The 2020 Golden Globe nominations are here! I’m splitting up the nominations into two posts, one for film and one for television. This is the television nomination post. It’s been an exciting year for Peak TV, but we also saw “the last water cooler show,” Game of Thrones, end its run with a whimper and not a bang. Streaming services are not just an issue for the film industry, they’re also a concern for the TV industry and how to recognize quality shows which are still finding their audience on a streaming platform. I feel like there are more shake-ups with the TV noms though, as people are faster to recognize new shows, and that’s doubly true for the Golden Globes. You can see this year’s nominations here. My general feeling is that the British peeps will have a good time: The Crown is clearly a favorite in drama, and Fleabag is a favorite in Comedy. And perhaps Killing Eve is a favorite as well. I could also see Succession winning Best Drama, or maybe the HFPA wants to give Apple+ a cookie for starting up. What else… surprised at the noms for Big Little Lies because the second season was garbage. Oh… no Game of Thrones for Best Drama, LMAO. GOOD. Also: Fosse/Verdon for everything!!

Jeremy Strong was so robbed!! Can’t believe Brian Cox took his spot, hopefully the SAG and the Emmys give him a nomination.
Nah, Brian Cox is brilliant in Succession. It’s Kit Harington that should’ve been passed over for Jeremy.
I also don’t think Reese Witherspoon is good in The Morning Show. Aniston is doing well, but Witherspoon is playing a character that would’ve made much more sense if she was a decade younger and she’s not really doing anything interesting with it.
I think Reese is OK in the show, but it’s really more of a supporting role, especially in the later episodes.
@Bex, I agree. Reese’s role should have been for someone younger. It is like some sort of ingenue who is starting out but doesn’t have any direction. I really like The Morning Show but Reese should not be nominated. Aniston is much better and is carrying the show.

Jeremy Strong is incredible. One of the best performances I’ve ever seen, and I’m not just saying that because I watched, like, 5 Hallmark Christmas movies over the weekend which set the bar low.

The GG noms this year is more of the same. More dude films. Few if any PoC. the industry is all about lip service when it gets called out, but never make any actual change. Sadly the oscars will likely be the same way. Awful

I want Jodie or Olivia to win but with CAA going hardcore for Jennifer Aniston and possibly Reese, I think the chances are slim.

And I am TELLING YOU…that Fosse/Verdon miniseries…is damn near…PERFECTION!!!! We KNOW what Sam Rockwell can do with a character…and let’s be honest…Bob Fosse, emotionally and psychologically is NOT that far out of the wheelhouse of characters that Rockwell has played through his career…but what MICHELLE WILLIAMS DOES WITH GWEN VERDON? I swear…sometimes…I thought…I was ACTUALLY LOOKING AT GWEN…LISTENING TO GWEN! Michelle deserves…ALL of the accolades…do you hear me…ALL OF THEM!

Fosse/Verdon was spectacular and Michelle and Sam even more so. I loved it
Sam Rockwell deserves all the awards. I haven’t seen the show he’s nominated for but he always puts in a strong performance. Far better actor than most of his generation.

I really liked Chernobyl; I started watching it on a long flight from Asia and was actually a bit annoyed that the plane landed before I could finish the whole thing, lol. (I caught up later, of course.) For a series with only 5 eps, it packed a punch.
Chernobyl is phenomenal! If it doesn’t win best drama, at the very least Jared Harris deserves the best actor trophy. He’s incredible.
Chernobyl should win. One of the best, most thought provoking series I have ever seen. Brilliant acting by Jared Harris and Stellan Skarsgard (I love him in anything)

As much as he deserves it, I’m annoyed that Billy Porter is the only one recognized in Pose AGAIN.

oh Game of Thrones got snubbed, for sure. Kit is the only one nominated? The last season wasn’t as good as the previous seasons, obviously, but it was still one of the biggest shows of the year. I would have thought it would have gotten a nom for best drama just because it was the last year for it.
It’s a damn shame the last season destroyed any rewatch desire that I had. Such hopes…I don’t think any of them deserved to be nominated but not through any fault of their own

I really hope Game of Thrones is a warning to networks/channels/services to not to start planning the sequels before you’ve stuck the landing on the original.

I feel the same way about Aniston. Like Jennifer Lopez in Hustlers, Aniston is rocking my world in the performance of her career on TMS. I hope that she wins so that she will continue to seek out similar material that focuses on her surprising range and depth as an actress instead of fluff that just cashes in on her celebrity.

