Ted “Zodiac Killer” Cruz has never been “alright” in any sense, but he seems to be especially stupid lately and I don’t really understand why. Is he just agitating and being stupid because of the election? Or is it something else. Anyway, fresh from his utterly manufactured “controversy” over the Goya CEO’s MAGA-ness (boycott Goya), Zodiac Killer Cruz decided to hop on an American Airlines commercial flight in the middle of a pandemic. Senator Cruz did not wear a mask. First of all, I can’t think of anything worse than sitting on a commercial airplane under normal conditions, but during a pandemic with an airborne pathogen? Nope. And to do so without a mask is not just stupid, it’s actually against every current flying policy:

I followed the thread – Cruz was on an hour-long flight from Houston to Dallas and while he had a cup of coffee, he remained utterly maskless in the airport and throughout the entire flight. Cruz’s office later claimed that Cruz merely had his mask off to enjoy his coffee, but as I said, other passengers say that Cruz remained maskless for the entire flight, and that he wasn’t wearing one in the terminal. American Airlines is now investigating/reviewing the matter. American Airlines was recently in the news for banning a (non-senator) passenger for refusing to wear a mask as well.
Sidenote question: if it was just an hour-long flight within the state of Texas, why not drive? I’m really asking. Surely there are good roads between Dallas and Houston and I can’t imagine driving that distance would be any more time-consuming than waiting at a terminal, flying and infecting hundreds of people with your maskless germs and viruses. Okay, so I looked up the distance… it’s a three-and-a-half hour drive, so I get that driving isn’t the most convenient thing. But if the aim is convenience through commercial flying, WEAR A MASK!

The arrogance of these a holes. He clearly has no respect for his fellow passengers and I blame the airline also for not enforcing their mask policy. Surprised no one on the flight called him out on it.
Oh and a 3 1/2 drive is nothing. By the time you get yourself to the airport, wait for your flight, drive to your destination after your flight, I guarantee he wouldn’t have been much longer driving.
Mythbusters actually did an episode where they tested flight vs. Drive. I dont remember the exact distance but it was somewhere around 450 miles. Under that, its actually faster to drive. Over that, fly. Not exact science and doesn’t consider all factors (like access to freeways or not) but it does give a general idea of considering distance when deciding which way to travel.
Not sure it was arrogance. Wouldn’t put it past Trump to ensure he got a prophylactic dose of the life saving serum from COVID-19 survivors. (His logic: it’s more important for HIM to be protected from a potential infection than to save the life of a dying person with an actual infection.) Further I can see him doling out access to the serum to loyalists, i.e. the complicit. So Cruz may have had nothing to fear at all…
I live in Houston and travel often for buissness to Dallas (often one day meetings). The flight is really easy, if you have the trusted traveler and status in one of the airline programs (I show up 30 min early for the Dallas flight, so basically walk straight on to the plane). Add that I can work/rest while I uber/fly – hate to side with Ted here, but I’d fly if I had to go – it lets me return the same day. (Virtual meetings for now!)

A commercial flight for which we probably paid if he set foot in one of his constituent offices at ether location. If so, he needs to reimburse us.

The flight attendants should have insisted he wear a mask- it’s to protect them and the other passengers! I hope he gets banned from the airline, but we all know that won’t happen.

I agree, I drive to DC and it’s 5 hours. I flew twice and I was like, wtf am I doing this for, imagine the plane crashes my last thought will be, you know, I could have easily driven this. A under 4 hour drive is nothing.
And right now with the pandemic? I’d drive pretty much anything except cross country or overseas. But I’m not going anywhere anytime soon.
I’m in NJ and drove to DC a few months before all this started – parked in Maryland and took the Metro in. So easy and cheap!
So what has been the punishment for all the “civilian” non-senators who were penalized for not wearing a mask? Does Cruz get the same penalties or does everybody else’s penalty get waived now? [Side note: of course I think they all suck for not wearing a mask and should all be banned from public flights.]

I live in Houston and I would 100% drive to Dallas, even with no pandemic! By the time you travel to and from the airports, it’s usually less time to just drive.
Yeah, that’s what I was thinking too: between going to the airport (usually not located close to your place), going through security, having to be at the gate about 60 min in advance, waiting for the plane to get to the gate, leaving the airport to get where you want to be… Yeah, it’s a huge waste of time!
Also, planes are terrible for the environment so it’d be much better to stop those short-distance rides when there are other options available
Fellow person that lives in TX. Between DFW and IAH airports-I would rather walk from Dallas to Houston than deal with either of those places. Bush airport is the wooooorrrrsssst.
I think it depends. If you’re on Southwest, it’s not that bad to fly from Hobby to Love. But he was on American, which means flying from Intercontinental (I will not call it Bush) to DFW, and those places are massive and out in the boonies. That’s too much of a hassle, like you said.
Just wanted to comment that we do the same thing with National Airport where I am from (DC-area). I have refused to call it Reagan my entire life and will continue to do so until my dying day.

Woe betide American Airlines if the anti-maskers they *did* punish were anyone except other white men. I mean, they mostly likely were white men, but still, the optics of it if it comes out that AA booted off a POC but allowed Ted to just go on his merry way……
DFW local here. It’s actually about 4 hours to drive from DAL > HOU. It’s a total PITA, through KKK country and into the h*llhole that is Houston traffic. I’ve driven it multiple times without incident. That said, if I had the opportunity to fly instead, I’d do it to save the drive time.
None of that absolves Cruz of his reckless behavior. He is THE WORST and seems to have become emboldened after he survived Beto’s challenge. I hope that AA bans him; there seems to be enough witnesses to confirm he didn’t wear a mask in the airport (I saw a photo of him sitting in the terminal, maskless, yesterday) or on the plane. F him.

I just got back from the ATL…I HAD TO GO.. I gave Naomi Campbell a RUN for her $$$…gloves…GOGGLES…face shield…face mask…rain poncho…THE WORKS…was it uncomfortable? Considering the alternative and considering that I will be taking public transportation to work so I will HAVE to dress like this ANYWAY…EVERYDAY?
No..it wasn’t uncomfortable at all…we’re in an airborne pandemic…and THAT is how you need to dress if you’re taking public transportation…Folks on the plane…including the attendants only had on face masks..with eyes and hands uncovered and that isn’t enough protection in closed environments and our government should be honest about that fact

He had COVID a while back, so maybe he thinks he is ok not to wear one? If so – he’s wrong. No one, not even big time Senators knows how this virus and the antibodies really work or how long everything lasts.

Austinite here. I think he did it intentionally, knowing it would get publicity. Total dog whistle to the Repub non mask wearing base. There are a lot of them in Texas. They don’t need the encouragement. Sigh…..
Certainly don’t know the whole story here from one photo snap. Most certainly can tell the article is written from an extremely bias standpoint. Also- if I’m drinking a coffee, the last thing I’m doing is putting on and off a mask. Get your facts straight before you put out a story.
