For months now, we’ve been talking about Johnny Depp’s money problems. During his divorce, he started selling off art work and liquidating some of his assets. He made some unusual moves, like firing his long-time agent and then his long-time business managers. Then he filed a lawsuit against those same managers, The Management Group, earlier this year. People always claimed that at one point, Depp was worth something like $650 million, mostly due to his exorbitant salary on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, plus some generous backend deals. But I doubt that $650 figure actually – I think Depp had tens of millions of dollars coming in, for sure, but I just doubt it was that much.
Anyway, The Hollywood Reporter has an exclusive about what’s really going on with Depp’s finances, his lawsuit against TMG and his history of bad money management. This piece surprised me because it feels like the Hollywood Reporter is taking sides… and they are not taking the movie star’s side. There’s an extensive history of Depp’s financial woes and many, many details of the stupid decisions he was making for years. You can read the full piece here. I’m just going to do a few highlights about how Depp was a f–king nightmare on the Pirates set:
Disney is still betting on Depp: All this comes as Walt Disney Studios prepares for the May 26 release of its latest Pirates movie, the fifth in the series. Studio execs worry that Depp’s personal peccadilloes could impact the marketing of their $230 million-budget tentpole and future of a $3.7 billion box-office franchise. Six years have passed since the last Pirates installment earned more than $1 billion globally, and Depp’s most recent big-budget vehicle, Alice Through the Looking Glass, lost hundreds of millions of dollars for Disney; now it’s betting that the star’s private struggles won’t sink this movie, too.
What he was like on the Australian set of Pirates 5: Sources close to the production report tales of excessive drinking, physical fights with Heard and constant lateness on set, which often left hundreds of extras waiting for hours at a time. Time and again, Bruckheimer, an assistant director and a flotilla of Disney executives led by production chief Sean Bailey were forced to huddle and debate how to handle their star’s tardiness. “He’s not a morning person,” quips one member of that group. “There were certainly days when our plans were challenged,” says Bailey. “But no one should underestimate Johnny’s passion and commitment to this character and franchise.”
Dealing with his lateness: Several times, the production staff raised the matter of Depp’s tardiness with him, both on set and in his trailer, in a largely fruitless attempt to have him toe the line. Often, sources say, a production staffer was stationed in an unmarked car outside the Coomera, Queensland, compound that Depp had rented from Grand Prix champion Mick Doohan so that the sentinel could alert everyone the second a light was switched on in the morning (or afternoon). “When he got up, he’d turn on the light, and the moment the light went on they’d call the line producer, who would then call the directors [Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg]: ‘He’s up! He’s getting ready!’ ” says an on-set source. “They even had a special code term, like ‘The eagle has landed.’ Johnny had no idea this was going on.”
The finger: Filming shut down at one point when Depp injured himself, slicing open his finger. “That was pretty serious,” says Bruckheimer. Though many outlets reported the wound was the result of a booze-fueled marital dispute, Jerry Bruckheimer suggests otherwise. “We don’t really know. He got it caught in a car door, or he got it caught in a sliding door. I’ve heard a couple of versions.”
It really feels like the extended shoot in Australia was the tipping point – that’s where Depp stayed while filming Pirates 5, and that’s when he began pulling away from all of his long-time business associates and friends. TMG’s managers provided the Hollywood Reporter with extensive documentation (receipts, if you will) to back up their side of the story, which is that Depp’s drug and alcohol abuse fell off a cliff about three years ago and it made it difficult to talk sense into him. But even before that, Depp was never good with money and he never thought long-term about what it would cost to keep up all of his properties, his yacht, his artwork and more.
Also: habitual lateness is THE WORST. Imagine if an actress had pulled that sh-t.

This was a fascinating read. I cannot believe I once thought Johnny Depp persona was genuine to some extent. I’m such an artist who lives for my art, in reality he’s the embodiment of the worst aspects of Hollywood. Oh, and I don’t want to ever again talk about those “difficult actresses”.
They hired a drunk pirate to play a drunk pirate, what did they expect? An smooth sailing? *I’ve made a pun*
+1
Lol
Re: “difficult actresses”: actually, this sh*t got me thinking about Marilyn Monroe in her later days, the few years before she died when she was Hollywood’s biggest star and always, always felt she wasn’t good enough to even show up. And when she finally did, she was hours late. It’s pretty well documented, google ‘Marilyn Monroe tardiness’. She also had a substance abuse problem, of course.
I’m not saying it’s the same case and in no way am I excusing Depp’s behavior, but I can sort of understand how he got to this place. I hope he gets help before it’s too late, is what I’m saying.
That’s exactly who I thought of – Marilyn. The difference being that she was fired (then rehired) from Something’s Got To Give as a result of her constant tardiness and no shows.
Point being, she faced the consequences of her actions. At least short term.
Also different is the fact that she was mentally ill, and therefore a much more sympathetic figure than a “garden variety” (no such thing really, I guess) addict.
Difficult actresses makes me think of Elizabeth Taylor’s tardiness and insistence on jewellery as ‘gifts’ from the producers on top of her salary.
