Charlize Theron stars in the ensemble comedy/drama Gringo, which is all about marijuana and the precarious legal/illegal quagmire that the marijuana industry now faces. Charlize seems to enjoy promoting this movie because it’s giving her a chance to talk about how much she used to love to wake-and-bake, and how she was a heavy pot-smoker for eight years of her adult life. Charlize was on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night and she once again talked about how she just had to stop smoking pot because her “chemistry” changed, but that now she does edibles for her insomnia. And her mom was the one to buy the edibles for her!
Charlize told Kimmel:
“I have really bad sleep [patterns] and so does my mom. We do take sleep medication and I was saying to her, ‘Maybe we should try a sleeping strain, something that could help us with sleep.’ I really thought I would be the responsible one to have to go and get that. Last week she showed up at my house, literally drove in her little tennis outfit and brought me a little container and just left it on my kitchen table. She was like, ‘So I got some blueberry covered chocolate ones but if you want it faster acting you should go for the mints those you suck and it works faster.’ I assumed because she was in a tennis outfit she had scored with one young tennis friend. Because she plays tennis with these really cool young girls.”
However, it wasn’t until the Los Angeles premiere of Gringo on Tuesday that Theron learned where her mom really got the edibles from.
“She said, ‘I went to the store by myself,’ ” Theron revealed, as marijuana is now legal in California. “I have this image of her in the store. She’s just not this kind of person and buying marijuana she had like a full experience.”
So how are their sleeping patterns now? “It totally works, it’s amazing,” she said of marijuana, adding of her mom as her “dealer”: “You can’t have her, she’s all mine.”
Charlize’s mom is so cool. I’m pretty sure that her mom either lives with her or lives, like, next door to Charlize, and now I can’t help but picture Charlize and her mom getting high together. Sigh… can anyone go into those pot dispensaries in California now? You don’t even need a prescription? You guys are so lucky.

Sleep is so precious, if this helps I’m all for it!!!
Doesn’t she have at least one small child? My only concern is that if her mom just leaves candy edibles on the kitchen table for her to find, one of the kids could find it first.
I’m pretty sure it’s like having any kind of medication. Most people don’t just leave pills and stuff lying around when they have kids.
Okay. I am not a drug user, LOL, but I get migraines a few times a year. I also get small spells of insomnia and refuse to take drugs for it. I also have post pardon anxiety with both pregnancies. I swear my life isn’t miserable as this post seems(BAHAH), but we all have our issues and I just don’t want to take pills for every issue. My drug of choice is caffeine, always! Often don’t take medications/drugs because they don’t seem to work and the side effects suck ass. I do not live in Cali. I keep hearing about weed gummies and all the amazing ness of them for anxiety, migraines and now sleep issues. Why do I not live in Cali?!?!?!?! Cali people, can you really just walk in and buy them?
California here. Yes, you can just go in now, but it wasn’t terribly hard before. It was pretty easy to find a local doc to get your letter/certificate, but you did have to renew each year.
I’m pretty much a novice, have used for sleep a few times, with mixed results. The shops ARE really cool, the employees super helpful, and there is SO much to choose from. Sigh, I just wish it agreed with me more.
Yes we can! You need to be entered into a database first where your drivers license is validated and you have to be 21.
I have (when much younger) experimented w a variety of drugs, even to a self destructive and/or addictive extent, but I have *never* liked marijuana. The only time I tried it, I had such terrifying hallucinations that I never used it again. I’m scared of weed now. I’m bipolar with a propensity for psychosis, so I’ve never even taken it for severe pain, though one of my doctor suggests it. I wish I had a drug of some sort that I could healthily use for my anxiety, insomnia, and for depression, the way so many people use marijuana–but I used to abuse both opiates and alcohol, which are the only drugs that have ever “worked.” I try hard to not do any “recreational” drugs at all, and take klonopin only for sleep.
Just your ID and most don’t take credit card.
I’ve tried once and that was on election Day when Bush won his 2nd term. It was supposed to be “try it, you gonna have a wild imagination but nothing dangerous and no you won’t sleep”..and I end up..sleeping for 9 hours.
2nd time and again “No this one won’t make you sleep. Just relax”. Beforehand we read some Sci-fi books to get us into vivid mode and Miss over here slept for another 9 hours..
That was my 2 experiences and I have to say It felt good to sleep like a dead volcano.
LMAO! Yes, to sleep like a dead volcano!
Lordy, I wish I had the option to buy some of this herbal sleep medication over the counter — it’s a blessing for me due to fibromyalgia. Unfortunately, I can’t smoke (I never have, but have lung damage due to pneumonia) and we don’t have delivery systems like lollipops or those goodies Charlize’s mom nabbed. Damn.
