I honestly never think about Beyonce and Jay-Z being huge LGBTQ+ allies, but they really are. Jay-Z has spoken more in recent years about his mother’s journey as a gay woman, and Beyonce is of course surrounded by gay men and women, and she has a huge LGBTQ fanbase. So it’s not surprising that GLAAD would want to give them their Vanguard Awards. I guess the surprise was that Bey and Him showed up to the show and gave beautiful and emotional speeches. Beyonce also published some photos of their ensembles and their Vanguard awards, since they didn’t walk the carpet or anything.
It’s just a really nice speech from both of them, and I like that Bey notes that Jay is doing good work now to destigmatize LGBTQ people and acceptance in the hip-hop community. While the official GLAAD video edits out part of their speeches, there were fan-made videos from inside the awards show. So we know that Bey also made a reference to taking that ass to Red Lobster:
