Joe Alwyn turned 29 years old last Friday. Taylor Swift turned 30 last December, just FYI. They’re very close in age, but she’s made a big deal (lyrically) about how he’s younger than her. She’s always dated younger guys though, so whatever. Anyway, Taylor was in London to help Joe celebrate, and she took him out to a London hotspot with some friends on Friday night. They got champagne service and Joe must have opened up his birthday presents at the table. So what do you get for the man dating Taylor Swift? A… dictionary?!?
What better way to celebrate your London boy’s birthday than in his hometown with famous friends? Such was the case for Taylor Swift and her famous boyfriend Joe Alwyn on Friday night. In honor of the Harriet actor’s 29th birthday, he and the songstress headed out to dinner at luxurious London hot spot Bob Bob Ricard, according to an eyewitness. However, the famous lovebirds were not alone. Per the source, Ed Sheeran, Cherry Seaborn and other friends joined them at a table of six for dinner.
Of course, a birthday calls for some toasting.
“They had fun drinking champagne at the table by pushing a button that says ‘Press for Champagne’ and having it immediately dispensed,” the eyewitness said. “They were there for several hours enjoying the night.”
During the gathering, the group also stayed entertained by drawing at the table and playing a game. The singer’s bodyguard carried a stack of books from the dinner table that included Oxford English Dictionary and A Month in the Country, the eyewitness noted.
A Month in the Country is an old book (published in 1980) about post-World War I England. I feel like that’s a rather pointed choice – perhaps Joe would like to adapt that book to the screen, or perhaps just star in it. As for the dictionary… I was thinking about it, and I think I would actually be kind of happy if my friends gave me a new dictionary for my birthday? I also feel like Joe and Taylor are probably Scrabble players, and they needed the newest edition of the Oxford English Dictionary as the definitive arbitrator of which words are and are not allowed. They seem like the types to get into Scrabble fights, don’t they? Still, I hope Joe got something other than books for his birthday!

She’s dated guys older than her…. John Mayer, Jake Gylenhaal, Tom Hiddleston…. I don’t think she has a type as far as age. I DO think she likes British guys though!
I’d like a dictionary for my birthday (heck, I’d be so happy with only books as gifts), but I’m a word nerd. Also, champagne all night sounds fun! I was wondering if they were still together because I didn’t see or hear about their relationship for a while, but then I saw some clips from a recent awards show. I wish them well!
After watching Taylor’s Netflix’s special I definitely understand her thought process more.
I’d kill for the Oxford English. That’s got better “fall down the rabbit hole” potential that Wikipedia.
The OED is amazing. If that really was a birthday present, he’s a lucky guy!
Is there an abridged OED? We had one when I was a kid and it was volumes, not something that could be easily carried around.
I don’t think there’s an abridged one, but I have a 2-volume set that’s the whole thing in super tiny font. Comes with a magnifying glass, lol.
Oh! Just double-checked and there is a “compact” edition of just one volume now. Tell Santa!
Good to know, I kind of miss having it, so I might look into getting the compact version.
Thanks @Venus!
Oh, me, too!! I also love Fowler’s Modern English for shorter dives into the rabbit hole.
I just looked at Fowler’s Modern English on Amazon and the blurb gives an example of an American vs. English use of a phrase I just had an issue with in a crossword puzzle (I thought the puzzle was wrong, but forgot about it before I could look up if it was wrong or if I was–apparently the puzzle used the English version of the phrase).
It could be a coincidence, but I’m choosing to believe it’s fate telling me to order the book and so I did 🙂
@BeanieBean, thanks for the tip!
They made a movie of that book way back in 1987 but it could be time for a remake.
This guy was supposed to be a big breakout star in that Ang Lee movie “Billy Lynn’s Halftime Walk” but it went nowhere. He’s also in “The Favourite” but frankly not very memorable. I find him very blah but that’s maybe what attracts her to him.
I liked him in “The Favourite.” I find him to be a solid actor.
He’s doing mostly Oscar bait period dramas, so he isn’t really popular for ordinary people. I honestly don’t see him in any type of big blockbuster, he is blunt for it. But in period movies and indie dramas he’ll be fine.
He did a good job in ‘Harriet’ as well.
I was at the same venue a few weeks back. That ‘press for champagne’ button is fun but lethal.
That button has been responsible for some of my most brutal hangovers but also some of my finest nights. Go figure!
I cannot believe that I have something go in common with these two! I asked for a dictionary for my bday this month!
Taylor is a huge Scrabble player, so that’s probably it!
Maybe they were using the dictionary for the game? I keep an OED in my scrabble board box & it has seen many pubs….no bodyguard to take it away at the end, though.
I am continually amazed how Taylor and Joe look so much alike. It’s…weird, no?
I can’t not see it either. It’s not just a passing ressemblance but some of their features very similar (mouth shape, structure, nose, eye shape).
I would love a dictionary as a present!
I saw a (pap) picture and it was actually a dictionary of American English which I think is a rather funny/witty gift for the English boyfriend of an American girl!
