The SAG nominations snuck up on me this week, I forgot that we would be getting them so early. The SAG Awards don’t air until January 27th, at 8 pm on TNT. I really love the SAGs – they seem like the nicest awards show. Anyway, I felt like the Golden Globes nominations messed up some of the categories, and let’s see if the SAGs made it right. I recently saw BlacKkKlansman and can I just say? I was blown away by Adam Driver’s performance. He was SO good. John David Washington deserves recognition because he was killing it too, but Adam Driver stole every scene he was in. A Star Is Born is still “the favorite” and the established front-runner this Oscar season. I also think The Favourite is going to get Oscar nominations for all three women, just like at the Globes and now the SAGs. We can also see that the Best Actress race is all over the place – still no Viola Davis for Widows (booo) but Glenn Close and Melissa McCarthy are surging. What else? Vice seems to be doing well across the board, and it feels inevitable now that Black Panther will be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. As it should be.
Also: it’s really cracking me up that Julia Roberts’ big Oscar-bait film Ben Is Back keeps getting snubbed.

Oh good lord these nominations are embarrassing. Bohemian Rhapsody for ensemble? Hollywood does love it’s mediocre white men! 😂 No Widows. No Beale Street (No Regina King???). Emily Blunt twice with the help of blatant category fraud? Oof. A few good inclusions but mostly? Embarrassing.
Category fraud is honestly one of the reasons why I don’t pay that much attention to awards anymore. For example, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz are not supporting actresses in The Favourite. They are leads and therefore that’s where they should be nominated. But the category fraud occurs so that these people ensure their nominations. It may not matter in a year when there are few great performances but for example this year I felt like there were a lot of great supporting performances by actresses and they’re getting left out because of category fraud.
I never take these awards seriously except from an interest in the ass kissing and campaigning that goes into it (the THIRST!). That part is HILARIOUS!! But with the increasing category fraud and ridiculous PR games, the various awards shows seem to be trying harder and harder to make sure no one takes them seriously! Calling Emily Blunt supporting in A Quiet Place is dishonest to a baffling level.
@MIA4S Emily Blunt’s nomination is so weird because she also got a best actress nomination. I know they’re two separate roles but still.
But yes thats all these awards are. It’s not about who is the best or whatever. It’s about who campaigns the most. But I get a laugh at those who campaign and are thirsty but then get left out. This year it’s Natalie Portman and Julia Roberts lol

You’ve never heard of the term category fraud before? There are articles going back years. Most recently probably with Alicia Vikander and Viola Davis’s Oscar wins. It’s a widely used descriptor. But perhaps you’re new to following the industry?

Agree about Widows, but I thought the Bohemian Rhapsody emsemble played very well off each other. I’m struggling with Beale Street because I know the actors did great jobs and that’s what this is about, but I found the movie VERY slow.

Wow, really? I thought Rami Malek gave a good performance and the rest was a glorified Saturday Night Live sketch with a cool ending (Live Aid) that I could see the real thing of anytime I want on YouTube. Also, it has a bizarre undercurrent of homophobia under the guise of being LGBTQ friendly. Utterly dreadful movie for the most part. Glad I didn’t pay to see it! 😂
I’m curious, Mia4s, why do you think it has a bizarre undercurrent of homophobia? I think the performances were okay, but not to be nominated for Best Ensemble, I’d have to agree with that.
I get the feeling that the SAGs, just like the Golden Globes, have tried to nominate more popular movies than usual this year, and that’s why Bohemian Rhapsody features so heavily, along with A Star is Born, Black Panther and Mary Poppins. I wonder what will happen at the Oscars. They are so desperate for ratings, I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw the same trend.
@Mina that would take a long time to explain on a message board, but I can link you to two articles that I found (while googling and trying to figure out if I was imagining what I was seeing). I don’t 100% agree with both authors on everything, but they had a lot of the same issues I did. I’m not LGBTQ so my experience is limited by that, but I was very uncomfortable in how his introduction to the “gay life” was set up as something seedy and sort of forced (there’s apparently zero indication that’s accurate) and then HIV was the “punishment” that made him go “respectable”. (With the diagnosis fictitiously moved up two years to give that full effect). WEIRD vibes on this movie.

