Here are some of the bigger TV nominations for Golden Globes – you can see the full list of 2019 Golden Globes nominations here. I’m putting the film and TV nominations into separate posts, just because there are so many, and it’s worth discussing them separately. The Golden Globes come on earlier and earlier every year, it feels like – this year’s Globes ceremony happens on Sunday, January 6th at 8 pm. It will be hosted by Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg, that was just announced last night. Some of the big nominations:

My big takeaway is that… with Netflix, Amazon Studios and Hulu, there’s a real lack of frontrunner, water-cooler TV shows these days. Pretty much the only TV show that everyone watches is Game of Thrones. I honestly haven’t heard of some of the nominated shows, and I write about entertainment sh-t for a living!! Other notables: it’s nice to see so much love for The Good Place. I’m surprised that Benedict Cumberbatch got nominated for Patrick Melrose, but the miniseries didn’t get nominated. I feel like the Versace miniseries is probably the low-key favorite for many of the big awards. What else? Justice for The Americans, at long last. And the Globes love Hugh Grant.

Bodyguard was amazing! the best series I’ve seen all year and now I have a crush on Richard Madden!
Seconded! Honking for Richard Madden! Somehow in GOT he was too much of a baby to be hot.
I never “got” Richard Madden until the Bodyguard. I always thought, “handsome, square jawed, dull.” Then I watched the Bodyguard…oh my gosh he can act.
Fourth. He is HWAT in the Bodyguard. His chemistry with the Home Secretary is off the roof! Watched every episode of GOT and had found him super boring as Robb Stark. I’m like “well, Robb is all grown up and sexy!”.
The show is soo good, great tension and surprises. Highly recommend. I saw an interview with the actress that plays ‘Nadia’ super gorgeous and down to earth. She’s already got a lead role on another show.
5th on Richard Madden. He’s gorgeous and talented. His work on Bodyguard was some of the best work I have seen on TV this year. Really pleased with his nomination.
My family loves “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” To be honest we don’t watch much tv but this show really is… marvelous!
I know Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is really well done, but she’s supposed to be a comic, and I never find her material funny! I don’t even like her character overly much: her parents are basically raising her kids for her, so I’m shouting,”You left your son in the park!” Her agent, however, is hysterical, I like so much of the dialogue, and we watch it because it IS so well done, The sets, costumes, etc. are amazing.
I just watched the first episode of the new season last night and I’m a little bit worried the magic may have gone out of it this season. It’s still all very pretty and impeccably costumed, etc. so I’ll continue to watch regardless, but I hope we get back to the heart of it in the rest of the episodes.
LOVE the MmM! I love Amy and all her shows, especially gilmore girls!!!!
It’s a really cute show, and the lead actress is so pretty.
Thank god they didn’t nominate Jennifer Garner and her awful show Camping. A couple of pundits were predicting it despite lousy reviews and ratings, just because the HFPA “adore” her. RME.
Bwah! Sis, Jennifer Garner is little more than a tabloid spectacle — not an actress. Her entire career is on Instagram. Awards people aren’t checking for her.
No Jim Carey for Kidding? He was brilliant.
… Jim Carrey is nominated!
Sorry about that – I wasn’t looking under the ‘musical or comedy’ category!
He is truly an incredible actor. Even more in “serious” stuff than in comedies.
Hahah, wow. I don’t keep up with TV at all. I’ve only watched the Good Place out of all the shows listed, and I’m not up to date. We don’t have cable or satellite, and Candian Netflix is not the gem that US Netflix is. We do have an android box but I rarely use it haha.
I have a problem with tv and movies… in that I can’t do sad. I can’t do super stressful. TV for me pretty much needs to be amusing and a distraction from the dumpster fire of politics, and the best thing I’ve found in AGES has been Life in Pieces. The whole cast is just great. Husband does like the Ozarks quite a bit, though. He’s more into the drama stuff than I am. I watch more dumb youtubers than tv shows honestly. And I will rewatch Daria forever – usually an episode to wind down before bed.
