Election Day Open Post: Hosted by Pres. Obama’s ‘third term’

FFN_Obama_Barack_MST_FINAL_110316_52222337

Here is your Election Day Open Post and I’m really, really hoping that everything turns out okay. Like, the choice today was between the first woman to ever win a major party’s presidential nomination… or the apocalypse. The Orange Apocalypse. I’m hoping that by this time tomorrow, Donald Trump will just be universally reviled as “that racist, misogynistic, baby-fisted douchebag.” I’m hoping that all of the predictions and pollsters are right, and that Hillary is winning this thing with a decent electoral college margin.

Our open post host is none other than President Barack Obama. I love him so much and I wish he was running for his third term, because I believe he would totally win and it wouldn’t even be close. Trump kept saying throughout the election that Hillary would be Obama’s third term, like that’s a bad thing. Like that isn’t the biggest endorsement to her candidacy. We need to soak in these last months with Pres. Obama. We’re going to miss him so much.

I already admitted to crying as I stood in line, waiting for the polls to open. I honestly did think of Susan B. Anthony, the Suffragettes who worked for years to ensure women’s right to vote, and how much blood has been spilled so that I could stand there in Virginia – now a reliably blue/purple state!! – and vote for the first woman president. As it turns out, I wasn’t alone – many women have been telling their “I Voted” stories and how everyone was surprised by how emotional and uplifting it felt. CB & I will be tweeting some this evening too – my Twitter is here @KaiseratCB. CB is here @Celebitchy.

As for the electoral map – lots of experts have been weighing in on Election Day, but I’m going with Larry Sabato’s more conservative map. I’ll be fine if HRC walks away with 300-plus electoral votes.

Here’s Nate Silver’s map.

1st person to vote in my district today and there were about 50 people behind me by the time the polls opened. I wish I’d worn white but I rolled out of bed and put on whatever wasn’t too wrinkled.

    • Melly says:

You voted, that’s far more important than the outfit!

    • JudyK says:

I got up at 4:30 a.m. to ensure I was first in line. I wasn’t first; I was third, but I got in early and got my vote in for Hillary and then I came home and celebrated with Bloody Mary’s. No, I’m not driving…I am in for the day–and night, hopefully celebrating our first woman President.

Oh, how I will miss our gorgeous, articulate, smooth, smart President. I can’t even imagine a United States w/ The Orange One as Commander-in-Chief.

I’m trying hard to believe in Nate Silver’s and Sam Wang’s predictions and will be glued to CNN and MSNBC for the rest of the day.

    • EM says:

I can definitely use some comfort about now. Voted at around 8:30 (NJ) record turnout according to everyone – workers and other voters. Two machines were down at the start and 1 stayed broken the entire time (unacceptable really). A lot of Trump voters 🙁 Reports from our neighboring town was record turnout too with lots of people wearing Trump hats & tshirts. Come on cities balance us out.

      • Rachel says:

I hope those people were made to remove their hats and cover up their shirts or turn them inside out. My sister wore a Hillary button to vote in SD. She was told to remove it by poll workers. She was mad until I explained to her any and all campaign and campaign materials are banned within 100 feet of an entrance to a polling place.

      • Laurie says:

EM-where in NJ? I’m in Warren County and driving to the polls and all around my neighborhood I’m inundated with signs for The Orange One Who Shall Not Be Named. It’s really depressing. I’ve broken off doing business for good with a lot of local businesses who have the T/P sign up. I’m just hoping for the rest of NJ to pull us through for Hillary. (and the country for that matter!!) Stress!!!

      • EM says:

Warren county too (H’town), you? It is crazy over here – one pickup truck added the lawn sign to his doors. Another wrote Trump on the glass.

Early exit polls have 40% of College Grads voting for Trump – WTH are they teaching these kids? Obviously nothing about experience, substance and temperament.

      • Hazel says:

No machines in Hawaii! I kid you not; we filled in rectangles with blue or black ink, then fed our two-page ballot into a ballot box that could read barcodes. Whatever works!

      • WeAreAllMadeOfStars says:

@Hazel We do that in many counties in Florida. So long as the bar codes read victory… 😉

    • Tiffany :) says:

I vote in my “pantsuit” today! It felt great, and I got teary as usual.

      • Lambda says:

I wore a pantsuit, too. I only have one, and too bad it’s not a flamboyant color, it’s a drab olive. Eh. Husband wore a snow white shirt.

      • Tiffany :) says:

I wish mine was something vivid, but it was boring black. 😉

  2. Sixer says:

Good luck, Americans. I’m crossing everything for you.

    • Bonzo says:

Thankin’ ya kindly, dear. I’m hopeful that we’ll be seeing the end of the guy in orange this week. Decency FTW!

ETA: I’ve been hooked on “The Missing”. It’s reminds me a bit of Marcella with too much going on at times, but still anxiously awaiting the next episode.

Oh, and we just got “Chewing Gum” on Netflix. 🙂

      • Sixer says:

Some things are still ok in Britland! I’ve missed you, darling!

      • Bonzo says:

        You too, my lovely! *muah*

Remember that scene at the end of Happy Valley s.2 when Catherine throws up her hands and says “What a shit week!!”? That was last week for me. Broken water heaters, minor flooding, Strep throat and tough conversations with fundies I knew growing up. I couldn’t wait to hit the reset button and get back to work yesterday!

Our packie up the street is offering 15% off “celebrate victory” champagne or 15% off “drown in your sorrows” spirits today. I may need to stop by after picking up the kiddos at school. One of each, perhaps!

    • Melly says:

Thanks Sixer! This is not a political election, this is a referendum on decency. Let’s all have the audacity of hope.

      • Esmom says:

        Amen, Melly.

I don’t drink or I might be kinda tipsy by now. I just managed to inhale nearly an entire pizza since I was too nervous to eat all day. Feeling cautiously optimistic.

      • Arpeggi says:

If it’s a referendum on decency, then decency’s side seems to have lost

    • Lynnie says:

      Thank you Sixer!

    • Rina says:

      Thank you, sixer.

I suppose we will have a clearer picture of the results around 11pm EST. I pray that Hillary wins!

    • Alix says:

Thanks, Sixer. I’m so anxious I could throw up.

Am I going to work tomorrow or calling in sick for the next four years? I’m not watching any of the election coverage tonight, I’ll find out in the morning when I slowly, tentatively open my laptop.

      • Trashaddict says:

Absolutely nausea has been the theme for the day. Especially when every report begins with “Trump” this and “Trump” that. As the microinsults continue.
“If Trump wins this state” vs. “If Hillary loses that state”. Indefinite, passive language when referring to the female candidate, decisive language about the Cheetoh even when it’s things he’s lying through his teeth about. It’s been a real lesson on the persistence of isms in this country.

  3. Tiffany27 says:

This would make Trump the first presidential candidate to win Ohio and lose the election. Seethe Orange Satan. I’m with Her!!

  4. Melly says:

    FIRED UP! READY TO GO!

  5. Pip says:

If I’m feeling this tense in the (bloody freezing) UK, then god knows how you’re all coping in the US. May your god/drink/drugs of choice get you through the night …

I’m keeping everything crossed that, in a few hours, I won’t be feeling that same sickening sinking feeling I had listening to the radio on Brexit night.

    COME ON HILLARY.

Really am feeling a bit sick. 2016 has been a shocker of a year so far, both personally & politically, so I wouldn’t bet against the orange apocalypse.

    • Nene's Wig says:

As an American #withher, my anxiety and blood pressure is through the ROOF today!!

I’m trying to stay off of Facebook because it seems like all the Cheeto flavored nuts are out in full force, and I’m trying not to rage all over them.

And I’ve got my bottle(s) of wine ready for the results tonight!! Fingers crossed, all!!

      • Janet R says:

Thank you Sixer! I just voted after work today and although my state is always blue, I’m in a very red part of it. Those Trump yard signs freak me out!
@Nene’s Wig, I have to stay off FB too. I can’t believe how many idiots I am acquainted with/related to!

    • lozface says:

I know the feeling. I am here in Australia, glued to my TV. Luckily it’s only 10.30am here, so I doubt I will be moving all day. I felt the same with Brexit. These decisions impact the whole world, especially a small country like us in Aus. Our stock market, has been very reflective of the changes in the polls. It’s very scary.

I am still in shock that it’s this close… but I can assure you my fingers, toes, legs are well and truly crossed for Hillary.

I feel so emotional, it’s a very bizarre feeling.

C’mon Hillary!!!! The world needs this. Let’s do it US friends!!!!!

  6. me says:

This election has been the best reality show America has ever put out. We just need a happy ending now.

    • Christin says:

This is like watching the high school bully (now 70) who coasted through life, creating chaos for others, (hopefully) finally discover he’s toast. Like the character Biff from Back to the Future.

I hope his ghostwriter’s prediction is correct, and this Orange Biff does not only lose (bigly), but be a Manhattan social pariah who spends years trying to fix damage to the family brand.

      • Ally8 says:

Truly, this. Along with everything else, I’m so frustrated that millions of people would volunteer to enable this trust fund baby’s destructive narcissism. Such a bad example for other people in powerful positions that they can wreck countless things around them as long as it makes them feel good individually.

      • Christin says:

I have rarely ever wished I had a child as much as these past few months. So many life and character lessons can be taught from this campaign.

  7. Sweden says:

America, Sweden is f*cking holding their breaths now. VOTE FOR HILLARY!!! If Trump becomes the president, not only the US will be unsafe, but so will the entire planet. Every-single-one I know here in the north just thinks it’s INSANE how ANYONE can vote for that sexist, racist IDIOT. And we’re scared as hell. Even our news channels and politicians. We’re sending you our love.

    • jwoolman says:

What’s really bizarre is how many people when asked say they think Trump will make an awful President (one guy even doubted Donald could read) but they say they’re voting for him anyway because he’s a Republican …. If the Democrats nominated a Donald Trump, I’d never vote for him. How could anybody stick to a party label when they know they’re voting for a dangerous fool?

    • lozface says:

We are feeling the same here in Australia. This really is a vote that impacts the entire world.

      I feel sick with stress!

    • Alix says:

Thank you, Sweden! We need all the good wishes we can get.

  8. Neo says:

I hope the forces of good win this day. Canada’s #withher. Thank you to all Americans voting for Hillary Clinton today. You do so on behalf of women worldwide. We’ll be glued to our monitors.

    With hope and in solidarity,
    NL

    • Lacia Can says:

I’m stressed here in western Canada! I’m quietly confident HRC will win the WH, though disappointed it appears to be a close race. Good luck all and here’s hoping there’s no violence/intimidation.

Any idea when we’ll start seeing results from FL? I can’t bear to watch the coverage yet. Too nerve wracking.

    • lozface says:

      Ditto from Australia!
      #ImWithHer all the bloody way!

  9. Giddy says:

I ran to the store in my “Nasty Women Vote” t-shirt and there was almost a holiday atmosphere. Then on my way home I saw a wonderful thing! A house had a display of red, white and blue balloon letters about eight feet tall spelling out VOTE. It was so great. Then another house had a great scene: a Trump piñata was on the ground covered in fake blood while a Hillary piñata stood over him with a machete. It was all circled with crime tape! Celebrate!

  10. NorthernGirl_20 says:

Good luck today..I really hope that things go well and the right person/woman gets in

  11. Jade says:

I am living for the Facebook group Pantsuit Nation today. Absolutely amazing – 2.5 million people posting their stories and photos and sharing why they are #WithHer!

    • AJ says:

Yes! One of my friends added me and it’s so inspiring. I love it. I wish I found it months ago. I have been in a perpetual state of nausea.

    • Insomniac says:

I just found that last night. Wish I had seen it much earlier, because I was so damn sick of hearing about how nobody likes Hillary.

I don’t own any white clothing, but I put on an approximation of a pantsuit and voted for Hillary. The place wasn’t busy at all (which I found disappointing).

    • NOLA says:

@jade, I’m in the Pantsuit group. Did you see the message from HRC that was posted in there about an hour ago??? Instant tears. God, I hope she wins. I live in Louisiana (red state). I am hoping like hell that the blue states win out.

    • Juls says:

Pantsuit Nation has been my happy place and safe zone for the past couple of weeks. So happy some of my fellow celebitches are in there!

    • Esmom says:

Yes, a friend added me last week and reading it pulled me back off the ledge this weekend when I really started to freak out about a possible Trump win. So many inspiring stories. I voted a couple weeks ago or I would have worn a pantsuit today.

  12. minx says:

    Love POTUS!

  13. Clare says:

For the first time in my adult life I am thankful that I won’t wake up in America tomorrow. I’m born and raised in the south and sadly this America doesn’t feel like the America I grew up in – hoping this election proves me wrong.

    #withher

  14. Saks says:

Good luck USA! I hope my people show through their vote how important the Latino community is. I’m sending you all the best wishes from Mexico (your election is so important to my country that our currency has been fluctuating like crazy last couple weeks).

¡Venga latinos, lleven a Hillary a la Casa Blanca!

    • Melly says:

I’m almost positive that the latino community is going to save the Republic in this election. Gracias amigos!!!!!

      • Size Does Matter says:

I’m so hopeful that women and Latinos will GOTV and Texas will go blue! What a message that would send!

      • Kate says:

I agree! Muchas gracias a nuestros amigos!

      • QQ says:

De Nada Ya’ll *tips hat* ( Lord knows me and ma Wrangled all 20 of what Mami calls ” You Know, Nosotros” to register to vote, and to vote down ballot, I was in charge of the younger set, she too the older aunts/cousins the New York people)

      • Kath says:

I think Latinos (plus black folks and women) are going to save the whole world!

As soon as I heard that Latinos were registering to vote in unprecedented numbers – voting early, and some for the first time – I did a little happy dance.

Eff you Trump! That’s what happens when you insult a massive voting bloc.

I also really, really hope that black voters turn up for Hillary, even though there is a bit of enthusiasm defecit for her compared to Obama. Support for Trump is between 0-4% for African American voters, which is awesome. I just hope the voter turnout is high.

    • Marie says:

This Latina voted for Hilary!! And, so did my 72-year old father who has only voted Republican since the 70s! Latinos for Hilary!

  15. Pandy says:

Good luck to you America!!! Please please please may we never hear the words Donald Trump after tomorrow (when it’s pointed out he’s a loser).

  16. Relli says:

I voted two weeks ago thinking it would help my anxiety about today and yet it hasn’t. It flared this morning early when I got stuck in the elevator with the one co-worker you avoid at the holiday party because she tends to get wasted and has to be taken care of. She immediately starts in on how she can’t until today is over and I politely nod in agreement. Then she says I just hope whoever gets it doesn’t screw it to much more than the country is already messed up and I just let that statement hang in silence because seriously lady… I just can’t with people who feel like that, we have come a long way in eight years.

