Is anyone else already sick of Taylor Swift’s 4/26 pastel aesthetic?

Taylor Swift seen in a colorful outfit in NY

We haven’t even seen what Taylor Swift’s big 4/26 launch is, and I’m already over this aesthetic. Granted, I actually appreciate the fact that Taylor has been doing red carpets and getting pap’d in New York ahead of the launch, because it’s always nice to have new Swifty photos in general. She wants to be seen, and she wants her style-makeover to be discussed. But this sh-t is awful. Here are pics of Taylor out in New York yesterday wearing yellow cutoffs, a sparkly jean jacket and a pink tie-dye t-shirt. We got a promo email about the tee – it’s from n:philanthropy and it can be yours for $128.

People are still talking about Taylor’s fairy-queen drag at the Time 100 event on Tuesday night too. As it turns out, Taylor helped design that mess with J. Mendel. Mendel won’t confirm whether he’s designing something for Taylor to wear at the Met Gala, but I think he’s confirming that Tay will attend?

On Tuesday night, Taylor offered a glimpse at what her so-called “TS7”-era style will look like, hitting the red carpet at the Time 100 Gala at NYC’s Lincoln Center clad in a pale pink and yellow gown from J. Mendel that fit right in with her recent snaps of rose-colored ruffles and Easter egg-hued bicycles.

“Taylor always has a very strong point of view; she’s really extraordinary in how she transforms herself constantly,” J. Mendel’s creative director Gilles Mendel told Page Six Style of working with the pop star. “She always comes to me with an idea; in this case, the theme was pastel colors and soft tones. Luckily, my recent spring collection was very much about those tones, these beautiful pale citrus colors. So we started with my spring palette, and from there, we built up the dress. Taylor wanted a really ethereal, hand-pleated moment, which is something we’ve always done so well.”

The primary challenge of creating Swift’s outfit? Since she was set to perform an acoustic set at the gala, she needed a way to ensure her arms would be free to strum her guitar and play the piano without being encumbered by extra fabric. And as it turns out, it was Swift herself who came up with the solution.

“That bolero didn’t come from me — it was her,” Mendel revealed. “She had the vision of having some sort of cover that would give it a different volume than just a basic dress. So we developed, with our Gilles Mendel touch, this little hand-pleated, silk- sleeved bolero cover that I thought came out really stunning.” Best of all, the billowy-sleeved piece made Swift’s look convertible, so she could make a dramatic entrance on the red carpet and then shed it before she took the stage later in the evening.

And there’s good news for fans eager to shop Swift’s Time 100 ensemble for themselves. “I’ve never duplicated any of the dresses I’ve done for her,” Mendel said. “I’ve been with her twice to the Met Gala, and those two gowns are still in my archives. But after this experience … I think definitely, in the next collection, [there will be] some modification of what I’ve done for Taylor.” As for whether Swift and Mendel might make their third appearance together on the Met Gala red carpet next month? “Unfortunately, it’s so hard to give you an answer, because we never know until the very last minute,” the designer said with a laugh. “And it’s maybe bad luck to say, because you never know!”

[From Page Six]

As many have pointed out, Taylor’s 2019 aethestic isn’t really new for her – she used to do pastels and sorbet-colors all the time circa 2008-10, really. She used to wear tons of J.Mendel too – I remember when she first became a big deal, she wore Mendel’s pastel gowns to almost every red carpet. It sounds like she has a great relationship with him and that he allows her to “collaborate” on her looks. Taylor might benefit from a style relationship where she doesn’t call all the shots though – imagine if she worked with someone who had the balls to tell Queen Snake “honey, this sh-t looks terrible.”

Actually, no, I’m not really “sick of” that pastel, not really.
Why is it such a big deal if a pop star changes aesthetics for her new music? Isn’t that what most of them do?

    • virginfangirls says:

Do most woman pop stars drastically change their clothing style to reflect the theme of their new album? I don’t think so but maybe I don’t play close attention. I do remember Madonna doing it with her hair & makeup for each album (the blonde Marilyn Monroe look for ex) & Lady Gaga wore that hair bow forever (was that for an entire album?), but for most, maybe in a much more subtle way but I don’t normally recognize it. Of course people change style as they grow older & fashion of course changes, but I don’t recall this abrupt & dramatic style change for each album typical with most women.

