Will.i.am has issued a thoughtful and measured statement about the attack on Perez Hilton outside a Toronto Club over the weekend, allegedly by Polo Molina, the manager of Will’s band The Black Eyed Peas. Perez was quick to cry victim after the incident, in which he was he was punched in the face by a bystander after he called Will the anti-gay f-word. In contrast, Will.i.am put out two very reasonable video blogs explaining his role in the situation. He claims he simply asked Perez to be more respectful of his band and his friend Fergie, and that he was treated to the f-word for it. Will said that he had no role in the attack on Perez and that it was misleading for Perez to tweet that he was responsible.
In response to all the media coverage of the incident, Will.i.am has issued a very straightforward statement condemning both violence and verbal attacks. Again, he is coming across as the more astute party. Compare Will’s simple statement, below, to Perez’s long non-apology in which he continues to play the victim:
I will not continue to comment specifically on the incident that happened in Toronto last weekend… But I would hate for my silence to be misconstrued… I do not condone harassment or violence of any kind…
No one deserves physical abuse…
And no one deserves verbal abuse…
No one deserves that…Everyone needs to be respected…
And no ones name should be slandered in the name of hate and disrespect…
And fyi…”not every black man is a thug”…As far as character allegations made against myself,
The members of the Black Eyed Peas,
And members of our management…
I believe that the truth will speak for itself once the details of the events are fully presented.Hateful slurs…
Racial or gay should not be used as verbal weapons to provoke violence…Let us all learn from the events that happened in Toronto…
That situation has already taken valuable time, energy,
And attention away from more important,
And in some cases, devastating issues happening in our world.
Thank you…

Perez justified calling Will a f*g by saying “I made the split second decision that I was going to say the worst possible thing that thug would ever want to hear.” The word “thug” is considered by many people to be a racist term. What’s more is that Perez implied that “thugs” are necessarily homophobic.
Perez is predictably suing the manager of the Black Eyed Peas for hitting him in the eye several times. He’s asking for over $25,000. Of course he never should have been hit, but I hope he doesn’t get a dime and incurs significant legal fees:
The celebrity blogger, whose real name is Mario Lavandeira, sued the Peas’ road manager in Los Angeles for battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress. He is seeking unspecified damages of more than $25,000.
The suit states Hilton is seeking to protect his rights to free speech and claims Polo Molina attacked him because he made critical comments about the Black Eyed Peas’ new album. Molina was arrested in Toronto early Monday after he allegedly punched Hilton following a heated argument between the blogger and Black Eyed Peas leader will.i.am.
An e-mail sent to the group’s publicist was not immediately returned Wednesday. Molina is due to appear in court Aug. 5.
“Perez Hilton was assaulted by the band’s road manager because he would not agree to stop writing about the Black Eyed Peas on his Web site Perezhilton.com,” Bryan Freedman, Hilton’s lawyer, said in a statement. “Whether you love Perez or hate him, he is entitled to his freedom of speech without fear of physical violence. This lawsuit will make the statement that violence is never the answer.”
The lawsuit details the events leading up to Molina’s alleged attack on the blogger.
The complaint states Black Eyed Peas vocalist Fergie approached Hilton on Saturday and asked why he was writing “mean” things about her and the group. Hilton replied that he was “simply being honest and truthful about his opinions of them,” according to the lawsuit.
On Sunday, Hilton claims he was pushed by an unidentified member of the Black Eyed Peas’ entourage, who “slammed his shoulder into Hilton’s shoulder and thereafter pushed him.”
The lawsuit claims Fergie again approached him at an afterparty for the MuchMusic Video Awards on Sunday night and that his argument with will.i.am happened at another party. The lawsuit claims the blogger was trying to leave that party when Molina punched him at least three times.
“Lavandeira sustained injury to his eye and was bleeding as a result of this violent and malicious attack,” the lawsuit claims.
His damage claims include medical costs and damages due to “humiliation, mental anguish, and emotional and physical distress.” The lawsuit also claims that Molina is on probation in California for a drunken driving conviction under his real name, Liborio Molina.

In his statement following the attack Perez expressed outrage that some suggested he “had it coming,” asking “Would they have said the same thing if I was a woman?” He also brought up the brutal beating of Rihanna while being interviewed on a Toronto radio station (link to audio) and said he was always sympathetic to her on his blog, as if that had anything to do with getting beat up outside a bar for hurling a slur at someone. There is very little comparison between the two, in my opinion. The guy was talking smack and he got punched for it. As Kelly Clarkson said “I don’t think anyone should be punched and I’m not about violence but I see why someone would do it.”

obviously Perez is getting a backlash from the public being such a drama queen….he’s just suing to save his a$$…you’re going down Perez!
But here’s the thing, no matter how much we dislike somebody for drawing urine and male body parts on people, they don’t deserve to get punched. We can understand why somebody would punch they guy, yes, but it doesn’t make it right.
