Nicole Kidman is on the cover of People Magazine, she’s promoting her awards-baity role in Destroyer, where she plays a hard scrapple undercover agent. She’s only been nominated for a Globe so far, but we’ll hear the Oscar nominations in two weeks. It’s by the writers and director behind The Invitation, a solid horror thriller starring Logan Marshall-Green. (I really enjoyed The Invitation, it’s on Netflix!)
The first segment released from Nicole’s interview focuses on her relationship with husband Keith Urban. I never thought that Nicole and Keith would still be together in 2019. Keith went to rehab just a few months after they got married in 2006 and there were some cheating rumors. They weathered that storm and are one of the most solid and sickly sweet celebrity couples. They give the impression that they’re really like that and it isn’t a put on. Nicole told a story to People about the moment she knew Keith was “the one,” it was when he showed up with flowers at her doorstep at 5 am. I want to roll my eyes reading this, but that’s my usual response whenever she talks about him.
Nicole Kidman had known Keith Urban for less than six months when she knew.
“It was my [38th] birthday, and he stood outside with gardenias at 5 a.m. on my stoop in New York,” Kidman, 51, tells PEOPLE exclusively in this week’s cover story.
“That is when I went, ‘This is the man I hope I get to marry.’”
Urban, 51, took her to Woodstock, N.Y., the site of the 1969 music festival, on a motorbike for a getaway (“My kind of guy!” she says), and she’s never looked back.
“It was pretty intense,” says Kidman, whose gritty drama Destroyer will be released wide this month. “I believed by that point he was the love of my life. Maybe that’s because I am deeply romantic, or I’m an actress, or I have strong faith as well, but I just believed, ‘Oh, okay, here he is.’”
The two married a year later at a romantic wedding in Manly, Australia, and have since settled down in Nashville, where they’re happily raising their two daughters, Sunday, 10, and Faith, 8.
For his part, Urban was always equally smitten with his Oscar-winning bride. He tells PEOPLE, “I could sum up Nic as a wife, mother and human being in three words: She’s all heart!”
I’m glad they’re happy, I do buy them as a couple, and I’m sorry for being such a cynical bitch. Ooh I’ll tell you when I knew someone was a keeper. I don’t believe in “the one” or “soulmates” or anything, but I knew after he also mildly disliked Blade Runner 2049. There were about five different movies, some of them critically acclaimed, which we both didn’t like (Annihilation, Three Billboards, Hereditary) and others which were supposed to suck which we loved (The Meg). Have you ever gone to a movie which you either love or hate and your friend has the exact opposite reaction? It depends on how close you are with them, but that can really test a relationship. (I was mad at a friend who disliked The Incredibles 2. I take movies too seriously, don’t I?)

Imagine if she had hooked up with Jimmy Fallon.
That story to this day just shows what a doofus Fallon really is.
Haha I forgot about that awkward interview where Jimmy brought it up, I think Nicole would have been happy had it been left unmentioned. Being married to Jimmy Fallon would be like being married to a child I feel. So exhausting and full of fake fawning laughter.
Big splashy happy in love articles in People. I never trust those articles.
I will take it further and say, I distrust anyone who declare “he is the love of my life” because of some splashy, romantic thing one does in the beginning of a relationship. Being romantically and passionately in love usually is a phrase and it passes. The question is will he stick around during hard times and if there is love and respect aside from passion. And this is the thing. Most of us can not know that until many years later and this is why marriages and relationships break down. We don’t know the answer to that not only about our partners but even about our selves. This is why determination and commitment – personal traits tell you more about you and about your partner that flowers on a birthday.
Very true.
@SM, I completely agree!!! Weirdly this is also when I realized that my husband was the one for me – when I had an emotional breakdown (I have severe anxiety, BPD and recurring eating disorder), all he did was just be there, support me and at the end of it all he wanted was to make sure o was okay. THIS is when I felt he was the one.
Anyone can do big splashy romantic gestures but would he/she still be there when things get rough?
Very wise words and oh man did I need to hear them today ❤️
Oh I don’t know..I can be very forgiving of people who are in the initial throes of infatuation because it’s easy to get caught up in that. And I actually do think that if you’ve found the right person, infatuation can transition to a lasting, loving, mutually-respectful relationship. I do agree with you though that those little trials and tribulations and how both people handle them form the foundation of a healthy, solid relationship.
