I’ve talked about this a few times over the past few weeks, but I’m hella disengaged from this year’s awards season. I don’t really have a favorite, nor do I have one film which I’m actively rooting against. My one big thing this year was “I hope Jennifer Lopez wins an Oscar for Hustlers” but… my girl wasn’t even nominated. So that’s what I’m steamed about this season. Let’s see if the other 2020 Oscar nominations liven things up. You can see the full list of Oscar nominations here. Here are the biggest categories:

The Best Supporting Actor category is what everybody expected. There was some conversation that maybe some of the actors from Parasite would end up with a nomination, or maybe Shuzhen Zhao or Awkwfina from The Farewell, but no, Scarlett Johansson is the only Asian actress Hollywood recognized. And the Jennifer Lopez snub… MY GOD HOW DO YOU EVEN DO THAT. Other notable snubs: no Taron Egerton for Rocketman, which… isn’t surprising, actually. No Beyonce in Best Song for “Spirit.” No Robert DeNiro for The Irishman. No Christina Bale (Ford v. Ferrari) or Adam Sandler (Uncut Gems). No Awkwfina (as I said) and no Lupita Nyong’o. No Greta Gerwig for Best Director (which I was expecting). No Noah Baumbach for Marriage Story, which I was NOT expecting. *deep breath* Yeah, I’m only really mad about J.Lo.

WTF Scarlett got two nominations
Just what I was going to say. Blech.
She really didn’t do all that much in JoJo Rabbit! If anything, I think the boy, Roman….?… got robbed! He was awesome!
This is baffling. But I think she’s a mediocre actress at best.
Rich white people don’t cancel their friends for awful takes. They reward them. No publicity is bad publicity because people love rewarding people for “starting a conversation” as if we haven’t been talking about whitewashing for decades.
Exactly. The Oscars are nothing more than rich white people patting other rich white people on the back.
It’s infuriating. I haven’t seen JoJo yet but she was not good in Marriage Story. The rest of the cast acted circles around her.
I thought she was really great in Marriage Story, as was Adam Driver
I thought she was incredible in Marriage Story. The fight scene was epic.
Tough year for actresses – so many good performances. Honestly, I would cut Renee or Charlize first. Awkwafina got robbed.
Lupita was excellent but they never nominate horror. Toni Collette also got snubbed for an incredible horror role (in the past). See also Florence this year for Midsommar. Little Women is some of Florence’s least impressive acting work (she is still excellent – she is an amazing actress) and she got nominated for it.
I always find it amazing that a film can be nominated for Best Picture but not Best Director. How does that work? Taika (was autocorrected to Tails!) Greta and Noah were all unfairly snubbed.
The Irishman and 1917 reflect all the very old, white men in the Academy. Neither deserves a Best Picture or Best Director nod. Only Pesci should have been nominated for The Irishman.
Knives Out should have been nominated (brilliant film). The Farewell too. Possibly Portrait of a Lady on Fire.
I’m not on the J-Lo train. I think her best performance was Out Of Sight and she’s been increasingly worse in everything ever since. She is a terrible comedic actress. Hustlers was a return to earlier form, and she was fun and strong in it; but not Oscar-worthy for me and her larger body of work certainly doesn’t prop her up. I think it was the Asian actresses (and actors) who really got snubbed in her category. Parasite had several actors who should potentially have been nominated, and Shuzhen Zhao from The Farewell.
Margot Robbie is an excellent actress and was really good in Bombshell. She is not a mediocre blonde.
Overall, there need to be more diverse movies AND a lot if old white men need to move on from this world before there will be true diversity in the Oscar noms.
I hope Parasite wins best film and director.
@SKF – I agree with most of your points except:
1. 1917, in my opinion, was a fantastic film with incredible cinematography and emotional impact. It absolutely deserves a Best Pic nom.
2. Knives Out was a very enjoyable whodunnit and entertaining all the way though, but not “Oscar worthy” or whatever. It’s a fun flick not a great movie.
Yeah, I agree too. I thought she was darn good in Marriage Story and deserves the Oscar nod. I havent seen Jojo yet. She seems to be an inconsistent actress To me – sometimes she is amazing as in Marriage Story and sometimes she phones it in – any Marvel movie.
@ChillyWilly – I’m glad I’m not the only person to think that her acting in Marriage Story wasn’t that great.
Some moments were really good, but in much of the film, I could tell that she was acting. I’m not saying that she was terrible. But Oscar-worthy? No.
Blah. I actually think she’s a decent actress in general (haven’t seen either movie yet) but I really just don’t like her.
I normally would agree, but I really thought she was fantastic in Jojo Rabbit. Really, shockingly good. She was fine in marriage story too, but nothing special.
lol.
The Oscars are meaningless and I’m infuriated because the film I like didn’t get nominated.
Seriously, this is a joke.
Lupita was AMAZING in US. Her physicality, her voice… That’s not easy to do. One reviewer said “she moves like a robot who’s also a ballet dancer”. How you achieve that with your body, while at the same time expressing such complex emotions and telling a story… I have no idea. Not every actor can do that.
And maybe Scarlett is good in MS… But yeah, A LOT of actors can do THAT.
