The Marquess & Marchioness of Cholmondeley have nothing to hide, okay?

The Duke And Duchess Of Cambridge Attend Gala Dinner To Support East Anglia's Children's Hospices' Nook Appeal

Less than two months ago, The Sun published the “rural rivals” story about the Duchess of Cambridge’s attempt to “phase out” Rose Hanbury, the Marchioness of Cholmondeley. The two women used to be somewhat good friends, with their homes just a few miles from each other in Norfolk. Anmer Hall, the Cambridges’ country pile, is basically a very nice family home which sits on the Sandringham estate. Houghton Hall, the Cholmondeley estate, is supposed to be one of the grandest and most palatial homes in the area.

Anyway, as we now know, William overreacted to the “rural rivals” story and he ended up causing more gossip than ever, and people are pretty much convinced that William and Rose had an affair and when Kate found out, she tried to blank Rose from their social circle. Ever since I read that Royal Foibles blog post, I’ve become convinced that Rose was the one to originally leak the “rural rivals” story as payback for Kate trying to phase her out. The idea is that affairs happen quite often with this royal/aristocratic country set and no one ever phases anyone out. Kate broke the rule and so Rose made sure everyone knew about it. The affair story has been dutifully buried with significant help from William’s lawyers, and Kate was even given a special honor from the Queen which seemed like a “thank you for sticking by your sucky cheater husband” award.

Interestingly enough, now that the dust has settled a bit, Rose and her husband are back in the pages of Tatler, the official mouthpiece for the aristo set. Tatler did an article about how the Cholmondeleys are opening up Houghton Hall again this year, so that paying visitors can view their beautiful art collection:

North Norfolk boasts huge beaches, bigger skies, a swarm of royals – and Houghton Hall, the ravishing Palladian mansion built for Sir Robert Walpole, Britain’s first Prime Minister, in 1725. Its public rooms are stunning, an extraordinary testament to William Kent’s decorative genius. And the two majestic stone staircases that sweep up to the piano nobile at the back of the house are themselves a story: the originals, both at the front and the back of the house, were sold to settle gambling debts by Sir Robert’s grandson, the Earl of Orford, and have disappeared off the face of the earth. The splendour that is there now is courtesy of Sibyl, 6th Marchioness of Cholmondeley, who poured some of her Sassoon family money into reclaiming this glorious house from desuetude.

David Cholmondeley, the current Marquess, may yet restore the other set of glorious stairs to the front of his house. For the moment, though, he’s making do with the glorious, gleaming Henry Moore bronze, that’s sitting on the lawn just yards from the entrance: ‘Three Piece Sculpture: Vertebrae’, made in 1968-1969.

It’s just one of eight Moores in this year’s Houghton art extravaganza – the latest in a series that’s been entrancing the public since 2013, when the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg lent back to Norfolk 70 works originally displayed in Walpole’s Houghton that his spendthrift sold to Catherine The Great of Russia for 40,000 golden sovereigns. It was intensely romantic to see great pictures by Velasquez, Rembrandt, Rubens, Poussin and more back where they once belonged – and intensely gratifying for the Houghton box office. Normally, the Hall receives 16,000 visitors a year; in 2013, 165,000 drank their fill.

David Cholmondeley and his beautiful wife, Rose, have put on three further exhibitions, Richard Long in 2015, Damien Hirst last year, and the best of the bunch, the wonderful James Turrell in 2017. Turrell, who plays meditatively with light, has left Houghton his Skyscape; Seldom Seen – a wooden hut, resting quietly and semi-hidden among trees in a formal garden, part of its roof open to the sky. I sat there, alone, watching clouds, and was transported. Wonderful – but best of all, I was told, at sunrise and sunset. This month, Houghton is putting on six sunset viewings of the Turrell, plus dinners in the Old Kitchen of the Hall, from May 20-25, limited to 30 at a time. I’d grab the opportunity if you can.

[From Tatler]

It goes on from there, talking about all of the gorgeous art in the Cholmondeley collection and what is being displayed this year. I imagine this is a huge money-maker for the Cholmondeleys, allowing paying visitors to come in and view their collection, or loaned collections. It’s just a reminder of several things all at once: the Cholmondeleys are super-wealthy and well-connected, their house is bigger and grander than anything the Cambridges have currently, and the Cholmondeleys aren’t going anywhere. They’re not hiding. If anything, the affair gossip will probably add to the interest in Houghton Hall this year.

I wish Violet Crawley was real just to hear her comments about that whole kerfuffle.

    This is all so pretty.

  3. Becks1 says:

    Rose who??

    (that’s for BayTampaBay, lol!)

    • BayTampaBay says:

Thanks Becks! I know you will always be there for me and have my back.

I really do not think this story is dead or will be any time soon, especially if I have anything to do with it. I have a friend who lives in Norfolk and is in the hospitality business. She could care less about the story except that the number of day-trippers (her words) to Norfolk has increased about 30% over this time last year and she credits the increase to interest in the “Rose bush trimming story”. Per my friend, everyone interested in stately homes knew of Houghton Hall because it is one of the grandest still in private hands but few people were aware of Rose & David Cholmondeley per say. People who could care less about stately houses & art are paying $30-$55 USD per head to see “where Rose lives”. The Cholmondeley could not have planned this coincidence of events any better with respect to their bottom line. Rose and David must be laughing this a$$es off!

Getting to the “Rose & Cathy were friends” claim, I do not believe these two were good friends. I conjecture they were friends in the way that women in the USA that are members of the local Junior League are friends with all other members. I just do not seeing Rose & David having any interest in Bill & Cathy other than as it relates to the crown, David’s court duties and local charities. I have done a metric-tonne or research on Rose & David and I see no basis for a deep friendship as the couples are just too different. I think there was a hook-up that probably went on longer than it should have and Kate found out. However, I do not think Rose was super hot for Bill as her husband is much more interesting and all around attractive IHMO. If the rumors are true, I feel for Kate because she does not deserve any of this but I must admit I do admire how Rose handled the situation when Kate tried to punish her for Bill’s bad behavior.

      • Millenial says:

It is fascinating to think that the end result of this for the Cholmondeleys will be more visitors to their estate and more money in the pockets. I doubt it was planned that way, but it certainly turned out well for them.

