Victoria Beckham’s Target line is selling on eBay at huge markups

I was giddy with excitement when Spice Girl-turned-fashion maven Victoria Beckham announced her new capsule collection for Target. I know from past experience that these specialty lines don’t usually last long in stores (see Lilly Pulitzer, Proenza Schouler and even Isaac Mizrahi, who had Target’s first capsule collection back in 2003.)

The VB x Target collection, which touts fashions for kids as well as women of all sizes, has a buyer-friendly price point, with pieces ranging in price from $6 to $70. Eager shoppers lined up outside of stores when the line officially launched on Sunday. According to Target spokesperson Joshua Thomas, many stores “had a line of some degree before opening,” but no crazy fights or altercations were reported. The Target website also received a lot of VB shopper traffic, suffering some glitches. Victoria even took to Twitter to apologize for any technical difficulties her fans were having.

Although sales weren’t as frenzied as the Lilly Pulitzer launch, many items sold quickly, including a blue pinstripe shirt dress, the “Circus Scallop” collection, scarves, and the kids’ collection. Unfortunately for shoppers who missed out on these items in stores or on the website, the only option left to get these pieces is to shop online resellers. Get ready to spend up to four times as much as the retail price if you really need to spice up your wardrobe. Prices on eBay on many pieces are reaching twice as much – and often more – as retail.

For example, the black Calla Lily button down blouse (the only item I really wanted from the collection) retails on the site for $30 and is already sold out in all sizes. The same blouse is available from many sellers on eBay for prices up to $70.

I was actually in my local Target yesterday and tried on one of the calla lily print dresses. It was cute, but it wasn’t the most flattering cut (not everyone benefits from an a-line). It was $30, and it was made like a $30 dress. I can imagine it wouldn’t last very long. I have a suspicion that most of the people who grabbed up all of the clothing at the stores and online bought it for the sole purpose of reselling it for a hefty profit. That kind of stinks, but, hey, we are a country built on opportunity, right? (Side note: if anyone bought that lily blouse and has “buyer’s regret,” let me know, and I can take it off your hands.)

I like some of the clothes – particularly the scallops and the bees, but as with every other target collection ever, I assume these are crummy quality (remember the Liberty of London stuff? the pottery was good, but the scarves etc…UGH!!!).

I can’t imagine anything is worth $70, given it will last like 3 washes? Has anyone bought anything?

  2. MunichGirl says:

I really like the orange jumpsuit and red/black dress.

  3. Bee says:

You’re going to get what you pay for. Which is a cheaply-made mass produced item of clothing. I genuinely feel these collaborations depreciate the original brand.

My body type I feel is hard to clothe….I have petite arms and legs, huge boobs, a rather small (but firm bum) and a tiny waist/back with much wider hips. I rarely look good in anything that comes mass produced off a rack. I end up looking like I’m in a sack. It’s easy for clothes to make me look like a potato with stick appendages. Bikinis are more flattering thank god where my body can do the talking.

I’m not feeling the clothing line myself, nothing I’d wear. But super cool that VB brought something fresh to the masses

The last picture makes it look as though lip injections stole her smile…not fashion.

There was still plenty of stuff at my local Target. Some cute stuff but the materials do look pretty cheap. I thought of buying one black & white dress with sunflowers but changed my mind.

A friend lives near Chicago, says there is still a lot left as well. Perhaps call a store?

    • Delta Juliet says:

There was also a lot at my local store. I was honestly surprised. I didn’t get anything…I don’t think any of it would flatter my body.

  8. Almondjoy says:

I saw the collection yesterday at my local hood Target and I loved it! Looked like everything was there in every size. I don’t think it’ll sell well in that area but the pieces were really cute.

I found out that I am pregnant with a girl a week before the launch. I may or may not have spent $400 on matching mom and daughter clothes. From Wednesday Addams chic to mod dresses. We’re going to be really really ridiculously good looking. 😅

    • QQ says:

LMAO This Is Everything to me!! Congrats on getting your Beyonce & Blue Fashions On!

    • Crumpet says:

Congratulations on the happy news! You two will be the best dressed in the nursery!

I also may have bought bee print items for me, my 2 year old daughter and my soon-to-be born baby boy…The kid stuff is so cute! Agreed with some other commenters that a lot of the adult stuff was cheap/uncomfortable fabric that didn’t interest me. Kid clothes were money though.

I bought a few things for my 7 month old as well. She grows out of things so quickly it is only going to last a few washes anyway. Surprisingly the items I got are super soft.

I ordered five items online and went to a local store and picked up three more. The presentation was not good there; Target doesn’t steam and hang their clothing items like most department stores. The usual Target shopper might pass on what appears to be a wrinkled mess.