    • Christin says:

People have short attention spans, but how can any adult forget the state of the economy left to BO in 2008.

  17. vava says:

I get teary eyed just thinking about the Obamas leaving the White House. But, when Hillary is elected, it will be another milestone for this country. She’ll do a great job, she’s got the background and experience. The Trump supporters aren’t going to make anything easy for her though, and their hatred knows no bounds. These next four years will be challenging.

    • Lorelai says:

Vava, same. I moved into the grieving stage a few days ago, as soon as it became apparent that HRC would get it.

I will miss him and the entire Obama family so, so much. Class personified.

      • SusanneToo says:

Totally shallow, but I was an infant when FDR died, so I’ve seen a lot of First Families. The Obamas, all of them, are the most beautiful occupants of the WH in my lifetime. Both inner and outer beauty.

      • Abbess Tansy says:

No that’s not shallow at all. I think it’s amazing you’ve seen many first families.

      • Lady D says:

The Obama’s are truly the best. Grace, class, compassion brains, they embody all four.

  18. susanne says:

I am only a half hour away from Susan B Anthony’s grave. Hoping to get there tonight.

    • Twodollars says:

I wish Alice Paul was getting the attention Susan B Anthony is today. Anthony is a lot like Hillary in that she took credit for other people’s work. Paul was instrumental in getting suffrage over the finish line and Anthony repaid her by making sure she was excluded from the bill signing.

      • susanne says:

You are most likely better informed than I. This whole region, including seneca falls, is at least a symbol of the movement. SBA is of course not responsible for the vote for women.
I hear you, but I’m grateful there are places people are gathering to celebrate this time in history. If I get there, I know it will be a moment I will never forget.

      • Lightpurple says:

While Alice and all those who fought so hard and suffered so much, and Alice suffered, for this day deserve recognition on this day, Alice died in 1977 and got to vote many times. Susan died in 1906 and never got to vote.

  19. lucy2 says:

Nate Silver has her back over 71% now, and another predictor I saw said 91% chance for HRC. Less than 12 hours to go!

Remember all those who fought and were jailed and DIED for our right to vote, those who stood up for civil rights, for women’s rights, for equality for all. It’s been less than 100 years since the 19th amendment, and just over 50 years for the Voting Rights Act.
Don’t sit it out. Don’t take for granted that your state will go a certain way. Don’t think your vote doesn’t count.

  20. OTHER RENEE says:

My mother in law voted early even though she knew she only had a few days left to live. I get choked up thinking about it. The family brought her in a wheelchair and as you can imagine it was not easy. If this amazing lady can do it, we can all vote! Every vote matters. Nasty Women Vote! (I saw a photo of another elderly lady who also voted right before she passed away. These ladies are simply inspiring.)

    • mia girl says:

How emotional. Your mother-in-law sounds like an amazing women. I am crying.
Hugs to you and your family.

      • OTHER RENEE says:

Thank you Mia. We thought she had more time but there were sudden and unexpected complications. And this was her last wish, to vote and make her voice heard. Thank heavens she lived in a state that had places for early voting. Yes, I’m beyond inspired by this wonderful lady.

    • Surferrosa says:

      Bless her!

    • vava says:

      What an inspiring story.

    • SaraR, says:

So inspiring. Best to you and your family.

I voted last week, so today trying to go through the day and eagerly waiting for the results. Looking forward to that big sigh of relief.

      #withher

    • Pam says:

How amazing! I am sorry for the pain your family is experiencing.

    • cynic says:

I’m sorry for your loss. Your MIL is an inspiration.

    • SusanneToo says:

      Thank you for sharing that.

    • Trashaddict says:

OK Renee you are making me lose it. Choke right up and cry those tears. God love you and yours.

  21. mia girl says:

I am in Miami-Dade County and have been mobilizing (and now praying) to put Florida in the WIN column for Hilary.

This is a 50/50 county. People I know, love and respect are voting for Trump and I just cant understand it.

Sometimes I feel like this election has been the equivalent of the internet’s
Blue&Black vs White&Gold dress thing that people lost their minds over last year. Voters are all looking at the same candidates and seeing very different things!

  22. PinataProtest says:

I’ve teared up too many times to count reading all the voting stories and seeing the pantsuit nation pictures. I’m so excited, anxious, nervous. From this Nasty woman in Texas, Let’s make history!!! #withher #maketexasblue #illbehappywithpurple

    • Snazzy says:

Yes, I came here to talk about that page!! I’m not even American but so invested in this election. How can I not be? That page really restored my faith 🙂

      • PinataProtest says:

Snazzy, that page has given me life the last few days!!! Is it to early to start drinking?! I don’t know how I’m gonna make it through the rest of the day.

    • lozface says:

Me too and I am Australian! As a woman of the world, this decision is so important for us and for every other group that is marginalised in our society.

I am so emotional and anxious – it’s a bizarre feeling. Trying to work, whilst watching the coverage. I am not getting much done.

  23. Lynnie says:

Just voted for the first time and I’m feeling pumped!

Also PSA: Krispy Kreme is giving out a free donut today if you show them your “I Voted” sticker!

    • mia girl says:

      Congratulations!

    • Melly says:

Yay! My first presidential election was in 2008 and it was an amazing experience.

    • Abbess Tansy says:

Awesomeness! I remember when I first voted, it was for Bill Clinton. My parents took me to our precinct. They were so proud. They are both deceased now but I look back on that moment with gratitude.

  24. Swak says:

Popped up on my FB, that a woman in labor stopped and voted! Voted early this morning myself.

  25. Veronica says:

Nervous today. But also saddened by how many of my coworkers are disenfranchised by this election. I pled with them to vote – even if you don’t choose a major party president, at least vote for the sake of the legislative bodies. Your local and state governments affect you just as significantly as your federal.

  26. Jenns says:

Is anyone else not getting a thing done today? There is just too much Internet! I have my Twitter account open and keep checking the updates. My favorite if Trump getting booed at the polls.

    And this:

    https://twitter.com/Gabbienain/status/796031055715246080

    • Melly says:

I don’t know why election day isn’t a national holiday. I’m getting nothing done. I’m an emotional nasty woman today.

      • Snazzy says:

LoL I’m not even American and I’m not getting anything done today. And I’ve already stress-eaten a whole bag of m&ms 😛

      • Tiffany :) says:

I am being so unproductive. I am trying to make myself focus, but it is really, really hard! This is going to be a VERY long day!

      • Veronica says:

Why would we make it a national holiday when we can undermine the voting rights of the working and poverty classes by forcing them to choose between income or votes? [/cynical]

In all seriousness, I avoid most social media sites on election days. I’m working all day, though, so I gave the benefit of that distraction.

    • Trashaddict says:

Two goals before the next election: National (Paid?!) Holiday for Election Day, and
dissolving the Electoral College in favor of the Popular Vote.

  27. Susannah says:

I’d like any victory for Hillary but I’d love and overwhelming one. I’m sure Trump and his supporters will still say it’s rigged but I’d love a huge statement win. The fact that Utah is in the leaning Republican and not solidly Republican is a good sign as is Arizona not being a sure thing.

  28. BengalCat2000 says:

I voted with my mom. We waited two hours and by the time we got our ballots I was ready to burst into tears. I’m so glad I was able to share that moment with the best mom in the world!
I do have vodka for later tho.

  29. Grey says:

As a Canadian woman, watching this election and learning about the US system has been alternately really interesting and the cause of anxiety. I just wanted to say thanks for all the coverage you have had and thank you to everyone who comments and shares knowledge. I have learned I would be a firm democrat, haha, and I will be following along here and on your twitter feeds. From your neighbour up north, #imwithher (that felt so good to say).

  30. nicegirl says:

    WHO RUN THE WORLD??? GIRLS~~

  31. Lumo says:

This will be my first comment here (long time reader). I’m an immigrant in the US. I’ve lived here for 6 years and my daughter was born here (I’m not yet a citizen). I’m so emotional today. I want my American daughter to see a woman elected president and that goodness can win!

  32. Elizabeth says:

I wonder whose going to win? I think I’ll be up all night to find out. However, I don’t believe who ever wins will make a big difference in the lives of the people. I remember when the black community was so excited about Barack Obama, but they are very disappointed that he didn’t do enough for them.

    • pinetree13 says:

I have a lot of cynical thoughts like that too. I mean I’m hopeful, but I’m also skeptical about how much change one president could even do at this point. I have to fight the pessimism but wanted you to know I have thoughts like these as well.

    • jwoolman says:

Hate to burst bubbles, but Trump will definitely make a huge negative difference into people’s lives. First he really is capable of starting WWIII all by his little self, as well as starting a multitude of other wars and warlets. He also will try to dismantle ACA, bringing us back to the time when we could be denied coverage for pre-existing conditions and one injury or serious illness would use up our meager lifetime limit for coverage, and many of us would not be able to afford insurance at all (I had to quit once premiums reached 53% of my income). He will terrorize immigrants and refugees and inspire more violence against them – just his candidacy has hurt schoolchildren who are being bullied in his name. I could go on, but you get the point.

The fact is that it really does matter who is in the White House. Charming Ronald Reagan promised to dismantle government programs, and he did. He trashed the college work-study program that had been so helpful to both students and the institutions. He cut back on environmental and safety regulations. Leaks at nuclear power plants were dealt with by simply changing the environmental contamination thresholds. He appointed people who trashed conservation programs (pre-millennialists who were expecting the Second Coming in their lifetime, so why conserve and preserve?). Safety inspector cutbacks for railroads and aircraft were serious enough that I had no desire to use such transportation – the planes were getting older…. He broke the air traffic controller strike and put on new people who within a few years were making the same complaints as the original strikers, most of them safety-related. He waged illegal wars which had a devastating effect on people in the regions affected. He cut back on programs helping poor children and their families, and charities couldn’t make up the difference. One soup kitchen in DC was aimed entirely at school age children who were hungry, they charged them a penny for good food (figuring they could find pennies on the street and would feel better about it if they “paid”). Signs of protein deficiency disease (kwashiorkor) were seen in Chicago in children whose families had lost benefits.

I took my aunt to get the small Social Security death benefit ($255) when her husband died and made a snarky remark about how puny it was. She told me that amount when the program started could make a difference between a family staying together or not. In the old days, at best kids were farmed out to relatives – she and my mom had lived in fear of that happening to them when their mother died and their dad lost his job and savings in the Great Depression. Their older cousins had lived with them for a while for that reason, so they knew that could happen. They were afraid that they would be separated from each other and from their dad. A friend said food stamps really saved her family when her dad was unemployed for an extended period. There used to be stories about senior citizens reduced to eating cheap dog food. Social Security and Medicare have made a considerable difference to so many people. But these were all programs that at one time were vigorously opposed by many Republicans. If they were in total power, none of those programs would have started.

Imagine if George Bush hadn’t gone to the Supreme Court to stop the Florida recount when Al Gore, who won the popular vote in 2000, had called for a recount that undoubtedly would have given him Florida’s electoral votes and the Presidency. No Gulf War, no invasion and occupation of Iraq, no pointless war in Afghanistan to destroy so many lives (including huge numbers of civilians) and drain our economy. Probably no 9/11, since Gore would have been unlikely to ignore Intelligence warnings as Bush did.

So don’t ever think that all politicians are the same, that it doesn’t matter who is in the White House. It really does. Some are better than others in many different ways. Some do a considerable amount of harm when given the chance.

      • Cam says:

“Imagine if George Bush hadn’t gone to the Supreme Court to stop the Florida recount when Al Gore, who won the popular vote in 2000, had called for a recount that undoubtedly would have given him Florida’s electoral votes and the Presidency.”

There have been multiple independent newspaper recounts of Florida post-election that showed Bush would’ve won regardless.

Also, the notion that someone in office other than Bush would’ve left Al Qaeda in Afghanistan to set up shop after 9/11 is absurd.

    • Trashaddict says:

Elizabeth – you have to start somewhere. Obama is a person, he can’t be a savior to everyone. But he started the ball rolling. I think Chris Rock said he wanted to “be able to fail like a white man” , where white men can fail (Trump bankruptcy, anyone) and be given the chance to try their luck again and again. That’s the barrier we need to break. Hillary can get the ball rolling. Our daughters and granddaughters will take it from there.

    I like to think it’s a sign.

On tenterhooks here for you all. For us all.

  37. Twodollars says:

Please stop trying to desperately clinging to Obama to prop up Hillary. Hillary isn’t even half the politician or person Obama is. She’s corrupt, lying, incompetent and has poor judgement. America and the world are going to lose an amazing leader when Obama has to step down. I am heartbroken we are left with this jackass of a replacement.

    • Melly says:

It’s your right to not support Hillary. You can make the argument that’s she’s corrupt and lies – she lies 25% of the time, Trump lies 75% of the time. However, you can not argue that she’s incompetent. By definition that means she lacks the necessary skills to perform the job. She is the most qualified person in any of our lifetimes to run for the presidency. She knows what the job requires and she has loads of experience working with and/or around 3 different presidents. You can disagree with her policies, but you should respect her for her qualifications.

    • Guesto says:

It’s amazing to me that any sane, intelligent person can, at this 11th hour late stage, still persist in seeing Clinton as the ‘jackass’.

I feel bad for you and hope you regain some proper perspective once the orange nightmare is over.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I agree that Obama is an amazing President and deserves tons of respect. But I don’t think Hillary is what you claim she is. If she was incompetent, she wouldn’t be the odds favorite to be President. You can’t say she isn’t getting shit done when she is actively, right now, getting shit done.

    • notasugarhere says:

MSNBC’s coverage was interesting last night. Quoting what Republican lawmakers (and Trump) said about Hillary Clinton before she ran for president. Competent, hard-working, dedicated, crossing the aisle and getting things done, etc.

It is only when she got too successful-for-comfort that suddenly they had a problem with her.

I got my seat upgrade request for my flight – first time that has EVER happened. Imm taking it as a good sign.

I’m going to miss him so much. I’m literally tearing up looking at the pic you posted. He really is a special leader. So smart but also so thoughtful and insightful. Amazing man. I don’t think we’ll have another leader like Barack Obama for a long time if ever.

Having said that I honestly feel Hillary will surprise people and end up being a much better President than expected. She won’t be transformational or inspiring like President Obama or as charismatic as Bill. But she’s damn smart, works her ass off, resilient as hell, extremely pragmatic and able to work side by side with people who have frankly treated her and her family like crap. (Regarding the latter, lots of GOP Senators liked her.) She’s been ridiculously vilified by the GOP that they’ve set the bar super low.

  44. Larelyn says:

Mail in ballot here in Kansas. While my state will go red, I certainly placed my vote blue up and down the ticket. I think we will get her there, together!

