Here are some photos of Michael Shannon at the New York premiere of Nocturnal Animals. He’s so deliciously creepy-looking, isn’t he? That being said, I would hit it so hard. He’s incredibly sexy and very watchable. As we discussed before, Shannon has been doing press for his Oscar-bait films, and unfortunately for him, all of his interviews were scheduled for just after the election. Fortunately for us, Shannon has run out of f—ks to give, and he’s been giving a series of take-no-prisoners interviews in which he assesses the state of the country and the current political climate in obscene and glorious ways. Shannon was asked at this premiere whether he felt regret about his political statements and he said:
“Ah, yeah, and there’s nothing to lose by speaking out these days, really. Who really cares what I think or what I say anyway? I have absolutely no influence or power whatsoever. I’m not saying it makes me feel better, but why not?” Shannon added, “I’ve heard a lot of people saying, ‘Oh, we should give [Trump] a chance, it’s not that bad.’ And I’m like, ‘No, you’re wrong. Just look at the news. It is that bad.’”
I pretty much agree. I agreed with his interview on rogerebert.com too. And he also spoke to Metro post-election and these quotes… he’s so biting and angry. I love it. Some highlights:
On Pres. Trump: “I’m on tenterhooks here. I have two young children. Basically this man is probably going to destroy the earth and civilization as we know it. It’s kind of terrifying.”
He doesn’t think the protests will do much: “That’s the thing: These protests are so moving, but ultimately what are they going to accomplish? I’m so glad these kids on the campuses everywhere are going ape s—, but at the end of the day the guy’s still going to be president. Maybe you need a civil war or something.”
You can’t avoid talking about politics: “No, it’s unavoidable. It should be talked about constantly. It should be the only thing anyone talks about”
The wall: “The wall isn’t between the U.S. and Mexico; the wall is between people who voted for Trump and people who didn’t. And we’ve got to do something about it. I don’t want to live in a country where people voted for Trump. I want to live in some other f—ing country. But I don’t want to run away. So we’re just going to have to bust this thing up.
On older voters: “There’s a lot of old people who need to realize they’ve had a nice life, and it’s time for them to move on. Because they’re the ones who go out and vote for these a–holes. If you look at the young people, between 18 and 25, if it was up to them Hillary would have been president. No offense to the seniors out there. My mom’s a senior citizen. But if you’re voting for Trump, it’s time for the urn.
What to do if your parents voted for Trump: “F— ’em. You’re an orphan now. Don’t go home. Don’t go home for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Don’t talk to them at all. Silence speaks volumes. Thank god no one in my immediate family would ever remotely consider voting for Trump…That’s the tragic thing about Kentucky: There’s two cities in Kentucky that are filled with intelligent, vibrant people. And then there’s the rest of it. But my mom is a super cool and intelligent lady. She was a pollster; she was helping people vote. She told me about this old woman who walked in and needed help voting. My mom had to stand there and watch this woman vote for Trump. Then she turned around and said, “How do I make sure my vote gets counted? I want to make sure. I don’t want this conspiracy to happen.” Because that’s the ironic thing: On that day there were so many Trump voters who were saying, “I voted for Trump, but it doesn’t make a difference because they got it rigged anyway.” Yeah, they sure f—ing do, don’t they? F—in’ A, man.
“But if you’re voting for Trump, it’s time for the urn” – something very similar happened with the Brexit vote, didn’t it? The majority of young people came out and voted to Bremain, but the older people voted for Brexit, and people were like “this barely even affects you, you’re not even going to face the long-term consequences of this.” That’s the complaint Shannon is making rather brutally but effectively. I’m so proud of the fact that my mom voted for Hillary Clinton too! And yeah… I agree with pretty much everything Michael Shannon says. He should run for president. Why not?