      • Alissa says:

Gaga definitely had a different aesthetic for each album (the hairbow was the first one, I believe). Just look at the difference between Born This Way and her Tony Bennett phase and Joanne era. Madonna definitely did the same.

I think it’s become a thing lately now that it seems every album is an “era” for every star, despite only some of them really having distinct eras. Katy Perry comes to mind as someone who doesn’t really switch it up much except for her hair.

      • Kebbie says:

They all do it as a way to mark the change of era for them or whatever, it’s just more authentic seeming when it’s Gaga or Beyoncé. Taylor is very obvious about “this is the new me, this is my new style.” Subtlety is not her thing. She’s more like Miley Cyrus changing her style and personality for a new record.

      • oh_dear says:

Madonna is another one whose aesthetic changes drastically with her albums.

    • Chicken says:

Not sick of it, and I can’t freaking wait to see what she drops tomorrow. I am a job-having, tax-paying 35-year-old woman and I am so freaking excited.

      • Cherie says:

One of my favorite humans is a 38 year old professional mother of two who adores TS, I have to admit she has force fed me enough on road trips to make me appreciate and even (hides) enjoy a lot of it.
I don’t think her fan base has aged out as much as people would like to think. She isn’t 1989 popular but she’s hardly gasping for a career.

      • yiza says:

        ILY that’s really cute.

      • Case says:

26-year-old job-having, tax-paying woman here — also so excited! 4.26, wooo! I usually can’t make it past 10:30 p.m. but I might nap after work so I can make it until midnight tonight to listen, lol.

      • Chicken says:

@Cherie I actually think her old-Millennial fanbase is staying strong. My Taylor-loving friend (we’re the same age) went to both the 1989 and Reputation tours, and there just as many people and just as much buzz at the Reputation concert, and I noticed A LOT of fellow 30-somethings, including 30-something dudes.

      • ktae says:

Squeeeeee. Her instagram page just confirmed new music, she commissioned a mural with clues on a wall in Nashville.

Edit to add, I acknowledge that she can be problematic, but 31 year tax paying small business owner, and I can’t wait for new music

      • olive says:

why are we all talking about paying taxes and liking Taylor Swift?

    • Dee says:

I think the pinks and pastels look great on her, and work much better for her than the dark aesthetic of last year. She looks beautiful!

    • Cali says:

Every pop star I can think of has changed their look after every album. I LOVE the jacket and the shirt she’s wearing with the shades, but think that only she can pull off those shorts.

    • petee says:

Am I the only one that is just sick of her?

      • Teel says:

        Nope.

      • H says:

Nope, I’m completely and utterly sick of her. Compared to other songwriters, she’s a talentless hack. But I’m not in her age demographic.

      • Bee says:

I am not into her whatsoever, but I can see how she’s managed to convince her generation that she’s talented, because there is not much to compete. Music these days sucks so badly I genuinely feel bad for the youth of today.

    • Ramona Q. says:

This pale pink is the trendy color this summer, so she looks like 2019 summer, what’s wrong with that? So harsh.

    • Lilly says:

I’m not sick of it either. I love pastels. It’s Spring. There are such bigger things to worry about than Taylor Swift wearing pastels in Spring.

    • Maurene Donohue says:

I love it. We can use some up beat colorful beauty right now. So much negative and horrible things happening in our world. Celebrate Life Live in the Moment Enjoy the Beauty. Thanks Taylor for all of the above.

  2. Vee says:

I like it. She looks good. Her hair looks better than it has looked in years.

    • Erinn says:

I like most of it, but not all, I guess. I wasn’t really into the dress from the awards thing, but I like her more casual styles. Really like the jean jacket.

I’m noticing more and more tiedye lately just in general. Which – I like in more of a water color kind of way rather than the super bold versions that were everywhere when I was a kid in the 90s.

I’m also trying to wear more light colors – wearing a lilac cardigan and a white tank right now, which is pretty far from my normal blacks, navy and grays haha.

