Robert Pattinson: ‘Every person I know who’s got famous is completely nuts’

BFI London Film Festival - Good Time - Premiere

There’s some talk that Robert Pattinson could sneak into some awards nominations this year for Good Time. The film wasn’t exactly the best-reviewed movie of the year, but most critics took a moment to praise Sparkles and his performance as an American hoodlum. Personally, I don’t think Sparkles will get nominated of much, but who knows? It would be fun to see him at some awards shows. Sparkles is still promoting Good Time with print interviews too, which is why there are some new quotes about how he needed therapy, and how he still doesn’t know what to think about Donald Trump’s obsession with him. Some assorted quotes:

He needed therapy once he became famous: “Pretty much every person I know who’s got famous is completely nuts. It’s just isolation and also the repetitiveness of your interactions with people… It’s just weird.”

Maintaining his sanity: “I had good agents and stuff and I’ve had really good friends since the beginning. So I think when it gets dangerous for people is when you have no friends and you think, ‘Oh, if I get strangers to love me then it will fill that hole.’ And then when it doesn’t fill the hole, then you go 10 times crazier. I try to not be seen whatsoever between movies. So hopefully the only thing that exists of you in the public realm is what you agree to put out there. It’s always just a control thing. If the control of your life has been taken away from you, that’s when you go a little crazy.”

He did go crazy at one point: “[But] I can’t really tell how crazy I was before…[I had] a lot of anxiety with everything,” leading to “just kind of paralysis, indecision. You don’t really end up doing a lot.”

He was in therapy: He says that his parents were “literally horrified” when they found out his was in therapy. He recalls, “And I was like, ‘Why is that a bad thing?’ There’s just this weird stigma. It’s so strange… But I think it’s a sort of throwback attitude.” As for his own experience with counseling, he confesses, “I don’t go that often. I just really like [my therapist]… You’re just trying to figure out how you feel about something. I’ve got a lot out of it… I mean [without therapy], I don’t know how you’re supposed to do [life].”

On Trump’s 2012 tweets about Robsten: “It’s weird. I did notice—I think today or yesterday—in one of his Twitter cleanups that he deleted all those tweets! I was like, hey, are you trying to sweep me under the rug, man? What happened? I’m a part of your life!”

[From Gossip Cop and The Daily Beast]

I wonder if his “crazy” years were the post-Twilight, post-Kristen years. It seemed like he was going through a difficult time back then, and nearly every interview mentioned that he lived alone in LA with no furniture and rarely left his house. But yes, why the stigma about talk therapy or any kind of therapy? Rob is exactly the kind of person who needs to talk through his issues and work on stuff that way, and there’s no shame in that. Pretty soon, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are going to beg Rob to join their Heads Together campaign. Can’t you see it?

Also: Trump’s tweets about Sparkles are still up.

My former brother in law, who is successful, very wealthy, once told me every rich person he knew was weird. He is a self made man, and has trouble relating to them.

  2. Incredulous says:

He’s a great actor when he cares about the material and has always struck me as someone who spends too much time in his own head. A long career for him, methinks, though never confident enough to take it for granted.

Staying out of the limelight when there’s nothing to promote is a big, long-term plus, too. Keep on keepin’ on there, Robert.

  3. Courtney says:

    Still would.

    • milla says:

His bff is Ed Westwick… so, nope.

      • Anname says:

I have been a Rob fan for years, and as far as I know, Rob does not hang out with Ed Westwick. From where are you getting that? They have attended the same events on occasion, and there are a few pics around, but they aren’t buddies.

      • Milla says:

Pretty sure you can Google their history. Of course it doesn’t mean they are still friends or that Rob is anything like Ed. It doesn’t even mean Rob knows anything about the rapes.

I’m in a phase where every male is a potential predator. Nothing against Pattinson, just Hollywood.

      • Jj says:

His bffs are guys he grew up with near London. He’s never been seen hanging out with Ed Weatwick. Ok crazy
If you google them, there’s one picture at an event from close to a decade ago.
        Rob doesn’t know him

      • debs says:

lol, no. They took a pic together like 10 years ago at some Young Hollywood party. They’re not friends.

