America has elected its first fascist president. It was stunning news to wake up to, honestly. Yes, I read the tea leaves and started doing the electoral math last night, when they called Ohio for Donald Trump, following his wins in Florida and North Carolina. So I went to sleep knowing that I would likely wake up in a country that elected an orange fascist for president, but I still had hope that Hillary Clinton would somehow still be able to pull it out. She did not. As I’m writing this, Trump won not just Florida, North Carolina and Ohio, but he also pulled out wins in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan. Congrats, you guys. Voters in those states looked at an admitted sexual assailant who hates gold star families, women, Muslims, Hispanics, all non-white immigrants, fat people, the disabled and more and thought “Seems presidential.”
What were the demo breakdowns? It was all kind of awful. Obviously, Trump won white voters by significant margins. He lost Latino voters by majorities across the board, but he was able to pick up more than 30% of Latino votes in Florida, which was the beginning of the falling dominos of our first fascist presidency. The third-party votes were definitely enough to ruin Clinton’s chances in several states, so I’m so glad that so many people voted their “conscience.”
Nate Silver was mercilessly mocked for including a significant chance for a Trump victory in his assessments for the past two weeks, but as it turns out, Silver was one of the few statistics-guys who saw a potential for a Trump win. Apparently, Hillary Clinton has already called President-Elect Trump to concede, and she’ll be making a speech at some point this morning.
What else is there to say? I don’t feel sick to my stomach, I feel numb and empty. I’ve felt numb ever since FBI Director James Comey made his first announcement to Congress about the emails, which I’m sure will be seen by many as the beginning of the end of the Clinton candidacy. I will tell you this story though… I was a Dem organizer during the 2000 election, and when Al Gore didn’t win outright, and during all of the chaos that followed with the Florida recount, I felt sick. I also felt like the only person who saw clearly how terrible George W. Bush was going to be as president. Like, I knew he was going to be a war-monger. I knew he was going to crash the economy. I knew he was just going to appoint terrible people. I felt like screaming whenever someone was like “Oh, better Bush than Gore, hahaha.” So, I’ll say this: in the wake of Trump’s election, we all know how terrible he’s going to be. So at least I’m not alone. Still, I guess I didn’t realize until now how much Americans absolutely hated women, across the board. Not only will Americans not vote for a woman, they will vote for a man who openly despises women and wants to punish them for crimes like “having reproductive rights” and “being over the age of 35.”
Donald Trump once said that when all is said and done in this election, we’ll be calling him Mr. Brexit. He was right, wasn’t he? Ugh. Here’s his victory speech:

Next time someone tells me rape culture doesn’t exist, I’m gonna punch them.
Exactly. He is the walking embodiment of rape culture, misogyny and racism all rolled into one. The end times are near. The American people have voted for hatred and greed. Never forget how much the world hates women.
And don’t forget the full-on homophobia his VP, Mike Pence brings.
I wish I could thumbs up this article, and thumbs up these comments. I am Canadian, and I am sitting here crying in my office today.
American women, of all races and creeds, I am so, so unbelievably sorry. I stand in solidarity with you.
Thank you ElleP. I also am so sorry to the entire world, that my country could even contemplate, let alone do this. qw – on point!
Sitting here in Australia, thinking how the US will now be viewed by hostile nations as a laughing stock. Makes our system of having an old lady living in a castle half way round the world as our Head of State seem like a superior solution.
I am in shock. I am terrified for us as a nation and for the rest of the world for the stupid things we may do in the years to come. I am telling every young woman I know to stock up on birth control, offering a shoulder to friends who are not white or straight or have children of color. I was sad on Tuesday that my mom couldn’t vote for Hillary -she died last fall at 92. And now I’m glad that she didn’t see this day. Please, let this be our rock bottom.
Go watch the protests of all the young people in several cities. It gives me hope.
Sending you tons of hugs and prayers America. Meanwhile in my country, we have voted for a President who thinks it’s okay to talk about ogling our VP’s legs during an important speech.
Trump’s views on immigration won him a lot of votes. People were afraid Hillary would let refugees in by the score. Trump said that the other day, “Hillary will throw open the gates to everyone. Come on in!” I think this played a huge role in Trump getting elected.
AMERICA what have you done?
As a Canadian at my first work conference in Florida, I’m not looking forward to leaving my hotel room. We popped into a Republican Party last night. It was so strange to us, to see what looked like educated people cheering for Trump.
Those were my thoughts as well. I’m Canadian too but I have a lot of family in the USA (my late grandmother was born in Ohio; most of the fam is now in Arizona or California) and I cannot imagine having to wake up knowing the leader of my country will soon be Trump. Gah.
Big hugs from my maple-leaved self.
That was the problem: exit polls showed that arguably educated Americans voted for him. Clearly we need to reform our schools from top to bottom because critical thinking is NOT being taught.
I’m so jealous of Canadians right now. You guys have Justin Trudeau as your PM and we just elected the orange monster to the most powerful position in the world. I am going to throw up.
This American did not vote for Trump. I am deeply saddened, angry, disappointed, and scared for what we have become. But as bad as it is for me, and for as bad as I feel, I am not Muslim or a person of color. Those are the people I feel more deeply for. They have got to be scared beyond belief. I live in the state of Georgia but in the city of Atlanta. It is difficult to be a speck of blue in a sea of red. It kills me that the hicks (yes, I’m using that word because that’s what they are) are able to dictate what happens in this progressive city, along with other progressive cities that are essentially run by scared Republicans.
I am nervous that terrorist attacks will grow. I am scared that my children will not have medical coverage under my insurance anymore. I am scared that those families who have children with disabilities will no longer be able to get the care they so badly need. I am scared Roe v. Wade will be repealed, or at least strongly pursued to be repealed. But being scared does not mean that I have to give up the fight. I will still fight for the rights of minorities. I will still fight for the rights of women everywhere. I will still fight for my children and their children to live in a society where racism, homophobia, xenophobia, misogyny, and sexism are not acceptable.
Dammit, America!
As an American I am ashamed. I voted Clinton and cried twice now over the results. My apologies to the rest of the planet 😢
Ahem. MOST Americans did NOT vote for Trump.
my hubby said the same thing he is from the UK! I’m in shock a man that the kkk loves is in office now! its time we do away with these collage vote bull shit American’s wanted her not a man baby child
Not America. Clinton won the popular vote. The electoral college and the DNC did this.
The electoral college can still fix it since they haven’t “officially” given their votes, but I’m not holding out much hope that they will.
Had the DNC let Sanders run instead, I think we’d be congratulating him. Not that I’m congratulating Trump. I’ve lost many Facebook friends over the last two days due to my being upset that he won, and them bragging about it. I’m so afraid for women, people of color, people who are LGBTQ, people who are senior, poor, and disabled, too. I am some of these demographics and it’s very worrying that we now have a Republican majority in Congress with a racist, anti-woman, sexual predator Republican President and a homophobic and anti-woman VP.
Never knew how dumb my fellow Americans are….until now. This is going to be awful, many times worse than George W. Plus, think about all the other turds who will float to the top and sit around the cabinet table….Giuliani, Gingrich, Palin perhaps. It’s going to be ugly.
I think a lot of “smart” people who said they weren’t voting for him must’ve secretly voted for him but didn’t want to deal with their friends and family disliking them.
I feel like Piers is going to get some kind of positions with Trump. the way he’s been supporting him has been so strange (to me at least) that I’m sure Trump has promised him something if he doesn’t criticize him publicly.
I’m not really a UFC fan but did anyone see Dana White’s excited post that Trump won??? It’s disgusting
I can’t stop crying. It really hurts to know that the majority of Americans side with Trump and his hatred.
What is it with Giuliani, is he just pissed that HRC took his Senate seat?
F**K NO! Not Palin! Not if there’s a God! Take it back Vava, take it back….surely we… we…we won’t have her to deal with right, right???? RIGHT? Trump is bad enough…not her, anything but her!
Coffee is not helping, where’s the whisky…
Off-topic but I wanted to put this at the beginning of the thread: does anyone know where LittleDarling is?
I need to give her a virtual hug…
Kitten- I haven’t seen her around here but I hope she’s taking care of herself. I hope you are and I hope we all take a little while to be kind to ourselves and others. We are in this together and we are (still) stronger together. I know you are waiting to give her a hug but here is one from me while you wait…..(((())))
Aw thanks, MC2 right back atcha. You, WATP, Melly…the whole gang–group hug.
♥
I am in market research for a living. I study demography, economics, lifestyle, attitudes and the drivers of aggregate trends for a living. I can assure everyone there are a lot of dumb Americans out there. They dont read beyond tweets or headlines. They dont recognize facts. They will vote against their own economic interests. They dont care to remember or reflect upon history. They feel disdain for intellect and learning, they feel threatened by inclusion and respect of differences. And they won. It’s a sad day indeed.
@Elleno: I really appreciate your comment. You give a concise characterization of the Trump voter. It’s useful to read them described in just a handful of sentences. Terrifying, but very useful to know who elected this nightmarish clown to the highest office in the land.
Megan – the majority of Americans didn’t vote for him. When you look at the other three candidates, 6 million more people didn’t for him than did vote for him. He won the electoral college without a doubt, but that doesn’t reflect what the majority wanted.
Also, well said @Elleno
Thank you all for the kind words that are outside of the U. S. Know that half of those who bothered to vote did not want this man. We are sorry we could not get this done. Sad that people didn’t care about his treatment of some women. Now he says we need to unite. He has been the cause of this divide. He has been dividing the country since insisting our President was not born here. Many people have been dividing the country for the past 8 years. It’s laughable that they are asking for unity now.
I am an educated woman who voted for Trump. I am sick of being told only uneducated people voted for Trump. No I voted for the person least likely to concerned with their own personal agenda that mocked those who were considered “lower class” and “unworthy” of being heard and listened to. Had Hillary been listening she might have understood that people of the United States wants a leader who is not crooked, that doesn’t buy her way into the White House and will actually try to create pride in the people of our country. We are tired of a society that does not have the morals and ethics to treat each other as equals regardless of race, color, religion. If I can’t trust the morals of my President than how can I believe they will help make our country great again. Trump may have a mouth on him, but at least the people who speak against him don’t die or disappear.
@EWTVT – I’m a bit confused by your post because you’re saying that Trump isn’t crooked. Have you not seen that he has something like 70 lawsuits pending against him and his companies at this moment? Have you not read all of the vendors who never got paid by him? Clinton is awful, for sure, but Trump is no better.
You’re “tired of a society that does not have the morals and ethics to treat each other as equals regardless of race, color, religion.” So you voted for the person who encouraged his followers to beat up black people, who hates Muslims, who wants Hispanics thrown out of the country, who created a University to defraud people out of thousands of dollars, who cheated on two of his wives out of three, and who allegedly raped his first wife according to what she said in her divorce deposition and her book. As for not disappearing when speaking against him, I guess you haven’t read what the girl who alleges she was raped by him at age 13 said about his allegedly being involved in the disappearance of another girl that young whom he allegedly raped. You trust his morals? Okay then.
With that, I’m out of this post because I have to figure out how I’m going to take care of myself for the next four years, rather than arguing online. I’m a disabled woman who is of childbearing age, and my guess is that both my reproductive rights to have birth control and my health insurance options will be changing next year, due to having a Republican majority in Congress and a Republican President. I also have to figure out where I’m going to be living since Trump has vowed to get rid of the EPA. Y’all have a great day.
My plan is to take care of myself & others today. Heal up. Then we are going to fight, fight, fight. There is a war on minorities brewing & we need to get ready. But today we rest and I pray we are kind to each other.
Midterms are coming up. That is another chance for us to speak up. I’m trying to stay positive that people will actually show up. But, this is America.
Democrats don’t show for midterms, and states are gerrymandered on behalf of Republicans. It’s a pipe dream.
Thanks for all the love. A white middle class American here deeply saddened by the outcome of our election. Trump does NOT represent my values.
Co-sign….its despicable and sad. This has also shown that the USA has more respect for women than other countries they point figures at.
I’m late to the game in commenting but I just wanted to add that I agree with all of this so much. No one else has been saying what I’ve been thinking…America doesn’t feel like a safe place for women. How could my fellow Americans hate women so much? I’ve been disappointed by elections before (2000 particularly) but I never cried like I did last night or felt so cast out. 🙁 Sad days ahead.
I’m so sorry America. Sending you love and best wishes from Australia.
I had the best time in Perth and wish I had more time (and money!) to explore the rest of Australia! Maybe moving there is an option😜
Move to Perth! It’s great here.
On another note, I’m deeply saddened by the results today. It seems to me that the fear of immigrants/terrorism/war was a strong factor in Brexit, and I wonder if the same holds true here?
Look at how One Nation did in the recent federal elections. Sadly the same does hold true here. 🙁
Exactly Rae, Australia had its “anti” vote in our recent election too. Those votes went to 3rd parties however. Massive cross bench anyone?
Yes, here in Australia One Nation took some ground and made us sit up and examine the horrible, underbelly of our society….however…..our Prime Minister is not a misogynist and would never, ever be endorsed by the KKK. We have public healthcare and fight for it. We have lots of problems but to be the biggest island in the Asia Pacific region, to be wedged between a rising China and being a faithful ally to the US is scarey beyond words. History repeating?…..recession, bigotry and hatred, please God, I hope not.
Sincere hugs to my American friends who are hurting and I know you are many.
To the rest of you….when your pumped up nationalistic feathers calm down be aware that you have exacerbated the image of Americans as loud, arrogant and stupid.
We took the kids out for dinner tonight to try and help out the local economy, and to try and distract ourselves. It was pretty much me crying into my rice whilst the kids ran around joyfully, oblivious to it all.
Came home and managed to smash up the coffee plunger. And found my sea snail dead.
2016, you started by taking Bowie from us, and you’ve somehow managed to get even worse.
If the zombie apocalypse broke out tommorow, I’m not sure if it would make 2016 better or worse.
My thoughts exactly ! A year that begins with Bowie’s death can only end in flames, right ?
@ Locke Lamora: I think a zombie apocalypse would actually be an improvement.
Bowie AND Prince. 2016 you are not my friend.
Locke Lamora, my husband and I have a plan and lots of canned goods from this summer’s garden. I like our odds better in the zombie apocalypse. It’d be like a reboot.
My sentiments EXACTLY – the year started with the shocking death of David Bowie and has just carried on down from there… people at work couldn’t understand why I was going on about the female factor. Yes they would rather vote in a misogynist than a woman. I’m in South Africa, we know about dodgy politicians, unfortunately…
And here is more sympathy and good wishes from Australia. Gosh, you guys, I wish you could all come here. We might whinge about our Prime Ministers, but honestly, compared to this utterly despicable orange goon, we’re doing very well. Oh, geeez. Tears for America.
I’m sorry world.
Same! Love from scotland!! I have been up since 5am watching for the results cause i was so scared. The most outright fear i have seen online is from young american LGBT people and POC and im honestly terrified for them. I am horrified that after all the progress america made in the last decade it will be erased because of this man. The rise in right wing politics in the west is terrifying me – my area has gotten pretty homophobic lately (not on the same scale as in america currently but still homophobic) its pretty much ensured im staying in the closet for the forseeable future and we only just got in lots of refugees so the anti-immigrant, homophobic, racist politics have been becoming pretty popular and its petrifying. Im praying for the best from this – a trump presidency is horrifying to think off and i pray we can all get through this horrible moment in history.
Same from England
Same from Germany
Just for your information: a lot of the refugees come from very patriarcharic background where there is a lot of homophobia going around. So it is a “lose – lose” situation if you are pro open borders you get more people who were socialised in quite archaic cultures and on the same time there is a rise of the very right.
Scary times.
Love from Hungary!!! 🙁
Thanks guys! American here. Scary times are coming IMO. Thanks for the love
Canada awaits you. Any chance you can bring the Obama’s?
Sadly, the rise in the right wing in politics is everywhere, also here in Argentina with Macri. Pray for us too 😫
Bear hug from Spain 🙁
We’re going to need a lot more than love. Not only is Trump in, but we have a majority Republican Senate AND Congress. God help us.
I found out at 3:00 am this morning, and when I went back to sleep I had the WORST, most vivid nightmare.
Oh, and there goes the value of our dollar. Great for foreign guest shopping sprees, but awful for the country.
What was the nightmare?
@Pimmscup – couldn’t reply directly to you, so here goes: I was outside the Hilton (I’m in NY) and my cousin (apparently visiting from Scotland) and I went in to a screening session of a new movie. This is bizarre, but who walked in but Trump. He was inviting all of us to his victory party. The movie showing suddenly became a Trump propaganda thing and I turned to the cousin and said “we’re outta here”. On the way going out, through throngs of people coming in, we got separated. I was outside waiting for her when a large, tall man appeared and said simply “you” and then threw a tarp over me, lifted me up, and was carrying me into a building while, and this was the terrifying horrible part, that I was going to be raped. By more than one. I was screaming so much that my voice went hoarse. For the police, for help. And he just moved effortlessly along. Then, I’m Catholic, I started saying the Hail Mary and then thankfully I woke up.
Are you into dreams? Cause this one was a doozy. I’ve been awake since.