It’s kind of cool that two women who have been kind of dismissed as “lesser than” actors are doing their best work at 50. It’s almost like life and experience counts for something, and there are interesting stories out there for women beyond the ingenue…

I am wondering the SAME thing, but I have to say, I kept seeing The Watchmen in my SAG nomination magazines and HBO leaflets. It was DEFINITELY SAG Award Eligible…
I think they have a different deadline for tv because Regina King needs to get nominated for the Watchmen. She is brilliant.
I think the HFPA usually likes her so I’m hoping it is just a timing thing.

The Kominsky Method is one of the best shows I’ve seen in years. Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin are solid gold as is the writing. The only downer is that there are only 8 episodes in each of the two seasons.

Sasha Barron Cohen should win for The Spy. It was really, really, good and pretty accurate. My in laws lived in Syria at the time of Eli Cohen and they even loved it.

Killing Eve, The Kominski Method and The Morning Show are my favorite shows. I am so glad. Jennifer Aniston is FANTASTIC in The Morning Show, So well deserved – the role of her life. Good for her!
I’m kind of bored with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, I think the best comedy that people obviously aren’t watching is Schitt’s Creek. I love it so much. I also really enjoyed Fleabag, it’s my fave on this list.
Yeah, I just watched the third season. The costumes, sets, etc. are unbelievably authentic and fun to see, but I feel as if they are starting to repeat themselves. The subplots with Joel and Midge’s parents and in-laws just set my teeth on edge, they’re so improbable.
I enjoy Maisel well enough, but it’s in the Downton Abbey habit of “oh this has great period designs and costumes, heap the awards upon it!”
i would definitely add Schitt’s Creek, and the Good Place, to the comedy category.
I wish Schitts Creek was nominated too. Moira Rose is one of my favorite television characters ever.
Yes! Schitt’s Creek is so good! I couldn’t get into it at first, but a friend told me that it has what is maybe her favorite love story on television, so I pushed through. Boy was it worth it! The character evolution is slow, but so rewarding. Daniel Levy said he wanted to make sure their changes are earned.
That scene at the open mic night? Apparently Catherine O’Hara couldn’t stop crying, so they had to shoot around her. You can see her at one point reaching for tissues. And then Cabaret? Oh, don’t get me started. So, so good! I love all the characters so much & want good things for each of them in the final season.
I am not sure why Tobias Menzies got a nomination. Not to say he was bad, but he was just “there.” Prince Philip did so little this season. I am sure there are 5 others more deserving of the spot than him this season.
I will add that I really didn’t feel like they gave Olivia Coleman much to do on this season of the Crown. It was so disappointing. All about the men!!

super disagree! Listen to how Tobias speaks in interviews, then listen to how Prince Phillip speaks in interviews: it’s dead on. And the episode where they’re watching the moon landing and his absolute fascination and then disenchantment with aging, it was incredible to watch. So so happy for him!

I’m sort of shocked Emily Mortimer didn’t get a nod for Chernobyl, particularly at the expense of Helen Mirren in Catherine the Great. I normally like Helen a lot but come on, that series was terrible!
JEREMY STRONG WAS ROBBED. Crazy omission. I like Tobias Menzies and he was very good but it was not a lead actor role. Kit…ugh. Mr.Robot is unwatchable I cannot believe they are seriously still watching that. Also When They See Us was so much better and evenly executed storytelling (not even mentioning the importance of the story itself) than Fosse/Verdon, which had two really pointless episodes and was patchy at best.
I agree that Jeremy Strong was robbed. He was amazing in this past season and to have Kit Harington get a nom is the worst. Tobias Menzies at least did something decent with his role but having long hair and broody looks is not acting.

I know Michelle Williams will win for Fosse/Verdon because she was, unsurprisingly, absolutely brilliant as Gwen Verdon. However, I’m so glad to see that Kaitlyn Dever and Merritt Wever were nominated for their performances in “Unbelievable,” which was probably my favorite thing I’ve seen in about 5 years. It was so emotionally impactful and their performances were wonderful. If you haven’t seen in yet, I couldn’t recommend it more (though I do admit it’s a heavy series).
I hope Merritt Wever wins. All the performances in Unbelievable were excellent but she was something special. She doesn’t promote herself much but she won two Emmys without really promoting herself so, fingers crossed! That show was (to my surprise) one of the best things on TV for ages. I was wary because I’m tired of rape on TV and the lazy way it’s portrayed but it really upended that by truly focusing on women. It is a quietly revolutionary show in many ways. Netflix didn’t seem to push it but it became a well-deserved hit through word of mouth.
