Michael Shannon on seniors: ‘If you’re voting for Trump, it’s time for the urn’

wenn30445503

Here are some photos of Michael Shannon at the New York premiere of Nocturnal Animals. He’s so deliciously creepy-looking, isn’t he? That being said, I would hit it so hard. He’s incredibly sexy and very watchable. As we discussed before, Shannon has been doing press for his Oscar-bait films, and unfortunately for him, all of his interviews were scheduled for just after the election. Fortunately for us, Shannon has run out of f—ks to give, and he’s been giving a series of take-no-prisoners interviews in which he assesses the state of the country and the current political climate in obscene and glorious ways. Shannon was asked at this premiere whether he felt regret about his political statements and he said:

“Ah, yeah, and there’s nothing to lose by speaking out these days, really. Who really cares what I think or what I say anyway? I have absolutely no influence or power whatsoever. I’m not saying it makes me feel better, but why not?” Shannon added, “I’ve heard a lot of people saying, ‘Oh, we should give [Trump] a chance, it’s not that bad.’ And I’m like, ‘No, you’re wrong. Just look at the news. It is that bad.’”

[From EW]

I pretty much agree. I agreed with his interview on rogerebert.com too. And he also spoke to Metro post-election and these quotes… he’s so biting and angry. I love it. Some highlights:

On Pres. Trump: “I’m on tenterhooks here. I have two young children. Basically this man is probably going to destroy the earth and civilization as we know it. It’s kind of terrifying.”

He doesn’t think the protests will do much: “That’s the thing: These protests are so moving, but ultimately what are they going to accomplish? I’m so glad these kids on the campuses everywhere are going ape s—, but at the end of the day the guy’s still going to be president. Maybe you need a civil war or something.”

You can’t avoid talking about politics: “No, it’s unavoidable. It should be talked about constantly. It should be the only thing anyone talks about”

The wall: “The wall isn’t between the U.S. and Mexico; the wall is between people who voted for Trump and people who didn’t. And we’ve got to do something about it. I don’t want to live in a country where people voted for Trump. I want to live in some other f—ing country. But I don’t want to run away. So we’re just going to have to bust this thing up.

On older voters: “There’s a lot of old people who need to realize they’ve had a nice life, and it’s time for them to move on. Because they’re the ones who go out and vote for these a–holes. If you look at the young people, between 18 and 25, if it was up to them Hillary would have been president. No offense to the seniors out there. My mom’s a senior citizen. But if you’re voting for Trump, it’s time for the urn.

What to do if your parents voted for Trump: “F— ’em. You’re an orphan now. Don’t go home. Don’t go home for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Don’t talk to them at all. Silence speaks volumes. Thank god no one in my immediate family would ever remotely consider voting for Trump…That’s the tragic thing about Kentucky: There’s two cities in Kentucky that are filled with intelligent, vibrant people. And then there’s the rest of it. But my mom is a super cool and intelligent lady. She was a pollster; she was helping people vote. She told me about this old woman who walked in and needed help voting. My mom had to stand there and watch this woman vote for Trump. Then she turned around and said, “How do I make sure my vote gets counted? I want to make sure. I don’t want this conspiracy to happen.” Because that’s the ironic thing: On that day there were so many Trump voters who were saying, “I voted for Trump, but it doesn’t make a difference because they got it rigged anyway.” Yeah, they sure f—ing do, don’t they? F—in’ A, man.

[From Metro]

“But if you’re voting for Trump, it’s time for the urn” – something very similar happened with the Brexit vote, didn’t it? The majority of young people came out and voted to Bremain, but the older people voted for Brexit, and people were like “this barely even affects you, you’re not even going to face the long-term consequences of this.” That’s the complaint Shannon is making rather brutally but effectively. I’m so proud of the fact that my mom voted for Hillary Clinton too! And yeah… I agree with pretty much everything Michael Shannon says. He should run for president. Why not?

He really doesn’t give a damn, and I love it.

    • V4Real says:

I’m not mad at him. I actually feel the way he does. I still say middle finger up to all the people who voted for Trump. It says a lot about their character. I even have friends who are Republicans and they know how I feel about it. One of my closest friends and her husband living in NH are Republicans but even they said they didn’t vote for that orange piece of garbage. I don’t know if they were just trying to save face because everybody else in our circle of friends are Democrats but my friend is not known for lying on issues like this. She voted for McCain and had no problem saying it.

Like I said before I wouldn’t have been so angry if another Republican had won such as Rubio or Kasich. Just the thought of this man sitting in the Oval Office chair with his trophy wife and smug ass children standing beside him gives me chills and cause to be alarm. They are all deplorable.