Oh Cokatie, I sympathize! I wouldn’t let myself look at the news until 0630 because I knew it would f*ck my sleep up. My mood has been shitty today for sure however!!!
GoKatie,
I’m sorry about such a horrid nightmare- I do understand the scream that can’t be heard in dreams. You have been bombarded by so many campaign ads I can imagine how awful to see a propaganda film, much less the horror that came after. Obviously you have been keeping up on politics this whole election cycle.
Some people in the world might deride religion, I don’t. It’s an integral part of you, and I’m glad your belief woke you up.
This whole campaign has been a monster, awakening fears in everyone. All I can suggest is your faith and “This, too, shall pass.” I know it sounds flippant, but it’s only four years. Four years may seem like a long time, but at least it’s not eight.
And some means of self defense learning in the meantime, so awful things don’t happen for real.
Well, love and hugs from France to you, American Celebitches… And I’m afraid my country’s going to deal with a similar situation in a few months…
Canadian here – I am so sorry for the way this turned out. Come to Canada, we’ll welcome you with open arms. The Canadian Immigration website actually crashed due to the overwhelming number of people now desperate to move here. The glass ceiling has now become a lead ceiling. Misogyny and xenophobia now rule the day. Good luck Trumpettes with the new regime….you’re going to need it. A reality show buffoon and a porn model now rule your future.
Angela Merkel warned Trump that “any close cooperation between the two countries must be based on shared democratic values”, and reminded him of the global responsibility he carries. “Germany and America must share the values of democracy, freedom, respect for the rule of law and human dignity, regardless of origin, skin colour, religion, gender, sexual orientation or political belief.”
I think there will be a long line of global leaders reading from the same page.
Is it too early in the day to start to drink?
My heart bleeds for you, America. Very sorry for your loss. The world is a lot scarier now. Wishing all you lovely, levelheaded, intelligent Celebitches all my luck for the next 4 years.
Thank you, MissBB. I have no words to express the utter disappointment and shame I feel towards the majority of my fellow Americans who chose hate over unity and common decency. It’s like we’ve let the entire world down with this election.
The pendulum swing is swift and bloody this political season. The US will survive but it won’t be pretty.
Thank you! And, thank you for not laughing at us for this CLOWN winning the election. i refuse to call him the ‘P” word.
He was right about one thing, this election was most definitely RIGGED!!!
Rigged. Right! Glad to hear I’m not the only one thinking that! Lots of money has changed hands that’s for sure. I am a clinician and I, honestly, have nothing to give my clients today. I am an empty, embarrassed vessel. Calgon, take me away! I am despondent. The future looks very bleak.
You’re right, numb is the correct word. It’s still shocking and I’m overwhelmed and embarrassed. I’d like to focus on the positive though so if anyone feel threatened or uncomfortable in the Bay Area, I’m here to hang out. Strength in numbers, right?
Hey Miffy. Up and feeling horrible in SF. Feels like we live in a bubble, doesn’t it? at least pot’s now legal. I’m dreading telling my daughters about trump in the morning.
Here in the Bay Area too, although I’m in East Bay, and a after Comey released the letter about HIllary’s emails, there were Trump supporters out rallying in force. Ugh. So as I look around, I know — even in the liberal SF Bay Area — that we have racist, misogynist bigots in large numbers. Even legal weed and Kamala Harris’ election as senator are very pale and cold condolences right now.
Another San Francisco dweller here. Even here in SF and CA, we need to gear up for future fights. We need to defend LGBTQ rights, women’s rights, disabled people’s rights, and immigrants’ rights everywhere we see them challenged. And we need to fight for all children to get a decent (at least!) education. We are in better shape, numbers-wise, in terms of people at least believing in these basic human rights, than many parts of the country, but we are not “safe.” California is a battleground too, and every state in the union will be, on all of these issues.
America what have you done. My only hope is that hell be impeached so soon for something hes done he wont make it to january.
Then Pence becomes president and he is WAY worse than Trump.
Yes. My conspiratorial mind wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if something happens to Trump and Neocon-man assumes the office.
He’s not worse. They’re equally terrible in different ways.
Yeah, I’ve gone round and round on this one for months now, trying to figure out which is worse. I do not doubt Trump will do something impeachment-worthy soon. Hell, he’s already crossed that line. And that leads to so many questions. Would republicans vote out their own? Part of me thinks Pence is more willing to toe the party line, so they’d want Trump out. But would they want that embarrassment on their party? Would they circle the wagons, so the party is not further tarnished with an impeachment? And then I wonder which is worse, Trump or Pence? As Kitten said, equally horrible in different ways.
+1,000
Pence is scarier than Trump because other Repubs actually take him seriously. Scary stuff.
I agree with Sea Dragon. I don’t know what could happen but I just have a gut feeling the intelligence community – (incl. GOP national security officials) which has spoken out many times against DT during the campaign – won’t make his presidency a smooth ride. They see him as a national security risk. Look at what Michael Hayden has already done (interview after interview) to warn the public against voting for him.
Impeachment is extremely unlikely. Presidents have been merrily violating the Constitution for decades by sending troops hither and yon without Congressional approval, and as my Congressman told me decades ago – the law is there, but there is no will to impeach. So Trump will certainly have free reign to do anything he wants. The only reason Bill Clinton was impeached for something so stupid as an affair was because they wanted to stop health care reform. Hillary was competent and like a dog with a bone, so she might have pulled it off in the 1990s and she did get some legislation passed that helped kids.
Tighten your belts and save your money and hide your draft-age children, it’s going to be a rough ride. I doubt that a volunteer military will be able to keep up with Trump’s military adventuring. And this time there will be no educational deferments and both your sons and daughters will be taken (that’s been planned for a long time). If Canada really wants to help – grant refugee status to anybody at risk of the draft. Start working on that NOW, Canadians.
Try to stay healthy because the first thing to get trashed will be the ACA and the insurance companies will have no limits on their ability to raise premiums and deductibles, re-establish low lifetime claims limits and pre-existing conditions clauses.
If your’re a senior citizen- be prepared for trashing of Social Security and Medicare, which have been in Republican sights for a long time for “privatization” and now they have the power to do it. If you have a job to supplement Social Security, hang on to it for dear life.
And if you’re a praying person – pray that some patriot in the military quietly disables Trump’s access to the nuclear codes.
JWoolman, so when Nixon was threatened with impeachment, which led to his resignation, I guess it must have been public and political pressure? I know a number of his administration staff went to prison.
This is what I don’t get, the disenfranchised working class who have swayed this are most likely going to be adversely affected by Trump and Repub policies. Healthcare changes, military interventions, market and financial instability.
I read this morning that some of the business policies that Drumpf wants to put through could increase the deficit, while at the same time he wants to get into a trade war with China. No wonder some GOP politicians were openly going against him.
Becky – I was in my 20s when Nixon resigned (widely assumed to avoid impeachment). It was a different era. I think people were really shocked. But today. when hackers do the same thing as the Watergate Burglars tried to do, people don’t even think it’s wrong. Maybe it’s the constant mixing with entertainment and information overload, but there’s more of an anything goes feeling now (except of course, Hillary’s e-mails…. An example of much ado about nothing but considered something because of the relentless screaming about it by people who wanted to neutralize her.
Even here people keep complaining about Hillary having “baggage” even though someone else has been piling that baggage on her. When lies are repeated often enough, they seem like common knowledge. Hillary actually is a reasonably ethical politician when you look at her record objectively. She has been investigated ad nauseam by people who passionately hate her and they still can’t find any evidence that she is a bad person. Obama, a man most people like and admire. knows her and has worked with her and recommends her highly. So does his well respected wife. But the Clinton neutralization campaign has gone on so long, ever since her efforts at health care reform in the 1990s, that the smears are assumed to be her “baggage” and so we aren’t supposed to be able to benefit from a hard working, competent Presidential candidate and have to settle for Orange Hitler.
jwoolman — I have a son who’s a freshman in college and last night one of my first thoughts was about getting him away from the draft that I fear is coming. Several weeks ago I started researching emigration to New Zealand, and I will do whatever it takes to get my kid away from the grasp of these scary men and their lust for war.
I keep thinking he’ll get impeached, quit, or something, as I just can’t see him actually doing the job for four years. Then again I didn’t see him even winning the primary so what the hell do I know? But every time I think about that, about getting him out of that office before four years is up, Pence looms like a dark shadow, waiting to seize power.
Holding out hope for that too… ugh. I can’t today. Just… ugh…
FLORC, I’ve missed you!
Vava!!! Missed you too!!! And so many of you guys!
Life got busy. And now this…Balls, right?
FLORC!!!!!!!!
♥ ♥ ♥
Kitten!!!!
+++++1.
I’m with you on that!
I am literally grief-stricken. I have not slept. I just got out of the shower, which was me standing under the faucet and sobbing my broken heart out. I’ve been crying since she conceded. I don’t know my country. This is honestly the one of the most painful experiences I’ve had in my life. I am devastated. I am scared.
To those of you who are not white, straight, and male:
I will fight for your rights until the day I die. This atrocity is the motivation we need to fight harder.
Those of you who aren’t American, please be gentle. Almost half of us did not vote for this man. This is not my America. I am in so much pain
Same here. I’ve been crying for hours. Unable to calm myself. Feeling sadness for potus and flotus. Especially for hills to be this close and not make it. I’m sad that as a country we are dumber and more racist and sexist than I wanted to admit. I’m sad for our economic growth, our poor, our sick who won’t have health insurance. I’m sad for the ignorant ass folks who believe what this man promised. Just…devastated
Sending you love. You deserve better. You do NOT deserve this. <3
I’ve been crying all night. This is going to shape our world in the worst possible way. I’m terrified for our future and at a loss for words to explain the deep, soul-shaking fear I feel.
Shambles, it’s an awful feeling I know – the one where news comes out of your country and it feels as though the rest of the world is looking at you personally and seeing all the things you are not. I have felt like that here in the UK every day since the June referendum. It bloody hurts.
We know these are all the things you are not. We do know this.
Don’t give up. Nothing is ever over. Disrupt, object, obstruct, oppose. Be loud.
How about..don’t give up. Start at your local political level and find a decent person you can believe in. How about-don’t stay awake all night crying in a shower. Start working at your state level. Work hard for the next four years so you have better choices than Platter Of Shit A or Platter of Shit B. Object-yes. Oppose, yes! But ffs, get it together and start figuring out a good plan to fix this.
I’m already organising, kri. But I’ve had three months. Give Shambles a day to mourn, at least!
Yeah.. I appreciate your sentiments, Kri. I’m already looking up ways to donate and volunteer to combat hatred and ignorance. However, I think on the actual day of the election I’m allowed to give myself some time to be sad about it
Thank you, Sixer. ❤️
@Kri, in addition to working a full time job, I am sole caregiver to a frail, advanced age elder. After a hospitalization late last year, she needs services to keep her healthy, active, and living in her own apartment (in my house but still her own space). It has taken me months to get those services in place and now, everything is threatened. Paul Ryan wants to abolish every program we are using and Trump will let him do it. I myself have been living with cancer and its aftermath. The ACA protects me but those protections are in jeopardy. I think of a friend who just underwent surgery for breast cancer paid for by the ACA, a severely disabled 4 year old cousin on a Medicaid waiver to pay for her constant healthcare needs and medical equipment, another cousin receiving treatment through the VA for PTSD from his service in Iraq. Paul Ryan, a man who had no problem wasting tax dollars on fruitless investigations of emails, plans to eliminate all these programs. I am overwhelmed. I am exhausted. I am disgusted and sick. But hey, I should be happy for some rich people who are going to get tax cuts and I can buy guns! Please don’t ask us to brush it off and get to work to change it. This is not my fault. I did not do this. I am fed up with the people who did do this. Today, I get to be sad. I get to be angry.
LP,
I’m with you. You deserve the time and space to mourn this tragedy, as do I. We did not do this. What I want to do is strangle every one of the 15,000 people in my generation who wrote in a f*cking dead gorilla and trusted the rest of us to cover their asses. 15,000 votes that could have changed this election.
@kri
Not all groups that Trump will attack can fight back. I know you were referring to American citizens, but immigrants or EU citizens in UK have no political representation on foreign soil, except consulates and embassies (who are quite happy to ignore us!).
A Trump or Brexit also influences/threatens rights of people who cannot defend themselves. I’ve had my rights cut off in one day and cannot afford (surely) a lawsuit against the British government for taking those rights off me.
Spare a thought for all disenfranchised and, if possible, fight for their rights too.
Hugs.
MY ex works at the ACLU. He said their servers crashed this morning with the surge in memberships and donations.
Your comment brought me tears. I’m not American but i m touched by this espacially the part about fighting for EVERYBODY rights.
Something should come out of this: the fight for equality should be brighter, stronger than ever. It doesn’t seem like It now but i believe we are getting there.
^^^^^^YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Same here, I’m crying now.
I’m not American either, but we should fight this.
For the first time in 46 years of life, I broke down sobbing because of an election result.
{{Hugs Cora}}
Same here Cora. Twice.
Me, too. And I was sobbing this morning and am trying to maintain composure now, while at work.
I haven’t slept either. I’m in a state of shock. I haven’t felt like this since my mother died. Everything feels hopeless.
Me too. I dragged my four kids ages four and under to go vote for HC in MI and frankly I’m pissed my state turned red for the first time since 1988 for this guy! I seriously just don’t understand any of this. How a man like that can win the presidency?! It feels like we are in the decline of civilization. I think I need to do a media blackout for the next week or I will loose it.
Same Jenns. Dead inside, feels like after the shock of my mother dying settled in to darkness. I feel gutted, completely hopeless.
Thank you so much for this. I feel the same way. I haven’t been able to sleep all night. I am shaken and sick to my core. I keep blaming myself. Could I have campaigned harder? Could I have made more phone calls for Hillary? Nothing prepared me for this. Sending you a virtual hug, we’ll get through this.
Literallyashambles, I hear you. Fitfully slept maybe an hour. Seriously thinking of calling in sick or going in but only half a day. As a woman why am I so shocked no, really? Don’t many of us experience sexism on a daily basis? But to have a man who only views us as sexual objects, wives or mothers with less rights than men as our new president is disheartening and shameful. This country is better than this and we have to evolve! If this isn’t a wake up call that we all need to be politically and socially active locally and advocate for women, this is a turning point. I’m numb now, but I refuse to lose my basic human rights that all the women and men fought for before me. This Nasty woman is not rolling over!
This is where I am right now. I did my freaking out on Friday in anticipation of a Trump win and feel surprisingly resigned and ready to fight and find a way to get through these next four years. I can’t let my kids feel that hope has been lost.
I’m honestly went to bed believing Hilary would win.
How could she not?
and I woke up and the world was insane.
Me too. I thought she was going to win by a landslide.
I don’t know how I can make it to work today. I just want to hide under my covers.
Right there with you my friend. I managed to hold off tears until this morning. I am going to be a wreck all day-I’m working on about three hours of sleep and I’m angry and depressed. I honestly don’t know how I am going to get through the day.
Oh Shambles. My heart is so heavy right now. I want to give you and all my other Celebitches a hug. Sending you love all the way from St. Kitts. Me and my co-workers have been talking about this all morning and we’re all just sickened that this man was elected.
I don’t even know what else to say at this point. Sigh.
Slept two hours. Broke down briefly last night and then recovered but still couldn’t sleep.
I am shocked, numb, horrified. I have so much to say but I feel unable to say it.
I feel betrayed by my country.
And I couldn’t wait to get to work so I could come here and grieve with you guys. Gah! Tearing up again.
Same Kitten. My heart feels like it has gone through a meat grinder. I had to watch my 68 year old father breakdown last night because he is terrified America is moving backwards. This is a man who grew up in the segregated south, he thought we as a people were past this.
His county proved him wrong.
Hugs, Marty ♥ ♥
Hugs to you guys.
I’m cried out. I have nothing left. Now though I’m starting to get angry. I just listened to commentary on the radio about how we need to come together as a nation, and think positively. No! We don’t. Don’t ask women, poc, the LGBTQ community, muslims, immigrants to feel positive about a man who openly assaults, degrades and dehumanizes us. A man who wants to rip up families and take away hard fought rights. I’m done with positive. I’m angry. I’m furious and now that the shock is sinking in it’s time to fight back. Fight back and say we won’t accept his radical agenda for us.
I am with you guys and I was so wrong. I feel so sad and empty and scared. I live in a country of racist & sexist a-holes. I knew but I didn’t think they were the majority. I really thought Trump was so obviously horrible that he wouldn’t appeal to my citizens.
My husband said “This is every woman’s worst fear. You work hard and are qualified and you lose to the most unqualified buffoon because he is a man”. I just wept.
Never underestimate how much you are hated.
Thank you so much for perfectly articulating how I feel and why this hurts me so deeply.
MC2, your husband really spoke the truth. Sadly, horribly, that is the truth of the US today. I will work as hard as I can to ensure that is not the truth for future generations. But it is the truth at this moment.
