Justin Trudeau is 48 years old and the man is truly the Paul Rudd of world leaders. Trudeau will look boyishly handsome until he’s well into his 70s, probably. He’s just got that kind of (Paul Rudd-esque) face. OR DOES HE? Whenever Paul Rudd has a beard, he somehow looks even younger than before. But Justin Trudeau grew out a salt-and-pepper beard over Christmas and all I can see is HOT. The beard suits him so much! It ages him, but in a good way. It makes him look more mature and like Canada’s maple daddy.
Justin Trudeau is sporting a new, more serious look to go with his more businesslike approach to being prime minister. He has returned from more than two weeks vacation in Costa Rica with a salt-and-pepper beard. Trudeau’s new look was revealed in a photo posted Monday on Instagram by his official photographer, Adam Scotti. Trudeau later tweeted another photo showing him and Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan being briefed by military officials on developments in Iraq.
It’s not clear whether the beard is here to stay, at least for a while, or just the temporary result of not bothering to shave while on vacation — the Prime Minister’s Office offered no immediate comment on the matter. But for now at least, Trudeau is the first prime minister to sport a full beard since Mackenzie Bowell, who served from 1894 to 1896.
I always wondered what Barack Obama would have looked like with a salt-and-pepper goatee or full beard. I bet he would look really nice too. But American politicians tend to avoid most facial hair, at least that’s how it seems. Who was our last president to have a beard or mustache? I’m trying to think. Abraham Lincoln. US Grant. Hayes and Garfield both had big beards too. Teddy Roosevelt and Howard Taft both had mustaches. And after that, facial hair began to be phased out of the American presidency. Once again, I’m so jealous of Canadians.

“The Paul Rudd of world leaders”/ “Canada’s maple daddy” = hahahahaaa!! Kaiser, you’ve outdone yourself; this writing is delightful 🙂
Also, the beard is def hot
lol yes I laughed at Maple Daddy and I agree, my Prime Minister is 50 shades of sexy.
Canada’s maple daddy! 😆😆😆 I love it. I think he looks very handsome either way. Not always a facial hair girl but this is a good look.
hot! melania and ivanka will be on their worst behaviour when they see him with it.
He can still get this cake
Justin is very lucky he takes after his rather beautiful mother. He has great hair. Not sure i like his beard. He looks better clean cut.
I had to smile at the pic of him being briefed on Iran. It’s so very Canadian. Just a plain room with a few people. Very low key. Not a huge table bulging with men in uniforms all bristling with metals as we see in the States.
Many First Nations communities in Canada don’t have clean drinking water. And some haven’t had it for twenty years!
I don’t care how Trudeau looks with beard until that issue is resolved. He isn’t as progressive as he is made out to be.
He has lifted many, many boil water advisories. He has done more in this area than any other Leader. While not perfect, the situation has certainly improved under Trudeau.
Organizations (especially governmental) are acknowledging we live and work on Indigenous lands. Indigenous Studies are moving into the regular curriculum (as far as I hear from a few students, anyway, and I’m in Ontario). Small steps, some “merely” symbolic but at least it’s the beginning of some respect. Not enough, too slow, too late, but probably about as much as might happen under the NDP and definitely more than would happen under the Conservatives. Not an A grade, but not a Fail either.
plus 1 to pineapple, he has done more for 1st nations water quality then his predecessors, however far more work needs to be done.
co signed Canadian
I dont think a gossip site is the place to discuss why so many communities dont have drinking water.
I’ve learned a lot outside of celebrity gossip here from knowledgeable commenters. This is a good place to discuss issues like clean drinking water IMO, as long as everyone is respectful.
@Pineapple that wasn’t mentioned in the articles I read but I’ll look into it!
@Ali if a post is about a politician I think it’s reasonable to discuss politics. Furthermore I like how commenters here have a respectful conversation about differing perspectives.
I think EVERY site is a place to talk about why people in first world countries don’t have drinking water.
These things shouldn’t be swept under the rug.
