Elle Fanning fainted in Cannes because of her Prada gown & her period

Elle Fanning at the "Chopard Dinner Trophy" evening at the Cannes Film Festival

Because of all of the royal news and Game of Thrones stuff, I kind of ignored some of the Cannes Film Festival fashion drama from the weekend. Did anyone notice? I’m not trying to be mean, I’m just pointing out that this year’s Cannes is kind of weaksauce from a “glamorous/fashion” perspective. Elle Fanning is on the Cannes jury, and she’s been trying to bring the big fashion energy to Cannes, showing up at all of the biggest events and red carpets and wearing lots of interesting couture. Monday night was the Chopard Trophee dinner, just one of a million sponsored events during the festival. Elle wore this beigey-nude Prada dress and Chopard jewels, and something about the dress made her FAINT.

Elle Fanning, a member of this year’s Cannes jury, had a brief scare Monday night when she fainted at the Chopard Trophee dinner. Festival director Thierry Fremaux had just introduced actor Francois Civil onstage when Fanning, star of “The Beguiled” and “Maleficent,” collapsed and fell off her chair nearby.

Fanning was sitting at a table next to sister Dakota Fanning, who helped the actress to her feet before security whisked them away. According to eyewitness, the ceremony was briefly paused as a hush fell over the crowd.

Colin Firth, who was seated close-by, quickly leapt to his feet and offered assistance to the dazed actress. Another shocked onlooker, actress Marion Cotillard, placed a hand over her heart as Fanning was taken away by security.

On her Instagram later on last night, Elle posted a selfie with this message: “Oops, had a fainting spell tonight in my 1950’s Prada prom dress but it’s all good!! #dresstootight #timeofthemonth.” Ah, the combination of a too-tight prom dress and being on her period. I feel her. My guess is that the room was probably warm too – obviously, I don’t go to these kinds of events, but I’ve worn uncomfortable clothes and been stuck in a crowded, warm room and yes, it’s very easy to feel faint. Especially if you’re already cramping or feeling sh-tty because of your period. Poor Elle. At least Colin Firth was there to catch her when she swooned! AHHHH.

Here’s another look from Elle – she wore Dior to the Kering Women In Motion Awards. I truly love this dress!

I would faint too. When I have my period all I want to do is sleep and eat steak.

    • klutzy_girl says:

Days away from my period and literally all I want to do right now is sleep (and eat chocolate). Would love my energy back, thanks!

    • Ashley G says:

Omg! I thought I was the only one. Something just makes me want to eat nothing but red meat. And I can sleep all three days straight and not notice they’ve gone by. Except for the irrational fear of leaking on myself and my white bed sheets that causes me anxiety to go into overdrive. Being a girl is so much fun 🙄

      • Sierra says:

It’s the iron in the red meat that is helping you.

Take a few pure iron tablets while on period and you will feel much better.

    • Safina says:

SAME HERE! All I want is steak and sleep and maybe a good cry hahaha.

    • BchyYogi says:

Uh…no. As a grown person I take care of myself, cancel or step the F up. In this DAY when millions of women are treated like criminals due to one small word CHOICE? This site describes a woman child in a Victorian era starve for beauty FAINT, complete w the staging of Colin Firth “coming to her rescue”? The detail that chased me arse right off this page was an actual grown woman who could do nothing but hold her heart & gasp. Yuck. Disgusting, this is NEWS? NO. THIS IS 2019 NOT 1819. GOODBYE CB. And thanks for getting me back to course work—-

      • Mash says:

@bchyyogi i feel you on this
i did think that was childish of this site and elle fanning…like just cancel or idk not where a crazy dress… or go get looked at by the doctor jeez…im not giving into the damsel in the period stress thing….

  2. Lucy2 says:

Fainting is so scary, hope she’s ok. She probably hasn’t been eating much either, with all the gowns and activities, and that can mess you up.

  3. Lizzie says:

my friend is a fainter – it is worse when she’s on her period or if she is sick. it is weird and scary.

  4. mycomment says:

or not eating for a couple of days to fit into the dress

    • smcollins says:

Unfortunately there’s probably a lot of truth in that, but I’m sure it’s also been a very busy week for her going from one premier/event to the next. I’m glad she’s okay.

    • Eliza says:

Definitely a lot of contributing factors. Fashion parties aren’t known for their food either, or at least for people touching it. And being on the jury is multiple outfit changes and sitting for movies (no popcorn or candy lol). Add in a tight dress and not feeling great…

    • snappyfish says:

Word. This was as much,if not more, of a contributing factor. She is lovely and I hope she is ok but this TMI seems cover for “not eating”

      • snappyfish says:

I wasn’t trying to be snarky but this girl is extremely thin. I was remarking about a previous posters comment about women starving themselves to fit into dresses. If she truly only gets her period once a year (is this by choice, medications?) then she need to gain weight. My sister has suffered bulimia her entire life to the point of ending her periods due to low body fat. It prevented her from having children later in life. It wasn’t meant to be rude. This ridiculous thin standard needs to end. She looks as if she might be Ectomorphic but a once a year period either by choice or nature is unnatural & a medical condition that should be treated. My best to her

      • Jessac says:

@snappyfish certain pills pause your period so to speak. I use to have one once every three months as I ran my packets back to back, but was advised by doctor that I could go indefinitely without one. Several progesterone only pills can stop periods altogether or really limit them, so not just eating disorders that can causethis.

      • Jaded says:

@Raven – those pics were taken 3 years ago. She has thinned down visibly since then. Her jawbone and cheekbones are much more prominent. My bet is it was a tight dress, heat, period and not enough to eat.

