For months now, there’s been a lot of conversation about and around Steve Bannon. The conversation began in September, when Donald Trump’s campaign had a major staff shake-up and Kellyanne Conway and Bannon were hired. Bannon was seen as a right-wing-fringe lunatic who cozies up to white supremacists, violent crazy people and the worst kind of conspiracy theorists. The conversation took an even more frightening turn when Trump won the election and announced that Bannon was being appointed as his senior adviser. There’s now a movement to “Dump Bannon” mostly because of his allegiance to hard-right white nationalism. Of course, there’s also a conversation that perhaps Bannon is being used as A) the red meat for Trump’s white supremacist base; B) the easy-to-follow controversy for liberals looking for a boogeyman; C) a distraction from the larger conversation of why Donald Trump is appalling, destructive and fascistic. It’s certainly an interesting moment for Bannon to agree to an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, right? Right. You can read Bannon’s interview here. Some highlights:
Bannon doesn’t mind being a dark, shadowy figure: “Darkness is good. Dick Cheney. Darth Vader. Satan. That’s power. It only helps us when they” — I believe by “they” he means liberals and the media, already promoting calls for his ouster — “get it wrong. When they’re blind to who we are and what we’re doing.”
Bill Clinton’s strength with the white working class: “The Clinton strength was to play to people without a college education. High school people. That’s how you win elections.” And, likewise, the Republican party would come to betray its working-man constituency forged under Reagan. In sum, the working man was betrayed by the establishment, or what he dismisses as the “donor class.” To say that he sees this donor class — which in his telling is also “ascendant America,” e.g. the elites, as well as “the metrosexual bubble” that encompasses cosmopolitan sensibilities to be found as far and wide as Shanghai, London’s Chelsea, Hollywood and the Upper West Side — as a world apart, is an understatement.
Bannon doesn’t believe Trump’s victory was about race or racism: “I’m not a white nationalist, I’m a nationalist. I’m an economic nationalist. The globalists gutted the American working class and created a middle class in Asia. The issue now is about Americans looking to not get f—ed over. If we deliver” — by “we” he means the Trump White House — “we’ll get 60 percent of the white vote, and 40 percent of the black and Hispanic vote and we’ll govern for 50 years. That’s what the Democrats missed. They were talking to these people with companies with a $9 billion market cap employing nine people. It’s not reality. They lost sight of what the world is about.”
The new political movement is Trumpism: “Like [Andrew] Jackson’s populism, we’re going to build an entirely new political movement. It’s everything related to jobs. The conservatives are going to go crazy. I’m the guy pushing a trillion-dollar infrastructure plan. With negative interest rates throughout the world, it’s the greatest opportunity to rebuild everything. Ship yards, iron works, get them all jacked up. We’re just going to throw it up against the wall and see if it sticks. It will be as exciting as the 1930s, greater than the Reagan revolution — conservatives, plus populists, in an economic nationalist movement.”
He hates the mainstream (“liberal”) media: “The media bubble is the ultimate symbol of what’s wrong with this country. It’s just a circle of people talking to themselves who have no f—ing idea what’s going on. If The New York Times didn’t exist, CNN and MSNBC would be a test pattern. The Huffington Post and everything else is predicated on The New York Times. It’s a closed circle of information from which Hillary Clinton got all her information — and her confidence. That was our opening.”He also hates conservative media, like Rupert Murdoch & Fox News: “They got it more wrong than anybody. Rupert is a globalist and never understood Trump. To him, Trump is a radical. Now they’ll go centrist and build the network around Megyn Kelly.”
On Trump’s oratory skills: “He gets it; he gets it intuitively. You have probably the greatest orator since William Jennings Bryan, coupled with an economic populist message and two political parties that are so owned by the donors that they don’t speak to their audience. But he speaks in a non-political vernacular, he communicates with these people in a very visceral way. Nobody in the Democratic party listened to his speeches, so they had no idea he was delivering such a compelling and powerful economic message.”
How he sees himself: “I am Thomas Cromwell in the court of the Tudors.”
Thomas Cromwell in the Tudor court? Does that make Donald Trump the Henry VIII figure? Is Bannon going to spearhead an American Reformation? Ugh. As for this: “Darkness is good. Dick Cheney. Darth Vader. Satan. That’s power.” Remember when we were so worried about Karl Rove? Like, the most frightening thing was when Rove was talking about how reality could be manipulated to fit a Republican agenda. And now we have this. The embrace of darkness. The Dark Side, literally. A presidential senior advisor wishing he could be as powerful as Satan.

Yeah, that Satan was quite the guy. Quite the hero to have. No surprise that a bigot would look up to him.
