possibility of an orange win (I don’t like using the name). Let’s hope your prediction that FL will go blue comes true.

After dropping off my ballot, I stopped at Costco. The woman parked next to me asked if I would give her car a jump start. We tried unsuccessfully for a few minutes. Her battery was totally dead. Then, a kind man came over and asked if he could help. With his assistance and some patience, we got her car started again. We all thanked each other and parted ways.
America, no matter the outcome today, we’re already winning. We’ve got a good country, good people, and we’re in good hands — each other’s. Our battery won’t die unless we give up. Let’s work together, stay connected and go!

I’m proud for the voters at our early voting place. 3 hours in line. Probably 300 people at least. Very little complaint. Respectful and quiet (being a library with reading material helped!) We were an example to the school kids who were there to study. The election judges were helpful. Nobody intimated anybody else. I realized what a good moment that was. I want more good moments like that for our country.

Btw I’ve been following social media throughout the day and I’m beyond irked at members of the media calling out Taylor Swift in regards to her actions this election. 1). Since when did we decide who to vote for based on what a celebrity says? 2). It’s our right as Americans to have a private ballot. 3). Why do they automatically assume she’s a Trump supporter when everyone she associates with publicly (Karlie Kloss, Gigi, Lorde, Jack Antoff, Lena Dunham, Blake Lively, Martha Hunt etc) are all Hilary supporters? I don’t know why but it just bothered me especially when I don’t see male celebrities who have been quiet on who they’re voting for not get the same ridicule. But either way the media should take a hint based on who she’s associated herself with and leave her alone. We have a woman who is about to become president and they’re focused on who Taylor Swift is voting for.

A few minutes ago, a news show had a view of both candidates’ celebration venues. There are already people at Hillary’s, yet only one person strolling through the other candidate’s. Hers looked bright and festive; his was desolate and dark. My husband said, “Where’s Chachi?” (Our running joke is about his ‘celebrity’ support.)
The latest “rumor” (i.e., Trump campaign’s conspiracy theory) has it that the Clintons paid Jay-Z and Beyoncé $62 million to perform their concert in Cleveland to secure Black votes. At this point I’m just dead from all the shame and ridicule Trump and his apparent fan base have brought upon our Nation.
For a little levity:
I came home early after voting#WithHer, with a little side trip to the wine store(without the ‘h’ my smarty hubs requested). As soon as I got in I turned on the TV to check for updates and it was still on the Weather Channel from this morning. They have a special program, until 12am EST, titled Escape the Election! It’s several hours of beautiful, bucolic scenery with a soothing jazz, new age soundtrack. Ohm! My first belly laugh of the day.
It’s going to be a long night, but here’s to an election that proves we are still a good and decent people. Peace be to all!
My grandmother became a citizen at 81 last fall and voted for the first time in the US today! She’s lives here as a resident for 25 years and the prospect of a woman president really excited her. It was really special to see how happy she was today.

However, when I go into Athens I see many more Hillary signs..but you know this state swings red. I made it a point of walking my 2 very small daughters down to my voting place this morning. My tired 4-year-old asked why we had to vote because “the lady already won.” (At least according to the kids vote on Nickelodeon last night). Thanks @Melly! They have their moments. We talked a little more about voting after I picked them up from school…the 4-year-old told me that the lady already won because “she said all the words Mommy. All the good words.” I couldn’t really argue with that logic.
It’s seriously encouraging that the Nickelodeon kids vote went to Hillary. Until 2004 (with all the strange irregularities with those machines), that was a reliable indicator of the outcome. Haven’t followed it since, but here’s hoping they’re back to prime predictor status!

No big deal. It was expected that Trump would win there. You need to watch out for Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, and Michigan. If Hillary wins those, it’s game over for Trump.

Virginia nasty woman here. She’s going to win Virginia. The votes from Northern Virginia and the Richmond area hasn’t been fully counted. Thus far, most of the rural counties are being counted and the rural areas always go republican. Virginia goes blue because of Northern VA, Richmond area, and Charlottesville area. Watch for those highly populated areas.
She has Illinois and Maryland and New Jersey and several New England states. Sizable chunks of electoral votes.
Don’t worry about VA. They showed the county map, and the southern ones reporting are what I call ‘red’neck regions. Wait for Arlington and larger, traditionally blue counties to report.

