Johnny Depp unironically believes he’s the victim of a gaslighting campaign

Johnny Depp's Hollywood Vampires Perform In Bucharest

As we discussed a few days ago, Johnny Depp’s ex-managers are countersuing him, claiming that he’s a dirty box of wine in a hobo scarf. Depp sued his managers several weeks ago, on the same day that his divorce from Amber Heard was finalized. Depp claimed that his management team – The Management Group/TMG – basically had their hand in the till and overpaid themselves millions of dollars of his money. In TMG’s countersuit, they said that they spent years trying to convince Depp to rein in his crazy spending, that he didn’t need to spend $30,000 a month on wine, nor did he need fourteen homes, nor did he need a bajillion cars and SUVs. Well, now Depp’s lawyer has issued a reaction to the countersuit. And I feel bad, but I totally laughed.

Johnny Depp is firing back at his former management team over their claims his financial woes are all his fault, according to a statement by Depp’s attorney, Adam Waldman. The Pirates of the Caribbean star claims his former business team, The Management Group (TMG), “have chosen to employ a reprehensible ‘blame the victim’ strategy in a transparent attempt to save their own skin and deflect away from their malfeasance, which is chronicled in Mr. Depp’s 48 page complaint.”

“Mr. Depp did not sue his former business managers for his own personal investment decisions or the ‘financial distress’ they wildly allege — Mr. Depp sued them for fraud and multiple breaches of their fiduciary duty, among other claims,” Waldman continues. “Gaslighting the public with global press releases will not save the defendants in court from their gross misconduct set forth in the complaint.”

Depp, 53, sued TMG earlier this month for $25 million in a fraud lawsuit. On Tuesday, TMG filed a cross-complaint, claiming the actor lived an “ultra-extravagant lifestyle that often knowingly cost Depp in excess of $2 million per month to maintain, which he simply could not afford.” In TMG’s lawsuit, obtained by PEOPLE, the management firm asks Depp to pay more than $560,000 in allegedly unpaid commissions and credit card fees. TMG’s lawsuit is also asking for a court declaration that it “complied with all of its fiduciary obligations under the law and that Depp is responsible for his own financial waste.”

In the court papers, his former managers claim they repeatedly warned Depp of his overspending, and even warned him to get a pre-nup before marrying Amber Heard, which ended up costing him a $7 million settlement. However, Depp’s lawyers claim in his lawsuit that the actor “lost tens of millions of dollars and has been forced to dispose of significant assets to pay for TMG’s self-dealing and gross misconduct.”

Depp’s lawsuit alleges TMG paid itself over $28 million in fees without his consent and failed to pay his taxes on time, resulting in $5.6 million in fees and penalties. The actor also claims the company loaned money to people without Depp’s permission. In a statement, TMG maintains that “Johnny Depp alone was solely responsible for his extravagant spending. Over 17 years, The Management Group (TMG) did everything possible to protect the actor from himself.”

Gaslighting??? BLAME THE VICTIM? My, my, how the worm turns. You would think that Poor, Innocent Scarfy had never gotten his bros to go on a PR campaign to paint Amber Heard as a manipulative bitch. You would think Victimized Johnny never used his bros in the media to disseminate damaging information about his estranged wife. You would think that Sad, Used Johnny had never behaved violently towards his wife and then used his staff to manipulate her into coming back, then use all of his power, connections and wealth to gaslight her for months. I mean, it’s perfectly possible that TMG did take advantage of Johnny. But am I the only one who really doesn’t care? He’s not a victim of anything but his own substance abuse and ego.

I used to dismiss Karma…but how can you when stuff like this happens?!

    • Jane says:

I’m sorry, but what the managers did is still inexcusable.

      • Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

If its even true – thou I think in this case the truth is someone in the middle. His spending has been well known over the years, he often bragged of his art/car/bike collections and none of his business ventures ever really paid off. He ended up selling his stake in the Viper Room at a loss, IIRC.

