I honestly don’t know how I feel about Meghan Markle. When the news first broke about her, I thought it was a weird tabloid fiction, because it just seemed too good to be true. I mean, our ginger prince dating a mixed race American woman? It’s like Christmas! Gossip Christmas! I continued to be excited for them for a while, but at this point… I do have my doubts. At best, it feels like too-much-too-fast. At worst, it feels like they’re both in a lust-haze and neither is thinking long-term. So with engagement rumors percolating and Meghan flying into London unexpectedly on Sunday, the new conversation is… will Meghan and Harry actually spend Christmas together? Will Meghan meet the Queen? Who thought THIS would be the conversation six months ago?
Now that Meghan Markle has helped Prince Harry decorate his palace pad with a 6-foot Christmas tree, will she be joining the royal holiday celebrations with Queen Elizabeth at her Sandringham Estate? If there is a setting for her at the holiday table, it would be a first for the royal family. Princess Kate didn’t visit Sandringham for Christmas until she was married in 2011. (Although she became engaged in November 2010, she wasn’t included in the festivities as Prince William’s fiancée.)
“I very much doubt she will be there,” a close insider tells PEOPLE. “But if Harry asks for something, she would say yes as she adores him.” But the source notes that meeting the entire family and spending key time with them could be an ordeal. “It would be a tall order for her, and possibly put her off for good!” the insider quips.
Royal biographer and Majesty magazine editor-in-chief Ingrid Seward, agrees, saying it would be “extremely difficult for her. Apart from the fact that it is unprecedented – which doesn’t necessarily stop Harry — I doubt she will be there. I don’t think he would put her through that, if she hasn’t met them all. It would be very stressful for her.”
Seward adds that Harry regularly seeks advice from his dad, Prince Charles. “And he would advise that it was not a good idea as the media would have them married off the next day!” Seward says.
But as one friend tells PEOPLE, “He is very serious about her,” and she is spending time with him in London just a week after he flew to Toronto to see her following his two-week tour of the Caribbean. Insiders say there is nothing to stop her being in the U.K. around the holidays and staying at one of the other royal homes, including nearby Anmer Hall — Will and Kate’s country home where she could join them for a shooting party and other festive fun after Christmas.
It’s still a little bit funny to me that Kate Middleton never spent Christmas with William until they were married. They were together for a decade before their wedding and Kate was never included. And you know why? Because of the Queen’s rules. It’s not a matter of Harry inviting Meghan to do this or that at Christmas. The Queen makes the rules and the Queen says “no girlfriends or boyfriends at Christmas.” Sure, Meghan could stay somewhere close to Sandringham and spend a few minutes here and there with Harry, but she wouldn’t be allowed to do much more than that.
…Now all that being said, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Meghan did meet the Queen during this visit, especially if a proposal does happen. Harry would want the Queen to meet Meghan before he proposed, right? Just not at Sandringham over Christmas.
Also: that People Magazine reminded me that Meghan actually has a busy 2017 planned. She’s making a charity trip to India in January, and she begins filming on Suits’ Season 7 in March. So even if there is a “Christmas engagement,” the wedding wouldn’t happen until the last half of the year anyway.
Oh, late-breaking: Harry and Meghan have been photographed for the first time. They made the cover of The Sun. You can see more photos here.

It must be sheer misery to be 32 years old and still have your Nana running your life.
IDK. If my Nana kept me in the style that Harry’s Nana keeps him, I might be inclined to follow her lead on some things.
^^ This. So Much This ^^
1000 times this!
Her kids have an awful track record with marriage, she should know by now that her whole approach to marriage and life is dumb. Let the 32 year old man bring his girlfriend for Christmas fgs. Gah!
I doubt Nana not inviting girlfriends/boyfriends to Christmas has any effect on the eventual length or happiness of the marriage.
That is all the responsibility of the people involved.
Her sticking her nose in their business, from how long to date, who to marry, where and how to live most definitely affected their marriages. Nan should try something new in her somerset years and let her 32 year old grandson bring his girlfriend to Christmas – just like the millions of loving nans around the world that will be doing exactly that.
If Her Majesty’s approach to marriage is that bad then why has her marriage to Philip lasted so long & is till going strong! Also why have the marriages of all her cousin’s, the Kent’s, Gloucester’s & Princess Alexandra all lasted & they are of the same era. Being married into any family means there are rules you have to abide by – they are the vows you take! If you can’t abide by them, don’t take them in the first place! Unfortunately Harry is not a normal young man, he was born into a Royal Family – he’s known the rules from a very young age – if he doesn’t want the rules & all the privileges that go with them, then step aside. Then Ms Markle will never be a royal!!
The only marriage that the Queen stuck her nose in was the one that didn’t happen. Her sisters.
Otherwise she has been hands off and all her kids/grandkids made their own decisions, for better or worse.
What are somerset years?
I am so stealing somerset years for daily use!
In all fairness, even “regular” families often have “no gf, no bf, at least not until it’s established and/or official” rule, just because they don’t want a random stranger creating awkwardness and appearing in family photos. Granted, most would consider “engagement” serious enough, but I’d totally see a lot of Moms asking their sons not to bring a 5-months-old relationship to a family gathering.
My husband and I were the same about not bringing our couples until we were quite serious because we are two individuals that don’t like others having opinions on our decisions. Actually I met my in-laws and he met my family when we were engaged. I guess the BRF is even more conservative in this department.
@poppy are you for real? It is well known that Prince Philip has cheated on her throughout their relationship.
He who pays the piper picks the tune!
It’s like Trump’s kids. He pays the piper, they all “adore” the sociopathic-NPD-senile old monster (Trump.) Sell their soul for $$ and position and the ability to never have to do anything they don’t want to do.
I’m in agreement that I think at best this is too much-too fast, and at worst, just a passionate fling for both. Passionate flings can be very intense. Real relationships take time spent together and how many days have they been together in 6 months? I would NEVER marry someone unless I lived near him and saw him frequently. You just don’t know someone in a long distance relationship – and I had many, so I feel confident saying that. Add in the special craziness of joining this family, plus the criticism she will get for her rather racy career, and I don’t see any real future happening here. At least not with the Queen’s permission.
And to think of my daughter marrying into this situation – never. I would be very fearful for her.
