Prince Louis ‘is a funny little chap. He looked very pleased with himself’

Doesn’t it seem like all of the Cambridge kids have an abundance of personality right from the get-go? I still say that Princess Charlotte seems like the little boss of the family, with George changing from a baby-punching toddler to a more mature and reticent little boy. But Louis might outdo both of his older siblings in the personality department. From the word go, Louis has seemed like a handful, but joyful about it. Like, I think Kate and William had a lot of difficulties with George because he was the first and they were still learning how to be parents. Charlotte was their girl, their little princess, and they doted on her from the start And Lou is just a big, meaty boy with a big personality. We saw more of Lou at the polo event this week, where he was running around and sucking on picnic coolers and wearing his mom’s sunglasses:

It’s hard to upstage Prince George and Princess Charlotte, who have become known for their adorable royal displays over the years, but little brother Prince Louis knows how to get a laugh (and melt hearts) too! The 1-year-old royal was the “unexpected” star of the family’s outing on Wednesday to watch Prince William and Prince Harry compete in a charity polo match, an onlooker tells PEOPLE. While his older siblings were busy kicking around a soccer ball and showing off some dance moves, Louis kept mom Kate running after him as he explored the area.

Before the polo game started, Louis was “scampering out and dashing out to the edge of the polo field, and she was running out after him and picking him up, and eventually she sat down with him at the wooden border and pointed out the horses,” according to another observer. “She took him over to the polo ponies at the polo lines and chatted to the grooms with him.”

The observer adds, “He is a funny little chap. He looked very pleased with himself.”

Then there was the hilarious moment when Louis showed off a new look to Meghan Markle and baby cousin Archie — rocking his mom’s sunglasses! “I’m pretty sure she was wearing them, and he put his hands out. She took them off the top of her head and the next thing is he was wearing them,” the source says. “He had his tongue out and was waving his little hands around,” the observer adds. “He is a real character.”

[From People]

Quite honestly, I can already feel the “history repeating” narrative beginning. When Prince William was little, he already knew he was going to be king one day and that he would be treated differently than his little brother. William already knew that all eyes were going to be on him. Harry never had that pressure, and so that’s how the brothers grew up – William the sturdy, boring one and Harry the ham, the devish charmer, the joker. Will it be the same between George and Lou? Is George “the William” and Louis will be “the Harry”?

those pictures of him are really adorable. Especially if you see all of them in sequence – he grabs the sunglasses, Kate helps him put them on, and then he is clearly so pleased/proud and he looks to Meghan with that expression. All of the Cambridge kids seem to have big personalities, which is fun.

    • Seraphina says:

I so agree. Their boys are a lot of fun to see and I bet fun to be with.

    • Bella DuPont says:

      Louis’ just absolutely gorgeous.

I wish I’d seen pictures of the Cambridge and Sussex children playing together in closer proximity. Or maybe Archie’s still too young for that?

Also, I don’t know a huge amount about babies, but Archie seems (to me), quite big/long/large considering he’s just a couple of months old? He looks like a six month old to me!

      • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

I believe Archie is only two months old. Most babies cannot sit up on their own until they are at least six months. More babies!

      • olive says:

considering harry is 6′ at least and meghan’s dad is like 6’4″ it’s not surprising he’d be a taller baby.

      • Becks1 says:

Archie looks normal to me for a 2 month old but I had big babies, lol, so my perspective is skewed. But even being big hes not going to be ready to really play with Louis for a few more months at the earliest.

  2. Croatian says:

    Yes.

  3. minx says:

He’s an absolute doll. I think he’s going to be mischievous and really fun to watch grow up.

    • Spritzness says:

From the looks of him now I think he’s going to have some size to him! Maybe Uncle Mike will get him into rugby.

  4. Annie... says:

Of course Kate is the mum that brings the healthy and homemade snacks in recyclable bowls haha. She is *such a mum* (in the best sense of the word!)

And I adore little Louis. Everyone in that family does too apparently. He is adorable.

George seems a shy, sweet and reserved boy; and I appreciate that his parents ley him be. Charlotte on the other hand seems to be very outgoing. Louis will probably be like her

    • Mego says:

I don’t think Charlotte is or will be particularly outgoing. I remember her primly telling the media at Louis’ baptism they weren’t invited. My child, who truly is outgoing, would have invited them all to come along and take more pictures of her. Children tend to reflect their parents temperaments and neither William or Kate have outgoing personalities.

      • minx says:

Children don’t necessarily reflect their parents’ temperaments, sometimes they’re just the opposite. You just never know, they surprise you.

