Brooklyn Beckham didn’t know his parents were famous until he was 13

Kendall Jenner On A Night Out In London

Brooklyn Beckham covers the Spring issue of Wonderland Magazine. What do you think of this cover? It reminds me of the magazine covers from the early ‘90s, and I feel like that’s a conscious reference that the magazine is making. We’re pretty much supposed to believe that Brooklyn Beckham is a pin-up heartthrob. I’m sure some tweens and teens are buying it, but I’m not? I don’t know why. Usually I feel okay about indulging in some mild creeping on the boys in their late teens (he’s 17), but Brooklyn just seems so… blah. That general ambivalence may be in reaction to how hard this kid is being pushed too. As for the interview, only a few quotes have been released:

When he learned his parents are famous: “I didn’t actually know that they were big until I was about 13.” Almost five years later he explains, “I went to a football game and people were shouting my dad’s name and I was like, ‘What?! Oh my God.’ I don’t look at them like that.”

He’s an aspiring photographer: “It’s pretty exciting to put my work out there and show people that I’m not just doing it because of my parents are.”

[From Wonderland]

First of all, bulls–t that he didn’t know his parents were famous until he was 13. David and Posh never hid their lifestyle and their careers from their kids, and their children were being pap’d since they were babies. Brooklyn went to his dad’s games from a very young age too. So why lie about it? I have no idea. I think the Beckham kids are actually pretty great examples of how well-adjusted “celebrity kids” can be in the limelight.

As for Brooklyn’s aspiring photography career… the kid has already shot a Burberry campaign and he’s releasing a book of photography this year. THIS is nepotism. I see a lot of people cry “nepotism!” when an Obama daughter gets an internship, but really? So many internships – paid or unpaid – are about who you know and what connections your parents have. If Brooklyn had an internship with Mario Testino, I would roll my eyes but I would understand how it happened. What I don’t understand is giving the kid a book deal and a job to photograph an ad campaign just because of who his parents are. (I also don’t understand why he’s on this mag cover, but just add that to the pile.)

I know we are supposed to dislike and mock the Beckhams, but I think they are wonderful parents, who clearly adore their children (and vice versa), and have raised them to be respectful and kind humans.

That’s saying something, given some other celeb couples and their offspring (side eye Osbournes)

    • Digital Unicorn (aka Betti) says:

Hmmm, I dunno – given the recent email scandal with David you can see where the kids get their sense of entitlement from, their father. Lets face it, Brooklyn does have a bit of an entitlement complex just because of who his parents are – he got his ‘modelling’ contracts because of them. He’d never had got it on his own.

But saying that they are harmless enough, even thou they come across as a bit clueless.

    • Tanguerita says:

i don’t think we are SUPPOSED to dislike Beckhams. I actually used to like them till they started pimping out their ofspring like they are hurting for money or attention. One is a photographer, another one models, the third one is a “talented” singer…mark my words, in two years we will have a kid’s collection designed by Harper.

    • Tris says:

I agree, Clare. I have never seen such affectionate and careful parents in celebrity culture. They are always touching and kissing their kids. It’s sweet. Too bad the kids are as douchey as all rich kids. But, I hope, relatively harmless.

    • OhDear says:

Didn’t someone post something about how well behaved and polite all the Beckham kids are a while back?

  2. justsaying says:

Re the pin-up heartthrob – pretty sure 10-year-old girls find him cute. ^^

    • Sabrine says:

I see nothing wrong with the kid’s ambitions. He’s not going to work a regular 9-5 with the parents he has. If he makes a success at what he’s doing, that’s his deal and nobody else’s. Good for him.

  3. Sixer says:

He’s just the ultimate in commodification of self. Plastic, empty, pointless. I sometimes feel we live in a barren old world.

Half of me thinks oh, just go away, you awful thing. The other half thinks poor kid.

  4. Alix says:

A nice-looking boy, but model material? In his dreams.

  5. Adriana says:

They photoshopped him to hell and back – he’s barely recognizable. Why do they have to do that?
And what did he do to be on that cover? The UK is the worst for nepotism. Despite most being average, all the celebs’ kids are models now. While the models from modest background go through the humiliation and rejection of multiple castings, Brooklyn, Jude Law’s daughter, Sofia Richie, Hadids, Kendall, Daniel Day Lewis’ son, Pamela Anderson’s sons, etc. (the list is endless), just need their mom or dad to give a phone call.
Unfortunately society is fascinated by celebs’ kids, which is why brands and magazines court them. And celebs use modeling to get their kids to become famous.