      • Alissa says:

I like the jacket and the shirt, I don’t think that shade of yellow goes with the jacket and shirt though. But I also thought that the shade of yellow on the dress was too bright for the pink.

I’m not over the aesthetic, because I think it suits her much much more than that faux-grunge-emo stuff she was trying to pull with reputation that didn’t flatter her at all.

My favorite though has been her style through Red and 1989. I am happy she’s stepping out again and being a bit more visible, it was pretty bland having her not really around through the reputation era. I actually liked that album a lot, but the whole aesthetic around it was…mehhhhh.

    • leskat says:

Yes to the hair!! She had that super mousy, dirty, dull dark blonde for way too long and it always dragged her look down. I know because I have the exact same natural hair color and it is only good with a little bit of brightness in it. I think the slight change in hair color makes her glow in a way she hasn’t in years. Now to just get rid of those bangs…
I’m kind of into whatever she’s going to try to sell me. I will be anxiously awaiting tomorrow.

      • Kebbie says:

Oh God that dishwater blonde was the absolute worst. She was so dedicated to it though! I remember loving when she bleached her hair (even though it was unflattering) just because it wasn’t that ashy bronde anymore.

ETA: It’s my natural color also, maybe that’s why we’re the harshest critics. I have to have highlights in mine.

      • Snowflake says:

Yes, she does look much better with this shade than the ash blonde color. And i am not a blonde fan at all!

  3. Lisa says:

    I am not into it.

    • Barrett says:

I don’t think pastels are her colors! Did you ever have your colors done? I think she is in a different section of the color wheel.

As my mama says these colors don’t do anything for her.

    • Capepopsie says:

      💯 agree!

    • Chaine says:

Me either. I don’t think the colors work with her skin, and I associate pastels with children/teens and the elderly, so they just look off on Taylor at her age.

  4. Valiantly Varnished says:

Well at least this twee vibe is more authentic than her “Now I’m a goth snake” schtick. But yeah I’m tired of it already.

    • Kebbie says:

We don’t know what it’s all about yet, but if it is a new record and the theme is rainbows and pastels and hearts or whatever she’s been hinting, it feels like a massive regression.

Her last record was supposed to be her shedding that old sweetheart image and growing up, even if that growth was forced on her by the receipts. This seems like she might be desperately trying to get it back. The imagery is straight out of middle school diaries.

But we don’t really know yet, hopefully I’m wrong.

      • Case says:

If anything, I felt the content of Reputation was a regression, honestly. 1989was about being yourself and enjoying your life/friends. It was a lot of love songs, but there was growth there. And no revenge songs as far as I can recall. Reputation, on the other hand, was mostly about revenge and toying with men for the heck of it and having a secret crush on a boy. Obviously we don’t know what this album will be yet, but it won’t be hard to top Reputation in my book. It was an awfully negative era, especially in the beginning.

  5. Emily says:

It’s so bad. She’s 30 and probably getting married soon. Couldn’t she try something more adult (and by adult I mean classy or sexy, not her pretend badass Rep look). It seems like she can’t do anything subtle, she takes a look and then goes way overboard on it.

    • Audrey says:

Emily – Really? So, a woman is limited to what she can wear based on her marital status and age?

      • Valiantly Varnished says:

I agree a woman can wear what she wants at any age. BUT. At 30 Taylor is still giving off the emotional maturity of someone still in their early 20’s.

      • Alissa says:

I don’t see why 30 is this magical turning point. (Also, she’s technically still 29 haha).

My sister is 34 and has 5 nose piercings, is covered in tattoos, and her hair is currently bright pink. She’s also a mom and married. Taylor can wear whatever style she wants. Heck, Madonna is still dressing like she’s Britney Spears’ age, and she’s the same age as my mom.

    • leskat says:

Sorry, I’m 37, married with 2 kids and I love the aesthetic. There’s nothing wrong with being of this age and wearing pastels and glitter and fairy sorbet dresses. There’s no such thing as what an adult should and shouldn’t be able to wear. If that’s how she’s feeling, I’m not going to tell her she “shouldn’t”.

