Robert Pattinson has been promoting his new film, Damsel, this week. These photos are from Wednesday night’s premiere in LA. Rob happily posed with his costar and friend Mia Wasikowska. I’ve seen some people suggesting that Rob and Mia need to happen, but I’m really not feeling it. I think they’re just friends, and they’ve been friends for a while. I also think she’s probably not his type? He likes a bit of drama with his girlfriends, whether it’s FKA Twigs or Kristen Stewart. Mia just seems too low-key for his taste. As for Robsten and how it is truly UNBROKEN, Rob has been asked about Twilight a lot this week and his answers are quite nice, in general. Some assorted quotes:
On his favorite part of Twilight: “The whole thing” was his favorite memory, adding, “That first movie was great. It was really, really fun. It was a massive turning point in my life. I had an entirely different life after. I wasn’t entirely sure I was going to be an actor until after that movie so I’ll always appreciate it.”
On working with amazing leading ladies: “Oh tons! I mean, I’ve worked with some real power houses. Definitely Mia is one of them, obviously. Kristin Scott Thomas, Uma Thurman… Kristen Stewart, Kristen too! Kristen Stewart as well, yeah. Catherine Hardwicke, too. She’s great.”
In my opinion, Rob doesn’t get enough credit for being an actor who actively looks for projects with women. There are so many actors – of all ages – who avoid love stories like the plague, and would rather chew off their own arm rather than co-star in a drama where a woman has an equal role. You know who Rob reminds me of a little bit? Hugh Grant. The floppy hair, the willingness to work with women as equal storytelling partners, etc. As for what Rob says about Twilight and Kristen… I think he’s gotten enough distance from it now to appreciate what the franchise did for his career and his life.
PS… Mia’s dress is a Dior. Rob’s suit is Dior too.

I was an accidental Twilight mom back then and the first movie was great. It was done on a low Indy budget and it had that “feel” to it. The movies that followed started to get that highly polished big movie feel.
I like him and I also like his singing! I hope he has a long career.
He stayed in my town for a good chunk of time between late March or early April and May. He was filming The Lighthouse with Willem Dafoe. I almost walked into Dafoe in the liquor store and didn’t even notice until a friend had said “how did you not see him?” because he genuinely just blended in so much. EVERYONE was gaga over the two of them – this is a small town in NS, nothing really happens here. Both were incredibly kind and friendly with anyone who interacted with them.
Pattinson made time to take photos with people a couple of different nights, but mostly kept to himself. Honestly – he seems like such a nice guy who isn’t obsessed with the fame in the way a lot of actors are. He seems happy to work, happy to do what he enjoys doing but doesn’t abuse the powers that come with it.
Ultimately, I like him. He got a lot of flack for Twilight, so I can’t blame him for disliking it so much at the time.
Thanks for sharing your story! It’s nice to hear when celebrities are nice and low key while filming. Unfortunately, you hear too often of the ones who are divas or aloof or downright rude to people.
I think he’s always been grateful for the Twilight opportunity, but you can’t blame him for being traumatized by the whole experience back then. It was madness. I’ll bet some time and distance from it all has helped him make sense of it and move on.
I like him too.
I knew, when I saw that “bothered” bit he did with Jimmy Fallon, that he was a good dude who didn’t take himself too seriously and could make fun of himself for laughs.
(if you’re not familiar with it, “bothered” was an ongoing bit Fallon did where he did an imitation of Pattinson as the sparkly vampire and Pattinson did a cameo one time.)
It’s refreshing that he doesn’t gripe about it and acknowledges that it’s where his big break came from and sounds like he appreciates it for what it was. That being said, that first movie made me cringe the entire time. My sister and I went to shame watch at the theatre since we weren’t teens and so many people where laughing at the ridiculousness. The other movies were all pretty boring as well but this was KS at peak lip biting.
To be fair, Kristen played Bella exactly as she was written which included being fidgety and lip-bitey.
I agree, often an actors biggest role or success is one they hate the most. They are lucky to even have that in their career because most don’t.
I liked New Moon the most out of all the movies, which is strange since I thought it was the worst book out of the series LOL I think they found a way to make it work with Bella’s depression and visions.
I loved the first movie at the time, but in watching it more recently…OMG…so bad. The bad acting, the makeup, the corny dialogue. Could have been a lot better.
Of course it was great. It made him famous and a millionaire. I’d say great too. 🙂
I love everything about this except that ridiculous blue steel he’s trying to pull off. gah, Rob, stop.
Hmm I have this issue with him. Hardly ever see photos of him but when i do I’m super annoyed. His face annoys me.
He has really grown on my over the years. Respect!
Those movies are godawful, don’t get me wrong, but I always felt the main actors come across poorly for how badly they spoke of the material. Like, you got paid to do a job and got big name recognition for it. Enough with the put-upon pouting. I’m glad that he’s matured somewhat, but like…it wasn’t subtle when the movies were actually out.
Yeah. I think everybody involved tried to distance themselves from the movies because of how bad the scripts were. The problem was that the younger generation didn’t know or didn’t care to do it discreetly, IMO. And honestly, I don’t blame them since a lot of them have been stigmatized as bad actors for years after the movies.
I think they were honest. The material (and films) were increasingly silly so they didn’t treat them or discuss them seriously most of the time. The series was hated so the internet read their comments a certain way (“he hates the movies and can’t wait to escape”), but I never found them ungrateful. It seemed like the set was fun, they were nice to fans, and they didn’t run from promoting it.
+1
Kristen stewart has never spoken badly about Twilight. She has always given it credit for the opportunities it brought.