      • geekychick says:

But to me, the fact that Rose (I don’t know anything about them, but I don’t want to learn their surnames:D ) did what she did after, makes her kinda……awful. Just awful.
Think about it: you are part of an affair. His wife finds out and is shocked, hurt and angry. She wants to work on her marriage and makes you know you’re not welcome in her/their inner circle. What do you do? Blast your affair all over the news, subtly blackmailing the wife to shut up and stop demanding (a pretty normal and obvious condition after an affair) and even profit from the fact. I mean, you can think about Kate whatever you want, but she was the injured, innocent party in that triangle. I don’t want to gloat over it. I’m kinda disgusted by the Marquis and wife. And William, of course, but we’re talking about the other family right now.

      • BayTampaBay says:

I know I make fun of the Cholmondeleys because it is so entertaining but from all I have been able to dig up on them ( I did a lot of digging even going through paywalls), they are VERY descent people, not snobby at all and very involved in the Norfolk Community. Per my friend who lives in Norfolk, The Cholmondeleys do a great many thing for the community that no one sees or hears about because they do not publicize it, do not want nor crave any public gratitude and just considered it part their aristocratic duty to the community at large.

      • Wigletwatcher says:

        BTB
in regards to your punishing rose for William’s bad behavior. This!
I get being angry at the woman, but the husband cheated. It’s just that type of processing that doesn’t make sense. The larger betrayal was from him. However, I guess from the dating years Kate became desensitized to it… which makes me think Kate might have felt a real threat in Rose. Which seems silly.

        Geeky
That’s assuming Kate believed wills was always faithful and the common affairs that are a known trait in those circles would never come close to her.
And when it did she only attacked someone in proximity to her. Someone avoidable. If Kate has the issues of affairs in those circles her issue will never be resolved by phasing out rose. She would have to move or not socialize in that circle. William also.

      • Tina says:

@geekychick: Why would you feel worse for Kate than David? Kate’s wanting to ostracise the other couple isn’t any better than David’s wish not to be ostracised from their social set. The Cholmondeleys were in Norfolk first, after all.

      • Nic919 says:

The entire premise of Kate punishing Rose for William’s cheating is just very off. William is the cheater in their relationship. Since no one is claiming that Rose forced William to cheat and assaulted him, all of the anger and blame should be on him. Kate has a right to be upset but it should be toward her husband who broke the vows. Many women do this and it just lets the cheating guy get away without any repercussions.

      • geekychick says:

But we don’t know that Kate didn’t “punish” her husband. We don’t have any idea what is, exactly, happening between two of them. Who’s to say that Kate blames the other woman?
If this happened to me, I imagine I wouldn’t want to see the other woman, no matter how I resolved it with my husband, who had the responsibility of keeping our marriage intact and who is the first to blame. But that doesn’t mean that I’d want to be besties with the woman he cheated with. Or see her. Ever.
IDK, be honest with yourself: if your partner cheated and you decided to stay with him, you’d be okay with continuing friendship with the woman he cheated with? I wouldn’t.

      • Nic919 says:

The story is more than just not wanting to be friends with Kate but looking to punish them and having them removed from the social circle. William is as much of a problem as the woman he is cheating with, so the way this story was framed is that William can continue to go on as he does, but Rose must be the one who has to be excluded from the entire circle.
It was never just a story that William can’t associate with Rose anymore, which is understandable, but that Rose cannot associate with anyone in that circle because of the affair with William, but meanwhile he still can.

      • BayTampaBay says:

@geekychick, I understand all you say but, IMHO cutting off a friendship and contact with the “other woman” is not the same thing as trying to get the “other woman” thrown out of the tennis club, de-membered and exiled from the country club, thrown off the local PTA Board of Directors or thrown out of the local Junior League.

      • geekychick says:

If Rose is the source to this story, how do we know that Kate wanted to “ostracize” the couple? It could all be just part of the narrative that Rose launched in papers. If she launched the story, how believable is the story? Especially bc everything in it makes her look well: she’s being ostracized and punished, her marriage is okay bc they were always “open” and so on.
I hate cheating, I hate the concept of affairs and I have zero tolerance for it-in my life. I think the wronged parties are the ones that we should emphatize with-Kate and David, true. I also don’t understand how, in this story, the main villain is Kate. To me, the main villains are Will and Rose. And if Rose dragged it all out in public just because she wanted to punish and one-upp hurt and cheated wife with young children, sorry and even profit from it-sorry, but that’s the lowest. Not because she is the one responsible for Kate and Will’s marriage (bc she’s not. That is all on Will), but her alleged behaviour afterwards is out of this world classist, mean and entitled.

      • Tilly says:

@BTB, I’ve heard the exact same things re the Cholmondeleys and their involvement in and around the Lynn area.
Very pleasant, not snobby at all despite the titles and wealth, all around nice people and for the most part, very well respected by the general public who don’t really have much time for the aristo crowd (barring the Queen and Chuck/Camillia)

      • Gia says:

Kate Middleton doesn’t have female friends. She was busy doing social climbing and didn’t need a prettier or more interesting friend to distract Willy’s attention.

Kate gets “punished” because she broke the social rules of her social set. You don’t break the social rules of your social set without getting punished. She has got middle class morals aka no cheating. But she moves in an aristo set where upper class morals are applied aka be discreet about your cheating.

      • PrincessK says:

Yes, most people had never heard of the Chumleys, now they are firmly on the map. I am waiting to see if new pictures of Rose will appear next week. Also, if anyone is willing to spill more beans.

    • notasugarhere says:

Interesting it comes in Tatler, with the new editor having a connection to Kate since uni.

Another working theory is William was cheating with someone/s else. Rose either played the role of host to the affair (a la the Van Cutsems at Anmer Hall for Charles and Camilla), or she let it slip in their circles if Kate was trying to elbow Rose out of the toffs.

    • Anance says:

      @BayTampaBay

This quote — “Per my friend who lives in Norfolk, The Cholmondeleys do a great many thing for the community that no one sees or hears about because they do not publicize it, do not want nor crave any public gratitude and just considered it part their aristocratic duty to the community at large.”

I can’t see these two double-dating with the Cambridges. But something’s going on – more than business as usual for Will & Kate. Yes, the honor bestowed on Kate is probably to reassure that she isn’t going anywhere.

Moreover, Will and Harry still don’t get along. Will does seem to be the center of much acrimony.

  4. Seraphina says:

This is pretty good theater if it’s true. And if true, I like how Kate thinks she can change the rules the aristocracy play by.

I do agree that there is a story here or Wills wouldn’t be so hard press to put water on that smoke before a fire gets out of control. I truly think Wills is spoiled and thinks he can do as he pleases because of all his position open to him. So yeah, I can see him cheating and all of it playing out just like stated above.