Agree.
and Life in Pieces is brilliant! The whole cast, but for me, especially Dianne Weist. I love her so much.
Dianne is a wonder. They really did such an impressive job casting the family. Pretty sure my husband is in love with Jen/Zoe Lister-Jones haha.
LOL Cdn Netflix is the bane of my existence. I’m so jealous of the shows my American relatives get!
Sharp Objects was fantastic. Can Gillian Flynn just write everything on TV?!? We watched the first episode at like 6pm, went through six episodes in one night. Just great. And Amy Adams was awesome. All the awards!
I just saw Widows and didnt realize Gillian Flynn wrote the screen play
…she did?! I saw it too and didn’t realize! Fun fact: all throughout the movie, there is was a man next to me with his hands under a jacket in his lap and acting kinda funny. I left the theater more than once to text my police officer friend and ask “gunman or pervert”? For the record, pervert. I didn’t get to fully enjoy the movie how I wanted. Ah, being a woman in America!
She co wrote it with Steve McQueen.
I started watching Sharp Objects, but for some reason I had a great deal of trouble getting into it. I don’t know why but it brought up memories of my childhood with a physically/emotionally abusive father and both of my parents were alcoholics. In fact my daughter loves SO, but she wasn’t raised in the same atmosphere because I left her father when she was 9 months since he was also physically/emotionally abusive to me, not her. But Killing Eve was exceptional and I watched that entire series in two days, I might watch it again. I am bedridden and I haven’t watched many of these shows, but I love Viola Davis and I never miss HTGAWM. I don’t watch a number of these shows, but I will have to look into some of them that all of you are mentioning. Though I did enjoy the Kiminsky Method, I love Alan Arkin.
Escape at Dannemora! Patricia Arquette is mesmerizing. Too bad Benicio del Toro wasn’t nominated. Hope the Emmys correct that.
Escape at Dannemora is sooooo good. All 4 Patricia, Benicio, Paul and Eric are putting on a clinic. It’s exceptional work from beginning to end.
They nominated a lot of new stuff as is standard…and “suggested” by the studios. The HFP are easily influenced so it’s all pretty meaningless. If there were any snubs it likely just means the gifts from the networks didn’t get there on time. 🙄
Agreed. Meisel out here again and the second season only came out this week.
Can’t take it seriously.
I’m glad to see Homecoming get some noms, Julia Roberts and Stephan James both gave great performances. At first I thought he was overacting a tiny bit but he leveled off, lol.
I would have liked to see some recognition for Better Call Saul. Rhea Seehorn is so good, imo.
Rhea Seehorn is criminally overlooked for Better Call Saul. She’s fantastic.
Yay for the Good Place, the Americans, and Sandra/Killing Eve.
Kind of an odd mix this year. The Globes make strange nominations.
For the love of me, I don’t know why The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel keeps getting nominated. The main character is not likeable and her meteríal isn’t that great either. I kind of like more the supporting characters. But what do I know. I stopped watching halfway fist season.
Season 2 of the Good Place had better win best comedy-it’s the best out of the group by far.
And YES to the bodyguard. Amazing show.
Season 2 was amazing. Such original (and funny)TV.
Emma Stone snubbed for Maniac. I’m so happy, it was a mess
I loved Maniac. I thought she was great in it. It was very stylized, and I can see it being polarizing.
Would have been nice to see the last season of Mozart in the Jungle nominated after it was so unfairly axed and has won Globes before. Agree who has even seen s.2 of Maisel yet, seems fixed. Happy about The Americans, A Very English Scandal was a macabre delight, would love to see it and Grant and Whishaw win. The Bodyguard was fun hot trash to be honest although Madden showed he is leading man material in it. There are like a dozen better drama shows on Netflix I can think of. I’m surprised Crazy Ex Girlfriend is so ignored, yes it kinda peaked but still what other show has original songs every week/why bother with the “musical” bit in the category?
Hahahaha wow I do not keep up with TV shows at all anymore! I haven’t had cable or network TV for a year now and only watch shows via streaming. The only shows nominated here that I watch are Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and The Good Place. I’ve been dying to check out Sharp Objects but it’s HBO and I do not feel like paying extra on Amazon Prime or Hulu for HBO until Game of Thrones comes back.