      • james young says:

You are right, I think thpse who voted for Trump are missing the big picture, presidents have very limited authority when it comes to tax policy, or allocation of money. If you want change then you can’t reelect all Republican incumbents and expect change. Trump is going to quickly find out that talking about being president is far different from the reality of it.

Trump has done one thing positive, and that is to shine a light on all the veteran congressmen who are patronizing the Corporate America in effect keeping their jobs. These people are the cause of all the problems in this country, all the inequities, the massive tax burden put upon the dying middle class and the poor. Its up to the people to change that not put some idiot that has made billions of dollars on the backs of the voters by not paying taxes, by ruining small businesses by creating this racist rift. For some reason, politicians and Trump wants to have a villain, in 1930s Germany it was Jews. In current day America, it’s the Mexicans, or immigrants it’s never the very people who control the purse strings congress. If the tax code is unfair, that because congress wants it that way, if wages are stagnant it because congress wants it that way, if were in a 14 and counting year war, its because congress wants it that way.

We all have been left behind congress has failed everyone of us not just whites who see their hold oh society changing, no president is going to change that. But going backwards, that isn’t the best way to go, we as a country need to move forward.

    • Radley says:

He’s so salty, I love it. Let’s laugh and cry together, Michael.

This is the kind of tough talk needed from the left wing, quite frankly. We’re too nice to the people who actively hate us and we waste too much time bickering among ourselves (hello DNC). It’s time to get very real about what’s at stake here. It’s time to channel the palpable anger that’s out here. Let’s rebuild our machine and prepare to throw the bums out beginning in 2018 or sooner depending on how many crimes we can catch Trump and company committing.

I will say I do thing the protests serve a purpose. At the very least, they know we’re watching and we’re pissed. They will get no blank check, even with their Congressional majorities and the presidency. Let’s keep our heels dug in.

      • Pipsqueak says:

I totally agree. I’m watching people on facebook call people narcissists for “engaging in the politics of difference”– so what, you have all the sympathy for people who are either racist or ignorant and no sympathy for people who are pissed off and unwilling to cling to the unlikely possibility this guy won’t plunge us into another recession?

      • LoveIsBlynd says:

Speaking of crimes- on Democracy Now!- and that’s no BS source- THE ORANGE THING is set to go ON TRIAL for his fraudulent TRUMP (POS) UNIVERSITY. His shame sucking lawyers are trying to 1) delay the trial until after the inauguration and 2) send a video taped deposition of the orange POS instead of him having to deign to appear in court like the rest of us peasants. (I believe this will be tried by the same judge BTW who the trumped up fool said would be “biased” because his grandparents were from Mexico- this last part is from memory- have to check this)

    • Tourmaline says:

God I love this. This is even better than yesterday’s thoughts from Michael Shannon.

“No offense to the seniors out there. My mom is a senior citizen.” Never stop, Michael Shannon.

    • SilverUnicorn says:

I actually became a fan in the last two days!!

    • susiecue says:

My God I enjoyed the shit out of that!

“The wall isn’t between the U.S. and Mexico; the wall is between people who voted for Trump and people who didn’t. And we’ve got to do something about it. I don’t want to live in a country where people voted for Trump. I want to live in some other f—ing country. But I don’t want to run away. So we’re just going to have to bust this thing up.”

      Love that especially.

      • Hehehe says:

What he advocating is ageism. Not cool!!

      • Who ARE These People? says:

He’s not discriminating on the basis of age. It’s not discriminating against old people to observe they voted in large numbers for Trump. Time for the urn, however? I suspect if the numbers were reversed, he’d offer equal death wishes for young people — in an equally offensive way.

      • funfactor says:

My favorite was this part–it made me laugh when I thought I’d never laugh again: What to do if your parents voted for Trump: “F— ’em. And then there’s the rest of it.” Michael Shannon is a GEM.

    • LoveIsBlynd says:

The republican base is just blowing up over this guy’s comments. Now they are calling progressive sympathizers “prejudiced” and “not fair” “threatening” etc The spin. OH the spin. If we say ONE THING in defense of our POV we are labeled hideously- I was called an online “troll” for stating that I didn’t vote for the orange thing- NOT BECAUSE OF SUPPOSED MEDIA SPIN- BUT BECAUSE OF WHAT CAME STRAIGHT OUT OF IT’S MOUTH. I always engage with intelligence and decorum and that’s taken offensively too- “your education means nothing. Melania is a better person that Michelle” blah blah. The idiocy is like a cesspool- I’m afraid to visit anyplace that didn’t go deeply blue.

  2. Sixer says:

I think I might be falling in love with this man.