It’s not often that non white actresses get roles like that. And a dual role ! Again, how many actresses can do that?
But I guess they only reward POC when they play a) slaves b) racial movie trope c) a and b
I liked JoJo Rabbit but I didn’t think she was outstanding in it. I’m really surprised she was recognized for that role.
Also mad about the lack of JLo, Taika Waititi and Ari Aster.
EDIT: Oh, Jojo Rabbit did get a Best Picture nod. No directing, though.
Taika 100% deserved a Best Director nom
He’s gonna get it eventually. He’s a rising star there, working on so many projects. They just want a more “serious” film from him or totally bonkers one. He’s been my fave for years and i’m enjoying watching him get the studio money for films he actually wants to make. Since he can already do all that, I doubt it hurts him not getting a nom for directing yet.
Coming here to say this. And lemonylips, I agree. His time is coming. Get that money, Taika!!
I am happy as hell that Jlo is not nominated, she is really mediocre actress and Hustlers is really a bad movie,
It’s not like I was expecting it, but I really wish they had nominated at least 1 actor from Parasite for an acting category. Anyone would do. The performances in that movie were amazing and better than any other American movie I saw this year.
Also, category fraud: How the f*ck is Leo lead and Brad supporting? I’m actually willing to beat Brad had more screentime than him.
It’s Brad’s best chance to win, so he put himself up in that category. Leo didn’t want to split the vote, so they put Leo in lead. This decision is made by the producers of the movie that are submitting all of this for consideration.
I think because of his Leading Man status and being “Brad Pitt” it seems that way, but his role in this particular film really was a supporting one. Leo definitely was the lead with the bigger, meatier role and more screen time. It can be such a fine line, that’s for sure.
I agree, sm.
The Pitt role does very much read “supporting” to me, in Oscar terms, so no surprise there. What does surprise me? I have always found Pitt a non-actor, flat, wooden, and too smarmy to be in any way attractive, either. Just…not a fan, never have been. But I have to say that in “Hollywood” for the first time in my life I honestly feel he was acting. He somehow fell into this role, no ticks, jerks, grunts, strains or “simian stare” as an Interview with a Vampire critic once put it, beautifully. I thought he was balls-out magic in the movie and I’m ok with the nom on the basis that he seemed for once be doing his job.
Also surprised that I didn’t hate Leo in the movie, either. ALSO not a fan of that guy, but he won me over, too. Of course, I loved the movie, but then I love Inglourious Basterds *despite* Pitt.
Anyway, that’s my weird Brad/Leo flex.
#OscarsSoBoring
Agreed. First thing I thought is how boring and antiquated the Oscars are.
WORD.
I also think with there being so many more awards shows leading up to the Oscar nominations that it takes away from any surprises (the majority of the time, anyway) and it’s just so predictable now. By the time the Oscars actually take place all of the winners are pretty much already determined, which just adds to the boredom.
Always always.
Was talking to my husband about somebody’s performance not being “Oscar caliber” and we both followed up with “whatever that means.”
I really wanted to see Eddie Murphy’s name. Oh well.
I also thought Eddie Murphy was awesome, I think he should have received a nomination.
Adam was the best part of a marriage story.
me too! damn; I only watched the GG hoping he would get some love…well, at least he was nominated there
I’ve been snowed in and recently watched every Shrek movie on Netflix. I seriously want Eddie Murphy to get a lifetime achievement award for his Donkey role alone. He was so awesome in it, I’m not even kidding. I will see his new movie based on Shrek!
I cant believe someone could win a GG for a performance and then not even be nominated for an Oscar. I mean I know it has happened before, but seriously Oscars. Is Cynthia Erivo the only POC nominated for an acting award??
Yes Oscars are apparently 99,99% white again.
antonio banderas is nominated for best actor. but yeah, it’s always the same. not surprising but still disappointing.
also, too much joker! just in general. 11 nominations?!
Antonio Banderas is white. Cynthia Erivo is the only non white nominee in any of the acting categories.
@isla apologies, I didn’t mean to offend. but I will stand by my comment about too much joker. lol.
11 for joker? Ok I don’t watch superhero movies but I might want to watch that. Is it a lot different than the average cheesy/cliche hero movie ? Anyone?
@Miu
I watched it this weekend. It isn’t a super hero movie at all. You will cry. Joaquin Phoenix will win.
Miu,what FHMom said regarding Joker. One week ago when Phoenix won GG for best actor I commented on here that I like him but wouldn’t see Joker.
Eating my words and gladly so, I saw the trailer and decided to watch…its nothing like any super hero movie out there, because it’s not a comic/hero movie,it’s a beautifully creative piece that depicts the descent into despair and the cruelty of a society allowing the mentally ill,and other forgotten ones slip through the cracks.
I was mesmerized by the cinematography and the score, and Phoenix was mesmerizing as what he did wasn’t merely acting but a true performance of a lifetime.
banderas deserves it. his acting was so subtle and deep. but he has no chance. phoenix’s role is much flashier. both are amazing. I just wish people recognized emotional work banderas excelled in.
