Gwen Stefani covers the November issue of Shape. The editorial is good because… well, if you’ve been paying attention to Gwen the past few years, she’s been looking kind of jacked in photos and in motion. She keeps doing these weird tweaks to her face. But she looks like old-school Gwen in these photos. Gwen’s promoting The Voice, but she’s always got a million other side projects, so mostly this is just a chat about fashion, gym time, work-life balance and Blake Shelton. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:
On downtime & work: “I love having projects. But I also love to be in my bed and have downtime. I love to know that I don’t have the guilt of being so busy that I miss out on taking my kids to school.”
Her home life with Blake Shelton: On the nightstand is a box of chocolates from Shelton, who the day before played entertainment committee for her three sons—the older ones are Kingston, 13, and Zuma, 11—so she could do an all-day photo shoot for her eyewear collections. “He’s a feeder. He’ll go, ‘Here, I bought you some candy.’ I feel as if I spent the last four years healing—you know, trying to build my life again. Having a best friend like Blake to help me do that has been one of the greatest gifts.”
She still buys clothes when there’s a big sale: “I’ve been shopping my face off buying looks for when we do reality days on the show. They just had sales online, so I went crazy. Forty percent off on Yoox? I’m all over it!” Gwen is such a deep-down true believer in fashion with a virtuoso eye that she’s not above digging in the trenches. She not only works looks but lives them, and she’s not waiting for a stylist to play dress-up. “I’m passionate because fashion is such an extension of whatever your mood is or where you are in your life and what you’re trying to say,” she says. Right now, her office is filled with her designer bargains. “After I get off the phone, I’m doing my own fitting.”
Kids made her more organized: “One thing the kids have taught me is how to be more organized. I lived at home until I was 26, then I had a tour manager, then a manager, then an assistant. On tour, you even have somebody who has the key to your hotel room. But as a mom, you have to be the one in charge.”
Staying fit: “I have no magic thing that I do to stay fit. I eat really clean, do my shows, and work out. I always feel better when I’m in a routine even though I sometimes hate it. I play tennis, badly, with Blake. Then we go to the gym. I like to do squats and lunges and light weights. I don’t go crazy like I used to. I do just enough to make my body feel good.”
Her roots: “I’m an unusual product of an ordinary California family. My parents met in high school, my mom never worked, and we went to church on Sundays. Now I get to travel the world. And spending time in the middle of America [on Blake’s ranch]—that’s something I didn’t expect. The way we live at the ranch is really simple. There are watermelons that Blake planted and all my wild flowers. It’s a nice contrast to L.A., although I do keep 20 chickens in the backyard here at home too.”
I love Blake Shelton a little bit now that I know he’s a “feeder.” I honestly love men like that, men who are like “baby, here’s some chocolate, let’s go out and have a big dinner.” Of course, I grew up in a house where food = love, so I always see gifts of food as tokens of love. And Blake and Gwen play tennis! Gwen used to go to tennis matches all the time when she was with Gavin Rossdale, who was good friends with Roger Federer (although they don’t seem to be super-tight these days). I also love that Gwen still shops sales. That, to me, is a sign of a true fashion-lover.

I started watching the Voice when Kelly came on, and Gwen is back this season…I don’t get her fashion sense at all. It always looks like she’s in a weird costume, and she never looks comfortable or confident in it. But whatever. She is in great shape though, she must work out a LOT.
I agree that she doesn’t look at ease in those really high pop star getup-leather, corsets and high stilettos, but she’s certainly been consistent with it over the last 20 years. I think about the first 10 years of her career- the height of ska, on stage she was ELECTRIC. For those too young to remember, look up her mid 1990s performances: cargo pants, combat boots, sweat dripping down her face, prowling the stage, belting out songs with an unself-conscious energy and a sort of power that felt masculine. I was 11/12 and thought she was the most free figure- she didn’t diminish herself in any way or pander to the media culture. She was amazing
Another successful Halloween, I had a great night but I’m all sugared out. Need to make a plan.
I love Gwen, No Doubt will always be one of my favorite bands
I love Gwen & Blake together. They seem like a great match.
I like Gwen.
I wish her happiness. She got a rotten thrashing all her years with Gavin. That jackass.
If she and Blake are enjoying their time together…more power to them.
I think she is in great shape but, that cover photo looks as if her face has a layer of plastic over it.
She can look better with a more natural makeup palette.
She ruled the stage and made No Doubt successful, she gave it her all in live performances.
In her No Doubt era, her performances live were truly epic and so wildly free, barely any make up, nothing frilly, just her. It’s been so interesting to sée how she emerged with such a different and opposite persona once she married and became a solo artist.
I’m sorry, but the first two pictures show how really inflated her lips are. She looks best with less plumping, less makeup, less orgasm face.
She is so pretty, seems like a sweet person, and I love that she takes risks with fashion! Her style has always been cool. I didn’t really get the whole Blake thing at first, but they seem happy, so I wish them well. Their relationship is starting to grow on me.
Saw her in vegas on a whim a few weeks ago… 40 $ for a nose bleed ticket – which wasn’t really nosebleed because zappos theatre isn’t too big…
it was a fantastic show and probably the best 40$ i have spent in a long time!!!
She put on a great show and performed for almost 2 hours! I recommend to all to catch this if treat if you can!!!
I love the patterned tights on the cover! Between hers and Katie Holme’s polka dot ones a little while ago I think we are into some good fall tights fashion.
I don’t think her fashion sense has been good in years. It was better before she had a stylist and went all Hollywood. Her 90’s look is iconic and her best fashion era was during Return of Saturn. I wish she would experiment more with her look. The blonde hair is tired. She would look beautiful and even younger with her natural hair color or something close to it.
I just don’t know about her future with Blake. It seems like they are more friends than lovers. I don’t see chemistry between them.
She clearly likes bad boys ala Gavin. Blake looks like any ole drunk I could find sitting at the honky tonk bars. Have you guys seen how fit Gavin is at 54!?! She definitely downgraded in the looks category.
Looks aren’t all that matters – Gavin was an unfaithful douche. I learned early on not to trust the pretty boys, that the average guy has wayyyyy more to give.
I’m really suprised that she has time to wait for clothing items to GO ON SALE?! Plus – she’s extremely wealthy AND doesn’t she have her own fashion line? I would expect that designers would be GIVING her clothes all the time, too. Her shopping “sales” is something she shares and does to be relatable, I guess – but for some reason it IRKS me whenever I hear wealthy people talking about being thrifty. Like it’s a FUN SPORT for them, whereas it’s an absolute NECESSITY for me. (Boo-hoo.)