I took off of work today, because I needed a mental health day after hearing this clown won the election. WTF is wrong with this picture. We are all screwed now! Mark my words!
sending all my love from Canada. xo
Sending my love to American celebitches all the way from Nigeria. 2016 seems to be the year of having/electing dumb idiots as president…. My country Nigeria is in a shambles right now to the extent that the First Lady said if it continues this way then she won’t support her husband for a 2nd term. Our president was asked about this whole in Germany with
Angela Merkel and guess what he said… “I don’t know what she means… My wife belongs in my kitchen, sitting room and other room (bedroom)” That was the response a president gave while standing beside a female world leader. Y’all aren’t alone…
I have a feeling that lots of people only said they would vote Clinton so as not to appear racist but voted differently in the polling booth
That is astounding! Those two guys will have a lot in common.
I feel like we are living in a dystopian future.
Dystopian future has become reality. There’s a book called Hilter’s WIlling Executioners about how regular German citizens supported HIlter, and I’ve kept thinking about it through this election. My parents voted for Trump (they really voted for Pence because they’re bat-sh!t crazy evangelicals) and they fall directly into this category. I fear for all of us today, and hope we’re strong enough to overcome what has happened to our country.
wow, Scar that’s awful.
I feel ya. I am on the other side of the globe – Philippines. Earlier this year, my countrymen voted a misogynistic, racist, bigot, clown for a president and we have been cringing ever since. He won with the same tactic as Trump – CHANGE is good. It turned out change was not good.
Have you heard of him? The one who cursed the Pope, and called POTUS, son of a w***e.
Duterte has been in power for 5 months and he managed to undo 6 years of progress. A lot of us has been in mourning for the loss of democracy.
The world is changing for the worse.
2016 is the worst.
You stay safe, Miriam. I cannot imagine what it must be like to live with Duterte as my “leader.”
I am a Filipina American and I cannot believe that Duterte is running one of my countries and Trump is about to take charge of the other one. Cannot. believe. it.
Hi Scar,
Brit of Nigerian parents/origin here. I heard him make those comments on the news and couldn’t believe it. He was standing next to Angela Merkel in a press conference at the time!
I mean…….just………Wow!
Many of my family and friends stayed up to watch the coverage through the night, and we were convinced Hillary would be able to pull it out somehow. Turns out we had too much faith in our fellow American voters. I’m still in a state of shock over how this has played out. I just don’t have words for the way this feels, knowing we’ve elected Donald Trump president.
I’m really sorry, this feels like Brexit just a thousand times worse, is like to send hope and love to you all!
I’m sorry but he’s going to have to watch his back, cause I don’t think this’ll be taken lightly!
Maybe Brexit just numbed us for this? At least we had the relief of May becoming leader and not Gove or Johnson. I will not be able to vote for her whilst she supports grammar schools, but at least she is competent and fit to represent her country on an international stage. I really don’t envy her having and Merkel having to work with this sc*mbag.
Sadly, Jellybean, she is none of these things. She is a laughingstock in Europe, she holds far right views about foreign nationals and has no mandate to rule. She is even questioning the separation of government and the judicial system aka what a dictatorship is made of. And she just endorsed Trump. Shes dangerous and ruined her own party. Once the baby boomers die off, do the Tories seriously think that the younger generations they’ve shafted for years will vote for them? Jog on. She represents the far rights last stand against progress. Terrifyingly, they would rather go down in flames and take everyone with them than do the honorable and let forward thinking go in the correct direction.
On the spectrum of awfulness SpareRib, May is not as bad as Trump. She has not endorsed him, she has said what leaders usually say when someone’s elected. She has a mandate to rule: it’s not a presidential system, she has been chosen by the MPs as the leader of the governing party. But that’s where my defence of her ends. I loathe her party and all they stand for. Not as bad as Trump is damning with faint praise.
Pretty much agree about May, I don’t think she knows what she’s doing and she’s a traditional Tory and I’m sick and fed up of them and their stupid anti-EU crap.
When she was voted leader I was hopeful, but that hope is going while she pussy-foots around trying to stop Parliament debating article 50.
However she had to be diplomatic in her statement about Trump, she’ll have to work with his administration to get that trade deal, and she appears to be more intelligent and not a crazy narcissist.
Oh US CB chums, I am so sorry! Please take heart. This is not going to break you, it is going to make you stronger.
The western world is lurching to the right. I think we should all buckle up, it’s going to be a hell of a bumpy ride for the next decade.
As a colleague has just jokingly said to me, when you are in a pub quiz in 20 years time and the question starts with ‘in what year’ the answer is always going to be ‘2016’.
You know in history lessons when you’re covering a war or a big crisis, and your essay has, as its first section, “Factors leading to…”?
I feel like we are in the middle of factors leading to…
Yes, Sixer. I do as well.
🙁
Wow! I was taking with my husband this morning and that is EXACTLY what I said …. don’t forget our history and the factors that lead …… to the rise of the Nazi party and the election of Hilter as Chancellor.
Yes, Sixer, we are right smack in it. We know the factors that have led up to this, have been screaming about them in dismay and disbelief, yet reason and sanity in this instance did not prevail. I have to believe it eventually will though or I don’t think I could go on.
You’ve just got to keep fighting, Esmom. On local levels, on interpersonal levels. Don’t let the election result silence you. I believe in you and all the lovely women on here.
My god yes, me too
YES, Sixer.
Man….I keep typing things and then deleting them. I’m just at a loss for words. I don’t think I can properly convey the overwhelming feeling of dread that I have.
That’s exactly what I feel right now. To all the people saying the talks of WW3 and nuke attacks were far-fetched – they are not. These are very frightening times.
Honestly, we’re way past the factors and have arrived at the big event. For months I’ve been telling everyone around me “Don’t be so naive.” and this morning they all claimed “Well, I sort of called it.” No. No you didn’t. And now they’re all “Well, let’s see how he works before we panic.” I’m sorry but I’m way past panicking already. I’m into “So this is how it starts.” waiting for Germany and France to get this over with next year. It won’t be pretty either. I’m calling THAT right now. Oh and that Brexit sh*t we have to deal with too. The western world is losing its mind but historically speaking, we’re due. *puts on seatbelt*
I know people say this all the time but today was the nail in the coffin of me having kids. I was always on the fence (for many reasons) but I just don’t see the next 20 years in an optimistic light. I have never cried over a f*cking election but this morning I could barely hold it together.
Totally agree Sixer, it is more important than ever now to fight for what we believe in so that fascism does not creep in through the back door.
I am waiting for Keith Olbermann’s GQ blog post in the hopes of being cheered up somewhat today. It truly is a sad day.
@LittleMissNaughty-I hear you so much on the kids front. What kind of a world are we creating for them?
@ littlemissnaughty
I fear for what is going to happen in Germany and France too. Brexit and now the USA elections will embolden those on the right.
Are we now going to start seeing right-wing policies following these results? Yes. In Britain, I had such hope for Theresa May, but she has moved so far right that I barely recognise her. I am never going to vote blue again.
I said this on yesterday’s post but I’ll say it again… if Marine le Pen wins next year in France, which she might well, the UN Security Council’s permanent member countries will have these leaders:
Trump
Putin
May
le Pen
Xi Jinping
With Xi Jinping being the only one who could rationally be described as even halfway sensible.
Exactly sixer, that’s exactly what it feels like to me and I’m bloody terrified of what we are walking straight into…if Brexit was the starting gun, this result is the sprint towards potential disaster…
Well, Sixer, when you put it like that … f*ck me. I’m getting drunk tonight.
When the Chinese guy – no offense to the Chinese but come on – is our only hope, we might as well pack it in now.
Le Pen might VERY well win. Germany has a massive problem because there is no strong leader except Merkel and she might not run again. But there is nobody who could rally people behind them which means the AfD will have free reign. They’ve swept several state elections already. I don’t think they stand a chance when it comes to an absolute majority but that’s not necessary in our system. They might still be one of two or three parties to form the government.
Ok Sixer, please stop frightening us all with that list! Bloody scary.
I don’t think France will vote for Len Pen (I pray!), I think they will vote for Sarkozy but like Theresa May, he has move from centre right to right in his party. So yes, France will be moving right.
littlemissnaughty, it is extremely unlikely that the conservatives and socialdemocrates lose so many votes that they wouldn’t be able to form a coalition. Super unlikely.
@littlemissnaughty: My spouse and I jumped off the fence a few years ago, but last night as the dreadful results rolled in, I felt a huge wave of relief that I do not, and never will, have my own children. I will fight to make this world a better place for future generations, but I will not introduce a new being into this sh*tshow.
Valois, you mean in France?
Italy has a referendum in one month.
If No wins, there will be early general elections.
So the domino effect is likely to affect Italy before France and Germany.
Yup, Sixer.
I can’t deal. I’m numb and sick.
Australian here: I felt physically a bit ill this afternoon watching the count come in. This won’t sink in for many weeks I don’t think…
Pretty disappointed in a lot of states right now. Misogyny has deep roots – so deep that people come up with every excuse under the sun to explain it away.
America wasn’t ready for a female POTUS. Maybe next time.
To me one of the saddest results of the night suggested that 53% of women voted for Trump, with white women primarily responsible. Also, not as many younger women (18- 30) voted for Clinton. Sexism was a factor here but it’s not the whole story.
very sad about the outcome, but was prepared to be disappointed after seeing these maps some weeks ago,
https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/800/1*RKfZQO1XeIFnF_xBnEIWyQ.jpeg
there was no way Hillary could win. at least she accepted her defeat graciously. imagine the other way.
on a funny note, it didn’t look like trump was happy to become a president when he came on stage. reality just hit him. no more fear mongering and riling people. sh!t just got real. his balls are in the vise and he’ll have to walk the talk.
I have to believe that many of the votes for Trump were truly votes against Hillary. The relentless anti-Clinton lies and propaganda, decades in the making, have been unbelievably effective. I’m thinking now that had a different candidate — Joe Biden comes to mind — been the nominee, Trump would have been trounced.
Alexa: Sexism within women is real and alive. Most likely derived from the pressures and influences of their environment and society in general but still real.
Unfortunately, there are women who are sexist and not only do not want to challenge the status quo, they don’t think you should either.
What is even worse (if that’s possible) and to partially quote Lizzie, some of them seem to have “been programmed into thinking they have to fit in with the patriarchy to be able to win” only perpetuating said patriarchy while destroying any status quo female challenger around and protecting their own interests (such as bullying in a professional level/environment)
However, of course there other contributing factors and reasons why women have voted and support Trump such as class, ethnicity and racism, xenophobia etc…
The Bernie Factor. Too many young people to whom I spoke were upset that Bernie, in their eyes, didn’t get a fair deal. I don’t know know why he didn’t run fourth party as a Socialist.
The younger people became disgruntled. It seemed as if they had no voice.
Pimms, I get that impression from what I’ve read also, but would Sanders have won against Trump? Personally I don’t think so, much as I would have wanted him to, he was too left for the swing voters.
Maria- Yes, yes, yes. There are so many women in this nation that succumb to men. I watched a nice video of a Trump guy calling someone the N word and then when his wife joined in he yelled at her to ‘be a woman!’. That woman voted for Trump and all her kind did too, the self hating heathens. Women are mistreated by men everyday and start to believe that they are less then. That woman needs the protection from other men (this is the racist part) by their ‘alpha males’ and if their ‘alpha males’ were weak then who would protect them?
And women by into rape culture as just the way nature is- men are going to be this way so who the hell cares if Trump said it. Their men are like that, they think ALL men are like that. My man is not like that but they will never listen. They take a beating (literally) and think there is no other way.
As January Jones said to Don Draper “Honey- who are we voting for again?”
What a sad day 🙁 sending lots of love to you guys
United States and United Kingdom. United…just split pretty much in half.
I will respect the choice of the voters. I will not respect those who did not vote. Anyway nothing much to say anymore, sending peace, safety and love to ALL Americans.
Hmmm… maybe the other halves of each country should get together?
@elle good idea!!
Michelle Obama 2020!!!!
Judge Judy might stand a better chance given America just voted in a REALITY TV HOST to be the leader of their country. You’d laugh if the ramifications weren’t so dire.
… I would have voted Judge Judy over trump.
This result is both surprising and not so surprising. Reality ‘stars’ and an unwillingness or inability to sift through 24/7 information for facts led to this.
Which ‘celebrity’ will be preparing to run in 2020? No experience required, after all.
Sending you love from France .
I know that you will recover ,America , because you are better than your new POTUS.
This election won’t break you down.
On a lighter note ,I pray the white house will not be “Trumpified”!!
A trumpified White House would be a sight to behold! Not in a good way.
I wonder if many of the female staffers (?) at the WH will jump ship before he arrives.
Good question Spidey.
I wouldn’t feel comfortable as a female/gay/non-white/muslim staffer at the WH with Trump as POTUS…
Depressed American overseas voter here. What a stunning loss for Hillary Clinton and all Americans who stand to lose so much from a Trump presidency. The only glimmer of hope I’m clinging to is that Trump was feeding the beast whatever it wanted in order to get elected. Once in office, maybe the truth will be that he’s actually a social moderate, fiscal conservative rational New York businessman who isn’t hellbent on pressing any ideology on the country. He isn’t a religious zealot like the Bush born-agains. His only God is the dollar bill and everything else is up for grabs. Who knows?!
If you think that, read about the new VP, Mike Pence. It will dissuade you of any notion that Trump isn’t exactly what he says he is, and will try to do exactly what he said he would.
He showed the US who he is, and they wanted it. There is no “underneath” trump. 🙁
UK here, but the only positive I could come with for you, from my limited perspective, is that if Clinton had been elected, she would have been so under fire and have so much opposition from Congress, that she would have really struggled to achieve much at all. Failure by the first female president would then have been used against other women for generations. It is not much I know.
It’s something, Jellybean. Thank you for being a light.
I thought about that while coming to work today. I don’t think it would have been a peaceful post-election, re: his supporters, had she won.
I hear what you’re saying, Deens. I think you’re right. As a guy who ran as for a marketing boost, Trump is going to be in so far over his head. Pence is the one to be worried about. We just have to hang on, work to preserve the rights of all those they’d hope to diminish, and get through these next four years.
Have you ever read Paul Ryan’s policy views on anything? That is what Congress will now be passing and putting on the President’s desk and Trump will sign. Goodbye Planned Parenthood, good-bye voting rights. Good-bye, Medicare. Good-bye, Social Security. Good-bye, Medicaid. Good-bye, clean air and clean water protections. Good-bye Equal Employment Opportunity Act and hello discrimination on the basis of race, gender, religion, age, and disability in the workplace and housing. They are not only going to roll back everything Obama did; they will roll back everything accomplished post-World War II.
This. I know people mean well but I just can’t with the “it’s going to be ok…”
It’s not ok.
It won’t be ok.
LightPurple-we can be proud of Massachusetts and thankful to NH for getting rid of Ayotte. Our state did the right thing–ballot questions passed (or not) appropriately and we stayed true blue. Small consolation but I’m reaching for anything right now.
Heavens, this is depressing!
And the kicker is that most of those white people – especially the rural ones – who voted overwhelmingly for Trump are on SS, Medicaid, etc. and they are going to get hammered. But they’ll still find a way to blame it on immigrants, blacks, etc., anything but the Republican President, the Republican House, and the Republican Senate.
Stacey — this is what kills me — these folks vote against their own interests every time they vote for a republican. My parents voted for Trump yesterday yet they rely on SS and Medicare and need it to get by financially — clueless white people who are truly low information voters and don’t believe facts.
@Kitten, yes, I am very proud of our state and if that lazy, unethical, thieving scum Kelly Ayotte is gone then I can be thankful for that. But we are too small to secede, which I REALLY want to do right now. I am truly scared.
That is what I believe will happen. I’ve seen it before firsthand where I live: radical leftist discourse during elections, but once they were won, the candidate gravitated towards the center-left spectrum. He had overwhelming parliamentary support, but he saw that, as we say around here, the hole is deeper than he thought. Radical attitudes would actually f*ck the country way past what he thought was acceptable, so to speak.
My sympathies, fellow American Celebitches. You will prevail. This is the time to stand your ground.
Not only will America fuck themselves up, they will be a fucking DANGER to the ENTIRE PLANET because of your “president”. You and your stupid politics that makes you 50 years late than the rest of the world with healthcare, education and paid paternity leave. And your guns… GUNS… Just the fact that somone voted the Orange (I refuse to call him the president of the USA, to me – he will ALWAYS be “The Orange”) who looooove guns and doesn’t believe in climate change into the most powerful position in the world… just… just… Fuck, how STUPID are you? (NOT all of you, I know there are maaany decent people over there <3 But look how the majority voted -.-). Oh, what I would do to have BERNIE 2020…
Im sending you all love. I KNOW you are better than this, you deserve better!!!!!! <3 You will get through this. Love.
So much thiisssss!
I did my part. My state did their part. But as a white American, I am so saddened that half our country is so racist that they could ignore all Trump’s nonsense in order to promote their white America. I am disgusted that people are secretly OK with Trumps ridiculous made up lies to make any of his opponents look bad, that they are OK with Trump demeaning other races, and women, and the disabled and … if they were so bold as to disagree with him, that they are OK with the fact his policies were thought of as damaging to our country by almost every expert, and that even with young women in college in fear of being raped, these women still supported a man who is a sexual predator.