Yes, Kaiser, the oldies were one of the most significant demographics for the Leave vote. Also, the demographic whose income has been most protected under the post-2010 austerity regime. Selfish bastards. BUT NOT MR SIXER SENIOR. So I still get to talk to him at Christmas and not just to inform him that he’s urn-ready, either. Phew.

PS: I would put this on a lighthearted post but since there isn’t one today about anyone I know anything about, can I just say… it is snowing in Sixerville! I love snow. Even when it cuts off the village. It’s a mere straw to clutch at in this midden we find ourselves in, I know, but SNOW!

    • Bonzo says:

We got our first snow here in the high desert of ColoRADo too! It’ll be gone tomorrow, but it has made a lovely blanket of white everywhere and I’m finally getting psyched for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Since my family is divided on their political loyalties — which pretty much fall along gender lines — I’m glad that we’ve agreed not to talk about it so we can still enjoy each other’s company. Neither side will convince the other of its rightness; opinions are too entrenched. To me, politics aren’t worth losing the important people in your life. It just means they’ll have no idea the lengths I’m going to to effect the changes they’re afraid of in the country.

      • Sixer says:

The Sixlets have just got in and feel snow should happen on Mondays – if it settles and we end up cut off, they don’t have to go to school. Fridays suck for snow in their world. Not in mine!

I don’t have anyone with dodgy politics in my family. I don’t know what I would do if I did but I do think I would find it nigh-on impossible to cut them off. But perhaps I might find it easier if they did have awful politics? I am glad I don’t have to make the choice.

I think Bonzo lengths will be good lengths.

    • CornyBlue says:

I hope you dont mind but I am always so surprised to find an older Brit who is not racist and is actually progressive specialy among people who work in my field (finance) . The amount of bad experiences I have had with some of the older people still gives me night terrors. It is actually pretty great to hear about your family

      • Sixer says:

I don’t mind! All the elders in my family are rabid lefty revolutionaries, so I don’t take it personally. My dad has a potty mouth also, so his rants on Brexit and Trump are pretty much similar to Shannon’s.

There’s been a good few column inches written about the reactionary nature of the senior demographic here – especially since that idiot Cameron didn’t let 16-year-olds have the vote in the referendum, unlike the Scots in the independence referendum. Those kids might have swung it.

    • Lightpurple says:

SNOW! A reason to be cheerful! I love SNOW! Walking around here today without a jacket because, well, it couldn’t possibly be global warming or anything.

I adore Michael Shannon. I’ve decided to adopt his attitude.

      • Sixer says:

I’m calling this approach No Euphemisms R Us.

(Hoping you guys are ready for at least some humour of the gallows variety.)

    • SilverUnicorn says:

      @Sixer

Your dad rocks!! And I agree with your feelings about M. Shannon.

I live (I think) in a more northern part than you and we got… a ton of hail today! Unfair, half of the garden is now destroyed…..

      • Sixer says:

I’m in Devon. On the top of a big hill. So if it snows heavily, we get cut off because the little country lanes to get to the bottom of the hill can’t take it and we are last in line for the gritters.

      • SilverUnicorn says:

I live near the Scottish borders and Lake District not far away either… so plenty of mountains here but we don’t get much snow, strange isn’t it?
Unfortunately we do get a ton of rainfall…. hopefully no floods this year!
At least you have the gritters. We don’t get any and when it snows, even one inch, we have to do by ourselves. Council budgets have been slashed to nothing so we all have stocks of grit salt for the winter.

    • Pandy says:

Here in Toronto, we might get our first snow on Sunday …. probably snain (snow/rain, feel free to use my word LOLLLL) and I’m so psyched – even if it doesn’t stay. We had nothing last year. My snow shoes are lonely.

    • I Choose Me says:

      Get in line Sixer.

I read his entire quote with a smile on my face and felt buoyed somehow by his take no prisoners comments.

Also, you should totally check out his films. Start with Midnight Special, a very low key interesting film.

      Congrats on the snow.

      • Nic919 says:

I saw Nocturnal Animals at TIFF and his character is a scene stealer with some of the crustiness of this interview.

  3. Kitten says:

“But if you’re voting for Trump, it’s time for the urn.”

    LOLOL

Man, I am getting such a kick out of him. I love it.

*cue the cries from butt-hurt Republicans saying “THIS is why Trump won!”*

PLEASE miss me with that nonsense.

  4. Lyka says:

C’mon. Stahp. I’ve seen him perform live and the dude is unbelievably, heart-breakingly talented. But ultimately he’s a spoiled little artiste pondering aloud about a civil war (?!?!?) he’d never have to fight in. Please baby, no more celebrity presidential runs.

