There’s basically a niche industry within celebrity journalism at this point. That niche? When celebrities describe every single part of their grooming and beauty habits. And honestly, I love this niche. Considering I’m not much of a makeup person, I could take or leave the makeup discussions, but I’m always interested in information about haircare, skincare, bathing, hair removal and more. Well, Emma Watson sat down with In the Gloss and this is like the motherlode of everything you ever wanted to know about Emma’s grooming. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:
Her freckles: “The object for me when applying makeup is you should be able to see as much skin as possible. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve embraced my freckles much more and I want to be able to see them. When we were filming Beauty and the Beast, I insisted on keeping my freckles as a part of the movie. There are so many young girls who are going through puberty who really hate having them, so I felt the need to say that I have them and that I think the look of natural skin is beautiful. I didn’t want to get blanked out!
She never forgets her evening skincare: “No matter what, I always wash my face at night. I could get back from a shoot at 4 AM and still cleanse, tone, and moisturize before going to bed. People are amazed by this, but it’s just one of those self-care practices that I really enjoy. I think it’s because, when I was going through puberty—particularly around ages 14 and 15—I had really bad skin. So when you get in a good place with you skin, you really appreciate it and try to take care of it.”
She’s not into face masks: “If my skin is feeling a bit sun-damaged or congested, I like their 9 Oil Cleansing Tonic, but I’ve never been big on masks! I guess I don’t totally buy into it… I do exfoliate with the Évolué Resurfacing Grains once a week because I think exfoliating is important. But masks? Meh. Maybe I’ll do one when I’m getting ready for an event or something like that, but only because it feels like it’s something special and luxurious as opposed to because it actually does something.
She loves baths: “I have a bath every single day of my life. And if I can have two or three—amazing. Nothing terrible is going to happen in the bath, so I always find time for that. I’ll take phone conversations in the bath, anything. Sometimes I’ll use Epsom salts and oils, but my favorite is the C.O Bigelow Apothecary Cold and Flu Soak. Oh my God, it’s amazing! It has like eucalyptus and peppermint and bark and Echinacea and ginger… If you’re sick, it’s the ultimate. It clears out my sinuses and makes me feel really clean. Another brand I use a lot of is called Lola’s Apothecary. They do this incredible milk bath with rose petals that’s inspired by Cleopatra. Amazing. Then there’s a brand called French Girl Organics that has this great Sea Polish which exfoliates and leaves you moisturized afterwards. I like that because it eliminates a step after the bath.
She uses natural deodorants: “It took me a while, but I finally found some good natural deodorant. It’s not an easy search! The best one I’ve found is Agent Nateur—I use the No. 3. I also love the Weleda Sage Deodorant for the smell. Soapwalla’s Deodorant Cream works too, but you have to scoop it out with your hands, so I always end up getting it on my clothes. But that one really works. If you need a 100% natural deodorant that you can rely on, it really does the job. You might just get it all over yourself.
She bleaches her ‘stache: “It’s funny—I was just talking to my friend before this about how in the Instagram era it’s so easy to edit your life so that it looks perfect. But I bleach my top lip and tweeze my eyebrows and you’d never get to see that, even though it’s a part of my routine. There’s still so much shame around the things you do to get ready while you’ve got a towel wrapped around your head. It’s important to me not to edit that out. I’ve been bleaching my top lip since I was nine. I don’t do it very often, but I do it!
She loves a pedicure: “Weirdly, I often don’t wear nail polish on my hands in my day-to-day life. It doesn’t seem like a useful way to spend my time when it will be destroyed within minutes. But I love, love, love having my toenails crazy colors. I use the brand Kure Bazaar, which is one of the first brands that excludes things like toluene, formaldehyde, synthetic camphor, but it does actually provide trend colors so it’s pretty cool. And I also use a brand called Floss Gloss. They have the prettiest blue color called El Capitan, which is probably my go-to shade.
I’m like her on the nail thing. I keep my fingernails unpolished because – and this sounds like I’m bragging – with my skin color, I always look like I naturally have French tips. It’s the weirdest thing. I have crazy-strong nails and they naturally look like I spent a lot of money getting tips, but no. But I also like to paint my toenails and the brighter the color, the better. I heard someone say that’s a sign of someone who is privately vain, when you don’t put polish on your fingernails but you do it on your toenails.
What else? I love that she talks about bleaching her ‘stache, but if she can go months without bleaching, then her ‘stache probably isn’t that bad. Same with natural deodorants – if they work for you, God bless, but you probably don’t sweat that much or smell that bad in the first place. As for taking baths two or three times a day… how does she find the time?

I actually am not a fan of this niche. I feel like Emma Watson — though I am a fan of her activism — and most other celebrities start at a baseline level of attractive such that their routines aren’t really relevant to people like me.
I’ve just given up. I’ve spent thousands in creams, toners, potions, lasers, peels, diets, and all that with absolutely zero change to my skin. I’ve stumped 2 dermatologists.
i love organic and natural bath skincare niche.
i prefer her in it than in the pseudo activist one.
it looks like she has taken her bath habit from her (former?) fabolous über chic stylist caroline sieber( her instagram is impressive with wealthly educated fashionable good taste ) one of the best ex chanel ambassador and a kaiser karl favorite.
it’s a rich and no very ecological treat : taking at least one morning bath instead of showering.
