I’ve been happily ignoring Roseanne. I don’t even know what night it comes on? Tuesday, maybe? It comes on ABC and it’s very controversial, as we’ve discussed several times. The Deplorables have made this their latest culture war, and millions of white Trump voters are tuning in every week to “see themselves” on-screen. Beyond the fact that Roseanne Barr can’t form ONE coherent argument for why she voted for Donald Trump, it seems like we should lower our expectations across the board for how she and her character deal with other cultural issues. Perhaps it would be too much to expect that part of the show wouldn’t include Roseanne and Dan sleeping through and then mocking TV shows about marginalized communities? In the latest episode, this happened:
Roseanne has ruffled feathers once again. During the Tuesday, April 3, episode, a joke was made that raised a lot of eyebrows. After falling asleep in front of the TV, Roseanne (Roseanne Barr) and Dan (John Goodman) awoke to realize they slept for hours.
“We slept from Wheel to Kimmel,” Roseanne tells her husband. Dan responds, “We missed all the shows about black and Asian families.” However, it was her response that upset many: “They’re just like us. There, now you’re all caught up.” The assumption was that the shows referenced were ABC’s sitcoms Black-ish and Fresh Off the Boat.
Oof. Again, I’m so glad I’m not even wasting my time on this dumb show. But let’s check in with Taiwanese-American actor Kelvin Yu for a good take on why this sh-t is problematic AF. From his Twitter:
Here’s why the Roseanne joke about “missing all the shows about Black and Asian families” matters. At the very least, it’s reductive and belittling, as if to say those shows are nothing more than “Black” and “Asian” in their existence.
But the real kicker is when Roseanne says: “They’re just like us. There, now you’re all caught up.” Which implies that the point of any show about a minority family is simply to normalize them. That’s it. The stories, the humor, the characters… not important.
Then you take ALLLLLL of that and put it in the mouth of an avowed Trump supporter (not the actress–the CHARACTER of Roseanne) and you have one stinky little sh-t sandwich of a joke that ABC allowed to be served in their own restaurant. It’s a big deal.
Do I think the characters Roseanne and Dan watch Blackish or Fresh Off The Boat? Of course not. Do I think they’d say something PC about them? Probably not. But the point is, they didn’t HAVE to say ANYTHING. They didn’t have to write that joke at all. It’s not even a joke.
Consider what exactly the audience is laughing at. What exactly is the punchline here? I’ll tell you what it is: it’s an endorsement of dismissiveness and disregard. It’s a familiarity and comfort with the culture of objectifying and demeaning people of color.
Keep in mind, ABC was all too willing to bar Kenya Barris from airing an episode about kneeling during the nat’l anthem because of a fear it would be divisive and alienating. Blackish is one of only a handful of shows about Black families on the air.
Fresh Off The Boat is the ONLY show about an Asian American family. Meanwhile, Roseanne is currently being touted as the refreshing voice of an underrepresented group (conservative women).
Here’s my point: they rebooted a beloved 90s sitcom & updated the main character to be a Trump voter under the pretense that it was a realistic portrayal of the the white working class. Then in ep 2, they depict her LITERALLY SLEEPING through stories about people of color.
I’m not saying it’s inaccurate to have her do this. I actually think it’s TOO accurate (and also not that funny?). Maybe next week, Dan and Roseanne explain to their grandchildren that Santa and Sandy Hook are both fake and we can all just laugh and laugh.
I agree with Yu. The criticism is absolutely that it’s “too accurate.” It’s a reminder that Disney/ABC is not as woke as they want you to believe: the same network that greenlighted Blackish and Fresh Off the Boat is the same network that normalizes Roseanne Barr’s fascistic, deplorable and racist politics. It’s the dismissiveness of the “joke” that really gets me, because it goes part and parcel with the real feelings of Trump voters towards minorities and marginalized communities: that they don’t “deserve” any specific recognition, and why even make shows to normalize those families?

I didn’t know that being “Like Us” was somehow the default, anything other than that is abnormal and to be dismissed. Screw you Roseanne!