We can’t just be okay with laws and fair treatment of human beings for people we like or respect.
I am not defending Perez’ professional choices or his word choices (both of the terms he chose to refer to the manager as are hurtful) I am merely pointing out nobody deserves to get beaten up.
actually, perez referred to will as a thug and a f****t. as will pointed out he doesn’t condone violence and verbal abuse. that’s why this statement gets a lot of support as opposed to perez’s non-apology from the other day.
while violence is not the answer, it happens. different people will have different reactions, and perez has been a verbal abuser for years now. he makes money out of being hateful. children are not excluded from his cruelty. at some point, somebody will react in some form or another. it’s sad that it had to come to this, but it really isn’t surprising.
I would just like to state that I am loving the name Polo. I haven’t been able to stomach Perez’s site for several years & feel kind of dirty having ever clicked on it at all. His current negative attention whoring reminds me of the pix of Paris Hilton crying hysterically when they came to take her to jail. When the inner ugliness manifests on the outside.
I agree – if you are constantly baiting and baiting, somebody’s gonna bite sooner or later, and we all hope this is a lesson mario the baiter might have learned. Let’s pretend, anyway, that he might be self-reflective the next time he feels the urge. Let’s just pretend.
If he doesn’t, he’s likely to get another whack to the head. This is what happens, it’s not right, but this IS what happens to f#ckwads that bait.
Perez is pathetic. I’m a lawyer and I despise it when people file baseless, senseless lawsuits like this one. I hope it gets dismissed and Perez is assessed all of the fines the other side incurs.
Perez isn’t a journalist, and this is not about free speech. Perez never reports news any more, it’s all name calling, slanderous statements about how ugly someone is (Rumer Willis) or fat someone else is, or calling out gay people. Perez that isn’t free speech, it is FIFTH GRADE ANTICS! And for a gay man to use the word “faggot” as an insult, that is just vile.
I used to visit his site all the time -back when it was pagesixsixsix.com when he actually reported news, but never any more. After this “lawsuit” I will never, ever visit that site again.
And another thing – remember when Perez and Samantha Ronson were in litigation over the nasty things he wrote about her? Now we all know Perez went way beyond reporting gossip, he taunted her, called her names like a second grader, drew nasty things on her pictures, etc. That is NOT FREE SPEECH. It makes me so angry when people manipulate the laws and the court system like this man does. Then Perez won that lawsuit (Sam’s suit was dismissed), and he gloated about it on his website? That kind of behavior is what I am talking about – no tact, no integrity, no respect, and just immature school-kid behavior.
I always thought will.i.am was a grown up. His conduct through this incident has been admirable. Unfortunately the attention being paid to this situation is exactly what Perez Hilton wants. He is a fame-wh*re,no different than Heidi, Spencer, Paris and all the rest. None of them is going away any time soon.
His lawsuit is a publicity stunt. His lawyer also represents Sam Lufti in his suit against Britney and her family.
I’m embarrassed to say I have been to Perez’s site a number of times, but I quit going because of (1) his treatment of Miley Cyrus — 30 year old man calling a 15 year old a wh*re, etc. and (2) his incessantly uninformed blogging about political issues during the 2008 campaign.
Perez had it coming.
What happened to Perez couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy…
I hope the lawsuit gets dismissed and he pays Polo’s legal fees. 😀
Now that’s a classy statement from Will.i.am. I’m loving that guy more and more.
Madelyn – I’m so glad you brought that up about the SamRo lawsuit. I do recall him gloating about the whole thing. I also hate it when people like that contort the laws to try to justify vile behaviour. His actions were not about free speech.
This just irks me so much because we all know how some gay people ARE seriously attacked and beaten in the true form of the word, without any verbal instigation on their part. And here this guy is trying to get sympathy for being a prick and instigating a fight. Just disgusting.
Whatever. I don’t feel the least bit sorry for this POS.
It angers me that Perez is taking the moral high road now after drawing penises on pictures of celebrities and calling people and kid stars whores, sluts, fugly etc. He is playing the victim and it angers him that he can’t get a single sympathy from people that’s why he needs to release his non-apology apology and donate some filthy cash to a gay organization because he has offended them.
So basically, what Perez is saying is that it is LEGAL for him to kill people, make them suffer with intense humiliation, abuse children, kick people in the guts, and shove people around because he is not physically touching them. It’s not his problem those said people can’t take his opinion, but he is taking his opinion everywhere. But of course, it is illegal for someone to react on his words.
Some twisted law he follows.
What I’m mad at Will.i.am about is that he needed to diffuse the situation better with the bodyguard.
Now we have had to endure the wrath of Perez Hilton who is the dumbest guy on earth to think he didn’t deserve his head whacking after he harasses celebrities with his childlike penis and urine drawings. It’s like Satan has been released to the universe with all this controversy.