I think if Harry is that determined to spend Xmas with gf then spend Xmas with her and don’t attend his Granny’s party. It is Granny’s home, she controls who the guests are. If Harry doesn’t like it-then don’t go. However, I doubt he would stay away. As one other responder said He who pays the piper calls the tune…
And have new boyfriend/girldfiends there every year maybe? Why not wait one event when you are married? If you are not married there must be some reason for it so I would imagine that couples can handle one event apart a year. It is not like
must be quite nice though living in your nanas castle.
Christmas is the one day of the year HM asks of her family, and it is generally family-only. It is her tradition, and she’s obviously big on tradition. She even houses Sarah Ferguson at Wood Farm on the Sandringham Estate, so Beatrice and Eugenie can be with both parents at Christmas.
If MM isn’t there, no big surprise. It does add a twist to the annual “Will W&K deny the Queen her one day and parade to church with the Middletons instead?” stories.
It’s her house she can invite who she likes. Even my family has that rule:)
I’d marry anyone she likes, if I didn’t have to work ever, if I had private planes, trains, horses, diamonds, houses, had a chance to see the world, do charity work, have kids who won’t have to worry about anything… Act like a child forever? Sounds good to me.
They don’t ever have to get married. They can just live together. That is the best solution for both Harry, his Nana and this girl. She would never have to deal with royal crap.
Think of the flip side to that, though. While those things sound good, you will never be able to walk down the street without paps taking your picture, and strangers shoving their iphones in your face, which I think is almost worse. You won’t ever be able to go out to dinner again, unless you are in a private room. You won’t be able to sit outside at a cafe, having coffee, without great harassment. You can’t leave your home and get in your own car and go for a drive. You can’t leave without security. Even worse, your kids will always be in danger of being kidnapped or killed by terrorists looking for publicity or revenge. That, to me, is the worst part. It really is a gilded cage.
Personally, I’d like that financial security without that publicity. Without anyone really knowing my face, and recognizing me. Like an author who sells a LOT of books!! That would be great!
I read that she’s under contract on Suits until 2018. I’m worried Harry’s headed for heartbreak. I hope I’m wrong.
Also, I’m sorry, but if it was so easy for Meghan to hop to London this week, then Harry’s post-tour diversion to Toronto last week was just stupid and shows where his head is. And it’s not in the place where marriage decisions should be made.
Grace Kelly managed to break her contract with MGM, albeit being required to let them stage the wedding as a film production. If MM needed out of her Suits contract, it would happen.
NOTA, I totally agree. If she wants to be a full-time Royal, they will let her out of her contract, even if she has to pay them to do so.
BTW, I loved that Royal’s fashion site you recommended yesterday!! Lots of bling and hats!!
I’ve wasted many happy hours on the Sartorial Splendor site. Tiara Thursdays is a favorite!
OoS is the bomb! In addition to LAK and Kaiser here at Celebitchy
The contract is to stop her from taking other acting jobs that conflict with The Sutis filming schedule. The contract doesn’t regulate her personal life and she could easily get out of it if it was to move to the UK and marry Prince Harry.
She wouldn’t necessarily be obligated to quit her career. Many of the Queen’s children and grandchildren married people with careers that they continued working in, at least for a while. Harry could easily be given a diplomatic position in Canada.
Harry in Canada, eh? That’s one way for them to avoid both Brexit and Trump!
Why would he be given a diplomatic post in Canada?
Suits is filmed in Toronto (or was it Vancouver?) and that’s were Meghan lives.
He would not be able to be a proper diplomat as he would require protection and I promise we (Canada and especially Torontonians) would not be happy to pay for that for a year or more.
He could be Governor General. I would love that. A young GG with an actress wife. Canadians would love that, at least this Canadian would.
Maria, I am not sure PM Trudeau would appreciate the competition for selfies…LOL. Kidding (not kidding). Would be nice to have a punch of some youthfulness in stodgy, boring Ottawa…..eh?
Yes she would absolutely have to quit her career. Harry is a senior royal. See all the tweets from Victoria Arbiter today. This talk of her and Harry living in Canada and Harry being GG while she continues to act is total nonsense–unless of course they just up and quit being royals.
He couldn’t be Governor General — not anymore. All GGs have been Canadian citizens since 1952. A non-Canadian would never be offered that position today. Even if were Canadian, he is way too young to merit consideration (at 32 he’d be the youngest since the late 19th century), doesn’t seem to speak French (a necessity), and would be stuck living in Ottawa, a five-hour drive from Toronto.
(Correcting myself: at 32 he’d be the youngest, period. The youngest so far was 33, but that was a one-off.)
Nope. Canada – sovereign country. No foreign Governor Generals since the 50s.
Oh the romance, Grace Kelly leaves Hollywood to become a Princess. Well, that one didn’t work out too well, but who knows with Prince Ginge. I want this guy to be happy. He seems like a good one and like John John and his sorrow, I remember the footage of him walking behind his mom’s casket, and it still can bring a tear to my eye. Follow your heart Harry.
I love them! I always wanted William or Harry to get with an American…of course, I thought it would end up being an heiress, but I’m into Meghan as a future Duchess.
He’s gonna say …. hey there Nana, I want you to meet my light brown sugar lady…. lol. In my head that’s whats going to happen so that makes it true! I think this is just a preholiday boocation and then she will fly out, gotta get it when you can!
They must have heard s the “where are the photos” and released them. Nothing says narrative like adjusting to public sentiment.
That being said not sure about Meghan but either way engaged after six months seems stupid to me. Esp when you come with a ton of baggage like being a royal. Seems I’ll advised. We shall see…Harry’s been head over heels before and never pulled the trigger. Sounds like they are blowing this up a lot bigger than it is…or maybe this is one of those rare love at first sight things. Hmmm
OR…he walked down a busy street with his girlfriend and one of the many people there saw them and snapped a photo with their phone…jk it’s all a conspiracy 😉
Pretty sure this isn’t the first time they walked down a busy street. And judging by the photos those aren’t “randoms” with cell phones.
This wouldn’t be the first time any celeb has done the photo release thing
It looks like the photos are by a random person riding in a bus who got a lucky shot and then sold it to the tab.
It’s quite clear the photographer is riding a bus. You can see the rail/window of the bus.