    • pf says:

Who says he wouldn’t be fighting if there was a civil war? I think he would. I think we *all* would. Sorry to sound dramatic but I’ve been predicting an American Civil War Part II since the Dubya years. You can’t have people this divided without shit happening. If you look at history it took *decades* to build up to that first civil war. And brothers did fight against brothers. I don’t think MS is acting like a spoiled little artiste, he’s speaking a certain kind of truth to what’s going on out there.

    • Radley says:

Why can’t people respect that artists and other successful (read: wealthy) people have opinions? Why shouldn’t they speak their mind? Why shouldn’t their opinions count?

His success in his chosen vocation is a good thing. The success of artists is not the reason for /those/ people’s failures. Actually, thriving arts are a sign of a thriving civilization. Tired of the resentfulness. He has a platform, he’s using it. You don’t like it? Keep scrolling.

      • MaggieMay says:

Well Radley, why can’t he respect that regular people have opinions too and chose to vote for Trump? He’s saying the opinions of those people don’t count. What’s the difference? Why can’t he question that without wishing them dead? My dad voted for Trump and I would NEVER wish him dead or cut off our relationship because of it.

      • Hehehe says:

A platform of telling older Americans to die if they voted for Trump. That is out of line. And it’s ageism to pick on older people. How anyone votes should be equally respected no matter their age, ethnicity, religion…

      • Nic919 says:

So ageism is bad but voting for a proven racist, misogynist, homophobe, proven liar and con man who paid out millions to people he screwed over to avoid trial as a president elect, who has no idea how the country works or what the names of all the countries in the world are , is a sign of a sound mind?

Sorry special snowflakes, if you voted for trump you deserve all the scorn you are getting. Cutting off ACA will actually lead to people dying and no jobs will be provided. Trump just lied all the damn time and you dumb sheep believed it.

Voting for an incompetent person to be president just because you hate Hillary is a sign that you are mentally deranged and your decision does not need to be respected.

He has also proven by his recent decisions that he does not care about choosing competent people to help run the government and he keeps acting illegally in order to personally profit from being president. No pivot to sanity is happening.

Shame on all Trump voters. You are either racist or really stupid. And you won’t get a safe space from the rest of the world who could see how utterly incompetent and dangerous Trump will be for the world. Suffer in your delusion because the rest of the world will have to pay for your asinine decision as well.

    • V4Real says:

@Lyka so because he’s an artist he wouldn’t fight in a Civil War?

Stranger things have happen; like Trump becoming President. People said he didn’t know the first thing about running a country but in a few short months he will be running it.

  5. CornyBlue says:

“But if you’re voting for Trump, it’s time for the urn”
Oh my god yes!! I love him so much holy shit. In the face of all those celebs gently going around saying love everyone and everything will be alright.
Also *time for the urn* is now my go to whenever someone messes up it is so perfect i updated all my social media with it .

  6. Leah says:

Lets make Michael Shannon the new posterboy of Celebitchy!!!

  7. Jenns says:

Well, if they gut Medicare, they might be heading for the urn.

And I’m just going to say it–the olds are the friggin worst. They selfishly vote for themselves. They want to go back to a time when white people could say whatever they wanted without consequences. They are nostalgic for a world that only they benefited from.

    • Nic919 says:

The olds are the bigots who never got over the Civil Rights Movement and still use the N word without much restraint. They are the ones who taught their kids that hate. So yeah. Off to the urn.

Not all people that age are bigots, but many are. And when they are allowed to spew their hate because they are old, it makes it worse. They need to be shot down at all times.

    • Shark Bait says:

I feel so bad about getting mad about the olds sometimes because one day I will (hopefully) be old, too. But man it is sometimes hard. My grandma told me that usually if an old person is a really grumpy old jerk (or racist, homophobic, sexist) they were most likely always like that- getting old doesn’t just cause you to become an asshole.
Let’s also remember that lots of people 65 and over were marching for civil rights, women’s rights and protesting the Vietnam war. Not all olds!

    • OldLadiesForHillary says:

Coming in late on this thread but, really … while there IS unquestionably a significant % of the old ones who are very conservative/greedy and deserve whatever you can throw at them. I’m not one of them; I voted for Hillary and was probably one of 3 or 4 people in my SC county who did so. It is not fun to live amongst the groups who either voted for Trump OR — which in my opinion is equally damning — didn’t vote at all or voted 3rd party. In essence, that enabled a Trump win and this was simply not a time to ‘vote with your conscience’ if that meant not voting for Trump’s opponent. I am also very straightforward about my beliefs, values, positions on the issues so don’t have a great many friends in my neighborhood, needless to say. So, I just ask you to settle down a little and remember that surfaces do not always reflect their interiors…

  8. AintNoTelling says:

My parents are 75 and voted for Trump. Meanwhile, their grandchildren are 7 and 12 years old. That being said, plenty of the adults in my family within the ages of 20 to 50, also voted for this idiot.