In her case she took pride in being late because she said she had been forced to be scheduled as a child actor and as soon as she became an adult, she vowed never to be on time anywhere or for anyone. Including her own funeral where she had arranged for her casket to arrive later than schefuled timings!!!
I hope karma will be his new bff.
Also notice how everybody keeps mentioning “physical fights” with his ex wife but they never use the correct term like domestic violence or abuse, really interesting.
Johnny debt is a piece of work, really pretentious that stopped being relevant or interesting years ago.
Ha, Johnny Debt! 😀
But … his actual name means “idiot” in German — also accurate.
I couldn’t agree more
Physical fights = Domestic Abuse
THR must still be working for his PR but the meaning can’t be altered.
Also what a bunch of cowards these people were. If the rumors about Depp abusing Amber were there since his work in POTC5 and still keep quiet and let her to be dragged by his team during the divorce
This article is amazing. TMG is NOT playing and are providing the receipts. Hollywood Reporter would not proceed with a story like this unless they had the sources and the evidence (too risky since they need studio relationships. I’d say we are getting a pretty clear picture.
And to all the fans doing their “he’s being bullied! He was set up by Amber! He goes to children’s hospitals!”. FFS your “fave” is very sick. He needs help. If you insist on feeding his delusions and living in denial forgive me if when he’s dead of an overdose or alcohol effects I roll my eyes as you weep and wail. You should be rooting for him to get help now, anything else is just complicit.
Oh and don’t even get me started on how none of this would be tolerated if he was a woman. 🙄
Yup, don’t nobody ever talk about Heard being a golddigger. Depp loves to throw his cash around (can’t believe Vanessa and Lily-Rose didn’t want him to stay solvent! They have enough properties!). And the fact that none of these people came out to mention that actually Depp is a rage monster until now when they need money is absolutely disgusting. Heard knew his crew knew about everything and they never extended their support. Goes to show what they really care about. It even says he was violent against his own security which means Heard was saying the truth (of course!) but they LIED for him and threw an abused woman under the bus. It makes my blood boil.
This quote perfectly encapsulates current Depp:
In the old days, it was just [a question of] when he was free, but now it became [a matter of] finding a time when he was free and clear of mind and in the right mood. He got angry a lot. He’d scream at someone that worked at the house or his security.
Dude is a raging alcoholic and he’s going to be the male version of Baby Jane because nobody is helping him by standing up to him. 40 people to assist him and dude cannot get on work on time, treat people with respect, bathe himself and deal with his substance abuse? He’s either going to die soon or male Baby Jane IF he makes to old age.
I doubt he even told Vanessa or Lily-Rose why he was putting it up for sale. Their reactions likely had to do with the fact that as a family, they spent a lot of time there and it was a place of good memories. That, and the boat which he renamed after splitting with Vanessa. Since it had syllables of all of their names when they were a united family, renaming it differently must have seemed a bit like a disavowel to the kids. Selling off another piece of their “happy family memories”…I can easily see how that would be hurtful to the kids. And Vanessa was probably speaking up for her children, not herself.
He didn’t rename the boat, he sold it like in 2013.
@yawn: According to the article linked here by Kaiser, he sold it in 2015 to JK Rowling and had renamed it “Amphitrite”. “Am fit right”… clearly renamed for Amber. No longer for his kids. Kind of a dick move right there, thinking about it.
I used to be a huge JD fan but I’m so over him and his arrogant behavior.
If this movie doesn’t do well Disney will dump him, career over.
(Disney) movies like that always do well.
And yet some of his fans still blame Amber, you just need to read the comments on the DM or People.
I think it is time for Disney to go and find a new golden chicken. Because this one turned out to be a cock
Imagine if an actress would be late everyday to work, constantly drunk, had some sound thecny to feed her lines because she would be too lazy to decorate, abused her partner, would like violent outbursts on hotel and against staff and paparazzi and would say the most out of touch with reality things (like being in a photoshoot is like being raped).
An actress would never be forgiven or given another chance, so why keep insisting on male white actors?
Hollywood is part of the problem and not liberal at all.
So true. The best female example I can think of was Marilyn Monroe who was by all accounts a massive pain for most of her “peak years”. Laurence Olivier tried to fire her on the Prince and The Showgirl but couldnt get it passed the studio honchos she was sleeping with. But she was finally fired on Somethings Got To Give, which was a massive deal considering they were already promoting the hell out of a skinny dipping scene she had already shot. She of course died shorthly thereafter.
Hollywood then went through some extremely ironic shifts in the 60s that eliminated the A list actress. I am still surprised by how female centric early Hollywood storytelling was. Casting couches aside, it was a good time for actresses. In fact the first performers to earn production credits and to cross the 1million dollar pay mark were women. But at some point in the late 50s and early 60s the bulk of the household names suddenly became male and the male actor became the bigger asset. And so it has remained. The male assets will get away with a tonne where a female actress would be instantly blacklisted.
