Even though George, Amal, or others doing this will probably make little difference in the lives of gay and bisexual/pansexual people living in Brunei, it’s sort of like designers boycotting Melania and Ivanka. It’s a way of sending a message that this is unacceptable and a display of solidarity. A much better example of solidarity than, say, casually homophobic cracks about Jeremy Renner.
It’s a rerun– I remember the boycott of the beverly hills hotel a few years ago to protest. There are several other countries where being gay can lead to a death sentence, including a few where h’wood heads to film, party, and yacht.

I honestly don’t understand the collective shrug from the people that chose to comment on George Clooney. A law been enacted in which people proven to be gay will be stoned! What in the dark ages hell!? I get that George and Amal seem insufferable sometimes but this is one of those moments when the world at large needs to be clear that this is not acceptable. He is simply saying that if you don’t agree with this, don’t support it with your dollars. The people that use these high end hotels can do so. The Four Seasons is delightful.

The royal family of Burnei loves hollywood. A targeted boycott will put pressure on them to reverse the policy. This public boycott may be want reformers need to stand up to theocracy side within their country. When doing a boycott, you have to think it through. This one is targeted and may actually work.
I think people are annoyed at the hypocrisy of George Clooney and his ilk. Let’s boycott a hotel but we’ll still buddy up to MBS and the UAE even though they are just as bad, if not worse in the case of MBS/Saudi Arabia. Forget, boycotting they should divest but they won’t because that hurts their pocketbooks; he’s just playing lip service to human rights without doing anything meaningful.
Actually, they are trying to open up Saudi Arabia too. They are on the reformer side. Pressure and diplomacy are good things. George Clooney is using his fame for good in this case.
George Clooney is not responsible at all for the Theocratic government of SA or Brunei. He is using diplomacy and pressure to make targeted changes in their official policies for positive reform.
Targeted boycotts, public pressure and diplomacy are effective tactics for reform. Tough talk, doing nothing and war, not so much, This makes the country and life for the citizens there worse.