  45. Carmen says:

Voted early. Proud to vote for Hillary. News reports Trump got booed at his own polling station.

  46. Bluesky says:

I got emotional too after voting. All I could think of was my father. He grew up in the segregated south, a time when the Klan rode on horseback. He got involved in the civil rights movement when he was in college. He told me about the time he got arrested in Georgia in the 60s for eating at a white restaurant. When I got accepted to the local university, I remember how proud he was because he remembers when blacks weren’t allowed to attend there. I’m glad he lived long enough to see the first black president, something he thought he would never see. I vote because he fought for the right for his children to have that privilege.

  48. Chinoiserie says:

I kind of think it is naive to think that if Trump looses his supporters are not there anymore. I get that it would be a relief to think that way but just because the media would part to ignore him the reasons why he got popular are still there and you should not just go back to a bubble and ignore then for the next 4 years.

In a more fun note I saw a election cookie on Twitter where someone is going to color a US cookie with the colors.

  49. Keaton says:

I don’t mean to be depressing or negative but this really concerns me:
    http://www.cnn.com/2016/11/08/politics/nevada-voting-lawsuit-donald-trump/
Trump is going to lose. I feel pretty certain about that. But he and his ilk are going to drag this out and do everything in their power to try to de-legitimize Hillary’s Presidency. I’m completely sickened by these people at this point.

    • notasugarhere says:

Made me sick as well. People are turning out to vote, but if they don’t vote for him, he’ll challenge every single vote.

It reads like they might be trying to get the names of the volunteers and possibly the voters. Knowing the Drumpf group, they’d release the names and addresses “accidentally”.

    • Christin says:

There were live feeds from Clark County that showed the long lines waiting to vote on that last evening of early voting. The news reporters said that it was a three-hour wait, so if they had a line at 7, it stands to reason they stayed open until 10, so the last person in line at 7 could cast a ballot. That footage clearly shows what happened, and it followed precinct policy.

This is just a frivolous legal move that will hopefully be quickly dismissed. But I get what you are saying. He will never be a gracious loser.

      • Jayna says:

Never. The fact that he’s starting up with his antics, such as this during early voting,, proves it. He will sulk like the whiny Orange man-child he is when he loses to Hillary.

    • Carmen says:

Update: the suit was thrown out.

    • Hazel says:

The state of Hawaii has already made it clear that as long as people are in line at the time polls close, they will be allowed to vote. As it should be. Trump has no legal hope of invalidating those Nevada ballots or any others.

I’m always surprised by all the people in different countries that have an investment in our election. I know it shouldn’t surprise me! Both outcomes are hugely important in different ways, Totally Biased.

As someone who’s also been through cancer treatment in the past 12 months, don’t be too brave. It’ll only come back to bite you in the ass. Ask for help – demand help – cry, sulk, whatever it takes to get you through. Remember “this too shall pass”.

With my very, very best wishes for a great outcome for you. & no dawning of an orange apocalypse tomorrow 🙂

      • TotallyBiased says:

        Thank you (thanks everybody)
Your words resonate, but I don’t know that it is “being brave” so much as a certain fatalism: recovery for me is whole-heartedly desired, but whether I’m around or not life will suck at the very least if Cheeto Jeebus is somehow elected. I need to know my mother and other friends/family aren’t going to have to live in that world.

Asking for help is a hard lesson to learn, isn’t it? The first big thing I’ve learned is this: pay attention to the people who have gone there before. Like you, and like my boss who texts me every single day just to ask what’s up and if I need her. I love you all, for being kind enough to share your light–the signal fires for those of us who come after.

So you are all making me tear up here.
      Which is weird, too.
      But okay.

Sending virtual hugs your way. I hope you have lots of help because you deserve it. When my mother finished her chemo the clinic staff had a celebration for her. As she left for the last time they all gathered in the hall and as she walked past they applauded, gave her a bunch of balloons, and threw confetti. Then they gave her a little plaque that said ” Courage is being scared to death and saddling up anyway. ” John Wayne. So I think you are extremely brave. Good luck and best wishes. 🎈🎈🎈

This election has made me more thoughtful and reflective than any other presidential election in memory. I realize how much I have taken for granted. I’ve thought about my parents (who both died last year), and how they talked about the important decisions such as Medicare and Social Security that greatly helped my grandparents and future elders.

My mother never bought into nonstop slander about Hillary, and my Dad always watched Bill whenever he was being interviewed. He talked about how smart Bill was. I think another common link was because both were born in rural poverty during the 1940s, and did the best they could to improve their situation.

I was so proud to cast my early vote for HRC for many reasons. My thanks to so many of you on this site, from near and far, who have made these months more bearable.

Bill Clinton is a brilliant man.

I also have been up and down these last months. I couldn’t bear it at some points But here we are, election day, finally It’s been a long road. The anxiety will begin kicking in as the results start coming in. I’m pretty confident Hillary will win, but that confidence will fly out the window if Florida goes to Trump. I don’t want a horrible, long night. I need positivity as the results come in. I want it locked down, and God forbid, not some huge upset by Trump.

CNN just showed Hillary’s motorcade leaving her Chappaqua residence heading to downtown NYC to a hotel where she will be with her team and family watching the results. I got teary-eyed watching the aerial of that long motorcade traveling down the road. It’s been a long fight for Hillary to get to this day, and the big moment is here. History in the making..

Btw I’ve been following social media throughout the day and I’m beyond irked at members of the media calling out Taylor Swift in regards to her actions this election. 1). Since when did we decide who to vote for based on what a celebrity says? 2). It’s our right as Americans to have a private ballot. 3). Why do they automatically assume she’s a Trump supporter when everyone she associates with publicly (Karlie Kloss, Gigi, Lorde, Jack Antoff, Lena Dunham, Blake Lively, Martha Hunt etc) are all Hilary supporters? I don’t know why but it just bothered me especially when I don’t see male celebrities who have been quiet on who they’re voting for not get the same ridicule. But either way the media should take a hint based on who she’s associated herself with and leave her alone. We have a woman who is about to become president and they’re focused on who Taylor Swift is voting for.

      • Sam says:

You said it better than I could have. That’s exactly why she’s quiet on politics and I appreciate it from her. At this point I’m just dead from all the shame and ridicule Trump and his apparent fan base have brought upon our Nation.

  68. Fire rabbit says:

    For a little levity:

I came home early after voting#WithHer, with a little side trip to the wine store(without the ‘h’ my smarty hubs requested). As soon as I got in I turned on the TV to check for updates and it was still on the Weather Channel from this morning. They have a special program, until 12am EST, titled Escape the Election! It’s several hours of beautiful, bucolic scenery with a soothing jazz, new age soundtrack. Ohm! My first belly laugh of the day.
It’s going to be a long night, but here’s to an election that proves we are still a good and decent people. Peace be to all!

  69. Di says:

My grandmother became a citizen at 81 last fall and voted for the first time in the US today! She’s lives here as a resident for 25 years and the prospect of a woman president really excited her. It was really special to see how happy she was today.

  70. LiterallyaShambles says:

    Hey beloved Celebitches.

I want to extend an invitation that I also extended to all my Facebook friends, my yoga teacher training graduating class, and anyone I can possibly reach over the Internet.
I’m starting to really feel the anxiety over the fact that we are hours away from a new president, and I would love it if we could all hold some peaceful space together even if we are not physically together. For you it may be prayer, for me it’s meditation. Whatever it is, just bring what’s in your heart.

For anyone who’s interested, I’m going to sit in meditation at 7 GA time, which is in 23 minutes. Just to be in solidarity and create a calming space.
I love you guys so, so much. My heart is with you all.

    • Melly says:

<3 you too, you nasty woman!

    • SMD says:

Good to know Molly, I was panicking with the early VA poll numbers. Literally a shambles I’m with you@ where in GA? I’m in the Winder/Bethlehem area which is very red. However, when I go into Athens I see many more Hillary signs..but you know this state swings red. Hugs to you and all the rest of the amazing folks on this site, even those I disagree with who bring respect and open minds to our comments!

  71. MrsSoup says:

I made it a point of walking my 2 very small daughters down to my voting place this morning. My tired 4-year-old asked why we had to vote because “the lady already won.” (At least according to the kids vote on Nickelodeon last night). When we left, she was a bit more alert and said “We all won because we voted.” Damn straight little girl, damn straight. #withher #proudtovote

    • Melly says:

Oh my god your daughters sound freakin adorable!!!!!!

      • MrsSoup says:

Thanks @Melly! They have their moments. We talked a little more about voting after I picked them up from school…the 4-year-old told me that the lady already won because “she said all the words Mommy. All the good words.” I couldn’t really argue with that logic.

    • jwoolman says:

It’s seriously encouraging that the Nickelodeon kids vote went to Hillary. Until 2004 (with all the strange irregularities with those machines), that was a reliable indicator of the outcome. Haven’t followed it since, but here’s hoping they’re back to prime predictor status!

  72. Marcy says:

What’s scary is all the exit polls on Twitter have people voting for Trump scary! And I agree with one poster on here its freaky how many women voted for Trump the chump.

  73. Guest says:

    I must say I getting nervous – I feeling a little worried

  74. Kco says:

    Oh geez, KY and IN…

    • EM says:

I’ve been trying to stay away from news after watching some of the early voting stats but this is not good and my freaking out is about to begin. Ok just checked 2012 and KY and IN were red so no flipping involved.

    • Melly says:

No big deal. It was expected that Trump would win there. You need to watch out for Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, and Michigan. If Hillary wins those, it’s game over for Trump.

      • Kco says:

Yes, yes. I must remember this! Seeing those light up in red made things real for me. It was a gut punch I didn’t think I would actually feel.

        Deep breaths

      • Melly says:

@Kco The stress is REAL tonight! Keep your focus on those states though. If Hillary can hold Michigan and Virginia, she just needs to pick up Florida or North Carolina – but obviously winning both would be best!

She’s up by over 50,000 votes in Florida

      • Guest says:

And I think PA. If she wins Florida I think it’s over for Trump

      • EM says:

Trump is showing strong in FL though. A friend is giving me local news reports and he is winning in every county although Miami-Dade had not reported yet.

      • SusanneToo says:

Have the early votes been tabulated yet?

      • Melly says:

Pennsylvania is also another important state. She needs to hold Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. Then she just needs North Carolina or Florida. I think she’ll win Florida. I truly believe Latinos are going to save the f’ing day.

    • EM says:

Not holding out hope – I think PA & OH are getting flipped.

Please no Trumpexit here, pretty please.

      • Melly says:

In my opinion, Ohio is going for Trump, Pennsylvania will stay with Hillary

      • EM says:

Like your prediction better. Just created a spreadsheet with 2012 results and 2016 wins and key states – sad but I need to see this state by state.

      • Melly says:

Em, totally understand and love your spreadsheet creating nerd-ness! The margins look good in Florida and North Carolina, but it is early. Hillary is also currently in the lead in Ohio.

  75. Ninks says:

    I feel sick.

    • Melly says:

Everything will be ok. Hillary will pull this off. Bad bitch moms get shit done.

    • lightpurple says:

I feel sick too. Illinois and Maryland just helped me a little bit but I still feel sick. And I’m making a list of states I plan to boycott.

      • Melly says:

Stop feeling sick! She’s going to pull this off. I think she’s going to get North Carolina & Florida.

  76. Guest says:

So far only one projection for Hillary and it VT. Even Virginia is too early to call which surprise me – that’s Tim Kaine state. I’m really feeling scared

    • Melly says:

Virginia nasty woman here. She’s going to win Virginia. The votes from Northern Virginia and the Richmond area hasn’t been fully counted. Thus far, most of the rural counties are being counted and the rural areas always go republican. Virginia goes blue because of Northern VA, Richmond area, and Charlottesville area. Watch for those highly populated areas.

    • lightpurple says:

She has Illinois and Maryland and New Jersey and several New England states. Sizable chunks of electoral votes.

    • Christin says:

Don’t worry about VA. They showed the county map, and the southern ones reporting are what I call ‘red’neck regions. Wait for Arlington and larger, traditionally blue counties to report.

    • Christin says:

As James Carville just said, no surprises yet (nationally). Check back in an hour and it’ll look a lot different!

  77. SMD says:

Oh my lovelies! Kaiser thank you for opening the bar. In GA here and it had been and continues to be a crazy day here. I went on FB once today, checked a few crucial posts and then promptly left after unfriendimg 2 more people because they posted ridiculous hate posts. Sigh. I’m very worried, have seen more orange supporters the last week than I thought possible. Plus, even with a HRC win it is very, very clear how divided and disenfranchised about half the popluation remains. So much work left to be done. I’m trying to decide how to move forward, personally in terms of support and perhaps volunteering. And now I’m gonna fix a beverage my lovelies!!🍸🍾🍷

  78. Macey says:

I am genuinely scared right now, as in my hands are almost shaking. I know he was expected to win some of those states but Florida is REALLY worrying me.

I dont think Ive ever been so scared of election results before, to the point I almost want to cry. This is coming from a staunch Sanders supporter who voted for Hillary bc Trump just scares me. BTW, I am in PA and I know many who did the same. My mom didnt like either but was scared of Trump and was actually going to sit this one out but then I asked her if she really wanted to wake up Wednesday morning to hear that Trump is president, well needless to say she went out and voted HC too so I do think many in PA will vote HC just bc we see so many Trump signs and it really scares us.

  79. KiddVicious says:

    Gah! I’m opening wine.

  80. Fiorella says:

Hoping for a nasty pantsuit woman victory !
Whatever happened to gnat? Anyone know?

  81. Melly says:

Hillary in the lead in Florida AND North Carolina AND Ohio!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hillary wins Illinois, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, DC, Massachusetts, and Maryland!! Woop Woop!!! Oh and she has the electoral lead. COME ON AMERICA!!!

  82. Juls says:

My husband and I voted for Hillary in Tennessee. Our state is die hard Republican. But we still voted. Took our 2 young boys. I cried when I filled in that oval beside Hillary’d name. My youngest son asked me questions the whole time, which I patiently answered. Then he hugged me so hard. There are no words.

    • Christin says:

I did the same, and cannot wait to go to work tomorrow with a huge smile as my two Trumpy-Melania-Palin adoring female co-workers sulk. I’m hopeful!

    • Sherry says:

I early voted in TN with my 19 year old daughter. We both voted for Clinton even though I knew Trump would take the electoral votes for the state. We wanted to help her in some small way.

  83. Clumsyme says:

You guys I’m freaking out!! We walked into the house and my smarmy brother-in-law goes Trump is winning. My stomach is in knots and I feel like throwing up.😯 I pray to God she wins.

