Love or hate Cate Blanchett, but can all of us admit that the red carpet is a more interesting place because of her? I generally love Cate’s ability to make strange and avant-garde fashion work. This is not really one of those times. Cate attended the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of her film Manifesto last night. She wore this Maison Valentino dress which… is a sack-dress. I think it qualifies. It’s shapeless. It doesn’t show off her figure in the least. The high-neck adds to the sack-ness. I think I sort of understand what she was attempting here, but this Valentino doesn’t get it done whatsoever. It ages her, frankly. She looks like a little old lady who buys clothes according to how much they cover up her neck. It’s weird because from the neck up, she looks the same: lovely, great skin, cute haircut.
As for this film… I’ll let Deadline explain it:
FilmRise has acquired North American distribution rights to Manifesto, the Julian Rosefeldt film that just bowed at the Sundance Film Festival. A mid-2017 release date is in the works, and the film will land on Amazon Prime Video later this year.
Blanchett plays 13 separate characters —from an anchorwoman to a homeless man—performing monologues that incorporate manifestos from 20th century art movements. Before it was a feature film, Rosefeldt debuted the project at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image as an art installation, where various characters and scenes were simultaneously displayed on 13 screens.
That sounds like a cool art project/installation. Considering it was an Aussie-based art installation, I bet that’s why Cate did it. She’ll do anything for Australian artists.
Cate was in New York for months working on the Broadway production of The Present. I kind of wonder if she’s going to stick around New York for the Met Gala next Monday. Wouldn’t that be great?

Sometimes even attractive people like Cate have blahh days and dress the way they might feel
for that day. Thoughts?
i actually think this dress is super pretty and very flattering. maybe it could do with being a bit more fitted on her chest, but it’s lovely either way. love love love recent valentino.
If it were shorter and more fitted I’d like it more.
It’s a no for me!
Cate can do no wrong. She looks lovely!
I hate the pink/lilac parts of it, and it definitely demands better hair. Other than that, it could’ve worked.
I often thinks dresses that look hideous on other stars would be beautiful if she wore them. As for this, here’s something nice: this is the best this dress will ever look.
I like the idea but I think it needed to be cinched or belted at the waist.
If I could only wear one Valentino dress, this would not be it.
However if I were wearing couture all the time and came across this gown I would totally wear it because it has interesting construction and is also just a cool idea of what a dress can be.
Mr. Valentino would never design anything this ugly! Although Cate looks great in the face department, that is one of the ugliest dress I have ever seen! She should have worn a vintage Valentino!
She had a gorgeous coat to go with that dress. Honestly she could wear a potato sack and be stunning.
