The long Memorial Day weekend generally brings some shenanigans on social media, meaning that weird things and weird people begin to “trend” for absurd reasons. This is one of those times. On Saturday, “Jon Voight” was trending for hours because he did a video appeal to… Republicans, I guess, about how Donald Trump is the greatest president since Abraham Lincoln and we all need to pray for Trump or something. I honestly couldn’t follow his thought process because I turned this off after 30 seconds (sorry for the Deplorable user video, blah):
I mean… did people only just now realize that Jon Voight has been unhinged about politics? He’s been unhinged for years. I think the Obama presidency really broke Voight – something about seeing an educated, charismatic and beloved Democrat in the White House just threw Voight off kilter and he’s never really recovered. His brain broke and it’s never healed. For years now, Voight has ranted about Israel and Iran and whatever bonkers conspiracy theories are being peddled on right-wing radio shows. Voight has been ride-or-die for Trump for a while too.
The only good thing that came out of this “oh, right, Jon Voight is bonkers” reminder is that so many people were also like “Oh, yeah, that’s right, Angelina Jolie hates her father.” Silver lining!

I was just having a conversation with my husband about this very thing because both our parents have lost all humanity in suppose this thing. I was once again wondering why his base literally worships him and sees nothing wrong with anything he does when they weren’t like this with either Bush or Reagan. Yeah they supported them but there wasn’t this out of their minds-lunacy-cult-like adoration of them that there is with rump and I think one big reason is because of the Obama presidency. I think they sat there raging for eight years and now that they have power again they’ve gone off the deep end. I think they would’ve done it with any republican that got elected but unfortunately for us the lowest of the low got elected and has brought out the worst in these people because he’s the worst.

I think many of the MAGA people are also a lot more scared and angry than they were then, w a lost way of life as mfg and other low skill but once relatively high paying, reasonably secure jobs went away. Rather than pivot, adapt, grow, or even blame the rising inequality that’s a big source of their issues, they’re looking for scapegoats and the plutocrats are all too happy to provide that. That’s what’s so devastatingly scary about these times; we’ve been on this path as a species before and it doesn’t end well…
Fear is very powerful. There is no coincidence that the biggest example of white-privilege would be elected after we had a Black president. They spent 8 years trying to demonize him in order to find a scapegoat for their racism and unwillingness to give up their positions of privilege. Electing Trump was a last ditch effort to reclaim and reinforce white privilege and white ethnocentrism. The worst enemy of MAGA folk are MAGA folk and their unwillingness to adapt and evolve.
There was an article that someone wrote where children of parents who excessively watch Fox News were asked to submit their stories. A LOT of them wrote some variation of, “My parents always leaned somewhat on the Democrat side of things, even if they weren’t a total progressive liberal all of the time…and then Obama got elected. And then they lost their SH*T.”

My in laws voted for Obama twice. Then they started watching Fox and listening to right wing radio. They are crazy people now. NPR just ran a story about how for some reason older people loose their ability to spot a scam and are easily fooled by con artists.

My son’s paternal side (in the US) are for Trump…..I am disengaging. My son’s maternal side (Canadian and British) are not for Trump…..and we’re losing his mind, because in the construction industry, where men are men and swear and grunt many think Trump is doing good work, tho I don’t know why. When I say something about, for example, steel and aluminium tariffs that are hurting them, they say means to an end. I raised him right…seeing him go sideways like this w/the family that abandoned him when he was a baby is really, really hard. Loving him through this hurts me, too.

President Obama loved and was loved by his whole family, including two intelligent, beautiful daughters, who have done nothing to cause him shame and his wife, a brilliant accomplished woman who he clearly adored and admired.
