Gwyneth Paltrow is doing intermittent fasting *and* cleanses while in lockdown

The early days of Goop were somewhat fascinating because Gwyneth Paltrow was doing the bulk of the work herself, and it did have that personal touch. By “personal touch,” I mean that Gwyneth’s little quirks, lack of depth and her general credulity at pseudoscience became apparent repeatedly. It’s Gwyneth’s original sin, her interest in fad diets, pseudoscience and fake “healers.” Early Goop was a window into the real Gwyneth: the woman who spent the bulk of her time obsessing over fad diets, starving herself by way of “cleanses” and making up ailments that only wealthy white women suffer from. By her own descriptions, she did detox cleanses several times every month, and they were often just extreme versions of the biggest, dumbest fad diets. Guess what? She’s 47 years old and she’s still like that. She’s still obsessing over cleanses and whatever half-remembered diet her $1500-an-hour yogi told her about.

Gwyneth Paltrow has turned to intermittent fasting during lockdown. ‘Because I’m not traveling, it’s back to basics for the things that make me feel good: Ayurvedic eating for my dosha, intermittent fasting, and fresh, clean, nutrient-dense foods,’ she told GOOP.

The ancient health science of Ayurveda is built around the five elements of ether, air, fire, water, and earth. The unique combination of these elements come together to make up the doshas, or constitutions—vata, pitta, and kapha, according to the Kripalu Center For Yoga & Health. ‘I also gave myself a reset with Alejandro Junger’s CLEAN7. Pro tip: If you’re on a cleanse, take a date, split it in half, and spread almond butter on each side. If you’ve been cleansing, it tastes like a candy bar.’

Gwyneth has also been walking and doing yoga to keep fit. She said: ‘As far as workouts go, I’ve been streaming Bulldog Yoga, CorePower Yoga, The Class by Taryn Toomey, and Tracy Anderson, and I’ve been going for walks every day or every other day with Brad to get fresh air and a little sunshine.’

Along with looking after her physical health, Gwyneth has also been focusing on her mental health. She explained: ‘I’ve been exploring different breathing exercises to do, using apps like Headspace and The Breathing App, which I do for three minutes during the workday. It’s a short break that has a long-lasting impact. I’ve been trying to be more consistent about doing some wellness practices that work for me. I’ve made a commitment to start writing every day for five minutes because I’ve always been scared of journaling and don’t often write things down. It’s a daily micro mental challenge.’

“Ayurvedic eating for my dosha, intermittent fasting, and fresh, clean, nutrient-dense foods” and then “I also gave myself a reset with Alejandro Junger’s CLEAN7.” So many words for “I’m still starving myself, thanks for asking!” How many resets does she need every month? How often does she “fast”? I would be very curious to find out the reality of her disordered eating. As for everything else… God knows, she INVENTED yoga. She really does believe that. At some point, we do have to talk about how often Gwyneth appropriates from Hinduism and Indian culture too.

I can’t knock her for the intermittent fasting. that actually has good science behind it and Ive been doing it for over a year and love the results. Im not doing it for weight control, but it does sort of help with that. No 3pm slump, way way less belly bloating, more alertness, better blood sugar regulation, and a whole host of other stuff I can’t see at a cellular level. It’s really pretty easy and something more people should get into. there are many different versions of it, but I like the 16:8.

    • Jules says:

Agreed. Unfortunately she is interested in some legit stuff but when she talks about it it makes it seem less legitimate. Fasting not only has good science behind it, it’s been a huge part of spiritual practices forever.

    • janey says:

me too for IF. It’s working out great for my digestive system and overall being less obsessed by food and what to eat next. as for cleansing and ayurvedic stuff I don’t know enough about it but I have never and will never do a cleanse. I can’t see the point. I do meditate though and find taking time out of the day to sit up straight and breathe helpful.

