I actually don’t mind when Kate Hudson takes about weight. I think she has an insane figure and I feel like CB does, that Kate speaks about it in a very healthy manner, losing it in a reasonable timeframe and not going to extremes to get there. In addition, she doesn’t pretend like she doesn’t work hard to maintain her figure and admits she slips up. Kate’s book, Pretty Happy: Ways to Love Your Body, was released in February. She also has her Fabletics activewear line so it makes sense she is still speaking about bodies and weight in interviews. She was recently on Chelsea Handler’s show and they discussed Kate’s weight gain during her pregnancies and her struggle to lose the baby weight.
Kate Hudson can still remember a time when she didn’t feel her best self, physically.
“Remember when you had that first baby and you gained like 150 lbs.?” Chelsea Handler jokes to the actress on Wednesday’s episode of her Netflix show Chelsea. “It was like Shallow Hal, remember? Oh my God.”
“I loved it too — I relished in that moment of my [life],” she says.
There’s one specific instance that occurred the month before her now almost-teenage son‘s birth that Hudson remembers extra fondly.Ways to Love Your Body encourages readers toward living a healthy lifestyle without putting too much pressure on themselves to be “perfect” — says it was a bit of a wake-up call in conjunction with advice from her OB/GYN.
“Even my doctor was like, ‘You know, you should try not to eat so much,’ ” she recalls. “And then after I had Ryder, that was when it sort of hit me … and then, trying to lose the weight and being in that year of my life was really interesting, ’cause then all of a sudden you have the baby and then all of a sudden you’re 70 lbs. overweight.”
“Then all of a sudden you feel very scrutinized, then all of a sudden you feel like you need to hurry up and [lose the weight].”
Continues the actress, “And it was actually emotional ’cause I couldn’t lose the weight. You plateau. Anybody who’s had that moment in their life, it just sucks.”
“There’s a catch-22 — it is just about health, isn’t it?” she says.
“So you have to then say, ‘Well, f— the people who are scrutinizing me, but I do want to get healthy. I don’t want to keep the weight on like that. I don’t want to get discouraged.’
I got irrationally angry at Handler’s Shallow Hal joke. She and Kate are friends so I’m sure Kate wasn’t bothered but it sounded so insensitive to me, which is pretty standard for how I feel about all Handler’s comments. Kate also told a story about Ben Stiller in which she went to a party at his house in a size 2 spandex dress two weeks before she gave birth to Ryder and he opened the door and said, “You’re huge.” I get the feeling that Kate is trying to be relatable here but she has used those numbers before. Medical recommendations for a normal pregnancy weight gain is 25-35 pounds or 28-40 pounds for underweight women so if Kate put on 70 pounds, yes, her gain was more than is medically suggested. I did not gain 70 pounds with either pregnancy but I did feel like Kate. I was called huge, asked if I was sure I wasn’t having twins and had my due date questioned throughout both but I never felt bad about it. Even now I see pics of myself and all I see is a pregnant woman. I challenge Handler to call me Shallow Hal, though – I’d relish the opportunity to respond to that.
Even with her fitness push, Kate is returning to acting. Not only is she apparently pitching a comedy series with her mother, Goldie Hawn, but I didn’t realize she is playing Richard Pryor’s widow, Jennifer Lee, alongside Eddie Murphy in the Lee Daniels’ film Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said.

I’ve gained and lost around 80 lbs three times, twice for kids, once before kids. When you’re pregnant, your baby tells you what to do. My husband was weird and constantly telling me how wonderful I looked. Had to take his word for it, and that’s a shame. In retrospect, I’m astonished at what my body has done, to make more people. Handler is so out of touch with anything and everything.
She’s so annoying.
I look forward to the European CB response to this baby weight gain talk, my best friend gave birth in France and from her obgyn’s perspective, people over here do gain too much weight. Iirc, the doc told her “ten pounds of fluid, eight pounds of baby. The rest is fat you will have to lose once he/she’s born.”
I didn’t gain a ton during my pregnancies…but I was also sick as a dog. Not HG sick, just heartburn, garden variety pregnant junk.