  5. Becks1 says:

Anyway, my real comment is that I follow Houghton Hall on IG, and I think that someone (presumably Rose) knows what they are doing, both with the house and with the IG account. It really sells the image of the wealthy British estate and the upperclass aristocrats etc. The whole thing is very Downton Abbey (from what I remember, I only watched a few episodes, lol.)

It’s also a reminder of what people mean when they say the really aristocratic women didn’t want William – Rose has the big house, she has the connections, she has the fancy dinner parties and the gorgeous gardens, she gets to attend state dinners – and she still gets to live her life in relative privacy.

    • Eliza says:

Was Rose of the aristocracy? I thought she’s a retired model.

      • Becks1 says:

her grandmother was a bridesmaid in the Queen’s wedding, so while I don’t think her family was titled, I think they’re still pretty firmly upper class.

      • Momoftwod says:

Her grandmother i believe was a lady in waiting for the Queen, or something like that

      • BayTampaBay says:

Her grandmother was the daughter of an Earl.

      • BayTampaBay says:

Her parents are highly connected both with The Turnip Toff aristo set and the London aristo set. Rose’s sister Marina married the Earl of Durham.

    • Clare says:

THIS. The ‘real’ British poshos didn’t want William OR Harry in the long term because who wants that sort of baggage and rules when you can just have the wealth, luxury and status without the scrutiny?

Incidentally, a couple of years ago I went to Houghton Hall for a weird tea thing with my mother in law, and I have to say its in far nicer nick than any of the public parts of the royal palaces that I’ve seen (anyone can buy a ticket to these btw).

      • BayTampaBay says:

We need to hold the First Annual Conference of CeleBitchy Commentariat at Houghton Hall!

ETA: I had no good place to stick this tidbit so I will stick it here: Prior to marrying Rose, David Rocksavage Cholmondeley dated Sabrina Guinness (1999, she is also an ex of the PoW), Lisa Barbuscia (1994-1997) and Isabelle Adjani (on and off over a period of 10 years).

      • NessaBee says:

@BayTampaBay holy cow those are some realllly interesting ex-girlfriends! he must have it going on in more than just the money, titles and good looks departments, which makes me think: rose also seems like kind of a live wire, based on moderate googling. if she managed to get david rocksavage’s marriage proposal. she must also be pretty smart or talented to impress someone with his resume, as she’s obviously a lovely girl but not CRAZY gorgeous or mind-blowing. (she and kate could be sisters.)

have we considered that maybe william didn’t have an affair with rose and that kate just doesn’t like to be compared to her so she told her friends to stop inviting her to toffy gatherings? if i’m honest, kate seems sweet but kind of dull. (handily the opposite of keen!)

not trying to knock kate. the idea of being stuck with william, the responsibility and restrictions of the crown AND having him cheat is just awful. i hope it’s something else – something less depressing. what would diana say!!?

    • L84Tea says:

I went and found the IG page after reading this. Wow, those gardens….While I certainly do NOT feel sorry for Kate at all, in my opinion Rose wins in the battle of the Turnip Toffs. She has the beautiful home, the beautiful parties, the beautiful gardens, the wealth, the adorable children, etc. and gets to live in private.

    • tempest prognosticator says:

Rose must have “wanted” William a little bit if she had an affair with him. Or was the affair more about putting Kate in her place? William just doesn’t strike me as being all that sexually irresistible. Rose sounds like a piece of work. And what’s up with her husband? Are we meant to believe that he’s ever so clever because he has profited from being publicly cuckholded? Gross.

      • BayTampaBay says:

I am guessing that IF, and I mean IF, Rose did have an affair with Bill Cambridge her husband David did not care because he probably..#1 had his own side gig and…#2 knew Bill Cambridge was no threat whatsoever to his marriage (or relationship with his wife which is not necessarily the same thing) and/or social standing.

      • PrincessK says:

There are all kinds of rumours about David Rocksavage, I would bet that Rose is fed up with him….20 year age gap.

    • KK2 says:

That IG account is interesting, as someone who knows nothing about the british aristocracy. I wonder if the Sussexes have similar plans for their instagram acct, in addition to their charitable promotions.

I have a hard time imagining someone would want to have an affair with William, aside from maybe a one off to say you banged the future king of england, if that does it for you. But he isn’t physically attractive to me and nothing about his personality seems attractive either. Harry is more attractive both physically (though still not really my type) and personality wise, but neither are really worth lusting after IMO.

      • Anance says:

The Turnip Toff mostly likely bed hop and enjoy Friends with Benefits as a matter of course. No one is going to divorce anyone. It is just the way are, their definition of what is included/excluded within the boundaries of a marriage is different than ours.

  6. Eliza says:

Will and Kate have an understanding, she told Chelsey not to worry about Harry’s cheating. I don’t see why we wouldnt consider them to have an open marriage. It’s the Windsor way. I mean even Anne got with Camilla’s brother while married. These circles aren’t normal. I doubt she phased Rose out, Rose wasnt leaving her husband and neither was Will leaving Kate. I do think they were hiding it all from the press, because it’s not good PR. But the Queen’s never complain never explain would have let this rumor pass so much quicker.

    • lana86 says:

It’s not an “open marriage “ if only one of them is sleeping around 🤔

      • Eliza says:

Who says she’s not? Put her next to a cute guy and she’s batting her eyes and flicking her hair.

      • lana86 says:

@Elisa, lol, Will would not tolerate that for sure.
Her whole image is traditional conservative perfect wife, are you kidding? And she seems into it. She’s not aristo or bohema or whatever.

And clearly she herself is not chill about his cheating, see above – freezing out Rose.

      • Deedee says:

Watch her light up around Ben Ainslie. I’m sure the girl has some fun with a personal trainer or two. I mean, look at William and his stodginess. No fun in that.

      • BayTampaBay says:

I hope she is having some fun!

    • Megan says:

Kate did not tell Chelsea to ignore Harry’s cheating. She told her to ignore rumors that he was cheating because they come with the territory. It is amazing how that quote has been twisted to fit a certain narrative.

      • Vanessa says:

The line about Kate saying to Harry ex that cheating is just part of the life for the royals have been used a lot by Kate stans as way to say that Harry is also cheater too . And don’t be surprised if Harry cheats on Meghan too see their relationship isn’t perfect either I never brought that Kate said anything like that at all .

  7. Alissa says:

I mean, they might have a lot of art and a huge gorgeous house, but ultimately will will be king and Kate will be queen so 🤷

    • Casey20 says:

So her husband cheats on her with woman she entertains with…..being Queen Consort isn’t worth your dignity! William is an A- hole!

      • Alissa says:

LOL my point wasn’t that it’s okay for Will to cheat on her. I don’t care for Will.

