I was sick as a dog all day Sunday, but I managed to watch some of the Super Bowl. I felt like… it wasn’t a great game? The commentators were talking a lot about how defensive both teams, the New England Patriots and the LA Rams, were being in the first half, and that was evidenced by the halftime scoreline: 3-0, Pats. In the second half, the Patriots managed to squeak out the win, 13-3. It was one of the lowest-scoring Super Bowls of all time. But hey, it got Tom Brady his sixth Championship ring, and now endless sports-analyses pieces are being written about how Brady is the GOAT of all GOATs and the Patriots are the football dynasty to end all dynasties:
Place that hate in your hands, hold it like a fistful of beach sand and then let it slowly dissolve through your fingers until it is going, going, gone. The New England Patriots deserve nothing but your unmitigated respect and admiration. Simply put, we likely will never again see anything like them in our lifetimes.
For the 44 states in the union that don’t call the Patriots the home team, Sunday night should mark the end of a dysfunctional relationship and the beginning of something pretty special. New England beat the Los Angeles Rams 13-3 in Super Bowl LIII, winning ugly to claim its sixth championship since the day in September 2001 that sixth-round pick Tom Brady took the field as a gaunt and barely coordinated game manager and started developing into the finest football player who ever lived.
It’s time for the nation to embrace the non-debate. The Patriots’ dynasty is the greatest in the history of American sports, college or pro, and the contempt for it outside Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Connecticut should be eliminated along with the Rams.
And yet… I feel nothing? I always feel nothing when the same people or the same teams continue to win. It’s boring. But hey, I always root for the underdog, not the dynasty. I guess this means that Brady will avoid the retirement questions for the rest of the year, and he’ll likely feel that he has the go-ahead to keep playing until he’s 45.
Also: I’ve always thought that Pats’ wide receiver Julian Edelman is “the hottest Patriot,” so I’m pleased that he received the MVP title.

By all accounts the game was dull as dishwater all the way around, so the glory is most manufactured. The Rams may have lost but they held New England to 3 points for most of the game and they only won by 10, so I don’t think they have a lot to be ashamed of.
I wonder if Fat Nixon still thinks football is dangerous now that his basic bitch friend won the Super Bowl again? If he shuts down the government again, will they serve the Patriots McDonald’s too? You know, because it is beautiful AMERICAN food? Will Gisele let her husband go this time? Ohhh, the anticipation.
I am VERY curious to see how many team members go, and how many don’t.
you know Kraft will go as he and 45 are bros, and Belichick, too, probably, since he endorsed the orange fuhrer as well. but I think all eyes will be on Brady and whether or not he goes.
x2 I’m intrigued. Brady skipped the last time they won and said it was due to a family commitment. Putin’s puppet was pissed he wasn’t there.
Imagine Brady refusing the cold Big Macs…
Quite a few players skipped out two years ago. I don’t see Donta Hightower or Patrick Chung changing their minds this time
Duron Harmon just announced he will not go to the White House. He’s the first; I expect there will be more.
@Grabbyhands, “Fat Nixon!” Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!
🙂 I’m glad you liked it! I can’t take credit for it – the mod for one of the pages I follow on FB coined it (I think) and it was so perfect I have been using it.
Brady doesn’t eat that $#it so it would be interesting to see if he would eat it if he went.
It’s just that simple – one day at a time he works his god forsaken arse off every day to get to this point. Brady is the GOAT. We will never see this again in ANY sport in our lifetime. I’m going to choose to be in awe of his commitment-it’s beyond the limits of mere mortals, like me..
Um, @Babarabar, gonna challenge that, hard. If you watch basketball like so many people, you might remember someone named Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. Might have heard of Lebron James formerly of the Cleveland CAVS, Miami Heat, and now Lakers. Might wanna check out tennis as well – ’cause we got Serena, Venus, Nadal, Federer in the modern era..
If you truly ever watched basketball, you would scoff at those LeBron and Jordan claims because Bill Russell is the greatest of all time.
But Brady tied Michel Jordons record for league wins yesterday so Barbara is correct, nobody has done this in the NFL before, it IS history.
I’d vote for Serena as the GOAT of all sports. Brady for football maybe, but it’s also a team sport, so harder to judge.
Sorry I think if you are doing all sports you’ve left off the great one, Wayne Gretzky. He has more records in a sport which has a very long season, than any of the guys you mentioned above. As much as I love Serena, and I do she has yet to surpass Margaret Court in several categories. I know the sport was different then, but she so needs to pass that woman.
meh..athletes are getting faster, playing longer and stronger. Science, food & physically, is improving their play, We will see it again. We will have super athletes but the time we are old. Brady is great player no doubt but there will be players after him there is always is someone to take your place sooner or later.
i’m way more impressed with serena as an athlete, winning tournaments while pregnant.
tom brady is just a quarterback on a team. hard to feel like he’s the greatest when there’s lots of other guys on his team who also play a role in the team winning like this.