I know it just came out but I wish Forever from Amazon Prime had been nominated. It has Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen and it is so good!
Do people still pay for cable in this day and age? My parents are moving today and my father is canceling their satellite TV subscription. I think he’s going to keep their Netflix account and then get Hulu Live TV and that’s it.
Where is Schitt’s Creek? Catherine O’hara is insane in that role!
OMG, finally another Schitt’s Creek fan! They are all insane in that show. Thank you, thank you, thank you for validating my obsession with that show.
Did you hear there will be a holiday episode of Schitt’s Creek on December 19? So excited!
Apparently I watch way too much TV! I really loved Barry; it was one of my favorites of the year. That, plus Insecure and GLOW (comedies are my jam). Also surprised no one commenting mentioned the Tale; I know it’s really messed up, very real content but Laura Dern was amazing. It really resonated with me as a survivor, even though it is definitely triggering with a very realistic rape scene. Mrs. Maisel season 2 is pretty decent so far, albeit incredibly cheesy and overacted at times. It is still funny, though Mrs. Maisel can be annoying.
The Tale was so well done.
UGH! Yet AGAIN, Vikings is overlook and so is their cast.
I know Jason Bateman is kind of cancelled, but I’m watching Ozark now and loving it. He’s so good on the show (the whole cast is), and I’m glad it got that bit of recognition.
Why is Jason Bateman cancelled? I love Ozark!
He was kind of cancelled for defending or making excuses for Jeffrey Tambor’s abusive behavior and rudely talking over a crying Jessica Walter with other male AD castmates.
@Amilu: I’d forgotten about that! Thank you. Yeah, that was very disappointing. I like Jason Bateman a lot but I also get the impression that he seems like he could be a d!ck IRL.
I was a big fan of his but he really has disappointed me with all that.
I tried Ozark but couldn’t get into it.
lucy2, I’ve tried getting into Ozark more than once and I just can’t. Right or wrong, I just can’t shake the impression that it’s a budget Breaking Bad.
I really love Ozark too! I especially love the actress who plays Ruth (I find the kids kind of annoying, especially the daughter). I never watched Breaking Bad from everything I know about that show it sounds a lot like it. Only replace the drugs with money laundering (there are drugs involved but the Byrde family isn’t manufacturing drugs themselves like Walter White). I was not happy with Jason Bateman excusing Jeffrey Tambor’s bad behavior on Arrested Development but I don’t watch solely for him, I watch for the whole cast.
The actress who plays Ruth is phenomenal. I’m barely to the middle of season 2, and she just gets better and better. I think the daughter is annoying, too, but I kind of love Jonah.
I never watched Breaking Bad either. It seemed so shoved-down-my-throat as must-see tv that I just rejected it altogether (same with Mad Men and Downton Abbey). I’m annoying like that.
All the noms for women in comedy make me sad. They’re mostly awful shows. Really will and grace?? Murphy brown? Is that even airing yet? And is really a good place that funny? Mind u I find Kristin Bell irritating. I don’t have cable so idk and I’m defos not their demographic anyways. Wow how damn sad.
You have shows like insecure (w tons of hilarious women), I feel bad and maniac. These deserved recognition for putting something different in the world of comedy
Bless you! I find Kristen Bell to be so irritating in “The Good Place.” I swear she only knows how to act standing with her hands folded in front of her or stuck in her front pockets. I watched the first 2 seasons of “The Good Place,” but I couldn’t stomach starting season 3. I find it to be a lot of hype which is a bummer because I have loved other Mike Schurr comedies. I could (and have) written an article on why the show isn’t as great as so many believe and why Kristen Bell in particular is the wrong person to be the lead in that show. Penguin, I wish we could sit and have coffee and I could talk to you for an hour about why that show annoys me so much.
I feel the opposite – I think the Good Place is AMAZING and funny and so unique and smart, and Bell does a great job in the lead.
