Emily Blunt in Schiaparelli at the UK ‘Poppins’ premiere: stunning or overworked?

European premiere of 'Mary Poppins Returns' - Arrivals

Here are some photos from last night’s “European premiere” of Mary Poppins Returns. It’s just the London premiere, I don’t know why they’re calling it the European premiere, especially given that Disney will probably made Lin-Manuel Miranda and Emily Blunt travel to some other European countries (they were already in Paris earlier this week). This premiere comes on the heels of Emily’s surprise SAG Award nomination in the Best Actress category – as I keep saying, this year’s Best Actress race seems especially off-kilter, and before the SAG nomination, I would have said that there was no chance that Emily would get an Oscar nomination for Poppins. But now? I mean, she might.

For the London premiere, Emily chose a rich silk/satin gown in a brilliant blue. This is Schiaparelli Haute Couture, one of Tilda Swinton’s favorite labels. I could see this on Tilda, and I think it…might suit Tilda more than Emily? I mean, the color is gorgeous. But I LOATHE the sleeves. Ugh.

Meryl Streep in Elie Saab – she came out to support Emily, of course, but Meryl is also friendly with Rob Marshall, the director. Meryl’s ensemble is awful. (update: I honestly didn’t realize that Meryl is in the film!)

I don’t have an ID on Emily Mortimer’s dress, but it’s not good. Her style throughout this promotional tour has been kind of bad.

You guys, I genuinely feel sorry for Colin Firth. He’s still doing the happy-marriage thing Livia even though they spent months having to deal with the lingering scandal and legal issues of her affair. Ugh. Her dress is super-fug too.

I love the color of Emily’s dress, but it blends into the carpet which I find odd. A slightly different shade would have worked so much better.

I think the overall fit of the dress is great, and I wouldn’t mind the sleeves and the bodice if that was part of a blouse that she was wearing with a simple pencil skirt or something. As part of a gown – it is just a bit too much. But its not the worst thing out there.

If Colin and his foine perfect-for-expensive-suit-wearing a** wants to get back at Livia: I’M HERE!!!

  3. Betsy says:

I love her dress! Becks1 is correct that it kind of fades into the carpet, but otherwise – 1930s realness, which I believe is when the series was published. I couldn’t pull off such a look, but it is gorgeous and complicated and womanly.

Emily’s dress is Valentino! I actually really like it…

  5. JadedBrit says:

Oh no no no. NO. It’s SO Jean Harlow.

  6. Aims says:

I really admire Colin. He carried himself with class during the hell of his wife’s infidelity and the shitstorm after wards. Privately it’s a horrible thing to handle let alone having to deal with a jilted lover and the press. He’s a total class act.

      +1000

I do wonder if this will last – I can’t imagine truly forgiving something like that, especially given the fallout. But I guess you never know until you are faced with it.

    • Harryg says:

      He really did.

  7. chloe says:

I actually love her dress, the color is so rich and looks good on her.

I think some of these outfits may have been a last minute change – the temperature in London last night dropped dramatically, so the long sleeves and jackets would make sense.

  9. Mia4s says:

Bad planning honestly. It’s a good dress and colour and would have been amazing on a RED carpet. Here it just blends in. Shame.

Lin looks so good; and Colin of course. Sigh…Colin and his wife’s relationship is their business but I still feel terrible for their teenage kids when I remember that whole mess.

    • Tanah says:

I really like the dress, I think it’s seasonally appropriate and a lovely colour (despite the carpet camouflage going on). Where it would have looked better on Tilda Swinton, is that her hair is usually a lot sleeker. Perhaps a tidier ‘up-do’ would have worked better for Emily. There’s a fair amount of detail in the neck / bodice of the dress, the right hair is needed to balance it out.

    Isn’t Meryl in the film?

  11. Kealeen says:

Um, Meryl is there because she’s in the movie.

    • Suzie says:

Honestly, I like Meryl’s ensemble. She looks sharp, maybe like she is at a fancy business cocktail party instead of a premiere, but I like it. #hereforblackandwhite

  12. Barrett says:

I sometimes wonder especially in Europe if there is more acceptance of open marriages so for example Colin is ok with it. In the aristocracy or wealthy circles what bothers them more is airing the dirty secrets, they want to carry on on the down low.

  13. Lisa says:

I would have liked this better if it were just a blouse not a dress on Emily. Also the backdrop is not helping matters.

  14. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

I don’t necessarily like the dress, but I like it on her. She’s fully wearing it, and it works. Quite stunning and not a leg, bewb, stomach, bum in sight.

  15. Veronica S. says:

I love the cut and color of Emily’s dress, but I wish it was a different fabric. Satin never lays as nicely as you’d like, even if it does pick up the light beautifully.

  16. Serphina says:

Love Emily and love her dress. She is awesome sauce!

  17. Isabelle says:

The dress is gorgeous, a retro 40s dress style which works well on a lot of women but the color is a bit overwhelming. A neutral color would have been perfect dress.

  18. Lexilla says:

Would have been better on Tilda OR Cate.

  19. Grant says:

I don’t think Lin is wearing the sh!t out of that tux… I think it’s wearing him. It looks like the jacket and pants are a size or two too large.

    • Aoife says:

I wanted to say the same thing! Looks like a regular guy wearing a slightly too-large tuxedo. Totally fine but nothing to gush about!

  20. Katebush says:

I love the silhouette of the dress and I LOVE the sleeves but I’m not sure about the colour. I agree that this would love fab on Tilda.
