Regina King was nominated in two categories last night, Best Actress in a Limited Series, for Seven Seconds, and Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, for If Beale Street Could Talk. She won for Beale Street and her speech was amazing! She almost got played off by the music but they DIDN’T DARE.
The best part is around 2:05 where she says celebrities are criticized for using their soapbox but then she did that and it was triumphant.
Celebrities say we’re using the time to talk about ourselves when we’re on our soapbox and using a moment to talk about the system things that are going on in life.
Times up times two. The reason why we do this is because we understand that our microphones are big and we’re speaking for everyone.
I’m going to use my platform right now to say that in the next two years, everything that I produce… [will be] 50% women. I just challenge anyone out there who is in a position of power, not just in our industry, but in all industries… to stand with us in solidarity and do the same.
Now I have chills. I saw this last night of course but rewatching it again is getting to me. I want to see Beale Street, even though I know it will make me cry. The part where she thanked director Barry Jenkins and said “my son said to me that it was the first time he really saw himself” got to me. Speaking of her son, Ian, who turns 22 this month, he went to the Globes with his mom. Their interview with Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet is below. Look at Ryan touching Ian’s jacket at :40 in. Their interview was almost over when Regina pointed out Ian’s Time’s Up pin. SHE KNEW WHAT SHE WAS DOING. She is subtly calling out Ryan for being an abusive a-hole and Ian took the hint and ran with it.
Regina was in an amazing pink sequin Alberta Ferretti gown. I love the detailing and the pattern differences in the beading. This must have taken hundreds of hours to make. Also in Alberta Ferretti we have Yvonne Strahovski of The Handmaid’s Tale looking lovely and understated and Judy Greer. Greer wore a full on oversized suit with a giant bow tie! Points for looking unique I guess but this could also be called a clown suit.
Y’all, @ReginaKing should be the winner of everything. Plus she is the nicest human ever.

God I love this woman
Queen!!!!
i think her dress was the best of the night. Just gorgeous and she looked beautiful in it.
Regina is great. So glad she won. And so glad she and Ian talked about safety in the workplace. I’m still amazed that Seacrest never had to truly deal with the allegations against him.
Love Regina!!!!
She was amazing in Poetic Justice and 7 Seconds. Glad she finally is getting her rewards.
I love her in a way I love very few others in Hollywood. Just a tremendous talent and an amazing person. Long live Regina King!
I do as well. She’s had a lot small-ish roles over the years but is always terrific in any amount of screen time they give her. She seems like a real pro, and frequently underrated.
Yes, she is an amazing actress. And, not to be shallow, but she is smoking hot! My husband saw her on the red carpet and was like, “wow, I need to rewatch her movies.”
Showing my age-loved her since the TV series I’ll Fly Away with Sam Waterston.
“Beale St.” is so good. Pleasantly surprised to see cameos from Pedro Pascal and Diego Luna. And Regina, this woman is aging backwards.
I am so happy that after a long time in the business doing amazing work, Regina is finally getting recognized with awards! I really want to see Beale St.
She looked gorgeous and gave a fantastic speech.
She was amazing. And I thought she looked perfect, too, every detail was just right.
Regina has done consistently great work, no matter the character, from “Friday” to “A Thin Line Between Love and Hate” to “Ray”. She’ll get that Oscar really soon (I’m rooting for her this year).
She is such a good actor. I’m glad the accolades are finally happening for her.
Regina for the win! She was the best dressed last night IMO. I have always loved her. She was the best part of Jerry McGuire. I’m going to see Beale Street movie this week.
Yay for dark-skinned women in pastels! Gorgeous color on her.
Amazing actress!!! I’m glad she’s taking an award home. Beautiful woman, incredible actress and seems to be a great human being! Hope to see her in many other series and movie and that she get much more recognition!
For a former child actress (227) she segued into one of the best actress of my generation. So happy for her.
What’s with Ryan Seacrest pointing at everyone? Didn’t he learn that was rude?
This dress is beautiful!!! Reminds me of these pink sequin 5″ wedges i used to own- but the dress is 10000x less tacky 😂
She was the best dressed of the night, she was perfection in that dress.
I love that she and her son obviously have a close bond. I also love that they spoke of time’s up and safety in the workplace for all. It’s important for both women and men to call for change.