  84. Jayna says:

Hill Yeah, it’s looking like Hillary is going to take Florida.

  85. KiddVicious says:

So, if Trump wins FL Hillary can still win. If Hillary wins FL it’s over for Trump. Come on FL!!

  86. Ninks says:

So, I’ve a question. Each state’s electoral college votes are given to the winner of the popular vote in that state? Right.

  87. Ayra. says:

I’m not even surprised, I knew that it would be close(even if it’s early). I’ve noticed a lot of his supporters recently and a lot of people who have HIDDEN their support.

  88. Guest says:

Just saw the ne numbers on Fl it’s now 49 to 48 Hillary still holding on – this is so clips

  89. Jayna says:

I am so tired of listening to Kellyanne Conway. Her middle name should be “Deflect.” She was just on NBC being interviewed.

  90. SMD says:

Totally biased, you got this! Thank you for sharing and posting, it brings things back to a real and urgent level stat! It is about our health, family and well being. We need a country and leader that advocates for all of us, despite, race, religion, sex, income..we all deserve decent Healthcare and a future to look forward to. We support you and sending good thoughts, energy and vibes your way u you strong nasty woman!

  91. Guest says:

Now it’s flipped – trump now is leading 49 48 – damn this is nerve wracking –

  92. KiddVicious says:

Texas keeps flipping. A blue Texas win would be HUGE! or YOOOOGE!

  93. Maleficent says:

    This. Is. Bananas.

The media sure knows how to keep you glued to your seat.

  94. Rhiley says:

Florida is kind of red with over 90% in. If she loses Florida it is going to be a looonnnggg night.

    • Melly says:

I still believe she’ll get Florida. It’ll be by a small margin, but i still believe in Florida

      • NeNe's Wig says:

I don’t see how….unless there are YUUUUGE dem areas that haven’t sent in their tallies 🙁

      • Melly says:

The south and south east Florida haven’t fully reported. Those are democratic strongholds

      • Rhiley says:

I am with you Melli. But my anxious self has to be anxious. If she wins Florida, I will feel good.

    • EM says:

I hope you’re right Melly. I’m sad at the prospect of him winning but even sadder that SO many people voted for him. Record turnout in so many areas – how can you miss what he is, what his message is/will be? Thoroughly depressing.

Had a contractor at my house today, who assumed I voted Trump and I set him straight. At the end we got to speaking and he told me how he had walked 8 miles to vote for JFK way back when. This man (in his 70’s) switched from Democrat to Trump and I just don’t get it.

  95. EM says:

According to MSNBC Trump’s lead is too large in FL – too hard for her to recover. This is not looking good with VA too close and NC too early. I am really getting sad.

    • Guest says:

Trump is leading by 116,000 votes – steve K from MSNBC not sure if she can make it up. The rural areas are coming in big timr for trump

  96. NOLA says:

    Florida is killing me!

  97. Lensblury says:

Hang in there! All the best & love from Austria! (3 a.m. here)

  98. Guest says:

Well, I’m getting real scared here – thus does not look good – almost every state that Hillary should win is too close to call – I’m feeling really sad

    • Melly says:

I’ll admit, i’m starting to get a little worried about Florida.

      • Guest says:

She can still win if sge’s looses FL but I think she has to win NC, PA, MI and VA – James Carville seats if she loses Virginia he thinks she lose the election my stomach just dropped when he said that

What up with VA??? I that that was a definite for

I just don’t understand how people could vote for Trump

      • Maire3 says:

The anxiety of FL and VA still not confirmed, but my home state, TX tossed in their 38 to red with so many grey counties on the interactive map.

This election is giving me a freight train migraine

  99. Laurabb says:

I am soooo scared right now!

  100. Louise177 says:

Although it’s still somewhat early but I really want to cry. How can Trump be President? Hillary has got to rally.

  101. Jayna says:

    What? No way. Florida wtf?

  102. Nina says:

I’m not even American but still have a panick attack when looking at the map. It’s much closer than expected. Hope she will pull through.

  103. Jayna says:

    Now I can’t breathe. I truly can’t breathe.

  104. Rhiley says:

James Carvill: we lose Virginia we lose the election.

    • Jayna says:

I am stunned about Virginia. I just want to cry and then take a double dose of Ambien and go to bed.

    • Rhiley says:

Kaiser what the heck is going on Virginia?

    • EM says:

I’m done – seriously done. I will NOT fly an American flag for 4 years, I cannot look at my fellow citizens, I just can’t. I seriously hope that the wealthy people flee this country and leave Trump to screw himself and all of his supporters.

This is just beyond disgusting. Really bad feeling and experts are now saying that PA may go like FL. Trump wins and he has the Republican House and Senate.

      • Cee says:

I am so so so sorry for all of you. I thought argentine politics was bad but this takes the cake. People like Trump and Pence in the Whitehouse scares the shite out of me.

I am also disappointed in my fellow latinos.

  105. Cee says:

What is going on? I feel like throwing up.

  106. OSTONE says:

I am getting really scared. I feel like throwing up.

  107. Size Does Matter says:

Keep the faith! Broward County still not fully in and HRC is killing it there.

  108. SusanneToo says:

    Markets are tanking, per Bloomberg.

    • lightpurple says:

No surprise. If he wins, the Asian markets will crash as it is happening. And those who voted for him won’t understand why.

      • SusanneToo says:

Should the unthinkable happen, I take comfort in the fact that most of his supporters, especially the rural whites and the rust belt whites, will get exactly what they deserve – royally screwed.

  109. AJ says:

Ong! What is happening. I’m losing faith

  110. hnmmom says:

This is just all so terrible. I agree that I think I just might vomit.

  111. Fire rabbit says:

Seems like a looooott of people lied when polling. And he was whining about losing and things being rigged…huh.

    • EM says:

Probably not that many. I think that people came out of the hills to vote – many that have sat out the election. They said in Florida a lot of unexpected white voters that drove the numbers. I am just so sad and angry at the same time. The fact that he will have also have the House & Senate is unbelievable.

Come on Supreme Court Justices start taking every multivitamin under the sun – no retirements or deaths until 2020.

  112. Guest says:

I’m thinking of turning the tv off – I can’t take it

  113. virginfangirl says:

This might be the first election where I literally cry.

  114. Sunsetsnow says:

I’m feeling really sick!!!!!!!!! Need more wine!

  115. Joan says:

Canadian here. Truly afraid for my fellow Americans.

  116. Jayna says:

The newscasters seem shocked and trying to hide their disappointment.

    • Esmom says:

Yes, I just made a comment above that they are really rattled on CNN and PBS. But trying to stay composed.

  117. mee says:

Need lots of wine and weed. how is this happening

  118. Laurabb says:

    Looks like Florida is gone.

  119. Christin says:

Either polling is worthless, or every media outlet is trying to wring every ounce of drama out of the results. I don’t know what to think!

    • Jayna says:

The media is stunned and trying to hide their disappointment. No sane person wants him to win.

  120. celes says:

I am in Australia watching this and feeling sick to my stomach. I can’t even say his name or hear his voice without wanting to gag and the fact that so many people are voting for this monster makes me terrified for the future. I thought that Brexit was bad enough but this is even worse!

    • lozface says:

Australian here too and I am just in shock. I am trying to do work as well, but I can’t bring myself to do anything. So depressing.

Hillary has just jumped ahead in Virginia. Fingers Crossed!!!!

    • struthsayer says:

Another aussie here – feeling so sick for our US friends

Here’s hoping its just a horror movie set-up with a happy twist ending, The thought of #fuckface and his haters winning is just unthinkable (and i don’t want *one of* our resident haters and trump fan Bernadi getting more fuel for his bullshit)

      Good Luck America !

    • trace_smiles says:

Another Aussie here and can’t even say how terrible for my American friends right now. I’ve been following the result while I’m at work and dragged myself to the gym just to get away from the horror of this.

  121. Dirty Martini says:

The only winner tonight is alcoholism.

    • Melly says:

Weed is winning right now too. Notable mention: Xanax

    • O_o_odesa says:

Geez, you got that right. One drunk Canadian here. Come on ‘Murica, get your shit together.

    • Sherry says:

I’ve almost finished a bottle of merlot by myself. At least VA was called a few minutes ago.

    • Dirty Martini says:

For the record…….I didn’t vote for either HRC or DT. I voted 3rd party because I believe that’s what this country needs. I’m pre drinking for the next 4 years either way.

      • TotallyBiased says:

        This country needs Trump?
        Okay, we hear you.
But the third parties have gotten their 5% before (usually, somehow, with a Republican win, so there’s precedent) and done nothing with it and that Federal election money come the next election. So I just don’t see HOW this is good for the country.

      • Melly says:

I hope you enjoy a Donald Trump presidency. I hope all the issues that you cared about that caused you to vote 3rd party were worth it.

      • SusanneToo says:

You’re too kind Melly. I hope the third partiers are among the millions who will suffer the consequences. Along with the knuckle dragging trump supporters who think he’s their savior.

      • Tracym says:

Wow, it’s almost as if people can’t respect the fact that others feel and believe differently. It’s almost as if the attitude is agree with me or suffer for not agreeing with me. It’s almost as if some folks can’t believe that others have principles differing from theirs and reasons for them. So they must just be racist, stupid, homophobic, etc.

  122. The New Classic says:

Damn, I thought this was just me being pessimistic and came here to get some comfort, but it really is as bad as it seems…

  123. Melly says:

I’m currently in a deep pit of despair. I was staying super positive all day and now i feel like my heart has been physically ripped from my chest.

    • Jayna says:

      It’s how I feel, also.

    • Guest says:

Me too – I felt good, optimistic through the day – I felt she’ll win – now the feeling of despair. I have a headache –

I gotto pull myself together here and not give up – there’s still hope!!!

      What’s going on with VA?

      • Melly says:

She’ll get VA. Northern VA wasn’t fully counted. Northern VA, Richmond, and the Norfolk area are the heavily populated areas that determine the outcome.

  124. Jayna says:

    Florida is gone, essentially.

  125. MC2 says:

Jesus take the wheel!!! We are going over the cliff! I am not sure what to think & how many bags to pack. My heart is crushed & I’ve never, ever been more ashamed to be American.

    • Little Darling says:

Hi ladies. I’ve been stuck in different lands and was like OMG HOW ARE THE GIRLS AT CB DOING?

I’m sad and anxious and trying to remain hopeful. I’m shocked and nauseous.

  126. Gina says:

I am praying for you Americans! I am terrified and have not been able to sleep.I hope she pulls through.

  127. Jayna says:

Whew, she is probably going to barely win Virginia.

  128. Melly says:

Ok, Hillary is back in Virginia

  129. KB says:

My hand is getting a serious workout pouring all of this wine into my glass.

  130. lisa says:

omg i feel like i am having a heart attack, this cant be happening

  131. LizLemonGotMarried says:

I am embarrassed to be an American. I’ve never, in my life, said those words before. I can’t believe we’re going to elect that cheetolini, that orange Hitler. I’m straight, white, and affluent. I cannot imagine what POC, members of the LGBTQ community, and those without my means are feeling.

    • MC2 says:

I am embarrassed too- and I feel my country is filled with hate. It’s like a twinkie with a sick filling.

  132. Brown says:

I cannot believe this is happening. I have been so worried for so long that the polls were not reflective of his true supporters because my belief is that there was a hidden demographic of voters that were too embarrassed to publicly support him, but that crawled out from under their respective rocks to cast their ballots for him today.

I’m not even religious and you can bet your sweet a$$, I’m praying.

    • Lorelai says:

      This is torture. My god.

    • Sam says:

That was Trump’s whole belief this whole time. He constantly made reference to the “silent majority” of voters . He banked on playing to the ideas that most people don’t really want to say. He was banking on this the whole time, and now it seems like it’s potentially paying off.

      • Esmom says:

Yeah, people came out of the woodwork in droves. I saw lots of people when I was voting who clearly had never voted before.

  133. TyrantDestroyed says:

I want to think that everything is not lost. Stay strong my USA friends!. What an awful year for humanity this 2016 has been. Violence and hate and its finest.

  134. Guest says:

Ok Hill took the lead in VA –

It’s those damn rural areas that giving trump these lead

  135. Christin says:

Earlier, a lady from Michigan(?) who is a longtime Democratic Party member said that most more urban areas report last in each state; not to worry. That appears to be happening in VA.

I think the media is trying to keep the suspense going.

    • Size Does Matter says:

I’m hanging my hope on this being correct.

    • Aimena says:

In Michigan here, can confirm we usually look red til the last second. Grand Rapids, Detroit, Lansing and Flint are the big blue areas, and I hear turnout is lower than expected. We haven’t gone Republican in 28 years, and I’m terrified. I’m disabled, and will suffer in a red-led government.

    • Kelly says:

Michigan is making my sister and myself nervous. She’s a University of Michigan alum whose succinct reaction to Ohio going for cinnamon Hitler was f****** Ohio. To be fair, that is her general sentiment towards the state and its sports teams.

I’m in Wisconsin and voted early. Over 800,000 people voted early and absentee, at least 25 to 30 percent of the projected turnout. I don’t think those votes have been counted yet, so I’m not giving up on Wisconsin going for her.

Both of us were planning on getting our passports renewed for a trip up to Canada next year. Now it may be sooner if we have the possibility of some of the Handmaid’s Tale coming true.

  136. Lorelai says:

WTF is going on? How is this so close? I’m about to cry

  137. Manjit says:

03,00 am here in the UK. Was watching in bed but am now so terrified that the orange cretin might win, I’ve had to get up and pour myself a drink. Come on USA, reverse the 2016 madness. Pleeeeease.

  138. sage says:

Good Lord, my anxiety…. and I’m Canadian!!!

  139. Kyrgios says:

Wow. You Americans really know how to put on a show. I’ll give you that.

  140. bettyrose says:

WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING? OMG, this isn’t how it was supposed to go.

  141. Ladiabla says:

I can’t believe this is so close. I mean, this many people have zero critical thinking skills? Jesus help us.

  142. Carol says:

Looks like Trump will be our next President. Eeks!!!

  143. sodapop says:

Just opened a bottle of wine…was supposed to be the celebratory bottle.

what the heck is happening??? I am sick to my stomach at the thought of the Orange Asshole as president.

Long time lurker first time poster.. I just can’t .. I took my 6 year old to vote with me today and she is so proud to vote Hillary. She wore her girl super power shirt and I promised her Hillary would be president tomorrow so please fellow Americans don’t make me a liar!! I’m out of decent wine and just found some random alcohol in the fridge. I just can’t…, I won’t… My beautiful daughter and all of us deserve better!!!!!

  145. Lindy79 says:

I really wish i hadnt woken up and checked mt phone. I had a feeling it would be close but i genuinely thought it would still be in her favour especially on the swing states.