      • Mumbles says:

I wonder if that remark was just repeating what her sourpuss father might have said sarcastically just before. It seems like a weird thing for a little kid to say on her own.

When she was a baby/toddler and visited Canada I was smitten by how lively she was. She ran to a bunch of balloons and tried to pop them and was delighted by the dog at the party. And at the Trooping at the Color she’s always engaged and trying to follow along with what’s happening.

What I do notice is she’s a little lady of her own mind. She doesn’t defer to George at events. They play together but he doesn’t boss her around like oldest siblings sometimes do.

      • marjorie says:

When she was a baby/toddler and visited Canada I was smitten by how lively she was.
        ————————————————————————————————————–
When was this? I only remember Kate & William coming here during Stampede & then visiting the US afterwards..

      • Becks1 says:

        @Marjorie – they visited British Columbia in….2016, I believe?

      • marjorie says:

Thanks Becks1 – I completely forgot about that one! I just remember when they came to Stampede in 2011 and were part of the parade.

      • Himmiefan says:

Was the Canada trip where Charlotte threw a small tantrum? Since I wasn’t the parent and did not have to deal with it, I thought she was adorable.

      • chunkyla says:

        @Himmiefan

No that was the Germany/Poland trip in 2017.

      • TeamAwesome says:

I still think Charlotte said “They’re not coming?”, looking for the rest of the family, and it sounded like Kate answered back “They’re coming!” as they walked on.

    • escondista says:

PSA: women are no *less a mum or mom* if they bring juice boxes and pre-packaged chips to events for kids either.

      • Imeanreally says:

Disagree. Maybe junk food (and most juice boxes and chips fall into this category) won’t kill your kids — right away. But it’s still junk. And a little bottle of water and pre-packaged carrot sticks are just as easy.

      • Prairiegirl says:

        Co-signed.

      • ali says:

meh…once in a while it might be okay but to give those high sodium contents to kids ain’t nice. I mean, how hard is to wash some fruit and throw in some oatmeal cookies (homemade or even store bought) into a tupperware? You can’t use the excuse of having no time to feed your children properly these days because it is not difficult at all, there’s so many healthier options than chips.

      • Nicole76705 says:

Agreed escondista…. everything these days will kill you rather right away or later, I’m not worried.

      • Nic919 says:

Well Kate has housekeepers cooks and a few nannies so she doesn’t have the excuse to not have homemade stuff done for the kids, but the rest of the mothers who have jobs and no help, they may not have the time or the money to get the latest organic thing.

      • Kimble says:

Oh my goodness, THIS is why I’d never join any mum groups!!!!

      • CrystalBall says:

Seriously, are you all really feuding about what might or might not have been in the snack box for a kid who has already experienced far more priviledges than you will ever have and whose mother would not even give you the time of day?

      • guest says:

Fresh Fruit and Veg (carrot/cucumber slices etc) is a “new organic thing?” Since when? You must live on another planet. Housekeepers, cleaners and nannies are the norm for many households. You don’t need to be royalty to employ household help, far from it! Shame you will never experience anything remotely like household help, so you point it out every chance you get. The previous poster is correct.

      • Arizona says:

hahaha I only know one person who has a cleaner, and it’s my spoiled rotten coworker who has no children. I don’t know single person who has a housekeeper or a nanny. I think it’s only the norm if you’re at least upper middle class. man, talk about privilege. 🙄

      • Alice says:

        @Nic919
I am a single mom, work full time, immigrant with no family around. I don’t eat junk food and don’t give to the kid. It’s completely doable, manageable and not more expensive to cook for school, pack for lunch or outings and raise a child on home made food. I’ve been doing it for over ten years now. I don’t understand the junk food culture. All this salt and sugar is poison to the body.

  5. OG Cleo says:

As a more introverted person, I’ve never understood why being extraverted and obnoxious (not referring to Louis, just in general) is supposedly “more personality” than someone who is more reserved?

    • Angie says:

I can see why that bothers you! If it makes you feel any better, people say rude crap to extroverts too. I don’t know how many times I was told when I was young “tell us what you really think” or that i had a “strong personality.” It’s because I am a loud opinionated extrovert. When I was young, this upset me so much because I was just being myself and I knew it was an insult. Now I just say something rude back. And don’t even get me started on how men love to praise quiet women like it’s the greatest virtue ever. Anyway my point is you’re not alone. Every personality type gets shamed but i agree- being quiet doesn’t mean you have less personality anymore than it means you are a superior woman.