    • GenericUserName123 says:

I am 31 and pregnant and have ombre pink hair & wear clothes from Anthropologie that I know would be described as “twee” on this site. I think the “adult” thing to do is to look how you want and not care if someone disapproves.

I think she’s having fun and I like it! It is very springy 🙂

      • Lexilla says:

Oh girl, if you’re connecting 31 and Anthro as a combo that would be critiqued, I’m in big trouble. I’m… a bit older and I can’t stay out of their sale room.

      • Chisey says:

I totally agree. I feel like having ‘adult tastes’ is a preoccupation for people who maybe suspect that they aren’t as adult or mature as they want to be. I used to stress about being mature a lot, but now I’m 34 and am just like, fuck it. If I want to listen to Taylor Swift and read YA or whatever, I’ll do it. Judge away. I’m done with all the junior high ‘oh I can’t let anyone know I secretly like this babyish thing’ nonsense.

      • Monicack says:

        Chisey
Come sit by me. You can have one of my juice boxes. You’ll have to open it However as my middle finger is constantly up.

      • (THE OG)@Jan90067 says:

Ha! I’m “a little older” than you guys, too, and I shop at Anthropology. And & Other Stories, and All Saints, and Ted Baker. There is no “adult” look, only a stereotype.

Wear whatever the &^%$ makes YOU feel good, whatever makes YOU feel “happy” or “sexy” or (insert your adjective here)… Life is *way* too short to live the way someone else *thinks* you should. You like pastel fairy sleeves? Go for it! You like Emo grunge? This way to the Doc Martins! Dress for yourself, dress for your mood(s), change it up or not. But don’t listen to what “they” say… listen to what “you” say!

    • Monicack says:

Do you not see the danger of assigning merit/agency to a woman based on what she’s wearing? At any age?

      • olive says:

these women typically appear on Kate Middleton posts but there’s a fair amount of them who will complain about women over 30 with long hair, or women with long hair wearing it down at work. Completely foreign and likely antiquated views to me and I’m in my 30’s so not even that young!

  6. Fiona says:

I like the pastels. It’s spring and it works for me.

  7. Cidy says:

Its spring, I feel like it’s fine. The only thing I dont like is that top denim jacket and that’s because it looks frumpy from the back but beyond that I dont mind the pastels.

  8. Kirsten says:

    I like it.

  9. NotSoSocialButterfly says:

I’m just kind of tired of Taylor Swift in general.

    • Dee says:

Not me! VERY tired of the Kardashians. Very tired of Trump. A pretty, talented pop star who changes up her look a lot and works hard is refreshing to read about.
If this site was 100% Taylor Swift and Duchess of Sussex, I would be happy!

      • AnnaS says:

@Dee exactly. Of course comparing anyone to K’s and tiny hands (no capital letters for him) is just too easy ha! anyway, worse things in the celebrity sphere that Taylor. Her “scandals” aren’t even real scandals when you think about it. she’s quite well put together.
Let me remind you she exist in the same world as Chris Brown, K’s, Yeezy, and a bunch of other often drugged out and violent musicians. so yeah, nothing to see here.

  10. Case says:

I like it a lot, actually. It is springy and happy. It fits her personality far better than her dark phase and is very on-trend. I get that she’s 29 and it’s a bit girlish, but it honestly fits with the color and general aesthetic a lot of women in Hollywood are wearing at the moment.

I also like that she reinvents her look for every album. It keeps things interesting. *shrugs*

  11. Lila says:

The aesthetic I really want her to embrace is called “adult.” You know, the whole accept your mistakes, learn from them, stop making everything you say and wear a reference to some petty feud in your life.

But on a side note, red lipstick doesn’t go well with pastel.

  12. Croatian says:

TBH, I really disliked her visuals from Reputation era, it was just so… ugly 🙁 I mean the whole colour scheme and combinations, everything was blah, and it was so out of character. I know people can change their look, but she really didn’t look like herself.
So, I actually like this, but I find the problem to be that it’s soooo different from Reputation that I now feel like she realized she was faking the Reputation look (and sound!!). That was not her. This is her!