I wonder what will all the Christians and Catholics that voted Trump say when they see they put in place a guy that wants to take advice from a man that thinks Satan and darkness are good. I hope these comments get blasted everywhere so they know what they have let into power. Maybe that was the point since they are always talking about the end times, well they just got it started.
Let’s hope Bannon suffers the same fate as Cromwell. Figuratively, anyway.
Someone should have told him that light can pierce darkness, even in the universe….
Except black holes, and God do I think we should have one at hand to throw all Trump administration in one… added advantage, they surely wouldn’t come out of it.
Someone should have also told him that Sauron, Satan and Darth Vader all have ‘ugly’ endings…..
Economic nationalism + scapegoats = fascism.
Here’s a poem by Michael Rosen:
I sometimes fear that
people think that fascism arrives in fancy dress
worn by grotesques and monsters
as played out in endless re-runs of the Nazis.
Fascism arrives as your friend.
It will restore your honour,
make you feel proud,
protect your house,
give you a job,
clean up the neighbourhood,
remind you of how great you once were,
clear out the venal and the corrupt,
remove anything you feel is unlike you…
It doesn’t walk in saying,
“Our programme means militias, mass imprisonments, transportations, war and persecution.”
So true Sixer.
Love that Sixer – I live very close to the U.S. – can see Washington state across the Strait of Juan de Fuca. We get loads of American tour ships here and many of them are STILL wearing Trump baseball hats and buttons. I feel like yelling at them to get the f*ck out of Canada before they poison it but that wouldn’t be very polite. We Canadians are very polite….
That is so powerful. Thank you so much for sharing!
Oh Sixer-I saw your link to that Graham Holland tweet and I can absolutely see it panning out that way. Hell, it’s already starting…
I hate to be Cassandra, Kitten, but I figure forewarned is forearmed?
I found his reference to a revolution more exciting than the 1930s to be quite ominous. Based on that and his reference to being a “nationalist” it’s pretty clear that the plan is to destroy the economy while protecting the uber rich and scapegoating anyone who isn’t a “good Christian” and white. The Catholics who voted for Trump and support Pence’s ideal of Christian Dominionism are going to get quite the shock if Bannon succeeds in his plans since the KKK & politically oriented Christian fundamentalists aren’t fans of “papists”
Thank you for sharing that. The situation is reminding me of Germany in 1938 and the propaganda machine of Joseph Goebels. I’m Jewish and I’m scared.
There’s an essay simply titled ‘Him’ at Slate online. It will make your blood run cold, all the history details forgotten.
Tragically, even if you made all those who voted for these people read it, so many would still think it absolutely a good thing. We’ve forgotten the tragedies of WW2 so quickly, just in only 2-3 generations it seems.
I guess it depends on how you look at the stories. I am a half -assed athiest who went to Catholic school from third grade until I graduated high-school, so please forgive my poor memory of the bible stories.
Satan is only powerful because God still allows him to exist. That is not power at all. He would be powerful if he had actually won and got to start over somewhere new or built something new. God put him in hell to punish him for what he did. God is still waiting for Satan to repent for his war in heaven. God existed before Satan and will exist long afterward. You cannot say the same for Satan. If God wanted Satan dead and gone, he would be dead and gone. This is according to my understanding of the story.
Darth Vader also ends up doing one redeemable thing by saving Luke and ultimately humanity in the Return of the Jedi.
Steve Bannon is neither Darth Vader nor Satan. He is an ignorant fool who was brought up by other ignorant fools to believe that white people are the superior race. He is an enabler with no morals to speak of and just downright disgusting.
With the quality of humans lately, Satan probably lost his position in hell.
He sounds utterly vile. “We’re just going to throw it up against the wall and see if it sticks”? WTF sort of way is that to run a country.
Rasputin. They share the Crazy Eyes. That look is always behind his eyes, even when he is puffed up, thinking he’s spouting something intelligent. He truly doesn’t give a fook about the middle class and underemployed in this country. He doesn’t really care about the rich elites either-jokes on them. He doesn’t care about families or children. Ultimately I think he just wants to watch the world burn and this administration puts him closer to the button. He’ll get his last jollies manipulating people behind the scenes to make it so.
And there isn’t a d@mn Republican who is a decent enough human being to stand up to them. They will all rollover.
” I am Thomas Cromwell in the court of the Tudors.” I think that’s an excellent reference and if all goes well, he’ll be executed for treason, just like good ‘ol Cromwell.
Holy shit that is one of the scariest things I’ve read, in an election full of disturbing topics and statements.
Welcome to Nazi Germany, circa 1937-38.
He never actually spoke a sentence. He rambled and dodged and changed topics. If that’s “getting it”, I’m fine with not getting it.
This is not a curse, nor a wish (ONLY because I want to protect myself from any Karmic backlash), simply an intuitive observation.
