It’s no secret that John Krasinski really loves his wife, Emily Blunt. What might be surprising is the lengths he goes to to be with Emily and their kids, four-year-old Hazel and two-year-old Violet.
At the Friday premiere of his new Amazon Prime series, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, Krasinski confessed that “Family for me, it’s a non-negotiable thing,” and admitted, “So if I’m honest, I was shooting 6,000 miles away from them, and I flew back every single weekend.”
This means that John was making the “brutal” commute between Toronto, where Jack Ryan was filming, to London, where his wife Emily Blunt was “shooting a little indie movie called Mary Poppins.” Emily set up “home base” in England, with Violet and Hazel. John said that, “I always want the base to be with their mom, and I’ll do the flight time.” That flight time also included time spent in the airport trying to convince customs agents that Emily was actually his wife. John said the travel was worth having the quality time with his family.
“I think that there’s nothing you can complain about in this business, you know what I mean? We are all so lucky to be doing what we’re doing. If there’s one thing that’s a bummer, it’s that you spend time away from your kids. But guess what, a lot of people spend time away from their kids. So for me, I think we’re all living in a fantasy camp. So I’m not going to be the first one to complain.”
I think it’s sweet of John to make such an effort to see his family, because, star or not, the constant travel can definitely take its toll. I was in a similar situation, where my ex-husband worked across the state during the week and then spent weekends at home with me. This situation did eventually contribute to our divorce, but we weren’t John and Emily. John’s new series has gotten mostly positive reviews, so he may have to get used to the weekend traveling if the show gets picked up for a second season. I have a feeling these two will stick it out.

Love these two. No drama, no unnecessary fuss or hyperbole. They are sweet together, they both seem to have a good balance of normal vs. celeb (good that he realises they are in position to be able to travel across the world compared to so many others who do long distance from each other and don’t get the chance).
He’ll always be Jim Halpert to me.
Exactly. Just like Rainn Wilson will always be Dwight Schrute
I am not gonna lie ,I was very skeptical about john kranski playing Jack Ryan. I mean Jim to Jack, mind blown. But I am really enjoying the series. So please let there be a season two .Also, I love him more now that he flew home every weekend.
I’m crushing on him so hard right now.
That’s sweet that he takes the brunt of the commute, although I’m sure it still sucks for everyone involved.
I haven’t watched yet, any good?
It’s unfortunate they were working at the same time, but it sounds like they did the best they could then, and let the kids have the stability of staying in one place while he ran back and forth.
I get what he’s saying, that he loves his job and it’s fun, but I will say that women and POC, even those doing well in it, have plenty to complain about in the business.
Jack Ryan was a bit predictible, cos you know Jack Ryan is the smartest and best at what he does. Very enjoyable and is currently filming season 2 already.
I watched it all this weekend and loved it. It didn’t hit me until episode 6 that Tomothy Hutton has a part in it.
We are kinda liking the series – it’s pretty predicable, but you can tell a lot of $$$ has been spent on it. John Clancy keeps selling the premise, and it gets regurgitated into slightly different scenarios, so it’s predictable. We’re liking John Krasinsk in this incarnation.
Our problem is the Prime Video interface – it SUCKS. Tried to watch it on our SmartTV – not so smart. We’re streaming it now from my phone to our SmartTV so that we can watch together and don’t have to huddle around a laptop. Netflix works perfectly on the SmartTV, so, yeah – figure it out, Jeff Bezos. 🙂
I’m glad Emily Blunt is with someone who is treating her well and that she’s happy. I gather it wasn’t smooth sailing with Michael Buble.
I thought season 1 was easy, fun, popcorn watching. The romance storyline with the doctor was so flat though! I felt like some one unrelated to the rest of the writing staff did those scenes, and they didn’t care if they lost their job.
I like this couple a lot and I like Emily’s kind of sarcastic/biting humour which seems to sometimes get mistaken for coldness. Loved A Quiet Place and happy it’s getting a sequel – small budget, screenplay-driven movie doing well is always a good thing. In two minds about Tom Clancy’s works and the CIA PR stuff which Jack Ryan is a very prominent example of. These movies/shows are basically designed to justify the role of no-oversight intelligence ops, which we know can lead to ethical, moral, human rights, etc., issues, not to mention meddling in the sovereignty and democratic process of other countries to the countries’ detriment (Central and South America for starters).
Opening scene of Jack Ryan, two children get blown up. But it’s nice that he cares so much about his.
You do know those weren’t real children.
The show has already been renewed for a second season, but Emily Blunt won’t necessarily be filming in London then.
