The August issue of Vanity Fair has a fascinating article about Heath Ledger called “The Last of Heath”, all about his insomnia and sleeping pill usage, his own thoughts about his career, and his relationship with Michelle Williams and daughter Matilda. The issue went to print before Michael Jackson died, and Page Six is claiming that the stuff about Heath’s prescription drug usage is in poor taste, but I don’t really see it. Page Six pulled some of the most tabloid-friendly quotes, but reading the full excerpt on Vanity Fair’s site, it seems more like a tribute to Heath’s life, and an attempt to tell the real story about what Heath was going through in the last years of his life. Here are some of the most interesting parts:
Heath Cleaned Up His Act: Cinematographer Nicola Pecorini, who worked with Ledger on his last film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, says Ledger “used to smoke marijuana on a regular basis, like probably 50 percent of Americans.” But after it became an issue, Ledger “went clean as a whistle.” And vocal coach Gerry Grennell, who worked and lived with the actor during the filming of The Dark Knight, says Ledger even stopped drinking: “Heath would happily go to the bar, buy a round of drinks for friends, and come back and have a soda or juice, never once drinking alcohol.”
Insomnia, Flu and Sleeping Pills: Ledger’s use of sleeping medication to combat chronic insomnia at the end of his life was of more concern to Grennell. “I’d say, ‘If you can possibly bear it to stop taking the medications, do, because they don’t seem to be doing you any good.’ He agreed. It is very difficult for me to imagine how close he came to not taking them.”
Ledger would typically spend night after night awake, diverting himself with time killers, Biskind reports, such as re-arranging the furniture in whatever space he happened to be living in at the moment. Grennell coached him in the Alexander Technique, which helped him to sleep for a few hours at a time, but he still struggled.
“Everyone has a different view of how he passed away,” Grennell tells Biskind. “From my perspective, and knowing him as well as I did, and being around him as much as I was, it was a combination of exhaustion, sleeping medication … and perhaps the aftereffects of the flu. I guess his body just stopped breathing.”
Relationship with Michelle Williams and daughter Matilda: Terry Gilliam [says] that the romance between Ledger and [Michelle] began to unravel during the Oscar campaign for Brokeback Mountain. “The whole machinery started growing up around them,” Gilliam says. “That was the moment when it changed, when he realized, Uh-oh. We perceive the world differently. He didn’t care about things like those awards.”
According to Pecorini, “Heath was always blaming himself [about the relationship], asking, What did I do wrong?” Adds Gilliam, “Because he’s a much nicer person than I am, he really thought he could do the right thing. He was trying to be decent and graceful, give her whatever she wanted—the house, every f-cking thing. But once it started going south, it went very quickly. He was overwhelmed by lawyers, and there were more and more of them, as if they were breeding. I said, ‘This is bullshit. Heath, just end it. Get out—it’s bad. You’ve got to just walk away from it.’ The stakes kept going up. He wouldn’t listen to any of us.” As Ledger’s relationship with Williams unraveled, and the pair started dealing with lawyers and custody issues, according to Gilliam, Ledger fell apart. “The thing that really made Heath snap” was legal wrangling over his daughter, Matilda, Gilliam says.
Heath’s Ambivalence Towards Stardom, Playing The Joker: Ledger’s friend and agent, Steven Alexander, tells Biskind that Heath “was always hesitant to be in a summer blockbuster, with the dolls and action figures and everything else that comes with one of those movies. He was afraid it would define him and limit his choices.” According to friends of Ledger’s, one of the reasons he agreed to do Dark Knight was that the unusually long shoot would give him an excuse to turn down other offers. Alexander tells Biskind that Ledger had a pay-or-play deal on The Dark Knight—meaning he’d get compensated no matter what—so he felt he had the freedom to do whatever he wanted as the Joker. According to Pecorini, Ledger hoped his performance would be so far-out he’d be fired, and thus become the beneficiary of a lengthy, paid vacation.
[From Vanity Fair]
I found the Michelle Williams stuff interesting, but I have some nit-picking with Vanity Fair. Throughout the piece, they refer to Michelle as Heath’s wife, which she never was. They were engaged, but never married. That simple fact doesn’t limit their relationship, or make their split any more or less of a factor in Heath’s state of mind in his last year. The report seems to indicate that Michelle really had strong feelings about how much time Matilda spent with Heath – which makes me suspect Michelle had serious concerns about Heath’s state of mind. Even though I think it’s nice that so many of Heath’s friends and colleagues gave interviews about Heath, it’s interesting that Michelle was not interviewed. I’d imagine her take on that time period would be a lot different.