It only seems too much too soon if you are believing every crap you read. The only ones taking about engagement or wedding are the media. They did the same when he dated Cressida. Harry and Meghan look content and happy, from all accounts they are. That’s all we need to know at this point, everything else is unneccessary noise.
Thank you. It doesn’t seem too fast if you look at the facts. It’s been six months, why can’t they both visit each other? I doubt she’ll spend Christmas with them, and I also doubt they’ll get engaged anytime soon. I love them.
Exactly. Plus, we don’t know exactly how long they’ve been together…
Meghan is actually interesting. She has good style and knows how to put on her makeup. She seems to enjoy charity work. She consistently works.
If Harry and Meghan do get engaged, Kate’s head might explode.
LOL – To be honest I think Kate appreciates the fact that the media spotlight is not directed at her. For once, she can take a breather. Meghan is actually doing Kate a favor!
She won’t really be able to take a breather. She’s still the future queen and has responsibilities for her privilege. Also, she’s very accustomed to being the main young royal lady, I’m not sure she’s going to like having competition. There is the inevitable comparisons that will be made between her and Harry’s wife. If Harry’s wife works hard and kate continues to be lazy, that won’t bode well for Kate.
I’m ambivalent. Really don’t care about either of them, but look at his face in that picture. That, ladies, is love. He looks happy.
The same “will the girlfriend spend christmas with HM” came around every year during the waity years. Surely even casual royal watchers know this by now, HM doesnt do christmas with girlfriends/boyfriends. Her house, her rules
For those in the UK, why am I seeing all the hate toward Meghan? The other day I was reading a story about this couple and the comments were brutal! Nothing about her race, but many, many about her age and being a divorced American. I don’t get it. She’s beautiful, successful, does humanitarian work and seems to make Harry happy. Since there is very little chance she would ever become Queen, why the hate?
I’m with you. I think she’d be a great Royal Duchess. Why the dislike?
Because comments sections of British tabloids are filled with the worst of humanity? Half of them not even from Britland?
Nobody I know cares one way or the other.
You mean deplorables? No one I know voted for Trump. Echo chambers, but somehow theirs is getting bigger.
Yes. Exactly.
She isn’t hated in the UK or anywhere, it’s just a handful of racists and jealous Royalty stans going off on one on every site they can find. Same with Mrs Cumberbatch basically.
Yes, this. No one cares, except a minority of nutters.
I don’t know for sure but I guessing that the vast majority of Britons don’t care about Harry or Meghan at all.
I think people are way too invested in this story, over analyzing the situation, and projecting. Seriously, she’s 35 he’s 32. If you know what you want an engagement after six months isn’t shocking at that age. In fact it used to be he norm. People didn’t spend 10 years dating; there’s no need to. If both parties are honest with other, on the level, and have similar values you can and should know pretty quickly if it’s going to work.
These days the problem is people are always on the prowl for something better and there’s a lack of willingness to commit.
The six to ninth mark is usually where people either make a commitment or decide to go their separate ways.
I agree. I was in my early 30’s when I met my husband. We met through a writing group, started long-distance dating, decided we wanted to get married about 7 months in and were married 5 months after making the decision. We’ve been married over 20 years.
Those are rare (but congrats 20 years is amazing) not the rule. And add in the fact that Harry’s life comes with a lot of pressure…it’s not normal. She could jump into marriage with him but it wouldn’t end well because she wouldn’t be prepared.
That’s true. When I was young, I wanted to be a princess. Then I grew up and realized what a horrid life that is for someone. No thanks!
For these two marriage is a much bigger choice. It involves Meghan taking on a whole new life for the rest of her life, potentially millions of dollars for a wedding, and press scrutiny in perpitude. It’s a huge decision and not the same as deciding to marry a nice guy that works in tech. I really hope they don’t rush in (and I’m rooting for them).
Good points both, about their age and about his position. He’s alluded to the difficulties that marrying him could bring, yes? Maybe he can work toward finding a modern solution – he seems to have a heart and wants to share it.
I love it. I love that we are discussing it every day! I love that no one knows anything about it and we are awash in speculation and hearsay. This is pure gossip at its finest.
I love that I am gunning for an Elvis chapel wedding in Vegas and Sixer is barracking for the full royal Monte wedding – St. Pauls! 25 foot veils! The George V (or whatever it’s called) diadem! Making out on the Buck House balcony after!
We will see who wins that one ; )
We need this after being awash in sh*t news for months. We deserve this.
I’ve now decided that the koh-i-noor should not be repatriated after all. It should be the bling for the engagement ring.
I would settle for the Elvis chapel but I’m more going for coaches and St Martin-in-the-Field and better bling than Katie Keen.
Mostly, I want anything that will make the racist, sexist Daily Fail spontaneously combust, along with its cohorts of worst-of-Britain commenters.
I agree so, so much that we deserve all of this.
And they should bring out the stomacher jewels.
Infact, truss her up like Alexandra on coronation day.
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KYGcz0jdNsc/T1P_dd8okGI/AAAAAAAAGbc/2gOu6EXXnhU/s1600/AlexandraCoronation1.jpg
This would be marvellous!
Hmm. To merge the two, perhaps the sky diving FlyingElvi could be part of the wedding flyover?
My goal is to make the very-hypothetical-at-this-point wedding as horrifyingly American as possible. If not Vegas, then Cliffside at Big Sur with Harry wearing board shorts would do nicely.
But if we must compromise, flying Elvi will work quite well.
If it’s in california, i vote for Harry in his tropical uniform.

I want my Christmas wedding fantasy at St. Martin in the Field. HO HO HO!!!
Me too. I want your version. At christmas.
The Elvis look-a-like could jump out of a Red Arrow flypast? This is genius, Nota. I want this. But I do want St Martin-in-the-Field too. I love that church.
Or, or, or. What about York Minster? I love York Minster. And then John Sentamu, the best churchy-man in Britain, could officiate! With the reception at Betty’s Tea Room? We could make a case for this one with something something Northern Powerhouse*.
(For Americans: Northern Powerhouse is what politicians in the UK waffle on about when they want to pretend that London isn’t sucking up all the money.)
Will the flying Elvi be welcome in Yorkshire?