    • Case says:

I agree. I’m a Slytherin so I liked the snake merch (lol)but the fonts and color scheme could’ve been cool, but was poorly done. The sound and look was definitely her trying to be edgy and failing.

  13. Big Bertha says:

So much money. So little taste.

  14. Jen says:

I don’t know, as a child of the ’80’s (1984 baby!) I’m kind of fan-girling over this look. I saw one of those beaded tassel cat shirts the other day and almost bought it out of sheer nostalgia. I really hope those are part of her clothing line.

Everything comes back around. Yes I agree that she has had better “looks” that are more flattering, but hey this is fun! It’s cute! Would y’all be happier if she was dressing like the Kardashians and/or culturally appropriating looks?

    This is fun, it’s light-hearted. I like it! 🙂

  15. Jb says:

I see the Taylor diehards have overtaken the comments section. Taylor’s outfit is awful and basically she’s getting dressed so she always matches with her bag of Easter brand skittles. Maybe someday her music, her style and hopefully herself will evolve. Nice thing: glad she’s finally getting political and supporting worthy ppl and causes.

    • Hmmm says:

@JB, your comment is kind of condescending and comes off as unnecessarily mean spirited 😕 just because people enjoy Swift doesn’t mean they all are diehards, automatically like what she does, or don’t have valid opinions. I thought her reputation aesthetic and street style was not good. Not crazy about the street style here (she did best on that front back in 1989/Red eras), but genuinely loved the dress/look that went with it. Would have loved it on anyone.

      • Jb says:

True enough but often times it’s hard to differentiate between the fans who think she walks on water and a non fan who just happens to agree with them on a particular issue/picture/outfit etc. Many comments above gushing about this starburst of bad fashion choices had me believing super fans were on the prowl.

    • hmm says:

That’s a good point. I *think* but could be wrong, that those fans you speak of are mostly teenagers (and over-obsession/projection is a pretty normal rite of passage in teenage girlhood), and as far as I know they don’t frequent this site, you’re more likely to find them on insta, etc. None of the comments on here strike me as them. She has a lot of fans that can enjoy her without thinking she walks on water (I’m one of them, her music just makes me happy and want to dance, and that is too rare), and being a fan doesn’t automatically disqualify them from having valid opinions. The automatic shaming by a lot of people that comes with enjoying Swift is really a bummer. Maybe I’m blind, but I haven’t seen it come up for fans of most other artists like Ariana Grande, Beyonce, etc.

  16. Veronica S. says:

I hate the dress, but the shorts outfit is fine. Very…90s, haha.

  17. Skyblue says:

I had a pair of jeans in the exact shade of her jacket in 1988…created myself with the creative use of bleach and Rit dye. 😂. Really she should start wearing the little sleeveless sweater tank tops we all wore then. It would elevate the look. 😂

    • Christin says:

Sleeveless sweater tank tops! I just had a flashback to the late 1980s and a huge round rack of those at Brooks, in at least a dozen colors!

  18. rose says:

Nope I’m loving yet sweet girly look ,it’s so much more “Taylor “ then the rep era styling .

  19. Caty says:

I loved the pastel dress. Give me dreamy and billowy over ugly and avant garde or whatever any day of the week.

  20. juliebox says:

    Maybe she’s launching a line of sorbet…

  21. Liv says:

“All that I can forgive. But Taylor [Debbie] … Pastels?” -Morticia Addams, Addams Family

  22. Ali says:

I don’t mind that she’s into Easter egg colors but I am not a fan of those high waisted short shorts.

I’m in the I hope she’s releasing new music camp.

  23. Winnie Cooper’s Mom says:

I think her new style is fine. It’s sort of funny that’s it’s become like a faux-controversy lol. It’s not ground-breaking but it’s not offensive either. I don’t really get the narrative of “her fan base is aging out” or “she’s not as relevant as she used to be” or “she’s a has-been pop artist, Ariana is where it’s at now.” WTH? Taylor just had one of the most successful stadium tours ever – selling out the biggest arenas in the world. Whether you’re a fan or not, her popularity won’t be wavering anytime soon.

