Alexis Bledel won her first Emmy for ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

This ^^ is Alexis Bledel attending the Creative Arts Emmy Awards last Sunday. Overall, I’d say the dress is okay, but I’m not a huge fan. I do like the color and somehow it makes the lace less overwhelming. But the sheer with the high neckline – I feel like I’m seeing this everywhere. Plus the full sleeves weigh it down. I love her statement earrings, though. You can see them better at the end of the post. Her hair and makeup look great, though, so it balances the overall look.

Alexis received her very first Emmy nomination for Best Guest Actress in a Drama Series for The Handmaid’s Tale. I loved Alexis as Rory on Gilmore Girls. Her portrayal was more layered than she gets credit for; conveying flaws under a polished veneer, while remaining stalwart as the emotional bridge between Lorelei and her parents. All of that is to say, I think Alexis is underestimated as an actress. She made kind of a lateral move character-wise in Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. But then she surprised many of us with her damaged, philandering housewife on Mad Men. However, she blew me out of the water with her defiant yet vulnerable Ofglen in The Handmaids Tale. Apparently, she blew the Emmy voters away too because she won her category!

When Alexis Bledel took home her first Emmy Award on Sunday, she wasn’t sure what to feel first.

Speaking with ET’s Courtney Tezeno backstage after her thrilling win at the 2017 Creative Arts Emmys in Los Angeles, the 35-year-old actress gushed, “I’m surprised and really excited [and] a little emotional. It’s all the feelings.”

Bledel won the award for Best Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Ofglen in The Handmaid’s Tale, and the star said she appreciates being involved in the acclaimed series.

“I’m so fortunate to be a part of such an incredible company of actors and to get to tell this story now is just such an honor,” Bledel shared. “People have had such strong reactions to it, and it’s been so interesting to talk about everything it brings up for people. To continue doing the work, to get to go back and keep doing the work is just so exciting.”

[From ET]

The Handmaid’s Tale has already won three of their 13 Emmy Nominations. Alexis wore a blue ribbon in support of the ACLU and in her acceptance speech discussed the show partnering with Change.org, pledging to, “to encourage us all to take action…sign up, speak up and stay awake.” She beat out some very impressive competition: Cicely Tyson/How to Get Away with Murder, Laverne Cox/Orange is the New Black, Shannon Purser/Stranger Things and Alison Wright/The Americans. Also nominated in this category was Ann Dowd for The Leftovers. Ann co-starred with Alexis in Handmaid’s as Aunt Lydia. You know who else won for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy? Sookie St. James! Melissa McCarthy picked hers up for her portrayal of Sean Spicer on SNL. That just leaves Jess/Milo Ventimiglia for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series on Sunday for a GG triumvirate. Real life husband and Mad Men co-star. Vincent Kartheiser was not present but Alexis thanked him in her speech and said they would be celebrating later.

Speaking of Handmaid’s, apparently, season two will have a full 13 episodes as opposed to season one’s 10. The word is it will be darker and more grim. More grim – how?! I’m still recovering from season one! *SPOILER* And now we know that Alexis’ Emily is coming back and being listed as a season regular. I am delighted she’ll be back but also confused and devastated. Do you think it will be through flashbacks or do you think Emily survived? I know her fate in the book. Gawd, Alexis gutted me during the trial and ‘judgment’ scenes – I don’t know if I can handle it. But I do think her Emmy was very well deserved and I am delighted for her. Go Rory er, Alexis!

I’m so happy for her! I couldn’t believe when I saw her in the handmaid’s tale. So unlike anything she’s done. Great job. Congrats!!!

    • Char says:

Watching her in The Handmaid’s Tale blew me away, I could not belive it was Rory! She is such a great actress!

  2. Louise177 says:

The dress would look so much better without sleeves. She looks grandmotherly. I want to watch The Handmaid’s Tale but the reviews are putting me off. As good as they are I’m worried I won’t be able to handle it since it’s such a depressing show.

  3. minx says:

Granny dress. Congrats to her, though.

  4. Liberty says:

    Congratulations to Alexis! Well deserved.

  5. Sixer says:

Congratulations to her. She was fab in HT.