Well, he’d just land far-from-anywhere in the dales somewhere and would become the stuff of urban legend sightings. Which is the only proper fate for Elvis, right?
It isn’t just one fellow. The official group is 10-12 who jump together and perform aerobatics on the way down. How about them forming a heart-shape mid-air while trailing red white and blue smoke from their white Elvis boots?
And a Glass coach! Never forget the Glass coach!!!
I’m still mad at Kate for turning it down. What’s the point of participating in an anachronism if you aren’t willing to go all out. Especially when said glass coach was made for the express purpose of transporting royal brides!!!!
Will the koh-i-noor fit inside the glass coach with the Flying Elvi? And the 25 foot train? And the bride herself? I hear it’s tight in there.
It held Diana+ her father+ Diana’s giant dress + 25ft train comfortably, i think the 25 Elvises might have to ride alongside on horseback instead of the usual lifeguards.
Infact…..memories…….
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=l6TDNm0VbrE
Start at 1.32sec to see that l-o-n-g train
Plus the three Cinderella fairies. Cos if we’re blinging it AND Yankifying it, we need the Disney fairies.
We need to get Disney to lend us an auxiliary coach.
what WAS the whole point of turning down the glass coach? It still bothers me. I know there was some blah blah blah about arriving as Miss Middleton and leaving as a princess but it just didn’t ring true for me
Tough Cookie: yep. blah blah being a commoner marrying a prince blah blah blah false modesty.
I think Fergie did it right arriving in a floral headress and exiting in a tiara to signal the same.
Harry has saved 2016!
🙂
Lol, I’m loving this thread. Agree 100%, suze. As a gossip junkie and royal watcher, this is heaven to me.
I want a big royal wedding. Soon. Blingiest of bling included. Lots of it.
I’m surprised at how much this aspiring ingenue looks like her prospective waity Katie sister in law.
She is the prettier Pippa!
Pippa 2.0 but we will have to wait to see you f here derrière takes over the world to know for sure. Can’t wait for the “wedding”.
I think this will make him happy for awhile and they may marry but I can see this ending up like Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.
Divorce in the long run.
I think being a wife in the royal circle is very tough if you have some “sass” to you! (Unlike waiting Kate Middleton)!
Apparently she is not spending Christmas with him or his family. I don’t see The Queen approving a possibility of marriage with these two. This is only my opinion so calm down people.
I don’t see anything happening that quickly either. If the Queen loves Harry as much as supposedly she does she may relent. But what would be her objection?
Now that the “no pics so it’s not real” jig is up, the loons will cling on to the exact science of body language (as they always do). Clearly, this precious caucasian cinnamon roll is being manipulated and held hostage by this evil, conniving wench. It’s obvious he can’t stand her, just look at their body language! #wakeupsheeple
They’re not looking into each other’s eyes! They’re not kissing! She is stalking him!
Some people do need to grow up.
I think a visit to Balmoral comes first, doesn’t it? Even Kate and Diana didn’t spend Xmas at Windsor until after the engagement, which basically means, after the wedding as these are usually in the spring/summer.
If they bought the tree together it’s a safe bet they’re spending Xmas together, but taking her to Windsor to meet HM might be a premature guess UNLESS he really did pop the question already and needs HM’s blessing.
All that said, I tend to agree with the author that something about this is starting to feel like one of those fever infatuations. I dunno – she’s so obviously had her boobs and nose done, she’s taken off her clothes on TV, she’s three years older than he is, the acting career . . . American, Catholic, divorced . . .
I dunno. I was kind of already thinking scones and clotted cream in the middle of the night in a few months (which I did for Kate and William, the dogs were totally confused at lights coming on and breakfast being eaten at 2AM – you can get Dover cream now at Whole Foods) while waiting for the bride’s arrival . . . but I dunno. I’m beginning to wonder meself.
Since when did plastic surgery make someone unsuitable for royal marriage?
Especially for an actor?
If that were the case, why didn’t the Queen say no to Duchess Kate?
As for being 3 years older, that is not a big deal.
As for “taking her clothes off on TV” and being an actor, this rolls back to the Victorian era when women in drama were thought of as being like prostitutes.
If the Queen sees suitability for Harry and someone stable, poised and attractive who can polish, not tarnish, the royal image, she’ll say yes. If he wants her, and the Queen says no, he could step aside and marry anyway – he has his own money, as does she. He’s not getting any younger either, and if the Queen says no and he calls it off, he’ll need to start his lonely search all over again – only with yet more highly suitable women knowing their pasts will be called into question for being — in the year 2016 – divorced! the wrong kind of Christian! having careers! being “too old!” being born in the wrong place! and so on. If Harry feels she’s “the one,” it’s kind of a now-or-never.
Interesting Question?
What do you think does the Queen think about it? After Fergie and Kate Middleton she should be rather glad to get somebody who has both feet on the ground?
I think the only objection would really be her taking off her clothes for television. It doesn’t matter if you think that is an outdated objection – we are talking the Royals here. They aren’t even supposed to be without stockings in public, nevertheless showing the world their boobs and butts. I’m not royal, and I wouldn’t be comfortable with my son marrying a woman who was mostly naked in hot steamy love scenes on television.
My money is on a hot, passionate infatuation, finished in another couple of months.
Kate has actually flashed people on more than one occasion while doing her royal duties and has shown more nudity than MM ever has on Suits. There is no nudity on that show. She has been seen in her bra in the few love scenes over the course of seven years. This cannot be a serious objection to MM as wife to Harry.
Middleton never had or passed the Balmoral test. I wasn’t aware that plastic surgery, proven or speculated, is illegal or immoral.
Buying a tree doesn’t mean they’re spending Christmas Day together. They may have purchased the tree and are having their own early Christmas celebration. Maybe she is going to LA to spend it with her mother and he’ll be at Sandringham.
Markle’s career is not a problem, she is not Koo Stark. She hasn’t been caught dumping royal responsibilities so she can sunbathe topless in France, now has she? Law banning royals from marrying Catholics was abolished in 2015.
Camilla, Duchess of Kent, and Kate Middleton are older than their royal husbands. Princess Anne is 5 years older than Tim Laurence. Camilla converted from Catholicism (Thanks LAK), Duchess of Kent converted to it. Prince Michael of Kent is married to a divorced German/Hungarian Catholic. Lord Freddie Windsor is married to Sophie Winkleman of 3 1/2 Men, who happens to be Jewish.