Eh, I want to like the Pats, really, I do….but I just cant with TB. I even like Giselle in all her goopiness…but I just…nope.
even after she made the comment about tom not being able to throw and catch the ball at the same time? that was so tacky and rude to slam his teammates like that. she seems to think her husband can do no wrong and that’s such a bad attitude.
Most boring Super Bowl but it gave the oft-overlooked Patriots defensive players a chance to shine, even though it cost Patrick Chung a broken arm. They all stepped up. For me, the most exciting moments were when Vivienne Brady, Londyn McCourty and whatever her little cousin’s name is, all grabbed the microphones from their fathers during the interviews after the game. And then Phyllis Harrell, mother of the McCourty twins, stole the interview away from all of them.
Great season, Rams fans. Your team played a tough game last night. better luck next year.
And now, Duck Boat Parade tomorrow but today is Red Sox Truck Day AND Beanpot Monday. Go, Sox, Go Celtics, Go Bruins, Go BC-BU-Harvard-Northeastern!
As you know, we are lucky here in Boston and all of the saltiness just makes us stronger. 🙂
Hey congrats to you from Chicago. No salt from me.
Thank you, Minx!
Edelman was suspended the first four games of this season for performance enhancing drugs.
He’s a cheater. It’s the patriot way.
Exactly. The Patriots have been cheaters for a very, very long time. The NFL has been complicit in allowing that team to get away with murder for years- allegedly the NFL is very invested in the Tom Brady legacy + image his team projects to the world.
If that were the case, the NFL wouldn’t have suspended him for four games for refusing to give Roger Goodall his phone.
Cheaters? You can murder people, beat up your wives and girlfriends, take bunches of illegal drugs but don’t deflate the football, now that’s serious!
All Edelman did was to take some steroid formula to speed up his recovery after last seasons injury, you want to tell me that nobody else in the league tales performance enhancing drugs, come on!
@Mike other players doing it doesn’t mean an excuse for edelman. they should be busted too.
Yes. They get away with it because they know what Tom Brady and the Pats mean for the sport in general (including puff pieces like this one).
I am not one of those who thinks that the Patriots only win because they cheat. I do think Tom Brady is an excellent QB, and I do think that Belichick is a brilliant coach. That’s what ticks me off about the cheating. I don’t think they need to do it. I think they do it because they can, because it makes winning the teensiest bit easier, and there are no real consequences for them, so why not do it?
Yeah, that’s what baffles me about it. They’d probably win anyway, so why do it? Money can’y buy class, I suppose.
the other thing that irks me about the Pats (and a couple other teams/QBs) has to do with the officiating.
elite QBs are protected/babied by the refs. I’ve watched the Pats enough times to have seen roughing-the-passer calls on Brady that were, at best, questionable. like, he still had the ball when he was hit, hard, but not helmet to helmet or any other obvious foul. and there were a few hits on Goff last night that, had it been Brady, I feel fairly certain would have been called “roughing the passer” or “late hit”.
I think overall some highly competitive people cheat because they want to win and they don’t like the thought of losing. I mean look at Slim Nixon. He could have easily won his second election without Watergate but nope man was insecure and did the dirty deed.
I also think once you’re caught cheating. there will always be an asterick next to your name no matter what. You can’t wash that stench off. So kids, the moral of the story is don’t cheat!
The game, the half time show…. all a big snooze fest.
Enjoy your tray of cold McDonald’s burger and fries at the White House, Tom!
His wife won’t let him eat that.
Please. Don’t blame the wife. His ridiculousness is his own.
Glad I didn’t watch
That was a super boring game, and I thought Brady played pretty terribly for most of it.
Exactly. Brady is a good quarterback, but not the goat. Bellicheck is the goat coach.
In football he’s a GOAT. Coach Scotty Bowman of the NHL with 1244 career wins, is the GOAT.
It was a super boring game and a super boring half time show (except Big Boi) but our stadium and city looked beautiful! Can’t wait for Atlanta United’s season to start!
big boi’s entrance in the caddy and fur was the best part of the whole thing!
Except for the fur part.
@Lady D please read the article in sunday’s NYT style section
Over dinner with friends in NYC last night, we talked about not watching the NFL anymore. A poem that resonates with some of us https://twitter.com/HannahDrake628/status/1092033672478380032?s=01 #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay
Wow – thank you for sharing!
Snoozefest of a game. 😴
It was a boring game, for sure. The best part was when Romo’s mic stopped working and there was silence for a minute or two. He never.shuts.up.
I strongly dislike Tom Brady and the Patriots and its not because they always win. It’s because I think Tom Brady is a conceited jerk who feels entitled to a certain level of treatment by the league and the refs.