Adele… I am American. I was underweight when I got preg and ended up gaining about 40 lbs. by the time I delivered. I was four months along and my dr was telling me to slow down on the weight gain. He was smart! I ate all the time because it was all I could do to not feel sick. But after I had my baby, I realized I had overdone the weight gain. I did gain a lot of fat. It was ok… But I get that it was really unnecessary to put my body through the extra weight gain, that I just had to lose when it was all over.
I’m British and had twins 4 years ago. I had a couple of American-written books on twin pregnancies, which insisted on gaining a lot of weight, I’m talking 60-80lb. I spoke to my own consultant about it and she was slightly horrified and told me I should just eat healthily, and a pregnant woman only needs a couple of hundred extra calories per day. I just ate normally throughout the pregnancy and gained about 24lb, which was the weight of the babies and the placentas. Perfectly healthy babies. There’s no need to put on any more, unless you are underweight to start with.
Size 2 dress is “huge”? Then I’m the Hindenburg.
I remember seeing pictures of her at the end of that pregnancy. She looked really bloated and uncomfortable. I think often women who have to stay in shape for their careers go a little overboard with the “eating for 2” thing and they gain a ton of weight. She has been saying “seventy pounds” for years so I believe her.
I remember, too. And while the Shallow Hal comment sounds like a dig, that is kind of what she looked like – like someone had taken a straw and blown her up. She didn’t look like a pregnant Kate Hudson, she was kind of swollen all over. Her second pregnancy, she looked amazing. So, live and learn, I guess.
I thought I remembered her saying she had to lose that 70 lbs in like, 3 months in order to start filming the Skeleton Key. But I could be wrong.
Her figure is insane!
It’s interesting how a lot of actresses have these life style brands.
Nurse here, some women gain a lot and some women don’t. When we will we stop with the one size fits all medical advice? Babies need mom to eat extra calories to grow eyes, ears, lungs. Kidneys, etc.
Some moms lose the baby weight fast, and others it takes about two years. It depends on how supportive your family is, how supportive your job is, if you can afford good daycare and insurance, how well your baby is doing, how much you sleep you get.
Having a kid is a lot of stress! And weight reflects that too.
Hudson gained the right amount for her, and I am sure she had nannies and chefs and all that stuff to lose it.
It wasnt the right amount for her though as she said her doctor told her to stop eating.
I don’t think gaining 70 lbs in a 9-month span is healthy for anyone – and I don’t think any baby is seriously telling its mother it needs THAT many extra calories. Let’s be real! And it’s OK to tell women to eat healthy during pregnancy, that’s not an insult!
I love the photo of her younger child hiding his face. He should give lessons to other celeb’s kids. Take that, paparazzi! 🙂
I gained 65 lbs during my pregnancy (my son was born on May 1st). I walked between 2 and 5 miles a day, and wasn’t really eating horribly. I was a high risk pregnancy, so I had to keep exercise to very low impact. I was working full time, and in grad school full time. My OB was on me about my weight gain (I’m also a registered nurse, so I fully understand the “guidelines”). I left the hospital with roughly 50lbs to lose.
I made it back to my pre-pregnancy weight, thanks to an awesome gym membership and a supportive hubby, and would never judge another woman (i.e. the commenter upthread who only gained 24lbs with twins and was quite high and mighty about it), for how much weight she gains during pregnancy, or how long it takes to lose. I had to work my butt off to get back into shape, and I had the perfect storm of resources and support to do it before I had to go back to work full time.
That is incredible that you are already back to pre preg weight, congratulations!
Thank you! I have a new appreciation for what goes in to starting a diet and fitness program essentially from scratch!
I actually really like her. I think for women who are very fit like Kate is, they’re sometimes even harder on themselves when they’re pregnant, but pregnancy is an adjustment for every woman. As another poster noted, I recall seeing photos of her while pregnant and she looked incredibly uncomfortable.
It always baffles me how many people make rude comments to pregnant women telling them how huge they are, asking if they’re having multiples. I really do believe most people don’t even realize how terrible and rude that is to say.
Her mom gained 70 lbs with her pregnancies too – probably just how their bodies work.