I watched The Joker ONLY because my BIL got a screener; it’s not something I’d pay to see. It is a *very* disturbing film, and I felt very disquieted/anxious watching it… but Joaquim’s performance… outstanding. Truly, outstanding. I rally do think he deserves the awards. His performance makes you recoil and yet, you feel such despair for him at the same time. He really was amazing in this role.
Wow, this….this is embarrassing.
My thoughts too.
This is just embarrassing.
If it weren’t actually real you’d have to presume this is satire. No Lupita? No Awkwafina? No Eddie Murphy?
How can you be mad about JLO not being nominated ??? I could barely get through the movie, let alone watch JLO. Her acting was so mediocre.
I am happy as hell that Jlo is not nominated, she is really mediocre actress and Hustlers is really a bad movie,
But ScarJo and Margot Robbie gave scorching performances that deserved Oscar noms over J.Lo. I think tf NOT.
JLo is just soooooo self aware. Which is a good asset when you are on stage doing a dance or making a video. When it comes to acting, her self awareness comes across as insincere to me. She poses in movies as much as videos.
Pissed about Awkwafina and Jennifer Lopez. I didn’t like “Hustlers”,. but I thought Jennifer was really good.
My disdain for this whole publicity stunt that is the Oscars is on record. But WOW. These nominations are particularly embarrassing this year. Really, even now people are going to go on treating this seriously and lending it “importance”?
“ Scarlett Johansson is the only Asian actress Hollywood recognized”
Twice! Two nominations. But the Internet and these comment sections told me she was cancelled? 😂 Welcome to the real Hollywood kids!
Thanks, Mom, for the warm welcome!
Lots of people intensely dislike ScarJo, and consider her “canceled.” That doesn’t mean the Old White Men in the Academy agree (or care).
These are not the people’s choice awards. They are the old guard flexing. Believe.
These noms are a disgrace on the Academy. *IT* should be canceled!
So boring, so white, more of the same. Rewarding mediocrity over and over again. Yawn.
Has anyone seen 1917 yet? I really like war movies, especially the older wars (WWI, II, Korea, Vietnam et al), but I just want another human’s take on it before I go spend 2 plus hours in a theater.
1917 was excellent. Incredible cinematography and great acting. It definitely should be enjoyed in a cinema!
Loved it. I thought I was over all the world war movies going in, especially after Dunkirk was so amazing recently, but I thought it was very human and intimate. It mostly follows just two men on a mission and is shot in a couple of very long takes (or at least it’s edited to mimic that impression), so it feels very close and personal. I think it’s worth seeing in a theatre. That’s just my opinion though.
I enjoyed Dunkirk. Ok. I’ll give it a go! Thanks!
I just saw it this weekend and it deserves Oscar noms. I was shocked by how good this movie was. I cried, laughed and legit was on the edge of my seat so engrossed in the story.
I would totally encourage people to go see it.
It was really good. Just a good bit of visual story-telling.
I didn’t see Hustlers, but was J.Lo’s performance really that good? By the reviews I read about her I don’t understand the rage here.
It was okay. She’s done much better work before.
Meh. She was good, I wouldn’t be mad if she had been nominated, but I wouldn’t have given her the nomination.
I thought she played too much to type for a nomination. The academy would have sat up and would have rewarded her if she played an average suburban dowdy mom, not a diva like dancer.
For that film, she was the best part of it, and it’s probably the best work she’s done in a long time. In comparison with all the other movies and actors out there…I think she was always a long shot for a nomination.
Yeah…. My instant reaction is I’m just not going to watch this year. It would be a nice excuse to have a boozy Sunday, but there are going to be enough of those with the primary’s coming up. Congrats to the nominees though.
I would be excited for Parasite, but they’re probably just going to award Joker and 1917 instead. Roma managed to bring in Marina de Tavira while Parasite couldn’t pull in it’s actors, who deserved some recognition.
Some reporter is going ask Cynthia Erivo (and only her) about the lack of diversity in the nominees and her response is going to be an “All lives matters” – esque trainwreck. That will be my Oscars.
I highly recommend giving up watching. I was so into watching I used to have Oscar parties (ironically, because I knew enough about Oscar history to know its all bulls**t). But I gave it up several years ago. I watch the red carpet on mute while doing other things and catch up on clips of any big moments on twitter and YouTube. Much better!
I am cackling with laughter at how horrified the Oscar producers certainly are that neither Beyonce or Taylor Swift got best song nominations. Not because they think they deserved them, but because now neither woman has no reason to perform or even show up! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
I agree totally Mia4s. I use to have Oscar watch parties too and look forward to the fashion. But this is a TRAVESTY! I did not get to see many of these movies. Once Upon A Time in Hollywood was like watching paint dry for 2.50 hours (except last 2 minutes of it). Us. I am still not sure exactly what was happening (but I have a theory). LN was a revelation in acting. She was stunning and clearly deserved a nomination. I did see Little Women. I am bummed that Greta Gerwig did not get a Best Director nomination because it sounds like many the Irishmen wasn’t so great. LW was amaze balls! It made me realize exactly how bad movie making has become because it was so beautifully made, directed, acted, etc. Even my husband loved it! This will be the first year I can remember of not watching the Oscars.
primaries*. I woke up early for this sh*tshow.