I was getting updates all day and actually swore in front of my toddler when it was pretty clear that trump was in. I got a lot out of this daily beast post regarding America and how it has survived bad leadership before; I just pray the damage in lives and human rights, don’t bare the brunt of it.
http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/11/09/how-the-daily-beast-will-stand-up-to-president-donald-trump.html
I Didn’t think America was racist, sexist and stupid enough to vote in that clown. I stand corrected.
Decent people everywhere are hurting today.
It’s one of the worst days of my life. There aren’t words to express what I’m feeling. I deleted my Facebook account. I want to write off friends and family who voted for him. I’m terrified. I’m distraught. I’m embarrassed that more than half of us are ignorant and/or deplorable people. I laid in bed clutching to my husband feeling terrified. I’m at work crying silently at my desk. I broke the news to my 6 year old daughter and tried to sound like everything would be okay, I don’t want her to be scared. My teenager didn’t go to school. She was devastated. I don’t know how to feel okay.
So true. I wonder how much worse climate change is going to get and how many innocent people are going to get killed just because people thought it was more important to be white than human.
Both Trump and Pence are scientifically illiterate. I know Trump doesn’t believe climate change is a problem, wouldn’t be surprised if Pence felt likewise. Yippee.
DEPRESSED. SAD. DRINKING A BEER AT 3 AM. ALL CAPS.
OH AMERICA. WHEN DID WE BECOME ‘MURICA??
I need someone to hold me. And then tell me it was all just a bad dream. What is that Ramone’s song “I want to be sedated?” That is my current mood. I fear for all of us. It feels like 2000, a grim bleak day.
I’m here for you!
I woke up this morning hoping I would find out that we’d all just been punk’d last night and HRC really had been elected President. Unfortunately I was wrong again….
I’m inconsolable
Inconsolable over here too.
Count me in too. I’m signing off to move today, much love to all the Celebitches. You were the most sane empathetic parts of this crazytown tire fire of an election. I’m heartened that you are out there, thinking like me, crying like me, grieving like me. Grieving for the lost chances and lost hopes for all women and minorities.
I just keep hoping there’s something more.
Maybe I’m just being naive, but I keep hoping there’s something going on here. It all just seems too easy. The “Mr. Brexit” quote, the FBI…
Something is rotten in the state of Denmark
Yes, it will be interesting to watch Mr Comey’s future career and personal life.
Oh I’m convinced the milk is spoilt y’all. Between leaked emails and interference from Russia, the FBI and the far right Old boys club, this was a coup. I have no doubt more and more evidence will come to light showing just how much underhanded and illegal shenanigans were going on. Stay strong my Nasty sisters we are needed now more than ever!!@
is it possible it’s “rigged?” we’ve entered a twilight zone. a reality tv bozo is now our president. america, you done stupid.
I actually turned to my husband last night and said “were we hacked by Russia?! This can’t be true???” I wasn’t joking.
Wow, we women have no hope.
Even when we are better in every way (educated, experience, hard work, working for our communities) we still cannot win.
What do we have to do?
women need to stop having children with assholes and start realizing that they identify with their oppressor. self-worth, sex-ed and access to a doctor, that’s what young women need. and maybe a self-defense class.
“What do we have to do?”
Not be corrupt like Hillary Clinton?
Lolz really? Even if she was “corrupt”, because Trump is the embodiment of correctness….just don’t.
Not be crazy, corrupt nutjob like Trump? Who thinks global warming is a Chinese conspiracy?
Jeez.
@ Erika
Are you serious?? The groper-in-chief is the better option for your nation? Wow…!
She has been dragged & called “corrupt” by the men in power for 30 years. She used to be the outsider and the crazy liberal but then they turned her into the ‘man’ after 8 years of Obama to try to appeal to young liberals into not voting her her & voting ‘their conscience’. She is not corrupt, never was and nothing in her emails found that she was- in fact, they proved that she wasn’t. Some liberals drank the koolaid and are now laying with the devil but so am I and I am pissed at them for being so selfish. Hope you had fun voting your conscience idiots that didn’t vote against a Hitler when you had the chance. F- you Susan Surandon!
According to your new leader, you are either a vagina or you’re ugly. Congrats.
Not today, Satan, not today…
Are you fantasizing about your glorious leader grabbing your p$ssy?
I have been reading Celebitchy for many many years but never commented on a story until now.
I feel absolutely sick to my stomach that Trump won the election. I just don’t understand. How can someone so openly sexist, racist and elitist be chosen by a majority of people? I really don’t understand. I feel extremely sad as a woman that so many Americans seem to go out of their way to avoid a woman president. I can not understand why women, minority groups,… have voted for this orange gnome. As a European I’m very scared for the future and how this is going to impact Europe and the rest of the world. A sad day indeed.
I’ve said this elsewhere but I think everyone really underestimated the depth and breadth of anti-Clinton sentiment. The right wing conspiracy against her and Bill has been flourishing for decades and I feel like this election was less about voting Trump in than keeping Hillary out.
Ann, your words are heart-felt and your despair comes through clearly.
I am Canadian but I have a sister/brother-in law & nieces in the U.S. Their state went GOP for the first time in a long time, and last night I confirmed with my sister that she voted Trump as she told me months ago was her intention. She heard my disappointment and tried to explain, but Listening to her and watching the devastating numbers on my TV screen, I was just in disbelief. She trailed off because she knew I wasn’t really processing her words.
I’m still in shock.
Switzerland here… I so feel you @Ann
I just can’t wrap my head around what this world has become to. I feel so hated and disrespected.
To be fair, Clinton actually won the popular vote. So the majority of Americans voted for her. Not by much, but still.
I’m very sorry for us all. Trump won’t win the popular vote and this election ended up very close in lots of places so we know that the majority of voters did not want this.
The market will be hit pretty heavy and might not recover easy as the Fed has few options left to intervene. Hopefully 2018 will flip the house again and 2020 will be the beginning of end of fear, misogyny and racism.
Felt very sad for you all today as we watched it happen from afar. And so astonished.
So sorry 🙁
Saw this on twitter today and it seems appropriate:
“now I understand why all the cool people died this year”
I checked my phone at 4am while checking on Mini Lindy and i couldn’t go back to sleep. It was like a nightmare. Much love to all the US CBs x
Imagine Obama now knowing all of his work will now be undone. And Michelle knowing that fembot hasnt the intelligence or drive to continue anything.
Van Jones 💗
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/van-jones-shares-impassioned-reaction-election-cnn-was-a-white-lash-945639
Congrats on the Mini Lindy, if I remember correctly Mini is a new addition to the CB family.
Feeling sick to the core here in Ireland, I don’t know if it has sunk in yet really, just shocking.
Sending good vibes your way America, you deserve better.
WTF AMERICA?!
You elect an orange faced, chauvinistic, bigoted, egotistical, climate-denying fuckwit as your president and inflict him on us as the leader of the free world?
Go home America…you’re drunk 😔
I’ve never understood why people call the US President “the leader of the free world”. Really, who voted on that?!? Our Presidents are elected based on entirely internal concerns (and the phase of the moon, as you’ve seen). They don’t even have to know where your countries are (Reagan and Trump are examples of the geographically challenged). Trump doesn’t even understand how our own government works. He would fail a high school civics class and he has the attention span of a gnat, so I don’t expect him to learn much very fast.
I think liberal classism had more to do with Clinton’s loss than sexism. Constantly telling working class people that they’re uneducated idiots isn’t really the best way to win hearts and minds This election was the anti-establishment election and Clinton is the personification of the establishment. Sanders would’ve been a better candidate.
Trump won over college educated voters as well.
Just not the smug liberal ones, eh?
White male college educated and they have always been in the bag for the Republican candidate. In the end he won (narrowly) because he managed to fire up working class whites and they showed up to vote for him in numbers comparable to Reagan’s. But as a voting block they have only one election left in which they are the largest block. In 2024 43% of the electorate will be millenial and post-millenial and these voters skewer extremely towards the democrats.
“In 2024 43% of the electorate will be millenial and post-millenial and these voters skewer extremely towards the democrats.”
Once those voters hit their 30s and 40s and have a spouse, children, and a mortgage to worry about, they’ll vote Republican just like their parents did last night. That’s how it has always worked.
30% of white millennials backed Trump yesterday. That’s a larger number than thought and it speaks to how badly the Democrats misread the mood of the nation.
I’m British so I’m not going to pick and choose candidates for someone else’s country. But I did say on yesterday’s thread that it’s becoming very, very clear that late 20th century soft left liberalism is not going to beat early 21st century far right populism. The latter is on the rise everywhere, not just in the US and Britain.
We on the progressive side have got to come up with new answers. And fast.
Agreed. The stunned team on PBS was talking about this last night. I think of the young adults I know who won’t let this outcome deter them and will use this horrific lesson to turn things around. Starting today.
Completely agree, very well said. I think this was the perfect storm of the angry white male fighting back, apathetic millenial voting, low minority turnout, an anti-establishment f- you to the entrenched politicians, and a little bit of a reaction to Obamacare.
PBS had some enlightening commentary on it late last night as it looked all but certain Trump would win. There’s a lot of anger that has been unacknowledged that got it’s voice last night. Anger over trade agreements resulting in lost jobs, anger over diminishing religious freedoms and general frustration with the economy and the shrinking middle class.
I’m just hoping that all the horrible things that he said during his campaign were more “political theater” than resolutions to turn back the clock 50 years. We need to take care of the marginalized and disenfranchised more than ever and make our voices hear locally and nationally to steer the ship into calmer waters.
Agreed.
Kyrgios… This is what I think too. I even underestimated the dislike people had for Hillary. Not to mention the people that felt Sanders got cheated. I know people that said they would never vote Democrat again over that debacle.
My friends all voted Johnson. My family all voted Trump.
Do please enlighten me as to WHEN did Clinton call anyone and Uneducated idiot?
She never did. People of all sorts actually like her when they get to talk with her. She knows how to listen, which is respectful. But the Republicans and the media kept calling her unlikeable and the lie stuck. I think a man with the same background and qualifications would have been perceived very differently.
I feel sorry for you, fellows! We have a fascist incompetent president in my country since last year and things have got worse in every area so I know what you’re going through. But it’s the democracy game and the majority has spoken. Let’s hope for the best! Love from Arg!
As someone from a country who has had a fascist, misogynistic, corrupt, vile little orange creature for president, I just want to incourage you to keep fighting for equality and respect for others and don’t think “we’ll make this right in 2020” because the damage people like Trump and Berlusconi make STAYS.
So true! In Italy we’re still paying for the damage done by the Orange Bunga Bunga one
Did The Democratic Party suffer from the fact that their President didn’t have a majority in the Senate so couldn’t push the party’s policies through as he/they wanted which caused disenchantment? I asked this on the last thread and @Silver Unicorn didn’t think so.
So different from the UK system when the Party members elect their leader and the PM comes from the Party with the most seats.
Did others have problems with disappearing posts on the last thread?
YES! People this morning keep talking about how Obamacare caused people to be pissed off at dems. But it wasn’t the plan Obama wanted and it was not HRC’s plan. Obama pushed it through the GOP who were in power and beat the living hell of it. The GOP pummeled it, made it nearly unrecognizable but let it live and then called out how ugly it was. They played chess and won this round. Damn it.
I replied to your post and got lost!
Probably too many comments and the website cannot process them all.
I feel so rejected. I feel like I don’t fit it in my country. I am a Mexican-American first generation immigrant woman who is college educated and has an accent. I am a woman in corporate America who does a better job than my male counterparts and still get paid less. The feeling of not belonging in my home country and in my adopted country breaks my heart. I am scared to speak in Spanish in public, I am scared to somehow/somewhat showcase my culture in any way. Those dreams of finishing my MBA and shattering glass ceilings left and right seem further away. The fact he won is not the saddest thing, the saddest thing is that half of our country really is racist, sexist, xenophobe. I feel shocked, scared, but mostly rejected.
Trump lost me almost immediately with his hostility towards Mexican immigrants. I’m in Texas and love our mix of cultures.
Oh, honey, don’t stop. Keep on striving. I don’t mind native spanish speakers, helps me work on my Spanish. You do you, and f@ck anybody that doesn’t like it. Dont let ignorant people stop you from reaching for the sky. Cause if you do, they won, and f@ck that. You’re awesome, be the best you can be. You just might inspire someone else
@Ostone
Do it for yourself. Don’t look for motivation outside you, but within you. I’m finishing my studies as well and by the time I do, the United Kingdom will have cut my rights off. I also feel a foreigner now and never spoke a word of Italian in public since June.
Big hugs from another rejected one. Be strong!
I am worried for my sister and her husband who are in US for work and were planning on extending their visas for another year. I fear for their safety! And they live in Texas no less.
hahahahahh i wish i were dead
I’m afraid.
I wish I could say nice words, send love and well wishes. but, americans just prove true the worst image the rest of the world have of them. The lowest, basest, crassest.
I wish I could close my eyes and say that it’s your choice and your problem. But the world is too small.
I see racism, sexism and hates being legitimized and legalized. I remember my history lessons and I foresee wars.
I’m afraid.
And angry. And scornful. So finally, that’s all there was to America ?
You forgot classism. And it’s only now that you foresee wars? America has been involved in wars for 22 of the last 25 years.
More wars. Bigger wars. WW3.
+1
Absolutely, this is a problem for the whole world. Things can get out of hand easily, and they we’ll all pay the price.
Much, much love to all you Celebitchies. I’m not American but still feel utter despondency at this result as I’m sure this will have a disastrous impact globally. The far right has risen world wide and we know from history that this cannot end well.
Fuck.
I can’t believe that my small conservative country from Europe has female president and USA just elected The Orange man as president over HRC!! I was so sure that HRC will win…what will happen now to women and their rights? To immigrants? I guess Slovenia just got their first lady in USA … I really did’t believe that this could happen… I am shocked… WTF America
So feel for American women in this horrible moment – love and sympathies from Australia
you dont need to feel sorry for the white women who made it possible for trump to get elected.
Yeah, that was the most surprising and depressing piece of this nightmarish puzzle.
I think they will start to care when planned parenthood is defunded and there are hardly any abortion providers anymore.
They will start to care when the programs that serve their parents and grandparents like Medicare, Medicaid, Meals on Wheels, ride programs are eliminated and they have to provide those services and/or pay for those services, including housekeeping and companion services or nursing home care themselves. And they will be eliminated that has been Paul Ryan’s plan for years and now there is nobody to stop him.
Agree with all this. The women I talked to who voted Trump did it for economic reasons and terrorism/immigration fears.
Planned Parenthood is pretty much dead in the water. Trump will get to appoint as many as 4 Supreme Court justices who will overturn Roe v Wade. Trump’s VP, Pence, thinks women who miscarry should be investigated and prosecuted and forced to hold funerals for their fetuses. The hardcore Republicans are against birth control, fertility treatments, etc.
These women who voted Trump have set this country back decades. They should be ashamed of the country they will be handing their children and grandchildren but they aren’t.
Okay I have been a republican for years, I had my laugh when democrats voted for Bush. But this election even as a republican I must call out other republicans who were idiots for voting Trump. You laughed at Bush but you picked someone worser, oh the irony. Although I am a republican I was not as stupid as you, I was not going to vote for a brainless Lumpa Lumpa. Even though I don’t agree with Hillary 100% she was a better candidate based on facts not yourbstupid logic. I will keep all my receipts of the presidency of Trump and the minute I hear any of the republicans I know complain rest assured I will give them hell/never let this down.
I already have my t-shirt slogan…Don’t blame me, I voted for her. Humor is the only thing that will get me through right now. I’m done crying. I’m going to start today to get back the House and Senate by 2018.
Yeah, numb and empty sums it up for me too. I haven’t really processed it completely I think. Reality really is stranger than fiction because if this was just a plot line in some TV show, I would laugh it off as ridiculous.
And while I know this election is so much larger than the candidates, I really feel for Hillary right now. No, she wasn’t ‘entitled’ to be president, as some of the repugs accused her of thinking, but the woman poured her heart and soul into this effort. She did it by working, really working, instead of ad-libbing, race baiting and spouting claptrap non stop. It’s like hard work and dedication is a bad thing nowadays – having nuanced opinions and engaging in reflection is a sign of being part of the ‘disconnected elite’. This is a society that awards ignorance and indifference – he couldn’t even be bothered to prepare for the debates, or get together a set of solid policy proposals yet he’s skated his way to the presidency. That’s disturbing on so many levels.
Yes I am devastated for her personally as well. I liked her and believed in her message, thought she was more than qualified for the job, and withstood trump with class and dignity.
Yes yes and yes.
Yes, it’s not just that I didn’t want him for president, but I really wanted Hillary. I’ve admired her since she was First Lady & really, really wanted to see her elected our first woman president. And now it’s too late, just too damn late. I’m tearing up now.
Last night my brother sent me a pic of his fiancée and her dog wearing Nasty Women gear-her in a t-shirt and the dog in a scarf.