The amount of red on the map….. not going to lie, my hearts a bit broken for america and the rest of us

  146. LinaLamont says:

I’m so afraid for the sick and elderly. The Reps want to trash Social Security and Medicare… take from the most vulnerable who will have no way to recoup their losses.

    • vaultdweller101 says:

I’m crying. WTF America. This is so shameful.

    • Aimena says:

Disabled, and afraid. If they get their way, I’ll be unable to financially support myself.

    • Birdix says:

And the Supreme Court. The republican will get away with not confirming someone. The bullies win.

    • syd says:

Do you know how many of those very people you’re worried about actually voted for this outcome? Maybe they haven’t seen anything from the current leadership to gain their confidence for the next four years… please don’t think that they don’t have a strong opinion about what they’ve chosen- because they do.

  147. Melly says:

Canadian Celebitches: I’m nervous about The Orange Small Handed Dictator, so I was wondering if you have a room to rent? A couch I could live on? I’m a really good roommate. I’m clean and mostly responsible. I’m good with kids and animals. I do smoke weed, but you guys tend to be cool about that.

    • Ayra. says:

If not, I’ve got space in France. We’ve got sun and decent wine.

    • Arpeggi says:

You’re welcome anytime. No worries. Friends help friends (even if I’m starting to think about placing a dome over the whole USA for the next 4 years)

    • vauvert says:

You are welcome to the whole house. If he wins we are seriously considering a move Down Under. There is no wall to stop him from taking over Canada if he figures out that our oil is a lot closer than the oil in the Middle East. I am terrified, and I’m Canadian, but that doesn’t feel like enough protection right now…

  148. Jayna says:

What a nightmare. Really, I think the media thought this would be an early night.

Tom Brokaw just said they, the media, completely underestimated Trump.

  149. pixie-stix says:

I’m despondent…this can’t be happening. People seriously voted for that clown, jfc. Please Universe, get The Force working and put HRC in the White House.

  150. kadyo says:

I’ve felt optimistic this week, but things are not looking good now. I’m terrified. I’m an American living in the UK, and I have to leave for work in a few hours. Not sure the election will have even been called by that point. I don’t know how I’m going to make it through the day without bursting into tears.

  151. Timbuktu says:

My husband kept saying she’ll have it in a bag by 9 pm and making fun of me for worrying, yet here we are. I just can’t wrap my head around this… WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE? Even if she wins, I’m terrified of living in this country now. Even if she wins, what will they nominate and vote for in 4 years?

    • Esmom says:

This was my fear. People are closet supporters. And I think David Brooks on PBS nailed it when he said that white rural voters didn’t bother to vote for Romney or McCain but Trump’s message resonated so much that they were inspired to hit the polls in droves. UGH.

  152. Curtis says:

Yay!!!! President TRUMP! We love you!

  153. Jennifer Jones says:

I bought munchies to watch the election coverage tonight but my stomach is in too much of a knot to enjoy any of it. I am so deeply embarrassed, saddened, and angry that there are so many people have turned out to support him. I am genuinely concerned that racism, xenophobia, homophobia, misogyny, and elitism will continue grow to be the social and cultural norm. So many strides had been taken and achieved to deliver the message that those hateful beliefs won’t be tolerated.

  154. TheOtherSam says:

why do so many of the exit polls disagree with the final tallies and outcomes here? I’m getting suspicious of tampering. Yeah it’s crazy but this is a time ANYTHING can happen.

I get the final polls being off but so many exit polls? that’s not statistically possible.

    • Fire rabbit says:

Even with what’s guaranteed her in the West, she doesn’t have enough. She needs Michigan and Wisconsin back and that’s not going to happen. Third party votes have screwed us again. Johnson voters have handed the election to Trump in many areas. The very ones who voted for Trump are the ones who’ll suffer most. The markets are crasshing, good luck with your retirement accounts. If you’re a woman or girl, you dont own your body or life anymore. That wall will never have to be built because who the helll will want to come to such a backward, no-opportunity country? If you’re anything other than a white affluent male you’re screwed.

  155. Abbess Tansy says:

I am absolutely feeling sick and scared right now. I don’t want to lose my civil rights as an African-American woman or my reproductive rights. This cannot be my country.

  156. smcollins says:

It’s not over til it’s over, but damn…my nerves are pretty much shot right now. 😬

  157. Guest says:

Comey is a part of why thus is happening – what he did over a week ago with email was the worst

    • Esmom says:

Yeah, that was a pretty critical turning point in the race. It’s not over yet but far closer than anyone imagined.

Tt’s ironic that the pundits are acting so shocked…when they are the ones complicit in giving Trump so much attention for their ratings. Grrr.

      • Rhiley says:

I think the Comey thing f’ed every thing up. It is looking like it is going to come down to Michigan and he will likely win. It is going to be a rough four years.

    • Timbuktu says:

That’s what I just said… If she loses, it will be on him. He will have been that tiny difference that would have pushed it over the edge.

      • Fire rabbit says:

Third party voters screwed us again. They were often the exact difference she needed to take several States. If Johnson voters couldn’t stomach Trump… well youve got him now.

  158. MickiD says:

Have been a long time reader, but I never post. Canadians who have been here 15 years and became citizens 3 years ago. Proudly voted in the US for the first time for Hilary. We have joked about our “exit plan”. Now feeling numb. We won’t leave though…we will stay and campaign for what we believe is right for the US. We live in NYC, and will be fine, but I do fear for all the groups who will suffer greatly with a Trump administration.

    • kellygreen says:

I’m kind of at the point where I think this country got what it deserved. If people don’t show up to vote in their interests, or actively vote against themselves, they have no one to blame when their lives turn to total shit.

      • Timbuktu says:

Well, but half of the country still voted against. We don’t deserve this.

      • jmacky says:

@kellygreen you have a valid point. i can’t tell you how many women and people of color in the small texas town i live in proudly voted for Trump. people actively and ignorantly vote against their own interests and it is mind boggling.

    • Arpeggi says:

My boss moved from Mtl to LA a few months ago. He’s taking an unpaid leave for the next year from his current position so that we can continue our activities here until everyone is done and *should* close our office here next year. When we talked about his moving, I used to sayl/joke that he should wait until Nov 8 to make his decision. Tonight, I’m waiting for Michigan results to see if I need to send him a mail about him moving back here. I never thought it could happen

I’m so fucking upset! Thinking about a world where Putin, Trump (Pence) and Duterte are ruling is scary AF

  159. Minx says:

I think I’m going to barf. Florida? Why do you hate us so much?

  160. Gugu says:

It’s 5:27 in the morning in South Africa and I’m having serious anxiety attacks….

  161. JenB says:

    OMG. OMG. OMG.
    We gotta get Michigan.
    I’m scared ya’ll.

    • Courtney X says:

As someone from Michigan, be scared this state has bought into the orange fascists lies hook and sinker, and he tells it like it is, their is being racist, sexist and xenophobic rhetoric…

  162. vaultdweller101 says:

Wow. So this orange ass clown is going to become our president? It’s pretty much over, right? I really, really, deeply and truly dislike a vast majority of my fellow Americans now.

  163. Laurabb says:

    Got Colorado!

  164. Melly says:

    Hello darkness, my old friend

  165. JESS82 says:

i am SO profoundly sad. what does this say about this country? about humanity? i hoped this would be a chance to prove that people are fundamentally good and it feels like the opposite. how are the rest of us going to live in a trump america?

    • I just can't says:

I’ve been thinking about this all night and all I can do is say it confirms my long held opinion that our country is no better or more moralistic than most others. We’re following a trend that appears to be global: middle class white folks who are afraid of a changing world but highly motivated to keep the status quo. I’m so sick, and sad. I live in Philadelphia and while I think that we’re going to give Clinton our votes, I wonder if there’s anything I could have done different. Just so sad.

  166. Jayna says:

They have the house. They will most likely keep the senate. I have a sinking feeling he is going to win. Think of the SCOTUS now.

    We are fvcked, absolutely fvcked.

    • Birdix says:

Yeah, I’ve been thinking about scotus too. Not a great day to be a woman or girl. I feel betrayed that that many people could vote in a predator.

    • Tiffany :) says:

You’re comment sums up my worst fears. House, Senate, Supreme Court. Terrifying.

  167. Meghan M says:

Donald Trump is the new POTUS! Well, congratulations, if there are white males who are celebrating (though it’s also their Dow Jones that dropped already)
Sure, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but how anybody can believe that a candidate without experience and without a plan will make their lives better in a difficult world is beyond me.
Maybe someone will like me in Australia or New Zealand?

    • Courtney X says:

I live in Michigan and somehow people bought the lies that the orange fascist would bring jobs back, I am so despondent that it’s looking like my state may give the election to Hitler lite

      • Timbuktu says:

        @Courtney
So, should we not hold our breath for Michigan?

      • Courtney X says:

@Timbuktu, I have a sinking feeling that Michigan is going red, there are just so many people here in West Michigan, where I’m from, that have been left behind in the new global economy. They have no college education and the manufacturing jobs that they depended on straight out of high school are never coming back. These people now blame immigrants and are supporting a candidate that promises to take them back to the 1950’s when they were at the top of the economic ladder

      • Timbuktu says:

        Courtney,
but it’s so close! It’s all about which part of the state have not been counted yet, any hope there?
I don’t understand, though: Trump shipped his own manufacturing jobs to China long time ago and called it smart, how do they think he’ll help them???

      • lightpurple says:

But he won’t take them to the top of the economic ladder. He is trashing the economy at this very minute.

  168. MC2 says:

Ladies- never underestimate how much you are hated.

  169. Dali says:

    People here need to chill.

It’s not over until it’s over. There’s still the whole west coast.

  170. Saks says:

Can she still make it? I’m having a nervous breakdown.

    Also reporting from Mexico:
    – People in the border cities went from celebrating to deep anxiousness.
    – Mexican peso has just plummeted (analysts says most probably we are going to enter into recession).
    – Everyone is anxious and sleepless tonight (Personally I have family in a very red state and I’m currently scared to death for them).

    • Caro says:

Another Mexican here (and I live in Mexico)! I never comment on this side but I have been following it for a while, and it is so sad what is happening. We are afraid and angry at the same time.
A friend of mine lives in California and she told me that people were shouting on the streets that they “were going to kick the Mexicans out of the country”, she is really scared.

  171. I just can't says:

My heart is broken for my country. This is not the US that I know nor the future that I want for it.

    • Courtney X says:

I don’t understand how we as a country go from President Obama to this Hitler lite

      • isawhatever says:

Rural, uneducated, white, poor people who are textbook examples of the Dunning Kruger efffect. That’s how we got here. They’ve suffered tremendously under a Republican-controlled Senate and House, but lack the intelligence and insight to understand what’s happening to them.

      • Courtney X says:

It’s kind of sad to me that some of his voters are so undereducated and under informed that they truly believe that a presidency of the orange fascist is going to be anything but beneficial to the billionaire class

      • I just can't says:

I imagine Obama wonders how this happened too

    • North of Boston says:

Whatever the final outcome, over 40 million American people cast a vote for Trump/Pence.
What a sad day, when racist, misogynist, ignorance gathers so much support.

  172. Louise177 says:

I’m throwing in the towel – Trump is President (PLEASE LET ME WAKE UP TO GOOD NEWS).

  173. Courtney X says:

As a native Michigander, I have never been more upset or embarrassed by my state, how… how could people fall for this racist bigoted con man, I just don’t understand how people could for even a second believe that anything that the orange fascist would be for the greater good of American, in his 70 years of life on this Earth, he has never once put anyone before himself, but now suddenly he’s a champion of the middle class

    • Aimena says:

*waves from her neck of Michigan*

Around me, it’s not so much that they want Trump, they just want anyone but her. And I know several protest/third party voters that I could cheerfully strangle right now.

      • Courtney X says:

I’m in West Michigan, as far as I can tell they all whole-heartedly wanted the orange fascist, I can’t even bring myself to type his name at this point, I can’t believe that people couldn’t see through his lies and falsehoods, and now we have to face four years of his disastrous economic and trade policies and a Supreme Court that goes to the alt-right

  174. Rita says:

Is there hope? … God help us. The entire world might be fked.

  175. Guest says:

Does anyone thinks she still has a chance? Please give me some hope?

    • Melly says:

Ok, i’m feeling like shit, but she does have a chance. She HAS to win Michigan and Wisconsin. Only 1/2 the vote is in in Michigan and he’s only up 30,000 – that’s doable. Wisconsin is about 60% in and he’s up by 60,000 – that’s going to be difficult but it can happen.

      • NeNe's Wig says:

I think it’s too much of a long shot at this point….this is the.worst. 🙁

      • Kelly says:

Wisconsin had very good early voting numbers, around 800,000. I live in Madison and voted early. Those and the absentee ballots are usually the last counted, so they could give her the win. We’re still stuck with Our Dumb Senator Ron Johnson for another 6 years. On the other hand, that frees up Russ Feingold to challenge Scott Walker for governor in two years.

    • Laurabb says:

Just lost North Carolina. I am now losing all hope. I think I need to stop watching.

  176. Jayna says:

Sigh. Hillary just posted this to her instagram. My heart breaks for Hillary and the USA. I want to cry. I’m going to go self-medicate now and pass out. I can’t go to the bloody end. I need to end my pain and go to sleep.

“This team has so much to be proud of,” she wrote on her official profile. “Whatever happens tonight, thank you for everything.”

  177. isawhatever says:

If you protest voted for Jill Stein or Gary Johnson in a swing state, I hate you.

  178. NeNe's Wig says:

I’m on the verge of tears. What happened to us, America??

  179. Pedro45 says:

This is so wrong. I thought GWB and Cheney were the worst. I was very wrong.

    • jmacky says:

@Pedro45 haha! right? and the fact that Bush’s aide published the fact that not one Bush voted for Trump even heightens that fact.

  180. Secrety says:

So happy to see trump as president

    • Melly says:

I hope you’re kidding. If you’re not, would you mind leaving? I think collectively we can not deal with a Trump supporter right now.

    • lightpurple says:

So, you don’t have money in the stock markets that are plummeting and will be able to live without Social Security after they dismantle it, which IS on Paul Ryan’s sick agenda; you’re some sort of alien god who won’t need health care; and you believe in discrimination against religion, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and national origin?

    • Annetommy says:

Enjoy it while it lasts. Trump has to do stuff now. As opposed to wearing a hat and spewing nonsense. Check in with us in a year. We’ll see how everything’s going then

    • Miss Melissa says:

Enjoy your white trash nation, filled with racist, mysogynistic bigots.

He will do nothing for you. He cares nothing about you. You’ve merely fed his narcissistic ego past the point of no return.