Steve Bannon will not be on this earth for very long.
Whether or not his influence continues beyond that …well, that depends on how much of the dark side he’s embraced.
I realize this is not a thing that can have citation, but citation? Or supporting evidence?
The greatest orator?! Hahahahaha! He cannot speak a coherent sentence! And what a vocabulary he has. Everything is great and terrific except when it’s fat and a loser.
This is up there in the delusional column with the Reverend who declared Rump the “Winston Churchill of today.” I’ll never get over that one. I just wonder if anyone ever told that moron who Sir Winston Churchill was.
Yes, how could anyone say “greatest orator” about Trump with a straight face is beyond me. He repeats himself constantly and his words make no sense, especially when read.
Bannon’s comment is a part of a con job.
Trump is seriously one of the worst public speakers I have ever heard. He is worse than George Dubya “fool me once shame on you, fool me twice…. um you’re not going to fool me again” Bush!
Trump talks in circles and uses way too many adjectives. Tremendous, beautiful, top notch, amazing, bigly. I watched one of his live rallies on CNN and had no idea what he was ever talking about. It went from the wall, to factories in Mexico, to him picking out marble for his hotels, to teenagers in New England dying of heroin overdoses, back to the wall, then to Mitt Romney being weak and a loser. All in like ten minutes or so.
Wonder what all of the Trumpers who call themselves Christians will think when they see that Bannon is lumping himself into the same category as Satan.
They won’t see it. It isn’t getting covered on the news sources they follow.
Yep agree lightpurple. On the other side, we have Breibart plastered all over the place now, I saw a link to it on BBC news this morning. Surely Satan’s followers are ready to radicalise everyone and everywhere.
Simply terrifying.
Exactly. They dismiss anything said by the “liberal” media and get their news from Fox, Breitbart, Drudge, Newsmax and Infowars, which confirm the biases they have.
Did you see the article about the group that put out a lot of the fake news? The only news that garnered sufficient clicks was pro-Trump. The far right is much more prone to believe the fake news.
https://www.buzzfeed.com/craigsilverman/how-macedonia-became-a-global-hub-for-pro-trump-misinfo?utm_term=.gijgMMzzb#.veXrPPMM7
My husband’s high school friend rants all over facebook about the mainstream liberal media, but he posts stuff from Info wars, Breitbart, Mad world news, Young cons, Allen West Republic, Steven Crowder, etc. He was all about the “Clinton Body Count” and the “Clinton Cash” “documentary”. You couldn’t counter him with any legitimate source or he’d scream liberal media. One of his fb cronies tagged him in a post in September when Bannon joined the Trump team stating their victory at getting someone from Breitbart to that level.
This guy is also a drunk and a hot mess, and could honestly be Billy Bob Thornton’s character in Bad Santa. So that is who we’re dealing with here.
They won’t care.
He is tweaking liberals and progressives with that quote.
They are just fine with it.
Even if Trump’s followers see Bannon’s comments, they won’t care. So many of them are blind worshipers.
“It’s just a circle of people talking to themselves who have no f—ing idea what’s going on.”
If ever there was a more ironic statement…
So F-CKING ironic.
I’ve never seen Bannon’s picture before and now I wish I hadn’t. Drumpf activates my gag reflex but that florid faced mother-f-cker right there makes my eye twitch.
“Greatest orator since William Jennings Bryan”…..
So in addition to everything else, this guy is also stupid?
Someone needs to tell Bannon that at the end of the book that Satan’s in, he looses.
Yep. if you believe what The Book says, Satan gets his “15 minutes” to wreak havoc and then gets shut down for the rest of eternity. Same with Bannon, Trump, Putin, Assad et al. Any successes they have are temporary and there is a reckoning in the end that is inescapable.
Yeah, but the 15 minutes is 1,000 years in the Book.
Satan and Power? that’s about right. that’s what the idiots voted for:Greed. But power coming from a woman or from a black dude is evil. Power from white dudes is “and we’re back to business and it feels good”.
So does Darth Vader. And Cheney is a loser
Nope to all of this.
Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope.
*Insert Nope Octopus gif.*
Nope.
ugh, right? same thoughts, except the gif running through my head is the “fuck this” cat.
“exciting as the 1930s” they’re very open about the historical transformation they want to mimic. what their revolutionary economic plan doesn’t get is the facts on the ground of the global labor force and infrastructures like transfer pricing, spatial fix, etc. they still need the resources from the rest of the world, and the businesses are not going to want to pay American wages—there’s going to be a season of shady international deals (as there already is but more cloak and dagger) and a few crumbs of jobs to the American public for p.r. Post election, Ruchir Sharma wrote a good piece comparing the globalization of the 1910 to the nationalist purge of the 1930s with the pros and cons of both a de-globalized economy/borders/etc. and globalization. Bannon’s plan is textbook and going to land us in super inflation. And I think, then they are going to have to declare a war with Russia/China (a super power, not terror cells) to get the economy out of the mess they are now creating. Basically Great Depression/SuperNationalism/Facism/WWII/Stimulated War Economy. Because why not go back in time to one of humanity’s nightmares?