My vocal coach said to me “we breath in oxygen and we breath out carbon” so we have to rewire our way of breathing and I do it with meditation before going to bed.
Yes, you can just walk in and buy them. Before 2018, you would have needed a medical card (but those were easy to get).
I live in Canada and recently got my weed card. When I went to meet the doctor the room was so packed the line-up was out the door. We now have Banook drops for mild pain and insomnia and a spray for the same. We order online and product is delivered right to our door. My sore back no longer keeps me awake all night.
I’m in Canada too and I just walk into the dispensaries, no pot card.
A friend of mine used to grow his own and, when he trimmed his plants, he’d take the cuttings and mix them up with Sara Lee cookie mix and bake. Good stuff, fantastic sleeps were had and you wake up liquid in the bed. My mother – 70 – partook as well and more fantastic sleeps were had.
If i casually mention again about Charlize longtime rumors regarding her love for the white powder will the woman who was so invested and took it so personal that insulted me and back to my 5th lineage of ancestors come back and slash a weird rant on me again like she did on a past post? LOL
lol I missed the comments war you’re referencing, I’m afraid to look. But tbh, I don’t really care if Charlize is a recreational coke user– a lot of people in that world are. The potential for addiction is there but many use it without getting addicted. Or do you know something about her coke use getting out of hand?
exactly. I think many people in showbiz (and basically every other industries tbh) manages to become functioning addicts and in some cases, the luckiest ones who doesn’t have the addictive gene, they could use it recreationally for years. Basically every insider story, every biography authorized or not, or autobiography that’s written about old and current Hollywood will include the lines and lines of the “good stuff” available at every party big or small. And no, I don’t have first hand knowledge, I’m just an old gossiper so all I know is that when gossip is consistent and recurring over the years it might be some true to it. And about Charlize it has been even before her Oscar win.
I dunno, there doesn’t seem to be any basis for this. I mean beyond thinking that most people in Hollywood probably do coke at some point?
I know she’s said she’ll try anything once before, but it seems unlikely she’s a regular coke user given she’s not only a business owner, producer, charity owner, full time actor and mom (and seems to be doing all those things pretty efficiently at once), but she’s at the point in her life you’d expect a long time user to really start looking wrecked in some way. She hasn’t got a messed up septum, tracks on her arms or any of the other physical signs, and she’s never had any occasions where she’s acted out high in public or in front of paps either.
Having known a couple of coke addicts myself, I can tell you you do not get to 42 and get to look like that if you’ve been a regular user for years. So I just have a hard time believing she does that. She’s just never seemed much of a party girl and is too well adjusted with a normal family. *shrug*
I don’t even know if it would work for me but I am very jealous of everyone I’m Cali. The side effects of all the pills most doctors push is worse than the thing the pill is treating, in my case so I always say ‘no thanks’.
I have Ambien when needed. But I’ve found that one Advil PM caplet does the trick for me. I get drowsy and sleep straight through.
I’ve just quit smoking. After years of “fun buzz”, I was getting almost panic attacks. Then I tried a different strain, which worked … but it wasn’t silly fun anymore. I do find both strains knock me out (eventually), but I never feel really rested. So I’m just toughing it out with not smoking and have a better sleep rhythm back now. But in menopause, you don’t really sleep that well anymore. I’m afraid to try edibles. Although I have friends who enjoy them.
Pittsburgh has legalized medicinal Marijuana.
The co-pay is pricey, and it’s not covered by insurance (because how would pharmaceutical companies benefit from prescribed herbs) but Il est si bon!
I love it when celebrities – especially foreign-born ones – discuss illegal drug use like it is no big deal. Despite the changes to California state law, marijuana is still illegal under federal law. And illicit drug use, whether it results in criminal charges or not, can really screw a person over immigration-wise. Even if Charlize and her mother are naturalized U.S. citizens, they would be smart to shut up and stop talking about her earlier drug use. If the government ever determined that Charlize used illegal drugs and/or lied about her drug use prior to becoming a U.S. citizen, she could easily find herself in denaturalization and deportation proceedings.
I was going to say I don’t see anyone deporting Theron any time soon, but given how much Trump hates Hollywood, I wouldn’t put my bets down on anything anymore.
If I remember rightly, Charlize’s mom used to live with her, then Charlize moved and she bought her mom a new house 10 minutes down the road from her. Which is actually really damn sweet, especially when you consider that her mom was made homeless 25 years ago after her abusive husband bankrupted her. The story has a happy ending.