This gossip site has for years attracted and retained informed commenters who really like to key off celebrity topics to learn about the larger world. Those who don’t like it can stick with the main stories.
@Abby I agree…..I have learnt so much from so many on this site. I’m open to different points of view, cause everyone has different viewing points; I learn perspective on this site. I learn of issues not discussed on ‘mainstream’ media.
I like that we can discuss world impacts whilst discussing, for example, hair styles (I did not know people were being fired for their hairstyles, specifically black women protecting their hair with their styling, until I came here). So whilst being respectful is #1 I think it’s okay to discuss our passions and responses to world news.
Your privilege is showing…
Can i ask a question? My native friends tell me it is the corrupt chiefs that dont disperse the money fairly given by the federal govt and this is why the band members suffer (ie. Lack of drinking water, etc). Can someone speak to this?
amen @MarcelMarcel. Justin is only good in that our neighbours leader is so bad. I am concerned with the fentanyl crisis in the downtown eastside of Vancouver, homelessness in that same area, cost of living in Vancouver, pipelines, and First Nations rights. As long as Trudeau is addressing these issues he could look like a fricking gargoyle and I wouldn’t care.
@Ooshpick Agreed.
@Jamie. I’ve been to drought stricken communities in Australia and it’s heartbreaking. Having no drinking water had all these consequences I couldn’t even imagine. Like dogs having heat stroke and kangaroos holding off on pregnancies due to water scarcity. The best solution here is to return water management to Traditional Landowners.
Also! My friend was telling me earlier today that in Queensland people break into properties to sell water tanks.
Agreed agreed @ooshpick,
Unfortunately his minority government isn’t dealing with these issues. Instead he’s passing pipelines and pretty much ignoring the crises that are happening across the country in favour of taking some selfies. Quelle suprise!
Ooshpick … the only other viable option at Election time was a Conservative. They don’t even attend debates at the Homeless Missions here in Ottawa. All the other politicians will go but the Conservative will be absent. If you truly care about these issues, Trudeau was and is your best shot.
“Canada’s Maple Daddy” I am dead lol.
Pour the Syrup, Sir
One Canadian vote for hot please. XO
This dude is so frikkin hot! Ugh Canada is so lucky!!!!!
And he’s so laid back with a great sense of humor. He goes on This Hour has 22 minutes (CBC comedy show) and they say some pretty harsh things to and about him. He rolls with it. He and Mark Critch are hilarious together. He isn’t perfect but he’s pretty darn good
Trudeau’s public persona is much more serious after his catastrophic trip to India and the blackface drama. The Liberals PR team have him on a tight leash.
It has to be a deliberate move to age him and make him look more mature as he won’t face a weak clown like Andrew Sheer in the next election.
Spot on analysis Maxine. Couldn’t agree more.
Politics aside, I think the beard looks good.
Yes, I think it’s Vacation Beard x Image = Gravitas. Between the Iran crisis and the loss of 63 Canadians in the Tehran plane crash, he’ll need it.
We think often how he must have thought he’d be governing alongside a Hillary Clinton-led United States and instead he got … Trump. Far bigger challenge than expected. But he was probably better prepared for the world stage than any of the other party leaders (and that probably had something to do with his retaining power).
Completely agree with you Maxine.
Im Canadian and my summary of JT is such:
Too much publicity, not enough policy.
or, as my late Father would say, “all talk, no trousers”
I grew up in the Northwest Territories and have many opinions on what the government can be doing for Canada’s Indigenous peoples. But that’s another discussion for another board!
My husband sports a salt & pepper beard so I’m definitely on the side of it being hot 😉
Just got back from a trip home to Toronto (I live in Austin) and we had a political conversation with just about everyone. Most Canadians I know look beyond whether he’s hot and into his actual politics – he’s done quite a few dumb things, but there hasn’t been anyone better to vote for.
Having said that, I do like the beard on him.
If you were in downtown Toronto, you might have been talking to a core of NDP supporters. The Liberals get it from both sides – often deservedly. He’s done some dumb, some smart and a lot of typical things. Most folks I know seem at least a little bit relieved that the Liberals are in but have to cut deals — it wasn’t a good time to rock the boat, and he’s handled Trump and Trump trade about as well as anyone possibly could.
