Rob Lowe is one of those actor who surprises me with an enjoyable performance whenever I see him on the small screen. My brother had us binge watching The Orville on Hulu over the weekend, it’s Seth MacFarlane’s humorous Star Trek spoof, and Lowe had a guest role as a blue alien. (Charlize Theron had a guest role in another episode too!) Even in blue makeup with gills on his head, Lowe was somehow charismatic and charming, although I suspect that character was written specifically for him. He’s wonderful on Parks and Rec of course too, and who can forget his turn as the plastic surgeon on Behind the Candelabra? Lowe, 53, is still in tip top shape. He gave an interview to People Magazine to promote his new collaboration with Atkins, which as you know is the low-carb diet. Lowe is their first male spokesperson. Lowe doesn’t drink and has followed the Atkins diet for years, so this sounds like a natural fit for him. In his talk with People he also called his teenage sons his greatest achievement and gushed about his wife of 26 years, Sheryl Berkoff.
On his greatest achievement
“My boys are definitely my greatest achievement. I can only take half of the credit – maybe not even half! The rest goes to my wife Sheryl, who’s been just an amazing partner. Looking back on this year, the thing I’m most grateful is my family, my health and the opportunities that have been laid out before me.”Why he’s endorsing Atkins
“Atkins is a great way to loose [sic] weight but I don’t use it for that. I use it as an overall lifestyle. It’s not a diet. It is a sustainable long-term easy lifestyle…“The irony is, I’ve been eating Atkins for years. I think I probably started in my late 30s. Atkins is the authority of low carb, high protein low sugar diets so I’ve been doing it for so many year [sic] that when they came to me and asked to do this together it was like I’m already doing it, so it was the perfect fit.”
On taking care of himself
“I have to take care of myself and be disciplined. I have to get enough sleep, workout, eat right. I look at myself as no different than a professional athlete. If you go to sleep on it, you can’t expect to have the energy to be diverse and have longevity.”On New Year’s resolutions
“I think New Year’s resolutions are a really good exercise. I’m into longevity and consistency. A resolution needs to be something that I can integrate in a daily basis. I think it’s a great time for everybody to reflect on the person they want to be.”
I’m a calorie counter and food weigher as I always mention and I doubt I could give up carbs, but Atkins works for a lot of people and I know people who swear by it. Personally I believe no food is good or bad and I eat everything in moderation (ok I eat way too much sugar but I’m working on that). I really like what Lowe said about how New Year’s resolutions are a way to “reflect on the person [you] want to be.” I’m kind of hazy on mine and need to work on that. I think reducing sugar is at the top of the list. *Eats Reese’s mini cup*

I’m not feeling Rob Lowe with this tan, facial scruff and lighter hair. I hope that’s for a role.

Given that my hormonal profile is…. “jacked,” shall we say, I should at least count carbs, but counting carbs always makes me a little crazy.
Maybe just start with reducing carbs! Whenever you go to have a burger or sandwich, just do open faced. That right there will make a huge difference. The counting does suck though, but I have to weigh and track everything or I’ll overeat. Le sigh.
Excellent advice!! Even I find this way manageable and I would have built my house out of bread if code allowed it 😂😂😂
I’ve been off and on keto for the last year, which is pretty much the atkins diet without the phases. I agree that it’s sustainable, so I was surprised that it was ranked one of the worst diets this year because it’s “over-restrictive.” It’s not hard once you get into it, and you surprisingly don’t feel hungry because the fats are satisfying and filling. I do still have to weigh my food and count calories though, because I can’t gauge portions and it’s very hard for me to feel “full”. It did help clear up my skin though 🙂
A true keto diet is absurdly hard and restrictive, and really not recommended by most medical professionals for normal folks.
I need to eat low carb for my digestive issues and I practice IF (Intermittent Fasting) which offers people on any style diet freedom from needing to count calories or anything else. If that sounds appealing, check out Delay Don’t Deny by Gin Calhoun Stephens to learn more.
Same here, I’ve been on the keto diet for a year or so and was surprised by that “worst diet because it’s overly restrictive” thing too, because I really don’t find it to be that hard. I’m not sure I’d recommend the keto diet for normal folks, who I’ll loosely define as people who can eat a bagel without their blood glucose levels spiking to 200, but I’ve found it to be a pretty easy way to manage my blood sugar and avoid insulin.