      You mean nothing to him.

  181. sage says:

    California no doubt about it.

  182. Rita says:

Ok she will CA, which is 55 electoral votes = 190 + 55 = 245….she will need another 25 electoral votes (Oregon = 7 , Iowa 6, Minesota, 10, PA (20)…Is that how it works?) I think she can win electoral votes but not the popular vote. Someone tell me this is possible?

    • Melly says:

The 190 is with California counted

    • NeNe's Wig says:

Her 190 is already including the 55 from California….

      • Aims says:

I can’t believe we’re back in the dark ages…. Our reproductive rights are gone. The supreme Court is gone. Our lives are now at risk. I live in oregon and will never leave this state. We’re blue and will fight like hell against trump and his kind.

      • Courtney X says:

I’m in Michigan and as soon as i finish my degree, I am gone. I really thought that Americans would reject his campaign and his bigoted rhetoric

  183. nica says:

I set my alarm for 6:00am but woke up at 4:00 am (Portugal), unable to get back to sleep without checking the news. I went to the BBC site first, and then here. I still don’t understand what’s going on…

    • Jayna says:

Trump is likely going to win. It is hard to wrap the mind around that statement.

I will go on a news blackout for four years so I don’t have to see his ugly mug in interviews and listen to his fifth-grade word salads or read about the mess he is creating for this country.

I can’t handle what Hillary is going through after beginning the night thinking she had it. How devastating for her and all the hard work she had put into this race. This was to be her legacy.

      • mee says:

unbelievable. God help us. we’ve truly entered Idiocracy land.

      • Christin says:

This is pretty much what my husband said earlier this evening (before the unthinkable). We will just ‘tune out’ for four years.

I watched my 401k plummet in 2007-08, and it took years to recover those losses. That’s my biggest personal concern right now — the economic impact.

    • NeNe's Wig says:

      Neither do we.

      • nica says:

Thank you – obrigada – Jayna and NeNe for your responses. I hope so much what you say is not the case. Strong wishes from me, who is not going back to sleep…

  184. Notafan says:

I weep for my country. I didn’t think there was so much hatred. What a mess. What am I going to tell my daughters?

    Praying.

  185. Yura says:

When Obama won I was so happy I cried.
If Trump wins I’ll cry again but for a different reason

  186. Esmom says:

Quoting from a FB post my friend liked, “What this election has demonstrated is that more people than we want to believe have no problem voting for a candidate who has engaged in blatant racism, sexism, xenophobia, islamophobia, ableism, anti-immigrant sentiment. I hope if this election taught us all anything, it’s the importance of being loud and engaged citizens. This silent majority hasn’t worked for us folks. Stay positive and commit to organizing starting tomorrow.”

    • Kyrgios says:

Hardly surprising given the majority care more about shopping and entertainment than they do about environmental devastation and collateral murder.

  187. Melly says:

Trumps lead in Michigan has significantly narrowed. He’s only up 13,000 votes. Hillary can still easily win there.

    • Emma33 says:

Thanks for some hopeful news, I just read on npr’s blog that it might all come down to michgan. I’m in Australia and thought I was going to have a fun afternoon following this…but this is NOT FUN. My stomach is in knots.

  188. sodapop says:

It is absolutely insane to me how a KKK-backed, misogynistic, childish, racist asshole can become the president of the United States. This is a travesty for common decency and kindness.

  189. Cora says:

    I feel sick.

  190. Meghan M says:

Why have so many young females apparantly voted for the new POTUS Trump? Why? Please don’t say because Hillary is a criminal. Nobody wants to live in a world where repeating someone is criminal is enough to make that the truth.

    • SusanneToo says:

Because they have no self respect? Because they think they’re so special he’d never grab their pussies? Because they’re stupid?

  191. syd says:

From what I can tell, it does no one any good to not listen to people with opposing views to attempt to understand. This thread is full of assumptions and confirmaron bias. Honestly, it’s just healthier to have a broad perspective over a narrow one (group think).

    • Melly says:

Thanks for your input, we’ll all take that into consideration. We’re kinda going through some stuff right now, so if you could maybe give us some time before judging us and giving advise, that would be great.

    • Deanna says:

While usually I’d agree that keeping an open mind is important, this is not one of those instances. There are so many groups whose safety will be jeopardized by a Trump/Republican win.

    • SusanneToo says:

I’m not sure how one listens to racist, misogynist bigots. Except with utter scorn and pity.

      • syd says:

I’m an independent and have listened to as many people as possible. I’m sure the ugliness is there but not in the Trump supporters I visited with. They are good people who reject the DC establishment. To project anything else on the majority of these ppl is a… mistake and likely the reason Hillary lost. Yes, she is a woman and has accomplished some amazing feats but she IS also as “establishment” as it gets to Republicans- so much so that Hillary being a woman didn’t matter in the vote.

    • lightpurple says:

An extremely narrow perspective is about to win the presidency, the Senate, and the House.

    • Becky says:

      It’s confirmation bias.

All those people who voted for Johnson, a stupid protest vote.

Never underestimate the stupidity of the average voter.

  192. mltpsych says:

I have not stopped crying and shaking for the last 45 mins.

  193. Guest says:

I voted for HRC not because (like a lot of people) it’s a vote against trump but because I truly like, admire, respect and is inspired by her. I have always liked her – she is so strong, resilient, smart and never gives up. So yes I’m taking this hard – I wanted HER to be the first female president. This really breaks my heart.

  194. MsXWriter says:

(Reader of 7 yrs; 1st time commenter.)
Grand Rapids, MI here, born & bred. I’m so freaking embarrassed right now. Not surprised 1 bit, however. I knew he’d take MI. Just a gut feeling. GR is very Republican, so there are never any blue signs here, but I knew he’d carry the state. No one seemed to strongly support HRC even in liberal pockets. Ppl simply don’t like her.
So now we’re stuck w/President Trump. Dear Lord.
Canadian Friends: Windsor’s only 3 hrs from me – would you save a place for a lady w/3 dogs, 2 cats & an ultra-liberal heart? Please?

    • Courtney X says:

GR native here, I just can’t understand what the actual hell Michiganders were thinking, I have never been more embarrassed of this state. Save me a spot in Windsor will you?

  196. Tourmaline says:

Nate Cohn of NYT on Twitter —-Wisconsin has been called for Trump, and that’s it.

  197. Melly says:

    F#ck. Trump just took Florida
Wisconsin and Michigan really screwed us.

  198. Payal says:

How did a day that started with so much joy end like this? WTF 2016?

    • greenmonster says:

2016 – the year that took away David Bowie, Alan Rickman and Prince but left the world with President Trump? 2016 will never be allowed to sit on my table in the cafeteria.

Cubs won. That’s enough happiness to keep me chugging along while I ride out the shitstorm that was this election. GO CUBS. That actually made 2016 for me.

      • Lorelai says:

Seriously? Who the f*ck cares what baseball team wins? Our country just flushed itself down the toilet.

The fact that the Cubs won is of equal or more importance to you? Wow.

My 3 yo son asked me why I was crying and I didnt know how I could explain how disappointed I was that such a person could be given such responsibility. A lot of us are #withher and my messengers have been blowing up with sad messages and teary friends. I certainly hope my immigrant family members will still be treated with dignity and respect.
        We are shell-shocked.

    • Annetommy says:

Apart from former KGB operative Putin of course, whose opponents tend to end up either in jail or floating in rivers. He’ll be delighted. Maybe don and himself can go topless horseback riding together.

  201. celes says:

I am so gutted for all of you who voted Hillary and so disgusted at all those who voted for Trump. What a sad and horrible day for the world. And I cannot stand the thought of Obama having to face Trump as President.

  202. MarieJones says:

Never thought I’d ever say this, but I am so embarrassed and disappointed in this country right now. At this point I’m just making plans to get my IUD before my reproductive rights get taken away and looking into getting a visa once my lease is up next year. :'(

  203. Jayna says:

I’m all loaded up on sleeping pills ,but I feel like I need to stay awake to listen to her concession speech after the election is called for Trump. I will cry like a baby listening to her, but she deserves that respect. But that could be hours away or maybe some states are so close she will contest them.

She doesn’t deserve this, losing to someone like Trump. For all those that couldn’t be bothered to show up to the polls in important states, well, you’re in for a rude-awakening by this unqualified, whiny narcissist who will be your president.

So they elect a man who did poorly in the debates and even lashed out and called Hillary a nasty woman in a debate running for President. What a disgusting man.

    • Guest says:

I just took three sleeping pills – I turned off the tv from about 2 hrs ago. I don’t think I can watch her concession speech. I’m not watching news nothing tomorrow

  204. vaultdweller101 says:

I guess this is a great excuse to never watch the news again.

    This is pathetic.

    I am devastated.

  205. GR says:

    But if Trump doesn’t reach 270 ?

    • Melly says:

Either Trump or Clinton will get to 270. If it’s not Trump, then it’s Clinton.

      • Guest says:

What does she need to get to 270? Will she get PA?

      • Melly says:

I think she’ll get Pennsylvania. I also think she’ll get Michigan. The problem is Wisconsin. If Hillary holds Wisconsin, she wins. If Trump takes Wisconsin, he wins.

      • Maire3 says:

I don’t remember being up nearly this late in 2008 waiting for results.
Can’t sleep, but all I have is melatonin, and even 1/2 dose gives me fitful nightmares and that’s on a good day. Which this is not.

  206. Sophie says:

What the hell is going on?!?! How is this possible?!!!

  207. Tinkerbell says:

We deserve what’s likely coming if we put someone like this in office. What ever happened to critical thinking skills? What scares me is how many people I know who voted for him!

    • Melly says:

I couldn’t agree more. Unfortunately the people who voted against him will be disproportionately negatively effected by his policies.

      • Lorelai says:

And they are far too stupid to even begin to understand what they’ve done.

        I am heartbroken.

    • Alix says:

Critical thinking died in obscurity ages ago, unmourned by a nation of idiots who haven’t exercised their brains since the moment they got their first smart(?)phones.

  208. Aims says:

All the progress is gone…. I’m sick. I’m so fing sick.

  209. mayamae says:

I’m frightened by the rage I’m feeling. I don’t think I can speak to the people in my family who voted for him – which is most of them. I can’t handle the facebook BS, and we really should have seen this coming with the overwhelming pro-Trump hatred on facebook. Hillary supporters were being polite, the Trump supporters have been spewing hatred. I guess I’m lucky that I’m a white woman who does not anticipate the need for an abortion. But I’m still a woman, so I guess I’m still fu*ked. I really feel for the WOC who post here. I can’t imagine the fear.

Can anyone tell me which countries are most welcoming to American ex-pats? Which countries are easier to relocate to?

    • Annetommy says:

Ireland welcomes Americans, lots of American firms have big operations there. But I hope people won’t feel driven to leave their country because of this.

    • Sweden says:

You can always try with Sweden 🙂 we’re very open to americans!!!

    • SilverUnicorn says:

      @mayamae

Excluding the UK (which is more or less what you’ll get with Trump now), you’re left with Canada/Australia/NewZealand.

      Hugs to you!!

  210. NOLA says:

I am so ashamed right now.

    • NeNe's Wig says:

I’m just in shock. This can’t be real.

    • Alix says:

I guess we can stop feeling superior to the Germans who voted Hitler into power…

    • mltpsych says:

I’m not ashamed. I am a good loving hard working American who has seen my country get hijacked by the Tea Party which turned into this POS winning the presidency. Not my fault, I have done everything and tried to love America through all this dumbing down sh-t but damn this country’s majority has let me down and they should be ashamed. But they won’t be.

    • Annetommy says:

Oh my god, in the uk, had a nightmare trump wins and seems to be true. I am shaking so badly I can hardly type. So much positivity and enthusiasm here yesterday. My heart goes out to you. But it will affect all of us.

      • NeNe's Wig says:

I AM in tears right now, this is unfathomable. I don’t know how to feel or think other than to cry.

  211. Kri says:

This is our country.Tomorrow evening will wake up,take care of our kids and go to work. WE WILL ALSO START WORKING NOW from the ground up to find better candidates than the ones were presented with this year. We are not a Group Collective whose way is either red or blue. You care about the White House and who is I’m it? Then start working on your home districts.Get to know your officials.Judge them and let them know you are watching theor performance . Don’t dare cower and whine. Be a real US citizen and let’s fix this shit show from the bottom to the top. In four years you can hold your heads up in pride and really say “I did everything and the best candidate won”. Be strong, be smart and plan plan plan!!!
    .

    • another nina says:

And that’s the post, which sums up why I respect Americans and their attitude to politics so much! Thank you, Kri!

      • lulu3 says:

Thank you for that optimism – this is the only sane choice. And not just for America, we all need to grow up, get away from our entertainment and take more responsibility.

  212. Aimena says:

NBC is talking ties and recounts, and I wish I had some alcohol.

  213. greenmonster says:

I’m German. I work with kids and teens. I have to leave for work in about an hour. I always tell them to be a decent human being, to become educated and be empathically. What am I going to tell them today? “Just stay angry at everything and everyone, hate as much as you can and only care about yourself. Then you can still become president.”?

    I’m crying.

    • Bonzo says:

Apparently education (or lack thereof) played a big role in Trump’s advantage this election. So tell them to get an education!!

  214. Guest says:

All that hard campaigning by her and the Obamas – this truly devastating

  215. Alix says:

I wonder how little my 401(k) will be worth tomorrow.

  216. Tourmaline says:

The sick thing is—again Nate Cohn of NYT Twitter– is that it is projected Hillary will win the popular vote. That is, she got the most votes, but due to our freaking electoral college system, still loses.

  217. Erika says:

“I’ll be fine if HRC walks away with 300-plus electoral votes.”

Right now, it looks like Trump is the one who’ll take 300+ electoral votes.

  218. Erika says:

The New York Times says there’s a 79 percent chance Trump takes Michigan. That gets him to 270.

Bernie Sanders’ supporters must be furious right now. Hillary choked.

    • Who ARE These People? says:

Sanders (and I voted for him in the primary) would never have won either. She didn’t choke. Trump manipulated.

      • Esmom says:

I agree, Sanders was unelectable. We underestimated the power of the disenfranchised white voters.

      • Jess says:

please stop spreading misinformation. Every single poll pairing trump vs. bernie during the primaries showed that Bernie won by huge margins.

      • Jess says:

        @Esmom

no, sanders was not “unelectable”. He was a populist candidate who could of taken trump’s thunder in this election. Clinton can’t even beat the worst candidate in recent memory so maybe you should be calling Hillary the “unelectable” one.