Charles married a divorcee. Anne divorced her first husband and married Tim Laurence, the man she was having an affair with.
Autumn Phillips is Canadian. Gary Lewis is Maori. Princess Michael of Kent is German and Hungarian. Duchess of Gloucester is Danish. Sophie Winkleman is American. Being a different nationality, gasp even American, is not a problem.
W-A of the Netherlands married a Catholic Argentinian, and Maxima retains her Catholic faith instead of converting. Fred of Denmark married an Australian who converted. Philippe of Belgium married a Polish/Belgian noble. Rainier of Monaco married an American, his son married a South African who converted to Catholicism. Maximilian of Liechtenstein, who is the second son of the (wingnut) reigning prince, married an Afro-Panamanian 11 years older than he is.
Thanks for breaking down the royal marriages. I don’t get the vitriol towards Meghan. At all. Harry is obviously besotted and so is she. I’m happy for them. As for the assertions that Waity was never brought to Balmoral before marriage, that falls on William, who was treating his longtime girlfriend like she wasn’t someone suitable to marry. He acted like there was always someone better waiting around the corner. If Meghan is the one, she’ll meet the Queen long before we know about it.
I just want to add, NOTA, because your post was amazing – that Máxima’s father was a Minister during Argentina’s dictatorship. She was allowed to marry in, and created a Princess in her own right, because the Dutch did not judge HER on her father’s actions (he was not part of the Junta, as so many like to state, but he was a public servant in a defacto government). Her sister in law Mabel did not have the same luck, though.
Meghan is as perfect as anyone can be. She is catholic – SO WHAT. We Catholics are just as good as anyone else. She is a divorcee – hold my pearls, please. She is an actress – that means she has her own wealth and a good work ethic. She is charitable – BINGO, exactly what her role will entail. She had surgery? So have countless other women, particularly those in the BRF. Kate has had extensive tweaks and surgery. Look at Princess Michael. She’s American… when did this become a negative?
People have a problem with Meghan because she’s American and black. If she were a white american actress I doubt so much hate would be thrown at her. Meghan is a problem to racists, particularly those not aware of the extension of their racism.
Cee: further to your comment, for years now so-called Harry dans wanted to see him with a woman who wasn’t fished from his usual circles, was a humanitarian, non-Brit, non-white, had a career, close in age, educated, life experience, no family money, work ethic,……..then Meghan showed up, and they lost tgeir minds. How dare Meghan be the woman they had all wished for?
Thanks, Cee. I’m a Mabel fan girl. She made mistakes, she and Friso trying to cover it up made it worse. But she works hard for Girls Not Brides, and goodness knows her life hasn’t been easy in the last few years. Odd that she lost her own father to an accident when she was so young; now she’s a single mum to daughters in the same position.
LAK, the unicorn is *real*, that’s the fangirl problem.
@LAK – Harry was the Internet Boyfriend and now that he is someone else’s real, actual boyfriend, some fans can’t handle it.
Remember the “Keep Calm Harry is Still Single” parafernalia around William’s engagement and wedding? The last Prince is about to be locked down.
You know the Royal Family. Do you really think they will accept a woman who was mostly naked on television, in steamy love scenes with another man? They make the women wear stockings all of the time!! There is NO WAY the Queen approves of this as a marriage.
Why can’t people just see this as Harry having fun, and leave it at that? People get all invested in this being “the one.” But from things I’ve read here and elsewhere, Harry falls really hard for women – I’ve read of more than one account that he continually texts any woman he’s interested in. I think he is needy and wants to be in love – not a very healthy way to approach relationships.
I wish him well, I wish her well, but I doubt this is permanent. And everyone here certain that it is to be is being silly. There are a lot of obstacles to this.
@sarah you have never watched Suits if you say MM was mostly naked in that show. She was never naked. NEVER.
So I know you are probably a troll, but let’s put it this way, if she was naked in the show, the daily Mail would have blasted it all over the place already. They have not. The most they could find was a kissing scene while she is wearing her bra.
Um – I could swear that Middleton went to Balmoral before the engagement and actually went out on a shooting expedition, coming back and exclaiming what “inspirational people” Will’s relatives were like the insipid climber she is. Or maybe it was the other country place, in Norfolk. and I’m mixing Balmoral and Sandringham up?
Cee, I am Catholic too and understand your feelings on this. You have to go waay back in English history to understand the way some feel about Catholics: the fear etc. Starting with Henry VIII deciding he didn’t want Catherine of Aragon but wanted to shag Anne Boleyn (she wouldn’t give it up without a ring) but couldn’t get a divorce/annulment from the Pope. So he decided no more Pope, he’d be the Head of his own church! His son Edward VI and daughter Elizabeth I made further moves to reform the church in England with Mary I in between going back to Catholic church. Her reign is possibly part of the resentment to the dreaded “Papists”, with good reason. Then you get into succession of James II and the Stuarts. I can’t sum it up but Catholics in England (and then there’s Ireland) were treated dreadfully for centuries….sorry for the sermon….
@LAK, the reason why the fandom was so emphatic about the exhaustive list of wishes for the type of woman Harry would choose is because they never expected him to meet it. They bought into the myth that he only liked blondes and felt they were “safe” with their stated preferences thinking that he would NEVER choose her. It’s funny actually, it’s almost as if took the fandom’s list and checked off every point.
Sixer, now this really has to happen. I will be there for my cream tea, without a doubt!
Nic919, Yes, I’m a troll because I don’t think the BRF will accept a woman who had on a pair of underwear and nothing else while rubbing up against another almost naked man.
Hey, she’s an adult, she’s free to do what she wants, but we are talking about the BRF. Nope. Not going to happen. And if it does, she will run like hell after a few years of this.
But I’m just a troll. 😉
sarah, your objections read as ridiculous in 2017. There is nothing in Markle’s career that stops her from being welcomed into the royal family. Did you forget Middleton in the sheer skirt turned into a dress? Or KM on the catwalk in her lingerie, pants unbuttoned, cozied up to the male model?
Why would she run from the BRF, as long as she has Harry to watch her back and encourage her in her work? It wouldn’t be like Andrew being away from Fergie 320 days a year for most of their marriage.