People who lived in NYC at the time knew perfectly well Heath had a drug problem.
I am so tired of people covering up that fact.
That doesn’t take away from his talent, and he might as well have suffered from Insomnia (in addition to his addiction), but to claim it was a combination of flu… Please.
To claim that “Everyone has a different view of how he passed away”.
Nobody has any “different view”.
He had a huge drug problem. HE was surrounded by idiots that cared more about the cover up than about calling an ambulance.
He could have been saved, had they just make the damn phone call.
As for Michelle, who like Katie Holmes is the daughter of a wealthy family and still made sure to get pregnant and get attached to a bigger star (and grab his money)-
I don’t know who is the bigger culprit here, but I do know that Heath did not choose to become a father with her.
She forced that commitment.
She might have been right about limiting his visitation considering his addiction, but why force such a commitment on anybody in such a condition?
Oh, beside the fact that he is a big star and she wanted like Katie Holmes, and Jen Garner that association with a bigger name, plus to enjoy the money they made.
I think that it blames Michelle Williams in part for his frame of mind. At least it seems that way to me.
Why the sudden spin? He was not “clean as a whistle” – there are photographs of him filming in Canada where he is smoking. Michelle has remained silent, so why the dishing of dirt? Is she not allowing Heath’s family visitation? Something stinks.
I always though Michelle Williams was a bitch!! The ones who play it coy and innocent are always the worst kind!!!
:DDD
I don’t think it lays blame on her at all. Life happens. People react. Period.
Jeepers Ned, is it not a little early for unbridled misogyny?
I read the excerpt on the Vanity Fair website and it says Heath and Michelle were married, wtf?
One problem with Ned’s theory: When Michelle and Heath hooked up, he wasn’t exactly super world wide famous. Kinda, but c’mon he’s no Tom Cruise. And Michelle never capitalized on being involved with Heath.
my goodness he was so hot. I just adored him and his acting. He made alot of movies I really didn’t care for and I think he really did lose himself in each role.
That article, I think was a lesson in how to waste 500 words. Not that I can put my finger on it but, I have a very bad taste in my mouth
@Ned – How did anyone who lived in NYC at the time know Heath had a drug problem? I’m not doubting what you say, I just am curious. Did people that lived in the apartment know, or what?
I don’t like the way it seems to point at Michelle Williams as the culprit, though what Ned says makes sense.
I HATE the fact that Olsen and the massage therapist were too busy trying to cover up everything than calling 911! He might have been saved… and that pisses me off.
I bet most of the stars in Hollywood have drug problems… but I don’t know, I just really like Heath Ledger. So sad.
Ned – Do share with us how you know HL didn’t choose to become a father with MW. 🙄
there’s always a guy or two have simply has to post that the woman was a gold digger…
um,she may not have planned the pregnancy either….stuff happens when you’re young and in love, living in the moment, filming a movie together to boot….
same with garner-i just dont see her gold digging with affleck. he’s famous, but not a huge talent or that serious of an actor,IMO. and garner already had movie offers, and plenty of money from ALIAS.
IF anything,I thought her marrying Affleck cost her in career b/c she was no longer the single sex symbol she was prior…or,that the media made her out to be this hot thing in flashy clothes a la alias.
same thing has happened with jessica alba, right?
so,no,i dont think the women you mentioned are gold diggers, except for katie holmes, but in her case,it’s more about being a fame digger, more than the money.
ned, heath was not that well-known when he and michelle worked on brokeback mountain. in fact, in america he was probably best known as the ex-boyfriend of the very famous naomi watts.
‘Ledger had a pay-or-play deal… meaning he’d get compensated no matter what… Ledger hoped his performance would be so far-out he’d be fired, and thus become the beneficiary of a lengthy, paid vacation.’
That kind of thinking doesn’t exactly reek of integrity.
Perhaps thats what he thought, but his performance was so far out there it was brilliant. At times, it was hard to remind myself that it was Heath.
yes ned i think many regulars would like to know where you got all of this matter of fact information
still so sad to look at their pictures, they were such a beautiful couple.
I don’t like how the friend seems to be pinning some blame on Michelle Williams. I think she has handled this admirably. I know nothing of her personal life, but I’m sure the situation was difficult for her as well during the break-up and before.
They were married, it just wasn’t widely publicized. They were photographed with wearing wedding bands shortly after their daughter was born, but never commented. It was reported that they filled for a marriage certificate. In an interview Heath did for the movie “Candy”, he was asked by the reporter and give a nonchalant response, saying that he’d been photographed with his wedding band. There are also other photographs with him wearing it at a basketball game with a friend. So, yes they were married. I’m sure Vanity Fair fact checked with friends and others.