I suppose sustainble here is meant is sense of a long term food intake. Although I do not think one side restrictive intake is sustainable but thats opinions. What I have issue with is calling meat eating diet sustainble in 2018 when we have evidence and facts that meat industry is the most damaging industry to this planet. Keep your diet opinions but drop the sustainability pat on the back. Please.
I just see him as Chris Traeger. “my body is finely tuned – like a microchip” and “the world’s my gymnasium, Ron!” “I could literally faint if I didn’t have impeccable blood pressure!”
LOL same here! I even read the name of this article in Chris Traeger’s voice..
The episode where he was sick. “Stop…pooping!!” Cracks me up every time!!
That flu episode made me a fan of his on that show. I wasn’t thrilled when he first joined the cast, but that changed for me.
That is one of my all time favorite tv episodes across all tv shows. That whole episode was gold – I have cried laughing so hard. Stop. POOPING!!! Was when I really realized I was a P&R fan. And when Lesley was stealing medicine and talking about the chamber of secrets was amazing as well.
CHRIS TRAGGER! I miss parks and rec so much! The other day I binge watched Knope 2012 with Bobby Newport and I swear is like Amy Poheler could see the future….
Eliminating entire food groups from your diet isn’t healthy. Moderation is the key to everything.
+1
I try to eat lower carb for the majority of my meals and find that even if I have an indulgence here or there, I’m able to continue feeling good and losing weight. But I am at my best on a lower carb diet. My mind feels so much clearer, I’m not as tired and my GI issues have improved.
Also, I’ve followed a very close Whole 30 diet for over 2 years and I’ve never felt better. I added wine and half and half for my coffee but that is it. Whole 30 was the only thing that help loose the baby weight (30+lbs!!)
Great clip. I own this movie – try to see it if you can. Matt Damon does camp very well.
Atkins is the only way for me. It keeps me lean and alert. If you don’t over do the fats and have fibre in the mornings – it is sustainable
Remember when Rob Lowe was involved in a sex scandal over a videotape of him having sex with a 16-year-old girl he met in a nightclub? Yeah, fun times. I love bringing that up every time Lowe gets mentioned.
Ok, I was scrolling down these comments like “Huhh? Since when do we like Rob Lowe’s predator ass?”
Thank you for reminding everyone of this.
Haha!
Ok I get where you’re coming from, however…
1. The girl was in a 21+ bar and said she was 18.
2. He quit drinking and drugs and went to rehab soon afterwards.
3. He’s been sober since the mid-80s and completely turned his life around.
Im sure you are right, but just to note a few years ago he made a sustained campaign to seduce a family friend (of mine) in Santa Barbara. His friends were even in in it. She was in her 20s though so not scandalous in the same way.
@Birdix: Oooh, good gossip!
He was in his early 20s (not that much of an age difference) and the girl was above the age of consent. Not a predator imo.
I’m in the beginning of my second round of Whole 30. I don’t typically eat a lot of sugar, so the carb cutting is what is tough for me. I run quite a bit but I still always seem to have a ‘muffin top’, well, let me tell you, it is all from breads/chips/pancakes etc… Both times that I have participated in the Whole 30 my stomach has shrank noticeably! I’m only on day 5 on this one and I already can tell my stomach is flatter. Carbs are so terrible for you (bad ones, that is). If you can just eat things like pancakes etc..in moderation, say once a week then you should be fine, but I have zero self-control! I don’t have to rely on my looks/body either for a job like Rob Lowe though…that would be a game changer.
Whole 30 has changed the way I eat and my unhealthy food habits. I am doing a Whole 14 right now to detox from the holidays. It is amazing how much better you look and feel when cutting carbs!
Whenever a celebrity starts talking about a diet that they endorse, my eyes start glazing over.
His family is so gorgeous!
A nutritionist recently talked to us about how my dad should eat. He can’t remember it so we have to. Anyway, she was so nice and right from the start said “I don’t believe in rules, only in guidelines.” And if there would be rules for anyone, it’s my dad (although at this point I say eat whatever you want).
Different things work for different people. I like what he says about his overall lifestyle.
So we’re not going to talk about how tweaked his face looks?
Good call! Let’s discuss!
He was having such good work done for a long time – it was subtle maintenance. But he’s crossed the line into looking tweaked.
And Rob Lowe lost it for me when it came out that the Parks & Rev crew didn’t really enjoy working with him, and he still insisted on submitting himself as “Best Actor” for all of the awards even though he was clearly a supporting part of the ensemble.