I said “YES you guys voted for HRC?” His reply was “abso-fucking-lutely. And not as a vote against Trump either, I’m legitimately excited for her to be president.”
My reply was “Same. I voted for one of the most qualified presidential candidates we’ve seen in years.”
Sigh. How did this happen, you guys??
Yeah, people were criticizing her for not speaking to her supporters last night but I can only imagine the anger and shame she felt by losing to the orange turd. I can only imagine how heartbroken and saddened she was that she had to concede. I don’t know if she will recover from this.
Hillary’s been my candidate since 1992. I’ve been waiting for her to have her moment in the sun for sooooooo long. I’m sick and sad and heartbroken today. But I know that Hillary is tougher than I am — she will stand strong through this monstrous presidency and I will still be with her.
This is not funny. It’s terrible. I am so sad and feel as if my country hates me.
yes, me too. Feels like the worst nightmare.
They’re already selling souvenirs of putin’s puppet in Russia.
I’m in a state of shock and disbelief as well.
I don’t know understand how country that is progressive and the “leader of the free world” can have so much pure hatred stewing it in. It wasn’t even a close race.
So much anger and loathing and hatred, in the US and now the new president. It’s worrying for all the minorities, and for the rest of the world as well.
What have you done, America? 🙁
Has it now occurred to the ‘principled’ third party voters that they might as well be wearing a ‘Proudly Voted for Trump’ sticker? If you look at the percentages of people who voted for Johnson and Stein, if they’d voted for Hillary, she’d have won.
This election had a lot to do with who people hated most. Appallingly it was Clinton. I hope these people understand what they are in for
This is hardly their fault for voting 3rd party. They were brave enough to vote for the person they wanted and didn’t vote out of fear like so many others.
My husband voted Johnson. Lots of friends voted Johnson.
And so long as they understood that by doing so, they were effectively voting for Trump, that’s fine (not being sarcastic, the Libertarian platform has a number of things in common with classic Republicanism).
And now we must all live in fear.
hmmm…yes, it is their fault for being ignorant and not understanding what was at stake…unless you think it’s better to have an uneducated, racist, machist, with lack of diplomacy skills running one of the biggest countries in the world. Hillary was not the ideal candidate but she was no way near the calamity that is Donald Trump. Unfortunately seems like we live in a world full of idiots.
Agreed. It’s hubris to believe 3rd party votes were votes taken from HRC (or for DT). They weren’t, They weren’t her votes to be taken. She simply didn’t garner enough to win. It’s on her.
He won. And it’s not because of people who voted 3rd party any more than it’s due to people who voted HRC. He won the necessary votes.
Why? Everyone here knows people who voted for him. People you otherwise (or used to) like, respect and maybe even care for. Did they suddenly turn into racists, bigots, sexists, etc? Do you honestly believe that? Must of the people I know who, voted for trump will tell you it’s to show a finger to republican power brokers (and democratic ones too), that it’s over immigration they believe run amouk, it’s over foreign trade, and fiscal, issues. Obamacare didn’t fix healthcare……it caused prices to increase, insurers to pull out of markets, etc. I’m paying for 40% more in 2017 and I have the choice of exactly ONE insurer in my part of the state, There issues were largely financial…..they aren’t better off financially and they felt like they were supporting others who worshipped at the feet of Other People’s Money with no end or solutions in sight. And they voted out of fear.
Just like the fear being posted on this page, it’s likely overblown but founded in some small reality.
We are screwed, but it was long before last pm. I’m not happy that our next president is DT but I wasn’t with her either.
Minime… Someone not voting as you want the to does not make them ignorant or uneducated. My husband just so happens to be very capable and educated.
Maybe if the DNC would have offered up a better candidate and hadn’t been outed as scheming against a candidate that a lot of their supporters were behind, this would have gone differently. I blame them… Not the Americans that didn’t vote rank and file the way everyone expected them to.
Some of us did not have the privilege of not voting out of fear.
Thank you for being the voices of reason Lalu and Dirty Martini. I hope voters who berate others to always vote the PleaseNotTheOtherOne candidate understand their votes are really for a broken one-party system.
yeah and if all Hillary voters would have supported Sanders from the start he would have had an easy time but thats just not how it works and i wouldnt hold it against them.
I don’t think Sanders could have won. But Joe Biden could have.
Esmom, .I agree. Biden would have won. HRCs baggage –both real and imagined — was too great. Obama knew it Too. He didn’t want her to be the democratic nominee…..not really. VALerie and Michelle had to push him to get behind her. He had no choice but he hated doing it.
Wow, this was truly some sad, shocking and sick news. Love, support and strength from Sweden to all liberal Americans – you’re gonna need it.
Time to start viewing “Idiocracy” on repeat… Those filmakers unfortunately knew what they were talking about.
Yes I keep thinking about that movie. It’s Idiocracy. Started w/ reality tv, escalated w/our culture’s worship of the kardashians, and now we’re a country feasting on junk food, junk politics, junk junk junk.
My first thought was that film too. Tragically.
America you have hurt my heart!!!!! Even my trust in the goodness of humanity is eroding.
A republican president, congress and senate, and a vacant supreme court seat. Roe v Wade is done.
And most likely same sex marriage, voting rights, any progress made for minorities. And goodbye obamacare.
How is this the America that people want?? I’m baffled
Goodbye Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, the equal employment and opportunity act, voting rights, planned parenthood, clean air, clean water,, the National Endowment for the Arts. All these things are on Paul Ryan’s kill list and nobody will stop him now.
The Republicans will have at least two years (before 2018 midterms) to wreck utter havoc on this country.
Medicare, Medicaid, SS will either be privatized or gone. Obamacare is pretty much dead in the water. The people on Trump’s Supreme Court list are all ultra-conservative Scalia clones so we can kiss voting rights, affirmative action, any gains for minorities, clean air, the environment, public education, gay rights, Roe v Wade, and other stuff goodbye. This will be a corporation-friendly court that will allow corporations to pollute at will and will be hostile to unions.
I’m terrified.
Actually, Row V Wade has been fine with a conservative majority in the Supreme Court for many years. It’s one of the reasons I’m shocked at the evangelicals who pulled a vote for Trump because of the Supreme Court, given his colorful non-evangelical past.
The Supreme Court has always been loathed to overturn Supreme Court decisions. Row isn’t going anywhere. Neither is gay marriage, or whatever voting rights you think you’re gonna lose.
And two very old Democratic-appointed justices, Ginsburg and Breyer.
I feel awful for Americans who didn’t vote for this orange fascist (though third party voters might deserve every bit of it), As a non-American it seems the only thing we can do is to try and take away as much of America’s power as soon as possible through boycotts, though i fear that might be part of the reason why Putin wanted Trump in office. It seems the century of the US being the most powerful country on earth will end sooner rather than later
Just do whatever you would do with any rogue nation with a huge stockpile of WMDs.
Problem with that is that it would lead to WWIII, Trump listens to money over anything else. I just hope he’ll be impeached very very soon, though then we’ll be stuck with Pence, who isn’t any better. The next four years will be hell, but hopefully by then everyone will have sobered up and never do something like this ever again
I watched part of the election coverage here in Australia with my high school students. They were genuinely worried about the world if Trump won. i tried to use it as teaching point -sometimes you need to vote to keep the wrong people out. I wasn’t a Clinton fan, but she was a hell of a lot better than Trump.
Dear Celebitchy USA residents; do hold on. I know what you’re going through. Sending best wishes from chilly but sunny Croatia. Come here. It’s no picnick either but at least you can enjoy some sun
You know, compared to this, our situation practically is a picknick. Plenković seems like Mother Theresa now.
@Locke I know right? I said this morning I will not complain that much about our situation when I just saw what happend in USA … hell we even have female president, and she has her flaws and problems but we are actually really conservative country and yet she won the election. Could it be that our country is not that sexist … Gosh so many feelings this morning …
sorry for my english celebitchy…
And we had two female prime ministers, one of them being the first female prime minister in Europe.
We might not be as sexist as people think, or our conservatism manifests in different ways.
I really hope things somehow work out in the US. And I hope we all don’t get screwed in the process.
Exactley how we managed to get out of that mess amazes me. I was never proright wing but this goverment at this moment aint half bad.
ps pusa cure
ps pusa cure
Stunned & sickened over here, the other side of the pond.
I’m struggling to get my head round the fact that someone can actually be caught on camera, bragging about sexual assaulting women, & it doesn’t hinder his career one iota. Not sure my poor little female brain can quite compute that.
Anyone who’s had their pussy grabbed without their consent – today bloody hurts.
2016. The gift that keeps on giving.
Caught on tape, yet apparently it is OK with half the country who bothered to vote. Well, democracy happened and now let’s see if buyer’s remorse sets in soon.
I couldn’t concentrate today and skipped classes and work because I was too anxious to do anything productive. Now all I can feel is overwhelming fear and the thought that this is how it feels when you can sense the beginning of the end. I’m a poc and a woman and just thinking about the validation this gives to the worst behaviors of the privileged majority in this country absolutely sicken me. Underneath it all though, is the anger. Anger at the fact that poc aren’t even asking for anything other than equality, to be seen as human and worthy of love and respect. Apparently that’s too much for the majority of the assholes in this country.
This is a dream. This is a dream. This is a dream. I propose we lease Obama on a month to month basis until we fix this mess. How? Just how? I cannot comprehend this outcome!
Dream? I think you mean a nightmare.
As a Pennsylvania woman who proudly voted for Clinton yesterday all I can say is that I’m devastated by this result. I feel like the U.S. has been set back 100 years.
Right back to before the Civil War.
Much love from Ireland. If you want we can send over our awesome tiny wizard President Michael D Higgins to call him a wanker!
What is also ironic about this is that its almost to the day that the Berlin wall started to fall and yet the US elects a man who wants to build another one. I hope the sane people of the US continue to stand for all that is decent and fight against the tyranny and chaos that Trump will bring. Don’t give up hope and keep making your voices heard.
exactly 80 years ago in Germany synagoges were destroyed or damaged and Jewish homes, hospitals, and schools were ransacked in the Night of the Broken Glass…. I am so horrified about the result of this election I cannot find words. I am inconsolable.
Now that he won POTUS, we all get to watch him get revenge on everyone that mocked him. He will sue all those women who accused him of sexual assault. He will go after the media for making fun of him. He will incarcerate Hillary. He will repeal Obamacare. He will ban muslims from the US. he will go after anybody who turned their backs on him. We all know what a vindictive SOB he is.
And here is hoping for some sensitive smart Republican in congress that won’t back him in his lunacy!
According to Omarosa he has been keeping an enemies list and has already started choosing he will go after first. She’s a Trump supporter so she said this with glee in her voice.
The free press is done. Trump will destroy the media for not endorsing him, for daring to cover his scandals, etc. NEarly every media member who isn’t a hardcore conservative Republican is horrified about what lies ahead.
The free press helped enable Trump. I won’t feel sorry for them if Trump goes after them.
My hope is that Trump realizes that he can’t do 95% of what he wants and quits. He has no clue what being President is about.
Congratulations old white men.
Well, their votes count too. The Clinton campaign should’ve realized that BEFORE last night.
The fact is, of course the old white males’s votes count, however there was nothing the Clinton campaign could’ve done to win their vote. I am no Hillary stan (i did vote for her though) but they have hated Hillary for years. It all dates back to when she dared to champion women’s reproductive rights and Universal health care in the 90s. Though of course, Hillary has the normal amount of corruption that most politicians have, so there’s that too. Actually it was millenials, white women, Hispanics and Asians that did not come to bat for her.
Yup. And I hate to point fingers but I think most people thought we had this in the bag. Millenials and minorities were not coming out as strong as expected.
yup exactly
As an Eastern European, I’m devastated about this monster’s win and terrified about the future. There is only one small, defenceless country between me and Trump’s puppetmaster. Also, the Democrats made a huge mistake with HRC. She has a lot of baggage, deservedly or not. They should never have taken this huge gamble with the fate of the world at stake. One last thing: there is no excuse tsoever for the Trump voters. Lack of education and lack of intelligence doesn’t get them off the hook. No person with an ounce of decency could vote for this vile man.He has the potential to be worse than Hitler. As a Christian, there is nothing
The Republican and Democratic primaries decided the nominees, and they happened simultaneously. Every state’s ballot was obtainable as R or D in each state’s primary. There is no way they could have known that the orange demagogue would be the opponent or how crazy the general election campaign would be. What were they supposed to do, toss away the primary votes and choose someone else? The Republicans were in the same bind. Hillary and Donald received the most primary votes.
I give it a few days before the FBI decide to irradiate the problem.
I’m genuinely interested to see how the intelligence community will deal with this issue because they’ve made it really, really clear throughout the campaign that they won’t accept his presidency. Of course Trump has his allies in the IC but seriously, a lot of national security people are scared to death of the idea of a Trump WH.
As if Trump was just given to US. America voted Trump so he is their very own choice. That’s why no hugs and kisses to comfort this result. He was chosen. Now US can enjoy fully what they wanted to have.
But not me, not my family, not my state. This is my first election where I actually cried. The first election that my daughter, who just turned 15, was passionate about, so passionate that she woke at 5 AM, looked up the election results, and also cried. We are middle class white Americans. And our family is deeply saddened.
Half the country didn’t vote for this man which means half the country is upset and in shock right now! We didn’t want this man as our president and saying so is false.
And what about all the people who didn’t vote Trump and did all in their effort to explain how important it is he’s not elected, which is just a little less than half of their population?
From the UK, Mew, I think that’s unfair. This site is just one indication of the intelligent and thoughtful people out there who detest everything Trump stands for. They are not to blame. I certainly didn’t accept collective blame for Margaret Thatcher, I never voted for her , and I don’t see why US citizens should share collective guilt.
Minority Rights gone
Women’s Rights gone
Moral Values gone
Justice gone
Equality gone
Congrats to the people that voted for this man.. and SHAME on the people that sat on their hands and didn’t vote. We just stepped back in time.. Maybe the problem was people don’t remember what the world use to be.. well you are going to get a taste.
“Minority Rights gone
Women’s Rights gone
Moral Values gone
Justice gone
Equality gone”
Hyperbole…still here.
You clearly have never read Speaker of the House Paul Ryan’s policy positions.
Numb is the correct word. I feel nothing right now and I’ve never felt that during an election. And on behalf of the sane, educated, and non racist/sexist/homophobic ppl of Florida I apologize for the other half of my state voting for this man. I’m truly embarrassed.
I am sickened – our country got more dangerous today. I am so disappointed in the suburban college educated white women who voted for trump. I hope they can be deprogrammed from thinking they have to fit in with the patriarchy to beat it. You won’t win anything with trump and you potentially hurt millions of people.
To all my US celebitchy commentator – stay safe. Will this be Hitler part 2?
He may be a woman hater but percentage wise more women voted than men, which means women elected him.
The subservient racist women (some of them identify as MRAs, most of them conservative) in this country voted for him. Gotta go with what their bigoted husbandly owners, daddies, and imaginary sky daddies want. The racists, misogynists, and anyone who’s a part of a hate group in this country must feel pretty empowered right now. Everyone who supported this guy or who voted in a way that made his win possible is selfish, short-sighted scum and is complicit in whatever his new position of power causes to happen.
My boys will not be sent overseas to die for the wars Trump will start. Not until everyone that voted for him sends their children to the front lines first. That is one demand I must make. Sorry world, America screwed everybody.
Or his own children go, which is more than he did.
So much this. What you are saying is very important. those who supported all things potentially leading to war should stand in the front line.
Freedom is also about not wanting something and NOT having to take part of It or suffer the consequences.
People have to be ready to protest whatever way they can, privately or publicly, against whatever issue they can maintain the passion for. I can’t say how much good it will do with Orange Hitler, but the original was indeed blocked a bit by public protests when they happened. Also bureaucrats and officers delayed or pretended to misunderstand orders such as to send people off to the concentration camps. Hitler was infuriated by a Catholic bishop who described and denounced the camps from the pulpit, but couldn’t do anything about it because it was a heavily Catholic area and needed for military industries.
Don’t expect miracles. We hardly made a dent in Reagan’s wars with various protests against his Central American wars . But that might be a size issue, the Vietnam war was shortened by protests and people just not showing up for induction (half of them by the end).
You won’t know until you try. Even though Trump is unreachable, some other Republicans may be more attentive because they want to get re-elected. Orange Hitler doesn’t care. Even just sending off a postcard in response to whatever awful news items you see does show Congress that you’re watching how they vote.
Eww. What a shame.
I feel sick. Went to bed crying and I’m crying right now. Educated white women were his surprise demo.
I started unfollowing the few people I knew that voted for Trump. And then a few more for saying we shouldn’t unfollow people that voted for him. Cause frankly I don’t want to hear it anymore. You know what it’s like to be told your country hates you? Not just women but I’m a black woman. I’m terrified.
We are looking at a new Great Depression coupled with a world war and a civil war. I officially can say I hate this country.
I feel you. I am a black woman as well. A few years back It was feeling as if everything was possible for everyboby. That the racism and sexism even though still alive couldn’t be expressed publicly anymore. And now it’s like those behaviours are validated. Like minorities are about to get put back in the place they never should have leave. Chilling. But Time to pray harder and prepare to speak/act louder and louder.