      • GreenTurtle says:

Agree with Jess. A very similar thing drove many people to vote for Trump (or abstain completely out of an ethical stance) which motivated many of us Bernie fans: disillusionment at a broken oligarchy. If given any real alternative offering change, people could have been swayed. Just my two.

      • Esmom says:

You’re entitled to your opinion. Mine is that Sanders would have lost by a huge margin to Trump. He couldn’t even win the primary.

And we know now that polls are not exactly the most reliable tools.

    • Shelly says:

They are the ones to blame somewhat, too many of them stayed home and didn’t vote

    • Bonzo says:

I think Bernie would have galvanized the Dems. We wouldn’t have seen so many voting for Johnson in states where their votes would have made a difference to the Dems.

  219. AnotherJen says:

Have Cher and Bryan Cranston packed their bags yet?

  220. Guest says:

What about PA? I thought that was her firewall?? I can’t believe Michigan – this supposed to be a blue state – we need a miracle

I just went yo huff post and it showed PA is tied 48-48?

  221. Emma33 says:

    This would make Melania FLOTUS.

    Speechless.

    • Esmom says:

Omg I forgot about her momentarily. Hopefully one day we can look back at this at laugh, as the time we hit rock bottom.

  222. fee says:

I am so ashamed and angry with the people of this country right now. Jesus. I hope all the 3rd party voters are happy with themselves.

  223. lightpurple says:

The difference in each of the swing states is equal to the amount pulled by the third party candidates.

    • Esmom says:

I noticed that, too, but I also am not sure which side voted third party more heavily. It seems like it could have gone either way.

      • Abby_J says:

Judging by the people that I know who voted 3rd party, Trump would have won this thing much earlier if there wasn’t a Gary Johnson. Everyone I know that voted for him (Pennsylvania) voted because they don’t like Clinton or Trump. None of them would vote for Clinton in any way.

      • Esmom says:

I hear you although my experience is the opposite. The people I knew who were leaning third party would never vote for Trump and were on the fence between Clinton and Johnson or Stein.

  224. Mei says:

Been watching this from England, really hoping for some last minute luck for you guys, I honestly didn’t think he had so much support. I voted remain in the Brexit debacle so watching this is a depressing dejavu. Although according to the BBC it’s going to be near impossible for her to make up 61 EC votes :'(

    • kadyo says:

I’m an American living in the UK. I was devastated by the EU Referendum result, as my husband is an EU citizen. Now this. 🙁

  225. Cdoggy says:

It is like people are part of a cartoon and listening to the little devil on their shoulder. He has made fun of people with disabilities, called blacks helpless criminals, labeled immigrants a rapists, and degraded women as pussies to be grabbed. Truly, who is the devil here? Where is your conscience? WTF is happening here???

  226. Inas alsaadi says:

No One should shame Br-exit anymore if Trump wins .
Sad Sad Sad , people are voting for trump just because they are not much into Hillary . so they say what the hell lets try this Trump.

This elections really lacked solid charismatic candidates and that’s why many are with swinging votes syndrome .

Br-exit and Trump winning make it clear we are heading towards isolation and clear message of me, me , and me only.

The scary thing is that someone with trump mentality he will translate his win as people want what he wants exactly. in reality it is not. He is privileged racist SOB.

    • Bonzo says:

Authoritarianism is on the rise around the world… perhaps we thought we were immune to it happening here. I dread what the next 4 years will bring to our country and particularly those people who are not white and wealthy.

    • SilverUnicorn says:

“No One should shame Br-exit anymore if Trump wins .”

Quite the opposite, we should shame them both. That’s the least Brexiteers and Trumptards deserve.

    • Sixer says:

      We should shame them both.

I think, also, we have to accept that 20th century liberalism is in no shape whatsoever to beat 21st century right populism. It’s happening EVERYWHERE. Next up: Marine le Pen in France.

We need new answers to fill this void because the right is busy filling it.

      • BritAfrica says:

That’s what happens when you create a vacuum and leave a whole group of people at the bottom.

Problem is they can still vote and a Nigel Farage or a Donald Trump will eventually turn up to exploit that.

My fear is that this will be taken as a signal and more of these type of ‘politicians’ will turn up because they have been given the go ahead.

      • Sixer says:

Think of the UN security council’s permanent members.

Countries led by Trump, Putin, May, possibly le Pen and with only Xi Jinping even vaguely sensible.

  227. Sullivan says:

This cannot be happening. This cannot be happening. This cannot be happening.

  228. Trashaddict says:

If it’s even close, everyone should be holding their horses and demanding an actual vote count tomorrow. Think good thoughts and don’t let it be over until it’a really and truly over.

    • Elle R says:

I’m to the point where I’m hoping something comes out in the next few days or weeks that so thoroughly links the Trump campaign to Russia that it amounts to treason and essentially bars him or anyone associated with his campaign from taking office. The electoral college, in hopes of avoiding a crisis, then elects Hillary.

Honestly, given that this is 2016, I actually feel like this could happen and it would all sort of make perfect sense.

  229. Bee says:

I never knew it it possible to have secondhand embarrassment for an entire country. Just, WOW.

  230. Jess says:

wow the Canadian immigration website crashed because of people wanting to go to Canada,

  231. SusanneToo says:

S&P just halted trading as crash point has been triggered. Dow down 760. Way to go you dumb as sh1t yahoos.

    • Bonzo says:

We need to brace ourselves for a recession. Between Brexit and Trump, the markets won’t recover from this anytime soon. God have mercy.

    • Wilma says:

I know! I can’t believe it isn’t all over the news

    • Elle R says:

As a friend very, very sarcastically commented: I doubt Trump supporters care as I doubt any of them have money on the stock market, given that they likely belong to the Bank of Savings-Under-The-Mattress.

  232. Kid Kodette says:

I am Speechless… How can this happen?
    🙁

  233. Fire rabbit says:

We’ll never be able to impeach him when he breaks the law either because everything will be Republican controlled.

  234. Itdoesmatter says:

Wow, what a most excellent night!

  235. Singtress says:

    I am in such shock.
    How can this be happening?
I don’t even think the idiot wants to be president. His ego made him do it.

    • greenmonster says:

MY thoughts exactly. I think he never really wanted to be President, he just wanted to stroke his ego. Now he just wants to win, but he doesn’t want to do the actual job.

    • mee says:

yep, the crowning glory to this shitstorm. the a$$hole doesn’t even want to be president. congrats america, we got ourselves a racist, sexist, idiot, blow-hard who will spout nonsense and deliver his presidential addresses on twitter for the next 4 years, and teach your kids to use words like “bigly.” america – sinking to the bottom of the world order.

    • Em says:

Me too. I honestly can’t process this. Hadn’t realised how divided America is but it’s clear as day now that there is a huge divide in this country.

  236. M.A.F. says:

Well, I figured this day would come. I just figured I would be dead when it did. Washington DC is going full red, red like fire.

Does Canada need another history teacher? I’m more than happy to relocate.

  237. Sam says:

Nate Silver has up the demographics. ALL age groups for white people went for Trump. Now, for older people, that’s totally expected. But young whites also went for Trump – despite the the fact that they went overwhelmingly for Bernie in the primaries. A majority of white white people switched the parties. That is overwhelming. To all of you who thought Bernie Bros were not a thing, you were wrong. Sanders should be held to account for stoking this mistrust of the “the system” which primed young people to suspect Clinton and see Trump as a an outsider.

  238. mayamae says:

The Dow has dropped 800 points. The NASDAQ and SP 500 have been halted on futures trading due to a stop gap measure when crashes are occurring. It’s Armageddon and we finally know the reason for Trump’s hair – it’s to hide the 666 birthmark.

I can’t believe I’m wishing Designated Survivor will become reality – after the Obamas safely take their leave, of course.

  239. Inas alsaadi says:

Come on America you did not fully recovered from Bush J. yet to make another Trump mistake.

  240. Esmom says:

So remember Trump ranting in advance that the system is rigged?! So if he wins, it’s suddenly all above board? Heavy sigh.

    • SusanneToo says:

He’s probably right. Repubs are in charge of most of the states. I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of early votes by the “wrong” voters didn’t get counted.

  241. Turningvioletviolet says:

    FFS America.

  242. BB says:

    I just cannot anymore.

  243. CornyBlue says:

I just woke up and wtf America ?? How did it come to this ??????

  244. Bonzo says:

    David Frum ‏on Twitter:

“We may be living through the most successful Russian intelligence operation since the Rosenbergs stole the A-bomb.”

  245. Kath says:

This is disgraceful. The most powerful country in the world has just voted for its first fascist president.

And no, this is nor comparable to Brexit – not even close.

Sane Americans: please keep Australia in mind as a migrant destination. We will welcome you with open arms.

  246. Jess says:

elizabeth warren needs to run in 2020 and get trump out of office.

    • Saks says:

Sadly I don’t think any party will nominate another woman any soon. I do think almost any man would have won over Trump. There is not going to be someone as prepared as Hillary again but sexism and xenophonia won tonight.

  247. Blythe says:

Long time lurker here. This is a serious wakeup call for America. Although I am embarrassed that we will very likely have Trump as president, I have witnessed way too much namecalling of Trump supporters, and we need to start listening to them. I don’t think most Trump supporters are voting for racism or xenophobia. So what are their voting priorities? I live in a metro area, and for me, this has definitely been a wakeup call to understand what rural America cares about.

    • Bonzo says:

Listening to some of the commentators they are suggesting that these results show that the anger and resentment coming from those who’ve lost jobs due to trade agreements, religious folk who feel that their rights are being taken away and the general discontentment with the status quo were grossly underestimated by the Dems as well as mainstream media. I suspect the discontentment is rooted mainly in economy and the fact that many are not prospering as they did back in the 90’s and decided to take a chance on an outsider.

I think the next four years is going to be a sh!t show in which he will basically wipe out what Obama has done and we’ll be driven into a recession for the foreseeable future and very likely, war with Russia.

      God help us.

    • cynic says:

Actually, I do think that they ARE voting for racism and xenophobia. Speaking as a brown person, I hope that other countries will put us brown and black people first in line as refugees.

    • Inas alsaadi says:

I love your Comment. I think people are tired of board spectrum of promises , they need simple ones and more targeted at them . people in UK and america feel their own countries now belong to the world and not like when america is for american.

UK and US and other countries to follow , believe they wasted too much time, fortunes on Others.

These voters believe more in localization than globalization.

Also these voters believe they can live alone with their fortunes undivided without The Others.
I am not saying they hate black or any race. but they feel the Other people are only using their generosity while they are getting poor.

I expect some countries will follow Brexit and Us Trump.

In simple UK Brexit, Us Trump. Blame the world for their economics and demography.

I see so much parallel between Brexit and Trump winning.

This is my two cents on why there is Trump voters.

    • Esmom says:

I also think it’s racism and xenophobia. And probably misogyny. It explains why white voters who couldn’t bother to come out to vote for Romney or McCain came out in droves this time. They bought the fear that Trump was selling. I’m disgusted.

      • Inas alsaadi says:

Even by their own terms ,The problem is that they can’t get what they want, because many of US president tends to rule the world even by wars.

So they have to choose either rule america only to please their people or rule the world and accept the others.

      • Erika says:

        You’re pouting.

      • Esmom says:

I’m not pouting. I also think a large number of votes for Trump were not as much for him but against Hillary. She was up against decades of lies and propaganda by the right wing designed to discredit her and paint her as the enemy.

      • anon says:

Yeah.. It couldn’t be that poor, rural white men have been hurting and were voting for someone that promised to bring back jobs for them. In every other country, that’s how leaders get elected. That’s people voting for their citizens over others. How do you suddenly make these people racist?? Sure, there might be more racists in the rural ares, but as a brown woman, I’ve never felt threatened driving alone in rural America, but wouldn’t do that in my native country.

    • Dirty Martini says:

I have trump supporting friends, They aren’t racists or homophobes, Some are educated, professional women, They cite trade, immigration issues, fiscal / foreign policy and a republican power base that moved too far right on social, issues.

      • Annetommy says:

They may not be racists. But they voted for one. They probably aren’t fraudsters, liars, misoginists and serial sexual assaulters either. But they voted for one. I would find it quite hard to stay friends with them.

      • DIrty Martini says:

@annetoomy. I would never “unfriend” someone over their vote. It defies the essence of democracy and free speech, But I would unfriend someone in th basis of how they treat others who disagree with them over politics.

    • syd says:

Absolutely agreed- but this isn’t the group that believes there’s a need to broaden their perspective.

  248. Em says:

I don’t even know what to say. I’m just in complete shock. Never, ever did I really think that he might win….I just can’t comprehend how this has happened. I don’t know what else to say, you guys.

  249. Hatsumomo says:

I haven’t commented since. …..years but tonight all I have to say is…..wow. I’m just speechless.

  250. Rina says:

    🙁

  251. Moonstone says:

Canadian immigration website just crashed, because many people want to move out of the states, don’t blame them, wow!!

  252. Lady A says:

    Devastated and gobsmacked.
My state went blue, thankfully, but my ten year old son went to bed in tears.
    I just can’t believe it

  253. Lahdidahbaby says:

This is the worst and most demoralizing night of my life. I’ve been a political activist and an active feminist since I was 18. I’ve marched, picketed, protested, petitioned, and boycotted. I’ve never once failed to vote, even when I was sick or on the verge of giving birth. Tonight I see that it was all for nothing. I am, for the first time in my life, ashamed to be an American. Mortified and ashamed. And completely let down as a woman and as a person who has a mixed-race family, because this election was a referendum on justice, equality, equal rights, human rights. And America’s humanity was found wanting. Greed, venality, xenophobia, racism, and bigotry won. America has failed itself and everything it fought for in all the years that it was a beacon of hope in the world. That’s all I have to say.

    • Melanie says:

You took the words right out of my mouth. Sums up my feelings exactly. I’m gutted. I don’t remember the last time I was this angry. I feel like someone has died.

  254. Jess says:

Trump apparently did better than Romney with Latino voters. wtf?

  255. Nina says:

I only felt numb :((( Best luck to all American here. I can’t believe it would come to this. Stay strong and keep fighting for our rights.

  256. Jenn says:

I actual cried watching tonight. I am so heartbroken and scared for what this going to mean for the rest of the world. I’m not even American. I’m Canadian !

Hilarys campaign meant so much to me. I can’t deal and i don’t want to hear his voice.

  257. Erika says:

Trump’s going to end up with either 304 or 305 electoral votes, and Hillary won’t concede. Sore loser?

  258. Pip says:

    God.

So very very sorry that you’re all waking up to your own Brexit. 2016: the gift that keeps on giving 🙁

What the HELL is wrong with people.

Thinking of you, from the UK.

  259. Decapoda says:

All the votes are not yet counted. The loser will concede when the race is officially called for one party or another.

