Terry Crews: ‘Defeating White supremacy without White people creates Black supremacy’

NBCUniversal Winter Press Tour 2020

For years, people have defended Terry Crews and tried to say that some of more bizarre statements are just misunderstandings. Then last year he decided to throw Gabrielle Union under the bus and it felt like all bets were off. Union and Crews both worked on America’s Got Talent. Only Union was let go last year after she complained about racism on set and the overwhelmingly hostile work environment at AGT. Crews threw her all the way under the bus and defended his white employers. That was the beginning of the end of “people giving Terry Crews the benefit of the doubt.” And here is the actual end:

“Defeating White supremacy without White people creates Black supremacy…” First of all, yeesh, where to even start. Okay, I’ll start here: literally no one is saying “we have to make all of these changes to society without white people’s involvement.” Every protest in every state in America includes black, white and brown people marching for racial equality. White allies are truly helping, and polling indicates that white people have gone through a JOURNEY over the past month and there is a historic awareness of and agreement with Black Lives Matter. Second of all, Black supremacy isn’t a thing. Even if we get radical changes in policing and racial justice, Black supremacy still won’t be a thing.

Third of all, this reminds me so much of the anti-Time’s Up/Me Too arguments of “but what if women get more power?!?!” Put more black people and women in charge. Put black women in charge of everything.

Crews was responding to some people who were like “WTF” about that tweet, and then he dropped this:

I’m not… I just… I don’t think people cancelling Terry Crews are Black Supremacists. I don’t think that’s the terminology and I don’t think that’s a thing.

    No, just no..

    • I am Mimi says:

It pains me, but Terry Crews is canceled. Between this and how he treated Gabrielle Union, I’m done.

  2. Michael says:

Clown shoes Terry. I would cancel except I never followed him in the first place.

  3. BlueSky says:

My father didn’t march in the 60s for black supremacy so I don’t know WTF he’s taking about. I don’t hear anyone talking about oppressing white people. Is he making excuses for not saying or doing shit during this time?? Once he threw Gabrielle under the bus I unfollowed him so I have no idea if he’s made any statements about George Floyd or the protests. As a black woman Ive been done with him. Keep tap dancing for those AGT checks, Terry. I hope its worth your soul.

  4. Joanna says:

    Oh nos!

  5. TIFFANY says:

*Obama what the hell you talking about gif*

  6. Lala11_7 says:

Terry is an agitator highlighting the fears of racist Whyte people to maintain the putrid power infrastructure

    • Dragon Wise says:

This. We have to accept that this is who Terry is. He’s shuckin’ and jivin’, period.

    • waitwhat says:

I’m white and that’s how I read it. With all we have to be bothered about these days, Terry doesn’t set me off the way say, Derek Chauvin did. Some may accuse me of a false equivalency, but I’m tired of the outrage over every.damn.thing when there are serious life and death matters on the table.

    • bosandi says:

Wow you hit the nail on the damn head with that one!

  7. Margles says:

It’s bizarre that he seems to think that there must be a “supreme race”. As if removing white supremacy a priori creates a void that must be filled with a new group.

  8. Nikki says:

I have never heard anyone ask for black supremacy in my life. It was never “Black Lives Matter More”. Why won’t he shut up?

I could have sworn we cancelled him. I’m starting to think these cancellations don’t take.

  9. S808 says:

Black Supremacy is not even possible so I don’t know what he’s talking about.

  10. Ali says:

    What is he talking about?

Why cant he be quiet like Kanye?

  11. SINGINGTABLOIDSTAR says:

Put black women in charge of everything! I agree. Black people are the tastemakers of the culture, from language to music to fashion.

Men have had their chance at running the world, which is why it sucks so bad. They really need to stop fumbling the bag and give it up. Women are the creators of life—-we are way more valuable than they will ever be. It’s time to reflect that in leadership.

    • emmy says:

You know, as a white woman I would actually like to see that. I would rather have women in charge of everything (screw equality, it’s our turn) than whatever this sh*t is that we are stuck in.

Also, Terry seems to want to preserve whatever status he has in his industry and stepping on black women or fellow black people is okay with him. Reminds me of white women anti-feminists. Whatever. The rest of us is moving forward.

  12. Scal says:

That’s what racists who fight against BLM think. What men who fight against feminism think. It’s how bigots operate. It can’t just be about equality. POC and women must want REVENGE. They want to oppress us like we have oppressed them! Sigh.

It says ALOT to me about how Terry Crews views the world. It’s a bummer as I like brooklyn 99, but he’s done.

    • waitwhat says:

But I think that was his point…to call out the racist way of thinking? Maybe I’m giving him more credit than he deserves. Maybe it’s like art – a statement open to the readers’ interpretation?

      • Scal says:

I wish I could be that generous with the reading. If you read his follow ups to black celebs that were calling him out-he doubled down on it several times.

      • waitwhat says:

Ah, okay. I didn’t follow it beyond the initial read. Thanks for this additional information.

  13. whateveryousay says:

I need him to say less things. Clown.