Mia4s that’s interesting, thanks for the links. I took it as more of a it was a problem being openly gay in the early years of the AIDS epidemic, but these are good points to reflect about.
The category fraud is weird. Emily was fine in that movie but it seems out so out of left field. I blame Disney.

Well, if you have three of the actors nominated in independent categories, it would be kind of weird if it wasn’t nominated for ensemble.
I don’t think Blackpanther deserves a best picture nomination but I guess better this one than any other Marvel or DC Movie (Can’t believe the Dark Knight didn’t get a BP nomination being much more deserving than all these new comic movies).
The Dark Knight missing out is the reason for best picture expansion at the Oscars. As for Black Panther, it is probably gonna get nominated for everything and lose all of them.
I saw Black Panther and my expectations were high b/c of the PR. I was so disappointed. But I think comic book movies are rarely good.
DC movies are kind of a joke, even by comic book standards, and I doubt that they will get any kind of recognition in the near future. Though that win for Suicide Squad came out of left field and was upsetting to many people, comic book fans and awards fans alike.
I still can’t get over Viggo Mortenson getting recognition for Green Book as best actor quality, that movie was ok at best.

Outstanding ensemble category is kinda embrassing. It looks like they voted in alphabetic order. How can The Favourite get three acting nominations and miss best ensemble? How can Black Panther get best ensemble nomination while even Michael B Jordan is not nominated?
Honestly I thought The Favourite cast and Vice cast would be also nominated for best ensemble.
I keep contact with a (former neighbor) Belgian movie journalist who thought for best ensemble «black panther »,Blackkkman »,Crazy Rich Asian » , »The favourite » and « Vice » (for him,The Favourite and Vice were an obligation for best cast)

Can’t figure out why “Crazy Rich Asians” would be nominated for anything, it wasn’t a good movie.
I’m rooting for Emily Blunt in a Quiet Place and Rami Malek.
Emily was great in A Quiet Place, but I would call her lead, not supporting.

Adam Driver has snuck up on me as one of my favourite actors. He just brings it, whatever that may be, to every role I have seen him in. I think we’re missing Saoirse Ronan and Ryan Gosling, but I haven’t seen a lot of these yet.
He’s great-one of my favorites. You’ve probably seen these, but if you haven’t, check out This is Where I Leave You, When We Were Young, and Paterson.
Granted I haven’t seen all the performances nominated but I can’t imagine that all of these actresses did anything superior to Amandla Stenberg in The hate u give. Girl was brilliant and should be on every list.
I’d love to see Kidman for Destroyer simply for the fact that Karyn Kusama directed it. Girlfight will always make me root for her.
And Eastwood has a movie opening this week. I wouldn’t rule him out for the Oscars. The Academy loves him.
Wow 2018 had no high quality films if you ask any of these awards things. Most of these movies are mediocre at best. I have yet to watch the favorite and vice, though. But this is a celebration of average pop culture stories and films. I don’t care who gets what.
Wow, the SAG nominating committee managed to pull off a set of a nominations and snubs that the Golden Globes could only aspire to. That being said, I think people try to line up ensemble w/ Best Picture too much, when this is more or less about the combination of work that the actors put in sprinkled with the overall impact of the film in some ratio. As such you get ensemble pieces that aren’t coming anywhere near Best Picture and Best Picture Frontrunners that shouldn’t be anywhere near an ensemble award. Black Panther, which I think deserves a Best Picture nod, has the benefit of top notch acting from everyone in the cast, same as Crazy Rich Asians, which I’d probably rank 12-13 in Best picture. ASIB feels like the usual Best Picture in ensemble than a “Every actor pulled their weight in this picture” nomination.
Regina King should have been nominated easily imo. It also looks like Foy Erased is becoming a thing. As for who wins BSA now, it really doesn’t feel like Amy Adam’s year imo. I also think Glenn Close is taking up all of the “overdue” oxygen in the room that could easily propel AA to a win.

Is Bohemian Rhapsody deserving of Best Picture? No. But I dont hate it getting an Ensemble nod, I thought all the Queen members were good and worked well off each other.