      • TotallyOld says:

I’m sorry but what? Rob is not bff’s with Ed Westwick. Your information is wrong and saying things like that is disingenuous to say the least. Please don’t spread fake/false statements….we have enough of that going on in this world as it is with our so called leaders.

  4. Anname says:

Good time is 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, so I think it was reviewed rather well actually. Unfortunately, it did not do well at the box office.

Rob is in almost every critic’s top 10 list for best actor this year, but I don’t think he will sneak into the Oscars. Daniel Day Lewis, Gary Oldman, Timothee Chalamet are definites. Franco, Gyllenhaal, Hanks, Jackman… there are lots vying for the other 2 open spots. But I do think he has a shot at Golden Globe and/or SAG. And he’s got the Gotham nomination, and Spirit nominations are announced next week. It’s nice to see him in the mix for any of these award nominations.

This theory is going to sound very weird, but it could explain Trump’s fascination with Robsten and Twilight.

Like Rob, many people are flummoxed by Trump’s strange pop culture tweets. But consider that Trump was eyeing the presidency in 2012. So why tweet about a mundane pop culture issue? Well, it follows the Russian bot troll playlist. http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/jenna-abrams-twitter-account-russia-propaganda-far-right-voice-alt-tweet-blog-xenophobic-donald-a8035411.html

Trump used the playbook later used by Russian bots to gain followers and garner controversy online. 1) tweet about mundane pop culture issue (Kardashians, Twilight, etc); 2) gain followers and attention; 3) begin to tweet tribalist observations; 4) become totally political. This way, you have a way larger online presence once you do go political than if you’d just come out swinging.

    • Anname says:

I always thought it was one of his many attempts to glom onto the most popular thing at the time. Trump invited Rob to the Ms. Universe pageant in one of those tweets – can you imagine Trump’s preening if he could associate himself with the “it” guy that year? Whether it was simple vanity or a planned propaganda technique, it makes sense.

      • Annabelle Bronstein says:

That could be it, too. I go back and forth between thinking that Trump is just an idiot who fell upward, and thinking he’s actually a master manipulator who planned for this for years. It is fascinating/horrifying to watch old interviews with Trump in the 80’s and 90’s when he talks about becoming president.

      • ashleesimpsonsnose says:

agreed, anname. i always viewed it as trump just yapping about whatever was buzzing at the time to get his name out there, and also because he genuinely can’t shut up about anything. his brain can’t process anything beyond silly pop culture-related stuff so he always comments because it’s all that interests him and all that his mind can handle. that’s why he spent years on howard stern and larry king giving all of his thoughts on brangelina and britney and k-fed. he just never graduated from reading page six and watching trashy tv.

    • Annetommy says:

I just thought it was trump indicting his distaste for people who cheat in a relationship. Because he would never do it. Or perhaps he hoped he had a chance with Rob.

    • raincoaster says:

That’s a slick and smart analysis.

  6. Another Anne says:

The movie is just opening in the UK this week, and gets released on dvd next week, which is why more interviews are coming out now. It’s an arthouse type of film, critical reviews have been really good, but definitely not a mainstream kind of movie. It will be interesting to see what kinds of awards it gets nominated for, in addition to Gothams.

Rob really is fantastic in it, it’s like he completely transforms into another person.

  7. Totally old says:

Yes, I was coming on to say the reviews for Good Time have been fantastic. Rob is getting even better reviews than the movie. He is a long shot at an Oscar nomination but it’s fine….he has earned credibility which is far more important in the long term.

  8. Ankhel says:

Did he just call K Stew completely nuts? He sort of did, didn’t he?

  9. Jane says:

I think he is very neurotic and “hard work” to date. But he covers it with a goofiness in public. I never thought he and twigs would last and he does seem much happier since they split. I hope next girl he dates he doesn’t rush to propose. He needs to date somebody out of the public eye that his insane fans cannot creep on. They crap they said about both Kristen and twigs was disgusting. Death threats and racism … all because they dated some actor?

  10. TrixC says:

What did he even mean “cheated like a dog”? Dogs are famously loyal, right?