(That said, I love Ann Dowd and think she should get all the awards for everything.)

    • slowsnow says:

Ann Dowd, man. My whole family would make fun of me because while we watched The Leftovers I was all starry-eyed looking at her, commenting on how she could just let the text flow out of her in a completely believeable way (very important for her character btw) whilst they were horrified with Patsy. I was IN LOVE.

      • Sixer says:

She is an unbelievably good actor. I agree with you – I watch her in awe.

      • Adrien says:

Yeah, Ann Dowd. She’s great in everything even in small roles. She is great in Handmaid’s Tale too. When will she ever get her due? Otoh, the good thing about not winning awards is that it makes her unrecognizable. She gets cast in tv and movies easily.

      • Esmom says:

Yes, it seems criminal that she hasn’t won any awards for The Leftovers. I haven’t seen Handmaid’s Tale but having read the book and seen her in The Leftovers I can’t imagine her performance as anything less than perfection.

      • Nicole Savannah, GA says:

Dowd is so amazing. I stare at her in bewildered amazement.

  6. Nicole says:

She deserved it. Her best acting were the scenes that she had no lines and you could only see her eyes. THAT was some stellar acting. The fact that she was able to deliver such gut punches with half her face covered and in silence…yea much deserved.

  7. slowsnow says:

Alexis Bledel, hmmmm. I dunno. I haven’t watched the HT so all glory to her for this.
But AB as Rory? Don’t get me started. She was so one-dimensional.
And how slow were she and Logan: sooooo slow, the moving, the staring, the speaking. Borefest.
I say this as a Gilmore Girl afficionada. But give me Lauren Graham and Kelly Bishop any day.

    • Esmom says:

I’ve never seen GG but she was amazing in Mad Men.

    • tealily says:

I loved her on the original show but she suuuuuuuuuuuuuucked in A Year in the Life. I wasn’t floored by her in Mad Men either, but she was fine. This is all to say, I’m surprised to hear how great she is in Handmaid’s Tale. I haven’t gotten around to watching it yet, but it’s on my list. I read the book many years ago and… well, I guess I just don’t want to go back to that world yet.

  8. Talie says:

Probably means this show will sweep because let’s keep it real, she ain’t all that. I remember her on Mad Men…it was bad.

    • minx says:

I’m a huge Mad Men fan and still rewatch episodes on Netflix, but I fast forward through her scenes. She just wasn’t that great in her part.

  9. HK9 says:

Nice to see someone win an award that really deserved it. Congrats.

  10. serena says:

Aw I’m so glad her talent is being awarded!

  11. adastraperaspera says:

Lifelong fan of Atwood and Handmaid’s Tale in particular. Remember reading it while living in Cambridge, MA and freaking out when walking by the walls around Harvard Yard. Too real. Anyhow, I haven’t yet watched the series, because I’m afraid it would scare me too much–especially in our current political predicament. But I have seen clips, and they’re powerful. I’m so happy to hear that the show (and the important story it tells) is getting major attention! I hope it will inspire budding feminists like it inspired me back then.

  12. Fran says:

I love love love her!! She’s so reserved and a good actress! She needs to work more, and she should have won more awards for GG!

  13. tracking says:

So excited about this, the role was a major step forward for her!

  14. DesertReal says:

    She deserved it, congrats.
Her portrayal of her character was…haunting.

  15. Sylvia says:

Yay, congrats to her! I loved her in GG, but she was amazing in The Handmaid’s Tale. A well deserved Emmy.

Although, I have to say I’m not feeling this trend of Mormon sisterwife-inspired evening wear. It’s almost never flattering.

  16. Lucy2 says:

Well, who would’ve guessed she would win an Emmy before Lauren Graham? Congrats to her, I haven’t watched the series yet, but I’ve heard she’s fantastic in it.

  17. Lisa says:

Lauren Graham not having an Emmy makes me sad. It’s great for Alexis though. I never saw Handmaids Tale, got to check it out. And I can’t believe Rory is 35! Geez

  18. Yeahright says:

She looks beautiful but that dress looks like something Nicole Kidman decided not to wear.
I like how she had a baby and no one noticed! Plus she’s from my hometown.