      • OG Cleo says:

It’s very true, any strong personality type in a woman gets flack 🙄

      • Sania says:

Some of the most introverted people I know have a killer sense of humour. They say such crazy funny things with a straight face! Just a personal observation. I know plenty of extroverts and in-betweeners who are funny too.

      • CrystalBall says:

@Angie: Excuse me, but it sounds like you’re one of the chosen few. Although quiet women are seen as more virtuous, we inevitably get left on the shelf. Other women don’t like us (you made that point!) and men go for the squeaky wheel which gets the most oil in the end. I’m happy for you. Not everyone gets overlooked. Please enjoy the rewards and advantages of your wonderful and popular personality.

      • guest says:

Crystal ball has been left on the shelf so she’s bitter haha. Unsurprising – many women leave their nasty comments for the royals here because they are prob miserable.

    • Phat girl says:

Completely agree. I was an extremely outgoing child and can remember being called bucket mouth by a teacher once. My son however was chronically shy and he had to deal with being told he had the personality of a turtle by one of his teachers. So more or less personality doesn’t matter. However you are, someone who is different will feel the need to point it out and make out that you are better or worse than someone else. Apparently it’s the same whether you are a real live prince/princess or a plebe like me.

      • jennifer says:

turtles actually have a lot of personality, for real! but for a teacher to say that to a child is messed up.

      • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

I hope you took that teacher to task, and to administration.

  6. Melissa says:

Louis us the cutest, but I don’t like this singling out of royal children. Yes, Louis is adorable because he is a fun toddler. What happens when he grows up and no longer wants to be the star? What happens when he starts going through an awkward phase or wants privacy on a date? The media will turn on him like they are turning on Harry. These stories are predictable.

    • SparkinggFlint says:

William and Harry have both been open about mental health struggles and asking for help, things that were obviously not provided by their father. I imagine they will both be conscious of these things with their children.

  7. Who ARE These People? says:

“She took him over to the polo ponies at the polo lines and chatted to the grooms with him.”

Obviously I’m still hung up on the Queen’s visit to the Royal Stud.

  8. Leriel says:

Well George is future king, I don’t think they are already schooling him to be one, but I guess he is told about this. So, being reserved is pretty good for someone who will get a huge responsibility like representing a country and commonwealth.

And I think George started changing when his siblings were born. He definitely doesn’t babysit them, but they spend time together, they live together, he watches them while playing and etc. It teaches responsibility and concentration too, even if you’re privileged from birth till the end of your days.

    • noway says:

I heard that they were actually trying to keep the future King status from George, because William remembers when he found out it was traumatic to him. I think William was about 3. Now George is almost 6 though so I bet he knows. Reality though is when kids are toddlers like Louis a lot do funny crazy things, but as they get older it may change. I would think with paparazzi following you it probably changes you a bit quicker. Voila the reason the Sussexes want to give Archie as much privacy as they can. Harry I know has talked about the intrusiveness too, not surprised on his stance. Not have the future King as your son gives him a bit more leeway too.

  9. Busyann says:

I wonder if they have told George that he is the future king. I recall about a few years ago, they hadn’t, but he’s in school now, so his peers would probably let that slip? I’ve just thought that for the past year or so, George has seemed like he knows.

    • Spritzness says:

I mean, I don’t even think a child that age can comprehend what that means. Basically “Oh you’ll have Gran’s job” might make sense, but I wouldn’t imagine the enormity of the situation would be clear to someone his age.

    • Jessica says:

William made it pretty clear during a recent interview that they haven’t told him yet. The interviewer asked him if George knows ans he didnt answer directly but mentioned that that there will be a time to talk to him about that in the future. I’m not a William fan but it struck me what a hard thing that will be for them…who wants to crush all their kid’s dreams while at the same time you don’t want to tell them they can be whatever they want. Poor George…having your whole life dictated the moment you were conceived.

      • Erinn says:

I can’t imagine how weird of a conversation that would be. I mean, I guess all you can do is drop hints while they’re little from the start that they will have a job like dads/grandpas/great grams. I don’t think the weight of it is something I’d want to discuss until he was older though. Honestly, I’d probably be consulting therapists or something to figure out how to tackle it best.

I know that none of these kids are going to have ‘normal’ lives. But I also do appreciate that they try to let them be kids as much as they can in their position.

      • Marianne says:

I mean to some degree it would be hard because of the lack of privacy and theres still a certain expectation of how to act etc ..but its not like the monarchy really does anything anymore. Its not like George will have to worry about making laws or anything like that.