“and most other celebrities start at a baseline level of attractive such that their routines aren’t really relevant to people like me.” Make it “us” instead of “me” and Im not just including myself. I just read on the Dailymail site an article how Kate Mara and Lilly Collins: “Both actresses appeared in Glamour magazine’s April 2017 beauty issue in a column called America, The Beautiful, which celebrates game changes who are rewriting the standards of beauty”
Yeah right because two women with pretty much perfect faces are rewriting standards of beauty…
I think it’s meant to be fun, like a sneak peak into celebrities’ beauty regimens. For example, I’d love to know how Lupita Nyong’o gets her skin to be so luminous. At the same time – judging from EW’s routine – it shows that it takes a lot of work to keep up one’s appearance like that (no shade to EW meant).
But yeah, I completely understand the negatives to the trend, particularly the underlying societal focus on women’s appearance. (I’m assuming no or very few men have been profiled – someone correct me if I’m wrong?)
Is this interview an ad for the products she mentions ?
It is for IntotheGloss.com, a beauty/skin care site with interviews and tips. They are the ones behind the buzzy Glossier cosmetics.
I like the site. It’s run by Emily Weiss (aka Super Emily for “The Hills” fans).
ITG used to be better before they launched Glossier and half the Top Shelves started sounding like Glossier shills. Emma’s is one of the very few these days to actually
a) mention NO Glossier products
b) actually have things like tampons and moustache bleach visible in photographs.
I like this gal! I like that she’s open, and I like that she gave the names of her products. I myself adore pampering baths!
“As for taking baths two or three times a day… how does she find the time? ” This and also for someone so much into sustainability…
I was wondering all of that, too.
I’m the complete opposite, actually. I occassionally paint my finger nails, but my toes? Never ever. I just don’t like how it looks.
I am a Fan of the Niche, I want the nitty gritty and details on how they REALLY looks how they look, as I am a former acne flare outs girl so i’m very very into skincare, this past year I became a Serums Gospel testimony and then added Micellar water to the makeup removing pads Now im About to do a more Korean approach to my skincare https://twitter.com/quciferskittles/status/839443712727990272 and https://www.buzzfeed.com/cissyworstell/women-try-korean-skincare-for-a-week for ref. and add sheet masks, cleansing oil round more sunblock and the like (Im all serum crazy with The Original, and I’ve seen the change in my skin so I’m always game for a new thing to pamper myself)
I love this stuff.
You recommended deciem I think, and I’ve been addicted since my first order.
I do a simplified Korean routine, and my skin has stopped breaking out, and my retinols are no longer making me look like deadpool. I even cutout my oral antibiotics.
Double cleanse (cerave or oil, then a toner), CAIS, a vit C, and another serum with hyalouronic acids. Tons of spf in everything, including my bb cream. Next I’m trying the pixi glow tonic, and cosrx AHA.
The Originals are my saving grace. Then I can spend all my extra money on Niod’s CAIS and don’t feel guilty.
I haven’t dabbled much in peels though, or sheet masks. I’m pissing around with a bunch of different serums now, and once I set that I may look into a deeper peel.
I’d love to paint my toenails, but they’re a bit jacked up and I can’t bring myself to get a pedicure (wage and other employment issues in area nail salons, class …weirdness (for lack of a better word) of having a low-wage employee literally washing and treating your feet)
I don’t do nail salons ever. They are extremely unsanitary.
Well, I share her love of taking a bath, though I usually take a bath twice a day only when I’m really stressed out or exhausted. In that case, I use lavender essential oil and aromatic bath salts, so it also helps me overcome insomnia. As Sylvia Plath wrote: «There must be quite a few things that a hot bath won’t cure, but I don’t know many of them. Whenever I’m sad I’m going to die, or so nervous I can’t sleep, or in love with somebody I won’t be seeing for a week, I slump down just so far and then I say: “I’ll go take a hot bath”.» I think it’s a good way to relax and be alone for a while. Also, I like to read books in the bath.
I love taking hot bubble baths at least twice a week. I think, read, talk on the phone, and relax. It does help me able to fall asleep. Was stressed last night so I took a nice, hot bath
She is such a beauty! I think her and Prince Harry would make a nice couple! Shes so classy and seems invested in charitable endevours and giving back. I like her.
ha, I see her makeup artist has discovered my pet eye makeup trick – the ‘outline only’ cateye.
(when you have dark, downturned eyes like me, it’s the only way to make winged liner work without the line looking like it’s going to visually drag your eye further downwards)
And pube oil. Let us not forget the pube oil. 🙄
Kaiser, I am not a shill for Soapwalla, but it is the one natural deodorant that I have used that absolutely works as well as regular ones. I’ve been using it since 2011 (and I never get it all over myself or my clothes).
Beauty products are my least favorite thing to think or read about. Its like watching food shows for me. Let me sample or smell it or get out.