I’m not mad at him. I actually feel the way he does. I still say middle finger up to all the people who voted for Trump. It says a lot about their character. I even have friends who are Republicans and they know how I feel about it. One of my closest friends and her husband living in NH are Republicans but even they said they didn’t vote for that orange piece of garbage. I don’t know if they were just trying to save face because everybody else in our circle of friends are Democrats but my friend is not known for lying on issues like this. She voted for McCain and had no problem saying it.
Like I said before I wouldn’t have been so angry if another Republican had won such as Rubio or Kasich. Just the thought of this man sitting in the Oval Office chair with his trophy wife and smug ass children standing beside him gives me chills and cause to be alarm. They are all deplorable.
You are right, I think thpse who voted for Trump are missing the big picture, presidents have very limited authority when it comes to tax policy, or allocation of money. If you want change then you can’t reelect all Republican incumbents and expect change. Trump is going to quickly find out that talking about being president is far different from the reality of it.
Trump has done one thing positive, and that is to shine a light on all the veteran congressmen who are patronizing the Corporate America in effect keeping their jobs. These people are the cause of all the problems in this country, all the inequities, the massive tax burden put upon the dying middle class and the poor. Its up to the people to change that not put some idiot that has made billions of dollars on the backs of the voters by not paying taxes, by ruining small businesses by creating this racist rift. For some reason, politicians and Trump wants to have a villain, in 1930s Germany it was Jews. In current day America, it’s the Mexicans, or immigrants it’s never the very people who control the purse strings congress. If the tax code is unfair, that because congress wants it that way, if wages are stagnant it because congress wants it that way, if were in a 14 and counting year war, its because congress wants it that way.
We all have been left behind congress has failed everyone of us not just whites who see their hold oh society changing, no president is going to change that. But going backwards, that isn’t the best way to go, we as a country need to move forward.

This is the kind of tough talk needed from the left wing, quite frankly. We’re too nice to the people who actively hate us and we waste too much time bickering among ourselves (hello DNC). It’s time to get very real about what’s at stake here. It’s time to channel the palpable anger that’s out here. Let’s rebuild our machine and prepare to throw the bums out beginning in 2018 or sooner depending on how many crimes we can catch Trump and company committing.
I will say I do thing the protests serve a purpose. At the very least, they know we’re watching and we’re pissed. They will get no blank check, even with their Congressional majorities and the presidency. Let’s keep our heels dug in.

Speaking of crimes- on Democracy Now!- and that’s no BS source- THE ORANGE THING is set to go ON TRIAL for his fraudulent TRUMP (POS) UNIVERSITY. His shame sucking lawyers are trying to 1) delay the trial until after the inauguration and 2) send a video taped deposition of the orange POS instead of him having to deign to appear in court like the rest of us peasants. Yes, Kaiser, the oldies were one of the most significant demographics for the Leave vote. Also, the demographic whose income has been most protected under the post-2010 austerity regime. We got our first snow here in the high desert of ColoRADo too! It’ll be gone tomorrow, but it has made a lovely blanket of white everywhere and I’m finally getting psyched for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Since my family is divided on their political loyalties — which pretty much fall along gender lines — I’m glad that we’ve agreed not to talk about it so we can still enjoy each other’s company. Neither side will convince the other of its rightness; opinions are too entrenched. To me, politics aren’t worth losing the important people in your life. It just means they’ll have no idea the lengths I’m going to to effect the changes they’re afraid of in the country.
The Sixlets have just got in and feel snow should happen on Mondays – if it settles and we end up cut off, they don’t have to go to school. Fridays suck for snow in their world. Not in mine!
I don’t have anyone with dodgy politics in my family. I don’t know what I would do if I did but I do think I would find it nigh-on impossible to cut them off. But perhaps I might find it easier if they did have awful politics? I am glad I don’t have to make the choice.

There’s been a good few column inches written about the reactionary nature of the senior demographic here – especially since that idiot Cameron didn’t let 16-year-olds have the vote in the referendum, unlike the Scots in the independence referendum. Those kids might have swung it.

I live (I think) in a more northern part than you and we got… a ton of hail today! Unfair, half of the garden is now destroyed…..
I’m in Devon. On the top of a big hill. So if it snows heavily, we get cut off because the little country lanes to get to the bottom of the hill can’t take it and we are last in line for the gritters.
I live near the Scottish borders and Lake District not far away either… so plenty of mountains here but we don’t get much snow, strange isn’t it?
Unfortunately we do get a ton of rainfall…. hopefully no floods this year!
At least you have the gritters. We don’t get any and when it snows, even one inch, we have to do by ourselves. Council budgets have been slashed to nothing so we all have stocks of grit salt for the winter.
Here in Toronto, we might get our first snow on Sunday …. probably snain (snow/rain, feel free to use my word LOLLLL) and I’m so psyched – even if it doesn’t stay. We had nothing last year. My snow shoes are lonely.

I feel so bad about getting mad about the olds sometimes because one day I will (hopefully) be old, too. But man it is sometimes hard. My grandma told me that usually if an old person is a really grumpy old jerk (or racist, homophobic, sexist) they were most likely always like that- getting old doesn’t just cause you to become an asshole.