There are hard-working, dedicated career folks who married into royal families and are doing just fine. Queen Maxima, Queen Mathilde, Queen Rania, Queen Letizia, Prince Daniel of Sweden. If they can adapt, Markle can too.
mort364, she’s like Sandra Bullock’s list of the ideal man in Practical Magic, a list designed to make sure he couldn’t be real. But here is Markle, made to order, checks all the items on the list, and they’re against her because she’s real.
What on earth is Dover cream?
Is it pretend clotted cream that nobody is allowed to call clotted cream because clotted cream is a good EU protected designation unlike straight bananas (because everyone knows that straight bananas and other EU food fascisms are why we left the EU)?
Sixer I know you’re joking but you have no idea what I’d give to get clotted cream in Buenos Aires. I’m afraid of making it myself – takes too long and my kitchen might implode.
I love clotted cream so I can sympathise!
I believe she meant Devon cream, available here in Canada as well. Yum.
What is Devon cream?! I live in Devon. We don’t have such a thing as Devon cream any more than we have such a thing as Dover cream.
I am thinking these are fake names for clotted cream (cos there really is an EU protection for the name clotted cream)? The solid cream you have with scones and jam, is that what you guys mean?
This is almost as bad as the breakfast beans outrage!
@hmmm – you are correct I meant Devon cream, and yes you can get it out here in Whole Foods.
It is delicious with jam on scones but it doesn’t keep long, you really have to finish the little jar as soon as possible, not that that is a problem.
For the rest of my comment, here is my take on the dilemma facing modern royalty and why I brought up certain issues: today’s royals want to seem modern, but they also want to retain their “specialness” and mystique. If anyone can marry in, what is so special about being royal except the perks of the game?
So I’m looking at this not from my perspective but wondering if they have any lines to draw any longer, because the more indistinct the lines get – the less “special” royalty gets. To me, that’s the crux of what I’m trying to get at. American? Divorced? Noticeably altered breasts and nose? Clothes off on TV? Are there any lines left, and if not, why pay the lot of them to be special? Remember the line about the “fierce light that beats upon a throne” from Idylls of the King? The intense lasering Harry’s fiancée will come under will make Hollywood look tame by comparison. The jokes about the boobs and nose, the cartoons, the comments all over the blogs, the endless scrutinizing for signs of pregnancy . . .
Believe me, personally, I could care less who Harry marries. As I said, I’m already ready to offer designs on the dress and planning the 2AM breakfast. It’s not my problem, it’s potentially the Windsors.
And I never heard anything about Kate having any sort of cosmetic surgery. And Charles married a divorcee after his former wife was no longer living AND he couldn’t get married through a religious service. And his wife, as I understand, is in fact the current Princess of Wales – only no one will call her that, instead she has to be the Duchess of Cornwall.
For me this is just fun. But I’m betting there’s some anxiety going on behind the walls of Buck House and Kensington Palace.
Seriously, there is no such thing as Devon cream. In Devon. You buy it in a jar? It’s UHT? Not clotted cream then! What on earth IS it?
The EU has straight bananas? Only? Or do they also have gay bananas? And are they allowed to share a bunch with the regular guys, or are they relegated to their own, sad little corner of the warehouse? For that matter, are bananas guys or girls? Is a pomegranate basically the female banana? Is there a discount on them? If so, which group is more likely to be on sale for fashion week? Have there been any heartfelt discussions about methods of banana straightening in light of quality control? Or did someone quote the late psychiatrist when he said, “sometimes a banana is just a banana.”
@Sixer – it says Devon cream on the jar, and apparently it is what you are supposed to put on scones, and it has a special taste because of the grass the cows eat in Devon that produce the milk that is turned into the cream. And it is thick, you apply it with a spoon, not liquid like our “whipping cream”. And it is hugely fattening and utterly delicious and it SAYS it comes from Devon, England.
SO – you tell me. If that isn’t Devon cream, what is – or isn’t?
It SOUNDS like clotted cream but a weird version because you don’t buy heat-treated long-life clotted cream in a jar. Good grief, that would be sacrilege! You buy it in the chilled section. There is no such product in the UK as Devon cream, but I imagine what you are talking about is an approximation of clotted cream, presumably named because scone, jam and clotted cream teas are popular in Devon.
The protected naming of regional food products within the EU is a real thing, btw. I think – but don’t quote me on it – there is EU protection for “clotted cream” (it must be made in Cornwall) and also for “Devon cream tea” (you can’t have them outside Devon). But the cream in question is the same product. Clotted!
This is almost as bad as breakfast beans!
@Sixer,
Devon cream is a commercially produced clotted cream product. You can order it through Amazon. I haven’t tasted it but the Brits in my office say it is fine – not great and not the real thing, but an admirable effort and better than most products with the clotted cream label.
Thanks, Suze.
When you come to stay for the Yankified-Blingified Wedding of the Century – because we’ll both get invitations for sure after all this free planning – I’ll take you to the Salty Monk, which does the best cream teas near to me. Scones baked to order and everything!

Sorry, graymatters. I missed you.
Straight bananas refers to the various fake news – like fake news is a recent phenomenon – campaigns against the EU promulgated by British tabloids over the last decades. Eg: EU TSARS WANT TO MEASURE OUR BANANAS! BANANA MOUNTAIN CAUSED BY JUNCKER’S MAD EU REGIME! BARMY BRUSSELS EUROCRATS BAN STRAIGHT BANANAS!
I’m just joking but such anti-EU fake news campaigns are/were real and, given Brexit, not the least bit funny really. Other hilarities I recall include the metric martyrs march, the possible banning of the Corgi as a dog breed – won’t anyone think of Her Maj?! – the eurosausage and more. The list is endless!

@seesittellsit There are different standards for the people who will become the monarch (Charles, William, George). It was best for Charles and Camilla to have a civil wedding because he will be the Supreme Governor of the Church of England one day. Harry is not in that position.
And I really don’t think that the Queen is going to object to Meghan, if Harry wanted to marry her. Would she have been the Queen’s first choice for him? Probably not. But she wouldn’t go so far as to withhold her permission for marriage either.
It is up to the discretion of the director of the local church whether divorced people can marry in the CoE. The local in this case decided to err on the side of caution.