    • Disco-Balled says:

Agree with you all on IF. So easy and don’t have to think about food three times a day. It also makes you enjoy your food more. Everything I eat tastes better when I break my fast. I love it also because it’s super flexible – you can do IF five or six days a week and still socialise with people for lunch and dinner.

GP should be able to spend her time as she likes, but since she’s sharing to get us in on her as a voice of authority and on her ecommerce brand, I will say she is boring and this is overkill. There’s pursuing well-being in a healthy way and there’s this kind of obsessing or grasping at everything you can possibly do because you’re psychologically trying to prevent the wrinkles, some illness, ageing, or whatever she’s focusing on.

I do 16:8 and started when quarantine did. I think it’s the only way I haven’t gained weight being home all day. Living in Denver we have bad air quality normally but it’s been catastrophic with the wildfires. Going for a walk is out of the question most days. I love IF because it makes me more thoughtful about what I eat and how I’m getting nutrients in my eating window.

How miserable. The Asian appropriation IS what Goop was built upon, along with the woo quackery in a newsletter that totally ripped off Daily Candy. She’s really gone full loon and totally dragging her daughter into the hustlebus spotlight with her. What a mess

But no one is hard selling body dysmorphia and status ifestyle harder than Paltrow, and she’s got staff to pay. Even Martha Stewart is taking it easy, but our G is a hustler and will always provide us something to roll your eyes at.

  3. Darla says:

    “Ayurvedic eating for my dosha”

I’m dying. I have to save this in my files because this is a line born to be put into a character’s mouth. I have no f’ing idea what any of that means, but that’s what makes it even greater.

    • Jules says:

Ugh don’t make us defend Goopy. Look it up if you don’t know what it is.

    • PlainJane says:

Same! It’s hilarious! Word salad at it’s finest!!

    • Mette says:

Making fun of Paltrow is one thing. Making fun of Ayurveda, a system of medicine based in India, is akin to making fun of acupuncture and Chinese medicine. Respect, people.

      • Jules says:

It sounds like people have never heard of Ayurveda before? I mean, there’s nothing outlandish about it. Saying it’s used for quackery doesn’t even make sense. And it’s problematic to call any culturally based medicine system “quackery”, just because it’s not western medicine. Now I despise Goop just as much as the next person, but throwing Ayurveda under the bus makes no sense here.

      • Disco-Balled says:

        Agree with Jules and Mette.

  4. Jess says:

Isn’t “intermittent fasting” what we do naturally when we sleep??
I mean, breakfast is literally Break Fast.

    • katharine says:

Yes indeed it is! But you see, that’s been around for, like, ever, and isn’t sufficiently trendy for Goops and other “experts.”

    • lucy2 says:

I was just about to ask that when someone mentioned the 16:8 above. If that’s the case, I do it daily!

    • Annaloo. says:

Don’t you know that Gwyneth invented sleeping??! She’s going to show us peasants how to sleep. She also came up w yoga! Every employed actress/yoga instructor in the USA has their job bc of our girl, Gwyneth. She is so hip and edgy and naked.

Next: she is inventing menopause and retirement…or shall we goopify them and newspeak them as a fertility recession and mature lifestyle reclamation

    • Disco-Balled says:

IF is very well studied in peer-reviewed journals and there are definite, pretty incredible health benefits. It’s not just starving yourself but recognising sensible fasting does facilitate desirable processes/states like ketosis and autophagy.

  5. My3cents says:

While all of us have been eating carbs you’ve been fasting. We get it Goop, you’re better than us.

    • LaurenMichelle says:

Goop is so boring and unrelatable. With every passing year she becomes more self-absorbed. Families and most folks are struggling thru a pandemic, and she continues to promote her fasting, (starvation) elitist lifestyle. Goop doesn’t convey any concern or empathy for anyone except herself. Soulless.

      • Annaloo. says:

        X1000

Tho I don’t want to slam Gwyneth too much. She did try to raise money for BLM through one of her youtube videos on Ashtanga yoga. She didn’t even break 6k, but hey she tried!