Coming in late on this thread but, really … while there IS unquestionably a significant % of the old ones who are very conservative/greedy and deserve whatever you can throw at them. I’m not one of them; I voted for Hillary and was probably one of 3 or 4 people in my SC county who did so. It is not fun to live amongst the groups who either voted for Trump OR — which in my opinion is equally damning — didn’t vote at all or voted 3rd party. In essence, that enabled a Trump win and this was simply not a time to ‘vote with your conscience’ if that meant not voting for Trump’s opponent. I am also very straightforward about my beliefs, values, positions on the issues so don’t have a great many friends in my neighborhood, needless to say. So, I just ask you to settle down a little and remember that surfaces do not always reflect their interiors…
My parents are 75 and voted for Trump. Meanwhile, their grandchildren are 7 and 12 years old. That being said, plenty of the adults in my family within the ages of 20 to 50, also voted for this idiot.
I have never gotten along with most of my family. They were pretty screwed up long before Trump showed up.

In general I tend to think that people in their 30s-50s are the ones with the most knowledge and level headedness about them. College kids & new graduates tend to think they know everything, and from my experience once people hit their 60s it’s all about their needs and a return to “the good ole’ days”. I have met few people past the age of 60 who aren’t the smartest person in a room at all times. But at the same time my opinion is just as generalized and stereotypical as his. At least I’m self aware of it:)

It goes like this: you are old so move along grandpa, do not vote because you will die anyway and won’ t have to carry the burden of that decision. Not going to work as long as voting is universal. It would be much better if the politicians tried to understand different people and their perspectives. So that’s an insult and usually provokes an irrational and emotional response of doing more harm than good. The other thing is that after brexit young people really did took this argument to the next level and calculated how much the brexit will cost to young people because eldery will be dead by then. And this is the other point. Not everyone make their political decision based on profit and loss of money. The rationalisation is also behind the misscalculation of the results by democrats in this election. They thought that is is simply irrational to vote for Trump. Boom
Funny part is that I have spoken to many adults in their 60s, so they are boomers and many of them have said the only way for racism to lessen is when the older bigot generation dies off. Boomers grew up during the civil rights movement. Some of them weren’t racist or learned to open their mind while others just stopped being racist in front of non whites and continued as before and got resentful that being racist isn’t acceptable any more. Those people will never change now according to them.
Daddy and I are boomers (late on the scale). We both voted for HRC, with an eye towards the negative impact a conservative SCOTUS would have on the rights of future generations. Not looking at the urn, yet, and still earning our keep.

No, you’re absolutely right. Hatred and bigotry is taught. Kids aren’t born hating people because they’re different. But on average, Generation X and Millennials like myself are more accepting of other races, religions, sexual preferences, etc. than the older generations. The more people in our age groups raising kids to be accepting of others and not being filled with fear, will make this country and world better. It’s just going to take a very long time I feel.

There are a lot of those teens on Instagram. I want to say um where did you learn all this about Hillary? My friend saw a teenager dressed up like Hillary in a prison jumpsuit trick or treating on Halloween. They also irrationally hated Obama because of their parents. When I was pregnant with my oldest, I was out in Pennsyltuckey (in other words not Philly- York to be exact) at an ice cream parlor. A little kid (7 maybe) stood up on his chair and said “Barrack Obama is a lyin n*gger” His mom started to giggle and then looked around. And I mean, these weren’t redneck looking people, they were preppy, upper class looking. I thought, I will never, ever have a child who says something like that because they thought I was ok with it. My daughter is about that kid’s age now and I still think of it.

Michael Shannon remains perfect and not a single lie was uttered. I’ve taken a twisted satisfaction in refusing to attend Thanksgiving dinner because we’re doing it this year with my sister’s SIL and her family who are ALL Trump supporters. I mean I was already pissed that our Thanksgiving was going to be ruined by sharing it with them but now I have a meaningful reason to not attend. My dog and I will be happily watching Netflix as we split a nice Smart Ones frozen turkey dinner. No regrets.
I think old people deserve the same rights as everyone else in this country. They too are protected by the 15th amendment even if people don’t agree with their votes. For me the urn comment = should die and I find that incredibly inappropriate. Those people have kids and grandkids..
I wish this country wasn’t so divided between a R’s and D’s. I was watching old debates for gov’t class last semester and things were not so hateful between candidates and things were not so divided between parties. It was quite fascinating actually. Moderation is key to everything. The way to stop politics from getting more extreme to the point where communism and crazy Theocracy are our options is to seek out moderation. Why do you all think Trump was elected? Because everyone is so ‘F you’ to the other party. Sigh.