Check it out: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/13/opinion/sunday/when-borders-close.html
The question that remains is: will Russia and China lose?
That’s the scary thing, China won’t lose, neither will Russia, it’s the US that loses as economically they are dependent on China for all of their goods.. I mean it’s a disaster and it’s the Americans that will go down.. Ugh..When will this waking nightmare end??
Be wary, people. He is pushing your buttons with this Satan thing. Trump’s talent and his is to keep people talking while they push their agenda behind the scenes.
This. He absolutely is trolling the media and us. Who would ever seriously say they admire Satan?
A troll.
Exactly – what I can’t understand is why the media is falling for it ? Is it just because they want ratings? It’s pretty damn obvious Trump needs the attention so why not ignore him already – cover actual stories not the BS silliness that will only serve to keep his name in the limelight and further cement those that feel the media is biased.
If there is one silver lining to this election it is that the hypocrisy of the Christian conservatism that supported a Trump has been fully exposed. Never again am I going to remain silent when an idiot family member bleats about something Dr. James Dobson told them to do, or that Franklin Graham is such an awesome guy.
My guess is that they’re still not seeing it.
They are not – I posted something about the hypocrisy and their response was that they were taking the pages out of the Democrats book – what?
I’m deeply disturbed, but not surprised, by this. Bannon has played a huge part in Trumps campaign since being taken on as campaign chief executive back in August, which had him in charge of staff, operations, strategic oversight and campaign initiatives. His influence over the campaign is largely held why Trump was able to pull off this win. He hit the campaign HARD but from behind the scenes.
Bannon is a horrible man and a rabid ideologue, but he is not stupid by any stretch. He will very quietly and subtly pull the levers of power to change how the executive branch does things and it will be not easy to see at first. His racism, I suspect, is not quite as deep as his anti-establishment, anti-left hate, so it won’t be as obvious to fellow Republicans that he is terrifying. He won’t get forced out by Preibus, Ryan, and others; they’ll try to be allies. Listen, it starts small— Bannon has Trump’s ear and will start with staff choices. From there small shifts in policy— tiny, seemingly minor executive actions—will erode institutions, change the Department of Education, the Interior, the IRS, the EPA, Health and Human Services, and the Social Security Administration. He will keep the conspiracy machines chugging along, muddying waters, and feeding select information (misinformation?) to media on the left and right. The danger will not be as clear and un-American as people seem to think.
Probably the only one thinking about this, but his ways/speeches remind me of Goebbels.
I agree with you that the primary aim will be a subtle power grab for the executive.
Will someone get this guy a f*cking comb? He looks like a bloated, alcoholic transient.
“I’m the guy pushing a trillion-dollar infrastructure plan.
Always reassuring when you have the CEO of an incoming president’s campaign talk about throwing something against a wall to “see if it sticks”.
Notice there was no talk about policy or how he might actually go about achieving this pipedream of bringing America back to 1937.
I listened to the Fresh Air podcast about Bannon last night and it was terrifying.
Oh my God kitten, at first sight I had read “will someone get this guy a f**king bomb”…. selective reading lol
And I read it while footpath hiking and nearly busted my face open I laughed so hard and tripped. Kitten my protective phone screen took a hit for you. Crack of Bannons Comb.
@LittleDarling
I hope you’re OK! See it’s Bannon dark side of the force at work already.
Where is a Mount Doom when we need it?
Was thinking of you a lot, LD. Glad to see you back.
I find it ironic that the guy who made the brunt of his wealth through Seinfeld residuals is an anti-Semite who’s alleged to have said that he hates Jewish people and that he won’t let his kids go to school with Jews.
shit!!! so did I
The only amazing thing that happened to me since the election was that my MOMMY was in town for two weeks and literally held my hand during the results, although I was crying very early on. However it was so fantastic having her here, we mourned and dissected and soaked up CNN and watched TONS of documentaries/films (Trumpland on Showtime in addition to The Circus which I cannot recommend enough guys! It’s a docu on the whole election prior to the caucus and it really helped me get my liberal brain out of my ass and see the others during the grassroots campaigning.) it was literal heaven.
I wanted to just stop and not take in anymore of this mayhem and just pretend I could live in puppies and babies but then I realized that was my privilege talking. Missed you guys so much, loving pantsuit nation and #2016activistborn is my new hashtag/POV. TONS of things in LA to participate in.
