If you follow tennis, you’ve probably seen all of the fuss about Serena Williams “coming back” to the tour. The actual tennis tour has been cancelled since Indian Wells in March, but for months now, there have been small exhibition tournaments here in America and in Europe. From what I’ve seen, the women have been doing a great job with the “new normal” of social-distanced competition. The men? Not so much. Not to jinx things, but Serena is scheduled to play in Lexington, Kentucky next week, and she’ll go to New York for the “Cincinnati” and US Open tournaments after that.
There’s a joke among Serena’s fans that she’s basically only playing tennis at this point to roll out her big-money sponsorships. I mean, it’s true, but that’s not the *only* reason. She did debut a new sponsorship this week – she’s now the spokesperson for Ubrelvy, a migraine medication. Serena did a bit of spon-con with People Magazine and she said she’s experienced brutal migraines for years, and she liked this medication so much, she signed on to be the spokesperson. Serena is getting that Big Pharma money and I’m not mad about it, especially since it’s a drug she actually uses.
Another thing that Serena announced in quarantine is her new jewelry line. The net proceeds of the line are being donated to the “Opportunity Fund’s Small Business Relief Fund, providing support directly to Black small-business owners.” The name of the jewelry line? Unstoppable. Which is what Maria Sharapova named her 2017 memoir. The layers and layers of shade, my God. Pova retired this year, right after her poor performance in Australia. Apparently, her body was completely breaking down after years of taking performance-enhancing drugs. *chuckle*

I’m never going to be fine with athletes and celebrities getting that ‘big pharma money’. Even the Williams sisters, who I love. Influencers shouldn’t be peddling drugs, even good drugs, IMO.
But I’m happy for Serena and the place she’s in.

This is awesome though, I hope it does well for her, and I love that it’s a company that gives back. And good for her for raking in the endorsement cash – male athletes have done so for DECADES. I want Serena, Simone, all the awesome soccer players, etc, to get the same kind of deals the men have gotten.
Maria Sharpova is an example of overrated, pretty, white priviledge getting endorsemnets for her looks, Serena deserves everything, she is everything tennis.

I remember that Australian Open. We had a bit of a get-together for my friend’s birthday. We moved all the nibblies to the lounge room, because Birthday Girl wanted to watch that match. Nobody was cheering MS, as we hated her always yelping on court. One of the others works for Nike, so… Maybe we were Just bitches, but it always seemed to us that she was a sore loser. Perhaps it was just those death looks she threw at her opponents. Anyway, “Unstoppable”, hey? I hate that I take so much literally, but it seems Serena owns that word in this story, cuz clearly, Maria was stoppable.
Yes, Maria was stoppable as she proved herself to be. As for Serena, I am thrilled the she has created a line that benefits POC small businesses as we all know that this administration could give AF as to all small businesses!
Maria was a face for Citizen watches, which are the ones that don’t have a battery and are basically wound by solar / lighting. I own one which is really the only reason I know any of this! Their slogan is Unstoppable, so when Maria named her book that, all I could think was how unoriginal it is to appear in a campaign for a jeweler/watchmaker where they say in their ads “Unstoppable, Maria Sharapova is…” Barf.
I’m kind of surprised Serena used it though for that reason (the connection to Citizen)