      • Izzy says:

They have yet to present any proof that TMG did embezzle. Meanwhile, TMG has a paper trail demonstrating that they tried to tell this drunken idiot to stop spending money like water. Until a full forensic accounting is done and proves they did steal, this looks to me like Depp needs cash and decided to blame his former management for the fact that he doesn’t have any, even though it’s his own fault.

      • Jane says:

        @Izzy

Would he be seeking a jury trial if he had no proof?

      • Talie says:

Jane — I mean more in the sense of him getting screwed in the media with these claims. The shoe is on the other foot.

      • Mia4S says:

“Would he be seeking a jury trial if he had no proof?”

@Jane, of course he would. He’s pressing for a settlement or, worst case scenario, hoping for some fans on the panel. It’s classic strategy. I’m 13 years into legal practice, I know the game. The managers have a paper trail, he doesn’t, that won’t be easy. The managers also have knowledge of his….habits. Look for this to go away quietly but he won’t get close to the amount he’s asking for.

      • NastyWoman says:

Of course he’d be seeking a jury trial even with no proof! Look at who we have for president. People are smitten with celebrity – no matter how undesirable their character or actions. If he did have solid proof, he would opt for a bench trial, which is decided solely on the evidence and not emotion.

      • Agapanthus says:

I’m sure rich people get ripped off all the time, but if you read the court filings they make a good case and Depp comes across very badly as a spolit, abusive and entitled brat. For eg, he agreed to sell his yacht, signed all the paperwork etc, then threw a tantrum about it. Who knows what the truth is but it was an interesting read.

      • HEAVE HO says:

        Winona had a jury trial.

    • Jess says:

Totally. He’s not getting full karma but I’ll take what I can get with him.

  2. JustME says:

He should just sell all of his scarves, they must cost a fortune.

  3. sarri says:

He is the new Nicolas Cage, he will make many movies now just to earn some money.

    • Belle Epoch says:

Would anyone hire him to make a movie? Other than rehashing his tiresome Pirates of the Caribbean persona – which he seems to have permanently adopted?

      • sarri says:

His next projects: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Murder on the Orient Express, LAbyrinth, Gnomeo & Juliet: Sherlock Gnomes

      • cathy says:

He’ll get plenty of work. Which sucks because he will not suffer at all for his behavior in his personal life. I wonder if his ex wife will suffer professionally. She was crucified by his PR team and made to look like the bad person. I wouldn’t be surprised if she doesn’t struggle to get any work going forward because I suspect he will try to get her blacklisted to continue to punish her for getting out.

      • sarri says:

@cathy: His fans already attacking her for her role in Aquaman.

      • Mia4S says:

His next few projects will be telling. The Pirates one of course (which excluded him from the teaser trailer 🤔), the Gnomeo thing is a voice only, Orient Express has about 57 people in the lead cast so I have a hunch that’s not a huge role. He won’t get credit if it’s a smash, but also won’t take the blame if it fails.

That LAbarynth movie is key. Low budget I would guess but all him. If it fails even then? Trouble!!!

The Fantastic Beasts series is interesting. The first one is absolutely a big hit but excitement seems… muted? Domestic box office was very good but not spectacular. I hope they got him for bargain prices because I don’t see that series becoming what they want it too.

      • sarri says:

@Mia4S: I think the movies (except Pirates) will flop.

    • TQB says:

You’ve really hit a new low when people start referring to you as “the new Nicholas Cage” and it makes people like me want to rush to Nic’s defense…

      • sarri says:

LOL .. I saw the Nicolas Cage reference a lot and it’s just the truth .. but I like Nic more than Johnny.

      • detritus says:

Right? Nic seems to me to just be a bit eccentric.
Any harm he does seems to be to himself and his pocket book, not others.

It does him a disservice to be compared to scarfy. Nic is much nicer.

      • Melly says:

I met Nicolas Cage one time in the airport lounge and he was the nicest guy! My friend and I took a bunch of silly pics with him and he was really cool about it. He even bought us a round of drinks! Mr. Cage might be bad with his money but he is super cool to his fans.

      • Wait&See says:

        @Melly:

He really seems to be cool guy, nice story.