I saw Judy last week and Renee Zellweger gave the most godawful performance I’ve ever seen from an A-list actress. She did not capture Judy Garland at all. I’ve seen all of Judy’s 40s and 50s musicals and I’m old enough to have seen her many, many tv appearances on talk shows and specials. Also knew about her sad life. Renee’s performance consisted of constantly pursing her lips and scrunching up her face, neither of which the real Judy did. The whole thing was a travesty. Awkwafina should’ve had that spot that Renee doesn’t deserve,
Renee has always scrunched her face. Remember Cold Mountain?
That doesn’t equate to good acting. Especially when she’s playing a real person who didn’t scrunch or purse her lips. She was simply playing her own worst mannerisms.
Thank you. I cannot believe she was nominated. She did her trademark scrunched up face pursed lips move and I was like WTF? Plus, if you can’t get the rights don’t think you can fake it. Judy Garland’s voice was magic. The whole movie was a snooze. I sincerely hope Cynthia Erivo wins because I am sick of all these actresses playing hos, victims, nuts, drunks.
I do want to point out that “Marriage Story” and “Little Women” both received nominations for Original and Adapted Screenplay which annoys the crap out of me. Yeah, neither one got Director nods, but they still get a chance to win an award all on their own.
I can’t stand either one of them and I hope Joker wins adapted. Along with “Knives Out” or even “1917” winning original. Neither of these fools deserve an award.
And yes, I did watch Marriage story… Adam Driver was the best part of the film, otherwise, eh.
Don’t even get my started on JLo not being nominated. I loved her in “Hustlers”.
Little Women was a lovely film, but I do think it’s odd to nominate or award source material that’s been around for ages and adapted so many times.
Except Greta Gerwig did something very inventive in her adaptation. She worked in a parallel story about Louisa May Alcott along with the usual Little Women narrative, which is revealed at the end in a very clever way. So she resolves the age-old conundrum about what to make of Jo marrying the Professor.
Also, she changes the usual perspective of Amy, who in this version is Jo’s equal — a woman hoping for a career in the arts but extremely practical about the realities of her time period and what is possible for women. Gerwig also presents the story in a way that Amy marrying Laurie has a foundation and doesn’t come out of the blue.
And, finally, the structure of the movie is quite interesting, moving forward and backward in time. So yeah, I do think Gerwig deserved a nomination in best adapted screenplay.
I say this from the perspective of being a writer myself, who, after watching this version, had a little movie marathon and watched all the previous versions, to see how they differed. Yes, I am a nerd that way.
@BellaBella I’ve seen four versions of LW-1933, 1949, 1994, and 2019 and enjoyed them all. All excellent, imo.
Yeah, I don’t get the Marriage Story hype either. It was an okay film, but I think we just don’t know what a grown up drama even looks like anymore to think that one was special. I don’t even think it was Baumbach’s best film. Agreed, Driver was the best part (as he usually is).
@tealily – Oh man… personally I LOVED Marriage Story. I thought it captured the brutal elements of divorce and custody issues so well. A good example of to each their own with taste though!
When it comes to streaming movies, especially ones never released in the theater, one of my markers for a good film is “can it hold my attention long enough that I don’t grab my phone?” Both Marriage Story and Dolomite is My Name did that. The only acting nomination I agree with is Adam Driver. ScarJo was out acted by him & Dern was just saying lines. There should have been at least three nominations for Dolomite- Murphy, Snipes, & possibly Da’Vine Joy Randolph.
@M.A.F., I *so* wanted Da’Vine Joy Randolph to be nominated. How awesome that would have been.
The “not knowing a grownup drama anymore” is insightful. I also think, now that audiences mostly ignore Woody Allen, HWood wants to re-up that style of moviemaking and is looking for a successor. The MS hype doesn’t surprise me at all.
(I will say I liked it more than I thought I would, but hardly the best thing made this year.)
Greta’s adaptation was brilliant. Well-deserved Nom. Marriage Story was also excellent. Knives Out is so clever, I’d root for them to win.
I’m so disappointed about Awkwafina, but J.Lo’s performance def did not deserve a nom. She was good, but honestly nothing spectacular.
I didn’t think J.Lo did anything special in Hustlers. She only got attention for it because it was a reminder that she can actually act. If an actress with a better track record had put in that performance no one would have considered it awards worthy.
Exactly. It’s like Gaga in A Star Is Born. Her performance looks more impressive than it was because you always expect pop stars to be terrible actresses, and JLo hasn’t done a lot of acting roles in a while.
That being said I would’ve gladly given JLo a nom over Scarlett’s second.
Great point.
i’m HEARTBROKEN about taron but separately….. who is THIS determined to get scarlett to the podium and why?? i can’t speak to her performance in jojo but next to laura dern and adam driver in marriage story i….. wasn’t terribly impressed? i feel like i’m hallucinating
I am also heartbroken about Taron not getting a nom. He was so fabulous.
The Academy seriously went ahead and nominated Todd Philips instead Greta Gerwig or Taika Waititi, I’m out.
Truly. I now only look at the list of nominees for foreign and technical stand outs.