I am waiting for the disgust to peak and then we can all know what we are working with. The main way I see him personally affecting me is the new way of taxing single parents and taking HOH away.
Dick.
They can bring back all the factories they want but it will not reinvigorate the working class. Plenty of factories have been coming back to US soil in the last decade — including foreign brands like Hyundai — and the job growth has been minimal.
Why? Robots. Most labor jobs can now be done by robots. In about 15 years we’re finally going to see the crisis for what it is: millions of people with no marketable skills.
@INeedaNap
Spot-on. People are whining about the same stuff everywhere but there will be whole categories of workers that simply become ‘unskilled’ as a result of automation.
Years ago I had people laughing at me because they thought I was constantly wasting time because I spent money and energy in courses to keep myself updated…. they’re not laughing so much now…
+!
ITA – this is the same crap that we are getting from the Labour party in the UK. They are shouting about bringing back manufacturing to the UK which will create jobs but again, robots do most of it. Instead they should be talking about ways to increase the skills of those working classes and manufacturing communities to bring them into the 21st century, instead of keeping them in the 19th century.
Not only is automation a huge factor, but corporations won’t bring jobs back to the States and pay their employees $$$. Are Americans really going to want jobs where they make minimum wage? Most of these corporations are paying people in developing nations very little money. Why do people think they are going to come back to the States and start paying people $20 an hour when they were previously paying someone else just a few dollars a day?…
Yup. But people will plug their ears because… emails, Benghazi, body count, Trump will save the working class, lalalala.
This guy is worst (with Spencer) than the others (even Pence)
he is clearly NOT healthy.he looks ill of alcohol and other toxics.
Me too, Kitten. I suggest most readers on this site who are anti trump to give it a listen as well. We have to know what we are up against.
Why would anyone want to go back to The Great Depression? Anyone other than Hitler’s clone, that is?
My great aunt remembers the 1930s. Not a great time to hear her tell it.
Please listen to yesterday’s On the Media. It covered Bannon and interviewed a newly emboldened White Supremacist talking about separation of the races and areas set aside for whites only.
I renew my suggestion for all of us to increase support to NPR because it’s going to be on the neo-Nazis (s)hitlist.
YES! They are on my donation list this year.
Thank you, SusanneToo. I just now subscribed to this podcast and will listen to this episode tonight at the gym.
Ha, I was coming to comment JUST to make a comment about how this man looks (shallow, I know). Someone else said last night that Bannon looks like he sleeps on a park bench, and I agree wholeheartedly. He looks like a mega-alcoholic with his bloated face, red nose, and broken capillaries.
And SURPRISE! The $1T infrastructure spending plan is a fraud.
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/21/opinion/build-he-wont.html?_r=0
“To understand what’s going on, it may be helpful to start with what we should be doing. The federal government can indeed borrow very cheaply; meanwhile, we really need to spend money on everything from sewage treatment to transit. The indicated course of action, then, is simple: borrow at those low, low rates, and use the funds raised to fix what needs fixing.”
“But that’s not what the Trump team is proposing. Instead, it’s calling for huge tax credits: billions of dollars in checks written to private companies that invest in approved projects, which they would end up owning. For example, imagine a private consortium building a toll road for $1 billion. Under the Trump plan, the consortium might borrow $800 million while putting up $200 million in equity — but it would get a tax credit of 82 percent of that sum, so that its actual outlays would only be $36 million. And any future revenue from tolls would go to the people who put up that $36 million.”
“how is this scheme supposed to deal with infrastructure needs that can’t be turned into profit centers? Our top priorities should include things like repairing levees and cleaning up hazardous waste; where’s the revenue stream? Maybe the government can promise to pay fees in perpetuity, in effect “renting” the repaired levee or waterworks — but that makes it even clearer that we’re basically engaged in a gratuitous handout to select investors.”
Thanks for posting, that’s depressingly convincing.
This guy is Lucifer. Trumpism and his racist administration is going to make United State of America A LIVING HELL and there’s no way to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN. USA IS PLACE FOR DEVIL’S SPAWN.
I have been reading a lot about Bannon and Richard Spencer. If you don’t know who Richard Spencer is, get familiar. The thing about these men is that they aren’t idiots. In most cases they are Ivy League educated (legitimately so), extremely calculating and have a plan. Trump is looking more and more like a puppet each day. They love trump because they have his ear. They have been loyal to trump and with trump, loyalty goes a long, long way. So now they feel that they are coming out of the shadows and are now a part of the mainstream. They actually don’t like Republicans because they think Republicans blend too much- Republicans are too tolerant of other nationalities and cultures and religions. The end goal is to make the United States a sanctuary for white people of European descent. Thank you, thank you, thank you moderate Republicans, miffed working class, and traditional white women for putting these men into the White House. This isn’t scary at all. This will not further divide us at all *sarcasm*– Seriously, we are on the cusp of becoming a fundamentalist society *shivers*– I don’t want the next 4 years to be terrifying and confusing, but it really seems like it is going to be. Bannon wants to destroy multicultural/multiethnic democracy and he has found in trump the perfect puppet.