      • Jeesie says:

Nic Cage has been arrested for DV and there have always been very strong rumours that he treats his wives and gfs horribly.

  4. Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

These photo’s just show the person inside and it ain’t pretty. I always thought he was a decent actor thou vastly over rated.

He’s such a Keith Richards wannabe – the whole scarfs, necklaces schtick was never originated by Depp, he’s ripping off Richards and badly. Richards has more talent even when high as a kite and falling out of trees than Depp ever had.

  5. Londerland says:

God, it’s so weird how fast Depp has gone from being admired almost to the point of being untouchable to being…well, a joke. A talent-wasting wife-abusing middle-age wannabe-rock-cliche punchline.

  6. ida says:

I feel nothing for Deep since the divorce debacle but “what goes around comes around”.

  7. OhDear says:

    Oh bless his heart.

  8. Izzy says:

Perhaps someone should explain to Scarfy McLitigators that filing a countersuit is not a “global press release.”

  9. Kristen820 says:

    Wow. Just…wow.

  10. wendy woo says:

Is it bad that I hope they took his money and I hope they get away with it? At least it would have been better spent.

    • Jane says:

Nobody should get away with stealing someone else’s money.

    • cathy says:

They shouldn’t get away with it but he should have been sober enough to track what was going on.

      • detritus says:

eh, I despise Depp, but I don’t think he deserves to be taken advantage of.
I think my main problem is I dislike the narrative that its OK to steal from an addict. Even a gross, shitty one.

Don’t get my wrong, couldn’t have happened to a nicer person, but I’d prefer it didn’t happen at all.

  11. Sixer says:

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

While the world burns, Scarfy McScarfface of the clan McScarfface holds the Global Press Release Olympics. I like a man who has his priorities straight.

  12. Marley says:

He’s not as bad as Trump.

  13. Ninks says:

In some of the pictures, it looks like someone is weekend-at-bernieing him.

  14. Margo S. says:

Dirty hobo johnny needs to go away. He’s such a damn mess.

  15. HK9 says:

Dude needs to stop using and get into rehab pronto.

  16. Millenial says:

“Safe spaces,” “Gaslighting,” etc… These are terms that have been used by the oppressed to explain their experiences, and now the oppressors are using them for their own agendas.It’s. So. Rage. Inducing.

    • Agapanthus says:

I couldn’t agree more. It’s offensive to me to use the word gaslighting in this context. And I don’t think they are using it correctly anyway. Talk about projection!

      • Tara says:

Frankly I hope he loses all his money, ends up bussing tables at IHOP and regains some perspective and humility. He might even regain some of the things that made him interesting in the first place.

    • Veronica says:

It’s actually a very common tactic of abusers – make themselves the victim.

  17. Tulip Garden says:

Sadly, Johnny Depp is one of Johnny Depp’s victims and he is the only one that can change that. His personal and professional implosion is fueled by his substance abuse. I know that he can never remove the stain that he has put on his persona but I do wish that he would get it together for his children’s sake and all others in his life.

  18. TQB says:

That header photo is The. Best.

  19. Ruth says:

I don’t think there’s anything funny about money stealing given the fact that they may have done it to others too (if it’s true). The way they revealed his financials to the public (they could have kept the docs private) strikes me as an attempt to distract the public from the actual problem. Almost all of the headlines where “JD spends 30k a month on wine” which has nothing to do with the initial lawsuit and the reason it was filed. Let’s learn to view some things alone, like it’s not right to link the 10 mil lawsuit against Amber to the divorce the same goes for here I think. If these people lost him 25 million then they should pay for it cause they may do it again to someone else. People like them are part of a bigger problem and they should be held accountable if the allegations are true.

    • QueenB says:

yeah I am not going to be happy about criminal finance people (are the ones who arent criminal?) getting money. We can despise everyone in this story equally.

    • Anon33 says:

This is the exact point though.

TMG has submitted evidence of what they claimed-hence, listing it in the story. Johnny hasn’t submitted evidence of ANYTHING. He’s simply throwing allegations around. Yet people are still concluding “oh poor Johnny.” It’s a head scratcher.