      • PrincessK says:

Even if they tell him it won’t fully sink in, but one day Prince George will wake up and the enormity will have struck him.

David Beckham said that one day he came in and his youngest son, who was watching TV turned around and asked him, “Are you David Beckham?”…..

    • Deedee says:

Also complicating the situation is the idea that the monarchy could end before George becomes POW or king. This is the 21st century after all.

  10. Flying fish says:

George and Charlotte’s interaction reminds me of Charles and Ann’s relationship as children.

  11. Murphy says:

You only think William is “sturdy” and “boring” bc the press always covered up for him since he’s the heir.
They weren’t as generous to Harry.

    • Nanea says:

The covering up that already started while William was at Eton. He was temperamental, sly, a pain in the ass and rather aloof, according to a friend’s son who was attending the school at the same time as W&H. W’s nickname “Billy the Basher” came from him hitting other kids and teachers at school, and he was regularly threatening to send people to the Tower to have their heads chopped off. Apparently he also was surly and downright nasty at times.

      • SparkingFlints says:

And Harry dressed like an SS officer and filmed himself using racial slurs. They’re both nasty spoiled toffs and always have been.

      • minx says:

        SparkingFlints—agree.

      • Kittycat says:

@SPARKINGFLINTS the point is the press has been covering for William.

      • SparkinggFlint says:

Kittycat – erm, then how would people know about these things?
Lots of stories came out about the boys when they were in school, like Harry’s having to cheat on tests, but the papers covered for them both.

      • Nic919 says:

William has a front tooth fixed because he got so drunk at a wedding he broke it. That was not covered. Whereas the Harry stuff was covered in the media. That’s the point people are trying to make but many wish to be obtuse.

      • aaa says:

William losing the tooth was covered by the media.

William being given the nickname Billy the Basher was covered by the media.

William saying that when he is King that he will have heads chopped off was covered by the media.

William being described as having a temper has been covered by the media.

William being described as sly / sneaky has been covered by the media.

      • Kittycat says:

        @SPARKINGGFLINT

This is a gossip site. The average person doesn’t follow the royals as closely as the people here.

Again the press have covered for William and shielded his image.

  12. The Original Mia says:

Louis reminds me of Boss Baby in those shades. He’s cute. George & Charlotte are cute.

  13. Keira says:

Developmentally, toddlers are more crazy and extroverted than older kids.

  14. MeghanNotMarkle says:

Little Louis looks just like his dad here. Those Windsor genes are strong. I love seeing all the kids out and about. They are adorable.

    • FHMom says:

Yes, but William looked like Diana. He’s a Spencer with maybe a bit of Charles in him.

  15. YankLynn says:

I happened on an instagram pic of Meghan with some poster making her snide remark about how Meghan not only didn’t know how to hold her baby but was obviously there just to get media attention as usual. I had to stop reading comments before I got too rage-y. But I noticed that of course there was no similar comment from that poster about Kate’s craving media attention by putting her sunglasses on Louis to get noticed. And yes, that is ridiculous too but the Meghan haters never seem to get the irony of singling out Meghan at an event where Kate is doing the same exact things — touching her children in public while her husband plays polo. Ugh, those people.

    • Gingerbread says:

Kate was craving attention by putting sunglasses on her son? Have you ever met a toddler? You’re complaining about people being unfair, while you’re doing the same. Yes, Meghan haters are super obnoxious. But so are Kate haters. If you’re a public figure, you’re always going to have them. These women shouldn’t be pitted against each other.

      • minx says:

Sunglasses are a great diversion for toddlers, they are fascinated with them.

      • Hope says:

She’s not saying that Kate did it for attention, rather that if Meghan had done that it would been called thirsty and attention-seeking rather than normal behavior for Kate and for Meghan.

      • YankLynn says:

Gingerbread and minx, I was being a little sarcastic and didnt express my frustration clearly. I was just pointing out the comments on Insta calling Meghan shamefully media hungry and having Archie out as attention seeking. But they didnt take an equivalent swat at Kate for having her kids out in front of cameras or call Kate attention seeking when she let her toddler goof with her glasses. Of course it wasnt. But Meghan’s arm positions were actressy publicity stunts apparently.

    • Amy Too says:

In the same post on here yesterday where people were talking about how awkward Meghan looks holding Archie and how she doesn’t know how to hold a baby, there’s was a picture of Kate holding Louis one handed, against her body, facing out, by the crotch. I don’t find that weird or sexual in any way (obviously, he’s a baby), but I just found it so telling that Meghan was supposedly holding Archie all weird and “awkwardly,” but Kate holding her son in what can look to others to be a truly awkward or weird way wasn’t mentioned. I’m just picturing what people would say if a man or a stranger was holding a child with their hand over the kid’s crotch. Like when people got all grossed out about David Beckham kissing his daughter. If it’s really about holding your children the best, most appropriate, most Royal way or whatever, people would be taking about both of them. But it’s not about that, of course, it’s about bashing Meghan.