Trump is an idiot and a puppet. Watch and see that his administration will tell him to bring back that stupid “Jim crow laws” and United States will belong to Russia right after 2017. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WILL BE LIVING IN HELL.
These white nationalists absolutely believe that they effectively hijacked the White House.
Yes. I heard the Fresh Air episode about Bannon, too, and it was terrifying. He singlehandedly manipulated the media to give Trump the election. In retrospect it explains why we kept wondering why, no matter how egregious Trump’s words and actions were, people were still supporting him. More people than we realized, because they were buying what Bannon was selling, the scheming, diabolical bastard.
I think of all the people to fear in this Trump sh%^show, he’s the one I fear most. He simply doesn’t give a crap if he destroys civilization as we know it. In fact he seems to relish the opportunity.
This comes from a guy who looks like he is one drink or cupcake away from meeting his dark hero in person.
I guess Bannon doesn’t know that Henry beheaded Cromwell.
That was my first thought too, S.
😀
I suspect that he’s gotten confused with his descendent Oliver Cromwell; you know, the one who helped start 2 Civil Wars, committed regicide (was behind the execution of Charles I) and was known for his genocidal wars against the Catholics in Scotland and Ireland.
Well, that doesn’t track with the Tudors but, even if true, it’s not as if Oliver turned out great. He killed a king (check your neck Donald) and though Cromwell himself probably died of natural causes (there is significant poison speculation), his own head still ended up on a pike, literally, for something like 40 years so, yeah, not exactly aspirational.
@S – Bannon is more like Oliver than Thomas which is why I said he was confused. Thou the comparisons between Trump and Henry (esp the later Henry who emerged after that infamous head injury cause by a fall off his horse while jousting) are interesting. Both are (were) unpredictable megalomaniac’s who treated women like crap thou Trump hasn’t had any of his wives murdered.
Henry VIII was more interested in wine and women while Thomas Cromwell ran the country – so I guess Bannon thinks that will be him. The power behind the throne.
History nerd-ism aside, because I could Cromwell/Tudor goss all day, Bannon definitely thinks of himself as the power behind the throne, and probably knows that Melania, unlike Anne, doesn’t have enough of Trump’s ear to wrest the power from his weasel-y fingers. Ivanka on the other hand …
And if you don’t think Trump would have had Marla beheaded and Ivana locked in a nunnery had he had the power …
I was thinking the same.
yeah, the whole clown posse of president rump has no clue, literally.
delusions of grandeur, definitely.
what a heaping spectacular mess they are primed to make after falling into the massive pit they dug. and they will claw each other to bloody pulps to lay blame on anybody buy themselves.
not even in office yet and barely holding on.
yes, rump has an understandable vernacular, he speaks like a petulant 13 year old. no big words. nothing beyond elementary school education levels. throw in some hate-bait for shock. very uncomplicated speech for weak ideas (if they can even be described as ideas).
that rump graduated from an ivy league school is proof you can pay for a degree.
*cough*kushner*cough*
There is no such thing as Satan. He may as well have said he worships the cryogenically frozen head of the late Walt Disney. It means nothing. You can’t harness power from things that don’t exist. He is a fat bast*ardo doing and saying things that stupid/bad people do.
You can’t even harness the power of a good entity. You either do good things or you don’t.
Obviously Satan isn’t real, because if he were, we would have heard his name floated for a cabinet position by now.
Satan isn’t real? What other excuse is there for Dick Cheney?
Dick Cheney’s mom and dad lack of proper contraception is the main excuse for his existence.
If you read the quote carefully, he’s actually mocking people who say he’s as bad as Satan. He goes on to say that he likes that people are pushing forth this false image because it means that “liberals are blind” to what he’s doing.
He sounds like an idiot either way, I just wanted to clarify.
Yeah he is Kitten. He thinks he is soooo clever.
I guess I was jarble gargle jibber jabbing at the same people who believe in Satan but not the way he means it. Like there is no dark power just bad dudes doing bad things. Blame the human for their actions and keep a watch on their behavior but the human isn’t getting help from a dork lord of the underground and they aren’t the antichrist. There is no antichrist.
I’m rambling on blah blah hope you guys have a good one!
Yep. Satan isn’t a thing.
Heaven and hell exists here on earth in the form of humanity.
He does remember that Cromwell was executed for treason by Henry VIII, right? Minor details…
This guy does know that Thomas Cromwell was eventually executed right?
