Pope Francis lived amongst regular people for many years. He always seems more understanding and forgiving than other popes throughout my lifetime, like he knows that life gets messy and sh-t isn’t always black and white. He also seems to have an appetite for earthly pleasures, mainly food. In 2015, Vatican doctors forced Pope Francis to go on a low-carb diet because he was gaining too much weight. He was eating too much pizza, which is apparently his favorite. All of which brings me to this: Pope Francis says those carnal pleasures, like eating and sex, come from God so they’re A-OK. Dude will say anything to get off his diet.
Can’t get enough carnal sins? You’re preaching to the choir, says Pope Francis. In an interview with Italian writer Carlo Petrini, who has compiled several conversations with the pope for a new book, his Holiness referred to sex and food, among other delights, as gifts from God. Furthermore, to enjoy them is not sinful, as “overzealous” church leaders have taught in the past.
“Pleasure arrives directly from God. It is neither Catholic nor Christian nor anything else; it is simply divine,” he tells Petrini in the book “TerraFutura: Conversations With Pope Francis on Integral Ecology,” an English working title, out now in Italy. “The pleasure of eating and sexual pleasure come from God.”
Francis continued, referring to the church’s past condemnation for life’s gustatory and sexual pleasures as “overzealous morality … A wrong interpretation of the Christian message.”
“The pleasure of eating is there to keep you healthy by eating, just like sexual pleasure is there to make love more beautiful and guarantee the perpetuation of the species,” said the Pontifex Maximus. Views that banish such basic aspects of life “have caused enormous harm, which can still be felt strongly today,” the 83-year-old claimed.
“I don’t think it’s unusual for a pope to say what he specifically said, though,” said writer and Catholic critic Peter Williams. “In calling the enjoyment of food and sex ‘divine’, the Holy Father is rightly pointing out that pleasure comes from God.” Williams told Newsweek that the Bishop of Rome was describing “the church’s acceptance of ‘human, simple, moral pleasure,’ like good cuisine and fulsome sexual love in marriage.”
Indeed, Pope Francis has said there are much bigger issues to pray over, namely climate change, deforestation and unsustainable consumption.
BRB, I’m gonna write a cookbook called The Pope’s Divine Pleasures and it will be full of pizzas, pasta and asado (Argentinian BBQ). What Pope Francis says here isn’t anything new or groundbreaking, but so many religious leaders (or all faiths) do tend to lean more into the more Puritanical or pleasure-withholding teachings of their religions. It’s nice that Pope Francis is like “food is good, it’s there to be enjoyed and sex is fun too, it’s fine.”

It’s lovely to hear him say this. So many fundamental Christians try to make the pleasure of sex something to be denied or dismissed, or just the byproduct of its “intended” (in their view) purpose of procreation.
The teaching of the Church has always been that sex is wonderful in the context of marriage and that enjoying food is also great outside of fasting times. This is not groundbreaking in any fashion.
I have to respectfully disagree. This kindo of rhetoric from a pope is pretty groundbreaking. I grew up in the Catholic church and went to private Catholic school my whole life. I can remember at a very young age being taught by the priests and nuns in our parish that sex was not for enjoyment but for procreation purposes only. In fact they went so far as to say any sex where the intent was not to impregnate the woman was sinful (hence all the talk about birth control being terrible and sinful because it was preventing the sperm from seeking the egg, etc.) To hear a pope acknowledge that sex is not just something to procreate but also to enhance love and make it more beautiful is pretty amazing to me! I’m glad to hear it in my lifetime, because the way we were taught about sex being so sinful really screwed up sex for me for a while. It made me feel like I was doing something shameful. And I’ve talked about this with other Catholics who had similar feelings. Anyway, it’s just nice to hear sex and food being acknowledged as wonderful things instead of things we have to hide and be secretly ashamed of!
Maybe if birth control was promoted by Pope Francis’s religion and women were empowered and allowed into positions of authority, his constituents would actually be able to enjoy sex without risking permanent consequences!!!
A lot of Christians believe/preach this about all of our earthly pleasures- sex, food, shopping, greed, etc. The idea is that enjoying anything to excess separates you from God and that is what is sinful. Although sex is a little different because you are allowed/supposed to enjoy it, but inside marriage (which as a born-again Christian I have always struggled with that concept). The Christians that focus on sex sooo hard like it’s the only teaching, versus something that injures other people like greed, really bothers me.
He already told Newt and Calista sex was fine, esp outside of your Marraige if you eventually marry the mistress.
I’m with Frankie on this one for sure!!
I hope the next step in this speech will be to allow priests to have life partners so they could also enjoy the divine pleasures of life and hopefully this will stop the sexual abuse we all know about.
Yeah. No.
Not having a partner is NOT what triggered sexual abuse. They were already pervs to begin with, or have you not heard of parents sexually abusing their children?
Besides, centuries ago Catholic priests WERE allowed to marry. They cut that off because illegitimate children were demanding inheritances from Rome.
FYI, although the Catholic Church does not currently allow priests to get married, there ARE married priests in the Catholic Church. Already married Orthodox, Anglican, or Episcopalian priests who converted TO Catholicism. Since the Church doesn’t allow divorce, the convert priests get to stay married as a technicality.
Wow yeah molesting children isn’t something an adult resorts to because an adult won’t have sex with them. So the message is if adults had more sex it would reduce the amount of children getting molested? That’s like INCELs saying if women just put out more we wouldn’t resort to violence.
“Dude will say anything to get off his diet” has me crying laughing. LOL
He’s right!
aww I love him. He was such a great choice for pope. LOL I hope he can continue to eat pizza.
I can relate to saying anything to get off a diet. Lol
I once worked in retail with a Catholic lady who was only a few years older, I was barely 20. She had 4 kids under 6 and Lordy day I was not envious. One day she walked up to me & says, “I got my tubes tied, never tell my mom.” I was puzzled at this declaration considering we weren’t discussing it. Turns out she was a fertile Myrtle(sp?) & couldn’t afford more kids. I felt bad for her that she had to hide this from her parents. I will never forget this discussion.
One of my uncle’s had a vasectomy, and my grandma refused to talk to him for months. (My aunt had had several miscarriages and a very difficult pregnancy, so when she got pregnant again her doctor advised no more after that, regardless of the outcome, basically her life and health depended on it.)
The fundies are gonna lose their minds over this.
That’s my pope!