Everything else is kind of a sign pointing in the direction of “Bibbyslaw, you won’t be into this movie about a dude and that movie about a dude and this other movie about ten dudes”.
(Pain and Glory excluded. I loved that movie.)
Let me get this straight; they nominated ScarJo TWICE but no nom for J.Lo. I called it a long time ago: this awards season run is GARBAGE.
I just keep thinking about how Winona Ryder’s career was sidelined for shoplifting, while Brad Pitt and his ilk just rise and rise…
Thank you for pointing that out!! It’s very unfair how Hollywood and society… Gives so much chances to White males!! Imagine If Angelina have done that, instead of Brad?? 😐
I do know what you mean, but WInona was actually convicted of a crime.
Of course, if a white man in Hollywood had done the same thing, he also would’ve just gotten a “boys will be boys” and kept right on with his career.
I’m just watching 13th so may be particularly sensitive to this right now, but even what we deem a crime is heavily laden w biases, e.g. why isn’t domestic abuse taken as seriously as shoplifting…?
There was also a fall-out between Winona and Goopy though. My guess is that Goopy was able to get her foot up and pushed down Winona when she could.
Lupita snubbed, it always happens with horror.
It sucks. Lupita was brilliant in Us.
It’s difficult enough for black women to get nominated without playing a slave or maid, but I really held out hope that they would notice this performance.
I wish she had been recognized as well. She played 2 wholly formed characters in that one film, and did it brilliantly.
Issa Rae when she announced the nominations for Best Director – that’s all I need.
Oh well, looks like there were only 6 films made in 2019 but ok, Oscars have been done for ages. I’m happy though I guessed that Banderas had an Oscar worthy role though am surprised he got the nom. Scar Jo though – how often does it happen that one actress is nominated in 2 categories? Alogether, a very bland year it seems.
I remember a big fuss was made when Jessica Lange was nominated for best actress (Frances) and supporting actress (Tootsie) in the same year. She won in the latter category and figured that her supporting win meant she wouldn’t cop the top award. She was right; that year Streep won for Sophie’s Choice. A few years later Sigourney Weaver was also nominated in both categories in the same year. She didn’t win in either category. Emma Thompson and Al Pacino has also been nominated for the two acting awards in the same year.
Also maybe Julianne Moore? (I could be misremembering.)
@BellaBella: Yep, Julianne too. But she did not win either category that year.
I juste love that Kathy Bates got a spot, and no prediction expert saw that one coming.
Sure her red carpet style will likely garner less interest than Jennifer Lopez’ . But sorry when it comes to acting chops, she’s in a higher league.
Mostly because the movie was terrible and no one saw it? I’m a Kathy fan and I’m happy for her (and I’m sure she’s great in it – she’s really talented) but I’m just not gonna see “Richard Jewell” by Clint Eastwood. Not even on a screener. Unfair, but the entire thing is unfair. As has been pointed out.
I still plan on throwing my yearly Oscar party, but damn – this year’s nominations are particularly uninspired.
They’re really trying to get that conservative old white guy audience back, aren’t they?
I hope it tanks the show for good.
Scarlett was guaranteed to get two nominations this year. Her role in Jojo Rabbit was seriously Oscar bait and honestly she was great in it.
How exactly is Tom Hanks a supporting actor when he’s playing Mr Rogers in a movie about Mr Rogers?
That’s my thought as well. But I haven’t seen the movie so…
I haven’t watched the movie but based on what I’ve read, the main character in the movie is Matthew Rhys’ character who is a reporter and how his life changed after interviewing Mr. Rogers.
Yeah this is confusing to me too. But I haven’t seen it yet. Who is the main actor then?
It’s a movie about a reporter writing a piece on Mr Rogers, not a Mr Rogers biopic. Matthew Rhys is the lead actor.
He’s definitely supporting, the story centered on the reporter and his family.
I’m sad that film didn’t get a Best Picture nomination, it was really interesting and well done. Matthew Rhys was great in it too.
The main character is the writer played by Matthew Rhys who is sent to interview Mr Rogers and ends up having his family saved by the experience. The best performance in the film is actually from Chris Cooper.
Lightpurple, Agreed. I was hoping Chris Cooper would get a supporting nod. Actually Matthew Rhys was so good too.
It’s based on the journalist who interviewed him.
I agree the actors in Parasite are really good, but nominations. I think most of the members dont really watch the movies and just vote those in the running already. I like Knives Out, but not nominated. I dont undertand why OUATH is that great, I mean it was entertaining but the story is weak, no plot at all. I think Sony spent a lot of money for their campaign, the did a lot of screenings and Q&As.
I remember Lena Waithe and Melina Moutsakis saying they had 3 screenings (for the Golden Globes) and nobody showed up, I guess it was the same for the Oscars.
Tarantino has way too much mojo compared to what he does. I don’t understand it.
There are way too many movies centering on war/violence being celebrated in general.
Also that pic of Brad Pitt in the golf cart is groooooss.
I just watched Jojo Rabbit last night. Taika is a genius or more likely a kid trapped in adult’s body. I highly recomend it. Too bad he is not getting recognition for directing/writing, as he managed in my opinion to walk that very narrow and very slippery road of making comedy about Holocaust/nazis/World War. Trust Taika to make you cry and laugh at the same time.
