Nicole Richie was on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon Live last week, where she’s still promoting her Quibi show. Quibi is pretty much over. Except for the occasional thinkpiece about how it failed so spectacularly, no one is talking about it. I have heard very few people even say they’ve watched it, although one of you watched Nicole’s Quibi show and liked it. The last time we talked about Nicole she said she had just finished watching all the Sopranos. On Fallon she said she loves spending time with her kids and has been watching horror movies with them, but only during the day. I checked and they’re not even teenagers yet! Her daughter, Harlow, is 12 and her son, Sparrow, is 10. Here’s more of what she said:
On how she’s doing in lockdown
We’ve been here. Doing exactly what I’m told. We’ve been spending a lot of time together. We’ve had every emotion on the planet that you could possibly have over the past three months. We’ve had some really nice times and some low times. We’re doing it all together. It’s nice, it’s really the first time that all four of us have been living our lives together all the time.I actually really love my kids just being with me all the time. I love hanging out with them, this is a fun age. We watch a lot of horror movies together. We like to do it in the day.
On how she’s talking to her kids about BLM
My kids are older in the sense that they’re not toddlers, and they do have access to the world and they talk to their friends, their friends have older siblings. The biggest gift that you can give your kids is to be honest with them and to be truthful with them. They are capable of understanding what’s going on in the world. They are capable of empathy and showing compassion. These kids are passionate. They know what’s going on. They’re having little TikTok protests. They are excited and we want to keep their excitement and that momentum and them knowing and believing that they really can create change.

After that Nicole talked about how she got into trap music and rap, which is the background for her Quibi show Nikki Fre$h, where she raps about organic gardening and sustainability. She said her kids are mortified by her doing that, but that they do wear her merchandise. I really liked how she explained talking to her kids about Black Lives Matter and the protests, and how kids care and understand. The more I see this generation’s activism, the more hope I have.
As for letting her kids watch horror movies, I wonder which ones exactly. My son doesn’t like horror or scary movies, and at ten he wouldn’t want to watch them and I wouldn’t have asked him. All kids are different though and she may be watching just mildly scary stuff with them.

I liked her interview, liked very much about what she said of her kids and their understanding of the BLM movement, but what I really came away with was ‘damn, this woman GLOWS’. Her skin and hair are so beautiful. Wow.
You are so right, bobslaw – she’s just lovely. I came away with, “Wow! That wall behind her with the book shelves is almost identical to our lounge room wall!”
Holy crap I feel old now. Her kids are tweens? Wasn’t it just last year that she and Joel got together? Yikes, time flies. Sounds like they’re still enjoying the quieter life. Good for them.
Just want to say I’ve always had a soft spot for Nicole and it makes me happy her and Joel Madden are still together. They have a really cute little family. I love how enthusiastic she is about hanging out with her kids.
I think I started watching horror movies around 12 and probably should’ve waited longer. I was always intrigued by them so I watched a few with my dad, but then I literally couldn’t sleep at night. I’m still someone who really enjoys (some) horror movies, but I’m picky about them and typically watch them during the day.
I’ve been watching a lot of horror movies lately. I’m not sure why. I remember a few years ago there was a marathon of the movies Paranormal Activity. I watched them back to back to back. I didn’t sleep for weeks lol. Movies where you can’t see the “ghost/spirit” scare me the most. Those “house” sounds you hear at night…yikes !
Same! Those are the scariest to me. I don’t like horror movies much, but I do prefer the supernatural ones to the slasher/human attacker type.
Nicole really has grown up over the years and sounds like a good mom. She was very good on the short lived Good News, but I’m not interested in anything on Quibi.
I prefer the supernatural ones too. A personal favorite is The Haunting, original B/W version.
Her Quibi show was so so funny. I think a lot of the shows on this streaming platform are spot on- I’ve binged movies (through several episodes) and tons of cool shows, and the daily review of late night shows is good too. I wish CB would cover the Princess Bride remake on Quibi because as a fan of the original, its word for word amazing. PLUS you get to see a huge variety of actors ( and their families) recreate the scenes and sneak a peak of their homes and backyards during quarantine.
I have a ten year old and a thirteen year old, the thirteen year old is scared of everything and still doesn’t even want to watch Coraline, and the ten year old is a horror junkie already! We started with Poltergeist (which is mild and has low violence and no boobs) and have been adding in scarier stuff to see what she can handle/likes. The only thing that has really scared her is Nightmare on Elm Street and with that she wanted to know how much longer it was to see if she could handle it– which is exactly how I felt watching Heredity in the theater. I think it really depends on your kids.
I have a ten year old that started getting into horror this year. We started with monster films with tween/teen protagonists; Stranger Things, Attack the Block, Signs, etc. He’s handled them all well and wants to watch more.
My biggest struggle is finding scary movies without the sex and nudity, or excessive gore. I don’t mind cursing and drug references can be a good conversation starter, so some rated R is ok. But finding a good horror flick without nudity has been difficult.
I can’t stand gory horror, so I have some recs! The Ring is my favorite horror movie and to me, just a generally good movie (I actually think of it as a journalism film because its lead is a reporter, lol) — no sex or gore at all, and it leans more toward supernatural horror. If he likes alien-type movies, Alien or Cloverfield might be good.
I also think old scary movies are so much fun — movies like Night of the Living Dead and The Birds are so spooky without the crazy amounts of sex and gore we see in so many horror movies today.