  6. L says:

She has a busy schedule, jeez…. if only we all could spend our day taking care of ourselves.

    • stelly says:

Seriously! I mean most of us are just trying to get through the fucking day after losing our jobs or businesses. Dieting and “clean eating” is not exactly the priority right now. She’s so tone deaf and self absorbed it’s unbelievable.

  7. minx says:

    Oh, just STFU.

  8. Mee says:

Rich white woman please! I just read the UCSF study on intermittent fasting done on humans with a control group, and it showed no significant change in weight loss or anything else. Some of the fastees had lost muscle mass. Most IF studies had previously been done in mice. They found people ate ‘cleaner’ when the window was tighter. I can’t believe she hasn’t packaged Ayurvedic air in a bottle and sold it for $5k

  9. Tom says:

Chocolate phase, then Frozen Pizza phase, now Indian Takeout phase here. Which means I’ve decided not to off myself with food. Also recently started taking long walks again.

  10. Santa Monica says:

If that’s appropriating girl you best arrest half the Westside of LA.

And fasting is not necessarily disordered, if you are a healthy adult. Plenty of us did it yesterday for Yom Kippur.

    • Jules says:

      Yes!
And the link about appropriating culture goes to a Glamour article, and “shaman Durek” is quoted multiple times. What a joke, the dude is the biggest sell-out fake guru who is selling and marketing spirituality for exorbitant prices.

  11. christina says:

    She is quite plain.

  12. lucy2 says:

If you are eating “fresh, clean, nutrient-dense foods”…why do you need a cleanse?

She seemed unhealthy obsessed with stuff like that, and given that she’s prone to pseudo science and dumb fads, it’s probably doing more harm than good to her.

    • Ellie says:

      Right!?
It’s ridiculous that a priveleged woman in the 1% with access to the best quality food in the world needs to cleanse herself of anything. Your body does the cleansing just fine.

You don’t look at her and think ‘wow, picture of health!’ so something isn’t adding up. Not enough nutrients and vitamins perhaps. Constantly depriving herself of food probably!

Gain 5kg and eat 3 meals a day Gwen – it’ll do you wonders.

  13. Victoria says:

All this cleansing has not removed Gwyneth’s pretentious shit stuck permanently up her ass

    • PlainJane says:

LOLOL!! This comment got me, it’s so true! She spends all her time “improving” herself (and selling it to people with more money than sense) but big picture, is she really any better?

It seems like it just gets worse the older she gets.

  14. TeamMeg says:

Insufferable or not, Gwyneth has a great body and this is why, she works at it! Even “clean” foods if overindulged can pack on the pounds, whether it’s organic raw nuts, gourmet potato chips, energy bars or whatever. When Gwyneth puts on a little weight, she takes it right off. I think that’s pretty healthy. Jane Fonda does the same to keep her figure. Remember when she told Maureen Dowd she only needs 3 weeks to drop from 128 back down to her “fighting weight” of 119 pounds? It takes some serious effort to lose 10 pounds in 3 weeks, especially at Jane’s age! But it’s important to her to be thin, and ditto for Goopy.

  15. Leftcoastal says:

“Pro tip: If you’re on a cleanse, take a date, split it in half, and spread almond butter on each side. If you’ve been cleansing, it tastes like a candy bar.”

If you’ve been cleansing, DIRT will taste like a candy bar, so, no, Gwyneth, this is not an actual “pro tip.” It’s a basic common sense observation that when you STARVING, anything will taste like manna from Heaven.

  16. Lola_Lola says:

I have to admit I get tired of myself sometimes. I say- I get sick of me. Gwyneth never says that. Goop never thinks I maybe need to chill and just STFU.

  17. Bread and Circuses says:

    Yep, eating disorder.

Also, dates are super high in sugar, and almond butter is super high in fat, so yeah, that would taste like a candy bar? Because nutritionally, it basically is? That’s not a cheat, girl; it’s delusion.