I have never gotten along with most of my family. They were pretty screwed up long before Trump showed up.

  9. Darkladi says:

I am doubling down on my love for this man & am throwing in a marriage proposal.

  10. Div says:

I think I’m in love with Michael Shannon.

  11. Malibu Stacy says:

I love this man! No lies detected here. Shannon for prez 2020!!

  12. Babyswans says:

In general I tend to think that people in their 30s-50s are the ones with the most knowledge and level headedness about them. College kids & new graduates tend to think they know everything, and from my experience once people hit their 60s it’s all about their needs and a return to “the good ole’ days”. I have met few people past the age of 60 who aren’t the smartest person in a room at all times. But at the same time my opinion is just as generalized and stereotypical as his. At least I’m self aware of it:)

    • Who ARE These People? says:

Hey, I just turned 60 and I *am* the smartest person in the room. At all times. ; )

      • Rachel says:

I know you’re just kidding, but my 65-year-old father does legitimately believe this about himself… and he voted third-party. 🙁

    • Nic919 says:

Someone mentioned above that old bigots were young bigots and I would say that is correct. My parents are in their late sixties and are not racist assholes and did not raise their kids to be that way.

  13. freewhitebaby2.0 says:

Seriously, who is this a-hole and where does he get off saying that people who disagree with him should die?

    • pf says:

He’s not saying they should die. He saying they already lived their lives, they’re close to death anyway yet selfishly voted for someone who will most likely ruin their children and grandchildren’s lives.

      • Casi says:

See, when you say, “It’s time for the urn,” people weirdly think you have a death wish for them.

Or are applying Peter Thiel literally/seriously rules here because he’s hot?

      • Nic919 says:

So voting for a party that will reduce ACA and will lead to people dying is okay?
Maybe that is what he is angry about?

    • SilverUnicorn says:

      Butthurt winner?

And it’s not what he said.

    • Cranberry says:

At least he’s NOT actually running for president. While a man who called for people to be beaten for protesting, thrown in jail, and joked for Hillary to be assassinated WHEN formally campaigning for public office is rewarded for such dangerous ideas. Do you even see the difference? That’s only one of the many problems with Mr. T and his campaign. People who voted for him, like it or not, gave their consent to extreme, unbridled reactionary expression in the ‘public’ political discourse. And now they want to complain that dissenters are doing what they have already modeled and condoned. It doesn’t work like that. Ask any parent.

  14. grabbyhands says:

Daaaaaaannngggg, he is snatching wigs left and right.

And I’m okay with that. There are grim days ahead. People need to be able to express their anger and frustration, just like other voters are doing all over the Constitution.

And then we need to get to work. Real work. Use the rage and fuel it towards making sure you are involved and participating at every level of government. That is the only way the game changes.

  15. Madpoe says:

“But if you’re voting for Trump, it’s time for the urn”
I have a dark sense of humor and found his statements hilarious. I like him!!
Those Trumpkins gave that man access codes to our nukes!

  16. BonnieJean says:

IMHO, this guy brings nothing worthwhile to the table.

    • Radley says:

Except intelligence, talent and the integrity to say what he means and mean what he says. And success. Success which pays taxes. Taxes that support programs a lot of idiot Trump voters rely on.

      Nothing worthwhile indeed.

    • SilverUnicorn says:

Except his opinion without brakes. I like it!!

    • AintNoTelling says:

Actually, he brings PLENTY to the table. He’s right! People that are 75 to 90 showed up in droves to vote for a man who now has Paul Ryan looking at way to gut Medicare. A program the elderly rely on. They ruin life for people who have just started raising a family.

It is not fair that a freakin’ 90 year old who will be dead in a few years just screwed me and my children over because they think Hillary Clinton is a pizza eating pedophile.

People that voted for Trump are insane. As someone posted here yesterday: There was NO legitimate reason to vote for Trump!

  17. QQ says:

The Noise I just made I don’t know how to describe… a mix between sputtering this coffee and the sound that accompanies the *dead* emoji.. My new boo came out swinging and I for one love him for it!

  18. LinaLamont says:

I agree with everything he said except about NAFTA…Reagan killed the economy, Clinton resuscitated it, Bush killed it again.
    Shannon is spot-on.

  19. Brittney B. says:

He’s not holding back at ALL, is he?

Pretty refreshing amid a sea of “wait and see”s and “give him a chance”s. He already showed us exactly who he is, and Michael gets it.