He may be too young to remember when black and Asian characters were always the only one of their ethnicity in the scene (and often were never there at all except in an occasional stereotypical role) and how long it took before they were at least full-fledged characters. It was remarkable when two characters of the same non-white ethnicity began to be acceptable in otherwise overwhelmingly pale shows.
The change to shows where most or all of the characters are of a non-white ethnicity was huge. It generally happened in the beginning only when the main character was very famous already. Asians in particular have remained practically invisible except as individual exceptions until relatively recently. Now even children’s cartoons are multiethnic. The old ones are not, and the depictions of an occasional black or Asian are extremely cringey and disturbing. Cosby’s cartoon series (one based on his Fat Albert character from his standup, another based on himself as a small child allegedly) were exceptions.
I don’t know the exact timeline, although the Cosby show (the Huxtable family) might have been the important breakthrough. Other famous comedians headed up others. But in the mid-20th century, they didn’t seem to exist.
So like it or not, one message that is given by such shows by their very existence to white viewers in particular (many of whom in non-urban areas still may never have seen anyone black or Asian in the flesh or at least don’t know them personally) is that they are “just like us”. That doesn’t mean the shows aren’t full of good drama, good comedy, and good characters on their own. Consider that message as an incidental side effect. And it obviously doesn’t magically turn us into a non-racist country. But as someone who has watched entirely too much tv since the early 1950s – the presence of non-white characters on tv has changed considerably.
Trump resonates with his racism and xenophobia in non-urban areas especially for a reason. It may be hard for people who live in bigger cities to realize this, but there really are white people who live and work exclusively with whites and also never see a foreigner. They have never heard anything but English, and the very sound of another language may be disturbing to them. They may very well also have contact with a very limited number of European ethnicities and fear the others the same way they fear non-whites.
Even if they had a lot of contact in cities, they still often had trouble seeing the others as “just like us” especially since they tended to live in mono-ethnic neighborhoods. When my mother was young, a mixed marriage was between an Irish Catholic and an Italian Catholic – the assumption was that it would never work because they were culturally too different. My mother lived in an unusually mixed neighborhood of another sort – all white, but her friends and neighbors were Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish. That was huge back then also.
Sounds like a reboot of how she alienated the public years ago. Only this time, she sped up the process.

Yes, I think Roseanne Barr’s basic unlikeability, which was transferred to the originally likeable character Roseanne Conner as Roseanne Barr became richer and more powerful, was a major problem for the original show. She starts the new show with that unlikeability of the character and her real life obnoxiousness is spread quickly by her participation in social media.
She doesn’t look that “salt of the earth” on the show anymore. Her hair is too coiffed and as several reviewers have said, someone with a limited skincare budget would’ve had trouble aging that gracefully.
Go away, Roseanne.

Diane? I think she’s hilarious personally and love her rivalry with Charlie. I have an issue with Dre constantly belittling Jr. since he’s the parent and that’s his teenage son. It can get grating after awhile, especially since Jr.’s a pretty great kid.
That really bothers me, too! It seems to have really come out this season, not so much last year. I know they played up the “Daddy’s Girl” with the older daughter, but where did the Junior-hatred/bashing come from? All of a sudden this year, we get this and it is really a WTF situation in an otherwise funny show.
They have toned down a lot of the meanness in Diane, the youngest daughter this season. I noticed it and found it uncomfortable as well so I am glad they did this. It seemed like she was bullying her twin brother a lot.
It has always amazed me in comedy shows how parents who seem very nice have children who are obviously abusive to their siblings – and the nice parents don’t step in to insist that the bullying stop. My mother was like that, too, she thought that if she ignored conflict it would magically go away.
Our parents teach us how to use a toilet, how to tie our shoes, how to swim, how to drive a car – but so many think the kids will just “work it out” all by themselves when dealing with conflict and bullying within the home as well as outside it. It’s not good for either the bully or the bullied and is a major parental fail.
My God he explained that so perfectly and succinctly. Jokes like those are why I’ll never watch the show, regardless of how many people tell me it’s funny or to give it a chance. Some liberals seem to think it’s woke to give the show a chance or something…it’s not.
They slipped the gender-nonconformist kid in as a sop to get some of the liberals to watch. It isn’t bothering some of the conservatives because they think it’s just Roseanne playing the “libtards” when IIRC the character was Gilbert’s idea.
I know I’m part of the problem. When Roseanne first aired I ignored all of my friends’ posts about what a funny show it was. Who am I to tell people what to watch?
But after the ratings success of the first week and everything bad about it, this week whenever anyone posted about it, I commented. I explained why she’s problematic and why watching her show is normalizing her brand of racism and hatred. A few were surprised she was that way and I referenced articles where she was quoted and that by posting about loving her show, they’re buying into her hatred.
We’ll see next week if I see the same posts or if they’ll go dark in commenting about watching it.
Caveat: Most of my friends that have watched it are Native American and are involved in Indigenous governance so they should also know better too so I’m not giving anyone a pass anymore.
I was amazed at how my people I know didn’t realize that it’s not just her character, that Barr is a full-on trumper, and that she’s a racist and trans-phobe (I think that’s the right term?) too.
“REALLY? I had no idea…I won’t watch anymore”. at least I enlightened a few folks.
I honestly don’t know how Whitney Cummings can stand writing for this show. There is the concept of keep your enemies closer but still I can’t imagine her stomach and brain not flipping out every day.