Don’t go too far, Katherine Heigl isn’t even a Drunk, of an abuser, Just a Known Harpy and look at where she is.. See also Sean Young Fairuza Balk ( any chick that gets mouthy on set of doesnt wanna sleep with the guy or has more personality than they need her too or is just unprofessional- They Get REMOVED OUT THE PAINT and PROMPTLY SO)
Clearly, absolutely actresses are treated “less than” in every way. But in this one particular instance I’m not too sorry about it. As long as Depp is bringing in the big money they’ll excuse him and enable him to an early miserable grave. Reminds me of Judy Garland. Used and abused til she was a worn out shell. Of course I have great empathy for her and not any for Depp. A young woman didn’t have power or choices. He does.
Just recently there was a story about Angelina Jolie’s wild image around the Lara Croft times. Studio ordered multitude of drug tests and hired essentially a babysitter for her who got to tell how she is supposed to take her baths and blah… Because crazy women amirite…
She was also not yet an international superstar in 2001. She was at the time a bit of a studio gamble, that of course paid off tremendously. Depp has starred in 4 of the top 30 money making movies of all time for Disney. They’re going to bend over backward to keep that money train rolling.
Well, she was never Marilyn/Johnny level. but Lindsay Lohan was still given way more chances than she should have, it took many years for people to finally see her for what she is
“The eagle has landed” is actually very obvious, so if Johnny didn’t notice that it was about him when he showed up, he has a whole set of new problems.
I think he’s an addict and because he is rich and famous he’s not been allowed to hit rock bottom – the place all addicts must go before recovery. imagine all the creepy hanger ons hes got around him sayin ‘yes jonny yes the poo smells like Savauge colone. yummy’.
if he weren’t such a douche bag it would be sad really. I just can’t forgive the appalling way Amber heard was treated though, addiction or not. and you’re spot on about the double standard thing. No actress would be tolerated being perpetually late and high on a billion dollar franchise. uh uh.
Yes, those guys that refer to him as the ’emperor’ in a non ironic way as they defend his bad bahaviour.
I believe all of this, but I don’t get the narrative that this is something new.
A friend of mine who is a generation older than me worked with him as a costume designer around the year 1990. He was extremely difficult, erratic, impossible to work with or schedule with, and black out drunk or high a lot of the time.
He was very charming and sweet to her when sober, but blew up at her and everyone else when he was not sober. She only worked with him for a short period and never wanted to deal with him again. So this has been his whole career. It must be baaaad bad bad now, I can’t even imagine.
His good PR team is the response
They spent decades trying to cover his bad behavior from the public and making him look at some angel, which he isn’t
As usual a man is coddled & forgiven for his behavior. The double standard is sickening. Goes to show that these guys can do anything in that business, because there will always be someone to wipe their ass.
Lateness is so disgusting.
We were raised to be a good 10-15 minutes early. Even if it means sitting in the car waiting around for a bit- lateness is probably one of my absolute biggest pet peeves. And I’m not talking about situations where it can’t be helped – that can happen to anyone. It’s the people who don’t have the respect for others who don’t bother to keep an eye on the time or be prepared, or let people know they’re running late that are the worst.
We have friends who literally have planned outings. We have to harass them for a time to meet up because they can’t plan their way out of a paper bag. Then they show up a good 40 minutes late. We live literally 5 minutes down the road from them – they don’t even bother to leave by the time they’re telling people to be somewhere.
Our family saying. “If you’re not 10 minutes early–you’re late.”
I had a problem with timekeeping as a child so I developed lots of internal systems to ensure that I always arrive on time (like: telling myself what time I have to start getting ready, what time I have to be out the door, building in extra time just in case there are train delays, double-checking the destination address, etc.). I understand why people are late (I was born with that type of personality) but I can never understand why people don’t figure out how to correct their lateness tendencies. Just come up with a system that works for you, people!!
Gosh yes and me, tardiness drives me mad. I once worked alongside a women who was late for everything to the point that it became her power play. It was so tedious and boring and presumptive that her time was more important than anyone elses (it wasn’t). We don’t say “Punctuality is the politeness of Prince’s” for nothing.
Why anyone in their right mind watched past the first Pirates movie is beyond me. They are god awful wastes of film. As long as studio’s continue to kiss stars asses and pay them to misbehave, they will continue to act like drunk brats. Fire him. Period.
There’s a lot of standing around on a film set under normal circumstances – good old hurry up and wait. Film crews will forgive a lot if they are well fed (Seriously, if you want to make any sort of movie, DO NOT skimp on catering, it keeps the crew from mutiny) but that sounds like a tense set and a costly one – overtime for that many people is not cheap.
I hope the lose even more since they keep giving Country to this druggie Wife Beating Over dipped in Man Flare and Nicotine Old F*ckboy
Yes-how is it that he keeps getting hired?? Ugh.
He’s determined to turn into Marlon Brando and he’s succeeding. It must be so satisfying for him to actually succeed at something for a change.
I love that Bruckheimer wouldn’t even stand up for him when he was asked how Depp injured his finger. He flat out says that he has been told multiple stories..
At least we still have Brad Pitt!
Never bought into the tortured artist shtick he was always a drunk phony to me.