  20. SM says:

He is gloriosly delicious and i agree with most of what he said but the urn. Please. This kind of rational economic argument is what got the word into this mess. It goes like this: you are old so move along grandpa, do not vote because you will die anyway and won’ t have to carry the burden of that decision. Not going to work as long as voting is universal. It would be much better if the politicians tried to understand different people and their perspectives. So that’s an insult and usually provokes an irrational and emotional response of doing more harm than good. The other thing is that after brexit young people really did took this argument to the next level and calculated how much the brexit will cost to young people because eldery will be dead by then. And this is the other point. Not everyone make their political decision based on profit and loss of money. The rationalisation is also behind the misscalculation of the results by democrats in this election. They thought that is is simply irrational to vote for Trump. Boom

    • Nic919 says:

Funny part is that I have spoken to many adults in their 60s, so they are boomers and many of them have said the only way for racism to lessen is when the older bigot generation dies off. Boomers grew up during the civil rights movement. Some of them weren’t racist or learned to open their mind while others just stopped being racist in front of non whites and continued as before and got resentful that being racist isn’t acceptable any more. Those people will never change now according to them.

    • PunkyMomma says:

Daddy and I are boomers (late on the scale). We both voted for HRC, with an eye towards the negative impact a conservative SCOTUS would have on the rights of future generations. Not looking at the urn, yet, and still earning our keep.

      • V4Real says:

But he is only talking to the ones who voted for Trump. He doesn’t mean the elderly democratic voters because perhaps they are smart enough to know the damage the Orange One could do to our country and the effect it will have on our younger generation.

@Nic919 who said “Funny part is that I have spoken to many adults in their 60s, so they are boomers and many of them have said the only way for racism to lessen is when the older bigot generation dies off.”

        I agree, sorry, not sorry.

    • Fl girl says:

Well, I’m 66 and I now realize I will most likely not see a woman President in my lifetime, will not see the end of bigotry in my lifetime, will not see equal rights for all of us in my lifetime. So, maybe I am ready for the urn.

  21. Bonnie B says:

All of the Michael Shannon quotes! He is truly my favorite and so true that the senior citizens of our country who voted for this nut are not going to be the ones who suffer the long term consequences!

  22. robyn says:

He is the one who is truly telling it like it is. Good for him. I wish he were in politics. He sees through the muck and Trump voter BS.

  23. NotSoSocialButterfly says:

And The Iceman just keeps emptying his barrel!!!

  24. L says:

Liked him before..now officially a super fan. 🙂

  25. MellyMel says:

I detect no lies in what this man is saying. He’s saying everything I’ve been feeling. It may be harsh to say, but I really feel this country is going to be “great” or on the right track to be great when a certain generation is no longer here. It is what it is…

    • robyn says:

That’s could be true, however, I recently saw a documentary of high school students in “middle America”. These kids were indoctrinated by their Trump loving parents. They all loved their “freedom”, guns and the USA and they all shared an irrational hatred for Hillary.

      • MellyMel says:

No, you’re absolutely right. Hatred and bigotry is taught. Kids aren’t born hating people because they’re different. But on average, Generation X and Millennials like myself are more accepting of other races, religions, sexual preferences, etc. than the older generations. The more people in our age groups raising kids to be accepting of others and not being filled with fear, will make this country and world better. It’s just going to take a very long time I feel.

      • V4Real says:

“That’s could be true, however, I recently saw a documentary of high school students in “middle America”. These kids were indoctrinated by their Trump loving parents. They all loved their “freedom”, guns and the USA and they all shared an irrational hatred for Hillary. ”

And those students parents most likely learned it from their racist parents.

      • Shark Bait says:

There are a lot of those teens on Instagram. I want to say um where did you learn all this about Hillary? My friend saw a teenager dressed up like Hillary in a prison jumpsuit trick or treating on Halloween. They also irrationally hated Obama because of their parents. When I was pregnant with my oldest, I was out in Pennsyltuckey (in other words not Philly- York to be exact) at an ice cream parlor. A little kid (7 maybe) stood up on his chair and said “Barrack Obama is a lyin n*gger” His mom started to giggle and then looked around. And I mean, these weren’t redneck looking people, they were preppy, upper class looking. I thought, I will never, ever have a child who says something like that because they thought I was ok with it. My daughter is about that kid’s age now and I still think of it.

    • Mannori says:

with will coincide right with the time in which this new generation will screw it up…it’s a life circle that never ends: old gets older and new stops being new

  26. Abbess Tansy says:

    Preach it, son!

  27. Scout says:

Michael Shannon remains perfect and not a single lie was uttered. I’ve taken a twisted satisfaction in refusing to attend Thanksgiving dinner because we’re doing it this year with my sister’s SIL and her family who are ALL Trump supporters. I mean I was already pissed that our Thanksgiving was going to be ruined by sharing it with them but now I have a meaningful reason to not attend. My dog and I will be happily watching Netflix as we split a nice Smart Ones frozen turkey dinner. No regrets.

