Ugh, the two biggest fashion events of the year are the Academy Awards and the Met Gala. I enjoy covering both events, but honestly… in the past few years, the Met Gala is a bigger deal for fashion and gossip. When the Oscars are done, we have maybe a week of post-gaming and then I have two months to recover. Then it’s time for the Met Gala and every year, it feels like the gala gets more and more extravagant. Last year’s Met Gala brought us TIDDLES, for the love the God. The year before, it was Kimye, Amal Clooney and Beyonce. And the year before that, we had Beyonce, Jay-Z, Solange and the elevator. It’s gotten to the point where we’re still writing about all of the sh-t that goes down at the Met Gala months later.
So what will be writing about this year? I don’t even want to consider it before the Oscars, but here we go. We already know that Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams are co-hosting this year’s gala. But as it turns out, Anna Wintour was looking for some other big-name co-chairs. And she just got them: Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen. Nice victory lap, Egor.
Just when Tom Brady thought he achieved his biggest accomplishment of 2017 (you know, winning the Super Bowl), he just landed another huge honor. It was announced that Brady and his supermodel wife Gisele Bündchen will serve as co-chairs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual Met Gala on May 1.
Back in October we learned that Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams will co-host alongside Vogue’s Anna Wintour at this year’s celebration honoring Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo’s work. The focus of the exhibition will examine the “Art of the In-Between” and show how her work challenged norms on beauty, taste and fashion. Also new to the lineup, the former Ambassador to Japan, Caroline Kennedy, who will join the Toyko-born designer as an honorary chair.
Gisele and Tom have been to the Met Gala loads of times, but I was looking through the photo archives, and I realized that they haven’t attended since 2014. My guess is that they were going through some issues (marital issues, Deflategate) and didn’t want to partake in their special brand of performative intimacy. But they’ve been doing better this year, so why not?
As for this group – Gisele, Tom, Katy, Pharrell and Caroline Kennedy – er, did it not occur to Wintour to maybe get a Japanese person or Japanese-American to co-chair as well? This might be a moment to think outside the box and ask Yoko Ono to co-chair the event. As for the theme… I suspect people will just grab some vintage Comme des Garcons and wear that, OR they’ll hear “Japanese” and just do that. Then again, I was pleasantly surprised by how NOT racist the China: Through the Looking Glass gala went two years ago, so maybe we should give the fashion people more credit. I hope we don’t see a lot of vintage Comme des Garcons because there are only so many sack dresses I can take at one event.

Yawn. Excited about what Pharrell will wear, but what an uninspired list of co-chairs. I guess TB and Gisele are still doing their victory lap. Well, I still have the picture of Ben Affleck’s nanny posing with TB’s rings to feel better!
Making Cheetolini’s bestie co-chair seems like a bad idea when you need a bunch of stars who supported Hillary to show up.
Well, but Gisele took that pic. (I wonder if you still feel better.)
By the way: they haven’t attended since 2014 because she was working (Chanel).
Megan: It’s not a bad idea. He is not a Trump supporter.
Ugh as if the country needs to suck up more to Tom Brady. #majordouchealert
Yoko Ono. YESSSSS!!!
I think Yoko is toooo coool if confronted to these people. But YES.
I look forward to the Met Gala. The reviews of the outfits are always a lot of fun to read. I wonder if Beyoncé/JayZ or Kimye will attend?
Blah. Tom just wears the most basic, bog standard suits and tuxes, and while Gisele is a great model, in her own time her style is really bland and pretty much just reliant on her stunning figure. Such vanilla choices, which might be fine some years, but not for an event honouring Comme des Garcons.
Not happy about Katy Perry, with her geisha dress-up past. Not sure how Caroline Kennedy fits with this theme either, maybe if it was honouring someone boring like Ralph Lauren.
The hosts are usually not a perfect fit or a bit of a stretch for the theme, but they do normally make more sense than this crowd.
Carole Kennedy was the US Ambassador to Japan during the last years, so maybe there is a bit of a connection…..
And she has a long history of supporting the Met too.
And I’ve met Caroline a number of times. She’s a lot of fun.
Not really. Her fashion is white bread American, and her Ambassadorship was a joke. She went out of her way to not get involved with Japanese culture, so choosing her for this is borderline offensive.
The ultimate bland, boring, white bread couple. Wonder if Gisele will be looking down her nose at the other peasants attending, as she dispenses her cringeworthy mothering and fitness tips?
I hope Gisele doesn’t have any input on the menu or there won’t be anything to eat.
I was just going to post this!
all of these people’s style is boring. why???
Pharrell usually brings it. I’m only here for him.
Has the Met ever done anything African inspired, the prints are gorgeous.
I don’t think so to be honest.
That being said I’m fine with that seeing as how the attendees barely get the theme right, if not outright ignore it, for the chance to wear something gaudy with the simpler dress codes already. I can just picture an “African” theme (and which part, it’s a diverse continent with hundreds of different traditional styles that vary quite widely) being a hot mess of animal and tribal print with the crowd who usually comes (they all want to be seen, but don’t have the talent/brains/nuance to create or pull off a thoughtful look). Hairstyles would probably veer into cultural appropriation too real quick. Not to mention it would be really rich seeing people fall all over themselves to dress up for this theme, but stay silent on the (frequent) calls for more diversity in the industry.