*hugs* Never let hope die.
My family and I are war now. I agree with you Nicole. Can’t live without you ladies.
Oh well, the Simpsons got it right 16 years ago when they had an episode featuring President Trump.
yet again pollsters have completely failed to predict how people will vote. All the rednecks must have come out in droves to vote. I can’t believe the result and words fail me about it.
I don’t know why people are bothering with trying to get to Canada. There will be no safe place left on earth in 4 years time with President Trump at the helm.
It’s raining now in Mobile for the first time since September. The sky is crying.
I thought the same thing when I saw the rain here this morning in Maryland where’s it’s been long overdue. It’s a sad time for this lonely planet.
As an Alabamian, one of the worst things for me is that massive turd Jeff Sessions will probably get a cabinet position.
Good Lord- what position have you heard??? That is beyond terrifying! And this am, that is saying a lot.
Fellow Alabamian here: I thought he was after Secretary of State? ::Shudder::
“The third-party votes were definitely enough to ruin Clinton’s chances in several states, so I’m so glad that so many people voted their ‘conscience.'”
Third-party votes snatched several states away from Trump as well (like my home state of MN), so you can’t whine about that.
Yep, Gary Johnson got four times the votes Jill Stein did, and many in swing states, not the completely safe blue and red states the Green Party thrives in.
Johnson voters trend significantly towards supporting Trump and/or being habitual non-voters. He certainly siphoned some votes from Clinton, but he siphoned a lot more from Trump and got a lot of his votes from people who wouldn’t have voted otherwise.
Third party candidates didn’t get a large percentage of the vote this election. In 92 Ross Perot got 20 million votes, almost 4 times more than all the third party candidates got this year combined. In 96 he got over 8 million votes. In 1980 John B Anderson got almost 6 million votes. In 68 George Wallace got almost 10 million votes.
This is not some crazy outlier year for third party candidates, if anything they all did pretty atrociously given the circumstances of this particular election.
I’m disappointed that they didn’t do better, given the horrible candidates we had.
Look, I’ve been pro Trump since day one; but let me give you guys some encouragement. The R’s warned everybody how bad Obama would be; but even to them, he didn’t wreck it as badly as they thought. My encouragement to you is, it won’t be what you thought. Even his victory speech wasn’t as partisan as he had been. He spoke about jobs in the inner city. All I’m saying, is don’t panic or be down, because our country will survive.
I wish I could believe that. But Trump really is different (and I’m old as dirt so I’ve seen plenty of doofuses in high places). He has a severe personality disorder and is unpredictable. There is a reason top Republicans and military/intelligence people went out on a limb to warn about him and people in other countries are so worried, something we have never seen before. He can cause far more damage than any previous President and quickly. And some of that damage can’t be fixed- so I’m hoping a true patriot disables his access to the nuclear codes in some way. It would take him only a few minutes to change the planet (including the USA) forever. If you are comfortable with that, it’s only because you don’t know enough about nuclear weapons and the consequences of using them. I do (Ph.D. In physics).
This is not just about policy differences, although I believe he will trash our economy and social structures pretty badly. It’s about his character and behavior. He is not a stable or knowledgeable person and has a long history of not listening to anybody who tells him things he doesn’t want to hear. I doubt that anybody sane will be able to control him. He should not be allowed anywhere near responsibility for weapons of mass destruction.
Thank you, @jwoolman. Even though everything you say makes me shudder with fear, thank you for stating the plain hard truth.
I don’t know how you can sit here and say ‘don’t panic’ when Trump has spewed hatred against people of colour, women and immigrants for 18 months and only been rewarded for it. How am I not meant to feel down when your country is so intrinsically sexist and racist that an experienced, hardworking woman was passed over for a man who, until recently, presented a reality TV show?
If you aren’t panicked or down, you either aren’t paying enough attention or you’re privileged enough to escape the hatred Trump has galvanised in America.
I completely agree. If ever there was a time to panic, it is NOW.
Did you hear the crowd during his victory speech? There were several “Hang Obamas” and “Lock her up” from the crowd. There was dead silence when Trump said he would try and reach across the aisle. That crowd was not there for that, they elected Trump BECAUSE he was racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. They want a Trump that is for white people only.
Someone on Jezebel linked to an article last night from August where a caller to the Glenn Beck show called in and said that if Trump didn’t build that wall and go through with the other promises he has made during the campaign that he and other Trump supporters weren’t afraid to take Trump out. Trump’s crazies will not tolerate him reaching out to minorities and to rebuild the inner cities. His brutally vicious and nasty campaign has emboldened people to be openly nasty and hateful.
@Curtis, this crazed orange bigot combined with the pure evil that is Paul Ryan gives me plenty of reason to panic. Thank you for voting to allow health insurers to discriminate against me based on my cancer diagnosis.
I disagree. This felt like when people in my country elected our current president, I thought “you are going to regret this so much”, and I was right. Thousands of deaths and disappearances, horrible politics, worst economic decissions later, a lot of people realized they shouldn’t have voted out of fear. Sadly I think this is what is going to happen to the ones who voted for him out of economic reasons.
On the other hand, he needs to be the racist *ss that he has during his campaign. People voted for that. They don’t want a nice guy, they want a racist biggot who expulse immigrants, punishes women and diminish minorities. So if he wants to be popular, he needs to keep his hate-speech promises.
“The R’s warned everybody how bad Obama would be; but even to them, he didn’t wreck it as badly as they thought. ”
Maybe it’s because they blocked every legislative reform he tried to pass?
From Mozambique, I am truly devastated with this outcome. Since Gas/Oil reserves were found a couple of years ago we have been scared of becoming the next Syria, but now with Trump… I’m at a loss for words. What does this mean for the world??? Is this the Apocalypse?
I understand how you feel because I have that same fear.
Can we get rid of the electoral college, now? She’s won the actual vote. I am just despondent this morning.
Same with Gore in 2000. He won the popular vote but lost the electoral college.
I think it’s time to get rid of the EC, but I have been saying that long before this.
I am profoundly upset. Is this how Britain felt when Brexit went through? I can’t put into words the depths of despair, distaste, and disappointment I am feeling.
I do think it’s worst. And I was pretty severe on the brexit front. But then, brexit is more a “let’s divorce”. Trump is a “I’m not even gona try to pretend to try to goodness”. Psycho and proud of it.
It’s the same!!
@Jane
No, for anyone in UK this is just the same. I locked myself in for one week after the referendum.
A day didn’t pass without a foreigner being beaten up (I live in a Leave area, I guess it’d be the same as living in a Trump one).
To be honest, if America survive and Americans get rid of the maniac in 4 years, it’ll be less of a problem than Brexit, a bad decision that we’ll have to be subjected to for decades on end.
Utterly disgusting! DT is a huge boil on the ass of humanity. I’m so upset, disillusioned & disgusted. Do they offer an crash course in Presidency? I will never support him. I will never call him President.
wow, never would have believed this was even possible. EVER. i was thinking she would win and the work could be focused on calling out the corruption. but now add to that protecting our basic human rights, especially for those in the minority. such a mountain to climb.
i never liked hrc but i PROUDLY voted for her JUST TO VOTE AGAINST CHEETO CLOWN.
i am embarrassed and frustrated. angry. i can’t go around wearing a “voted for hrc -tuck frump” tshirt everyday but i want to.
there has got to be some way to let others know i voted against Drumpf, that i stand for equality, that i support freedom and equal rights for all people, that I stand united with my brothers and sisters in the minority.
maybe a blue poppy?
PLEASE someone come up with something because there are many americans like me that are too stunned to know what to do.
it is disheartening reading comments by readers that feel shamed and persecuted because of their creed or color or sexual orientation or whatever. we need solidarity now more than ever so the persecuted and disenfranchised know they are not alone.
so PLEASE someone help me find a symbol because i will personally make it happen.
I’ve been reading celebitchy for a few years now but this is the first time I comment. I’m Chilean, my father was tortured and jailed for opposing Pinochet, a right wing dictator backed and financially supported by the US. They even sent Cia agents to train in torture technics to Pinochet’s secret police, which they certainly used on thousends of innocents citizens. My point is that because of that I never had the highest opinion of US politics but this is really a new low…i can’t imagine what immigrants, black community, fellow latinos, Muslims living there are feeling … What women are feeling… A racist xenophobic sex offender has now access to the nuclear launch codes… What a sad day for the world
I came to write basically the same thing. I’m also Chilean and I have a “dissapeared” aunt.
Donald Trump is much worse than most dictators I can think of… and the majority of Americans willingly gave the presidency to him.
Thanks for speaking up about this – sadly, most Americans do not even know about so many of our government’s evil doings around the world, especially within the last century, and it doesn’t help that so many here don’t even have passports or consider traveling out of the country. But I can say I voted for Clinton, and she (as of now) did win the popular vote so our electoral college system pretty much screwed us all over on this one. Sorry to the rest of the world for whatever terrible things this orange fascist dictator does now.
Yes. Sadly people who voted for him don’t have an idea of what it is really to live in a really violent and facist country. Now they might soon wake up in that horrible reality.
I’m Mexican, so I’m aware that journalists, teachers, students and protesters are now in great danger.
@Jamie
Oh, tell me about it. Everytime I speak against American military, who I have very valid reasons to detest, I’m told to shut up and be respectful. Those people were serving your country by killing mine. What about YOU show ME some respect?
Americans do have a lot to fear, and so do foreigners. We don’t know how many wars this person is willing to start, or which places he’ll try to invade and control.
The sad/funny thing about this is that I see people responding to comments by non-United States-Americans and telling them that they (the non-U.S. americans) should keep out of U.S. affairs.
I have been thinking about the great terrors of the last century…the Pinochet regime in Chile, internment of Japanese Americans in the U.S., the Holocaust (the anniversary of Kristallnacht is tonight and there was anti-semitic graffiti on shop windows in Philly this morning). I have been thinking that we are on the verge of one of those times. We don’t know what exactly will happen. We don’t know how this president will persecute large groups of innocent people. But I think it will happen. What to do in such times? Underground resistance and organization, getting people help where they need it the most, standing up to injustice wherever possible. These next years will be hard, very hard, for many many people.
If Clinton had every single Jill Stein vote, she still wouldn’t have come close to winning the electoral college. It would have given her a slight boost as far as the popular vote goes, but in this case that’s no help.
Gary Johnson voters largely leaned towards Trump, or not voting at all. He definitely siphoned off some Dem voters and swing voters, but he siphoned off more Trump voters. If anything he helped make Trump’s win a little less decisive.
The ‘other candidate’ voters are present in every election, they’re niche voters the major two parties and high profile third party candidates never get to. They shouldn’t really factor in, they were never going to vote Republican or Democrat regardless of who was running.
Third party voters didn’t derail Clinton. What’s clear from the polling vs. the results is that a significant amount of Democrats voted for Trump while pretending to be Clinton supporters.
I agree. It’s easy to get on third party voters but let’s lay the blame where it belongs: squarely on the shoulders of Trump supporters.
Long time reader, first time poster. I went into a Valium induced sleep at 1030 pm because I couldn’t take it. Woke up at 2 am to my phone telling me Putin just sent congrats to Agent Orange. Am in shock. Despair. Afraid. Terrified. Angry too, under the shock. Ashamed for the first time ever of being an American. Deep deep shame. While I don’t want to appear naive to the sexism, racism, homophobia, misogeny, bigotry and hate that exists in the world, I am simply stunned by the amount of it clearly rampant in my country. As a survivor of multiple sexual assaults, this election has been triggering to me on a level I cannot describe. This nominee/ new president brags about sexually assaulting women. And now that the majority of my country has shown itself to support someone like Agent Orange, it’s clear my country hates me. Hates my queer, black, Muslim, female, disabled, Latino friends and family too. They hate us. Because that’s what Agent Orange ran on: Hate and Divisiveness. And he won. Ashamed. Terrified. Supreme Court? Good bye. R v W? Good bye. After being glued to political television for months, my plan is a BBC Pride & Prejudice marathon followed by the complete Harry Potter series from my bed, covered by as many kittens as I can get to stay on me. Napping at will. I’m sorry, World. I did my part and voted. Knocked on doors. Got out the vote. But there is more hate in my country than I knew and I im ashamed. So so ashamed.
I feel the shame as well. I always believed this country, it’s people as a whole, was better than what this election has shown us. My heart goes out you for the pain and fear it has rekindled, so please know that you are not alone. Many of us are grieving, but our strength, your strength, and our sense of decency and compassion, will prevail through unity and kindness, and rejection of the bigotry and racism he and his followers promote.
And somehow, half of our country thinks it’s perfectly fine to elect a President endorsed by the Ku Klux Klan.
I cannot get over that.
That’s because half the country agrees with the KKK. That is the reality.
@HK that is NOT the truth. Half of the country? My god. No . Also the orange One rejected them and their endorsement. No one wants the KKK around.
We are waking up in the new world today. I am beyond sad, dissapointed and worried.
Donald Trump may be all smiles and doing the happy dance because he won the election but he will come crashing down to earth soon enough.
He has to now govern and also the people who elected him want to see results. He will have to deal with world leaders who have years of political service. He can’t throw a tantrum or threaten to ” bomb the hell” out of a country if they don’t agree with what he wants to do.
He considers himself a great businessman but how many times did he file for bankruptcy ? Somehow I don’t think a country can file for bankruptcy if he screws up again.
Winning an election is easy, now comes the hard work.
Sending love & hugs from Nigeria. This is a very sad and heartbreaking but not totally unexpected outcome. This is the only site I visit where majority endorse Hilary and those who don’t disagree respectfully, I feel like everywhere else on the internet is filled with crazy, racist, fascist, ageists & homophobic people. This is truly what majority of Americans are about and they have just set America back a whole lot more than they realize. I hope we all survive the next four years. I’d invite some of you who want to relocate to come down here but we also have a shit president & a terrible economy so you’re not alone.
I’m not at the numb point yet. There is a pit in my stomach and my head is pounding. I am honestly tempted to call in sick.
I haven’t stopped crying since the election was called last night. I have been disgusted and truly disliked presidents before, but this is the first time I have felt real fear for what is to come. And for the first time in my life, I am truly ashamed at being American.
Stay safe, everybody. My friend and I both think there’s going to be a lot of election-related violence out there today. Thankfully I’m not scheduled to work today and don’t even have to leave. Like everybody else I was so anxious yesterday and now I’m just bummed and scared for the future- for everybody, since crime is probably about to skyrocket and who knows what awful things our new ‘president’ will be responsible for- but specifically for Latinos, Muslims, black people, and the disabled too. Still holding out a little bit of hope that it’s discovered that the votes were rigged.
Really? Violence? Where? Oh my god.
Small victory? Looks like NC governor McCrory (governor that passed the HB2 “bathroom law” and continued to defend it after the backlash) is going to be voted out. I’m at least glad for that.
And the happiest person in the country is……..Alec Baldwin!
I work with all males and I am a black female-I heard the men in another room calling Hilary the B word and saying something about there will be no “woman” president.
waaay before it was over and I was sickened last night hearing that crap. It was hard for me to keep a straight face, I pretended not to be bothered and now I wish I had a fifth of vodka.
They were saying that Bush didn’t want the war, President Obama did and I wanted to say something but I felt it was inaapropriate to even be talking about it.
Some may beg to differ but I saw w/my own eyes it was about gender 75% and maybe race 25%.
100% CRAP
You heard that at work? That is a hostile work environment. File a complaint immediately.
Hostile work environment here too. I can not speak of anything, yet they talk all the trash they want.
If they are referring to women as “bitches” and the company employs more than 25 people, get yourself to the nearest EEOC office or your state anti-discrimination commission and file a discrimination complaint. Some states have much broader laws than the federal one and it operates as a dual filing in each. Nobody should have to put up with that in the workplace. It is ILLEGAL. And no, you do not need a lawyer for the first round. The commission helps you file your complaint. Have dates, names and facts.
File that complaint now because that is a hostile work environment, Do it before Trump eliminates the EEOC.
Canadian here : I’m so sorry that Trump got elected. Can’t believe it.
If you wish to have health care, protected reproductive rights and a prime minister (not perfect, but better than Trump and that identify as a feminist), move to Canada! We’ll welcome you!
Also Canadian. I’m scared that Trump’s brand of right wing idiocy will come to Canada, next election. His win is already fuelling our crazies who oppose things like basic human rights and decency and kindness and decorum. You can say garbage about minorities and still run a country. You can joke about how you’re “allowed” to violate women and still run a country. You can barely string together a sentence and still run a country.
How do you go from your first black president to a president endorsed by the KKK? In 2016, how did this happen?
It will be interesting to see who the tories will pick as new chief. But so far in the 11 candidates, there are no one as crazy as Trump. And we have the Charter of Rights, that do protect us.
It would devide Canada so much that Québec might separate.
The day America f*cked every single one of us. And i’m not even American.
A terrible truth.
fuck america i thought you were better than this…
i can’t believe this
I dont feel sorry for America because America did this to itself. I do feel sorry for the rest of us out there who did not get a say in this and who will have to put up with this idiot for the next 4 years.