Oh my god @Kaiser I am so glad someone else also sees the similarities to Hugh Grant. Thank you!
I saw Damsel and really liked it. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a different kind of indie… it’s funny (but not a comedy per se) kinda dark but kinda eccentric too…with some insightful commentary on gender roles. It’s shot beautifully.
Pattinson is great in the film.
Catherine Hardwick was the director on the first film, and she got so much shit from fans for her work: they hated the lighting, the way she adapted scenes from the books, etc. But in the end she made the best film in the franchise–the only one worth watching imo.
I watched the first Twilight movie when I already was a grown-up woman with a kid and considered myself an arthouse lover, cinephile, etc. I was ready to criticize and laugh at its ridiculousness but somehow I fell in love with it like a freaking emo teenage girl… It had beautiful actors, sexual tension, great score and scenery and that particular gothic feeling to it… all the sequels left me unbothered, but I still watch the first one when it’s on TV…
As for Robert – kudos to him for surviving all the mockery and prejudice and I’m happy he went on to have a decent career all while being unproblematic, low key and scandal-free…
Totally agree with all of this.
And for those who said the sequels were cheesy, yeah, maybe so, but the source material was REALLY hard to adapt to screen.
Some things are better left to the imagination.
@westhollywood aka boring af ! He sounds like a depressed person most of the time
I think the first Twilight film was quite good considering they were working on a small budget and not the best source material. The feel to the movie was really unique. Catherine Hardwicke did an incredible job and I’m still angry that she got passed over for male directors as soon as the movie was a success. They pumped more money into the movies and only managed to make them more god awful as the series went on. The acting, CGI and dialog was horrendous in the later movies. I don’t blame Rob for only mentioning the first movie.
Catherine deserved much better. Whether or not you liked the movies, you can’t deny that she made a hugely successful film on a very modest budget, using a cast of very young virtual unknowns. It launched a very successful franchise and the careers of some unknown actors.
Her movie had a very interesting and distinct visual style. If only the scriptwriter hadn’t indulged some of the super cheesy dialogue.
I love Catherine Hardwicke and all her movies. She captures the teen spirit in such a great way – she understands how over the top and dramatic it feels as a teenager, but never makes fun of them. I think she got it just right in the first movie and its the only one I can watch at all!
What is the gossip about Mia though? Is she single? I was pretty glad when she broke up with that douchey Jesse Eisenberg, but then she seemed to have fallen off the face of earth both gossip and career-wise… She and Robert have been friends for years and look very comfortable around each other, they had many opportunities to become a thing but they chose not to go there, so highly unlikely there’s anything romantic between them.
There’s never been much gossip about her since she lives quietly in Australia. Not sure what’s going on with her personally or professionally. She and Rob share an agent and he books a lot so I’m hoping she’s just being picky about what roles she wants to devote her time to. Sometimes it feels like a lot of actresses her age have slowed down compared to what they were doing even just five years ago and I wonder if it’s slim pickings out there for them. I know at one point she was directing shorts, but I’m not sure if she’s still pursing that. She’s a fave so I hope to see more of her in any capacity.
Rob is certainly grateful for his break in Twilight even though he had some issues with the source material and interpretation. The rags keep reporting how much he hated Twilight when at no time have I heard him state this. I’m glad he mentioned Catherine Hardwicke because she did the best job with a small budget. She was excellent at capturing the important themes—family loyalty and protection, father daughter awkwardnesss, sexual longing. As soon as it was a success, she was replaced by male directors with bigger budgets but lacking the same vision.
No it wasn’t. My 2nd hand embarrassment for the actors was overwhelming.
He was forced to name Kristen Stewart by the interviewer… It was not spontaneous.
That interviewer was trying hard to get her name out of him and make her headline later… That interview actually shows he still avoids calling her name and gets visibly annoyed when forced like that…
@danny thats bc of weirdos like you who have meltdowns if he mentions her. Kristen has mentioned his name about 5 times in relation to working on Twilight and that experience and people like you insist she is using his name to stay relevant and send signs that she still wants him – LOL.
Meanwhile she is having meetings with Lynne Ramsey and Charlize Theron and supporting her girlfriend at Milan fashion week….
K i do love him and think he’s both beautiful and adorable but DAMN
i mean for a professional actor who was a professional model
seems like people could make a face for photo ops that didn’t involve so much sucking-in of cheeks. it’s just old. like, if he were to open his mouth, he’d look like a non-stuffy, non-pissed or snotty human (which i think in reality he is.) i know, tho. then, that would break the all-important SUCTION.
tired of people actually making the same damn practiced posed face in pics, whether it’s the milennials in the local community college or the peeps in the glossies. with chicks it has to be that damn (generally injected w filler) pouty-lip thing (with, of course, that perfect- vulgar- little aperture-hole right in the center, yes female lips are supposed to be labial, we get it, we get it, look how nice and erect and penetrable yours are) and then dudes here who already have unbelievable cheekbones thinking the cheeks themselves need to be obviously sucked in and hollowed out.
gaah
I’m glad that Catherine Hardwick got a tiny name-check recognition from the actors that she (and her great casting agent) basically made into household names. She cast Kristen, Robert, Anna Kendrick and quite a few other actors from a lowbudget indie film into a successful franchise. She seems to get so little credit from the industry and the actors she works with. I mean, horror dudebro’s get more cred and bigger movie budget career-trajectories with far less trackrun. (I support them too though ;p)
I still would.
Sucked in cheeks and all, I would take him home with me any day. Saw him in person in NYC and thought he looked great. And I think he is happy where his career is going. He has made some excellent choices and his fans have been exposed to films they otherwise would not have seen. Still a fan after all these years.