The VB line isn’t your average Target offering. The fabrics were very nice, and the finishing surprisingly well executed for mass produced clothing. I wanted to see the “Bug Bomber” in person and snapped it up. It’s a substantial jacket and beautiful; the embroidery and beading are fabulous. I also bought the “bee” printed blouse. I’ve never bought a blouse from Target before, mostly because they look like shit, but this one is very nice. The cuffs are very well done, the fabric is weighty and the fit is perfect. The lily dress was the same, very good length and a flattering cut. I did not see a loose thread or find any other defect, unlike many other brands Target offers, with wonky hemlines, stitching defects, or fabric color variations.

I usually shop online and buy Tahari or Banana Republic suiting/dresses, and these items were of the same quality. I dry clean most of my clothing so I imagine, with care, I can wear all of the pieces just like I do everything else and give them away when I’m tired of them.

    • eggyweggs says:

@Anon, did you happen to see the Wednesday Addams sheath dress — the one with the collar and cuffs? I bought it online last night. I have a feeling I’ll be happy with it, but please share your thoughts if you saw it in person. 🙂

      • Anon says:

Eggyweggs- Yessssss! Super cute and fabric is transitional; you could wear it year round. I ordered one online but was really glad to see it in person too. The collar and cuffs are very neat and look and feel like a much more expensive piece.

Again, this college town Target did not display the items well, they were crammed on racks and were not easily visible. My son attends said college and the social butterfly goes to many Greek events; he took a date to what appeared to be a swanky venue and upon telling him his date’s top was “cute” he informed me it was a “formal romper”. I told him those were two words that should never go together but I appreciated her shoe game. (Her shoes were great and you could see them very well because she was wearing what looked like a panty skimming long sleeved blouse and mile high contrasting strappy sandals; he was sporting a tux). If your usual clothing choices are yoga pants or “formal rompers”, I could see this line not being your thing.

The Lily Pulitzer stuff did not interest me in the slightest but I didn’t pan the crap out of it because I despise the icky busy florals that look like curtains and everything looks absolutely the same, just different colors. If it’s not your thing, it’s just not your thing.

I wore the Lily dress to work yesterday and received numerous compliments throughout the day and was stopped by several women outside a trendy bar downtown after work asking me where I found it. The movement with the flounced hem is delightful. I never get as many compliments on J Crew dresses for which I pay five or six times more.

I think the pieces are really cute. Nothing groundbreaking but that’s not her market.

  12. Slowsnow says:

All H&M collabs with designers end up on EBay. Nothing to write home about. But then again I cannot stand the Beckams and find her fashion line overrated.

  13. Crumpet says:

I have Target items in my closet that have lasted for 10 years. But I take care of my clothes. I get the “You get what you pay for” comments. But some of us don’t have the means to spend $100.00 on a blouse.

I’ll buy Victoria’s blouses when they hit my local VA thrift store.

    • Betsy says:

Simple washing – i.e., taking care of – of some of these cheap clothes these days ruins them. That’s not okay.

  14. Blackcat says:

I bought a lot of pieces online. The fabrics are decent and they appear to be well made. The pants are really long-hemming them would mess up the line of the legs.

BUT, as a plus size woman all were terribly unflattering. I wish tall, thin designers would take that into account. Alter the style a bit to make if flattering for fuller figures aka women with larger breasts, hips and stomachs.

Considered selling on eBay. Checked last night and they were already loads listed.

Beckham items must be returned within 14 days-30 for Red Card users. I’ll be returning mine. Don’t want to be stuck with them if sale within 30 days.

  15. bonobchick says:

I thought Target was supposed to have fixed or at least hindered this type of resell situation after the Lilly for Target disaster. Hmm.

  16. Laura says:

    Where are these items made?

  17. me says:

Why would anyone want to pay MORE for something that is sold at Target? No one is gong to know you paid way more than the Target price ! Ridiculous.

  18. Harryg says:

I like her but I didn’t like these clothes. They just look uncomfortable and too short and just weird.

  19. homeslice says:

This collection is fugly and my store in Orange County, CA has loads left. Seems like the last two special collections has bombed. The Missoni (sp?) stuff hung around forever too…

  20. Tig says:

Folks buying in bulk for re-sale is typical for these Target collaborations. I really wanted the black cat scarf from the Jason Wu line a few years back. My daughter was able to persuade a shopper that had 15(!) in her buggy to part with one- my Mom’s day gift!

  21. erindipity says:

I ordered both the black english floral dress and the bee tank top. Both had GOD AWFUL bust darting – to the point that I couldn’t bring myself to keep them. The darts were just WAY too low (and I don’t exactly have the highest-sitting chest in the world, either)! It was quite a disappointment, because on all other fronts I did really like those two particular pieces.