I am heartsick and frightened for the future. AT LEAST WE HAVE BOTH THE INTERNET, AND THE INSTITUTION OF IMPEACHMENT. WE may need both. Remember if things get wonky: It isn’t when bad people do things that we all go to hell; it’s when good people do nothing.
Kaiser you were not alone in 2000 and you are not alone now.
I wasn’t sick in 2000, I was angry. Now I’m like you, I’m numb.
I don’t know how I’m going to go to work today.
Does anyone else believe there’s something very evil about this? I mean, think about it… Trump kept saying for months the process is “rigged.” Yet he kept winning and now he’s President. I’d hate to believe every Presidential election is determined by evil forces (machines at polling stations are tampered with etc….) but how else can you explain what’s happened? Govts around the world are linked to organized crime. There is no democracy.
Yeah a lot of people in my FB feed are making comments similar to yours. I don’t know what to think at this point…..
I’m a little worried about selective tampering myself. Exit polls and the Nick kids vote didn’t match the outcome, just as in 2004 when I’m sure hacking of the machines occurred in the key state of Ohio. Before then, both the Nick vote and exit polls were accurately predictive. There were signs of some hacking in 2008, but people were so ticked at George that Obama got enough votes anyway. I should explain that those machines (mostly manufactured by active conservative Republicans) were installed everywhere by 2004 after Bush got the Florida recount of paper ballots shut down in 2000 (otherwise Gore would have won). My heart sank when I saw them, because I know how susceptible to tampering they can be and how difficult they make recounts. I felt that we would never be sure of an election again.
We were so focused on other types of voter suppression this time, since the Voting Rights Act was gutted, that we weren’t focusing on other possibilities.
It’s a nightmare and so insulting to all the groups that Trump has insulted. You tell your kids not to be a bully and then go and elect one. You call Hillary a liar but Trump’s lies are too many to count. It’s insane. It makes me wonder also about selective tampering. Russians could be behind it as they were with all the leaks.
I live in Texas in a metropolitan area but when you travel out of the city into the rural areas, signs begin to pop up reading “Take Our Country Back”. This happened almost immediately after Obama’s first election. I believe these people were waiting for a candidate like Trump to verbalize their fears and validate their bigotry and they ran to the polls in droves. I’m so sad for Mr. Obama. He is such an elegant President whose legitimacy was incessantly called into questioned by the bigot who is taking his place. Make America Hate Again.
I feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone or am I in the Upside Down? 😣😭
Thanks celebitchy for creating a space where intelligent, thoughtful and kind people can gather to discuss all kind of topics (usually less important that this). I have to confess that after what happened today I really need this site to remember me that not we can’t over-generalize that every American is an uneducated xenophobe (but boy, today is really tough!!)…I’m so disappointed that more than half of the population chose this man to represent them! What will he do when he doesn’t agree with someone? Shout at them? Arrest them? Cry foul? This man has no idea of politics or diplomacy!!! My sincerest hugs to all of you who you will be feeling closer the effects of a choice you didn’t do.
I’m American and I share your sentiments entirely. I’m disgusted and horrified by my country.
You know what I just remembered? At last years VMA’s Kanye West said he was running for president in 2020. I’ll just leave it at that.
Well if Trump can win, ANYONE can.
yep, Kim for FLOTUS.
Oh my… I feel for you, my friends. Big virtual hug from France. I’m afraid we’ll be the next country to jump on the populist bandwagon next year…
I live in the Rust Belt.
It’s overly simplistic to say Trump won because we’re all racist over here.
Look at the county polls in WI and MI–Clinton lost counties that Obama won by huge margins in 2012.
Plus HRC never once visited Wisconsin after the Democratice Convention–not once! Her Rust Belt Blue Wall collapsed because people here have tremendous economic anxiety and saw HRC as another Washington elite signing trade deals that took more of our jobs away and sent them oversees.
In the end it all came down to a couple hundred thousand votes in the Rust Belt and it really was about the economy.
I’m not a Trump apologist at all….but just wanted to give you the view from the heartland. We’re not all racist, misogynist, xenophobic dolts….she was a terribly flawed candidate and she lacked all of Obamas appeal, the same appeal that allowed him to sweep the Rust Belt both in 2008 and 2012
Just sayin.
Are they aware that Trump’s manufacturing is done outside the US and that he routinely uses foreign goods and labor for his projects? He hired mostly illegal Polish construction workers at one point for one project so he could pay them very little for skilled work. More recently, he hired at least a couple of hundred Eastern Europeans to work in his Florida resorts, same idea (cheap labor). People who voted for him for the reasons you cite are going to be very disappointed.
Rural and rust belt voters are being sold a bill of goods from the GOP. Yes I agree that Dems often overlook them but that’s because these rust belt voters have been increasingly voting in every right wing crazy and ignoring competent Dems who might get something done. Kansas citizens keep voting for Sam Brownback even though he has trashed Kansas’ schools and all but bankrupted the state.
Those factory and manufacturing jobs aren’t coming back – they just aren’t. Companies and corporations don’t want to pay the livable wages and health care costs. They would rather pay pennies to a Indian kid or Malaysian kid who will work for 15 cents an hour with no complaints.
As said above, Trump has a long history of using foreign workers and illegal immigrants to build and work at his golf courses, hotels, etc.
I wasn’t pro Clinton either and yes she is a flawed candidate, but my god, what the hell is Trump then??
If Clinton is a terribly flawed candidate lacking all of Obama’s charm as you call it, what in god’s name would you call Trump then!??
I get how people don’t like Clinton, I do, but what I can’t get is how can people like Trump more than her?!?!!?
Racism is the economic construct upon which the rust belt (and many other places) built their ‘prosperity’ so no it’s not to be dismissed. Now that the jobs have left, instead of looking at the fact they voted for people Republicans who conduct business in a way that’s against their best interest, they’ve taken the bait with the let’s go back to the ‘good ‘ol days’ and the economy that ran it. They’ve been sold this same bill of goods since the close of the civil war when the rich saw that poor whites and the black population outnumbered them. It’s time they wake up now.
Trump blames the loss of jobs on all the nasty brown people. People are so happy to embrace that blame. Own up to your racism.
This election makes me believe the following to come true:
1) Trump will be a puppet president. The man who cannot study for debates or knows how to use email will have 2-3 advisors from Repubs whispering in his ear, telling him what to do.
2) Trump will not be impeached. The Repubs have too much power to let that happen
3) Hate crime will become a very prominent problem in the near future. There will be riots in major cities due to boiling points between the now vocal racists. BlackLivesMatter movement will face even more violence and police brutality.
4) Our economy will go into recession. The deficit will skyrocket, and debt will reach a major tipping point. The US will lose at least another credit rank.
5) International politics will spin into turmoil causing Europe to see a new multi-state war. ISIS will resurge, establishing legitimacy.
6) Trump will last only 4 years – he will be replaced with a male Democrat. Cory Booker, maybe?
7) We will see a Latino president before we see a female president (not a bad thing, just an observation. The general population obviously finds a POC male less intimidating than a woman).
This election makes me sick. I had to explain to my children Trump said all those hateful things just to get elected – he probably won’t say them again because he doesn’t need the votes any more. I hope.
This is my fear too. Also that Pence will pretty much run the government, so gay marriage and abortion are going to be gone by June.
I said this last night in the open election threat, and after a few hours of sleep, it’s my tinfoil-hat silver-lining:
I’m to the point where I’m hoping something comes out in the next few days or weeks that so thoroughly links the Trump campaign to Russia that it amounts to treason and essentially bars him or anyone associated with his campaign from taking office. The electoral college, in hopes of avoiding a constitutional crisis, then elects Hillary.
Honestly, given that this is 2016, I actually feel like this could happen and it would all sort of make perfect sense.
Spot on. 🙁
I can’t believe this piece of sh*t won. I love crossing the border to shop…but as soon as Trump is in office I won’t step foot into America.
Terrified doesn’t even begin to explain how I feel. But, I have decided to combat his hatred with kindness. My battle cry/ action plan is this: do as much good as possible to as many people as possible, as often as possible!
Heartbroken, terrified, – watching poor little Barron Trump’s face behind whilst Donald makes his victory speech – even he looks scared.
I have an 18 year old son and a 9 year old son. I’m a woman. Unmarried. At poverty level. A student. A participant in the health care programs.
I was really pulling for HRC. No way she can save us now. We are screwed.
I wondered who the kid was, he looked bewildered.
I am so sad. As a woman I feel betrayed by my state and my country. I feel like America just said respect for women is not important and we are only good for one thing.
What a historic and amazing night. ❤️🇺🇸
Yeah. Think of the international pussy grabbing opportunities it opens up for the POTUS. Makes you proud to be an American.
I can’t help but wonder how many votes for Hillary did James Comey’s announcement take away from her?
I’m distraught and heartbroken. I can’t stop crying at work. I think I’m going to have to declare I’m sick and go home. I am an immigrant to the US, and was planning to become a citizen next year, when i am eligible. But I will not become a citizen under that man. Instead, I will try to find a way to leave and take my PhD and my educated beautiful children to a country that deserves us.
American here who did vote for Hillary. I literally felt sick and scared when I heard she conceded to Trump. Four years of this bigoted wuss who threatens to sue anyone who makes fun of him (i.e. Bill Maher) is just sad and horrifying. Hopefully, 2020 will show a better potential president because I’m not entirely sure how well the protest votes can stop him.
I woke up to my state going red for the first time in over forty years. Third parties split the difference in Trump’s favor. I spent the few minutes before I left for work listening to my friend’s argue about whether they should push forward with an official diagnosis for their son’s autism because of the risk of something ala 1940s Germany occurring. I have never felt more sick in my life.
One of my friends who voted third party was trying to act like the “voice of reason” saying the country would survive this. I told her that I hoped she was right because the alternative is horrifying.
Elisabeth Warren 2020
People, we need to make this happen.
Also, if i print up T-shirts that say ‘NOT MY PRESIDENT’ is anyone interested. I’ll make sure they’re made in the USA.
Sign me up! Warren 2020!
How can you possibly think that a woman would win after this? Do you even know what kind of garbage people say about Warren–the same people who just decided that Trump is what’s best for our country?
They’re already mixing up the Kool-Aid and handing out glasses.
We will not see a female president in our lifetime, mark my words.
I mean, it’s a great sentiment and I wish I could get on board but I think this election was a lesson about how high-profile female politicians are vilified and slandered and that solid political experience is of less importance than a jingoistic campaign slogan and a dick.
I agree on the misogyny but they are going to treat any Dem candidate the same way – they always do. Slash and burn, lie, obfuscate, demean and destroy. Warren, unlike Hillary, doesn’t have the baggage, doesn’t have deep ties to the DNC, the ties to Wall St., the lapses in judgement. She’s an economic populist who can speak to the economic concerns of some of the people who voted for Trump. She would energize the youth and the progressives and hopefully others would see she’d fight for them as well. Let’s face it, something has got to give in our political system.
I never wore the Hillary love goggles and feel more optimistic. Warren is the real deal, imo. HIllary was a weak and unpopular candidate on her own merits(still, I voted for her on the Working Families ticket). The party machine chose to wrong foot sanders at every turn and backed her 110%. Then Hillary was crystal clear to Sanders voters that they were bad, wrong and, especially, unwanted. The dems treated their base, ‘minorities’, blue collar and seniors as an afterthought, at best. AARP didn’t even endorse her, a huge voting block she should have had a lock on. Her turning up in Detroit at the last minute must have been when it dawned on Team Hill that much of the party’s presumed base was either slipping toward Trump or planning to stay home.
I am horribly afraid you are right kitten. What message does this send to young boys? You can be everything that’s detestable, and be president. What does it say to young women? You can be intelligent, experienced, knowledgable, articulate, calm under pressure, and you won’t be president. If you try, you will be remorselessly criticised for things that are ignored in men. Very depressing. I hope I am wrong.
@Frosty, excuse me but what, exactly, do you feel optimistic about? Millions are about to lose access to health care in this country. Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security are about to be dismantled. The man we have now put in charge of the EEOC and ADA is a misogynist and a racist and a homophobe, mocks the disabled, and has no tolerance for any religion other than his own, whatever that is. And that’s just the domestic stuff.
Lightpurple, those are real probabilities, and more — i’m sure he’ll go after the national parks, we’ll have toll roads every few miles – he can do a lot of damage, especially the next 2 years. But some of what you mention – dismantling SS for instance-Hillary also planned to start dismantling. 3% of one’s paycheck would go into account that would be administered by a bank, like jp morgan, and you would get to choose from a menu of investments jpm would give you.
Obamacare I think will be reconfigured rather than repealed outright. It was concocted by the insurance companies and I don’t think they’ll tolerate eliminating the ACA.
My optimism stems from the possibility of reforming the democratic party and working toward putting Elizabeth Warren forward in 2020. To me, those are goals worth fighting for. I’m looking ahead and believe in us.
I ❤️ you Frosty. Definitely goals to keep in sight.
I’m really going to need for Kagan and Sotomayor to start working on an elaborate Weekend at Bernie’s plan with RBG. Hold on Ruth!!!!
To Lynne and everyone who was voting for the first time yesterday,
I know how you feel. 4 years ago, I voted in a presidential election in my country for the first time. The progressive candidate I supported didn’t won and we got stuck with an ignorant empowered stupid repressive clown. I was completely devastated, I knew it would be a rough 6 years which, I’m not going to lie, have been. Yet, I did learned a lot from that experience. I’m even more involved with politics now. We are a year and a half away for elections and I have big hopes.
I tell you all that because even I do know the pain you must be feeling, I don’t want you to give up on your people and your country. (It will be difficult and once in a while you’ll probably come across a Trump supported who is sorry that he/she voted for him…)
We are young voters who, I’m sure, will make a difference in the future. I have the hope that if we keep on working, we will make big changes. I do think good people outnumber the bad, and I think that’s a reason enough to wake up every day and try to do better.
So, live your grief. Cry. Be mad. Go through all that healing process and then go back to try to build a better society. Please don’t abandon your people, in my experience now is when the country has to stay more united.
Sending you big hugs from Mexico. We are good neighbors and we should have each other backs.
I am heartbroken that he won. Sick to my stomach, couldn’t sleep. But I still have to get up and work and pay my bills and live my life. I just hope we can all come together and try to focus on being kind and moving forward. And hoping that a better (by “better” I just mean one that isn’t so questionable for some voters) candidate is put forth in four years. I do believe if it had been Bernie this time around, it would’ve been a landslide. Too many people could not get past her history of scandals.
I’m a little relieved that Trump’s speech wasn’t ego-driven like I expected. I truly hope he proves us wrong and surprises us. It’s the only sliver of hope I can cling to. I try to remind myself that he was a Democrat just a few years ago….
I’m always a little “whatever” about politics and promises because they say whatever gets them in the White House/Senate/Etc and then just do whatever they want anyway and not too much of it actually benefits us peasants.
A grand tour on facebook revealed so many people with sexist remarks about Clinton. And all of them are men, surprise surprise. One of them is a well-known translator here in Vietnam. He screamed about fake American democracy, Hillary should be locked blah blah. Nevermind that our country has never been a democracy. The crazy fact is that so many people, both men and women, supported his stance. I want to puke. I’m sure I will never by a fucking book translated by him.
Now I know the feeling of being a liberal feminist in a fucking conservative society.
If the democratic party can forego attacking voters and take the lesson, they can stage a comeback. IF they can muster the courage to acknowledge the role their own policies played in this debacle.

The Simpsons predicted this 16 years ago. We all laughed…now we cry. Is this real life? How could this happen? HOWWW????
From the Netherlands I can only produce these words with my keyboard: I have now statistical evidence that a large percentage of Americans are dumber than dumb and really have either no brains or empty minds. America you have put yourself on the scoreboard and I feel no reservation whatsoever to tell you that it’s impossible to take countryside Americans serious any longer. You are what you vote. Good luck with President Trump, hotel owner, provocative personage, uninformed, racist, sexist, no style, how low can you go.
His behaviour will never ever make him a serious president for us, I’m sorry, but the next 4 years I forget America on the map.
Let’s hope everyone else does the same and America will cease to be relevant to the world. It’s a good opportunity for Europe to learn independence because no sane leader wants to be dependant on a country that willingly selects a north korean charicature.
Man, that hurts………
from NYC.
Let us revisit the Law of Cause and Effect:
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
As dire an immediate future as the world/USA seems be embarking on today, I believe with this election, the United States will sprout some unknown (today) heroes and activists in the years to come who swing the pendulum back. I still have hope.
So glad to come here this morning. Have to type through tears. We may disagree here on things celeb: Cumberbatch, Angie/Brad etc; but this today is the one place I feel safest. Hold me CBers!
I’ve been over it in my mind a million times since last night. Did we not take him seriously enough? Were the wrong points not emphasized (there goes the Supreme Court)? Did the Dems fight too “cleanly”. The pundits will have to analyze, I can’t make sense of it.
All I know is: I have relatives who live in the Rust Belt who support Trump. They have lived there all their lives, watched their standard of living eek away, hard drugs invade their once-simple towns, their schools erode and jobs disappear. They have been angry and hurting a long time, genuinely. There are real problems there.