We have to remember how many shows are on now. When I was a kid, we had just three networks in fuzzy black and white. I was a young adult when the big news was Fox starting to become a separate network – at first they only had a few shows on their schedule (this was before Fox News was born) and were shown on independent stations, I think, that were not committed to the entire schedule of the other networks.
So even bad shows seem to be able to last a while today, because the expectations for required audience is much lower. The infamous Kardashians still infest our TV sets, but the number of estimated viewers is pretty low. Two or three million is considered excellent for cable. The K Klan has been below that sometimes.
So you can see that an over-the-air network is besotted with Roseanne with 18-25 million viewers for the first show – that translates to big advertiser bucks. They will get annoyed with Roseanne only if those ratings drop a lot.
But the networks are still skittish about some things, obviously, judging from the odd reluctance to air the Blackish episode dealing with kneeling for the National Anthem. (This Trumpian era is so bizarre, never would I have imagined anybody being bothered by a prayerful silent gesture during the anthem.)
Wanda Sykes is also associated with this show. And Blackish.
When does the Murphy Brown reboot start so she can rip apart the Roseanne reboot?

Jesus H. Christ, can’t we have anything good anymore without these psychos ruining everything? The 90s Conner family were an actual representation of an underrepresented group that happened to be hilarious and quite liberal. Roseann lost her sanity ages ago but I didn’t think it would ever come full circle for her to ruin her own show yet again. All these reboots should stop.
I said last week that ratings would tank by episode 3-4. Looks like she’s going to be down around the 31% mark soon a la Trumplandia (all the MAGAts and Deplorables).
I used to like Roseanne but now she is cancelled for me forever. I wish her co-stars would leave the show. In real life, Trump would never even LOOK at Roseanne except as a punchline to a sexist, misogynistic joke (think Rosie O’Donnell). He’d insult and demean her for her looks, her age, her weight. Who knew Roseanne was such an a-hole? Will NEVER watch her show or anything she does again.

What I really want to know is if Roseanne Barr is speaking for all of these middle class, WHITE “patriots” how much of the HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS that she made off them has she donated to this community? Has she helped out farmers or factory workers or communities where all the jobs dried up? From what I can tell she has a mansion in Hawaii and spends a lot of time living there. She hasn’t been poor in about 30 years, but since she remembers being poor so well I would hope that she lent a hand at some point.
Same goes for Rush Limbaugh. He makes $50 million a year being their “voice” and you never hear anything about him helping any of those “poor, suffering” people.

I’m surprised that ABC allowed her to dismiss other network shows so cavalierly (not to mention offensively.) But then again, I read somewhere that ABC has decided to appeal to Trump voters as their target audience. Maybe this is the start of that pivot.

I can’t watch it. I tried because my husband turned it on but i just can’t get over Roseanne. Beside it all the acting is horrible. I feel like they are reading off cue cards.

I didn’t watch the first episode, I didn’t watch her original show except by accident, but I always knew she was a trashy bitch. She is a proud bigoted alt-righter which is just a gentler name for white supremacists.

They want the show to be controversial for free PR and advertisements a la 45. I am curious to see how this plays out but not interested in the process.

I’ve said on this site before that “Black-ish” is the best comedy on network TV. Well, if anyone watched “Atlanta” last night, I think it established itself as the best comedy on cable. Wow, wow, wow. Donald Glover is a f-ing genius.

As a black woman, I say we need to actively boycott anything Wanda Sykes related. She should be so ashamed of herself for taking part in this; on so many levels.