  28. Llamas says:

I think old people deserve the same rights as everyone else in this country. They too are protected by the 15th amendment even if people don’t agree with their votes. For me the urn comment = should die and I find that incredibly inappropriate. Those people have kids and grandkids..

I wish this country wasn’t so divided between a R’s and D’s. I was watching old debates for gov’t class last semester and things were not so hateful between candidates and things were not so divided between parties. It was quite fascinating actually. Moderation is key to everything. The way to stop politics from getting more extreme to the point where communism and crazy Theocracy are our options is to seek out moderation. Why do you all think Trump was elected? Because everyone is so ‘F you’ to the other party. Sigh.

I saw a ‘rape Melania’ sign the other day. Both sides are so nasty right now. What a time to be alive…….. 🙁

    • robyn says:

Look deeper at why that Melania sign was there. It was the Trump campaign trying to discredit the protesters that were responsible. Lots of tricks being played by the Republicans and their supporters lapped it up.

  29. Isa says:

I work in a SNF and it’s interesting to me to see them cast their vote when they don’t know what day it is and can’t even stay awake to watch the debates.

  30. Sandy says:

I’ve thought for a while now that votes should be pro-rated based on how old a person is. I’m sixty-two. Why should my vote count as much as my childrens votes, since are going to have to live with the consequences far long that I will? Of course, it’s the Trump older voters who would think they have so much “wisdom” and “experience” to grace the younger generation that it would be an abomination. But really, in a world with global warming, old people need to move out of the way.

  31. Nymeria says:

Roughly a third of young people also voted Trump. That should give you pause. It should, but it won’t. The urn comment is cruel. If a right-leaning person said that exact same thing, you all would be screaming to high heaven about how cold-hearted the right is. This guy is literally saying that people of a certain age who don’t agree with him should die. That’s Stalinist and purely evil.

Why do I bother coming here anymore? It’s like reading posts by poorly educated Trotsky supporters.

  32. A. Key says:

    Haha, brutal but effective.

What’s that old Roman saying, sexagenarios de ponte?

  33. Pawra says:

In other words… if you voted for someone I don’t like, it’s time for you to die.

    Wow.

    Absolutely revolting.

    • SilverUnicorn says:

If you voted for a fascist, it’s time to be packed up in an urn.

It’s not disgusting or wrong. Because if one is old enough to remember WWII, sorry but his/her vote for Trump is simply disgusting and damaging.

      • Pawra says:

No. It’s your attitude that’s truly disgusting. I don’t care who you are and how bloody RIGHT you think you are, that does not entitle you to think ppl should DIE bc they didn’t vote the way you wanted them to. This is the problem… people like you threatening and completely dismissing other human beings bc they don’t feel the same way politically as you do. There is NO excuse for that.

    • Hayden says:

Yep, it just has to be the right group to hate and wish death upon…then, apparently, it’ all good. Serious, eye roll.

    • Scout says:

He was being hyperbolic. Tragically the ones who aren’t being hyperbolic are Trump and his ilk. If you don’t look like them, think like them, talk like them or behave like them you should have your constitutional rights revoked? The only death happening is that of human decency.

      • Hayden says:

I agree about the death of human decency. But please don’t act like only the Republicans are the repulsive ones. You might also want to include the 7 million voters who voted for Obama in 2008 and the 3 million that voted for him in 2012 but didn’t vote for Hillary this year. Are they all racist, homophobic, sexists too?? The man will not take office for two months yet I have read on here where we are going into nuclear war and all women, Muslims, Jews, and all other non-whites are being rounded up into concentration camps. Seriously??Y I guess all I can say is it could be worse…Donald Trump is actually the most socially moderate Republican in the bunch. You could have gotten Ted Cruz. No need to mobilize on me and wish for my death, I’m not coming back to the site. I’ll find my gossip somewhere else.

    • Cranberry says:

Wow. Guess what? Michael Shannon is not running for president or any public office is he? You know who you should be seriously concerned about “appropriate”, tempered public expression? Our new President. He modeled this behavior all throughout his campaign, and now he’s surrounding himself with divisive Ultra-Right-wing. Shannon’s rants don’t even come close to how ugly things are about to become when the Ultra-Right bulldoze over our civil rights.

  34. boredblond says:

He should check his facts…a larger percentage of over 65 voters voted repub 4 years ago than this time, so their numbers for trump actually FELL..in the under 30 category, the percent who voted repub was 37%..exactly the SAME as 4 years ago. He is clearly uninformed.

  35. Cranberry says:

What to do if your parents voted for Trump: “F— ’em. You’re an orphan now.”

God Damn I Love This Man!