So Connie, are you a regular here?
I guess I should join you all and say that it was indeed exhaustion and flu.
Because 30 year old men just die sometimes out of “exhaustion” and insomnia.
That’s right. Why don’t just cover it up as if that would change what happened, and how Heath was long before he died.
oh, and he really wanted and planned to have a baby and stay together forever for life with Michelle.
That’s right.
and Michelle was not forcing fatherhood on him.
That’s right.
That’s why all those lawyers were needed.
You know, one thing about Heath was that he was really vulnerable and lonely, which made it possible to bully him with lawyers (which is even easier when you are on drugs…) and the people who were around him were idiots that cared more about what the papers would say.
The saddest thing is that you guys keep doing it, instead of just saying things as they are.
He could have been saved if you people were not so obsessed with cover up and image.
It might happen tomorrow to another actor and you would still help with the cover up instaed of saying things as they are and saving him.
Just because he was only a liked and respected up and coming guy, as opposed to Tom C. or Ben A. (after his Lopez romance) doesn’t mean he wanted and chose to be a father with her and have such a commitment with her.
Same is true for the goop’s junkie hubby, or Ben A..
That was completely not the point.
The point was he died because of his drug addiction and because the people around him that knew what was going on- let his body struggle for a very critical period of time instead of just calling an ambulance and telling the authorities the truth.
All they care about was that they would not get into trouble and that their own name would not get involved, so that things would be kept quiet and “cleared” from the drugs.
No, I really don’t think they were married. First – if they were married, then when they split in 2007, there would have been some public legal wrangling from a divorce.
But say they were married, and decided to split without getting a divorce – then why did Heath’s assets go to his parents? Michelle would have gotten his assets, regardless of a will made before Matilda was born.
In my opinion, the fact that Heath hadn’t updated his will always spoke volumes about his relationship with Michelle. And if there really was all of this legal wrangling for Matilda’s custody, why didn’t one of his lawyers suggest he update his will? That’s standard procedure in any divorce or custody case.
This is what I hate most about celebrity gossip. One second they are sweet talking someone and the next its “I think they are a bitch!” But if she died tomorrow, there would be 100 posts with nothing but good things to say. I don’t know Michelle or Heath, but since his death she has been silent and I would think someone after “money” would have sold the story 15 minutes after he was declared dead. Thats all I’m saying.
You want to know what p-o’s me more than anything else in the world? When some bozo writes something like “he didn’t want a child with her and have such a commitment with her”.
Then the answer is simple: wear a condom buddy–or keept it in your pants.
That baby didn’t materialize without his cooperation on some level, and she is the spitting image of him.
And he clearly adored that child….so really, dude, put a lid on it.
Planned or not, he created that child by not planning on not having one, and adored her completely. So dont go trash talking Michelle as if she forced him into anything.
Seriously Ned. You are a piece of work. I usually don’t feed the internet trolls, but I so badly want to shake you.
I thought Heath Ledger was a decent actor. That’s about it. Then he died of a drug overdose. I don’t really understand the continued fascination with him, but whatever. Some people are still hung up on James Dean, so. There’s no call for you to go slamming all the pretty girls, just because, um, well actually you don’t seem to have a reason. Huh. I mean, you are flipping between condemning Heath for the drug abuse, and then vilifying Michelle for getting pregnant and ruining him. You must think so little of men to believe that women have so much power over them.
And Dirty Martini, I’m right there with you. It takes two to tango… But I guess Ned thinks that Heath was too dumb to know how babies are made.
I know, right? Any time a baby is created out of wedlock between two people who weren’t planning on getting pregnant…someone is always gonna say the woman got herself knocked up on purpose to trap the man.
You know? Sometimes, babies get made by accident. Sometimes, those accident babies are carried to term and delivered. Even crazier? Sometimes, the parents of these accident babies try to stay together and raise them…without any Machiavellian plots to trap, suck dry, or use anyone from either party.
It’s true.
Ned, I can’t believe how many times I have thought & said this but…. YOU’RE A DOUCHE!
YOu know what’s EVEN MORE SHOCKING
Sometimes men actually want children, and commitment.
Unless this Ned was a close confidant of Heath I can’t see how he could possibly be privy to the information that Heath was being persecuted somehow by Michelle.