Look deeper at why that Melania sign was there. It was the Trump campaign trying to discredit the protesters that were responsible. Lots of tricks being played by the Republicans and their supporters lapped it up.
I work in a SNF and it’s interesting to me to see them cast their vote when they don’t know what day it is and can’t even stay awake to watch the debates.
I’ve thought for a while now that votes should be pro-rated based on how old a person is. I’m sixty-two. Why should my vote count as much as my childrens votes, since are going to have to live with the consequences far long that I will? Of course, it’s the Trump older voters who would think they have so much “wisdom” and “experience” to grace the younger generation that it would be an abomination. But really, in a world with global warming, old people need to move out of the way.

If a right-leaning person said that exact same thing, you all would be screaming to high heaven about how cold-hearted the right is. I’ve been lurking for years, never thought my first comment would have been on a Michael Shannon post. I grew up in Louisville, KY and now live in Lexington. He’s 100% right- these two cities are full of progressive, intelligent people, and the rest of the state is blood red, and that will unfortunately never change.
It’s been very hard on me the last several months, knowing 99% of my family supported this monster.
Also, I talked my mom out of voting for trump. Good thing too, since we have a vacation scheduled together next month. Would have made the trip a little awkward if I wasn’t talking to her. 😜

I’m from one of those Kentucky cities he mentioned (Lexington) and the people here are friendly, progressive (we have a gay mayor) and forward-thinking. But go into southern Kentucky or eastern Kentucky and it feels like you could be reliving Deliverance.
Both of my parents are Trump voters in their 60s. I stilled laughed. This is a savage comment I would think but never say out loud. I always feel guilty thinking ill of old people since I will hopefully be an old person myself one day (kind of like how I don’t get how people say they hate children when we were all children at one point) , but I get it. They ate up Trump’s BS but may not be around to feel any negative impact from his policies.

Michelle and Hillary had too much faith in human decency and processing logic. When they went high, the voters didn’t give a damn. That’s why Hillary looks not so good. When you care too much, it hurts. It hurts.
Isn’t it funny how some of the first people to complain about there being too much ‘political correctness’ (usually code for not getting to treat someone as less than because of race, gender, ethnicity, or sexuality without their being some kind of consequence/criticism) and thin-skinned oversensitive ‘SJWs/libruls’ are often the first to whine about name-calling and negative opinions that come their way?

But then again, young people deserve the biggest slap of all for not voting in the first place. Brexit and Trump would NOT HAVE HAPPENED if young people voted at the same rates as older people. If you’re protesting now, but didn’t bother to vote in the first place, then you’re an effing idiot. Old people vote for what they perceive to be their interests, even if it is complete bullshit. Young people don’t vote because they are narcissistic, lazy or think they are oh-so-cynical and too cool to participate in a ‘corrupt’ system.

On another note, I find it fascinating how some (most?) people become more right-wing as they older, while others can and do change the other way.
My father was a conservative voter his entire life, but voted Labor for the first time in his life in his 80s when the (Australian) Liberal party became too right-wing. He was also in favour of gay marriage, despite (like most of his generation) being quite homophobic as a younger man.
I guess the difference is in older people still being interested in the world and willing to learn new things, not just clinging to old ‘certainties’ and living in the past. It IS incredibly selfish to condemn younger generations (e.g. climate change), when you’re not going to be around to see the consequences.
Not the words I would have used, but his bluntness and the fact that he seems to be one of the celebrities who gets the seriousness of this situation are refreshing.
And with all the insulting, threatening things Trump has said to people, (including calling for Hillary to be assassinated, bragging about sexually assaulting women, etc.) nobody who voted for or supports this man has ANY business being butthurt about the urn comment or lecturing other people on name-calling.

I ”enjoy” reading about politics on a celebrity site just as much as I ”enjoy” listening to Brandi Glanville talk about politics. Six election related stories on the front page. I get it – all Trump voters are rednecks (eye roll) and all Hillary voters are intellectuals (even bigger eye roll).
Damn straight. Hillary voters cared about minorities and the effect that a Trump presidency would have on minorities, women, POC, lgbtq, etc.
Trump voters didn’t. Doesn’t matter what class, what race. They put themselves and their egos first and stupidly so. They had no respect for our government. They had no respect for the job of President. None. Hillary voters cared about putting someone smart and qualified into office. Hillary voters respect this country and it’s traditions. Trump voters did not.
