Demi Lovato brought newly elected transgender lawmaker from Virginia, Danica Roem, with her to the AMAs. This was a great idea in theory and Danica was lovely and well spoken in the interview I saw on the red carpet on E!. Demi, on the other hand, claimed that she could relate to Danica and that she wanted to bring her to AMAs because “I feel like we’ve been through some of the same things” and that her song “Sorry Not Sorry” shows “the bullying I’ve experienced on a daily basis with haters and I’m kind of shutting them down.” I thought “Sorry Not Sorry” was about showing an ex you’re living your best life and now I’m disappointed. Demi didn’t come across half as well as Danica did, is what I’m saying, and she didn’t need to make it all about Demi. (Incidentally, I read a great profile of Danica in the NY Times about how she won her district by being relatable and focusing on achievable solutions to problems in her area, particularly the congested commutes into DC.)
This is ultimately a fashion post with more gowns from the AMAs though. Demi was in a strapless Ester Abner dress with a gathered overlay on top of a nude-colored lining. This dress is gorgeous and I love the detail. It also complement’s Danica’s look in that the journalist and metal head (she is!) was also in black, in an off the shoulder gown with a sheer neckline. Demi performed last night at the AMAs, she did “Sorry Not Sorry” while mean tweets showed on the screen behind her. Lame. Look at how genuinely happy Danica looks to be there.
Here’s host Tracee Ellis Ross in ruby Stella McCartney. Tracee presented the lifetime achievement award to her mom, Diana Ross, and she homaged some of her mom’s amazing disco fashion during the ceremony. You can see Tracee’s outfit changes on People’s site, she went for drama! I love Tracee she really knows how to bring it. This dress reminds me of some of Tracee’s JcPenney collection in that there’s plenty of jewel tone sequins and holiday outfits. I don’t normally shop retail, I love thrift shops, vintage and secondhand fashion, but I’m going to check out Tracee’s line and maybe buy some pieces.
Tracee’s legendary mom, Diana Ross, 73, in an weird poofy black sweetheart neckline dress and a giant hat with a veil and making it all work on the red carpet. Here’s a link to a video of Diana accepting her lifetime achievement award, surrounded by her friends and family.
Lea Michele was in J. Mendel and she was on the red carpet with her stylist, Brad Goreski. Her makeup was too muted and matchy and something was going on with her face, like she just got fresh lip injections and couldn’t move her muscles normally. This dress is cheesy and too fussy, I dislike the color, and look at Lea spreading out the skirt to create drama where there is none.
Here’s Pink in Monique Lhullier, in a dress that’s very similar to the tiered tulle thing she wore to the CMAs. She likes a huge gown with a giant skirt and she’s consistent. I do like the color and the floral appliques along the bodice. Pink performed “Everybody Hurts” with Kelly Clarkson, which you can see at Popsugar.
Speaking of Kelly Clarkson, she wore a black velvet and gold metallic off-the-shoulder Christian Siriano gown. She brought her 16 year-old stepdaughter and three year-old daughter with her. Cute! I like this gown it’s kind of perfect for the season. Her makeup was a little dark for my taste but it’s not bad.
Heidi Klum was in Vintage Gianni Versace and I loved this gown so much. It’s got that awesome 80s vibe without going too far with it. (It may indeed be 80s/90s.) The wavy sequin pastel pattern is perfection. It didn’t need to be so low cut and Heidi could have done something differently with her hair, but that’s a minor complaint.

Demi Lovato does Demi Moore doing Morticia Adams.
That’s exactly what I was thinking!
What in the name of all that is holy did she DO to her face???
Damn I thought the same. Demi Lavato is channelling Demi Moore
I came here basically to say the same thing. All I see is Demi Moore!
Shades of Demi Moore, for sure. Also, too much hair.
Kept scanning the piece to see Demi Moore mentioned because…holy obvious.
Heidi Klum looks amazing- 1st time I’ve ever liked her style- apart from her awesome Halloween costumes 🙂
Great dress, great hair. New stylist maybe?
Fantastic dress ( although a bit too deep of a v for my taste)- just LOVE that sequined print. Colors together are really harmonious. Heidi’s hairstyle seems like an afterthought.
I liked Demi’s dress, it’s beautiful and interesting, maybe I’ll copy to the next event, haha.
Kelly Clarkson, oh my. This is one of the ugliest dresses I ever laid my eyes on. And the lipstick. And the hair.
Heidi looks stunning, but try-hard.
I love Demi’s dress. It fits her curves in all the right places. I also thought it was sweet to bring Danica. Sorry Not Sorry is about rising about hate, and being unapologetic about who you are- I think Danica represents that perfectly. Besides Demi the red carpet was boring. Pink’s outfit was just terrible.
Danica has gorgeous hair… she gives me hair envy.
She looked great. I like the super-long, flatironed hair for her. Much better than that pulled back haircut she had for her last album.
A big NOPE to all of these
Seeing the frizzy hair extensions has inspired me to chop my hair off at the shoulders today. Lea Michelle looks like she has bad breath. I don’t know why her face makes me think that but it does.
Am I tripping or is this the best that Dems has ever looked? She looks freaking gorgeous here and she looks like Demi Moore herself here.
I have the sadz for Kelly. That is the worst I’ve seen her on a red carpet…YIKES!
Kelly never looks like a star, always looks very Walmart.
Savage! I love it!
She doesn’t carry extra weight too well.
Um, did Heidi Klum finally do something right on the red carpet?!?
Yes! Very odd. Don’t worry, the world will right itself soon enough. Next week, she’ll find two hankies, some glitter and feathers, and hey presto, pure Heidi.
Demi KILLED the red carpet.
And Heidi has the *worst* breast augmentation I’ve seen in years. UGH. So thirsty and try hard.
Jewel tones and sequins? That is right up my alley. I’m off to check Tracee’s line.
WHAT? Demi made it ALL about herself?! You don’t say?!! [Sarcasm] Whoever Demi is trying to prove she’s living her best life or whatever is probably not even listening or paying attention… we should do the same.
Tracee looks beautiful. I just love her so much.
Now THIS is how you do sexy, Heidi!!! She looks stunning. It’s absolutely amazing what a well designed dress can do. Comparing this Versace look to previous gowns that Heidi has sported (gowns that are similarly revealing) really goes to underline Versace’s mastery of craft.