  14. ABritGuest says:

    What an idiot

    • Who ARE These People? says:

Yes, this is just so stupid. Doesn’t understand much about power structures, does he.

  15. McMom says:

What? That doesn’t even make any sense – I can’t argue with it because I can’t follow it. What an odd thing to say.

  16. Plaidsheets says:

He should really stop talking. Why does he keep talking? Stop talking.

    • BlueSky says:

This is his pattern. He will say something dumb and tone def 2) double down on what he says and makes things worse and 3) come back with some weak ass apology after being dragged by his wife or mother.

      • osito says:

This is the exact pattern. He needs serious help at this point. I listened to his Maron interview when it came out and thought that his positions on race were a lot like his perspective on his role within his family, and even like his role as a #metoo advocate — very centered on his own experience and *only* that experience governing his thought processes. He would have *never* become so vocal about the need to support victims of sexual assault had he not become one. How he doesn’t *also* view that incident as a racist one, and evidence of racist systems that need to be destroyed stumps the hell out of me. I don’t know if this is some sort of internalized buffer to being perceived as a large, angry black man or what, but what he is doing is actively harmful. He’s giving a very vocal platform to one of the more unhinged *white* extremist fears, and it will be used as a justification for hurting black people and other PoC.

  17. Oatmeal says:

    When will some people learn

Shutting the F up is forever free

And yes, he is a trash panda

But more importantly he is just dumb as hell

  18. MellyMel says:

Black Supremacy is not a thing, nor will or should it be. And I’m one of those black ppl that called him out and I stand by it. If you don’t want us to call you those things, stop acting like them.

  19. Mel says:

Why can’t we have nice things??!! Couldn’t he just be Terry Jeffords and be quiet??!!
I really thought after his stepping all over Gabrielle Union his publicist would have given him a stern talking to…

  20. Bananas says:

Lol. If we ever get to the point in society where we are even remotely close to being in danger of the marginalised rising up collectively to such power were they are able to topple down and oppress the former suppressors into a new reign of supremacy, then that would mean we actually made progress into equality, no?

I also think statements like this are intended to take attention away from the real issue, just like ‘all lives matter’, ‘not all cops’, and ‘not all men’. It’s a lame response people use when they have nothing meaningful or intelligent to contribute, but want to be part of the conversation. I am always reminded of debating: Sick. To. The. Topic.

  21. R says:

Along with everything else, I wish the term ‘white supremacy’, would die. It’s white stupidity.

    • osito says:

I can’t tell if you’re trolling or not, but white supremacy is not just a “term.” It’s an actual political, economic, and social system that allows white people to dominate culture and resources in our society.

      • R says:

I absolutely am not trolling. Call it white stupidity, not white supremecy.

      • Pilot says:

@R I think you misunderstand the term, it is not meant as a description of ‘racial’ reality but a description of a belief system that due to its prevalence actually shaped society as a whole. To say it with Marx: ‘theory becomes a material force as soon as it has gripped the masses.’

The term white stupidity therefore would miss the point. Sure, the belief that white ppl are superior is wrong (not stupid, smart people are racist too and stupidity also implies that people just don’t know better which is massively wrong). But we need to be able to address the substance of the wrong idea (superiority) in order to explain why we live in a world in which white people have it on average so much easier.

    • CoffeeChamp says:

I get what you’re trying to say but that’s part of the problem. White supremacy is very real and should be acknowledged as such, not renamed to sound less tragic. Example: if you have mold in your home, calling it dirt only allows it to fester and become worse bc it was not properly acknowledged and treated accordingly.

  22. Liz version 700 says:

Wow. He repeatedly says on really stupid things

  23. Storminateacup says:

‘Black Supremacy’?!? WHEN was this ever possible 🙄? Wow just wow.

  24. Valiantly Varnished says:

We’re canceling you because you’re a coon, Terry, who threw a black woman under the bus for a paycheck . We’re canceling you because you’re a moron.

  25. Annabel says:

One thing all races have in common is that a certain percentage of their members are misogynists, I guess.

  26. CoffeeChamp says:

It appears that Terry has *Black Guilt* (insert jig dance here) and is playing both sides and has a history of doing so. His attempt to sound “rational” by defending the white American culture of oppression and victim blaming is reprehensible. We (black people) do in fact have allies in the white community and they are fighting beside us! His point is utter trash and he deserves every ounce of backlash he is getting. As a black women, I do not seek superior status, I seek equality.

  27. IntheKnow says:

This self hating loser is so fking gross.

  28. bosandi says:

I don’t know what to say about him. I’m all out of excuses. I wish society would stop looking to celebrities for their input on matters such as this. We, the black community, need real leaders – not entertainers. Their job is to entertain. Unfortunately, entertainers have the platform to spout nonsense like Crews is doing.

  29. SunshineG says:

I had to meditate on what he was saying and I think I totally get what he was trying to say but I wished he posited it with a qualifier…i.e I’m pro-black but …. it would have set the context up