Can’t get past scarlett johansson being a double nominee and joker leading the noms. I’m so sad for Lupita, Awkwafina, Jlo and Zhao Shuzhen.
No Knives Out!? That was definitely one of the best movies of the year! Chris Evans’ sweater alone deserves a nomination more than that tree ScarJo.
Oh come on. JLo’s acting was very good for JLo. Solid. Was it Oscar worthy? Not at all. I wanted her tp be nominated too just for the fun of it.
I dislike ScarJo as a person too but let’s not be immature. She was brilliant in Marriage Story. Didnt watch Jojo yet.
Best actor category is the best choosen. Parasite deserves all the awards but prob only get Best Foreign Picture, bc god forbid the Academy admit great (better) movies are made outside the US-UK circuit. Ofc 1917 is nominated. I love Sam Mendes, but ofc a war movie by a white male is among the best of the year,as every year. *fart sounds* oscars so white nd male,no surprise
Agree with @JAS about horror always being snubbed. Lupita should have gotten nominated as Best Actress; and in best supporting Rebecca Ferguson and Kyliegh Curran, both in Doctor Sleep (There is a scene that Kyliegh does in the movie that is so crazy good.)
Comedy also gets downplayed—loved “Booksmart” which should have gotten original screenplay and some best supporting nods.
Don’t get me started about “The Irishman”—boring AF, and Leo is awful — that accent — in OUATIH (or whatever the acronym is) . Marriage Story is annoying—an “An Unmarried Woman” with Jill Clayburgh a much better story about divorce.
And Laura Dern is doing Renata “Lite”
in “Marriage Story.”
I truly enjoyed ‘Doctor Sleep’! I wish it had done better. And really, no Jordan Peele for Best Original Screenplay? Guess I’ll be watching ‘Hustlers’, ‘Us’ and ‘Knives Out’ and ‘Midsommar’ (again) on Oscar Night.
Alfre Woodard was phenomenal in Clemency. She should have been nominated for best actress and, I think, won. But no nomination is just ridiculous.
Few people saw Clemency but that’s no excuse as 1917 wasn’t even available in most theaters until 2020.
I wish fair-minded people in the industry would get together and invent another awards show without the baggage. Stop trying to fix this messy polluted system and start fresh.
I also feel for Awkwafina and The Farewell. I worried when she won the Golden Globe that it would be another Crazy Rich Asians situaton-early lower tier acknowledgement then ignored.
Voting members: Well, we can’t nominate Florence Pugh for Midsommer because we would get called out for completely ignoring Us in which Lupita Nyoug’o was flat out fantastic and should be nominated. But let’s give it to Florence instead for her go the bathroom and you miss her performance in Little Women instead. You know, so they won’t figure us out *wink*.
Exactly.
Florence’s role in Little Women was substantial enough, and I liked her work in the film, but compared to Lupita’s work in Us, there’s no question Lupita should have gotten the nomination.
I would have kept both of them and removed Scarlett, or Kathy Bates (love her, but that film sounded terrible).
Re: Kathy Bates, horrible film but strong performance and plenty of actors (coughwhitecoughcough) have gotten nominated and even won. People are bending over backwards on here saying that JLo should not have been nominated or that Hustlers, one of the more acclaimed films of 2019, was not that good. We see you.
That would assume they even gave a thought to US (which they probably didn’t).
RIGHT!!!! I have no interest in ‘little Women’ but Florence in ‘Midsommar’ really blew me away! And no Ari Aster?
Florence was a forceful presence in Little Women and inhabited the role of Amy like none before her. She was very strong and equal to Saoirse Ronan in every way. I’m glad she was nominated.
Two noms for ScarJo and none for Awkwafina. Okay then Oscars.
I’m really only going to watch for Adam Deiver as he’s one of my favorite actors, but I’m terrified that Joaquin is going to sweep everything for the Joker. Heath Ledger is the only Oscar winning Joker for me and the new movie was so blaaahhh. I don’t get how it’s getting all the love.
I’m pleasantly surprised by how fast Florence made it to the big league. Congratulations to her! Zac Barf and her are going to break up soon, crusty older dudes cannot handle their young partners doing better than them.
Charlize’s nomination was bit surprising imo, rest of them were already predicted. Woody Allen’s pet rat better not win anything if Hollywood wants to continue pretending they care about sexual assault victims.
I just said this on another post, Florence and Zach will be on the outs soon enough, as she rises to fame.
Oohhh
At least J.Lo was not nominated. There is some hope. I loved the two popes.
This is infuriating!!
Oscars voters: Do better!!!
And oh I just saw Frozen II was not nominated! I’m surprised by that. I personally didnt care for it but I figured it would at least get nominated for best animated film.
I’ve always enjoyed J.Lo as an actress, but she wasn’t Oscar-worthy in Hustlers. I didn’t think anything about Rocketman was particularly Oscar-worthy either — a very standard biopic just like Bohemian Rhapsody — so I’m glad we’re not going down that ridiculous road again.
Lupita should’ve been nominated for Us, and Jordan Peele should’ve been for Best Director. Taika Watiti should’ve been nominated for Best Director, too.