Sigh. Out of all of the recent celeb deaths, his was the only one that I actually got teary/sad about. HL was such a talented man, who died far, far, far too young. 🙁
I can agree with certain parts in Ned’s argument. It’s infuriating that the people in question didn’t just call the ambulance. He could quite possibly still be here depending on the time frame of when he stopped breathing.
I thought he was an underrated actor. My first movie with him in it was “10 Things I Hate About You”, I was really young, and I just thought the boy was one of the most handsome things I had ever seen. He surpassed what I thought he could do with The Joker (Big comic book fan right here) so I was a tad worried when he was casted. But he did one of the most amazing jobs. And now I’m watching “Ned Kelly” melting with that false Irish accent.
personally, I think ALL of you have a point. and yes, that includes Ned.
and, um… about Heath needing to “keep it in his pants” if he didn’t want a child…. sometimes men are duped into thinking their g/f is “protected”, when that is just not the case. intentional duping, or not. but any way you angle it, it doesn’t make it just HEATH’s fault that Michelle got pregnant. I mean, that’s slightly obvious?
And yes, I think there is certifiable blame to be cast on those who knew the real deal about the drugs.. and who were involved.. and cared more about saving their own reputations than HIS LIFE. Timing was critical, and they didn’t make the call! To me, that is manslaughter, and they should have been criminally investigated and punished if proven guilty. But alas, everyone lawyered up, greased the system with money, contacts, and power, and wa-freaking-la – Heath is dead, and the ones who COULD have saved him but didn’t got off scott free.
and on a COMPLETELY (or semi) unrelated note… am I the ONLY person who is wondering if Michael Jackson may have committed suicide? His doctor seems like a complete skeeze.. (he “couldn’t find a PHONE” to call 911, when every man woman and child carries a cellphone at the very least!?!)… but what IF he is telling the truth that he didn’t inject him.. what IF Michael took an overdose or injected himself? Yes, I realize it is pure and total reckless speculation.. but that is just what has crossed my mind, and it ain’t like I am on the news saying it.
Would love to hear if anyone else has even pondered that. I think Michael was perhaps just OVER it all.. that it just wasn’t worth it any more, and feeling the burden of all the heartache in his life being insurmountable with no end in sight – in addition to the unimaginable pressure of the tour coming up in TWO weeks.. at age 50.. lawsuits in every aspect of his life… $500 million in debt…more than a superhuman could withstand in my opinion. and the last nagging question for me.. why did he JUST re-hire his ex-lawyer of many years ago, a week before his death – who is the one who happens to have his will and is the executor!?) questions….
“Men get duped” in thinking their girl is protected? Yep.
Sometimes women “get duped” into thinking their guy isn’t married.
My point: Everyone is liable to “get duped”. Its the human condition.
All I’m saying here is Grow Up, Accept Full Responsibility for your own actionsl and if YOU don’t want babies, them you should act so that you don’t make babies.
Because you just might get duped.
So wrap it up or keep it in your pants if you don’t want one. I dont care who she is or what she says.
And ladies: Act to protect yourselves too. I dont care if he tells you “its over”, take old Ronald Reagan’s advice about Russia:
TRUST AND VERIFY.
Dirty Martini stands by her comments.
(and wise ones they are, too, Dirty)
well said.
I heard Michelle Williams would never have been
chosen for Brokeback Mountain if it were known
she was from Dawson’s Creek.
So how was that missed?
She weasled her way into getting that role and most
likely a relationship with Heath Ledger.
I agree with what Ned said about Michelle. Also she seemed
like a loner for awhile. What goodlooking guys did
she date before Heath? Heath was like a male
supermodel with a lot of acting talent and a loving
heart. She wanted to KEEP HIM. What a selfish
desperate way to trap someone who was definitely
meant for another woman. Another woman who did
not get her chance to meet him. He would still be
here today if a REAL WOMAN got to be with him.
A REAL WOMAN would not have overwhelmed him
emotionally like what was said in the article.
What a spoiled little brat she really is. I heard her
parents lived around the corner and most likely she
ran to them like the baby she truly is.
She desperately wanted to land a goodlooking guy
because she never had one as gorgeous as Heath
Ledger. All of my boyfriends looked like models.
I treated them all like gold. If only I tried to meet
Heath Ledger before this spoiled brat did.
I only blame Michelle for what was said in this
article. My disgust is about someone else NOT
Michelle. I’m referring to a tiny talentless nobody
who prevented Heath from getting 911 help.
She is lier. She knows something. I pray someday
the truth will come out and Heath Ledger will have
the justice he deserves and everyone will stop
talking about his drug use and focus on what really
happened.