People needs a fact-checker, as do Nicole *and* Keith apparently. The concert Woodstock did NOT happen in Woodstock, NY!!! Everyone who goes there will inevitably be told that as they wander around looking for “where Woodstock happened.” “Not here,” everyone who lives in Woodstock replies, somewhat impatiently at this point. Bethel, NY, Keith. If you are a musician you should know better.
Glad you got that out of your system Bella.
OMG I loved the Meg.
Right? It knew what it was and it embraced it. Plus shirtless Jason Statham.
I though I was the only one. But I’m a sucker for bad creature features, and as far as shark movies go (I’ve seen them all), it was entertaining! And I’ll endure almost anything for Statham.
If I have to dig any celeb couple – I so would dig these two.
I knew my husband was the one when he told me he loves me ‘but obviously not as much as the dog’. Obviously.
The heart works in mysterious ways. Lol.
@claire. Now that, i can believe. Sarcasm and honesty. Definitely an indication of authentic/successful relationship.
I knew my husband was a good guy when he stopped by my apartment for the first time early in our relationship and was so sweet to my pom-chi pupper. He was petting and scratching on her, and talking to her in a cute voice.
What do you think she is doing to her face? Fillers? She looks unnaturally plump but at the same time old. Seriously, I know ladies with wrinkles but looking much younger at 50. Lately I’m thinking about aging and Botox seems like a bad idea. Even uber rich ones can’t do it well. Maybe slught face lift would work better…
I don’t know but those eyebrows are so dark against her hair. I can’t see anything else.
The older she gets, the lighter her hair gets. Meh ⬇️. You are so right! So many celebs are in that same boat, too.
the face and the hands dont match.
She overfilled her mouth a while ago. She used to have a small cute mouth. The nineties worm lips must go.
His hair is super dated and irritating.
Totally. It’s seems like it’s always just about to fall in his face. I feel like they both go get the same things done. Too many fillers.
Yes. I think he needs an intervention about his hair.
His hair drives me crazy. It’s a stupid, superficial thing, but I can’t stand it.
They seem happy though, and I’m glad for her. I do want to see Destroyer.
I can’t stand that flat ironed, waxed hair either. Ew! It makes me not even like his music which is odd because he’s incredibly talented!
Her own curly red hair was so great! I get it’s hard when you go gray, but still, her hair now is awful.
His entire style is SO tremendously 2003. I am glad she got a decent fella, though. She really does have such a big heart, and she just wants to love and be loved. I’m so glad Tom left her (did you know she miscarried as the result of him blindsiding her with the divorce?) so that she could move on and have a proper life. Tom has always been a horrible little sh*td*ck. I cannot stand him. He was always so arrogant, controlling, even in his earliest interviews. His role in Thunder Tropic seriously scared the hell out of me, same thing as when I found out Katie was pregnant with Suri. I’m not joking, when I saw the pictures my stomach just clenched up as if I’d seen a violently graphic image. When I saw him in that role, same thing happened. That is EXACTLY how I imagine he is in real life. I’d take Keith Urban’s 2003 Country Music Awards Host style over Tom Cruises’s literal insanity aaaaaaany day.
I would stab anyone (gently with a fork) who came to my door at 5am not want to marry them.
Same!
Yup.
I loved Incredibles 2, Jack Jack was great!
After my friend disliked that I was like “maybe we don’t have that much in common.”
My 5yo deemed it too scary (the hypnosis totally freaked him out). I disregarded his dislike for it, bought and downloaded and watch it all the time. He still leaves the room when it’s on. Except for Jack Jack and the Racoon bit, that part is hilarious apparently. Mother of the Year.
I know people see to consider Urban hot but I find him so unattractive. Blech. They do seem to be solid, I guess.
I am the same way about books that CB is about movies. I was out with a couple friends, one of them someone new, and we were talking about a book and at the same time I said “I loved it,” she said “I hated it” and I suddenly saw her in a different light, lol.
he’d have a chance at being attractive if he cut that hair. he’s permanently stuck in 2004 with that style and highlights
He has started to look like Mohamed Hadid.
There’s an ongoing rumor on the island where we have a vacation home that Nicole and Keith are building a home a few blocks away from our own. I hope it’s true! They seem lovely.
I love a strong relationship story. It’s very sweet and special. Good for them .
I knew my husband for 10 years before we fell in love. Once we fell in love it only took me a few months to know he was it forever. And this was after a seven year relationship with another man, during which I never felt that intense assurance.