  36. Meg says:

I’ve been lurking for years, never thought my first comment would have been on a Michael Shannon post. I grew up in Louisville, KY and now live in Lexington. He’s 100% right- these two cities are full of progressive, intelligent people, and the rest of the state is blood red, and that will unfortunately never change.

It’s been very hard on me the last several months, knowing 99% of my family supported this monster.

  37. Isa says:

Also, I talked my mom out of voting for trump. Good thing too, since we have a vacation scheduled together next month. Would have made the trip a little awkward if I wasn’t talking to her. 😜

  38. Freyja says:

Think I just fell in love

  39. Bethany says:

I’m from one of those Kentucky cities he mentioned (Lexington) and the people here are friendly, progressive (we have a gay mayor) and forward-thinking. But go into southern Kentucky or eastern Kentucky and it feels like you could be reliving Deliverance.

  40. Shark Bait says:

Both of my parents are Trump voters in their 60s. I stilled laughed. This is a savage comment I would think but never say out loud. I always feel guilty thinking ill of old people since I will hopefully be an old person myself one day (kind of like how I don’t get how people say they hate children when we were all children at one point) , but I get it. They ate up Trump’s BS but may not be around to feel any negative impact from his policies.

  41. Jade says:

If Orangemort and fans can say what they want in the name of not being politically correct, why shouldn’t he give his opinion?

Michelle and Hillary had too much faith in human decency and processing logic. When they went high, the voters didn’t give a damn. That’s why Hillary looks not so good. When you care too much, it hurts. It hurts.

    • Otaku Fairy says:

Isn’t it funny how some of the first people to complain about there being too much ‘political correctness’ (usually code for not getting to treat someone as less than because of race, gender, ethnicity, or sexuality without their being some kind of consequence/criticism) and thin-skinned oversensitive ‘SJWs/libruls’ are often the first to whine about name-calling and negative opinions that come their way?

  42. Kath says:

    Brutal but hilarious.

But then again, young people deserve the biggest slap of all for not voting in the first place. Brexit and Trump would NOT HAVE HAPPENED if young people voted at the same rates as older people. If you’re protesting now, but didn’t bother to vote in the first place, then you’re an effing idiot. Old people vote for what they perceive to be their interests, even if it is complete bullshit. Young people don’t vote because they are narcissistic, lazy or think they are oh-so-cynical and too cool to participate in a ‘corrupt’ system.

    Both groups deserve our contempt.

On another note, I find it fascinating how some (most?) people become more right-wing as they older, while others can and do change the other way.

My father was a conservative voter his entire life, but voted Labor for the first time in his life in his 80s when the (Australian) Liberal party became too right-wing. He was also in favour of gay marriage, despite (like most of his generation) being quite homophobic as a younger man.

I guess the difference is in older people still being interested in the world and willing to learn new things, not just clinging to old ‘certainties’ and living in the past. It IS incredibly selfish to condemn younger generations (e.g. climate change), when you’re not going to be around to see the consequences.

  43. Otaku Fairy says:

Not the words I would have used, but his bluntness and the fact that he seems to be one of the celebrities who gets the seriousness of this situation are refreshing.

And with all the insulting, threatening things Trump has said to people, (including calling for Hillary to be assassinated, bragging about sexually assaulting women, etc.) nobody who voted for or supports this man has ANY business being butthurt about the urn comment or lecturing other people on name-calling.

  44. Vee says:

I am on the low side of senior and I certainly didn’t vote for the orange idiot.I also have heard the paranoia from Trump voters regarding this conspiracy. A few of my friends said that if Trump loses he will demand recount after recount. However I do not agree with some of the comments about protesting. One of the benefits of being older is you have experiences to learn from. The antiwar Vietnam protests started slowly but changed everything. Ask the descendants of LBJ.

  45. cat says:

I ”enjoy” reading about politics on a celebrity site just as much as I ”enjoy” listening to Brandi Glanville talk about politics. Six election related stories on the front page. I get it – all Trump voters are rednecks (eye roll) and all Hillary voters are intellectuals (even bigger eye roll).

    • drumpfed says:

Damn straight. Hillary voters cared about minorities and the effect that a Trump presidency would have on minorities, women, POC, lgbtq, etc.

Trump voters didn’t. Doesn’t matter what class, what race. They put themselves and their egos first and stupidly so. They had no respect for our government. They had no respect for the job of President. None. Hillary voters cared about putting someone smart and qualified into office. Hillary voters respect this country and it’s traditions. Trump voters did not.

Sorry that fact isn’t pleasant to you. It’s the truth.

  46. esblondie2 says:

I totally LOLed at the quote in the headline. #sorrynotsorry
Hell yeah, Michael Shannon! Welcome to my crush list.