May God help us all get through this and perhaps if we ignore Perez, he will go down to the bowels of hell where he belongs for now.
Yup, Perez is getting it good. He certainly deserves it. Someone needed to bring him down.
By the way, where are his so-called friends? Those who paid him to get positive comments on his website? (Calling Paris Hilton, Speidi and Lady GaGa…)
Guess he really doesn’t have any. No one is coming to his defense now.
Perez new “apology”. I hope he means this, but for some reason I think he realized how serious people were about boycotting him and he realized he’d loose the “lifestyle” he’s gained from his blogging. But for what it’s worth here it is for the people who don’t want to click over. (CB I hope this is okay to put here.) Also GIGOHEAD – excellent point; Will could have tried to difuse the situation with Polo.

I’m Sorry
Filed under: Personally Perez > Sad Sad
“People make mistakes. I have made many in my life, but this past week I have made more than I can count on one hand.
I am sorry. And I mean it. No one is forcing me to write this. I am not feeling pressured to say this. I am speaking out because I realize that the last few days have been more hurtful to me – and many others – than the repeated blows I suffered to my head in Toronto this past weekend.
I have been filled with incredible sadness and regret.
I am sorry that any good work I have done for promoting equality may be tainted by me reclaiming a hurtful word – that’s been personally used against me and the gay community – to hurt someone that was verbally attacking me. It was stupid.
Apologizing for me is not easy. Writing this was not easy. Life is not easy. But everything happens for a reason and I will take away a lot of valuable lessons from this experience.
Violence is never the answer. Never.
Victims should not be mocked.
The “F” word will never be uttered from my lips again. Just as others use the “N” word to insult and hurt – or as part of their everyday speech – I challenge them to remove it from their vocabulary as well.
Hindsight is always 20/20, they say. I should have been the bigger man and walked away from an unfortunate situation. Instead, I chose – in a very misguided way – to stand up for myself and only made things worse by how I – under pressure, anger and extreme emotion – handled the situation.
I am sorry.
I am NOT apologizing to GLAAD. I could care less about them, my former employers.
I am apologizing to the gay community, to anyone who was hurt by my choice of words, and to all the people who have ever emailed me to thank me for all that I have done to fight for gay rights over the last few years.
I have reached out to Isaiah Washington, someone I incorrectly labeled a homophobe in the past, despite his own public statements that he was not.
I will be donating any money collected from my lawsuit against Polo Molina, road manager for the Black Eyed Peas, to the Matthew Shepard Foundation.
And I will continue to speak out for equality and support the great work done by LGBT organizations, such as LAMBDA Legal and HRC.
Sincerely,
Perez”
This guy makes “US” gays look bad. It’s fun to gossip but when it’s turned on people with an agenda to hurt, THAT is abuse…you know Perez, You don’t have to HIT to hurt.
Isn’t there someway you could try to be a better person???
Madelyn Rose, thank you for your thoughts on the free speech and Perez. I agree, he is a spiteful and immature bully. But I am not sure that the court will see it that way. We have thousands of hate mongering websites online, those that promote racism, sexism and intolerance and yet the courts do not regulate them. There are pamphlets and books too that promote hatred yet we do not see our jails filled with neo nazis and radical extremists who have published or disseminated hate speech. Like you, I don’t like Perez or visit his website.
wow–how does that apology rate as sincere? “I am sorry that any good work I have done for promoting equality may be tainted by me reclaiming a hurtful word – that’s been personally used against me and the gay community – to hurt someone that was verbally attacking me.”
He manages to mention his “good work” and how he has been attacked in his “apology”. That’s not an apology. That’s playing martyr.
I don’t understand why people sue over everything these days… he got punched because he talked crap about someone. I would have punched him too if he called me those things.
I’m just really disgusted that Perez goes on about how he is helping people ‘come out’ and is going all this positive work for the homosexual community… and then turns around and uses the most offensive term he could? Shameful.
His rights as an American don’t really mean much in Canada. Sure we have freedom of speech up here but we could lie and tell him we don’t.
Hang on a second — so Perez was hit from behind, but he ended up with a bruised eye.
First it was Will who hit him — then the manager — and now he was “hit from behind”. well which is it?
@mark, EXACTLY! hateful words can inflict as much pain as a punch to the face.
@jamie:
I agree with you. Perez does not “help” people come out. He bullies him to do so like it was the worst thing. GLAAD (or some other organization) doesn’t even approve of this. I remember them saying that they want people to come out in their own time, because, like it or not, it’s still a hateful world out there. Some people still do not take it kindly to people’s career if they are gay.
What Perez does is bully them and call them shameful for not admitting. It’s not “helping” them. He just wants to be the one who says his gaydar helped him identify them. Instead of sympathizing with them for hiding their true identity, he calls them names and condemn for doing so.
So, what again are those “good works” he has done?