I just think the play they’re making here is pretty damn funny.

    • BayTampaBay says:

I rather be Rose Hanbury married to David Cholmondeley than Queen Consort. Bill Cambridge is a big fat A**hole.

      • Pineapple says:

“Bill Cambridge is a big fat A**hole.” @BayTampaBay … I am laughing out loud and smiling as I type this. Oh, how horrible. I think this is true!!!!

If there is even a monarchy by then at all. Besides: wealth, luxury, and privacy vs. the public “you owe us your life because we pay for you”, sucking up to horrible world leaders, unveiling pointless plaques, nodding and smiling in endless boring conversations? The Chumwahwahs have it made! Team Chumwhatsits!

      • BayTampaBay says:

Ianne, I cannot imagine having to receive a horrible world leader like Donald J. Chump let alone having to suck-up and play nice to the orange one.

      • Ali says:

The “you owe us your life because we pay for you” thing is so gross.

I loved Downton Abbey and these giant old estates and gardens.

        “Chumwahwahs”

        LOVE IT! Thanks Ianne.

ETA: It is pronounced “Chumley”. Just like the lovable dude on Pawn Stars

      • FluffyPrincess says:

Forevermore they will be known as the “Chumwahwahs” –!! I love it!!

Honestly, I don’t know how they get Chumley for pronunciation! There is a “d” in there!

    • Bunny says:

Per Instagram, Rose works with prominent artists the world over. Rose is in Vogue. Rose is hosting exquisite parties. Rose is dressed perfectly, in clothes she chooses, without regard for what the tabloids might say. Rose writes with knowledge and intelligence about history, art, culture, architecture, fashion, and so on. Rose renovates her home, and as the money comes from private sources, no one bats an eye. Rose has opinions, and seems to express them without reservation.

Rose may never be Queen, but her life is far more interesting to me than Catherine’s will ever be.

Rose doesn’t have to pretend that she’s ordinary. She doesn’t have to strive to be relatable. She doesn’t have to watch her every word, expression, and step.

Good for Rose. She’s a force to be reckoned with.

      • BayTampaBay says:

Same goes for her husband. He is also very accomplished in the art & film worlds.

      • Tilly says:

Rose is also, by all accounts, a very nice, chilled out person.
I have family in the Kings Lynn area, and they get their wood from the same lumber stores that serve Sandringham and all the surrounding big houses/estates.
The guy who delivered their wood (insert joke here) said Rose is probably the kindest out of the Norfolk set, brought some tea and biscuits out for him and had a nice chat.

Screw Tatler, if you want the real gossip, talk to the tradies who work in the area!

      • My3cents says:

BUNNY, True. But can she flash world leaders and reporters at the most inappropriate moments? I think not.

      • Casey20 says:

Rose is an A-hole just like William!

      • MA says:

@Bunny I kind of stan her for the reasons you mentioned (style, culture, art, estate management) …except for the William affair thing (shudder). She’s friends with some prominent fashion people I like too.

      • PrincessK says:

William is on record, praising Rose’s attributes to the skies.

    • Simon the Bird says:

…who would want that when you could have all the wealth and privilege with none of the work or scrutiny? What’s the upside to being queen? Absolutely nothing.

      • BayTampaBay says:

The keys to the jewelry cabinets???

      • lanne says:

The aristos have some pretty swank jewelry as well, a lot of it w/royal provenance (it comes up in auctions from time to time when the aristos are hard up.) So the Royals can keep the Crown Jewels.

      • Casey20 says:

Poor Kate….Husband cheating on her with a friend…but she has keys to the jewelry vau!t! I bet Kate would give up the jewelry to have her husband’s undying love!…even if husband is an A-hole like William

      • CoffeAddict says:

        Ask Meghan?

    • Mrs.Krabapple says:

“ultimately will will be king and Kate will be queen” — actually, the aristocracy look down on the royal family. Many felt that Diana, who was more blue-blooded than the Teutonic Charles, was too good for them. That’s why a Middleton could snag William, but not a member of the aristocracy.

    • MA says:

I really don’t get this. So they have a lifetime of being scrutinized, carrying out public duties that clearly bore them, feigning interest in us peasants. They have no significant political power. What’s the upside on being the monarch and consort? Aristos also have jewels, lands, wealth. I guess fame, attention, and being curtsied to. Maybe it’s fun to be revered and called the King and Queen but can’t see how it’s worth it.

  8. Eliza says:

I remember reading long ago these stately homes open to public seasonally to help cover the cost of the buildings. They’re terrible expensive to upkeep and most of the aristocracy isn’t as wealthy as they seem (inheritance tax is crazy high). So it helps keep the house and lifestyle without having them get real jobs. Not saying these guys are in that group but I always found that fascinating.

    • Mego says:

Yeah if they are having to open their home up for public tours they aren’t that well off. They aren’t able to manage the cost of upkerp on their own I imagine.

    • Kylie says:

Which is also why these families are willing to contract with shows like Downton Abbey to use their homes filming. The money they get from those deals makes it worth it.

      • Bettyrose says:

Speaking for the public though, getting a peek inside the homes is so much fun.
Spent a week in the Cottswalds once doing nothing else.

    • BayTampaBay says:

Can you imagine the annual insurance bill on all that art at Houghton Hall. LOL! LOL!

The Cholmondeleys are not the Gates or Jobs or Bloombergs or Bezoses but David’s paternal grandmother was Sybil Sassoon and his paternal great-grandmother was Aline Rothschild.

    • BorderMollie says:

That may be partially true, but let’s not kid ourselves-these upper class folks have all kinds of investments, probably in sketchy mining and arms companies and the like, to keep up their lifestyles. They’re just good at washing their money through the layers of banks and government before lording it.

      • Loobieloo says:

Those old families with stately homes to run are more likely to be asset rich but cash poor, which is why they have to open them to the public , of hand them over to the National Trust.

      • BayTampaBay says:

It is my understanding that they also get tax breaks if they open their stately home(s) for a minium number of days to the paying public.

The Cholmondeleys also own Cholmondeley Castle in Cheshire which is every bit as opulent as Houghton Hall but in a different way from a different time period.

Running some of those estates is a real job! I would not want the responsibility of keeping it going for the next generation. Have you any idea how much it costs in staff, maintenance., restoration.

    • lucy2 says:

Yes, the upkeep costs are astronomical on places like that, so many of them do have paid visitors, rent out for events, etc. I love visiting places like that! The gardens at Houghton look beautiful.

I was at Sandringham House yesterday. Great to see some of the rooms as well as the beautiful grounds.