He does talk a lot, but I don’t him. I was just glad it wasn’t a network with Joe Buck or Chris Collingsworth, I can’t stand either of them.
I agree with Lucy…he does talk a lot, but I don’t find him annoying. he actually does good analysis of the plays.
also agree on Joe Buck. MOST USELESS “COMMENTATOR” EVER. nepotism at its finest.
Joe Buck makes me throw things
Heard that.
I usually turn down the TV volume and put on whatever radio station has the game to accompany the visual. he’s the worst.
tony romo seems dumb as a brick. i only remember him from when he dated jessica simpson so that seems fitting.
The teams played like they knew they’d be invited to the White House for cold fries and hamberders.
Rams breathe a sigh of relief…
The hubs says it’s Bill Belichick. We’re all aware Brady’s a box of rocks, maybe rocks follow directions well.
It is Belichick. I think Brady is a very good QB, and I think he would be good under almost any coach. But I think Belichick elevates him and the team. Belichick also has a lot of control over who the team drafts and signs. I don’t like him (what was he wearing last night??) but he’s brilliant when it comes to football.
When Brady was injured for that season and Cassel took over, the team still went 12-4? 10-6? something like that. Now granted Cassel took over as QB for a team that had gone 18-1 the previous season, so a lot of the “stuff” was in place, but still – to me that proved that Belichick is the real mastermind.
Just said something similar to another poster! Without that OL Brady is just standard good. Bellichek, Cheater or not, deserves the glory most of the time. And I’m a Steelers fan, so the hate is strong in me 🙂
Your husband is correct. Once Brady does retire, Belichick will find another Brady. Belichick is the brainchild of the Pats success and their mistakes.
Did not watch the cheat bowl.
But I am sure Orange white supremacist will send his aides out to Walmart to buy a couple cases canned clam chowder, some plastic spoons and invite his boys to the whitest Whitehouse , pop the can tops and tell them to dig in! He paid good money for that soup. And hey it is New England clam chowder!
Cheat bowl is right! The Team cheats, the Coach cheats, Brady cheats Edelman cheats. The only thing dynastic about this franchise is the monumental lengths they go to in order to cheat
Amen, Chef Grace!
I’m tired of it being the Tom Brady show or the QB show. It was a team effort, especially from the kickers. When Auburn won the National Championship in 2010 everyone went on and on about Cam Newton but it was Wes Byrum who kicked a 50+ yard field goal and won the game for us.
Like Edlemen or not he is. big part of Brady’s success and Belichick as well. Patriots overall are a good team.
St. Louis area fans were in a tough spot. Nobody here really likes the Pats, but they HATE the Rams owner (Kroenke) more for doing STL dirty when they left and the way they left. People around here hate-watched the game I think 😂
There were quite a few St Louis people at the game wearing Patriots shirts who were interviewed by the Boston media. They were hilarious
The only thing I like about the Patriots is Edelman, lol. *swoon*
First nice things, Tom and Gisele’s daughter is cute, so was Bill Belichick’s grand baby. Belichick is from Annapolis, and he comes back quite often to speak at Annapolis high school, his alma mater, the schools has a few issues here and there, and it’s a really nice thing he does. So I don’t have a problem with him. Tom is a great QB, and sometimes I think he get’s crap from people when he doesn’t always play as well as we have seen him, like last night, but it’s kind of in the must be a nice problem to have category. As much as I love defensive games, I’ve been a Raven’s fan for years, and I’m not sure they really know what offense is, this game was just dull. Maroon 5 didn’t help either. The only part I did like was Gladys Knight’s National Anthem and some of the commercials.
I didn’t even know Belichick was married. I thought he was single? He has kids and grandkids?
He has 3 kids, and I think he divorced his wife a while back though. His daughter is the Women’s Lacrosse Coach at Holy Cross, and one of his sons coaches with him.
He has 3 adult kids. His two sons work with the Patriots as a coach and a scout. His daughter coaches lacrosse at Holy Cross. Coaching seems to be the family profession because his father, a former NFL player, coached at West Point. He’s divorced but has had the same girlfriend, Linda Holliday, for about 10 years.
People took to the streets by the thousands last night to celebrate. The BPD has announced there was a grand total of ONE arrest, a drunken guy from Los Angeles who climbed a statue and shouted obscenities at the police. Well done, Bostonians! Keep the celebrations safe.
So much whining today 🙂
Let’s gooo! Thank God the 95 day drought since the Red Sox won their championship is over. GOATS
Yes, we are in desperate need of a duck boat parade. It has been SO very long since the last one!
Just came to say, his daughter is the spitting image of Gisele!
Lucky her then. I wouldn’t mind being the spitting image of a women who made millions off her looks.