My husband walked along the beach, we weren’t even engaged yet. It was evening and I sat on the dunes and watched him, he walked slowly towards me, calm and happy, and it washed over me so peacefully and sure that he was the one I would marry and be happy with forever. And I cried happy tears watching him approach me from the ocean. I was so sure if it all. Nine years, two kids later and we are very happy and in love still. And I’ll never forget that moment of “knowing”.
Aw that’s such a sweet story. Congratulations to you both ☺️
I know I’m late to the party, but this is SO sweet. Thank you for sharing it. <3
I remember a interview she did with Crowe shortly after he went to rehab and marriage and family came up. Crowe told her she did not have to talk about it but she said she wanted to and was quite honest and earnest about where she and Urban were. That was when I became a Kidman fan.
Yeah? See, Nicole is one of my favorite actresses but I find her so…vapid. I think she’s fairly religious and maybe even conservative, which always makes me think differently about a celeb.
That being said, I think she’s one of the greatest actresses of all time.
(Don’t @ me!)
I don’t know why she finds that story cute. Get off my stoop and come back at a reasonable hour!
Maybe she had an early call time or flight, and he wanted to be the first to wish her a happy birthday? I’m gonna go with that one… lol.
Wasn’t he abusing cocaine early on in their relationship? I’d think he’d been on a bender or something.
Yep! My story would be that he did’t disturb me so that I got a full night’s rest, and then after he knew that I was awake – and only then – did he come in and rub my feet, then fix me breakfast or lunch. lol
LOLS most cynical people ever 😉
I like them. Hope it continues tonorknfoe them. Totally agree about when a friend or partner has a totally different take on book or movies. I start to hear horror-movie music in my head and look at them differently. Thing is, this difference in how we think will also extend to a lot of other things. A former friend and I never agreed on movies. She also hated unions and liked Trump.
Nice topic! I’ve always found them very cute together though his style choices aren’t my thing.
I have a special someone, it’s only been a year but for me it was when he was so sweet, kind, encouraging and supportive of me when I was in a bit of an ugly messy situation that was for sure partly my fault. Tied with him helping me move in the summer heat while he was completely fasting for his religion. (He was a smoker and coffee drinker at the time so it was extra painful!) being able to rely on someone when it’s hard is huge for me after my horrible ex.
Gardenias though! I can’t even make my plant flower and she has them just cut and carried by her love to her doorstep! Nice life
I can’t believe I’m saying this as a 61-year-old but I met a wonderful guy last year. I knew he was for me when I was sick but wanted to spend some time outdoors. He took me out to his orchard and built a fire in a brick fireplace and made me a cheeseburger while I just sat and watched him work. Old people fall in love too!
Well hell, Nina, if a man told me to visit him in his orchard while he cooked for me on his antique brick fireplace, I’d be halfway out of my pants before we got outside, lol.
This made me giggle harder than I have in a very long time.
@Veronica – I’m reading this on the plane and I’m having to quietly chuckle to myself lest I disturb my fellow passengers!
Aww I think it’s MORE romantic than young love because young love is often just naive love lol
I’m so happy for you Nina!! I’m 66 and dated Mr. Jaded back in the 1970’s. He dumped me for another woman who turned out to be a total flake, albeit very pretty, a well-known singer with a stunning voice and was ALL OVER HIM. They married quickly but he soon realized she was very unstable, untrustworthy, neurotic, self-obsessed, etc. etc. They had a child but as soon as she was grown and out of the nest they divorced and he came looking for me. After chewing him out and demanding an apology (better late than never), we started seeing each other and 4 years later here we are deeply in love. So yes, even oldsters find love, sometimes the second time around.
YES! I love stories about older people falling in love. Gah. So sweet.
Woodstock (the music festival) was not in Woodstock, NY.
It was held in Bethel, NY.
C’mon, People Mag.
Oops, I said the same thing above before seeing your comment.
Can we be friends because Hereditary sucked and the other 2 were yawn-inducing?
Let me also say Bird Box was so incredibly irritatingly stupid, like a satire.
Meh, I’m pretty sure she said the same thing about Tom Cruise (ugh) way back when…
I like the dress, especially the color..
It’s like they’re morphing into each other.
I think they are sweet and Lord knows she deserves happiness after her marriage to that nutter.
I used to write poems about love. Then I fell in it. Out of it. Rinse and repeat.
In the end, I realized there’s different types of love; one that is hyperbolic, one that maintains.
The former is just an extension of your “wants” at the time, the latter is your “needs” at all times.