The Cambridges have just been put on notice the Turnip Toffs run this and not going away. Kate and the Middletons are a divorce away from losing their social standing so if William’s scepter wanders again in the Turnip fields they’ll have to suck it up and take it.

    • The Dot says:

The Cambridges have been put on notice by what, exactly? The Cholmondeleys have opened their house before for this sort of thing, so I don’t get how it’s any kind of statement. It feels like a major reach.

    • notasugarhere says:

The Middletons know their role is to provide cover in exchange for status.

      • Seraphina says:

NAS, can you elaborate on providing cover. I’m curious. Thank you.

      • lanne says:

I think she means they have to provide cover for Wandering Willy. Heck, Carole would let Willy wander in her own damn bedroom so long as it meant keeping her status. I’m actually not making fun of her. I think that’s just part of the grim Faustian bargain she has struck. The rule is Not “Thou Shalt Not Sin” but “Thou Shalt Not Be Found Out Thus I Am Not Shamed”

  10. Uppenyrcraut says:

Rose is rather homely, though I gather in those circles, you can be plain as long as you are whippet thin.

    • Eliza says:

She was quite pretty when she modeled. I don’t know if she was having an “off” day for this gala or she got a bit more plain as she aged. I’m going for off day and bad angles of her face in pictures.

      • BayTampaBay says:

IMHO, her look is very 1960s bohemian. In pictuers I have seen of her where she has “dressed” hair and wearing a tonne of “slap” on her face she is gorgeous. However, going back to pictures of Camilla in the 1970s and 1980s, it seems to me that the Turnip Toff women put on a $5000.00 maxi evening dress, run a brush through their hair, slap on some expensive moisture and go. I think Kate is the exception to the rule with perfect “dressed” hair and professional make-up job every time she leaves the house. Camilla wore hardly any make-up and no “dressed” hair until she married the PoW. Look at the Bystander pictures on the Tatler website and you will see what I mean.

      • olive says:

she’s beautiful face-on, she has very pretty big eyes but she has a weak chin so profile shots like that are really not flattering.

    • Jb says:

And money! Money and being thin helps a ton to up your attractiveness 🙂

  11. JaneDoesWork says:

I don’t blame Kate at all, but I’m also not surprised that these unwritten rules exist. I can already hear Carole explaining that to Kate and getting frustrated with her inability to play along. That said, its hard to feel bad for Kate… she knew what she was getting and she married him anyway.

    • Surly Gale says:

I’m not so sure she did know. How could one? Wm was given PLENTY of time to sow his ‘wild oats’ so she may very well have said yes, I’ll wait, get it out of your system…cause it’s a BIG no once we’re married ….. especially if this DID go down whilst she was pregnant. I am beginning to feel sorry for Kate because she does seem like she’s in an unhappy marriage. Like she walks on eggshells whenever he’s around. He seems to thrive on having ‘power’ over her, hence her ‘blossoming’ around children….she probably feels completely relieved and even if her pic is being taken, she’s more relaxed away from Willy’s willy.

  12. geekychick says:

All of it just leaves a sour taste in my mouth…for Kate.
I never particularly liked her, but if all of this is true….then poor Kate. Then it would seem that William is truly damaged, if he didn’t take note how “expected” affairs ruined any semblance of normal coexistence between his own parents.
The “aristo” set and “aristo” rules where Kate is spurned (at least in “aristo” world for not wanting to submit to, let’s be honest, a totally chauvinistic and outdated system of values (and you’re sure it has nothing to do with standard British classism???). And I don’t believe woman is supposed to just sit back and “take it”, just bc she should have known “how things are done in this world”. That world is outdated privilege and snobbery.
And that other woman, if it’s true that she launched the story, is truly trash.

  13. TheOriginalMia says:

Houghton House isn’t going to shut down a lucrative tour because of William’s wandering scepter. They are going to capitalize on it because this type of behavior is common among their set.

I still don’t buy Rose and William. I do think she knows who the mistress she is and what they were up to/facilitated the affair.

    • BayTampaBay says:

I could believe both stories, that Rose facilitated the affair or was the affair. The longer this story hangs around the more I believe she was the facilitator because William just does not seem to me to be her type. I cannot fathom her interest in William.

ETA: I also believe the Cholmondeleys have a VERY non-traditional marriage in the USA sense/definition of traditional marriage.

  14. Erinn says:

“If anything, the affair gossip will probably add to the interest in Houghton Hall this year.”

I find that quite interesting, honestly. It’s going to drum up a lot of interest from people who wouldn’t normally take interest in their art/lifestyle. I actually kind of question the source of some of the stories now – it makes it seem like perhaps Marquess/Marchioness felt like putting someone in their place and also benefiting from it? Otherwise, it came out and they jumped on the interest to promote the gallery, either way – it’s interesting.

    • Div says:

I believe there were rumors that Rose & David had an “interesting” lifestyle—e.g., if Rose cheated David wouldn’t have cared because they were/are swingers, were open, etc. I don’t think Rose & David put it out there, but I do believe it sounds like they decided to capitalize off it.

My tin foil hat theory is that the gossip was floating around for a long time—Sophie Money-Coutts, among others, implied it on twitter and then quickly deleted the tweets. It leaked when Kate & Will tried to ostracize slash force out Rose & David from their usual social circle. Rose & David, in turn, basically decided to go full f*ck them once they realized the gossip was out there by letting it flourish/capitalize on it instead of trying to shut it down. My guess is they were furious that the Cambridges tried to force them out of Norfolk society since the Cholmondeleys have been part of the Turnip Toffs longer than Wills and Kate. I suspect the Turnip Toffs also backed the Cholmondeleys, since they’ve been part of set longer, and thought that the Cambridges were the ones who needed to suck it up/avoid events with the Cholmondeleys or pretend nothing ever happened.

I feel bad for Kate, but I also have some sympathy for Rose & David IF my tin foil theory is true (it does match a bit with the rumors). Why should they be socially exiled because Will couldn’t keep his dick in his pants? And Wills made a huge mistake swinging around his lawyer with the threats of lawsuits, etc. because the story was so vague it would have gone away—but the palace overreaction emboldened journalists to come out about it on twitter. And it certainly looked terrible because it illustrated the firm was capable of shutting up the tabloids—same as they have with the rumors of Andrew’s many exploits—but have done little to quell the hatred against Meghan.

      • BayTampaBay says:

@Div, “Cambridges were the ones who needed to suck it up/avoid events with the Cholmondeleys or pretend nothing ever happened.”

What you stated is exactly what the Cambridges should have done as due to their position they can hang with any “set” they want to even if they do not fit in with a particular set. Maybe they were desperate as the London aristo set really did not want them.