What amazed me about that is he did it for the first season he was in, the one where he only shows up in the last two episodes! Even putting himself forward for the supporting categories would have been a real stretch, but to put himself forward as the lead? Insane.
Also he always acted like he was doing the other actors a big favour submitting as a lead actor, like there was no way any of them would ever get a nomination in the supporting category over him. The ego on display there was astonishing.
Rob Lowe looks good! I was and am a fan of The Outsiders and I loved everyone in the movie especially Tommy Howell but Rob back then was too pretty I still liked him but never my full cup of tea but it turns out his good looks outlasted all of them because he looks dam good. And he’s seems the only one that’s worked consistently and still a house hold name.
Adkins is the only eating plan I’ve used that reliably leads me to lose weight, but honestly I can’t give up carbs so I’ve never been able to stay on it hard-core for very long. I did it for a few months last year and lost 13 lbs, which I still haven’t gained back because I’ve tried to at least be mindful of which carbs I eat (whole grains etc, cutting out a lot of candy).
After reducing dairy intake, I am trying to go gluten free. Super hard since I love soft buns, toast, naans, pratas and cake. Worst is that soy sauce is in a lot of Asian cooking (especially Chinese fare). I do feel less bloated. I don’t weigh myself because this isn’t for weight loss, but I feel better stomach wise.
Are you going gluten free for health reasons or just to lose weight?
For health reasons because I am thin but I find myself getting bloated and fatigued as I enter my past 35 stage. It could be anything so I am just trying to cut down gluten and dairy first. I would like to see if my skin improves. As mentioned, I don’t weigh myself so I don’t know if I really lost weight. For sugar, I cut down on sugared drinks and juices. I cannot give up white rice though so that’s my carb lol.
Gluten itself is fine for most folks (true gluten allergies like celiac are actually an auto-immune disease). However, refined, processed white flour is not the greatest thing in the world. If you’re eating a ton of bread & cake, that’s more likely the culprit than the gluten contained in them. Eat more veggies, try whole grain “real” food. You’ll be amazed how quickly you de-bloat.
Thanks Bridget for the tips, I’m a work in progress trying to figure out my body, and completely agree especially on the refined processed white flour. Am eating more veggies too and will not rule out the ‘real’ whole grains.
Alexandria, have you tried coconut aminos as a substitute for soy sauce? They’re not EXACTLY the same but I found them to be a very very very good substitute. I even would bring them to sushi restaurants when I was on a more restrictive diet, and dip my edamame in that! (I had packets, so it wasn’t a health code violation; or I’d just get take out sushi.)
Hi Jay thanks! I am intending to buy gluten free soy sauce for sushi, problem is there is soy sauce in most Chinese fare outside (my staple is Malay food though). Since I am not celiac, my option is to request for soy sauce to be skipped if possible. In Singapore, food allergy education especially on cross contamination, is quite low, even for high end establishments. So I do feel sorry for the celiacs here especially the kids. Even in healthcare, the community claims that their gluten allergy or intolerance is largely diagnosed as IBS first by doctors here. Suffice to say, I found trying to go gluten free interesting so far hahah…
rob lowe at 53 is better looking than both of his young sons. ouch.
Not being mean, but I was just thinking the same thing. I have a few spectacularly attractive friends of similar age whose kids are not nearly as attractive as the parents. It happens. I suppose its the same for great talent – the chance of a kid inheriting and capitalizing on superb athleticism or intellectual capacity is not as high as genetics alone might suggest.
His sons go to Stanford and Duke. I find that attractive.
Thank you for saying this lol. They did NOT get his good looks! They look old.
My blood sugar has been a little high so I’m cutting back on flour and sugar, but my doctor is very practical and says no “diets” just a better lifestyle.
My best friend lost 50 lbs THREE different times on Atkins…sadly, she’s gained back 60 or more each time she goes off the diet. It’s unsustainable, especially if you have a family to cook for.
Atkins is the only diet I’ve ever been on (to get rid of the quit smoking weight I had gained). I tend to run towards the spectrum of “carnivore” anyways, but I found it remarkably easy to do. No calorie counting, no hunger. But the first 3 days are basically a “sugar detox” and that bit was way worse than quitting smoking.
Maintaining it wasn’t that hard, but I don’t use pre-prepared/frozen foods, sauces, salad dressings etc. I imagine that if you do, you’d end up in difficulty because most of them are laden with sugar. You can do all sorts of great recipes but it’s time consuming to make everything from scratch and not everyone has the time.