The family that was portrayed in the original version of Roseanne would never have voted for Dump. Especially not Roseanne Connor. The women who were low income earners, even the white ones, voted primarily for Hillary. It is the middle class white women without a college education who voted for Dump. So Roseanne Barr is not being true to her own character by making her support Dump. I could possibly have seen Dan be a Dump supporter, but that’s about it. The only other viable route would be to now make the Connor family white supremacists, which they weren’t in the original. But they are afraid to actually do that and they tossed in a few token non white characters and/ or gender fluid ones to try to suggest that they couldn’t possibly be racist, sexist or homophobic. Yeah no. You can’t have it both ways.
And I find there is a significant number of white liberals who feel the need to watch this show so they can be “down with the working class”. NO. Do not give this woman a voice. There are plenty of shows that feature working class families, like Shameless, that do not resort to supporting the tangerine mussolini.
One of the things I liked about Roseanne OG is that while she was abrasive, the show was inclusive and progressive.
Dan and Roseanne had a diverse group of friends and sometimes colour was part of the story, sometimes sexuality was part of a story but for the most part it was just part of who those characters were.
The tone of this reboot is mean. The dismissive comments about Blackish and Fresh Off The Boat was not the only problem with this episode.
Roseanne grabbed her unsuspecting granddaughter’s head and shoved it in the sink while she turned the tap on soaking her granddaughter… this is after she called the kid a bitch. AND THE AUDIENCE CLAPPED!!!
Roseanne (the character) was raised in an abusive household and while she yelled at her kids a lot, she never raised a hand to them and would not ever have done this because she knew what it was like to be hurt and humiliated by the people she was supposed to be able to trust.
This reboot is NOT near the show it was. They’ve done Roseanne (the show) a great disservice by putting this incarnation on air.
Shellley – I’m with you. I didn’t see the pilot but I watched this week’s show. I was horrified when Roseanne did that. That was so sick and exactly what sane people are trying to change about monsters handling children. I’m mad at ABC for allowing this.
Actually, I think that scene was child abuse. I’m surprised that Sarah Gilbert would participate in that scene, nevertheless the entire show the way it is now.
April- the old Darlene would have either grabbed her daughter away from being assaulted and then sprayed her mother in retaliation, or else more calmly pulled out her cell phone and called 911 to press charges on her mother for assault. And dear Roseanne would spend some time in jail because nobody would pay her fine or bail because she’s so obnoxious.
The old Darlene would not have allowed her mother to physically attack her daughter. The whole point of that scene was that child abuse is normal and the only way to deal with obnoxious children and teenagers, and that anybody trying to raise their children without assaulting them is a clueless libtard.

I’m surprised that the “discipline” episode didn’t kill it for viewers of the old show. Roseanne and Jackie back in the day were clearly determined to avoid being anything like their abusive father. What she did to her granddaughter was assault. And Darlene acted as though she thought Roseanne was right! The characters have been turned completely away from their originals to emulate the worst in our society.
You would think people would realize that assaulting children is not a great approach for making good citizens or children who will be happy to help you in your old age. If they have no other options, they might try to overlook it. But if they can get away from you – they will. If you can’t deal with obnoxious children or teenagers without physically assaulting them, maybe you shouldn’t have kids at all.
It goes way beyond just “voting for Trump” although as you say, the old Roseanne Conner would have seen through Trump in an instant. Actually, I think Dan just wouldn’t have voted at all. He might have been susceptible to the endless smears against Hillary Clinton but he would have known how Trump has routinely shafted small contractors like himself. Roseanne and Darlene would have made sure he knew.
I think they are also killing chances for International distribution by following Rosanne Barr’s inclinations. Trump is very unpopular outside the US and many countries have legally prohibited the kinds of things Roseanne wants to do to her granddaughter. I don’t think there will be as much cheering in other markets. Maybe the right wingers will respond like the Trumpians here, hard to tell.
Like Trump, Roseanne Barr has “matured” into an opportunistic cynic. Both of them are contrarians and attention seekers. Both of them have cruel streaks. Both of them like living the high life in liberal enclaves–New York and Hawaii, respectively–and pretending to commiserate with poor whites. They’ll do anything for the almighty dollar. They seem to have no core beliefs. It’s depressing to see two Americans who have been given so much (Trump/inheritance and Barr/television fame and fortune) give absolutely nothing back to the country that provided the platform for their success. In fact, both of them are attacking most of the principles we hold dear. I’ll turn off her show just like I turn off the TV when Trump comes on.