    • LAK says:

The current crop of celeb off-spring models really abuses the concept of nepotism because for the most part they aren’t good looking, quirky, memorable in any way. They might vaguely resemble their celebrity parents, but not in such a way as to make them or their parents memorable.

The only exceptions are DDL’s son Gabriel and Cindy Crawford’s son. Those two boys deserve every contract coming their way even if nepotism is involved because they are truly memorable, have the cheekbones and if possible are better looking than their own parents.

Whilst i think Cindy’s daughter is cutely pretty, i don’t find her as striking as her brother. I ump her in the pretty cute, but not especially memorable category that also includes Rachel Bilson and Leighton Meister.

I keep thinking Jude Law’s kids are just trolling us. The daughter, Iris, has potential, but her photos are so stylised and photoshopped that it’s hard to make a judgement.

As for Brooklyn Beckham……so entitled to think his looks are striking enough for modelling when all you need to do is sit him next to DDL’s son to see how wrong he is….

      • Redgrl says:

@LAK – wow! That side by side photo is shocking! DDL’s son has presence and is very good looking. BB is blah as all get out. He also looks a bit like Michael Jackson’s rather unfortunate looking eldest son..

      • Fleur says:

DDL’s son is also shockingly beautiful, but I guess that would be expected of any child of Daniel Day Lewis AND Isabelle Adjani, one of the most incredible looking women in the world.

Genes are unpredictable though. Honestly, it would be hard to be the child of someone renowned for their beauty. My mother was extremely beautiful. I, as a child and teen, was not attractive. Not at all. This is not self-effacing. I was simply not a pretty teenager. My mother never made me feel like I was anything less than perfect just as I was. But I still remember being a teenager, looking at old photos of my mother in her teens and crying because I would never look like her. Older relatives even made passive-aggressive comments that implied I wasn’t “beautiful” like my mother was. Well, I bloomed late, and in my 20s I finally learned what it felt like to get whistled at by men, and considered “beautiful” by the outside world. World’s smallest violin, boo hoo, I know. But it definitely left me with self esteem issues. So what I’m saying is, A. it’s not easy being the daughter of an incredibly beautiful woman if you are not equally as beautiful, and B. I don’t know why anyone would encourage their kid to go into an industry where your intrinsic value is your image.

  6. my3cents says:

So ordinary looking, and as time passes I’m more inclined to believe that they aren’t that great of parents the way they keep pushing each kid into the limelight.

  7. Colleen says:

    That last picture though… 😂😂😂
Are supposed to believe he does his own laundry? And that sweater… I don’t know if it’s awesome or not, but it sure is something.

    • Cannibell says:

I just looked at it again and imagined it as an Old Master oil painting, and y’know – by that measure it works for me! (You know, the “formal portrait” rich families had done Back in the Day.)

    • sarri says:

I hate to admit it but I kinda like the sweater LOL

    • Elisa the I. says:

He looks like Jennifer Love Hewitt circa Ghost Whisperer in that pic. I laughed, that’s already sth I guess? 🙂

  8. Loopy says:

I am actually shocked, I never thought that the Beckhams would end up pimping their kids, its like they picked from a hat ‘ok you will be the photographer, you will be the model, you will be the singer’…I read that VB’s business is in financial ruins and is running at a loss maybe this is Plan B..i wonder what Harper will be maybe a child actress.

  9. paolanqar says:

The smugness on his face offends me deeply.
Once again a celebrity kid will take place in the spotlight doing what exactly?
These kids are so lucky and yet so stupid. They could get in the best schools, travel the world and see amazing places, become their own person and do fantastic things but no, they’ll frown in front of a camera and they’ll be claiming their right to fane for being the ‘son/daughter of’…
Talk about wasting your chances and resources.
Also, at 13 you’re well aware of what happens in the world especially thorough internet and social media and his parents were in the spotlight a lot.
Didn’t Brooklyn appear on a football pitch many times after a game in which his dad was playing? I’m sure I’ve seen him more than once at different ages. And I saw him on the red carpet with his mum too more than once 4 or 5 years ago. So much bs.