I thoroughly believe an old adage my grandmother repeated to me often fits in perfectly here: If you seek revenge you need to dig two graves!

      • MsIam says:

@Div, I agree with your assessment too, it seems spot on as any I’ve read, given that we don’t really know what happened. As far as the Tatler piece, for some reason in my mind’s eye I see Rose reading it and shouting “Take that b!tches! ” followed by an evil laugh! Lol!

  15. Texas says:

    Ugh. I hate cheaters.

  16. SJR says:

Rich peoples problems. Blah, blah, blah.

  17. Beech says:

I understood David Rocksavage is gay, needed an heir, he and Rose like each other well enough and he recognized she would make a great partner in running his pile. Reportedly she has a superb eye for antiques, rummaged around in said pile’s attic and discovered exquisite hand painted antique Chinese wallpaper panels. They were debuted in a candlelit dinner for 100, I think, earlier this year. And are being reproduced?

Who knows what William is like? Maybe he’s fun? He had a window of time when he was cute but cute didn’t compare to the stunning beauty of Andrew and Edward in their younger days. It was all so fleeting. Cary Grant always kept his looks.

The DM article was so ham fisted, what was he thinking? Stupid is as stupid does.

    • BayTampaBay says:

It is my understanding that Mr. Rocksavage may play for both teams but from all I have read (paid tolls to get through paywalls to research) he is definitely not gay in the strictest USA definition of the word. If someone has a link to these fairy-tale stories, would you please post it.

The part about needing an heir is correct. Rose had twin boys (the heir & spare at the same time) then four years later gave birth to a daughter.

    • PrincessK says:

That is the gossip I heard too.

  18. lanne says:

The Cambridges need to figure out a way to brand themselves for the future. They’re out-worked by Charles/Camilla, out-glammed by the Sussexes, and side-eyed by the Turnips. They aren’t even King/Queen Turnip–the Chumbawambas are (too many damn unpronounced letters in their name!).

Sadly, I think Turnip Toff is an apt name for the Cambridges. They’ve shown themselves to be a lot like turnips. And not a lot like much else.

Maybe they just need to lean into their what we call in the US the Minivan Majority fan base (the People Magazine reading, Jennifer Garner worshipping crowd–I don’t know what the British equivalent of that could be). Is “dull and dutiful” such a bad thing? If they pull a Prince Edward and go around unveiling plaques, and pull a Princess Anne and go to every horse event and butter festival and hospital opening, they can carve out a good space for themselves.

And Kate will likely have to suck up to the Turnips to get back into their good graces. She doesn’t really occupy an enviable position. Nobody should have to “just accept” being cheated on. For her sake, I hope that all this drama will shame Wandering Willy into going back home and staying there. Royals can’t simply do whatever they want and expect to get away with it in the age of social media. (Think what a field day the media would have with King Edward and all of his exploits both as King and POW. He even had a special chair made so he could have 2 women at the same time without crushing them with his considerable girth!)

    • BayTampaBay says:

For a moment, forget the future King & Consort part. I have always wondered which one of them most enjoyed hanging with Turnip Toff set, Bill or Cathy?

I know this does not make much sense but I have always seen Kate as a London girl but have read many places that she really prefers Anmer Hall, Norfolk.

  19. Jaded says:

The Norfolk Nobs (aka Turnip toffs) are a very insular group. They seem to have unwritten rules about behaviour, i.e. what happens in Norfolk stays in Norfolk. Along come William and Kate – William an arrogant, petulant “princeling” and Kate his parvenu Turnip Toff wannabe. If William was caught with his pants down either with Rose or someone else firmly entrenched in Norfolk ways and Kate tried to banish the Chumleys from their social circle, it was a grave tactical error that has come back to bite them in their royal butts. Nobody reveals what goes on in those social circles, certainly not to the point where William felt the need to stomp off to the press and file a human rights complaint. Talk about killing an ant with a howitzer…I doubt they’re welcome in Norfolk high society these days.

Just checked out this site. Okay, Rose and David win hands down! Their house and gardens are absolutely PHENOMENAL. This compares to any palace that the BRF own. Wow wow wow! Plus, they have a castle too!

        You go Chumwahwahs!

    • BayTampaBay says:

The Cholmondeleys have phenomenal taste in spades.

    • MA says:

their estate is also on instagram

  21. phlyfiremama says:

I’m just here for that embroidered dress Rose is wearing. What an exquisitely beautiful garment!!!

    • Some chick says:

It’s Valentino. The sleeves and bodice are amazing. IMHO it sort of falls apart below the waist, but the top half is absolutely exquisite. Kate’s Jenny Packham is also very flattering.

  22. Beech says:

*howling* I entered a lengthy response, dropped my phone, and it disappeared! I believe the article and pictures were in Tatler. I saw the link in DataLounge, a gay website. Someone will post a topic and a thread commences. The wallpaper, wordsfailme is that beautiful. There was another link to a years’ old NYT interview of Rocksavage and the DL response was “Can he be any gayer?” I know he squired beautiful actresses like Adjani but purportedly leans to men.

Meanwhile, I have another load of wash to start. Carry on. Dreaming of intimate candlelit soirees for 100 to unveil antique handpainted Chinese wallpaper. And the furniture, oh god , the furniture.

    • BayTampaBay says:

Beech, next time please post the link for the benefit of lazy gossip mongers such as myself! LOL!

  23. Becks1 says:

This is in response to the general comments about how Rose is a crap person for leaking this information –

I don’t think she meant to, to be honest. I think she leaked the rural rival story as a warning shot, so to speak. If we play along with this theory, and we assume that Kate was actively working to “phase out” Rose, and to exclude her from prominent social events (I’m assuming it wasn’t that Kate didn’t invite her to a playdate), I can see Rose being pissed and dropping this gossip nugget as a warning to Kate that “I can leak things, and I have things you don’t want leaked, so back off.” or maybe just a ploy to get Kate to look petty.

The word “affair” started getting tossed around with frequency AFTER William went to Richard Kay. I don’t think Rose anticipated that William would try to stamp out a spark with Niagara Falls. But if anything, I can see that backfiring more in terms of their role in the Turnip Toffs, because now Rose is probably like “omg, first your wife is bitchy to me and then you run to Richard Kay threatening legal action? WTF is wrong with you people? that’s not how its done!!!”

Whoever had the affair is in the wrong (so William and Rose, or another woman), but let’s remember that according to the Royal Foibles theory(which btw I love that we all just accept as the truth, lol), the news of the affair itself was not leaked by Rose.