He probably wants to re-write history, that’s a common trait to all fascists. I am not joking here because I had to consult, for an academic essay, the works about the Roman Empire written by historians during Mussolini’s rule. Do you know how many I could use for reference? None. They were all purged of substantial stuff because there were historical events that were not supposed to be told.
well, they say history is written by the victors…that’s why people used to say that Richard III was a hunchback who killed his nephews (among many other historical inaccuracies written about histories’ “losers” since…)
@Woodstock. Re: Richard III, while he didn’t have a hunchback when his bones were finally discovered a few years ago it was confirmed that he suffered from scoliosis. Even before his death he was the no. 1 suspect in his nephews deaths and I personally think he ordered it, he was ambitious and ruthless. Althou i wouldn’t completely rule out Margaret Beaufort and her son Henry VII (who’s claim to the throne was extremely dodgy and were even more ruthless than Richard and Edward) as there is no definite timeline on the princes’s deaths.
Shakespeare may have been the Tudor’s main PR hack but there is historical fact mixed in with his wonderful stories.
@Digital Unicorn – yes, I knew about the scoliosis, but Shakespeare made it sound like Richard III was some Quasimodo type figure, when in fact Richard fought bravely in several wars and was considered a good army commander. I see how people would think he killed his nephews, but my personal feeling, just based on what I’ve read, is that Margaret Beaufort ordered them killed so that her son would be more secure on the throne.
Oh dear God. Everyone– pray!!
Another arrogant stunt by Trump with him doing “job interviews” with media and the public forced to watch the hypocrisy of even Mitt Romney shaking hands with someone he called unfit and a con artist. It hurts to see people lapping it up and Trump outmaneuvering everyone while we watch the show. He is being normalized and no one is stopping the insanity.
I know we’re not supposed to appearance shame, but screw it! He’s one of the ugliest piles of flesh I’ve ever seen. Dorian Gray’s portrait come to life-the outside matches the inside.
Nice Gin blossoms.
An incorrect and little discussed nugget in here: “…globalized and created a middle class in Asia”.
He knows this is a half truth. 1. What’s wrong with someone else in the world having a better life? 2. Globalization made everyone better off. Our wealth increases because prices are lower, since the pool of competitors is larger. 3. Globalization isn’t the problem. The inability of the “working class” to adapt to a changing world by picking up extra skills is the problem. Globalization (and immigration) is a scapegoat.
Everything about him screams active alkie to me which means he is a very ill person–in every way.
Thank you for covering this Kaiser. It won’t get much play elsewhere.
Which is why we all need to be careful here. This is a smart, smart man. There is a reason the article appeared in The Hollywood Reporter and not a conservative based outlet. There is a reason this shadow figure emerged now to give an interview.
Bannon knows that not one conservative will lend a bit of credence to this article, it will be dismissed as garbage from the liberal media. The quotes are carefully chosen to tweak and outrage progressives, and most probably, to distract as well. I mean Satan and Cheney — really?
The man knows damn well what happened to Cromwell, too. He is laughing like crazy over the sputtering outrage this causes among liberals, all the while methodically going about planting seeds to destroy any progressive progress if the last 50 years.
Focus on what we can do to stop him – what congressional districts we can challenge, what governorship we can take back, – not on laughing at his hubris or thinking that somehow Trump voters will see the error of their ways in his words.
“He is laughing like crazy over the sputtering outrage this causes among liberals, all the while methodically going about planting seeds to destroy any progressive progress if the last 50 years”
Absolutely agree. That’s what he was getting at with the satan comment.
He’s a very dangerous man and an enemy of social progress.
Yep. I have already had one conversation where i was told, “Bannon can’t really be a racist. Look at the access he gives to the liberal media.”
Don’t laugh at him, dismiss him, or make fun of the holes in his assertions. He has a carefully calibrated message designed to manipulate the conversatuon.
Hmmmm…. Let me get this straight. Steve Bannon’s alt-right is going to save America by invoking FDR’s alt-left New Deal?
I’ve been reading Bannon’s interviews, and he is definitely an economic populist. It’s not crazy to compare his economic views with FDR. His position is that the elites have turned human beings into economic commodities which is immoral and an affront to God, and that we need to recalibrate capitalism so it is guided by a moral compass. He’s not wrong about those things–it’s essentially the message Bernie Sanders was moving only instead of wrapping it in a toxic pastry of Christian Dominionism and White Nationalism, Bernie was aligned with progressive values and inclusion. That’s what makes Bannon so terrifying–his arguments are compelling and are addressing real pain and need across the country but he’s also a power hungry megalomaniac who is the real president of our country right now. He’s also an alcoholic so I can only hope he slips in the tub while drunk or his liver explodes before our country is completely undone.