Actually, no. Some states can actually split the electoral vote. Two or three of them, I think, but I can’t remember which ones they are.
Nebraska is the other with five electoral votes. Nebraska and Maine are the only two. However, an elector can actually vote differently than they should albeit with consequences. They are called a “faithless elector” and may be fined tens of thousands of dollars by the state’s electoral committee. Had a contractor at my house today, who assumed I voted Trump and I set him straight. At the end we got to speaking and he told me how he had walked 8 miles to vote for JFK way back when. This man (in his 70’s) switched from Democrat to Trump and I just don’t get it.

In Michigan here, can confirm we usually look red til the last second. Grand Rapids, Detroit, Lansing and Flint are the big blue areas, and I hear turnout is lower than expected. We haven’t gone Republican in 28 years, and I’m terrified. I’m disabled, and will suffer in a red-led government.

I’m in Wisconsin and voted early. Over 800,000 people voted early and absentee, at least 25 to 30 percent of the projected turnout. I don’t think those votes have been counted yet, so I’m not giving up on Wisconsin going for her.

Have been a long time reader, but I never post. Canadians who have been here 15 years and became citizens 3 years ago. Proudly voted in the US for the first time for Hilary. We have joked about our “exit plan”. Now feeling numb. We won’t leave though…we will stay and campaign for what we believe is right for the US. We live in NYC, and will be fine, but I do fear for all the groups who will suffer greatly with a Trump administration.
I’m kind of at the point where I think this country got what it deserved. If people don’t show up to vote in their interests, or actively vote against themselves, they have no one to blame when their lives turn to total shit.

My boss moved from Mtl to LA a few months ago. He’s taking an unpaid leave for the next year from his current position so that we can continue our activities here until everyone is done and *should* close our office here next year. When we talked about his moving, I used to sayl/joke that he should wait until Nov 8 to make his decision. Ok, i’m feeling like shit, but she does have a chance. She HAS to win Michigan and Wisconsin. Only 1/2 the vote is in in Michigan and he’s only up 30,000 – that’s doable. Wisconsin is about 60% in and he’s up by 60,000 – that’s going to be difficult but it can happen.
I think it’s too much of a long shot at this point….this is the.worst. 🙁
Wisconsin had very good early voting numbers, around 800,000. I live in Madison and voted early. Those and the absentee ballots are usually the last counted, so they could give her the win. We’re still stuck with Our Dumb Senator Ron Johnson for another 6 years. On the other hand, that frees up Russ Feingold to challenge Scott Walker for governor in two years.

Yes, she is a woman and has accomplished some amazing feats but she IS also as “establishment” as it gets to Republicans- so much so that Hillary being a woman didn’t matter in the vote.

Agree with Jess. A very similar thing drove many people to vote for Trump (or abstain completely out of an ethical stance) which motivated many of us Bernie fans: disillusionment at a broken oligarchy. If given any real alternative offering change, people could have been swayed. Just my two.

Judging by the people that I know who voted 3rd party, Trump would have won this thing much earlier if there wasn’t a Gary Johnson. Everyone I know that voted for him (Pennsylvania) voted because they don’t like Clinton or Trump. None of them would vote for Clinton in any way.
I hear you although my experience is the opposite. The people I knew who were leaning third party would never vote for Trump and were on the fence between Clinton and Johnson or Stein.

Long time lurker here. This is a serious wakeup call for America. Although I am embarrassed that we will very likely have Trump as president, I have witnessed way too much namecalling of Trump supporters, and we need to start listening to them. I don’t think most Trump supporters are voting for racism or xenophobia. So what are their voting priorities? I live in a metro area, and for me, this has definitely been a wakeup call to understand what rural America cares about.
Listening to some of the commentators they are suggesting that these results show that the anger and resentment coming from those who’ve lost jobs due to trade agreements, religious folk who feel that their rights are being taken away and the general discontentment with the status quo were grossly underestimated by the Dems as well as mainstream media. I suspect the discontentment is rooted mainly in economy and the fact that many are not prospering as they did back in the 90’s and decided to take a chance on an outsider.
I think the next four years is going to be a sh!t show in which he will basically wipe out what Obama has done and we’ll be driven into a recession for the foreseeable future and very likely, war with Russia.

This is the worst and most demoralizing night of my life. I’ve been a political activist and an active feminist since I was 18. I’ve marched, picketed, protested, petitioned, and boycotted. I’ve never once failed to vote, even when I was sick or on the verge of giving birth. Tonight I see that it was all for nothing. I am, for the first time in my life, ashamed to be an American. Mortified and ashamed. And completely let down as a woman and as a person who has a mixed-race family, because this election was a referendum on justice, equality, equal rights, human rights. And America’s humanity was found wanting. Greed, venality, xenophobia, racism, and bigotry won. America has failed itself and everything it fought for in all the years that it was a beacon of hope in the world. That’s all I have to say.