This was a sorta long-winded ranty way of saying no the Met hasn’t looked to Africa for a theme, but honestly I’m glad they haven’t sorry lol
I think they’re running out of themes.
Make America Great Again?
Damn, I don’t want to laugh!
Does that mean they all come in red Make America Great Hats? Lady Gaga can make a dress out of the red make america great baseball hats. I see it now.
Shouldn’t Tom be too busy to go because a black man is co-hosting?
Most of the Pats and NFL is black. He still plays. He missed that time going to see Obama because he had to work with his lawyer. NOT because the president was black
Sure Jan.
Don’t forget about the all important visit to the apple store to buy a watch
HA!!!!!! Right…
Ugh. Can we talk about the Wintour for a second? Because I know she was the one who made the Vogue into what it is today. Made it relevant in the era of pop culture and was the one to clearly see how celebrities are driving fashion and style. But latelly it seems like she lost the edge and can’ t seem to geasp the next big cultural trend. She keeps exploiting the big names pf the moment not capable to see though all that noise – the Kardashians, the latest football team win, etc. Her urge to put the fist lady on the cover is the same thing. It is driven by the idea that the fist lady somehow represents the political elite and the power of women but that simply is not the case this time. The failure to see that is one of the signs she did loose her edge or sense for the real cultural trend.
I totally agree, she has completely lost her edge.
Was there ever an “edge” tough?
She never had an edge. Vogue’s French, Italian and Japanese versions have often been brilliant, but US Vogue has always just been one big catalogue for ready to wear collections and mid-range designers. They rarely feature true couture unless there’s a ready to wear version that will be available at Neiman Marcus, and their editorials are deeply dull because they don’t want to scare off their conservative advertisers.
Wintour’s rep is about her ability to get designers stocked and selling in American department stores. Outside of America she’s not even really seen as a fashion person, she’s on the business side.
What does “chair” mean in this context I wonder? Certainly they’re not planning this event.
@LA in this instance “chair” is used as a way to illustrate Tom’s intelligence off the field.
Lol
The designer, Rei Kawakubo – who the story says was born in Tokyo – is one of the honorary co-chairs (along with Caroline Kennedy). It’s in the excerpt.
She is INSUFFERABLE!
please, a Met Gala full of Comme des Garçons would actually be way more exciting than the tepid crap most people did on the red carpet the last couple of years.
You had me at “performative intimacy.”
I just can’t with these two!
I can’t with them either- and every time I think of them, it’s usually the same pose- looking smug while he puts his hand on her rear end.
Haha! Yes, kudos to Kaiser on the word choice, there.
YAY! I cannot wait for this one. I love Giselle and Tom, and they always look incredible at the Met Gala. My favorite showing of theirs was the one that is on the Vogue coffee table book title People, Places and Parties. They were gorgeous. https://www.amazon.com/World-Vogue-People-Parties-Places/dp/0307271870
I wonder if the rumors are true that she is pregnant or is trying to get pregnant…would be so fabulous if she debuted her baby bump at the Gala! They are great together and so devoted to family.
I love following both of them on Instagram and admire their dedication to their careers, working out, and diet. It is great motivation. And Tom’s Super Bowl victory is an inspiration to young people everywhere — it’s my motto, never give up, work hard and picture yourself succeeding! So many other quarterbacks (eh eh …Cam Newton and I am from Charlotte NC, so I love him) would have given up. But not Tom. It was probably the single greatest football game that I have ever seen! And I loved watching the miked up version on the NFL network. It picked up how the Pats team talked to each other, encouraging each other, “let’s make this a championship play guys”! I just cannot get over how much that game inspired me in everyday life. Even when you are getting beaten down, keep your chin up and keep going! Go Pats!
Cartridge never stops growing .. Noses and ears never stop growing…noses…..
I just threw up in my mouth a little bit when I read that Tom and Gisele were hosting.
I love you guys but we don’t agree on TB. He just won the most amazing game in SB history instead of losing a 25 point lead they went into overtime with a tie and won. And he is old. He has a strange diet to keep his body able to continue playing that you guys knock him for. I make fun of these two and call the ‘The Perfect Ones’ but I can’t hate or dislike them. He played golf with Trump and supports him they are not BFFS. Anyway we all have our pets favorites but he is one of mine.
The Meh Gala is a great event to tie up 5th ave so that traffic will be jammed up to beyond passable levels when combined with he Trump Tower security fiasco. Greaaaaaaaaaaat lol
Can someone explain to me why Gisele was considered the last supermodel and was said to bring curves back into fashion?
As some people would say, those were the old version of fake news…
Because she’s the youngest model most non-fashion people can name/recognise without the help of social media
and unlike the social media models, images of her early career are still being used on moodboards for collections even now.
How could you expect anything that reflects actual Japanese culture from these ppl when Wintour puts Karlie Kloss in a geisha costume (and wildly offensive makeup) and calls it diversity?
