I’m sure it’s been said before, but Mark Hamill just seems like such a nice guy. Refreshingly normal, I guess. I think it’s because he found a way to survive in Hollywood beyond playing Luke Skywalker – he was a jobbing, scrambling, lean-times working actor for decades, and it’s given him some capacity for empathy and humanity. That’s what I was thinking about as I read this Daily Beast interview with Hamill, which was conducted a week after Election Day. I imagine we’ll be getting similar interviews in the weeks to come, as actors and actresses are trying to assess the damage in real time, just like everybody else. You can read Hamill’s interview here. Some highlights:
His thoughts on the election: “I’m in total denial. I’m glad I have [the show] to take my mind off what’s going on. Because if you look at what’s being assembled for our government it’s like, yikes. It’s a who’s-who of really despicable people. It’s tempting to say, ‘Well, I’m moving to Canada, I can’t stand it.’ But in other ways, it’s a challenge to stay and defend your country and do what you think is right and not retreat and hide under the covers. It’s not gonna be easy, that’s for sure.”
He grew up in a Republican household: The son of a U.S. naval officer whom he describes as a “big Nixon guy,” Hamill, a card-carrying Democrat, sympathizes with those whose Thanksgiving gatherings turned into political dogfights this year—inevitable when “half the people in the country are thrilled and delighted and half the people are disgusted, repulsed, and embarrassed.” (His three now-grown kids, he notes, “turned out alright.” As for himself, “like Stephanie Miller and Ronald Reagan Jr., I fell far from the tree.”)
He stands by the message of the Star Wars films: “It sounds corny, but the Star Wars films were incredibly optimistic films. They talked about doing good just because it helps others and being selfless and understanding your place in the universe. Beyond being entertaining, I hope that’s a message that kids still respond to. Because I still believe that. I still believe all those tenets of ‘treat others the way you want to be treated’ and so forth.”
I’m sort of enjoying all of the people who, faced with our first fascist autocrat president, have decided to stick around and still fight the good fight. That’s how I feel too – of course I was and I am depressed and grief-stricken for our country. But I’m also pissed off and disgusted and I want to do my part to make sure that President Trump goes down in flames and hopefully doesn’t take the country with him.

The man tells no lies here. I love it!
Sadly he is 100% correct. Horrible people, horrible choices. We all suffer.
not only nice, but a great sense of humor and can laugh at himself.
if you’ve seen “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”, you know.
I never thought that my favorite actor from Star Wars would be the actor playing Luke. Never.
But I love him so much. He’s reached Patton Oswalt levels in my love.
A little consolation/pep talk from Luke Skywalker is exactly what I needed.
Totally! <3
Exactly this — even almost a month later I’m still consumed with grief and disgust but Luke just made me believe in a better day.
Yes he is and if he could just put them all together on an island with himself. Then lose his mind over one of the insults they tell and throw a nuke on the person who insulted him without realising that he himself in on that island and would die with that person.
Now how is that for a dream?
That’s the spirit, Kaiser!
“…our first fascist autocrat president…That’s how I feel too – of course I was and I am depressed and grief-stricken for our country. But I’m also pissed off and disgusted and I want to do my part to make sure that President Trump goes down in flames and hopefully doesn’t take the country with him.”
Exactly.
Yeah…Hamill has a reputation for being nice.
I support Hamill 100%. He could not be more right.
Well, he’s right.
Until Trump and his cohorts scurry back into their little rat holes, we need guys like this who are (excuse the expression) really telling it like it is.
Amen, Kaiser. We can’t bury our heads in the sand or flee to Canada, no matter how much sleep we lose in fear and anger over what Trump wants to do to our nation. If we all stay here and fight I believe we can keep the absolute worst from happening (unfortunately, I think he’ll still be able to do some bad stuff) and hopefully get the country back on the right track soon. Mark Hamill commenting on Trump is particularly relevant to me, a Star Wars geek, as the Star Wars movies examine what happens when a democratic government slides into a fascist regime.
Love him he’s such a nice guy – the beard makes him hotter.
Thou isn’t there some drama surrounding his eldest son, who apparently fathered a child with a former pron star who claimed that Mark tried to pressure her into having an abortion saying his son wasn’t ready to be a father. Not sure what is true thou.
He is an inter-galactic treasure <3
didn’t I just read a story about how he was pressuring his sons girlfriend to get an abortion I was kind of shocked about that haven’t heard much about it
Source?
I googled and it’s all over. But it’s her side only so who knows what the full story is.
There is no try
His cabinet picks are so horrifying and get worse each day. It honestly doesn’t even feel real, looking at that list.
Ahhh….Mark. I wish his voiceover work got him as many interviews and promo tours. Because my first crush ever always gives good interview.
well, Trump is despicable. they tend to flock together…. like child molesters.