  260. Ninks says:

I’m a middle class woman living in Ireland, and I feel so sick and terrified right now. I can’t imagine being a black person, or a latina, or a Muslim, or a gay person living in the US right now. My heart goes out to them. What they must be feeling right now.

    • BritAfrica says:

IKR? My heart aches for how they must feel right now. It’s so sad.

You can imagine how the Poles/EU citizens living in the UK felt after the Brexit vote. I am black so I know it was really a matter of but for the grace of God.

  261. aenflex says:

I honestly think she could’ve taken it, if she hadn’t appeared so sneaky and conniving. When a man makes power plays, he’s a badass. But I don think most Americans have moved forward enough to appreciate those same qualities in a woman. Folks seem to look less favorably upon a powerful b*tch.
My take on it, anyway. It’s really too bad. I’d take sneaky and sharp over dumb and dangerous any day. I sort of wish she took the even-keeled, straightforward approach that Obama did. And addressed and explained things thoughtfully, rather than sinking to Trump’s low.
I just really wanted her to be elected.

  262. Still Deciding says:

So who’s the one not conceding? The irony.

  263. laur says:

Wtf America!!! I’m in the UK and had a bad feeling about this. I know everyone on here feels the same. I can’t believe there are more idiots out there than sensible folk who voted for him. I truly believe the world is in danger because of him. I’ve never wished death on anyone before, but is it too late to arrange an assassination?!?!

  264. Zoya says:

    Ok. Done.
    This is a disaster

  265. camomile says:

I’m devastated by Trump’s win and I’m not even American. I cried for Hillary and for the global future. I’m hoping still that this outcome will not be as devastating as projected for certain groups. God helps us all.

  266. HK9 says:

Canadian here-come on up, we’ve got space, and I’m dead serious. As for my US compatriots, your country as you know it is dead. I lived through Mayor Rob Ford in Toronto so I know what I’m talking about-you all are truly F-d.

You are going to have to get out of your houses and take democracy literally every day for the next four years if you want your lives to resemble anything remotely civilized. You’ll have to protest EVERYTHING if you don’t want Trump to dismantle the country. He’s not smart enough not to make that mistake.

In July 2006 my late uncle told me never ever to give up my Canadian citizenship (I was born there) just before he died and today more than ever I get what he means.

  267. Kate Bush says:

So sorry to be witnessing this debacle
I’m in New Zealand so don’t have any real idea of what it must be like for guys but am scared for what it means for the rest of the world think I need a media blackout for the next four years because I can’t stand his pouting orange face and whiny voice for one more minute.
It’s a sad day for us all

  268. Kassie says:

I can’t even appropriately express my feelings. How could this happen?

  269. greenmonster says:

    It’s done. Trump is President.

  270. Nina says:

People chin up. I know tomorrow looks scary, but you American have to keep faith. Now Democratic party is the only party who cares about the rights of women, gay and minorities. Don’t let this failure shatter the party, or else we will lose forever.
I know I’m not really in the position to say that (I’m not American), but please keep your hope. We may lose this battle, but there’s more battles to come. Here the free hugs for anyone who wants 🙁

    • isabelle says:

One good thing about this, it unearths what America has been hiding for a longtime. The sexism, the racism, the apathy, the “white” anger. The apathy of people sitting out and not voting because they were bitter. We can do better than this and hopefully this was a wake up call.

    • BritAfrica says:

Well said Nina! And ditto from me, US chums.

You are going to feel like some of us in Britain felt after Brexit but you are going to come through this so chin up. It looks bleak now but it’s only 8 years.

  271. Elizabeth says:

I’m so truly sorry for everyone who lives in America. My condolences to you all for having to deal with this misogninistic egotist for the next (hopefully only) 4 years. I’m speechless. I don’t know what this says for the future. All I can say is that New Zealand is a great place to live if you want to defect!

  272. isabelle says:

All I have to say, I wish Joe Biden had run. We probably wouldn’t be here right now listening to Trump.

  273. LiterallyaShambles says:

    I’m sobbing. I don’t know my country

    • BritAfrica says:

Oh LiterallyaShambles, I’m so sorry. I have tears in my eyes and I don’t even live in the US.

I’ve just woken up and I feel like taking to my bed again so I can’t imagine how you guys must be feeling. Take heart, you are the US, this is not going to break you, it’s going to make you stronger than ever.

      It’s a lesson in history.

  274. Maria says:

“What I’ve learned so far tonight: America is WAAAAAAAAY more sexist than it is racist. And it’s pretty f*****g racist.” — Patton Oswalt

so true. so sad. it’s 2016!!!!!

    • Kyrgios says:

I think liberal classism played a bigger part in HRC’s loss. When working class people voice concerns telling them to STFU because they’re uneducated idiots was always going to cause a backlash.

  275. Lahdidahbaby says:

This election turned out to be a referendum on justice, equality, and human rights, and the results have made clear that America’s humanity has been found wanting: Greed, venality, xenophobia, racism, sexism, and bigotry are the victors. America is no longer a beacon of hope in the world. After eight years of Barack Obama, a brilliant, fair-minded leader and an honest and decent man who has given no hint of scandal, corruption, or shame during his eight years in office — eight years during which Donald Trump led the Birther claim that our first black president was not even an American–we now have that sleazy, greedy, dishonest, sexist, morally bankrupt, and shamefully unprepared reality show host as our elected president. Congrats, American majority. And shame on you. I wish for Trump a karmic return in equal measure of all that he has done to our president, and a quick and thorough exposé of the corruption that has made him what he is today.

  276. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

I feel like someone died. I cannot believe it. So many of us are going to suffer. I’ve been hit with this sudden deep despair or depression. I’m just sickened.

    • Verona says:

I came here to my safe space and I am shocked too. I am at lost for words and I don’t know what to do, where to go….I feel like running away and sneaking to Canada. I can’t be in this great nation anymore….

    • Miranda says:

“Sudden deep despair,” exactly. I feel hopeless and helpless, and I can’t stop crying.

  277. Neens says:

2020 cannot come fast enough. I feel awful for those who did not vote that orange troll into office tonight. My condolences.

  278. HK9 says:

America, you fucked up. For those Americans who know what’s right, know this, you’re going to have to get up tomorrow and go down to the nearest NAACP/Women’s rights/LGBT rights organization and volunteer your services for the next four years. It’s that serious. Don’t stay at home an cry-GET.IN.THEIR.FACES.

It’s here, it’s real-do what needs to be done.

  279. nana says:

just.. WOW! America.. this is definitely a shock.

  280. Lola says:

i am so monumentally ashamed of my country. i am stunned. i am numb. i am in tears. the entire planet is doomed. literally.

  281. Millie says:

As a Black Canadian woman currently going to University, I wanted to say that I am not surprised by the results or shocked. I expected it. I don’t know how to explain it but as a minority sometimes you just have a sense about these things and people said I was being pessimistic but really I was being a realist.

The reason why Canada is not some mecca for American’s to escape to is because I have been gradually noticing the spreading of the same amount of hatred spreading on my campus. The amount of racist graffiti about Muslims has skyrocketed on my campus. The administration ignores these hateful attacks. I witness the unfair and racist treatment of Aboriginal students just trying to get an education in a system stacked against them happens on the daily. They say the washrooms are gendered inclusive, but the amount of homophobia, transphobia and sexism many of my LGBTQ friends face is again not surprising. I get people acting all conflicted about whether to call me black or not but do not hesitate to call me the n-word when they don’t think I am listening. And some people even walk around on my Canadian university campus wearing ‘make America great again’. All these things had been building up gradually and so it seemed that political correctness was exposed for the false generosity that it truly is. It is all surface level for so many people, an alibi for any questions they may get about their attitudes for others different to them.

So lets not for a second think Trump is an American problem. He is a symptom of ‘white anger’ and white supremacist capitalistic patriarchy (as bell hooks puts it). This is not an American problem, it is a ‘white attitude’ (not limited to whites alone as all races can have it) that has to do with a system where there is a hierarchy of races where white sits on the top that is due to a history of colonialism that all countries must accept their legacy of partaking in. People do not want to give up their power but as a minority I am tired of always having to be the one to bridge to the white collective memory, to prove that I am equal and not scary and worthy of humanity and respect. I think all oppressed peoples are tired of having to convince the oppressors of our right to exist.

I do not think it is far to explain it away or think it can be solved by moving to Canada. I am Canadian (a minority black woman) and I see the same attitudes in Canada and always have. We are not some special snowflake country and America is not some horrible evil country. The only thing that has changed is the acceptability of these attitudes and isms as ‘free speech’ and ‘speaking one’s mind’.

    • Pip says:

Sadly, Millie, I think you’re absolutely right. Here in the UK, the recorded incidents of racist abuse – against anyone even vaguely “different” – have skyrocketed. & not just since the Brexit result.

Muslims, jews, blacks, Polish, Hungarian, Romanian – anyone with any kind of accent – are all targets now. It suddenly seems to be acceptable to be a racist bastard.

      Horrifying & frightening.

    • Vox says:

I feel the same way about Australia and while I thought Hilary might squeak by I never thought for a second it was a sure thing. People here have offered up our country as a refuge but we’re hardly any different. For what it’s worth I’m white but I am a minority in other ways.

We elected Tony Abbot as our prime minister even after he said misogynistic things about our first female prime minister, drastically cut funding for Aboriginal people and admitted he wouldn’t do anything for the LGBT population. After the Lindt Cafe terrorist attack Muslims were so abused that concerned people took to social media to offer to drive them to work or ride with them on public transport because there was real fear someone would be hurt. People here despise refugees, who would never make the life-threatening journey here by sea on overcrowded boats if they weren’t truly desperate. They want to send them home and voted for a PM whose solution to boat people was to burn the second hand fishing boats in Indonesia – the only kind of boat the people who work in the fishing industry there can afford. Those who seek asylum are housed in detention centers with such deplorable conditions that inmates have committed suicide in protest over them. Pauline Hanson, whose entire platform is ‘one nation’ – as in one, white nation – was actually re-elected after years of being ostracised from politics for her xenophobia. So much for ‘for those who’ve come across the seas/ we’ve boundless plains to share’.

We are no safe haven. When the US trends towards conservatism, so does the rest of the world. Americans seem ignorant to the power they have over the rest of the world and how by voting in a misogynist xenophobe they’re sending the message that they condone those things.

  282. minx says:

    This is sickening.

  283. The third party voters did not cause this–Trump supporters voted him in. The pendulum cannot stay on one side forever, life is a balancing act. Bernie really had a better chance and people were too blind to see it. I’m proud that I voted Trump.

    • SilverUnicorn says:

Bernie never had a chance and if you went from Bernie to Trump, it also means you had not understood what Bernie stood up for. Certainly not fascism.

      • Melanie says:

@imtellinya Hope you’re happy with the next Supreme Court justices. Our country will be changed for decades, at the very least. Your logic goggles my brain. I was certainly no Bernie supporter, but how in the world you think Bernie would be ok with this ??? I don’t think you understood Bernie.

  284. spidey says:

Is this partly due to having a president who can’t get his programmes through because his party doesn’t have the majority in the senate?

    • SilverUnicorn says:

I don’t think that’s the reason. It’s more due to people freaking out (about jobs/immigration, you name it) and choosing a candidate who appeals to those sentiments.
The fact whether Drumpf will act on those promises or not is irrelevant.

      • BritAfrica says:

Thing is…..he now has to deliver.

He is going to get Apple and co to move their operations/plants back to the US, so now he has to put his plans (the assumption is that he has made plans) into action.

        This should be interesting.

      • spidey says:

        Thanks

  285. Solanaceae (Nighty) says:

What happened USA? Woke up in Europe in a state of shock… Even the financial markets are losing big money… Let’s hope he doesn’t f*** up the world for good…

    • Solanaceae (Nighty) says:

I mean, Europe has two loonies on each side, Putin in the East, Trump in the West… God /Allah/ Zeus and all the gods help us

      • SilverUnicorn says:

Europe has a multitude of loonies at the moment… that guy in the Netherlands, nazi party in Germany & Austria, LePen in France, Salvini/Grillo in Italy, Farage/Tories in UK… name a country anywhere in the Western world and it has the same problem.
        Italy’s next, referendum in December.

If all western world governments go down and fascists seize the power, better to start building nuclear bunkers and stock provisions. No joke.

  286. Zannoub says:

I’m not an american, and I’m crying now. I’m nauseated, I’m afraid for the repercussion of this outcome on my region (North Africa).
I’m so so sad. My heart goes to you americans, and to all humanity.

  287. SilverUnicorn says:

Hugs to all of you in US. I’m so sad you woke up to your own version of Brexit and even worse, at least in UK we’ve judiciary and Parliament keeping the fascists in check.
Who’s going to keep in check OrangeLoompa?
    God help you all!

  288. Agnes says:

Accept my condolences from Europe. Some of you are yet to wake up to this terrible news

  289. Lucy2 says:

I am devastated. Devastated for the United States, devastated for the world. For our LGBT citizens, for our Muslim citizens, for our women citizens, and our non-white citizens. The nation has let them all down.
We need a strong reaction in the midterm elections to limit his power, and then a really good opponent in 2020 to take him out. And no one on the Supreme Court to leave until he is out of office.
I just don’t understand this, how people can look at everything he has said and done, and disregard so much awfulness.

    • JudyK says:

I’m too tired and too emotional right now to put a coherent sentence together. You said it beautifully. Thank you.

  290. Babs says:

French here. I’m devastated. We are about to live the same thing. It Will be war plain and simple. God help us all

  291. Goats on the Roof says:

I’ve been up all night watching coverage, and I’m still in a state of shock. I really didn’t see this coming. WTF, America?

  292. Melanie says:

Can’t sleep. Beyond angry. Disgusted. Hope I find the strength and resolve to continue caring about my country. Or anything really. This vote shows how truly selfish we are as a nation. I think I’m going to be much less compassionate in coming days. This really is the end. It’s not a joke, the once oh-so-hilarious sideshow campaign. Our country will never be the same. The Supreme Court is screwed. So many things that we worked so hard far, for years and years, down the drain.

This country is much sicker than I ever imagined. I felt as a feminist, we were actually making so many strides. I feel like I’ve been lied to for years, and I was dumb enough to believe it. Truly want this whole place to burn down. I just don’t care.

  293. Janetdr says:

I refuse to believe this outcome. Did the Russians really hack us?

  294. Jamie says:

Australian here… totally gutted by this, still not accepting it’s real.
I can’t imagine how you guys feel… I feel sick from across the globe 🙁

  295. can't even says:

Heartbroken. There are no words. He barely won and will destroy all progress we’ve made. Here’s hoping Obama will at least get Garland on the Supreme Court in the next few weeks.