Scarlett being nominated TWICE is absurd. I’m sorry. I’ve never seen what people see in her talent-wise. Adam Driver acted circles around her. Speaking of — I’m THRILLED (and not surprised obviously) that Adam Driver was nominated, but I fear it’s Joaquin’s year. I haven’t seen Joker yet and I’m sure he was great in it, but man…Adam was so great in Marriage Story. A jerk when he needed to be and lovable when he needed to be. He’s so freaking good at playing different sides of a person. And I just like the dude so much. But I think he’s only picking up smaller awards this year, not the big ones.
I love Adam Driver. Four films this year and I’ve seen all of them except The Dead Don’t Die, but Redbox has it, so this weekend, yeah. He is always compelling in everything I’ve seen.
I watched The Dead Don’t Die on a plane ride and enjoyed it. It’s obviously weird and not Jarmusch’s best (one of my FAVORITE movies is Only Lovers Left Alive), but I thought it was fun and Adam was really funny in it.
I enjoy Jarmusch’s films and love that he’s been able to keep making his oddball, little seen movies for 40 or so years.
He was so charming in The Dead Don’t Die! That film is such a pleasure.
Adam Driver was superb in Marriage Story. Just excellent. Honestly, I thought Scarlett was pretty fantastic too. Without giving away details, the scene where they’re fighting in the house and then the one at the end when Adam gets choked up reading “the things about my husband that I love” essay ScarJo wrote at the beginning and she’s listening/sobbing from the doorway… Whew Lawd, goosebumps!
Ford vs Ferrari is really good.
And Taron Egerton would have deserved a nomination for Rocketman. It was a harder role than Pitt’s, for example (who I do think was good). DiCaprio was really good.
I am super p*ssed off that Taron Egerton did not get a best actor nom for Rocketman. He was amazing.
I agree so much!!! He was phenomenal.
On a positive note, the Obama’s documentary was nominated in Best Documentary. Good for them.
Why was Laura Dern nominated for Marriage Story?? I don’t really understand it, she basically played her BLL character.
Yeah, I mean she was fine, but that’s a boring as sh-t nomination.
And she’s probably going to win!!!
Ok, I’m pleased about Banderas, and… no that’s it, too much ScarJo overall. Hope she goes home empty handed.
But boring movies overall, they need to nominate more international productions in more categories, not just focus on studio backed American stuff.
I can’t believe that Beyonce was not on the list & thought the timing might have been off. How on earth can she not get a nom if she was up??? Yeah, none of this interests me & I won’t be watching this year. Go Adam Driver, and to the rest, meh……
The Lupita snub, I get.
J-Lo? Its basically the same part she has been ‘playing’ her entire music career, I dont get why so many people are pretending her performance was ‘amazing’.
I am fuming about Jennifer Lopez.
The Oscars nominate the same people and the same “prestige” movies every year. It’s boring and I didn’t watch any of those movies. The Oscars are marching towards irrelevance. The people who make the nominations are so obviously out of touch.
I want Parasite to win every award it is nominated for. Period. #BongHive Also ScarJo in A Marriage Story was not worthy of a nomination. Lupita or Awkwafina should have gotten that spot.
One of them should’ve gotten Renee Z’s spot. She was awful in Judy. The whole movie stank.
#oscarsowhite
I’m so bored. Every year they basically tell us which films are going to get noms before they even hit the cinemas and then it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Yawn.
Exactly
The HW hand that washes the hand. So predictable.
By the way I despise Pitt.
Seems to be a very weak year film wise. Usually this time of year there’s loads of good films out with being award season, but nothing here looks particularly interesting. It seems to be the same ol people who get nominations just for breathing.
This is a total snoozefest of a list. I think I’ll be skipping this year just to avoid seeing so many smug establishment faces.
I saw Joker two nights ago for the first time and I don’t understand why everyone thinks it’s great??? Joaquin was good but they hardly gave him anything to do except show off how thin he was and dance around. He hardly had any lines, in fact their was so little dialogue I almost fell asleep. And there was such shoddy editing I thought the movie was ending multiple times. Has everyone there lost the ability to judge what a good movie is? Ridiculous.
I’ll get off my soapbox in a minute but it’s also worth noting how many of the films nominated look to the past. This is all so boomer types can rub their nips at the thought of former glories. It’s regressive, conservative, and it stinks.
@chimney
+10000000000
This is so bleach I’m not even wasting my time watching.
do ppl really think Hustlers was that good? I just saw it recently and was not impressed. Except for occasional strip club scenes it was snooze-y. Dialogue wasn’t great. JLo’s body is banging but the movie… *shrug*
I was so hyped to see it based on Lainey Gossip and her crew going nuts over it and I thought it was awful.
Poor JLo!! 😆 She was so sure that, she was going to receive an Oscar nomination!! I cannot stop laughting!! 😂
Joiquim Phoinix will win best Actor, Rennee Zelwiger for Judy best actress, Pugh will win best supporting actress and brad pitt best supporting actor
Am I the only one that doesn’t think Little Women deserved to be nom’d? There are more deserving titles for best picture, but I’m not surprised
Honestly, I think the Academy lovesNoah Baumbach&Greta Gerwig. They’re thrilled they can go SEE SEE THERES A WOMAN WE NOMINATE! the Academy quietly pleased that she’s blonde, ***white***; ‘vetted’ byAcademy fav Baumbach. Oh and good luck finding any PoC in Gerwig or Baumbach’s films…seriously its consistently 100% white cast/characters. The Academy’s OG love, all white everything!