  5. serena says:

Oh my god, first of all I feel her and I’m glad she’s okay. Colin Firth really being a gentleman as per usual and now I love him even more (if that’s even possible).

  6. Rae says:

I genuinely didn’t realise people fainted because of their periods. I was ready to roll my eyes at an actress blaming her periods for fainting, but then saw in the comments that it’s not that rare at all.

That’s another thing I have to be grateful for then!

    • Gina says:

Yep, fainted from my period in a hot room and had to be carried out.

    • Amaryis says:

      It’s happened to me before.
      😔

    • Dazed and confused says:

Fainted in front of my World of Construction teacher when I was in Jr. High. Absolutely mortified. Fainting and throwing up were pretty much monthly events for me when I still had periods. I thought it was normal.

  7. bears says:

I sometimes have fainted from lack of eating. My blood sugar gets wonky and if I don’t get some juice or a small snack to tide me over (assuming I can’t sit down right then and eat a meal) it is bad times. Never fainted because of my period though.

    • Ashley G says:

My period makes me lose my appetite and then there’s the period sh*ts, I’m not a fainter. but I can see why someone would faint. I hardly eat anything during that time of the month.

      • OriginalLala says:

you sound like my period twin – no appetite and period poops! such a joy 😉

  8. CharliePenn says:

One of my cousins has this issue. If she’s even slightly hungry while on her period she’s liable to hit the floor. When she’s not on her period she’s athletic, super active, not at all delicate. She does lots of iron supplementation now and also takes those pills that only give you four periods a year because each period is such a trial for her. Not sure how I feel about those as far as how good they are for your hormonal balance, but it’s not my body anyway!

I truly truly hope there was nothing else at play like drugs. She’s so young and talented, I would hate to see that for her.

    • LadyT says:

I fainted dead away at a party in Hawaii. Perhaps the climate change, not eating and hydrating properly. Woke the next morning to whispers of drugs. No. So wrong, hurtful and unfair/unkind. Pissed me off.

  9. KinChicago says:

I have had these heavy periods, this has happened to me multiple times.

The worst is to when I have to go from one extreme temperature to another- a hot to frigid- it’s like my body just maxed out and crashes.

I hope she is recovered. Also, IUD was a miracle at lessening the bleeding. Dunno if that helps anyone else but I hope it does.

  10. Esmom says:

I’m sure that was scary for her, glad she’s ok. Sounds like she had a soft landing, unlike my friend who recently passed out in the middle of the night after going to the bathroom and bruised her face and shoulder.

Except for the bow, I really like her first dress. That skirt is so beautiful. The second dress reminds me of Florida upholstery from the 80s, but in a surprisingly good way. The colors are great.

  11. Mia4s says:

Oh yeah, I am in solidarity. Standing around in tight dresses in the heat and likely not eating too much because of the dresses? Giant no thank you!

The little details on Colin Firth and Marion Cotillard made me laugh for some reason. There were probably a hundred people in the room and people directly helping but it’s news that Colin verbally offered to assist like a decent human and Marion showed concern. Tells you how quiet celeb gossip is at Cannes. It would have been a much better story if Colin had run away screaming for help and Marion threw bread rolls at her…
    ….
Before anyone thinks I’m weird I should probably confess I’m PMS-ing like hell. 😁

    • snazzy says:

Marion threw bread rolls at her … I can’t get that out of my head now! hahahah

  12. Kate says:

So happy for my recent hysterectomy! My endo pain would make me faint a few times a year.

  13. Mumbles says:

Nothing but sympathy for her and you all. I came close to fainting in a hot gym once. Nothing more terrifying than seeing those little dots just before you feel like you’re going to go down….luckily grabbing a seat and drinking lots of water did the trick. But the feeling of losing control….awful.

  14. Gottasayit. says:

I love the way Kaiser covers this stuff. The best one is Marion put her hand to her heart ….bahahahaha. If that was the biggest reaction besides Mr Darcy then those people are cold ! And oh my nerves though. What a great idea. If I ever see Colin in the flesh I am sooooo going to fake fainting so he will catch me. And when I “come to” I’ll whisper very dramatically “Oh Mr Darcy….” . And I agree Mirena IUD saved my life. Horrible heavy periods. My iron stores couldnt even be replenished and now I have my life back. Insurance wouldnt cover it coz it was considered “birth control”. Another way women get punished for having a uterus ! I wrote a scathing letter to my insurance company about that !

  15. Case says:

I’m sure it was a lot of factors. The time change, a very busy schedule, probably not a lot of quality sleeping or eating for many days, heat (I believe it’s quite warm in Cannes right now) plus her period on top of that. I feel for her. Knock wood I’ve never fainted, but periods have only gotten worse for me as I get older – less cramping, but such bad nausea and anxiety.

  16. Hotsauceinmybag says:

I have a hormonal IUD so I don’t have troublesome periods at all anymore but before the IUD had terrible cramping, fatigue and tummy troubles. My only issue now is that if I’m having a rough month emotionally in general I tend to get even bluer when it’s supposed to be that time of the month…
On my second IUD and highly recommend to those interested in trying it out (I know it’s not for everyone though)!

  17. Ye says:

I fainted at my uncles funeral because of my period. There was nowhere to go, no sources of water, the pain was the worst of my life, and the sun was intense. I couldnt put together my thoughts properly. It was like a fuse blew in my head. I wish i had stayed home. I feel for Fanning.

  18. Loren says:

Fainted on the gynecologist table. Naked. Doctor & nurse holding Legs over my head as I’m saying “don’t let me die”. I laugh now but fainting is scary.

  19. Molly says:

What Gina says, above. It’s actually not all that unusual.

  20. A Fan says:

I, too, love that Dior dress!!!