Congrats, American majority. And shame on you. i am so monumentally ashamed of my country. i am stunned. i am numb. i am in tears. the entire planet is doomed. literally.
As a Black Canadian woman currently going to University, I wanted to say that I am not surprised by the results or shocked. I expected it. I don’t know how to explain it but as a minority sometimes you just have a sense about these things and people said I was being pessimistic but really I was being a realist.
The reason why Canada is not some mecca for American’s to escape to is because I have been gradually noticing the spreading of the same amount of hatred spreading on my campus. The amount of racist graffiti about Muslims has skyrocketed on my campus. The administration ignores these hateful attacks. I witness the unfair and racist treatment of Aboriginal students just trying to get an education in a system stacked against them happens on the daily. They say the washrooms are gendered inclusive, but the amount of homophobia, transphobia and sexism many of my LGBTQ friends face is again not surprising. I get people acting all conflicted about whether to call me black or not but do not hesitate to call me the n-word when they don’t think I am listening. And some people even walk around on my Canadian university campus wearing ‘make America great again’. All these things had been building up gradually and so it seemed that political correctness was exposed for the false generosity that it truly is. It is all surface level for so many people, an alibi for any questions they may get about their attitudes for others different to them.
So lets not for a second think Trump is an American problem. He is a symptom of ‘white anger’ and white supremacist capitalistic patriarchy (as bell hooks puts it). This is not an American problem, it is a ‘white attitude’ (not limited to whites alone as all races can have it) that has to do with a system where there is a hierarchy of races where white sits on the top that is due to a history of colonialism that all countries must accept their legacy of partaking in. People do not want to give up their power but as a minority I am tired of always having to be the one to bridge to the white collective memory, to prove that I am equal and not scary and worthy of humanity and respect. I think all oppressed peoples are tired of having to convince the oppressors of our right to exist.
I do not think it is far to explain it away or think it can be solved by moving to Canada. I am Canadian (a minority black woman) and I see the same attitudes in Canada and always have. We are not some special snowflake country and America is not some horrible evil country. The only thing that has changed is the acceptability of these attitudes and isms as ‘free speech’ and ‘speaking one’s mind’.

We elected Tony Abbot as our prime minister even after he said misogynistic things about our first female prime minister, drastically cut funding for Aboriginal people and admitted he wouldn’t do anything for the LGBT population. After the Lindt Cafe terrorist attack Muslims were so abused that concerned people took to social media to offer to drive them to work or ride with them on public transport because there was real fear someone would be hurt. People here despise refugees, who would never make the life-threatening journey here by sea on overcrowded boats if they weren’t truly desperate. They want to send them home and voted for a PM whose solution to boat people was to burn the second hand fishing boats in Indonesia – the only kind of boat the people who work in the fishing industry there can afford. Those who seek asylum are housed in detention centers with such deplorable conditions that inmates have committed suicide in protest over them. Pauline Hanson, whose entire platform is ‘one nation’ – as in one, white nation – was actually re-elected after years of being ostracised from politics for her xenophobia. So much for ‘for those who’ve come across the seas/ we’ve boundless plains to share’.
We are no safe haven. When the US trends towards conservatism, so does the rest of the world. Americans seem ignorant to the power they have over the rest of the world and how by voting in a misogynist xenophobe they’re sending the message that they condone those things.
This is sickening.
The third party voters did not cause this–Trump supporters voted him in. The pendulum cannot stay on one side forever, life is a balancing act. Bernie really had a better chance and people were too blind to see it. I’m proud that I voted Trump.

I’ve been up all night watching coverage, and I’m still in a state of shock. I really didn’t see this coming. WTF, America?
Can’t sleep. Beyond angry. Disgusted. Hope I find the strength and resolve to continue caring about my country. Or anything really. This vote shows how truly selfish we are as a nation. I think I’m going to be much less compassionate in coming days. This really is the end. It’s not a joke, the once oh-so-hilarious sideshow campaign. Our country will never be the same. The Supreme Court is screwed. So many things that we worked so hard far, for years and years, down the drain.
This country is much sicker than I ever imagined. I felt as a feminist, we were actually making so many strides. I feel like I’ve been lied to for years, and I was dumb enough to believe it. Truly want this whole place to burn down. I just don’t care.

Heartbroken. There are no words. He barely won and will destroy all progress we’ve made. Here’s hoping Obama will at least get Garland on the Supreme Court in the next few weeks.