I don’t see those two families as having the same struggles, ears, and prejudices (held against them) as the same as the Connors, though. That’s looking at the “joke” as bare minimum.
If Roseanne Barr weren’t so well known as an obnoxious racist Trumpian, I think that probably would have been most people’s reaction. I think it would have been perceived as a harmlessly funny line in the old show, especially in the beginning before Roseanne twisted the character to match her increasingly mean self. But her character in the new show is just as mean and awful as herself in real life, so I can understand the reaction. I don’t really know what Roseanne Barr was thinking at the time she wrote or said it, whether the benign interpretation or the malignant interpretation is accurate today. She really confuses me.
Fresh off the boat was is cute, Blackish is too preachy for me. I loved the old Roseanne so I am still watching but that joke was pointless and not funny.
I have canceled all ABC shows from my DVR and refuse to watch this channel anymore. I enjoy Blackish, FOTB and Modern Family But not enough to support this company. They have legitimized a deranged person. She admittedly has mental health issues and it’s showing. It’s been showing for well over a decade.
I refuse to support a company that is ok paying a madwoman millions of dollars to endanger others lives. Her conspiracy theories aren’t just wacky. They target individuals and groups of people in a very real way. I hope her ship sinks fast and I hope she throws ABC under the bus when she goes.
I’m not entirely sure about this. Considering that she was was speaking only to her very pale husband, it doesn’t feel dismissive exactly. We may be just unable to forget her real life obnoxiousness and are quick to read a dismissive attitude into it. Because actually, a very real message of such shows is that other humans of different cultures and ethnicities are indeed “just like us” even when the cultural and historical details are different. We all face similar problems and have similar family conflicts. It actually sounds like something the old Roseanne Conner would say to her husband who had just slept through two shows that he apparently had intended to watch. What did he miss? “They’re just like us. There, you’re all caught up” sounds like the sarcastic Roseanne Conner in the old show, actually.
As far as sleeping through shows is concerned – that’s not dismissive, that’s age. I can start to fall asleep standing up… Really, past a certain age — you close your eyes “to rest them” and many of us are out for hours! I sleep through alarms now. If I need a nap, I know it will not be a short one regardless of how much work I have to do. Roseanne and Dan are at that age.
Blackish, FOTB, American HW, and The Middle are really good shows, so I don’t understand why ABC would even allow Roseanne to use their network as a platform for the Dotard’s cultural war or even allow Roseanne to insult the other shows. The biggest mistake the the press and networks like ABC keep making is trying to appeal to the Dotard supporters, especially since it has been revealed many times that a majority of his supporters are bots.
I’m not buying that Roseanne had 25 million viewers. It would be very interesting if the press looked into how many of those viewers were actually bots or hackers. The Russians hacked into our power grid and election systems and the bots organized rallies, hijacked take a knee, posed as BLM, and used twitter and facebook to start cultural wars. The bots troll polls(like the one that said that 58% think that the Dotard is intelligent or that one that said that 60% of people believe the Dotard’s deep state claims). Do we really think that the bots and hackers aren’t messing with ratings in an attempt to normalize and further Stephen Miller’s agenda ? The press keeps saying that the Dotard has become unhinged since Hope left because she was the Dotard Whisperer, but that isn’t true. The Dotard has always been unhinged, what has changed is Stephen Miller’s rise to #1 as more and more people leave the WH.
Why? – And to think that a few years ago, I would have dismissed your bot viewers idea as a zany conspiracy theory. 🙁
Unfortunately, it’s actually a possibility (and yes, the technology exists), although I doubt that we will ever know because nobody seems interested in trying to find the evidence. The regular Russian bots do seem to have surfaced to praise the show on the net. So it has become a Trump support thing. The bots never really left. I see them surfacing at key times when Trump is facing a lot of criticism for something.
My bet is that Trump wants to do a cameo on Roseanne.
What the hell has happened to this show. When it first came out, it was so perfect and is still fresh if you watch the reruns. But then her ego got in the way and now the show is completely off the rail. I even lost respect for John Goodman who is a terrific actor for being a part of this.

I basically slept through most of Roseanne’s entire existence for years. Well, she’s still an obnoxious, crazy af bitch. Guess I’m all caught up now. Honestly, I never cared for the show when it was on the first time.
Not surprised. The woman is horrid and doesn’t deserve my time.
This is far from new. Behaviors and jokes and the dismissal of people of color have long been part of the entertainment fabric, which reflects a huge part of the social fabric. Roseanne has been awful, and now in this era of Trumpism where hatred and denigration of others are so popular, what are the consequences? Folks are still going to watch the show, and no matter how angry some folks are, it will probably be written into jokes for another week.
To me, the worst part was the sleeping through the shows — a play on being “woke”. They made fun of the plight of others and didn’t care to acknowledge them. But the “just like us” to me wasn’t the sticking point. The sleeping was, and then the making light of it was offensive and awful.
Of course, this demographic of viewers always support those against them. Think: Roseanne grabbed her crotch, spat and destroyed the anthem during a baseball game. This demographic would die if anyone of color did that. Now she’s their hero. Also, look at their voting outcomes. What exactly has Trump done in office to help working-class white folks?