    • Moose says:

Its been mentioned elsewhere that the affair was an open secret in Norfolk for some time, so it could have been anybody that accidently or otherwise leaked it to potentially put Kate back in her place and embarrass her….

And that picture at the top always makes me smile…. Kate looking smug and Wills looking rueful…

      • PrincessK says:

In that picture both William and Rose look very guilty IMO. Kate should only be really worried if it is not just a roll in the hay, but real affection or love between these two. Time will tell.

  24. Moose says:

And its so nice to see that H&M IG account is now at 8m after less than 2 months, closing in rapidly on W&K…

  25. Carol says:

This makes me wonder if harry would cheat too then, if that’s how things are for the ultra rich set.

And if we accept that rose leaked the story then maybe David knew about the whole thing and didn’t care due to him having his own affairs too lol

    • M says:

I think he will but not quite yet. He has had a wandering eye in the past, and he was not known for treating his exes with grace.

For now, they are crazy in love and adore each other. But as with every one else, that will settle down, and they will face hardship as well. Harry is no different than all the other royals. His father cheated, his grandfather, his uncle, his brother (?) and almost every male ancestor on his father’s side. I cannot see why he should be different.

      • carol says:

Lol well there’s one reason to be happy I am not part of the ultra rich aristocracy I guess!

      • M says:

Yes, Carol. Fame, money and titles are one thing. But the morality that is grown into high society is brutal.

    • Becks1 says:

@carol – yeah, that’s part of the theory. David knew, others knew – it was an open secret like someone said above. So that’s why rose was willing to risk it coming out (like I said I don’t think she leaked the affair but she may have talked to someone who did etc) because it doesn’t affect her really. She has nothing to lose. William does.

And I think Harry May cheat. I’m hoping that bc he waited to get married, dated around some, etc that he won’t, but who knows. I think we will find out if he does bc I think Meghan would leave him.

      • M says:

I don´t think Meghan will leave him for the same reason Kate won´t … She adores the social position, the fame, the respect and the superiority that follows with the title as a royal, and because if Harry would remarry, she would lose her title. Even though I think that she would be absolutely fine without him both in terms of money and fame, she would lose that extra sparkle which comes when one is a royal. Therefore, I think she would put up with the cheating to keep that just as every other royal woman has in the past – beside Diana and Fergie. The other option just isn´t as attractive. She could even have her own fling like Diana, which I think is absolutely fine if your partner is a cheater. Just do the same if you want to stay in an uphappy marriage.

      • PrincessK says:

I don’t think that Harry will cheat on Meghan, I think that their love affair has only just started and Harry is just descending into a deep deep ocean of love and discovery with Meghan that will more than fill a lifetime. I also see Meghan as fiercely protective of Harry, I don’t think he has ever experienced anything before than what he is getting from Meghan now, lucky man!

      • BayTampaBay says:

        Did Andrew cheat on Fergie?

      • M says:

BayTampaBay – I miscommunicated that one about Fergie, sorry. As far as I know, she was the one who had an affair, and she has stated since that she never wanted to leave the firm, hence her position was way stronger as a HRH than after even though she was pretty famous. The respect and superiority normally diminishes as they become ´normal´celebrities, and I don´t think either Kate or Meghan will want to leave that. Diana was an exception, but neither Kate or Meghan will reach her level of popularity.

But otherwise – the list of HRH´s with extra marital affairs is very long. Royalty and the British aristocracy just have marriage constellations that are extremely odd.

  26. Beech says:

Former blue collar worker here, people cheat. Homely, handsome, pretty or wealthy or poor.

  27. oddly says:

If Rose leaked this it also has it’s minus side which will affects her daughter with gossip that will now never go away , in much the same way the Harry/ James Hewitt rumours will never die, no matter what the truth is.

The latest round of gossip is speculating if Rose’s daughter Iris , born in March 2016, might not be Williams and perhaps the reason that Kate is so over the Chums if she suspects Iris is indeed Williams child. It really makes more sense than just an affair because she has seen that many times with William. An affair is one thing, giving birth to his child when there was an easy option, is something entirely different.

Having fallen down the rabbit hole of the Chumley family who should I find but Tiggy Legge Burke and Royal mistress, Alice Keppel (Camilla’s great grandmother)………this lot are so incestuous I wouldn’t put anything past them

  28. sp says:

The obvious question is whether Rose and/or hubby leaked this because they are cash-strapped. The perfect revenue generator.

  29. Casey20 says:

2017 Spanish State Dinner. Harry escorts Rose to the State Dinner. Does anyone else find that odd??? Photos of Kate, seething??? Angry??? Bored??? IDK, but she’s not happy.

    • oddly says:

She was also at the Chinese state dinner in 2016, about 6months pregnant, sitting next to George Osborne (ex treasurer) . I think as her husband is Lord Great Chamberlain of GB she is expected to be there, on both occasions she seemed bored out of her mind. The Spanish state dinner was Harry’s first so maybe they sat him next to someone of similar age and background to show him the ropes. These seem to be the only two dinners with pictures of her online but she may well have been to other state dinners prior to that.

It will be interesting to see who becomes LGCofGB, when Charles is King , even though it is an hereditary position it is oddly inherited by many extended members of the family, there are at least fifteen people alive who literally have shares in the position. David Chumley has a 50% share with various others having as little as a 1% share (all calculated on family births going back 250 years). Charles will pretty much have the last word on who gets the position out of the family queue up.

Even if Charles stays with the status quo will William, now that this fiasco is public OR (cue daytime soap voice over)

Did Rose have an affair/child with William to ensure both David and her son’s future position as LGC of GB. Blackmail?

      Now I’m just getting silly…..but am I?

      • oddly says:

        …………and there’s more.

More research , many people even Debrets seem to be unclear on this but some say the position rotates through the family and each sub branch of the family appoints their representative for the next monarch, if this is true then Lord Carrington (of the Lincolnshire line) is expected to be the next LGC. if he declines than one of those on the rotisserie list is none other than Rufus Keppel, Earl of Albemare, Camilla’s cousin. But some pundits disagree on this.

        * ” After endless debates, The House of Lords determined in 1902, the office was jointly vested in the families of Marquessate of Cholmondeley, the Earldom of Ancaster and the Marquessate of Lincolnshire. The office is held by the Cholmondeleys in alternate reigns”.

So the Chumleys will not be LGC in Charles reign but they will be back in the role for Williams reign.

The more you read the more ridiculous the monarchial clap trap and all it’s hangers on become. Stream line the whole outfit Charles, not just the family.