      • lulu who says:

Ummm, that is how everyone holds a baby, especially an active 1+ year old who wants to interact with the world? I wouldn’t think twice if I saw a dad holding their child like that, it’s incredibly common. People not mentioning that had nothing to do with Meghan (who is also holding her baby in a completely normal way).

      • Anitas says:

What a weird thing to notice about Kate and Louis. Any normal people wouldn’t see anything weird or sexual about the way she was holding him, or if it had been William, you’d have to be 100% insane to think that. Which I know many Meghan critics are.

Problem is many non-crazy people also don’t know much about infant anatomy and healthy positioning, neither did I until I had my baby and had to learn more. Meghan held Archie just fine IMO, she supported his head, his hips and allowed his spine to curve naturally. But people think it’s not only ok but good for their development to put young babies in bumbo seats, walkers, jumperoos, those crotch dangling baby carriers etc. My son didn’t walk independently until 15 months old, which is well within the ‘normal’ range, but the number of comments I received about how I should be teaching him how to walk, and a walker “would help” etc. So I think some of the criticism of Meghan’s pics with Archie is certainly from the obsessed haters but some is just garden variety concern trolling from people who think they know better, something I believe almost every mother has to put up with.

On another note, I would love to see Meghan carry Archie in one of the baby carrying wraps, there are absolutely gorgeous designs that would work as a fashion statement too. A wrap is so helpful especially in this early baby stage when they’re in your arms constantly. Being able to carry my baby close but also have my hands free truly saved my sanity.

  16. Hope says:

Has anyone read Susan Cain’s Quiet?

I forget the terms she used but she described sensitive, generally more introverted people as more likely to have big reactions as little kids because everything gets to them and they have no filter at that age. When they’re older, they seem more reserved because they’re more easily overwhelmed than more extroverted children who need stronger forms of stimulation and are drawn towards change and new situations.

When I read that, I thought of George and his big personality as a baby and how he clearly doesn’t like crowds now. I wouldn’t be surprised if the same thing happens with Louis. Charlotte on the other hand always has seemed more composed and I think she will be the extrovert in the family.

  17. Fluffy Princess says:

Louis is adorable! He’s so cheeky and fun. But then again, all the Cambridge kids are exuberant, joyful and obviously happy.

I wonder if Wills sourpuss face is just a public thing, and at home with his children, he’s actually a fun dad who plays around and has a good time. It’s obvious that Kate loves being a mom, but William might love being a dad too — but just doesn’t want to share that with the public?

I can’t see all the children being so happy when out and about if Will was a jerkface at home.

  18. Scandi says:

There has always been a ´William´ and a ´Harry´ in the line of succession.

There were Charles and Andrew/Edward. The latter were both highly popular compared to the introvert Charles.

Then there were Margaret and the Queen, where Elizabeth was more sturdy and serious, whilst Margaret was the funny and scandalous one.

Their father and uncle had the same dynamic, only reversed. While the Queen´s father was more introvert and serious (also due to his speech problems), Edward was obviously the charmer. He would have loved to be second to the throne, because he hated the duties that came with the crown.

So.. there definitely will be the same dynamic in the pool of Cambridge siblings.

  19. tuille says:

George is often pout-y in pictures, at least the ones I’ve seen. When he plays with other kids, he sometimes looks happy. He didn’t look outgoing at the recent Trooping. Louis looks like a happy little guy, more animated than George was at that age & Charlotte is definitely extroverted & bold. She appears to have more “personality” than George does.

  20. Dee Kay says:

Looking at these pics of adorable Louis and Archie, I’m sad that Diana didn’t get to be a grandmother. Imagine if we had pics of a gorgeous older Diana holding her cutie pie grandbabies!!!! I bet those would have been the most sought-after RF pics by far.

  21. Mrs.Krabapple says:

Lots of pics of the kids in the past few days. It almost made me forget about Andrew and Epstein. And I’ve totally forgotten all about William and Rose. Nice work, cute little kiddies!

    • PrincessK says:

The most interesting thing the Cambridge’s have are their children and they know it.

  22. SURFCHICK says:

    He’s mint. And Charlotte….I can’t. Too funny.