I get mad when I think of all the WoC who work so hard to write direct and don’t get to fast track to a financed/distributed/famous cast – by being the muse of an already established filmmaker like GG is to to NB
So many more deserving titles, not surprised tho. Ok now I need my coffee ☕️
No, you are not. I’m actually offended by it. I’m insulted. I cannot BELIEVE that one got a nomination. It’s a middling-quality film of a story that has been done over and over in the past.
I’m a huge fan of the book. Huge fan of the Alcott books. I read them over and over as a kid, immersing myself in the stories. But this movie did NOT deserve an Oscar nomination. At all.
Why is Tom Hanks under best SUPPORTING actor when he plays the lead character?
The lead character is the reporter, played by Matthew Rhys. It’s based on a true story-doubting reporter expects to find Mr. Rogers’ flaws, meets, interviews, gets to know him, becomes a believer. It’s the reporter’s story of his journey.
LITTLE WOMEN?!!! Are you freaking kidding me?! Little freaking Women?
I’m out. Nope. Donezo.
That…is just. No.
Okay, and one more thing: Charlize did a great job in Bombshell. She did. I’m not trying to diminish it; I swear. But she didn’t do any better than Nicole. Her makeup artist is the reason Charlize is getting nominated for this performance. Her performance is great, but the reason she’s been elevated to Oscar nomination is because the prosthetic eyelids her makeup people created for her made the transformation. Nominate them. They deserve it. Theron’s portrayal was good but not perfect. It was a reasonable mimic of Kelly, but the makeup–THAT deserves the freaking Oscar.
So white as usual then.
Just wondering tho are lovebirds BP and JA gonna show up together? Or was those lies they were peddling just a setup for his lame jokes at the GGs? Lol.
I can’t believe that Jennifer Lopez isn’t even nominated. She was an absolute force on screen in Hustlers from start to finish.
I saw both Marriage Story and Little Women yesterday (I know, get a life). I can’t believe that Florence Pugh seemingly took J.Lo’s place. LW was fine and so was Florence, but the role wasn’t Oscar-worthy, IMO. I like Laura Dern and I suppose I can live with the fact that she’s basically got this category on lock now that J. Lo isn’t in the mix. Dern is good in Marriage Story and she looks great, but she’s basically just playing Laura Dern with two or three sassy/thought-provoking monologues thrown in for good measure. It’s a good performance, but I think the nomination (not a win) should have been her reward.
I’m rooting for Parasite, Joker, Bong Joon Ho and Joaquin Phoenix. Both films were exceptional. The lack of nominations for any of the cast members in Parasite is pretty poor.
Boohoo for Greta not being nominated for best director? Hilarious. Greta Has made TWO features now. Both of them have gotten award season campaigns & both got oscar nods among other award nominations. Did she ever have to hustle for financing? Fight to get even a sliver budget? worry about not having a single famous face in her debut in her project meaning it wouldn’t be marketed, AND a first time feature award push (!!) while tons of women of color in the past years as well as all of history haven’t gotten a single bit of that? Has made to features now. Both of them have gotten Oscar nominations among other award nominations. Did she ever have to hustle for financing, worry about not having a single famous face and her project meaning it. Pls, cry me river.
Greta will be fine. I think about Lulu Wang, Ava Duvernay, Karyn Kusama…Queen & Slims Director a first time feature black female filmmaker (I can’t spell to save my life M’s last name) But no the blonde white lady that was the established, beloved by the Academy’s muse, , so sad she wasn’t nominated for best director! sorry but I respect many more other female filmmakers that haven’t had a fraction after working decades for what this girl has, and fight me on it: if she had never met NB, none of this would’ve happened so fast. So disappointed. The Academy is thrilled tho they have a go-to white female to nominate consistently since they’ve always been bad at that smh
I’m not surprised by Gerwig not being nominated. My three favourite films last year were all directed by women: You Were Never Really Here, Leave No Trace and The Rider. None got nominated. I’m fairly underwhelmed by this though I really enjoyed Little Women – Saoirse great as usual – and Once…Hollywood. Lupita should have been nominated.
I have seen only three of the nominated films: Once Upon a Time, Ford v Ferrari, and this past weekend 1917. I would have liked to see Jojo Rabbit. 1917 was a good film, but I have no particular favorites this time around.
My sentimental heart wanted Endgame to get a nod, but it only got on technical nomination.
Oh well.
They blew it on the nominations this year. Ratings will be in the sub-basement this time around.
I managed not to watch a single one of those movies.
Is everyone just over the awards now? I used to be a red carpet junkie who couldn’t look away from the live shows but now I’m almost indifferent. I didn’t even watch the Golden Globes. I feel like the news is much more relevant and moving.
Here’s hoping Parasite wins because it is leagues ahead of anything Hollywood has produced in the last year (and longer).