    • phaedra7 says:

Sick 🤢 of everything she does, anyway (esp. the TH debacle!) 🤮

      • hmm says:

I enjoy Swift, but I do wonder about that most successful stadium ever thing. Was it because she actually sold more seats than anyone else, or was it just that her tickets were more expensive than anyone else? Would be interesting to see if she still had the most successful tour if they just went by seat number instead of revenue.

  24. entine says:

I am not over analyzing and excruciatingly checking every detail of her current publicity, I just come across her pics in instagram now and then. So , no, I am not tired. I think she looked nice in that tiara and puffed sleeves long gown.

  25. JinnyBye says:

I’m definitely sick of it. She seems to be regressing. With Red she grew out of the twee/princessy thing. With 1989 she looked like a powerful, confident young woman. For Reputation she looked like a Hot Topic threw up on her and now she’s back to dressing like she did as a teenager.

It’s not the style of clothes, it’s the execution. She could go all in on an ethereal, light, summery look, but she stays safe and wears prom dresses and pastel tie-dye. It’s boring from an artist at her level. If you’re going to theme dress go all the way and give us something a little interesting.

  26. Kate says:

I’m really surprised so many people hated the Time100 dress. It’s not exactly fashion forward but it fits her well and I like the colors together. I can take or leave the bolero, but the dress is definitely less interesting without the drama it brings. I think the bolero sleeves look cool from the front but not that great from the back.

Re the street style looks, I like the casual springy vibe that she has going on although don’t necessarily think all the pieces go together all the time. And agree with other commenters that this aesthetic is much more in her comfort zone than a lot of the reputation styles, and it shows.

  27. Desolee says:

I like about half of it? I guess I like the glam parts but the casual outfits aren’t great. They look just ok on her and would look bad on most people.

  28. BANANIE says:

Love the shades, love the jacket. Altogether? Too much. I love me some Taylor and I don’t have a problem with this aesthetic ~in theory~ but I think each outfit has been overstyled. Shades plus jacket plus shirt plus yellow shirts – too much. Her other dress being yellow plus pink with an tiara plus bolero – too much.
People are saying this is more her natural esthetic but it doesn’t look natural to me. It looks like she’s trying really hard to look natural.

  29. Kathryn says:

It’s interesting to me she seems to have captured and retained her fan base which was built on heavy interaction, lots of shared photos, etc. but barely gives interviews now, is photographed only when she wants to be and hardly shares anything. I always wonder if super fan feel weird about that or don’t care? Comment I really want to know haha. She almost feels like she’s trying to become Beyonce to me and by that I ONLY mean in terms of a hyper-controlled image.

    • Kebbie says:

I’m not a fan, but they seem to still feel like she communicates with them. She posts a photo of a palm tree and they go into overdrive about what it could mean. She posts of photo of herself sitting on some stairs, and they decide she’s releasing her next album because of what step she’s seated on. They seem happy with the breadcrumbs she gives them.

With her last record she let a group of fans hear it early and then told them some of the gossip about the songs. They spread those comments far and wide on the Internet. She’s still communicating with them, but in a more removed way.

  30. JadedBrit says:

I, for one, am still convinced that this is something to do with her LGBTQIA+ advocacy/tomorrow being Lesbian Visibility Day (she’s been wearing/posting subtle colours of the rainbow, plus the Pink (Pink news etc). If so, jolly good for her, with the added bonus of sticking her fingers up at Trump and the Maga-loons.

  31. detritus says:

Imagine you had access to the money and fashion TayTay does…
    Sigh

I don’t mind the dress, but I wish it was solid pink and the only yellow was the flowers

  32. kim says:

just wished she’d rock curls again.

    • Alissa says:

She said in her list thing that she wrote for Elle that her hair doesn’t curl like that anymore. I can sympathize with her because I used to have VERY curly hair, and now it does a kinky/wavy thing and I straighten it instead because it doesn’t look good otherwise. A lot of people that didn’t know me when I was younger think that my hair is naturally straight!

  33. paranormalgirl says:

I like the dress, hate the bolero.

  34. Tiffany :) says:

Pastels work with her coloring, so I think this “phase” is fine for her.

Pastels are so girly, and sometimes I lean into that and sometimes I lean away from it. To each their own.