I LOVE The Good Place. It is so unique and I love all of the characters, great ensemble.
The Murphy Brown nomination surprised me. That reboot was so awful and not worthy of Candace Bergen’s talent.
Justice for the Americans indeed! I started bingeing that show about 2 months ago on Amazon prime and I am absolutely hooked (currently mid way thru S3). Both Kerri and Matthew are fantastic in their roles.
So glad to see the Good Place get some love too, and GLOW. I think this is a good set of nominees.
I just started watching it, too, and am only in the middle of S2. I do like most of the performances but a couple times I’ve laughed out loud at the cheesy dialog. It’s hard for me to tell if Richard Thomas is a wooden actor or if that’s how his character is supposed to be, lol.
It’s sooooooooo good! My heart would burst if Keri, Rhys & the show won 🙂
Wait…not a single nomination for The Haunting of Hill House? Seriously?!!
Hopefully the Emmys recognizes it next year. It was very well done.
I hope so, too! It was excellent and the acting was phenomenal.
I had forgotten about that one. It was really good!
OMG… Watched THOHH this week, I haven’t been able to sleep properly the whole week. I think its appeal was that most of it was left up to your imagination. My husband wasn’t scared but I haven’t showered with a door closed, or slept without a passage light on 😉
Nothing for Westworld????
Maybe you need to expand your social media following if you haven’t heard of most of these shows lol or watch more Netflix and Hulu? Because I’m at least familiar with all of the titles.
I’m so glad to see Pose nominated, it’s such a big deal that it even exists so to see it get this kind of recognition is incredible.
I don’t get the hype for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel tbh. It seems so boring and stereotypically “quirky”.
I hope the Americans win a few awards, I just started watching the show and it’s so good!
If Darren Criss does not win his category there is no god. (Actually, I don’t believe in god, but you know what I mean).
Am I missing something? I don’t understand why they used a photo of Issa Rae in the post when I don’t see her or Insecure nominated (I love her & the show, so I kind of wish they were noms) for anything or mentioned in the snubs? I could be blind, though.
Exactly what I came to ask! I just got so excited at her photo and thought I must have somehow missed her name… But further inspection tells me she’s not nominated. Why’s her picture here??
Lol I just Control + F’d Issa for that same reason. So she got snubbed?
I wish Dear White People on Netflix would get some love. GREAT cast, writing, etc. Unfortunately the title scares people away.
It is a great show.
I do like The Good Place. Is it rivetingly funny? No, but it makes me giggle. I don’t mind Kristen, but when I see the show, I see it for the ensemble, not just her. The East Indian /British actress is funny, pretty and I love the cute break dancer guy (Asian?) and Ted Danton is just a big goof-ball.
The Ozarks is intense. I really like it. I think it’s more hard core than breaking bad. I was a BB fan too, had a crush on Jessy. But I think the young actress who plays Ruth got snubbed. She’s got the best role in the show. I think she’s supposed to be 19 or 20 and she has so much to overcome. And her hair is to die for (I know , shallow).
The Handmaids Tale is everything! I got the free trial from Hulu just to watch it/binge it. I’m glad Yvonne got a nom. I know a lot of people don’t like Elizabeth Moss for her Scientology stuff or whatever, but she acts the heck out of that role! One thing I did notice: It seems the handmaids all seem shorter than the wives and the Marthas for the most part. Am I imagining this? Was it done on purpose? I guess than handmaids do have to be around the same height to get those glorious formation shots.
Sharp Objects is great, but very disturbing and has a slow start. Amy Adams chewed the heck out of a role type she rarely gets cast in. Patricia Clarkson is great too,
(I’m rambling, but one more opinion)- Mrs. Maisel. Well, my mom Loves it! I had fun watching it with her. I like the mother. It’s funny that she only looks about 5 years older than her daughter. It’s cute, but I already have a ‘cute’ show for when I need it and that’s The Good Place.
Ok, good night:-)
Benedict is fantastic in/as Patrick Melrose. Shows his range. Such a powerful and intense mini series. I’m glad he’s at least nominated for that part.