      • Tina says:

Eh, the LGC role is unpaid. If people care about this stuff and it doesn’t cost us anything, I’m relaxed about it.

    • BayTampaBay says:

    • BayTampaBay says:

When you go to a Royal State Dinner in the UK you are escorted in based on protocol. The highest ranking man escorts the highest ranking woman…ie….the King of Spain or POTUS escorts QEII into dinner……the Queen of Spain or the FLOTUS is escorted by the next highest ranking man present at the dinner (Charles or Philip or William???). One is very rarely escorted into dinner by one’s spouse. Spouses ARE NOT seated next to each other at a state dinner.

FYI: IIRC, with regards to Royal protocol, the Prime Minister is considered the 4th most important commoner in the UK: Arch Bishop of Canterbury, Arch Bishop of York, Someone I cannot remember, Prime Minster.

      • Tina says:

@Bay, the people you have listed are officers of state rather than commoners (the Archbishops of Canterbury and York are entitled to sit in the House of Lords). Officers of state rank higher in the order of precedence than everyone except royals (so, higher than peers such as dukes, earls etc).

      • BayTampaBay says:

@Tina, thanks for the update and correction. Did not mean to use the term “commoner” but I could not remember the correct term.

I knew that the the two Arch Bishops sat in the House of Lords but I thought it was due to the position/office they held not hereditary right. It’s great to learn something new every day which is why I love this blog; highly competent and helpful commentariat.

The “someone I cannot remember” is the Lord Chancellor.

I read all this in a book years ago so I might not have it correct but it gives us something to discuss in our daily British history lesson. LOL!

      • Tina says:

@Bay, no problem. Most of the people who sit in the House of Lords actually don’t have hereditary titles, most are life peers (and some are bishops, called Lords Spiritual). Tony Blair reformed the House of Lords in 1999 such that only 92 of the 782 Lords are hereditary peers. (Hereditary peers and life peers are called Lords Temporal).

  32. Jess says:

Rare opinion: there was no affair. William was a PR idiot, some guy wrote “Everyone knows about the affair” on twitter to make himself seem more in the know or just for giggles, and here we are: blinded to what’s in front of us. From instagram it really seems as if Rose and David lead a normal life, wearing hard hats to volunteer at a local hospital, sifting through decades old linens found in their huge old house, just generally being down to earth people with 3 young children. The press version of these people that I am reading about is horrifying, turning them into something that they probably are not. They seem committed to being good stewards of this ancestral estate, not calculating, no cheating, low drama. Some of the comments here are just baffling and completely unaligned with (what is probably) reality. I don’t them but again just look at their Instagram like wtf. There was no affair. This got blown so so out of the water!

    • Leena says:

The most intelligent comment I have read on here on the subject.

There seem to be a lot of folk about who think it is perfectly right and proper to believe anything nasty about someone they don’t like, but woe betide anyone who similarly denigrates anyone they do like.

This particular subject is even worse given there are children of both families and no proof whatsoever of anything.

But it wasn’t just William’s statement and it was also the rumblings by a couple media people and non-royal watchers. Your timeline is off. William’s PR blunder came BEFORE the affair rumors came out.

      Timeline was:
      1. Benign article about Turnip Toff feud (no mention of affair)
      2. William’s blunder: Weirdly over the top PR article by Kay saying that THERE IS NO FEUD, NOTHING TO SEE HERE, W&K ARE PERFECT FUTURE KING AND QUEEN.
      3. THEN the rumblings but at least 3 media people, non royal watchers about affair gossip.
      4. THEN the eerie silence from the UK press who will devote articles to any hint of a Meghan rumor, will report on her knees, avocados, whole articles about speculation, fan tweets, hater tweets,, fake pregnancy conspiracies. They could’ve legally written an article about “There are unverified rumors that William is having an affair” or “Social Media Thinks Prince William Had an Affair.” And it would not be beneath the gutter press to do so, as they’ve done for other stories and royals.
      5. And what sealed it for me–verification from a former IPSO solicitor and a BBC journalist that there is a media blackout on the affair.

Also, we don’t know about any of these people in the end, but the idea that you can get an idea of how anyone is from how they choose to curate their Instagram is really something.

It’s not the Instagram presentation though what one chooses to present on social media can also be telling. It is also what Rose and David can be seen doing with their time for the past however many years, both on Insta and, with frivolous, time-wasting online digging: a picture wearing hard hats in a small press article (noticeably not on the Instagram, no virtue signaling but not hiding if the local press want to write about it) to raise money for construction at their community’s local hospital, appreciating a dinner outside, appreciating: nature, old sheets, wrangling steer, raising chickens and children. Minimal “selfies”. The insta even mostly seems to function as promotion for events like a literary festival at Houghton. These are the actions and interest of down to earth people. Down to earth is one descriptor but perhaps not the precise one to convey that basically: media portrayal and gossip coverage does not seem to align. So many are painting them as these well-off (which isn’t a sin), calculating people.

I’m not sure if they’re calculating, but down to earth and private people can be calculating as well. George W. Bush was always portrayed as this humble cowboy who just preferred to work on his ranch when he grew up in one of the premier old money, blue blood American families. He always seemed like a down to earth, normal neighborly guy based on his PR image but his campaign employed devious people and was downright dirty. And if you go by what the royal family put out there, especially the Cambs, they’re dutiful, middle class and “just like us!”

Also, these people don’t work traditional 9-5 jobs, there’s plenty of leisure time. Anyhow I don’t know if they’r calculating or not but I don’t think we can really tell. I do think they live quite a nice looking life and their work with their estate is pretty amazing.

Of course there was an affair. The Cambridges P.R. people have made at to the states I see. But alas, too little too late!

  35. ChattyCath says:

If the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were to divorce Meghan would keep her title provided she didn’t remarry. Even if Harry remarried. When a Duke dies and his son succeeds to the title the widow becomes the ‘Dowager Duchess’ and the son’s wife if he has one becomes the Duchess of Blankshire. Having a title is still a source of societal respect in the U.K.

  36. ChattyCath says:

Maybe there’s no Affair. My Grandmother who was a Court Dressmaker always said ‘You can tell a gentleman by the way he treats the ordinary people’ ie with courtesy and egalitarianism. I suspect Cathy has become ‘grand’ and a laughing stock and possibly her origins were the subject of derision by the Turnip Toffs. This would be far more wounding than an affair especially if she heard Rose and people she thought were friends laughing at her. Remember Carole saying ‘toilet’? What do others think? Only someone raised in the intricacies of ‘Class’ would understand. Cathy doesn’t belong but she may survive if she doesn’t break the ‘rules’. Awful but true