Camilla herself chose to go by the title Duchess of Cornwall, nobody stopped her from calling herself Princess of Wales and technically she is the Princess of Wales.
HM appears to like people who work hard. She pointedly let it be known that she was displeased with party girl Middleton, and for those short 9 months, KM pretended to work a part part time job in response. HM won’t have a problem with MM’s career. There is no such thing as royal blood, their “specialness” these days comes from working to earn their perks.
I think there is hand-wringing at BP because of the mess W&K have made of things in the last five years. The upcoming French media trial is no doubt causing sleepless nights for the Firm. Harry possibly marrying someone who knows how to work, give a speech, and act like a professional? They might be down on their knees begging these two to get married.
Seesittellsit, your comment is amazing. You got the forward, the backward, the underhanded and the backhanded of public opinion all rolled into one.
@Olenna – and I’m wickedly enjoying every minute of it over my lunch break as I slave away at my wearisome office job, wondering if I could own that cashmere sweater Kate was wearing if I saved up for . . . six months. 🙂 And they wonder why I am snippy sometimes . . .
See, keep being snippy! CB is should be fun, not a battleground. BTW, I saw Melly’s comment about the thrift shop and she’s right about finding high quality items in thrift stores. Just recently, I found a Pendleton wool skirt, a Longchamp pouchette, and an Eileen Fisher sweater that looked like they’ve never been worn or used. None of the items were over $10 a piece.
He can marry a catholic now without losing his rights. He himself could not convert and stay in line. Michael of Kent and others who’d married Catholics got their place back under the new act.
On the surface they look happy and compatible. Below the surface, good for Harry for getting involved with someone truly, personally suitable, not only socially suitable. It appears he found someone who might work with him and his life. I like the idea of them and hope they can, if they want, stick it out. It might mean keeping their distance from the court.
I feel like we are seeing Harry in his first real “adult” relationship. Chelsy was more coming of age, and I felt like he was wading in the kiddie pool with Cressida. Meghan is smart, accomplished, and charitable in her own right. He seems happy in those pics and I hope he enjoys this moment whether it leads to marriage or not. It’s his life, not ours. I also don’t get the impression from Harry that he would choose someone poor for the role. He seems to gravitate to women with lives and accomplishments of their own. I’m also not convinced they have only been dating 6 months. The way this thing has shot out of the gate like a cannon makes me think that they were secretly dating longer than what we have been told. Harry knows how to disappear and he has been doing it for a while now.
I agree. This is a very different realtionship to the ones he had before. I’m positive about these two.
@mort364, I feel like none of us have any idea of how mature, solid, and stable Meghan is, and if this is passion or a mature relationship in the making. They act like it’s passion right now. And the dissing of Cressida, an educated young lady in her own light as some dippy blonde dope as others have done here is pretty offensive and somewhat sexist on its own.
@AT, how can you be positive about this? Did you talk to them? This is just getting silly.
@sarah, while I do not know Meghan personally, I do know as a woman who owns and runs her own business and her own home that there is a certain level of maturity and stability that comes with the ability to maintain. Like it or not, she is gainfully employed in her chosen profession. Let us not dismiss the fact that Meghan is also very well educated. My comments about Cressida were about her life experience level, not her education level. Harry has traveled the globe, started his own charity, served 2 tours in Afghanistan, and continues to serve his country via his royal duties. Cressida was fresh out of school and had not even begun to realize her life’s dreams. If I recall correctly, she wants to be a dancer and actress. Both Harry and Meghan have some life under them. Whether they choose to marry or not, and it is THEIR choice, they should be allowed to enjoy their time together in peace. Whatever the choice, I wish them well.
Um, this does not surprise me AT ALL. I have several friends who met their husbands at 33/34 and were married by 34/35. At 36, I am hoping for something similar – you can weed men out much easier by being very thoughtful about it.
When i lived in London 3 years ago, I got hit on by more men in 3 months than the first 32 years of my ENTIRE life. I realized this was likely due to my #BlackGirlMagic. I would literally walk into a pub and it would get weirdly quiet and men would come over to pull out a chair, buy me a pint, or just stare with a weird smile. I think b/c not a lot of women looked like me in Zone 1 where I lived (working professional, near the business district of the City and Consulting center). I realized this might be what blond women in America must feel like when they walk into a room.
So, Yessssssss. I hope they get married and have lots and lots of biracial (read: Black) babies!!!!!! (Mwah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah). #BlackGirlMagic
Yas to all the #blackgirlmagic
Hmmm, maybe I need to move to London…
In all seriousness though, their kids will be 1/4 black, like Robin Thicke’s son.
The black will basically be breeded out which is why I’m not too keen on this union.
Plus biracial with red hair is a tragic combo.
Mixed race red heads aren’t ugly. They are as beautiful as regular red heads, but with olive skin tone rather than super pale skin tone.

Not to mention actress Carmen Ejogo who is mixed race Nigerian/Scottish. Her natural haircolour is reddish brown.

Very true–I’ve always experienced the same when in England. And Germany. Seriously, the #blackgirlmagic is strong in Germany.
Their first photographed date was at my friend’s play! He tweeted that he was told “to be respectful.” (He has not been respectful.)
ohh, do tell us more!
Your friend is in Curious Incident? How cool! That play is brilliant.
No, he wrote it. He’s a genius and you should all follow him on Twitter.
Simon Stephens? Very cool. Any chance we’re going to get a production of Heisenberg in London? I’d love to see it.
He looks so happy! I love them and I hope they get engaged, although I do worry about how cruel some are about her. She’s gorgeous, does charity work, and has a job. What’s there to object to? (Did Kate work at all during the ten years she waited for William to propose?)
I am still trying to figure out how this is all Meghan Markle’s fault and what exactly anyone is doing that’s wrong in this relationship… ? .
Meghan stole their internet boyfriend. It’s as irrational as the Cumberbitches’ reaction to his fiance then wife.
Some of them are so deep in delusion that they’re refusing to accept that the two people in the Sun pics are actually Harry and Meghan! To quote (well, paraphrase) the denying of one delusional I came across earlier today: ‘You can’t even see their faces!!!! there are loads of red headed men in London, it could be anyone, why are you all believing it’s him!!!!’