I think he is undergoing an image makeover and the beard is part of that. More gravitas and less sunny ways.
Hot. Definitely hot! He can be my Maple Daddy any day.
Besides the briefing looking serious, I’m sure it actually WAS serious…without the stupid pomp the current US administration is obsessed with, but containing the diversity the US is sorely lacking. If we had a mix of people In the admin besides fawning old white men sucking up to Trumpolini, maybe we wouldn’t be in this mess.
I really appreciate that we handle so many things in a lower key here. It’s no less serious or competent. We get the job done.
Saw some headline about countries with more women in leadership roles being more peaceful…did I imagine it or what?
Cue the satire articles from the Beaverton about Trudeau’s evil twin taking over LOL.
I wonder if the beard will intimidate Trump; the orange one really does make most decisions about people based on their appearance. I really hope Canada stays the hell out of this Iran mess the Trump started.
Well, there was reports last night that some of our troops have been moved out of harm’s way or pulled out altogether in Iraq. He started this, he can deal with it. I just pray this doesn’t escalate.
Bathe him and have him sent to my room, stat.
I’m feeling it, but Jagmeet still rocks the hotter beard.
Totally agree. Love Jagmeet
That man can wear a suit like nobody’s business.
YES! Im here for some Jagmeet love!
I met Jagmeet Singh at a book signing he is an interesting intelligent compassionate man. If not for the Manitoba NDP leader who was standing beside him and no real contender in my riding I would have voted NDP especially after Jody Wilson Raybould and Jane Philpot were removed from caucus. I liked my Liberal candidate but quit volunteering for her after the Liberals announced they were appealing the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ruling regarding Indigenous children in care. I am still annoyed with Trudeau and if the NDP recruit serious contenders I will switch..Jagmeet had the salt and pepper beard prior to Trudeau, he looks terrific in photos but somehow is more attractive in person. Trudeau is a good looking guy but the photos don’t show his privileged, cocky and arrogant personality.
Yes, I agree, Singh is the true Maple Daddy.
Yep Singh = true maple daddy.
I just googled him because American, and THANK YOU. Canada: leading the world in universal healthcare and hot politicians.
Canada’s maple daddy made me snort my coffee. Objectively, I can see he’s a handsome man and he is charming in person, but I feel no attraction to him.
I work in the area of Reconciliation. There has been a complete turnaround in attitude and policy from the top down from the Harper years.
Are things fixed or solved? Of course not. It is still at a crisis level. But, I’ve seen at the ground level more positive implementation in the past 5 years vs the previous 20 years.
There is a lot work to do and a lot more changes that we settlers need to make at the government and societal level.
AND if the Conservatives get into power??? Reconciliation, Education, Environment anything decent Canadians care for goes away. Being hard on Trudeau is CRAZY given what our choice was. Andrew Sheer was and is a mini Harper. I would take Justin and an unfortunate and idiotic pipeline over a Conservative any day, every day. That being said, I hope Trudeau has read The Sixth Extinction by Elizabeth Colbert. We all should. Pipelines are 1993 thinking.
This Ottawa girl (who beeteedubs has met JT twice) is suddenly a touch homesick. The bilingual tweet! The maple emoti. All of it.
As a world leader, he’s overrated/can’t help but seem golden in comparison to Trump.
But I would hit it like a voter registration drive.
“I would hit it like a voter registration drive.” Perhaps the BEST, BEST LINE I have ever read here!!!!!!$!!!!!! And that is saying something!!!!!
Thanks! Got to make it topical since he’s a PM. 😉
Seconded! I would take Jagmeet over Trudeau all day. He’s intelligent, well spoken and is so extremely humble. I met him at an event in Burnaby and he took the time to listen, shake hands and talk with every single person that wanted time with him. Very little entourage or security around him. He is a master at handling hecklers (even the super racist, bigots), remains calm and classy.
And have you seen his wife? What a gorgeous couple!