Yes, he is an economic populist but he is also a power hungry megolamaniac who has energized a violent, racist and overwhelmingly misogynistic minority to get what he wants.
“We will govern for 50 years… ”
Exactly who elected you, sir? You rode inside that vast Trojan Horse Donald Trump, and there are still a majority who are wise enough to see it. We must stay energized. And focused.
Completely agree on the megalomania, violence and racism. I’m Latina and this election has terrified me. I’m now carrying pepper spray which makes me so sad but I don’t feel safe.
Alex Jones, he is trying to implement in Alex Jones conspiracy theory as fact and basing their platform around it.
I think the plan is to cause another Black Tuesday and then revoke FDR’s New Deal and Johnson’s Great Society.
I like to think that I have a pretty solid educational background, but between Trump, Conway and this guy I am absolutely at a lost – it’s like my version of reality where, for example, satan = bad, racism = bad, decency = good suddenly doesn’t apply. I feel like my whole belief system is being gaslighted.
The awful thing is that I have to read about them to keep myself informed. It makes me sick that these people even have platforms but I feel like I have to know what they’re up to so I can make decisions that would protect my family when they officially start their mission to ruin USA and the world.
*sigh*… Rant over. Sorry everyone. I’ll go find a corner and drink my sorrows away.
Definitely important to keep reading, as disgusting as it is.
But please don’t share anything from Breitbart, this guy’s ass-backwards political site. It’s tempting to share on social media because his stuff is so insanely barbaric and misogynistic, but let’s not give this guy’s hateful site any attention.
Seriously?
The GOP NEVER shut up about how “celebrity-obsessed” both Obama and Hillary were, and this idiot’s first interview is with the Hollywood Reporter?
SMH
“It will be as exciting as the 1930s” – so a global depression, genocide and the rise of fascism? Where’s my hole so I can just live there for 10 years and come out of this after…
Actually evil loves it when people believe Satan is not real. He gets more done that way. I see Revelations being played out before our eyes. These conservative Christians just go through the motions. Even if you are an atheist, read Revelations as an intellectual exercise. The parallels between Trump and the Antichrist, as well as Bannon and the False Prophet are terrifying. When I see Trump/Brannon betraying the Jews, I am going to bend over and kiss my ass goodbye. Revelations has much to say on the fall of New Babylon, which some scholars equate with NYC (Wall Street and the American economy) .
Wouldn’t it be ironic and make sense, because they Bible says it, Evangelicals elected the anti-Christ to office? Scripture says they will do it and it looks like they elected some kind of Christ to office. Now one ounce of morality ot humanity.
“As exciting as the 30”?
The depression was exciting?
Lord Sith, Dick Cheney, would eat this guys liver for dinner and then sell his other body parts. Bannon thinks he is the ultimate red piller who can bring back white men as the forefront of everything. Be the voice of these so called thin skinned cry baby victims. Well, men who are really good at being bad, keep their mouth shut and wreck havoc behind the scenes. This fool is telling everybody how “great” is he and what he plans to do. Hope he ends up getting himself booted from Trumps team or gets Donnie impeached.
On a superficial, or maybe not, level, this man looks like a washed-up drunk. And I’ve been to lots of AA meetings with my brother, so yeah….
Totally agree. One of my very close friends is a raging alcoholic, pretty much been told if he doesn’t go to a medical detox he will die soon. He has the same look as Bannon does. There are tell tale sign and they both have pretty much all of them.
Very sad for my friend. He just can’t stop drinking and now the doctors have told him he can’t unless he’s supervised because he’ll have seizures. Awful.
Nationalism is bad. That’s what led to the great wars. 1 and 2. It’s heading there again.
I juat cannot wrap my head around the ridiculous hypocrisy the evangelicals have embraced this election… Someone who embraces the power of Satan and freakin Darth Vader?
Sure, I guess Vader created jobs building the Death Star (twice).
He does have a point about speaking to the donor class.
Put a black cloak on this guy. And yeah, that whole Henry VIII thing ended well!
I think he forgot how things ended for Cromwell. He might want to pick another guy…
Someone didn’t watch Return of the Jedi… or he’d know that Vader regretted turning to the dark side and gave his life to destroy it.
I like that the Nazi name-checked Andrew Jackson, of all people.
Attention Republicans, this is the kind of mess we warned you you were voting for.
Also, has anyone read about requesting an audit of the swing states that “went” for Rump? Something is rotten…
This is kind of off topic but has anyone heard anything about #pizzagate?
He does remember what happened to Cromwell, doesn’t he?

darth vader and satan, yeah, that seems like a sane enough person that can run a democratic country? WTF!!!!!!
He is very ugly.