  10. ElleBee says:

    He bores me. NEXT!

  11. Chrissy says:

i wish his parents would stop trying to make this kid happen. He seems like a normal kid but with too much money and grasping, rich parents. It doesn’t mean he’s talented or special in any way. He’d be better off getting a good education and living an anonymous life. If only his parents would let him.

    • Redgrl says:

@chrissy – exactly! Just shows how untrue his “I didn’t know my parents were famous” schtick is – because if he didn’t he would be thinking about going to school and having a more typical life instead of this faux-modesty nepotism bull.

  12. Amide says:

He is NOT attractive in anyway.😶 He looks like Victoria’s brother.

  13. Beth says:

He’s kind of plain looking. Not an eye catcher. Nothing to pin-up. I wouldn’t notice him if he was walking by me at the store

  14. Cs says:

I was trying to ‘get’the photoshoot, when the last one twigged me onto the fact that he’s supposed to be THAT university heartthrob. The kind you meet while doing laundry at 3am (or more likely, only in your dreams). Gotta say, this is more cringey than hot for me – but I’ve been out of university for over a year and a half now, so I don’t think I’m quite the target demographic anymore.

  15. littlemissnaughty says:

Oh bless him, it’s gonna be like that, huh? Fine. But child, we’ve been around. Stop it. We were around when your parents had GOLDEN THRONES at their wedding. They seem like lovely people, truly. But low-key they are not. You probably knew in the womb.

I’m not sure why we need this second generation fame in our lives. All these kids from famous parents bore me to death. None of them would be where they are on their own.

  16. JustBitchy says:

His nose job look,s great. So glad he didn’t wait the vV did.

  17. OhDear says:

Oh please re: his not knowing his parents were famous until he was 13. Like a non-famous parent would bring him on the field at Old Trafford (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r79yyUQz-x8)

  18. Lua says:

Everyone on here is so mean! He’s a 17 year old boy with ambition. Would we tear down a 17 year old girl in the same situatuon?! Be nice! If you have connections, use them. That goes for offspring of celebrities, presidents, anyone. It’s better than sailing on a yacht, coked out, with a fake accent *ahem*lindsey*ahem*
Ps. This reminds me of Bopper Magazine, and 13 year old me would totally sticky tack him on my wall 😛

    • Turtle says:

I kind of agree. If he weren’t partying, but just lying around playing video games and skateboarding like a normal teenager, people would be bashing him. Yeah, he didn’t earn his first couple of breaks like a non-celebrity photographer, but his famous parents can only get him so many jobs before he has to carry his own weight.

    • loveotterly says:

Well that’s the thing about nepotism (is that word even appropriate here in this context? I dunno). People get really bitter that they work for decades to achieve things that these kids get overnight because of who their parents are. This is why the older generation of models is pissy about the new instagram models. They lived in bunk beds 8 to a room and lived on ramen noodles walking door to door and doing lord knows what to catch their break…. then we have Gigi (who is stunning but put in nowhere near the work that others have). So yeah, people are jealous and bitter, understandably. Unless these kids go into some kind of humanitarian work or become doctors or lawyers on academic scholarships there really isn’t much they can do without a public eye-roll.

    • brooksie says:

      +1

  19. loveotterly says:

I don’t think he is lying about it. He probably knew what they did for a living but kids are weird and very self-centered, I think he meant he didn’t get the scope of it all until he was around 13.

  20. Jenna says:

He’s looks like a brunette Garret Hedland! I predict he will be incredibly handsome when he hits adulthood.

  21. jerkface says:

So he didn’t have the internet till he was 13? okaaaaaay
I doubt he was homeschooled. Get off my lawn.

  22. Harryg says:

    Ah, haha.

  23. Meggin says:

He looks so much like his mom! That’s all I have lol

  24. Jeesie says:

So he’s basically admitting he’s stupid?

The kid was taken out in the field at his father’s games, photographed by paps, and most notably, went to school in the UK at the peak of his parents notoriety. Even if he was too much in a bubble to google his parents names, do you think his peers were too?

Anyway, he’s just following on his mothers footsteps here. Why would you think about studying your vocation or learning from others when you’ve already seen your mother successfully buy her way in without taking so much as a bare bones 1yr design course.