Fun times ahead. 🙂
All I can say is that I will go down with this ship, like Dido said.
She has the possibility of becoming the only modern working royal amongs the younger royals in the BRF. The rest of the european houses have done this over a decade ago and we all have seen Kate fall flat. I hope they don’t rush into anything, but they’re both in their 30s and sometimes the right person comes along at the right time and everything falls in place.
If I was Harry i wouldn’t want to bring Meghan to a royal family Christmas. Meeting some of his relatives might put the poor girl off.
Kate didn’t meet any of Williams family until they were engaged – Harry was the only one that she’d met on occasion. She hadn’t even met Chuck until she got the ring of doom. William kept her far away from his family – not the way you treat an alleged serious gf.
Haz and Megs do look cute together.
She may not have officially met some of them. She had enough pre-engagement contact to bully Beatrice and Eugenie. Instead of attending his cousin Peter’s wedding in 2008, William flew to Africa to attend Jecca’s brothers wedding. KM attended Peter and Autumn’s wedding solo and met HM and some others for the first time there.
William’s last stand against KM / a proposal? *LOL*
Not true, Kate met Prince Charles while she was still at St Andrews
I am divided on Meghan Markle. I don’t know why but she rubs me the wrong way in some ways.
Everybody seems so enthusiastic about her. I am weary of such public enthusiasms.
I’m not ‘enthusiastic’ about her. I’ve never seen her on screen, never heard her speak, never even heard of her until the relationship became public, and she occupies no time in my life other than on here (which is where, despite my living in London, all my royal ‘news’ comes from.)
What I AM, by default, is unable to stand back when I see, at best, such petty, mean-mindedness towards someone who, as far as I can see, has done nothing to warrant it, and, at worst, the torrent of abuse she’s been subjected to since she committed the crime of dating a member of the brf.
No one needs to like her or care about her but everyone with an ounce of decency should rise up against the hateful, irrational wrath that’s being directed at her.
If your last paragraph was directed at me – it was misdirected.
It wasn’t. 🙂
I was merely explaining why I, and possibly other people here, might come across as ‘enthusiastic’ about her.
I want to be the kind of woman who has the self-confidence to, when out and about with PRINCE EFFING HARRY, sport the “black beanie” look.
I’d rather have my head freeze, snap off, and roll in the gutter of the streets of London than sport a beanie with a prince.
Why on earth would she be subservient to him? She has accomplished way more in life than he has. He was just born into a title.
Who said anything about subservience? I made a comment on her headwear choices and how mine would be different.
Ok, seeing her picture right next to Kate’s is a bit disturbing. I always agreed that she looked a lot like Pippa, but wow… Makes you wonder if Harry does (or did) have something going on with Kate!
Oh puhleese… it was the press that tried to make out that Harry had a “type”. … clearly, the posh blondes were eye/arm candy… he’s seen up front and personal what his brother has and this has had an impact on him, hence the influence on his decision. And oh, look closely… his grandmother who has a tremendous amout of influence over him, was a brunette… look at all her photos when she was a young princess… she was so pretty… a brunette… Simples…
This article from today’s Daily Mail is from Piers Morgan, who met with Meghan just about the time when she started dating Prince Harry…
“A few days ago, they bought a Christmas tree together and took it back to Harry’s home in Kensington Palace.
Surely the ultimate sign that this is a serious relationship?
I mean, you don’t buy a Christmas tree with someone you’re flaky about, right?
So rumours, naturally, are ablaze that they may be about to announce their engagement.
To which I say: bring it on!”

Huh? I’m not sure you were responding to me. I never said anything about a type, or blondes.
I dont see a problem with them dating. Theyre both adults. I think she’s kinda cute, very American looking.
I do not have a dog in this hunt but just some Commons sense observations. They are young and new to their love which makes everything seem better and you feel great. The times they spend together are like being on vacation and not part of their everyday life
They are uncomfortable with how she’s being treated in the media but if she marries that will be her everyday life. I do not know them or anything about them but until they live together with the daily grind (rich people have grinds too. Just different sort than us regular folk) I don’t think they have a true sense of how they fit together
Of course I could be all wrong, again because I do not know them, and could be they’re all set and ready to spend the rest of their life together. Just seems like they are living a fairytale existence (pun intended LOL) right now by meeting up on the Run and having a finite amount of time together before they part company for a bit and then meet up again.
Seems like you would not have enough time together to ever get on each others nerves
I think there’s a difference between the normal lack of privacy and media intrusion that all the British royals (in particular) are subject to, and the racist commentary that the Daily Mail, in particular, produced. The first comes with the territory, but they are quite right to object to the latter.
I’m fascinated that an all American middle class girl can have such an easy comfortable relationship with a British aristocrat of the highest order. For two people who come from such diverse backgrounds to find each other, maybe it is “meant to be”.
I’m not sure how I feel about her either.’on the one hand, she seems pleasant and if the charity work is genuine, that is something they would have in common. At the same time, she’s a c-list actress on a c-list show with a clothing line at a c-list store. I don’t know. But then what do they care what the plebes think?
As opposed to an unemployed party girl:
– who has never worked to support herself
– who spent a decade falling drunk out of clubs 4 nights a week
– who kept at least one pap and reporter on speed dial to reveal the locations where she and her boyfriend were staying
– who was supported by her parents for a decade while she stalked a prince
NOTA – all of what you say about Waity is true. But I’m still entitled to have an opinion and Waity’s useless has nothing to do with it.
Where did I say you aren’t allowed to have an opinion? You expressed yours, I’m responding with mine.
There seem to be a lot of people who think Markle is unsuitable to be a royal. My opinion? She’s fine, nothing questionable about her or her background when we realize it is almost 2017. Works, supports herself, knows how to give a speech. She’d fit in just fine.
NOTA – I am interested in seeing Waity’s reaction to all of this… perhaps this is part of the reason they are skipping Christmas with the Queen – they are in a snit or plotting some horrible PR revenge…
“she’s a c-list actress on a c-list show with a clothing line at a c-list store. I don’t know.”
Srsly? She’s well-known enough, she has a steady job and makes crazy money compared to most of her peers. She seems addiction-free and stable… what is the problem here? Do only A-list actresses matter? A lot of actors would LOVE to have a years-long contract on a popular tv show.