    • Pandy says:

I think TMG HAD to release those figures. They must represent a lot of other stars and they would be wondering if they were being ripped off ….
I can never understand spending THAT MUCH money on such nonsense. 18 homes. Who needs that?? It’s like watching lotto winners flush their money away on cars with custom built aquariums in them (true!!). You just know it’s going to end badly.
And he looks like HELL. Wow.

      • Felicia says:

I think that what most people don’t understand is that these are investments. You don’t leave a couple of hundred million dollars in the bank at a measly 2% interest rate.

  20. Pip says:

I subscribe to all the French property magazines (dreaming of running away!) – last year he listed his village in the South of France for sale for about $25 million (admittedly it’s very beautiful but I’d have thought has a fairly limited market). It didn’t sell so he withdrew it from market. It’s just been listed again for over $50million! Some weird logic going on there, especially since the French property market is rapidly going tits up for various political & economic reasons & property is hanging around unsold for years.

    • Felicia says:

My guess on that would be that it’s because the tax treatment on real estate capital gains for non-reaidents has changed. It used to be that as a non-resident, you paid 19.5 % tax on your capital gains, minus a digression for the number of years you’ve held the property. Residents paid 34.5%, the difference being in social charges. The current govt decided to make non-residents also pay the social charges and were taken to court over it and lost because if you don’t benefit from french health care etc, you shouldn’t have to pay for it. Following that, (about 8 months or so ago) they “repurposed” the difference as being not for social charges so it’s back up to 34.5% for non-residents.

Plus, he originally put that on the market in 2012 and it may have been declared as his principal residence back then, in which case all of the capital gains would have been non-taxable.

  21. Ana says:

Johnny Depp is a real trainwreck. In August of 2015, I was in the D23 in Anaheim where he was the surprise guest to the Disney Legends ceremony, and he was welcomed as a new Disney Legend. He gave a speech, and was completely drunk and probably high, he slurred his words SO MUCH. Mind you it was 10 am, in an event full of little kids. I don’t really know all the details in this conflict he’s having with his ex managers, but I’m pretty sure he’s been making very bad decisions for a while.

  22. Nymeria says:

I read TMG’s full complaint. It really does sound like Depp is trying to dick them around.

  23. Elizabeth says:

i cant he Is such a douche!

  24. Korinne says:

I stand behind Johnny Depp. I’m from his generation and actually the best actors are from my generation (Johnny Depp, Robert Downey, Keanu Reeves, just to name a few). Living the life as a celebrity is expensive and also living as a non celebrity is expensive too. From my personal experience I know that I’ve overspent and made poor decisions at times but we all learn from our mistakes and try and move on. If I had a management team though I would have expectations of them to write out my checks, pay my bills and make sure that my business was running smoothly. Your business team is supposed to be your right hand. I don’t know all the facts so I don’t know what his team was doing. It’s not my business to know either but I do hope that things work out for him.

    • Kath says:

I’m from Johnny Depp’s generation too, and think he’s an abusive dickhead who has spent decades honing his cool-indie-artiste shtick while raking in the cash; adopting ludicrous faux-Irish-Shane-Macgowan-Liverpudlian-Keith-Richards accents; and being a massive sellout making shite movies to fund his bazillion homes.

  25. sauvage says:

Abusers projecting publicly seems to be the new black. I’m a psychologically and physically abusive drug addict who refuses to take responsibility for anything! And now I’m being called out on it, I mean being GASLIGHTED! WOE ME!

    Cry me a river.

I’ ve seen this tactic before, up close. Classic abuser behaviour: hurt somebody really badly, be called out on it, and immediately shift into victim mode and how hurt you are by being called out. Sorry, Mr. Depp, none of this is even original. You still suck.

  26. Jane says:

TMG seems to be trying to use the tactic of postponing the trial, then asking for a new judge.

“02/01/2017 CCP 170.6 Application Filed (AGAINST JUDGE: SUSAN BRYANT-DEASON The Mandel Company, Inc)
Filed by Atty for Defendant and Cross-Compl”