Of course you explain how HRC would be the obvious better choice for them, but all they saw (or chose to see) was a privileged, educated East Coast woman who’d been part of the Establishment a long time and was part of their problem. Trump – although they admitted uncouth and unpalatable – tapped into their anger and sadness. No amount of discussion could move the needle for them and they all turned out to vote in droves. What to say?
Hugs to everyone suffering today. We’ll carry on somehow.
I could understand their economic plight and decreased life standard. But that is not an excuse to lash out their anger at minorities, immigrants and gays. And they always vote against their own interests, they keep electing Republicans who didn’t do anything to improve their life. I blame ignorance.
Yes, taking decisions out of anger and hate. Real sensible and Understandable.
Sorry. Just No.
I’m thankful for this site. I need a place where I can express my horror, confusion and depression about this.
Come on now, everyone said to support Obama as he was president even if you don’5 like him or voted for him. I did not like Trump, but I can support him as he was the elected official.
But I also think people missed the signs. Republicans won seats in the last mid term election in democratic states. Brexit. He had more people show up enthused at his rallies than hers. Many people did not vote for him as much as they voted against her and the status quo. He just tapped into that sentiment and to his credit, his speech was gracious. People need to chill.
There’s no obligation to endorse a racist, a facist or a misoginist, elected or not. Obama was none of those things. Trump is all of them. In fact, there is a moral obligation not to endorse them.
Wait till president Trump, the GesTrumpo and his gold shirts implement stop-and-frisk via crotch groping.
I raised a kind of gloomy laugh at that Masco!
Could not get out of bed. Too depressed.😢
last Friday I read a piece in the NYT showing graphs of the US since 2004 and how the republicans have taken more and more control of the country (mainly the rural counties, who made such a difference last night). When I saw that my heart sank, although I still thought Hillary could pull it off. It seems to me that the country as a whole is moving further and further to the right and the democrats are losing more and more ground. Let’s hope there’s a white knight (no gender preference implied) who can come along and lead us out of this. Do you realize that in today’s climate JFK certainly couldn’t have been elected based on his womanizing and health issues. Heck, even FDR wouldn’t be elected because he wasn’t “whole”, being wheelchair bound.
In fairness though the democratic party itself has to shoulder the blame here – this from Thomas Frank, who wrote What’s the Matter with Kansas. It’s from July but even more relevant now, imo.
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/jul/28/hillary-clinton-donald-trump-voters-republicans-democrats
Another thing is how the US Supreme Court has so weakened the application of the Voting Rights Act. In certain states there’s outright discrimination against minority areas and invidious campaigns to make it much harder for these voters to get to the polling booth.
Trump will be able to nominate an extremist to the SC (since Scalia died in Feb), making the SC more right wing than ever.
Serious question to people on here from Sweden, Norway, or Finland: if you are familiar with your paths to immigration, could you share what you know? I will do my research, too, but I was getting some stuff together for a German citizenship of a family member recently, and found that a lot of laws exist only in the native language, with only the most general one being available in English, which sometimes makes it hard to know for sure whether you qualify or not.
http://www.migrationsverket.se/English/Startpage.html 🙂
What most frightens me about this is that Trump leaving would mean Pence becomes president. Pence shares all of Trump’s beleifs and he’s even more dangerous because he actually knows what he’s doing.
You know what’s weird I was just thinking something similar. For some reason I don’t see Trump finishing even one year in office let alone four…I see Pence as president. I don’t know I just think Trump didn’t know what he was getting in to. He just wanted to beat Hilary so he could throw it in her face. Now he’s realizing he actually has to run a country…I don’t think he’s going to do it.
Whether Trump holds the office of POTUS or not, it will really be Pence running the country, making all of the decisions at the executive level. *shudders at what I just wrote*
The election has already torn apart my family. Yes, I can stay and fight the good fight. I live in Los Angeles and this feels like the seventh rung of hell. Bill Maher called it correctly last Friday and right now he’s one of the only people I want to hear from. Crickets. How to move forward? This isn’t GWB. This is the end of progress, equal representation, equal rights, freedom, and the constitution most of all. This is not an America that I want, but it’s also a state of mind that I cannot live in without daily fear and disgust. If this had all gone the other way I now see clearly that the majority of our society would not have been content. This was coming to the US sooner or later,
Gonna be drunk the next four years! No but seriously I am heavily medicated right now that is the only reason I am not crying. Thank you Zoloft.
Just simply devastating. Shocked and disillusioned.
Thanks so much Susan Ping Pong Champ Sarandon I hope you and the bagina you didn’t vote with are feeling smug and comfy this morning. I’ll be boycotting you and your goofy looking children projects till the end of my time.
If Hillary had gotten every Jill Stein vote she still wouldn’t have been close to winning the electoral college.
“Never stop believing that fighting for what’s right is worth it.” Hillary Clinton
The problem is this country is on the brink of its second civil war. The fall of Rome didn’t happen over night. RIP USA.
This:
Morning After To-Do List:
1. Take over the Democratic Party and return it to the people. They have failed us miserably.
2. Fire all pundits, predictors, pollsters and anyone else in the media who had a narrative they wouldn’t let go of and refused to listen to or acknowledge what was really going on. Those same bloviators will now tell us we must “heal the divide” and “come together.” They will pull more hooey like that out of their ass in the days to come. Turn them off.
3. Any Democratic member of Congress who didn’t wake up this morning ready to fight, resist and obstruct in the way Republicans did against President Obama every day for eight full years must step out of the way and let those of us who know the score lead the way in stopping the meanness and the madness that’s about to begin.
4. Everyone must stop saying they are “stunned” and “shocked”. What you mean to say is that you were in a bubble and weren’t paying attention to your fellow Americans and their despair. YEARS of being neglected by both parties, the anger and the need for revenge against the system only grew. Along came a TV star they liked whose plan was to destroy both parties and tell them all “You’re fired!” Trump’s victory is no surprise. He was never a joke. Treating him as one only strengthened him. He is both a creature and a creation of the media and the media will never own that.
5. You must say this sentence to everyone you meet today: “HILLARY CLINTON WON THE POPULAR VOTE!” The MAJORITY of our fellow Americans preferred Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump. Period. Fact. If you woke up this morning thinking you live in an effed-up country, you don’t. The majority of your fellow Americans wanted Hillary, not Trump. The only reason he’s president is because of an arcane, insane 18th-century idea called the Electoral College. Until we change that, we’ll continue to have presidents we didn’t elect and didn’t want. You live in a country where a majority of its citizens have said they believe there’s climate change, they believe women should be paid the same as men, they want a debt-free college education, they don’t want us invading countries, they want a raise in the minimum wage and they want a single-payer true universal health care system. None of that has changed. We live in a country where the majority agree with the “liberal” position. We just lack the liberal leadership to make that happen (see: #1 above).
Let’s try to get this all done by noon today.
— Michael Moore
I ♥ this. Thanks for sharing.
Preach.
This is amazingly on target. I’d nitpick a sentence or two in section 3……but yes very strongly to the rest of it. Both parties failed. The media failed–Report news and facts, don’t try and be the news
I am sad today. I am more sad for people of color and LGBTQ than myself. But the election is over and we will have to move forward.
Here’s the thing. There were definitely the “deplorable” Trump voters that showed up. But we can’t fool ourselves to think everyone who voted for Trump is an inherently bad person. I know many good people who voted Trump even though they didn’t like him in many cases. Blue states turned red. There’s more to this story that I don’t fully understand yet.
Right now I am just going to love my family and community and hopefully everyone can be kinder to one another. I want a breather from the madness.
I’m upset about the outcome of this election but I’m an American before I’m a democrat and it’s going to take more than this election to rid me of my patriotism.
Love each other.
Here’s where the rubber meets the road. If you voted for Trump and you don’t like ‘everything’ he stands for, can I count on you to speak up or do the right thing when it’s inconvenient because it’s the right thing to do? (ie:speaking up when people who look like you are being racist/misogynist or homophobic?) Seeing the election results that we’re discussing, I think the answer to that is no. Those who voted for Trump will probably watch quietly if doing what is right doesn’t directly benefit them. So now, let’s ask again what that makes them?
At least we all agreed we wanted to legalize marijuana
#MakeAmericaGreatAgain
It’s probably the only issue that both parties seem to agree on.
Honestly, I disliked both candidates. And I feel that if Bernie had been the democratic candidate, he would have won, given the scandal that arose for Clinton in regards to her emails. I understand why Trump won, even if I don’t agree with it myself. There is one thing that polarizes a lot of people, and that’s liars. Given what has been released, and I know it is biased, Clinton hasn’t been forthright in a lot of things. So for many people. liars are the worst of the worst. Then there are a lot more people then most want to admit to, that are really honestly getting tired of the level of political correctness the US has gotten to. My opinion will likely not be popular amongst those here on CB, but even I am really getting fed up with it. I am a first generation born American. I didn’t speak a lick of English until I hit 1st grade. I’ve been called so many derogatory Asian names, I have lost count. I am liberal and conservative. But what I can’t fathom, and probably will never, is how people are offended by things such as a hair style. We are a melting pot of many cultures, and throughout history, people of all colors have adopted parts of other cultures. The mixing of cultures should be embraced. That doesn’t mean that I think caricatures of a certain ethnic group is right. I just feel like there are some things people are too hyper offended by, when their shouldn’t be. To me, those asinine arguments promote segregation more then equality. It is basically having the opposite effect of what many really want. And the same goes for a lot of polarizing issues within the US now, such as the BLM. Right or wrong, there are many (I am not stating my opinion on this, but an observation) that see the irony in it. Each side condemning the other side for the exact same issues… Blaming the whole of each side, based on the select few bad ones. Then there is the topic of the pledge of allegiance, and other things deemed “traditional”. So I understand why he won, because though Trump says some ignorant, dumb things, there are many that quietly dislike how segregated the country has become because of political correctness, and for those that dislike it, Trump appealed to them with his “make America great” campaign. You would be surprised at the amount of immigrants that love the simple traditions in the US, that many deem inappropriate now. They just quietly don’t say much. So what it boils down to is, put a man that continually word vomits and has no filter, against a liar, and most will quietly choose the one that doesn’t lie. This whole presidential election was chaos. I can only hope for the best for the next four years, and hope the world doesn’t laugh at us too much.
Please in for office in the future. You are spot on and admirable in your assessment . Thank you.
Interesting perspective and I enjoyed reading your post. However, on “choose the one that doesn’t lie,” there was some viral website counting the number of times Trump has lied vs HC (during campaign) and he has definitely beaten Hillary on that point as well.
Here’s the website:
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/lists/people/comparing-hillary-clinton-donald-trump-truth-o-met/
“…most will quietly choose the one that doesn’t lie”? TRUMP doesn’t lie? You must be taking the you know what.
President Donald Trump. we have to say that for the next 4 years!! I have not been able to sleep or eat.
I’ll never refer to him as President. Never. Not even if I was held at gunpoint by Putin and I know how bloodthirsty that guy is. Pull the trigger, Vlad! I’m ready.
I didnt elect him. He is the same trash he was on Monday.
He will be impeached before 2018.
I’ve had many friends texting me today “never thought I’d think better of GWB”. Trump makes him looks like a raging liberal in comparison.
I’ve watched the clips from last night and the only comfort I take – small one I know – is how subdued Trump was and how quiet and downright scared his family looked. Like the weight of the world suddenly dropped onto them (well they asked for it). They have little experience in this area and it’s going to be a very, very hard & bumpy ride. Good luck.
In celeb news, just saw Michael Buble’s little boy has liver cancer, of all god awful things. That is a very difficult type of cancer to fight, even in adults. Just pointing it out to remind us about the other things in life that matter. We will endure no matter what.
All I can add is “AAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!” This isn’t getting any better as the day goes on.
I can’t believe this has happened. I’m Canadian and what happens in the US affects us all. Donald Trump after 8 years of Obama…..and after 8 years of Michelle as First Lady and now Melania Trump!?!? My heart breaks for us all.
Unfortunately, presidential succession includes president elects, and the electoral college are sworn to follow their state’s results regardless of the validity of the candidate. ECs have voted for men who died between the election and the EC vote in December. When a president elect is no longer viable for the position, then presidential succession goes into play: first the vice-president elect, then the speaker of the House, the Senate’s president pro tempore, and on. There is no way the election can be flipped for Hillary to enter the White House, no matter how badly we might want it.
Interesting reading comments from people around the world who also have a$$hat haters in leadership. Not to be that person, but something wicked this way comes. Something terrible is gonna happen on a global scale. We’ve all just been set up for it. There’s nowhere to run. In North America, South America, Asia, Africa and Europe there’s right wing nutters running key countries. How’s Turnbull doing in Australia? Is Australia ok?
We haven’t learned from history. We’re doomed to repeat it. God help us.
The only one who seems more depressed than most people here about his election, is his WIFE. Who wants to bet Ivanka will be doing most of the White House hostess duties, while Melanie spends more time in NYC with her son who’s “at school.” I sensed she was tired of it all with Donald, a few years back when she was on the “Apprentice” briefly in the intro episode, holding baby Barren. The look of her face……..not good.
Remember Bess Truman spend more time in Missouri than at the White House with her husband Harry. She hated being first lady. As far as his election all I have to say is “Mr.Trump, don’t bungle it up! Remember Richard Nixon. The American people can put you in The White House are the same American people can put you out! Including the ones that voted for you!”
WOO HOO !!
YAY ! America !
Just watched both Clinton’s and Trump’s speeches. Must say Clinton is a class act. And I also have to say – Trump’s speech was better than I expected. At least he said he’ll try to be a President for all and stop the divisiveness. Makes me hope a lot of his rhetoric was just that, and what he actually does will not be as drastic.
If he pulled a Jedi mind trick on America, I stg…
But really, I think he’s as awful as he’s shown us. Nobody is that good of an actor.
yah, you’re probably right. trying to find a silver lining!
White people have woken up. Nothing wrong with that.
Let’s see 4 years down the line…….
Woken up from what? What should they be doing that they weren’t?
Sure. White people of the mouth-breathing, duck dynasty ilk got their way. Which is it’s all about us white folk. Trump has lit a fire of racial hatred, oppression of minorities and women, and jingoistic intransigence the likes of which haven’t been seen since the 1960’s. If you don’t understand some of the words I’ve used, look them up. Educate yourself. Because the next 4 years are going to be UGLY.
We recieved proof last night there is no GOD.
Wow, that bad?
I think about half of the US population disagrees with you… Or would be saying the same thing if the result was the other way round.
Yes it IS as bad as all that. Half the population of the US are morons.
Sounds like your in the basket to.
I’m proud to hail from New Jersey= DARK BLUE
Sending positive thoughts to the US. I thought Hillary’s speech was very well written. Wherever you are in the world, as a leftie / centre leftie / progressive / liberal, please commit to befriending at least one right winger in the coming 12 months and gently turning them. No matter how ignorant, bigoted, racist, etc, they are make it one of your life goals to turn them or even just open their mind. At the same time, keep campaigning for free, quality public education. Don’t let the idiots ruin the world for you and for posterity.
My heart is broken.
Karma is going to kick the butts of the American people right back to the civil war. In four years, America will be known as The New Syria (or what will remain of it). RIP USA. Nice to known ya.
God! I don’t have any words for this. We are about to enter the III World War. At this time, we should know better, as human beings.
There’s a reason I come here. And it’s not celebrity news.
I’m a 24 year old lady (I don’t like saying woman because I feel like a child) and this has made me so scared. I’ve cried all day. I don’t think I want to have kids after this. I can’t imagine bringing them into this world. Also, my father even looked at me 10 minutes ago and said ‘you need to make your doctors appointments because after 2017, you won’t have insurance’. Now that is so sad.
Since late last night, I have felt as if someone or something died. Full on fetal position for most of the day. I need to mourn what was good and bright in this country, before I come back fighting arseholes like tRump. or as I call him now, “the one that shall not be named”.
My apologies to the whole world, no exceptions.
The outcome was inevitable after the DNC sabotaged the true Democratic candidate – Senator Bernie Sanders.
Please do not lose sleep over the election: Mr. Trump does not hate women, Muslims etc., because he loves himself so much that there is no room for anyone else.
We were not astonished, for the People will be heard, one way or the other. Everything will be okay.
The US election has taught me 2 lessons
lesson 1 No matter how orange or inept you are as long as your willing to grab em by the pussy your gold.
lesson 2 all it takes to be a republican is Jesus and a dead homosexual.
well done America you just made the world a more dangerous place
Someone asked how did the Democrats get it so wrong.
If you are out of work and can’t pay your mortgage, and if your house is foreclosed you worked so hard on, but then have to move your family in with relatives; if your husband, son or daughter comes home from Iraq or Afghanistan with an eye blown out, brain damage, missing limbs, or in a casket, you will reconsider everything.
It’s all very well to yuck it up with the celebrities or musicians for a night, but then the next morning real life intrudes.
Trump is a SHIT STAIN in American History
Should be on a 🎩
We’ll get through this.

Next midterm election is in two years. Let’s pick ourselves up and get to work.
